As the headlines of the terrible MH17 tragedy fill our newspapers, news feeds and daily conversations; our hearts hang heavy and our thoughts go out to all of those involved with loved ones abroad. Our cover story details the remarkable achievement of one of our very own local residents Laura. What an inspirational young lady she is! Last month, I was fortunate enough to spend some time with another local and talented individual, Brittanie Shipway, The Voice Australia entrant (Team Kylie!!); with a rare opportunity to get ‘Up Close & Personal’ read all about it on page 17. As we slowly edge toward Spring, our Health Expert Rhonda provides an insight on remedies for those ‘spring time symptoms’ on page 16; while RJ, highlights the importance of sleep on page 19. Be sure to check out our local sporting achievements, also on page 19. Next month we will bring you the latest and greatest with all that’s in-store for the Leura Gardens Festival; and don’t forget Father’s Day, the first Sunday of September! Is your Chimney Sending you Smoke Signals? Western Sydney councils are joining forces to tackle wood smoke pollution. The Western Sydney Wood Smoke Project, run by the Western Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils (WSROC), aims to make residents more aware of the proper operation of their wood heaters which will ultimately save money, reduce nuisance smoke and improve regional air quality. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said smoky chimneys could be a real problem during winter months, when wood smoke haze is trapped over built up areas. He asked residents with wood heaters to check their chimneys for excessive smoke. “Unfortunately wood smoke pollution can harm the environment and your health and can be upsetting for neighbours,” Clr Fowler said. “Ideally, chimneys should not vent any smoke, just a heat haze. Older models may vent thin wispy smoke. However, if your chimney has obvious smoke this means it’s not operating as efficiently as it could be, regardless of its age. “Proper operation of your wood heater does not only reduce wood smoke, it is also economically more efficient.” Simple steps to reduce wood smoke are: • Don’t let your heater smoulder overnight – keep enough air in the fire to maintain a flame. • Burn only dry, aged hardwood in your wood heater. Unseasoned wood has lots of moisture, which causes a fire to smoke. • Store your wood under cover in a dry, ventilated area. Freshly cut wood needs to be stored for at least eight to twelve months. Free review of your current loans Expert advice for new loans Friendly and professional service

Never burn rubbish, driftwood or painted or treated wood. These are sure to pollute the air and can produce poisonous gases. • When lighting a cold heater, use plenty of dry kindling to establish a good fire quickly. • Use several small logs rather than one large log and stack them loosely in your heater, so air can circulate around them. Don’t cram the firebox full. • Keep the flame lively and bright. Your fire should only smoke when you first light it and when you add extra fuel. Open the air controls fully for 5 minutes before and 15 to 20 minutes after reloading the heater. • Check your chimney regularly to see how well your fire is burning. If there is smoke coming from the chimney, increase the air supply to your fire. • Have the chimney cleaned every year to prevent creosote build-up. • If you are buying a wood heater, make sure it has a compliance plate showing it meets the Australian Standard (AS/NZS 4013:1999) and obtain the relevant Council approvals prior to installation. Penrith Council and WSROC are holding a free workshop on Tuesday 12 August at 6.30pm about wood smoke pollution. The workshop will provide tips for better wood heater operation. All participants will receive a free goodie bag and go into the draw to win an iPad. A light meal will also be provided. To register telephone 4732 8055.

FAITH – ANGLICAN Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr & Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 and 7pm. Plus activities for adults and young people right throughout the week.

Jesus Brings Justice All of us, from the youngest to the oldest long for justice. Whether we’re children or adults, we can all recognise things happening around us, which make us, cry out “that’s not fair!” It can be people getting away with doing the wrong thing, taking advantage of others, bullying, cheating, not pulling their weight, writing people off, lying, playing favourites – there is a whole lot of stuff and we cry out; “That’s not fair!” Perhaps not surprisingly, the Bible reveals that justice and fairness have always been a huge concern for God and that He is grieved when people treat others unjustly. The Bible’s Old Testament prophets continually challenged the people about a huge range of injustices – even from making sure that the scales in shops had correct weights through to issues of exploitation of workers, bias and deceit. The Prophet Micah sums all this up when says; “He (God) has showed you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.” We see this especially with Jesus. Jesus always acted in a just and compassionate way to those around Him and He taught His disciples to do the same. Jesus was quick to point to hypocrisy and was keen to make sure that the poor, the abused and less privileged in the community were not exploited or taken advantage of.

