Woman of the Year Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies was delighted that Suzanne O’Connor was named the 2014 Local Woman of the Year for the Mulgoa electorate in recognition of her extracurricular school activities in addition to her full time role as teacher at Glenmore Park Public School. Tanya Davies presented the award to Suzanne during a special assembly at Glenmore Park Public School in front of colleagues, students and family. Tanya Davies said that Suzanne is an extraordinary and inspiring woman. Despite being faced with a number of family challenges, she successfully performs her role as a full-time teacher at Glenmore Park Public School while also studying, running a Shutterbugs and journalism group at the school mostly outside of school hours, and fundraises by running ‘mud runs’. “Her contagious, positive attitude; care for others and selflessness are admirable and were the reasons I nominated her for the award” Tanya Davies said. Ms O’Connor said that she was honoured to receive the award especially for simply doing what she loves to do. The Local Woman of the Year award is a special recognition to the outstanding role women make in our local communities. NSW Minister for Women, Pru Goward said that the government is committed to supporting and recognising

 Local Woman of the Year Suzanne O’Connor, Brianna O’Connor, Tanya Davies the significant work and the dedication of NSW women to our community. “These Awards help us identify women and publicly applaud their contribution and the positive example they provide, particularly to the younger generation”, said Minister Goward.

From the Editor I am almost writing this in disbelief that we have already arrived at April, with Easter only a few weeks away! We’re on the cusp of school holidays and another term has passed. Before long, it will be Mother’s Day and not to wish the year away, but winter is creeping across the hill as we speak. This month’s edition has some wonderful highlights such as our cover story about our local ‘Woman of the Year’ Suzanne O’Connor. What a remarkable and inspiring woman she is. Well done, Suzanne! You won’t need to look too far, before you find our delightful Easter treats in ‘What’s Cooking’ on page 16, and a very fitting article in true Master Chef style on page 17. This edition is filled with an abundance of local news and highlights, of what is and what has been happening in and around your community. We have lots of regular articles to read and loads of activities listed on our Community Calendar, found on page 23. Enjoy your month, and your community news! Remember, be there for others, but never leave yourself behind.

DA Approval for Sports Fields and Playgrounds at Mulgoa Rise

Mulpha Norwest has received DA approval for the construction of a wide range of community facilities at Mulgoa Rise residential estate in Western Sydney, including two sporting fields suitable for soccer, rugby and cricket for both day and night use, two playgrounds, a picnic area, cycleway and walkway. The two playgrounds are located at either end of the sporting fields. The larger playground has been positioned to enable parents to watch their children playing, whilst they are there for a game, and the small playground is sited more with residents in mind. Bike paths for children will run from one side of the play area to the other side of the fields. Adjoining the small playground will be a picnic area. Work will commence this month, and is due for completion in September 2014. According to Mulpha Norwest General Manager, Tim Spencer, the new community facilities, including walkways connecting the estate to Mulgoa Nature Reserve, as well as linking to Glenmore Park shopping centre, will appeal to families looking to enjoy a healthy, outdoor lifestyle. “Mulgoa Rise will provide the perfect environment in which to