Imagine the difference in our world, if all people heeded Jesus’ teaching about justice and treating people with fairness and compassion! It all starts with you! Take the step today to come to Jesus and follow Him – and to act justly, love mercy and walk humbly with God. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we are keen to tackle issues of injustice. So on Wednesday night 27th August at 7.30pm we will be having a “Jesus Brings Justice” night where I will be speaking about what the Bible says about justice, plus we’ll be hearing from a number of speakers from various organisations who are working hard to tackle these justice issues. Then, on Sunday 21st September at our Sunday Church Services, I will be preaching on the controversial but crucial issue of “What does the Bible say about refugees?” We would love you to come! Rev. John Lavender

Celebrating a Milestone! Last month, over 4,000 visitors helped celebrate a wonderful historical milestone from 200 years ago, when William Cox commenced the building of the road across the Blue Mountains. This was one of the most important achievements in our early colonial history. The day started with a function at Regatta Park arranged by Penrith City Council, where Cox descendants gathered for the re-enactment parade from the park to the Arms of Australia Inn Museum for the William Cox Historical Festival. At the festival there were speeches from Uncle Graeme Cooper, Mayor Ross Fowler, patron of the Nepean District Historical Society and Member for Lindsay, Fiona Scott, Robert Bettington on behalf of the Cox descendants and local historian and songwriter, Jim Low sang a song about the building of the road. Entertainment included songs from Roger Corbett and Clare O’Meara from the Bushwackers Band, students from the Nepean School of Performing Arts, Tall Timbre Country and Western Band and the Penrith City Show Band. For the younger generation there were pony and wagon rides, an animal farm, bungee jumping, fun on the water with Nuts in Balls, tug-of-war competition, the old fashioned school room and lots more. It was certainly a great and memorable day for all!

FAITH - PADRE PIO CATHOLIC PARISH Fr Robert Riedling A: 34-38 William Howell Dr , Glenmore Park P: 4737 9735 W: www.padrepioglenmorepark.org.au

Saturday: 5:30pm Vigil Mass with choir Sunday: 7:30am Mass and 9:30am Mass with choir and children’s liturgy.

A Wake-Up Call‌ So far this year the Catholic Church in the Diocese of Parramatta has lost four much-loved priests: Fr James Stack, Fr Les Campion, Fr Dave Hume and Fr Peter Woodward, the last two within just a few days of each other in mid-June. Fr Dave died suddenly and unexpectedly whereas Fr Peter had been seriously ill for some time. Whilst Frs James and Les died when well into their 80s, Frs Dave and Peter were relatively young, dying in their late 50s. As well as being a shock, their deaths were a wake-up call to all the clergy in relation to self-care. Men, of course, have a reputation for being rather careless about their health and are at considerable risk of suffering consequences such as obesity, heart problems, diabetes, high cholesterol and so on. For men with families there is at least the possibility of having their potential health problems highlighted by family members with whom they live – perhaps even to the point of nagging them constantly about these issues! For celibate clergy, who quite often live alone, this possibility doesn’t exist and so we need to be more alert to how we are living, most particularly to any unhealthy practices which could endanger our health, both physical and mental. The clergy of the Parramatta Diocese gather regularly to discuss various issues and at a recent meeting the issue of selfcare was highlighted. Clergy of all denominations are generally

busy people, often working long and unusual hours – we don’t sit around all week waiting for Sunday to come! We reflected on issues such as healthy eating, exercise, being strict about taking our day off, as well as caring for each other. This last point I think is one which applies to all people, not just priests. Jesus’ great command is to love God and to “love your neighbour as yourself.â€? (Mark 12:30-31). We cannot claim that we love God if we are not showing due care and concern for those around us, especially those closest to us. Christian faith is not about “me and Godâ€?. It means living as Jesus did and right throughout the Gospels we witness Jesus showing love for others. We are called to do likewise. Highlighting a potential health concern to someone we know and love is just one example, but a very practical one, of living out this command of Jesus. And in doing so, we might even save a life‌ Our parish is a vibrant and active Christian community. If you would like to join us, particularly those who may not attend our Masses regularly or new residents in the area, we would love to welcome you here as part of our friendly, inclusive and familyoriented community. Looking forward to welcoming you! Blessings and prayers, Fr Robert Riedling Parish Priest

FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School

Soul Matters The other day someone said: “I’m my own worst enemy! Have you heard that one? Have you said it about yourself? Over the years I have come to see with hindsight that at different times I should have said it. What I mean is that my struggles at the time resulted in large part because of myself – my attitudes, my pride and unhealthy ambition, my selfcentredness, my wonky ideas about things, my wounded-ness. And as soon as I addressed these sorts of things in me, my soul was lighter and the resulting problems went away. This obviously doesn’t fix all of our problems (not all are because of ourselves). But it fixes a good many of them because we see the world through the eyes of our own soul. Jesus taught that we live from the inside out, and when you think about it, his teaching carries uncommon and helpful insight. Again my point is: we can be our own worst enemy because of what is happening inside us, but if we address these things many of our problems can be resolved. For example, the person who fails to forgive and as a result is gripped with bitterness or anger has become their own worst enemy. Forgiveness would liberate them. Another example: If we feel that others don’t care about our needs it is not always because of a failure on their part. It could be that when people let us down in the past it wounded us, and now it would take Mother Teresa-like levels of caring attention to register at all on our “I’ve been cared for dial! Most of us aren’t like Mother Teresa, so to feel cared-for requires healing and changed thinking to allow us to pick up the more ordinary signals of care from others. In the same way, pride and ambition can torture our soul when

we are not noticed or successful. We cry: “What about me! as if a great injustice has been done, believing that time in the spotlight would address the gnawing emptiness inside. But it never does. Unless pride and selfish ambition are addressed in us they will continue to rob us of fulfilment even if we scored the winning World Cup goal or made the front page of Time Magazine! The enemy within us is the notion that we are better than others and deserve to be recognised. It can torture us because often we are not better. Instead, humbly using our gifts to make the best of life – whether it brings fame and fortune or not – would bring rest to our soul and allow us (ironically) to get on with life and do well! We are also our own worst enemy when we deeply desire to focus on what matters in life, like spending time with people we love or finding God, but make no time for these things. We often need to seek God’s help to change our attitudes and thinking, but often we aren’t even aware of the things in our souls that create problems for us. We might blame others, “the way society is, or God for our struggles. But in clear light beyond our blaming and rationalising, often unless things change inside us (by keen awareness, committed choices, or God’s pure grace) we will contribute to the heaviness and struggle of our own souls. The starting point is to be self-aware by doing some soul searching, or asking someone we trust to tell us the truth, to tell us what they see in us – warts and all. This would be a liberating spiritual practice if it revealed ways in which we were our own worst enemy. Try it and you will find that Jesus is worth listening to. Pastor Paul Marshall

City Park a Step Closer Penrith City Council will continue to investigate the merits of a City Park after a report was tabled at its Policy Review Committee Meeting. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the genesis for the creation of a city park began in 2006. “In 2006 Council adopted the Penrith City Centre Strategy which recommended a park to give the city a civic heart for community gatherings and celebrations,” Cr Fowler said. “Unlike the Macquarie towns of the era, Penrith was never surveyed with land allocated to specific uses such as a central park to meet the future civic needs of its population. “As Penrith’s city centre grows and we plan for a vibrant, economically robust regional city that will accommodate 12,000 new jobs and 10,000 new residents, our research and community consultation through Penrith Progression is pointing to the need for a civic heart.” Penrith Progression has been actively engaging the community through its workshops, seminars, forums and online development of ideas that explore and test how to transform the city centre into a better place to live, work and invest. Participants in the many forums and focus groups have raised the need for a local gathering space and a place for connection with other people and the environment. A review will be undertaken in the coming months to confirm what the park’s role could be in the future and how it could help shape the urban form of the city by acting as a catalyst for investment. The review will help to define how big the City Park should be according to the range and scale of uses, taking into account anticipated future growth of the City Centre. The concept of City Park is still in its early days of planning and will be subject to the outcomes of the City Park review and feedback from Penrith Progression. Feedback from both forums will be used to prepare a design master plan and funding plan for further community consultation.