raise a family, offering all the benefits of a contemporary village lifestyle with town convenience.” Demand remains strong for prestige homes sites in this familyfriendly estate, with over 250 homes sites now sold. When complete, the estate will comprise more than 600 homes. Mulgoa Rise is nestled at the foothills of the Blue Mountains, bordered by national park, reserves and bushland, with golf courses, lakes and rivers located nearby. Mulgoa Rise is also just minutes away from Glenmore Park shopping centre, and a 10 minute drive to Westfield Penrith Plaza shopping centre with its abundance of restaurants, cafes, shopping and entertainment. Mulgoa Rise is being developed by Mulpha Norwest, developers of the international award-winning Norwest Business Park and the highly acclaimed Bella Vista Waters residential estate. For information on new home sites at Mulgoa Rise, contact Jeff Webb on 1300 272 300 or 0410 438 038 or visit www. mulgoarise.com.au. Jesus Brings Life and Love and Forgiveness! We absolutely admire people who give their all. Whether it is in sport or in business or in a relationship, we appreciate and value the person who gives 100% of themselves. For a sportsman or woman, this might mean putting your body on the line in gruelling, tough competitive circumstances. Or in business, giving hours and hours of focused time. Or in a relationship, committing time, energy, devotion and sacrifice. At Easter, Christian people remember and celebrate how around 2,000 years ago, Jesus gave His all for us. For Jesus to give His all, it meant not just going the extra mile or giving his commitment, energy and devotion – but He gave His very life for us. Every one of us! The first letter to the Thessalonians in the Bible tells us: “Jesus died for us so that...we may live together with Him.” At Easter, Christian people remember and celebrate that Jesus gave His all for us so that we can have all that Jesus brings! We recently asked people at GPAC to share some of what “Jesus Brings” to them. Here are some of those replies... “Jesus brings re-assurance that I will never walk alone”...“Jesus brings an eternal perspective bigger than my own”...“Jesus brings a heart of love within me instead of a heart full of hate with no room left for love”...“Jesus brings peace and contentment even when there is chaos all around”...“Jesus brings a freedom from

worrying about the future”...“Jesus brings solid answers to the three big questions – Where did I come from? What am I doing here? Where am I going?” At Glenmore Park Anglican Church in April and May, we invite you all to a whole range of special events for everyone in Glenmore Park, where we would love to share with you the brilliant good news of what Jesus brings so that you too, can experience all that Jesus does bring! Life. Love. Forgiveness. Peace. Security. Joy. Strength. Heaven. Contentment. Freedom. Answers. Direction. Purpose. We’d love to see you! Rev John Lavender

Last month a new and quirky Senior Study Area was launched at Nepean Christian School. It is a restored 1934 Sydney tram with three rooms and two private study areas that used to be driver’s compartments. The recycled tram is now equipped with wifi, air conditioning and polished hardwood bench tops. Tanya Davies, MP, Member for Mulgoa stated, “I’m honoured to be invited to share in the ‘cutting of the red ribbon’ marking the occasion of the ‘study tram open for use’ by the Year 11 students”. “I congratulate Nepean Christian School students, parents and teachers for capturing and restoring a treasured piece of history for our current and future generations to enjoy.” In the spirit of quirkiness and community, there were three launches during the day – before school during a parent Meet the Teacher event, during the day for all students and after school. A variety of the school’s pioneering Senior Students commented, “The tram fits in with the school’s rustic nature.” “It’s tramtastic!” “We sanded, painted and cleaned the tram, and now we have our own space with all the facilities we need.”“The tram has a calming effect.” “We changed something useless into something that is useful. It’s unique!” The Principal, Geoff Wheaton, said, “Moving from faith to action is vitally important to the life of our school, as is a community spirit based on an authentically Christian outlook. The tram encapsulates all of these.”

Glenmore Park Residents Group Update We believe very little information has been put out to residents of Glenmore Park and surrounding areas about the proposed airport. Some information was reported recently in a local paper and we would agree with the comment about reports needing to be updated. With reference to growth in the area since the original report many years ago and the effect on residents, noise, environmental and infrastructure such as road needs rail etc. along with many more concerns. Glenmore Park Residents Group are currently arranging for a number of key speakers from Local Government, State Government and Federal Representatives which includes Fiona Scott ( Member for Lindsay) to update resident as to what they are currently doing or know about, with reference to the Airport proposal. Also to bring the residents up to date and keep us informed now and in the future. This will be a good opportunity for concerned residents to have a say and ask questions. The proposed date for the meeting is 7 PM Tuesday 15th April, at Glenmore Park Youth and Community Centre opposite the Town Centre. Please keep in mind that collectively we can do more than what we can on an individual basis. We hope to see you there.