MONEY MATTERS PARENTS CORNER With David & Leonie Jackson - Great Aussie Dream P: 4733 8592 E: admin@gad.com.au

Does your Bank think you’re Sticky? Banks invest huge sums of money to attract new customers, using slick advertising campaigns and offering special deals but tend to ignore and neglect their existing customers. It doesn’t seem to make much sense. That is until you learn that they are employing a tactic known in banking circles as “Customer Stickiness”. In order for the bank to consider you a “Sticky” customer they need to sell you at least 3 of their products. The ideal sticky customer has a Home Loan, a Bank Account (into which salary is paid) and a Credit Card. You see, the Banks have figured out that once they make a customer Sticky, they can pretty much ignore them because Sticky customers tend to believe that moving is too hard or too expensive, a myth that they are happy to perpetuate. The reality of course can be very different. In fact switching your home loan can be relatively simple and can save you thousands of dollars. It is a sad fact that if you have had your home loan for more than 2 years, chances are your Bank is giving new customers a better deal than you. Kind of makes you angry doesn’t it?

Mike Whitney Talks Tourism to Sydney’s Adventure Capital Well known travel program host Mike Whitney met with Penrith tourism operators at a networking event at Penrith Civic Centre in July. The former Australian one day and test cricketer hosts Sydney Weekender exploring travel destinations across NSW. The program, now in its 21st year, shows Whitney traversing the state profiling the best places to stay, eat and play. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said no one knows tourism in NSW like Mike Whitney. “Mike has travelled far and wide within the state showcasing many travel and tourist destinations. His knowledge of the tourism industry and what makes a great travel destination was welcomed by our own tourism operators,” Cr Fowler said. “Penrith is well established as an adventure destination where visitors can sky dive, go whitewater rafting, wakeboarding or get behind the controls of a jet aircraft. And soon adrenaline junkies will be able to race go-karts and participate in motorsport activities. “And there is so much more. Adventure is all about discovery. From the fire museum to the art gallery, award winning chocolate to great outdoor activities. Penrith has it all.” Whitney is no stranger to the attractions the adventure capital boasts, often visiting them during the course of filming Sydney Weekender. In June he tried his hand at indoor skydiving at Penrith’s latest attraction, iFly.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Standards I often wonder why adults have a one set of standards for themselves and another for the children. I recently observed a childcare worker yelling at a young fella because he was yelling at one of his playmates. It struck me as odd. If the young fella is not allowed to yell then why are you yelling at him? How did your yelling at him help him to learn how to do things differently? A parent in one of my parenting groups years ago, said “I hit the children for hitting each other, it doesn’t make any sense”. Dr Magda Gerber said “YOU are what you teach your children”. No truer words have been spoken. If your kids are yelling, swearing, getting angry where do they get the yelling/swearing/angry from? If they can’t tolerate frustration, who is role modelling that for them? And who is teaching them the alternative - how to calm and center themselves? Parents say to me that their kids don’t listen. I rather cheekily ask how much they listen to their children. Parents expect their children to jump up and do whatever they are asking them to do as soon as they ask it. But when you are sitting on the lounge watching your favourite TV show, or looking at Facebook, how quickly do you respond to your children’s requests? Parents expect their children to share. They rouse on the young one who won’t share his favourite truck. But if I asked to borrow your car how willingly would you hand over the keys? Adults aren’t that good at sharing so why should children be good at it, especially as they are egocentric and they really do think that the universe revolves around them. Being egocentric is developmental, it’s something that their brain controls, they actually can’t help it. They are not being ‘selfish’ to be nasty. If you have a house rule that food should only be eaten at the kitchen table, then are you following that rule too? The kids are looking at you, and pretty soon they learn what the word ‘hypocrite’ means. They will mutter under their breath that you don’t follow the ‘rules’ and then they will get into trouble for ‘back-chatting’ or being rude or not respecting their parents. When we make a mistake we pass it off as a mistake. When our child makes a mistake we say its “misbehaviour”, “naughty”, “seeking attention”. I’m not suggesting that children be given free reign. Your job as a parent is to set the rules for acceptable behaviour, to establish the limits and boundaries. It is absolutely OK for you to set limits and boundaries. Some of the most extreme child behaviour I have ever seen has come from parents who are too scared to limit their child’s behaviour. It’s also your job to be a good role model. Fifty years of research has shown that the best child behaviour is a result of parenting that has a high level of warmth (care, nurture, fun, hugs, listening, attention), and a reasonable level of communicated

Spring is Just Around the Corner The frosty mornings and the cool winds are letting us now that winter is here, however the lovely sunny days are also a reminder that spring is just around the corner. For most of us that is a nice feeling which we all look forward to, but for others it means exposure to dusts and pollens which can bring on some unpleasant symptoms. Watery eyes, dripping noses, headaches, foggy thinking and a heavy feeling in your head can be quite uncomfortable. Imbalances within your energy system, or meridian system, can add to this discomfort. Clearing the blockages and balancing the meridian system can often give you relief from these symptoms, allowing you to enjoy various activities, which you may normally have to forgo. Kinesiology, EFT and Acupressure are simple, non-invasive, harmless but effective alternative therapies which work with the energy system to restore balance and harmony within the body. Using a combination of these therapies can result in reducing the spring time symptoms as mentioned. It is usually recommended that you avoid the pollens and dusts responsible for the symptoms for a couple of days after the therapy. Obviously once spring is here, that is difficult. Now is a good time to address these issues, before the onset of the new season. Your health and well being is your responsibility. Take action now and live life to the fullest.

Up Close & Personal with Brittanie The Voice Australia Contestant (Team Kylie) Age: 21 Where do you live? Mulgoa on a little farm with my Pa! How long have you been singing? Since I was six years old; I’ve always loved the greats, Judy Garland, Shirley Bassey, and Barbara Streisand. When did you discover you had a passion for singing, and a talent to accompany it? It’s just something I’ve always enjoyed, and so I do it! I’ve been very lucky to have the support of friends and family from the very beginning. Without them, I would never have gotten as far as I have in the industry. Describe your experience on The Voice Australia? It was like a very intense workshop; I learnt so much from Kylie and the coaches, but also from the producers and everyone behind the scenes. So much goes into a show as big as The Voice Australia! What are your plans and visions for the future? You have to be ready for every opportunity in this industry, particularly in Australia. But in the meantime, I will perform my Cabaret right around Australia, starting here in my local community first. Expect sparkles!

Shipway

Describe a typical day in the life of Brittanie Shipway after The Voice? My life is incredibly normal! The only difference is how busy I am; my phone never stops ringing or buzzing with emails. I’m essentially running my own business where the product is... Me! How strange... What have you learned from the experience, thus far? To keep pushing and working for what you want. Because at the end of the day, you are the one who has to live with your own decisions. Not the people who judge you! Who is your idol? My late Ma, Doreen Shipway. She was such an incredibly strong woman, who lived for others. And she was so wise! Any comments for the local community? All I can say is THANK YOU for the incredible support you’ve shown me since I was a little girl. I’ve loved every minute of living in such a beautiful community. Who needs city living?

COUNSELLING CORNER

“My Angel Memory Book” Workshop

with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com

The death of your child is heartbreaking. The memories are precious. In this workshop you will create a beautiful memory book to keep your mementos. Handcrafting this book is a way of preserving the precious memory of your baby and is likely to become a family heirloom. It is a unique place to record the information of your irreplaceable baby who has died due to miscarriage, stillbirth or infant death. It is a beautiful keepsake made by you, with plenty of space to put photos, stories and much more. You’ll be amazed at how quickly and easily this elegant book is constructed. There are gorgeous papers, cardstock, and embellishments to choose from. You create the essence of your baby’s memory with the colours you choose. You’re not just creating a memory book, you’re with others whose heart has been broken, sharing your story in a loving, nurturing, safe environment. Join Cait for this intimate workshop, there are only 12 places available. Cait Wotherspoon is a registered nurse, qualified teacher and a practicing counsellor and psychotherapist. Cait’s passion is to help people who have suffered loss. Using her training Cait seeks to empower her clients to breakthrough and rediscover the joys a full and rewarding life offers. Cait offers grief, loss and bereavement counselling for adults, adolescents, children and families in the Penrith CBD.