Who is Leading your Family? When I think of good, strong leadership I think of someone who leads by example, someone whose words and actions match. Someone who has integrity in what they do. When I think of leadership I think of someone who has followers without a position or a leadership badge because they have a genuine love for people. Funny thing is we are all somewhere in this journey of leading and following people. In fact one of my favourite sayings in terms of leadership is that to be a good leader you need to be a good follower. Particularly in relationships such as marriage, both partners must learn the basic formula that leading and following go hand in hand. In the Bible Jesus shows us what it means to be a good leader by being a good follower as well. Although he was the divine king or the world, he would demonstrate godly leadership to his followers by demonstrating his willingness to obey his father: 1. Leadership is servant-hearted. Mark Ch 10:43 But whoever would be great among you must be your servant, 44 and whoever would be first among you must be slave of all. The heart of the matter. Service is not the air of being a servant, vain or false humility, someone who grits his teeth and then speaks negatively of others behind their back. It is not primarily about a position you are elected to, which somehow gives you power to be the head servant. It’s fundamentally about putting on the heart of Jesus because he models servant leadership that God requires from us: The core motivation for this servant-like sacrifice is not primarily seen the act of love, which Jesus supremely demonstrates, but in his obedience to his father. Godly leaders are not chosen because they have power to persuade or because they are eloquent in their speech, but because they have proven in their service, that what they do is in obedience to God the father and his son Jesus and their service to others reflects this obedience. 2. Leadership is intentional The end goal of leadership is not simply to push people around or to place leaders in the lime light, but to empower and equip every member to serve and to do Gods work. Godly leaders therefore will encourage you to be involved in different ministries, life groups, so that you will grow in the knowledge of God and his love and you will stand firm in your faith. The same principle can be applied to marriage as both husband and wife strive to build up their partners, empower them to grow and humble themselves to place the needs of their spouse first. None of us do this naturally, we make it our intention every morning to serve the people we love. 3. Leadership models Jesus. Eph 4:15 Rather, speaking the truth in love, we are to grow up in every way into him who is the head, into Christ,16 from whom the whole body, joined and held together by every joint with which it is equipped, when each part is working properly, makes the body grow so that it builds itself up in love. Everything we do here has a bigger purpose so that we will live to be like Jesus. That’s the only way we will bear fruit, when we love someone we start mirroring him and his love for others. It’s the way we all grow in our character, we look up to someone and begin mirroring what they do and the closer we hang out with someone, the more we become like them. This Christ-like love binds people together and the body imagery here cannot be missed. Families are the same, for to build a unified and strong

6 April 2014 www.glenmoregazette.com.au

family we look for that which binds us together. Jesus is the head of all things, he binds us to him and to others, he binds husbands to wives and he binds families together. To be a good leader today you must firstly make the choice to be led. Let Jesus lead you today. God bless, Rev Mark Bonnici

Nepean Valley RSL Day Club Last month, the Nepean Valley RSL Day Club was officially opened with a celebratory lunch and cake cutting, held at the Salvation Army Hall, Glenmore Park. This special occasion was attended by numerous officials and dignitaries including, Jennifer Collins, Deputy Commissioner, Department of Veterans’ Affairs; Tom Barnsley – RSL State Coordinator of Day Clubs; Cllr Tricia Hitchen representing Stuart Ayres, State Member for Penrith; Rick Cortese representing Tanya Davies, State Member for Mulgoa; Cllr Ross Fowler, Mayor of Penrith who was also representing Fiona Scott, Federal Member for Lindsay; along with all the Nepean Valley Day Club members and volunteers. 16 committed volunteers regularly attend to make certain that each Wednesday runs smoothly for the Day Club members. Strong support through sponsorship is provided by the City of Penrith RSL Sub-Branch and practical support by the Salvation Army, Bakers Delight at Glenmore Park & Guardian Funerals, Minchinbury. Day Clubs are a weekly social program for older people from both the ex-service and wider community. Day Clubs offer social support and friendship to older people who are still living in the community but who are unable to attend more active programs. Many Day Club members believe they are healthier, happier and more active due to their involvement in their Club. Day Clubs are entirely run by volunteers with the support of the Australian Government Department of Veterans’ Affairs (DVA), NSW Office and the Returned and Services League of Australia (RSL) (NSW Branch). Day Clubs provide a unique opportunity for volunteers to become involved in rewarding work and make a real difference in their local community.

Big Day for Sapphires Café

The World’s Greatest Shave came to Glenmore Park last month, with Sapphires Café hosting an event for the Leukaemia Foundation. Customers were treated to a fantastic morning where Sapphires Café co-owner Jenna Vicary, chefs and wait staff put their hands up to ‘be brave and shave’ and raise valuable funds for the charity. Jenna was first to step forward and have all her locks shaved off. “The Sapphires Café team would like to say a huge thank you to everyone who supported us and donated to the Leukaemia Foundation during this year’s World’s Greatest Shave” said Jenna. The day was a huge success and the team smashed the goal they set with funds raised. “We had a goal set and we’ve managed to almost double it and we couldn’t have done it without you! A big thank you must also go to Amanda from Insignia Hair and Day Spa, who donated her valuable time and effort into colouring, cutting and shaving our heads”, said Jenna.

PADRE PIO PARISH

Fr Robert Riedling • 34-38 William Howell Dr , Glenmore Park • Phone: 4737 9735 • www.padrepioglenmorepark.org.au • Saturday: 5:30pm Vigil Mass with choir • Sunday: 7:30am Mass and 9:30am Mass with choir and children’s liturgy

The Easter Story Transforms Us One thing which never ceases to amaze me, and other clergy across all denominations, I’m sure, is the number of people who come to church services each year at Easter and Christmas. Whilst we would love to see these people each week, it is nonetheless gratifying and uplifting to have a large church building packed with people at times of the year that are of particular religious significance, especially the highlight of the Christian calendar, Easter, which we will celebrate on 20 April. It is significant, I believe, that people feel compelled to come to church at this holiest time of year. There may well be various reasons why people come: perhaps it is a family tradition, a habit, a promise made to God, a greater ability to come because of time off work. Whatever the reason, what matters is that people are present to allow their hearts to be touched and transformed by the great Easter story. In our Catholic tradition the last hours of the life of Jesus are played out in a great liturgical drama stretched over a week. We begin with Palm Sunday (13 April), recalling the time that Jesus entered Jerusalem to the waving of palms and olive branches, the king of peace shortly to suffer a violent death. We too wave palms as we hear of this event related to us from the Gospel. Later in the Mass we hear the reading of the Passion, the story of his suffering and death, the very reason he entered Jerusalem for that final time. We continue a few days later with Holy Thursday (17 April) which is the time that we remember the Last Supper, the time when Jesus celebrated the Passover with his disciples just prior to his execution. It was at this meal that, according to the Gospel of John, Jesus washed the feet of his disciples as an example of what it is to be a true disciple: to offer loving service to others. We recreate this event on Holy Thursday as well as celebrate the Mass, instituted by Jesus for our spiritual benefit, that we may never forget his sacrifice. On Good Friday (18 April) we effect a more solemn atmosphere and tone to our liturgy. At 10:00am we dramatise the final hours of Jesus as he made his way to Calvary for his crucifixion. We call this the Stations of the Cross. At 3:00pm, the hour of Jesus’ death, we return to the church and hear the story of his Passion read from the Gospel, we venerate the cross on which he died and we are nourished with his Body before leaving the church, solemn but looking forward to celebrating his Resurrection. And this we do for the first time on Saturday evening with the great Easter Vigil (19 April), begun in darkness and slowly bringing light into the church as a symbol that we have let the light and life of Christ into the darkness of our lives. At this Mass people who have been preparing over several months are received into the Catholic faith and we celebrate Mass with them amongst much joy, singing and praise and worship of our saving God. We celebrate Easter Sunday (20 April) in the same spirit, thankful for the gift of eternal life given to us through Jesus, the one who rose from the dead on this day out of love for us. You might care to give thanks to God for the gift of Christ and eternal life this Easter. Feel free to come to one or all of the Holy Week Masses and services at Padre Pio in Glenmore Park. And The Winner Is... Balloonatics! Local Glenmore Park business Balloonatics are still on a high since winning the ‘Fifi Writes An Ad’ Competition on the Fifi and Jules Show on 2Day FM in November last year. Owners Helen and Dianne not only had radio star Fifi Box produce a commercial for them live on air, but they also won $5,000 in prize money. Dianne’s daughter Monique entered the business into the competition online. Helen and Dianne were stunned to receive the call, “This was amazing! We never imagined our small business would ever be featured on national radio” they said. “As we were live on air, we did not realise at first that we had actually won the competition until Fifi said “Now it’s time to get excited!” the ladies added. Helen and Dianne enjoyed the final product “We found the ad quite witty and entertaining. Byron and Jules presented the ad with the appropriate level of humour and enthusiasm”. The commercial exposed the local business to thousands of listeners nationwide, including their families and customers “Our families have been excited for us and some of our customers even phoned us to let us know they had heard the radio ad”. The business owners plan on spending the prize money on business development, promotions and workshops. Check out Balloonatics’ website for new products and gifts ideas at www. balloonaticsnsw.com.au.