I should…. Don’t should on yourself. There ARE things you definitely should do. You should take care of yourself. You should attend to the needs of others to whom you have made commitments. You should do your best. You know this. I know this. The problem with should is when it gets so out of control that we feel we must do the impossible. For example: you make a gigantic, impossible to-do list and plague yourself with shoulds all day long to get more done. At the end of the day, you’ve never gotten enough done, Does the sound like you? The list was not doable in the first place, but that didn’t stop you from placing unrealistic expectations on yourself! And by the way…You should be more like (someone else). • You should accept people (that you don’t accept). • You should become (something you don’t want to become). • You should believe (something you don’t believe). • In short, you should be PERFECT IN EVERY WAY. Sigmund Freud suggests that our ‘shoulds’ come from scripts we have heard from our parents and are stored in our Super Ego. So do yourself a favour and ask yourself where your shoulds are coming from.

Pop over to Cait’s website www.indigotherapies.com.au August 30th from 10am to 2pm. Book your spot, phone Cait on 0434 865 429.

KEEPING FIT WITH RJ Rj Tierney (owner) Pure Fitness Penrith Ph: 4732 2884 rj@purefitness.net.au www.purefitness.net.au

Tahlia Tupaea at World Championships

The Importance Of Sleep

Glenmore Park resident and Penrith junior representative, Tahlia Tupaea captained the Australian U17 Women's team (Sapphires) at the World Championships. Tahlia led the Sapphires in 'Steals', 'Assists' and 'Average Points per Game' at the tournament, shooting the ball at an impressive 40.6% from the field and 88.9% from the free throw line. Tahlia sustained a dislocated thumb during a 'preWorlds' tournament in Italy but it obviously didn't adversely affect her performance. The thumb injury was initially diagnosed as an Evulsion Fracture and later scans revealed a hairline fracture. At time of writing, the Penrith women are sitting just outside the top six in 2014 Waratah Championship League (WCL) competition and the action over the final rounds of the regular season promises to be hectic.

We often underestimate the importance of sleep as an essential part of our health and fitness. Lack of sleep, can slow down your ability to burn fat and contribute to weight gain over a period of time. If your body is not provided with adequate sleep, your progress with exercise may be limited. Your body releases its highest amounts of growth hormone during deep sleep, which helps to strengthen your bones and allows damaged muscles and tissues to be repaired. Growth hormone also has considerable fat burning effects. Lack of sleep may also lead to the following; • Reduced motivation levels causing you to skip workouts • Decreased levels of leptin, a hormone responsible for making you feel full, which may increase your appetite and make you want to eat more • Limited progress with exercise. When you are deprived of sleep, everything you do feels more challenging, especially your workouts • Inability to strength train at your peak. Your body depends on the growth hormone it secretes at night to make your muscles stronger. This allows your body to recover and enables you to lift more weight. Make sleep a priority and plan for it. Happy Training! Rj

Glenmore’s Cricketers Off to a Swinging Start Thanks to McDonald’s

Emerging cricket stars in Glenmore will now receive even more support to achieve their sporting dreams with last month’s announcement that McDonald’s restaurants across NSW are joining forces with Cricket NSW as their Major Community Partner for the 2014 – 2015 Season. The extensive partnership between McDonald’s and Cricket NSW encompasses a number of levels including major sponsorship of The Sydney Cricket Association and Country Cricket NSW. In addition, McDonald’s will be supporting the recently launched Cricket NSW Community Grants program that will see an investment of $1.6 million offering local cricket clubs assistance in improving practice and playing facilities to help make cricket more accessible across NSW. Local McDonald’s restaurants across the state will also engage with their respective local cricket clubs to host sign-up days and encourage active participation in the sport. They will also recognise a McDonald’s junior cricketer of the week from both metropolitan and regional NSW throughout the cricket season. Cricket NSW General Manager of Commercial Operations and