Soul Matters Our souls come alive when life is simple. Why? Google has recently launched “Google Goggles”, an app for smartphones allowing us to instantly source information about famous landmarks, paintings, popular images, or products by taking a picture of it with our mobile phone camera. This sort of technology, along with email, Facebook, Twitter and so on is taking the information revolution into warp speed. No longer do we wait for business or personal responses by snail-mail. Within minutes or even seconds the ball is back in our court. This means juggling multiple things at once. Advertising keeps coming relentlessly to swamp us with noise, information, reasons to buy one of too many choices of everything from biscuits to BBQs. When information comes at us at the sorts of speeds and quantities we are now experiencing, everything speeds up. We are expected to do more at work and in less time. The natural result is more and more stress. There are obvious benefits to society because of better communication, but the longer term effect on our bodies and souls is not so good. In short: psychologists will tell us that our bodies weren’t made for the pace of life we experience today. Everyone has stress. But too much stress produces too much adrenalin (a stress hormone) and this is not good for us. We need adrenalin to energise and focus us when we face danger or a challenge. But when our adrenal glands are constantly bombarded with adrenalin because we are always in a hurry, trying to do too

many things at once, or absorbing stress to be the superproductive person who is admired in our culture, it will catch up with us. In fact it already has. Besides links being found between stress and physical damage to the body like heart attacks, it is now accepted that the well-documented increase in mental illness in western society is in no small way influenced by the way we live. Yes, we are prosperous, but the way our prosperity is expressing itself is not good for our minds or our souls. Our adrenal glands were designed for a horse-and-buggy pace, and too much adrenalin can affect the balance of other chemicals in the brain, like serotonin, which is believed to have something to do with depression. The Bible teaches the wisdom of a simple life. The reason that a simple life makes our souls come alive is that just like in the old days, there is time for what matters. I am thinking about things like love, appreciating the beauty around us, helping others, or spending the sort of time with people that fosters deep-hearted friendships. I am thinking about bringing our hearts into play and reflecting on things in a way that brings meaning to things, or connects us with God’s love and fills us with hope and peace – with the grace that reassures us that God will never leave us. I am thinking about stopping long enough to appreciate life as a sacred gift from God, and as gratitude floods our soul to grasp the opportunity to live our life well. Our frenetic prosperity only pretends at this sort of inner richness. In the old days there were no Google Goggles, and things were simple by default - it took time to communicate and to travel from place to place. But there was time for what matters – for things that make our souls come alive.

Property Investment Essentials More Aussies are now investing in property than ever before, drawn by our affinity for “Bricks & Mortar”, the relative safety of this investment type and the great rental returns on offer right now. But many people are hesitant to take this step, scarred off by tales of woe from friends, bad current affairs stories and fear of the unknown. The reality is that by taking a few simple steps and seeking out good advice investing in property can be one of the safest and easiest ways to build wealth. One of the strategies that we show our clients is something we call “Planning to Fail”. It sounds kind of weird but is basically a process where you envisage worst case scenario’s by writing a list of everything that can go wrong and then working through that list to mitigate each risk. We then “crunch the numbers” with our clients so that they have a fairly accurate picture of how an investment would work for them. If you’re thinking of Investing in Property, why not call our office and book an obligation free consultation or request a copy of our free “Property Investment Essentials” eBook.

Are you a parent looking for high quality childcare in a home environment provided by caring, committed and qualified educators?

Great Aussie Dream I was a Primary School Teacher and David was in IT. We were a typical family, struggling with a mortgage and wanting to get ahead, but there was nobody to help. After a bit of research I decided to start a brokerage that was dedicated to helping families like ours. Our motto is “We make the Dream a Reality” and nothing makes me happier than helping someone into their first home or to buy their first investment property.” Said Leonie The MFAA is the industries peak body and the Excellence Awards are judged against the criteria of Professionalism, Integrity, Ethical Conduct, Innovation and Role Model Value. MFAA CEO Phil Naylor said “The MFAA holds its members to higher standards of education and conduct, and the Excellence Awards celebrates the best of the best. Great Aussie Dream was selected as a finalist, independently judged alongside its peers from across the Country and named the winner. I congratulate Great Aussie Dream on this achievement which is made all the more remarkable given that Great Aussie Dream also won this Award in 2010, 2011 and 2012. It is clear that Great Aussie Dream embodies all of the qualities and characteristics that the MFAA promotes and that their Clients should be well served.” Great Aussie Dream was able to distinguish themselves from their competition by building a business based on putting their Clients first. “It is a great honour to have won this award four time now and I think it comes down to our dedication to working for the best outcomes for our clients. Opportunities and Choices at Adventure Preschool School readiness begins at 3…….Quite often parents ask ‘WHEN does your school readiness program begin? At Adventure Preschool, our program and practice exceeds the National Quality Standard. From the moment a child enrols, our focus is their individual needs and interests and ensuring they are developing the essential competencies necessary for a smooth transition to school. Where many people still expect to see writing stencils and counting books and puzzles, these resources and learning experiences form only a small part of overall competence for school nowadays. The research into Early Childhood now shows that social and emotional intelligence, along with a child’s self-confidence, curiosity, intentionality, self-control, relationship with peers, communication and cooperation are important factors also. At Adventure Preschool, children are given opportunities and