Communications, Brett Richardson, sees the partnership as a great fit between the two organisations. “We are delighted to be able to join forces with McDonald’s in what we hope will be a long mutually beneficial partnership. Both Cricket NSW and McDonald’s are passionate about getting kids active, and we will be using the significant reach that McDonald’s has both in-store and through social media to promote our recruitment messages and get kids playing cricket this Summer.” The partnership reinforces the commitment from McDonalds to encourage junior development in local sporting and community groups. “McDonald’s is proud to partner with such an outstanding association, offering cricket clubs across NSW, and particularly here in Glenmore the opportunity to participate in various competitions and challenge them to achieve outstanding results,” said Ian Garton, McDonald’s Glenmore Park licensee. “McDonald’s values the development of important life skills such as teamwork and sportsmanship. Through our sponsorship of Cricket NSW, we hope to increase participation in one of the great Australian sports here in Glenmore by engaging with players as well as funding equipment and facilities,” Ian added. The Border Collie Club was also there and Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital made a $500 donation to the Border Collie Cancer Research Project in coordination with Sydney University. RSPCA Cupcake Day

Dr K D Katrina i Warren W and d Kelly K ll Gill held h ld their h i Thi Third dB Border d C Collie lli FFun Day at Castle Hill Showground on Sunday 6th July 2014. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital were the official veterinarian’s at the event. We had a huge purple tent at the showground and we had the best time. We offered free veterinary checks and answered many questions on the day. We talked our heads off and gave out information handouts on different diseases. Thankfully there were no accidents or injuries to any of the dogs on the day. We also had a free raffle to guess the number of lollies in the jar and the lucky winner received a huge gift basket full of doggie goodies. The kids loved the helium balloons. The Fun Day showcased a wide variety of Border Collie activities, including sheep herding, tricks, flyball, agility, treibball, nose work, heelwork to music, obedience and frisbee. Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill had a competition to find the fastest border collie over 50 metres. The winner of the Border Collie Fun Day race was Milly, who clocked 50 metres in just 4.55 seconds!! Second place went

A Cupcake Day is a great way to raise e awareness and money for the RSPCA. We are hosting a Cupcake Day att Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on n Monday 18th August 2014 between n 9am-7pm. Pop in to enjoy a cupcake (or two!) and even a ‘pupcake’ for your beloved pet. We have made ‘pupcakes’ which are dog friendly and do not contain any chocolate which is toxic to dogs. If you are unable to make it here on the day, then you can still contribute to the RSPCA via an online donation. https://rspcacupcakedaynsw2014.everydayhero.com/au/orchardhillsveterinaryhospital. The RSPCA is the Royal Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, a non-profit, community based charity that works to prevent cruelty to animals by actively promoting their care and protection. The RSPCA is not an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community – through animal adoptions, volunteering, event participation, donations, fundraising, corporate partnerships, corporate support, bequests and grants – to support its vital daily work. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.

Letter to the Editor Say NO to increased traffic, noise and parking congestion in Bradley Street and Glengarry Drive Sadbangarry Residential committee won the case against the location of a proposed childcare centre and had an application for 63 units knocked back. However the fight against the units has recommenced with a modification of the DA application submitted to council. Currently there are development applications before Penrith City Council that will have a considerable impact on parking, traffic, noise and safety in our community. The development, which is located on the corner of Bradley Street and Glengarry Drive, propose a residential apartment block 3 to 4 story in height consisting of 42 units along Bradley Street and 7 large townhouses along Glengarry Drive. The increase on street parking will further obstruct traffic through streets that are already starting to struggle with the growing residential demand. The increase in congestion around this proposed development will amplify noise and impact on the safety of pedestrians and children playing around their homes. The councillors made it very clear that a huge factor in their previous decisions was to see how many residents were opposed to the position of the childcare centre and the proposed units. We need more than ever to show council that Glenmore Park is NOT the place for the high density living they are creating. There are already suggestions of the next applications for multi story units going in for the opposite side of Bradley St. If the developer is successful, we are going to have a very long corridor of units into one of the major entrances into our prestige Glenmore Park. Join us to oppose these developments and keep up to date through facebook: Sadbangarry or email sadbangarry@hotmail.com Council’s DA tracker site search for DA13/0311 http://bizsearch.penrithcity.nsw.gov.au/ePlanning