choices that enhance development in these important domains. Our small learning centres, within our room, foster an inclusive environment where each child can develop at their own pace to their full potential. Parents working in partnership with the preschool teachers have a positive outcome on their child’s skills for school success. If you would like to discuss your child’s options for school readiness or take a tour of Adventure Preschool please phone 02 4733 1763 and speak to Kelly at Adventure Preschool to arrange an appointment.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Connection Rituals If your child is having trouble separating from you into childcare or school, or even to family and friends, sometimes it helps to have a ‘connection ritual’. My youngest boy taught me the importance of this. People say that we don’t get an instruction manual when we have our kids. But we actually do. It’s the child himself. Our child tells us what she needs, through her behaviour. When children feel safe within the relationship with you, they will tell you what they need. We just have to listen. My boy developed a ritual at drop-off time and bedtime where he would ask me to blow him a kiss, and he would catch it and put it in his pocket ‘for later’ and then he would pat his pocket. And I had to catch his kiss and put it in my pocket. He was then happy to separate. Thus, a connection ritual is something that communicates your love, care, and attention to your child. It is similar to a ‘comfort item’ but there is no tangible object, just a memory. I am a strong advocate for comfort items like a teddy or a blanket. In the life of a young child, they are a substitute for the primary caregiver. A comfort item provides comfort to the young child during a time when he is starting to realise that he is a separate person to his primary caregiver but the separation causes him anxiety (Dr Donald Winnicott). The comfort item is a reminder of the carer’s love. As children grow older, and it’s not so cool to carry your teddy into school with you, a connection ritual can take the place of a comfort item. A connection ritual can be anything that reminds your child of the bond between you. It can be a word, or a song, but it has to be the same thing each time. One of the coolest connection rituals I’ve seen is a family handshake. You know those funny handshakes that you see on American TV shows. The ones where they shake, then do a thumbs up and a slide, and bump their fists together, and wiggle their fingers, and do an explosion gesture, and all of that? The connection ritual would be done as the final thing when you drop the children off at preschool or school, with a “see ya at the end of school” before you separate. In the USA, connection rituals are standard practice in some schools. The teacher looks the child in the eyes, smiles warmly, shakes the hand of each child as he or she enters the classroom and says “good morning (name of the child)”. Sometimes this job is given to a child who is called ‘the greeter’ and it is just like any other job in the classroom which is rotated amongst the children, just like ‘line leader’. What do you think? Is this something you already do? Do you have some ideas for connection rituals? One of the teachers in the school I work in told me about a book called “The Kissing Hand” by Audrey Penn – you can find it on YouTube. Basically, for the parents the connection ritual is something that creates connection, communicates care, nurture, and attention, and fills the child’s emotional cup before the separation. For teachers, it’s a ritual that communicates to the child that he or she is welcome at school.

McCarthy Catholic College Master Chef

 Stuart Ayres with (L-R) Ellen Storie-Gregory, Harmony Jones, Brooke Said and Conor Marshall. The Hotel Management Institute (HMI) Challenge took place in March at McCarthy Catholic College in Emu Plains. The Challenge was an inter school competition in hotel management. The schools that participated included McCarthy Catholic College, Caroline Chisholm College, Kingswood High School, Glenmore Park High School and Loyola College. HMI is based at the Hydro Majestic in Medlow Bath and is part of the group of hotels which include Lillianfels, Echoes and Parklands. There were three components to the Challenge: A ‘Cook Off ’, a presentation about HMI and dealing with a complaining customer in a five star hotel. Tom Walton of The Bucket List and Channel 10’s Ready Steady Cook was unable to attend as a judge and, instead his place was taken by International Hospitality Chef and Judge, Ralf Brueggar. Ralf is the General Manager of the Escarpment Group (Lilianfels, Echoes, Parklands and the Hydro Majestic). Local MP’s Stuart Ayres and Louise Markus were also in attendance.

The first Challenge was the ‘Cook Off ’ and the Hospitality kitchen became a buzz of activity as student’s teams (two students in each team) prepared, cooked and presented industry quality meals. The meals were beautifully cooked and the judges expressed their appreciation of the taste and hard work that had been put in by the students. The students were bubbling over with enthusiasm. The tension of the competition created positive excitement. The second Challenge was presented in text through visual and spoken work and was an explanation of what the HMI is. These presentations were done through various multi-media. Students were required to change from their Hospitality uniforms to professional attire, as worn by staff in a hotel. The presentations were of a high class and demonstrated the student’s expertise in technology. The third Challenge was to problem solve a hotel management issue. This comprised of a complaining hotel guest (in reality it was Glenda Grice from WSI Katoomba) and how her complaint was handled by each team. One student was the Housekeeper and the other, the Frontline Desk Manager. The role plays were really amusing and the complaining guest was handled competently and was given various complementary breakfasts, perfumes, manicures or gifts. The students learnt a lot about the Hospitality industry, five star service within a hotel and how they reacted when under pressure. Students really did achieve wonders in all Challenges. Another positive aspect of the HMI Challenge was how schools from Catholic and State came together in such a great manner. Prize Winners 1st: Madison Pirrone and Sarah Simmons (Caroline Chisholm College). Each winning an iPad. 2nd: Ellen Storie-Gregory and Brooke Said (McCarthy Catholic College). Each winning $100. 3rd: Petra Henry and Teagan Simpson (Glenmore Park High School). Each winning $50.

Anxiety Do you suffer from anxiety? Do you ever feel resistance to doing something? Do you not do things because it would mean stepping out of your comfort zone? Do you avoid doing things because you might look silly to others, you feel inferior, you will make a fool of yourself, you are not good enough, you don’t have the right clothes, you are too fat, you are too skinny, you are not smart enough? Do you come up with other excuses why you can’t participate in activities etc. If you answered “Yes to any of these, you are experiencing anxiety. Anxiety is an unpleasant state of inner turmoil. There are several types of anxiety which people can experience, the most common ones being Social Anxiety, OCD (Obsessive Compulsive Disorder) PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder), Specific Phobias, GAD (Generalised Anxiety Disorder) & Panic Disorder. For some people, anxiety is part of their daily life eg GAD & OCD, whilst for others there are specific triggers eg flying, public speaking etc. Anxiety doesn’t have to be severe to prevent you living the life you desire. Even mild anxiety can be a roadblock to success in both your personal and working life. Anxiety can make the difference between passing or failing an exam or being successful or unsuccessful in an interview. Anxiety can control your life, or you can learn how to control it. What would your life be like if anxiety wasn’t a part of it?

KEEPING FIT WITH Rj Strong Mind, Strong Body! Have you ever wondered what makes someone good at what they do? Whether it be in health and fitness or life in general, what makes it easy for some people to accomplish their goals, and harder for others? The simple answer is, to be successful at anything, your mind needs to be just as strong, if not stronger than your body. Just like lifting weights will strengthen your muscles, mental strength can be developed by adopting a few of the following principles; • Welcoming positive change and being flexible. • Living for the present and planning for the future. • Accepting responsibility for your behaviour and using failure as an opportunity to grow and improve. • Appreciating and celebrating other people’s successes. Instead of feeling jealous of other people’s achievements, recognise their hard work, and be willing to work hard for your own chance at success. Happy Training! Named last month, the squad sports an exciting group of rising stars, many of whom played key roles in securing passage to the World Championships by sweeping New Zealand in last year’s FIBA Oceania Under 17 Championships in Melbourne. With the tournament just over three months away, preparations increase further following the Canberra camp, with the team to tour China in late April and early May. It will be a busy schedule for the young team, with nine games scheduled in 11 days as part of the four-nations tournament, tipping off against China on April 24.

C Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time E We all know Easter is a fun time sspent with family and chocolate... llots and lots of delicious chocolate! EEaster is a great time for the h human members of the family, b but the infamous Easter egg hunt ccan end in tragedy for our four llegged friends. Chocolate contains ttheobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags!

• Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around.

Colouring in Competition In the spirit of Easter what better way to brighten up the veterinary hospital, than to host a colouring in competition. All entries will be displayed on the walls of the veterinary hospital. You can download the entry form from our website www. orchardhillsvet.com.au, Facebook page or pop into the veterinary hospital and pick up a copy. Post your entries to Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, 377 Wentworth Road, Orchard Hills, NSW 2748, or drop them in at the veterinary hospital. All entries must be received by 7pm on Monday 28th April 2014. Please ensure your full contact details (name, address, phone number, email) are on the back of the entry form or envelope. Winners will be drawn and notified at 10am on Tuesday 29th April 2014.
