HYDRAULIC SUPPLIES & REPAIRS Attn: Truck & Mobile Hydraulic Operators For the past three years, Blake and Danielle Parkinson have put on a spectacular display of Christmas joy and wonder in the form of a Christmas Light Display at their home at The Carriageway in Glenmore Park. Each year the couple, who were both raised in the area, have a multitude of visitors coming from near and far to marvel at their wondrous light display. It was due to Blake’s late grandmother that they started their own display seven years ago. She kicked it off by buying them their first set of lights and the display has just grown and grown from there. Leading up to Christmas, the set up takes about six weeks and during December the young couple like to sit back and enjoy their display and everyone else’s in the local area. Although they do not have children yet, both Blake and Danielle got the passion for Christmas lights from their parents and they enjoy the happiness it brings to people, especially children. Each year, the Parkinson’s look forward to making their display bigger and better for everyone to enjoy. This year they have two new features: a 6-metre Christmas tree and two lifelike reindeer. These will be added to their Christmas-themed garage display. The Parkinson’s favourite part of their display is the hologram of Santa in the window. It is also worth noting that they even have a Santa’s letter box where children can post a letter to Santa. Make sure you check out this impressive display of Christmas spirit. You will find it at The Carriageway in Glenmore Park. There is also a Facebook Page called ‘Christmas Lights - The Carriageway’ you can follow to see the latest additions and up-to-date information. This is definitely one display not to be missed!  The Parkinson’s Light Display at The Carriageway, Glenmore Park. Image Supplied. Article: Sara Drebber

FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

Come Alive at Christmas! At its heart Christmas is a celebration. But a celebration of what? We say “Happy Christmas.” We sing “Joy to the world”, but why should we be happy? What joy is there to sing about? At Christmas we remember the words of an angel to a startled bunch of shepherds on that first Christmas morning recorded for us in the Bible’s book of Luke; “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Luke’s account of Jesus’ birth reveals two important things. Firstly, Luke anchors this event firmly in history. It is terribly sad when people jump on the bandwagon of dismissing Jesus’ existence without checking the facts. In Luke’s account we see real people in a real place at a real time. In other words, if you were there 2000 years ago you would have been just as startled as the shepherds! Let me encourage you to carefully investigate

4 December 2017

www.glenmoregazette.com.au

the facts for yourself. Secondly, Luke reveals the necessity for Jesus’ coming; Luke tells us that Jesus came as a “Saviour.” The reality is that our lives are out of step with God. We see it in our world. We see it in the people around us. And if we’re honest, we see it in ourselves. The angel declares that Jesus has come to rescue us from the consequences of ignoring God and keeping him on the sidelines of our life. Jesus has come to give us new life with God when we put our faith and trust in Jesus. This is why we can say “Happy Christmas.” This is why we can sing “Joy to the world.” We want to share this great news with you at our “Carols in the Park” at Blue Hills Oval in Glenmore Park and our Christmas Celebration Services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Sweeta Selected in Seeds for the Future! Local resident Sweeta Chand was recently selected to participate in the Seeds for the Future program run by global telecommunications company Huawei. Sweeta is one of the 24 high achieving Australian ICT students across the country, who will be taking part in the three-week learning experience across Beijing and Shenzhen in China. The students have been selected from Australian Technology Network of University (ATN) institutions - RMIT, The University of South Australia, Queensland University of Technology, University of Technology Sydney, Curtin University and James Cook University. In collaboration with the Federal Government New Colombo Plan Mobility Program and the ATN, Huawei selected top performing students to travel to China to experience Huawei’s dynamic global business – an invaluable opportunity to any tertiary student like Sweeta wanting to gain international experience. Ever since she was a student at Caroline Chisholm College, Sweeta has always been intrigued by problem solving techniques, mind mapping and telecommunications. Fascinated by IT from a young age, it came as no real surprise to her parents and friends that she wanted to pursue a double degree at UTS in information technology and business. Sweeta chose to study at UTS because of the myriad of programs, the modern facilities and learning environments the university provides. Down the track, her insatiable curiosity for technology combined with her long-time interest of seeing China led her to apply for the program. Through Huawei’s Seeds for the Future program, Sweeta is looking forward to gaining first-hand experience within the ICT sector, while learning about the next generation of technology transforming the global economy such as Internet of Things (IoT), 5G and cloud computing. Sweeta has a natural inclination towards entrepreneurship and hopes the Seeds for the Future program will give her the right skill set she will need one day to launch her own technology start-up.  Glenmore Park resident, Sweeta Chand | Image Supplied

WATER SAFETY

Give a Gift For Life this Christmas! Stuck for gift ideas this Christmas? In recent years we have seen more and more grandparents, parents, carers and relatives are thinking outside the (gift) box, and bypassing more traditional presents for experiential presents, or gifts which teach children a skill. Swimming lessons proved to be one of the most popular choices last year, with gift voucher sales in 2016 showing an increase of over 50% on the previous year’s numbers. Especially after last holiday seasons tragic death toll by drowning, it is important to remember that drowning is still the biggest cause of accidental death in Australian children under 5, with the majority of deaths occurring in backyard swimming pools. Encouragingly, each year registered swim schools in Australia conduct over 20 million lessons to approximately 600,000 families nationwide, however an estimate from Royal Lifesaving Australia suggests that less than 25% of all children in Australia are being taught to swim by commercial swim schools each year. “I think parents and grandparents in particular are looking for gifts that will enhance their child’s learning outcomes, or provide them with a skill or an experience.” Alan Bentley, owner of Nepean Swim and Fitness stated. “Of course children’s safety is a huge factor in the decision making process when choosing the gift of swimming lessons, but I am also hearing from parents that they are reluctant to give their children another piece of technology to encourage couch potato habits, and instead would like to see their children get out and get active. A gift that ticks both these boxes represents value for money to parents” said Bentley. “With the cost of living rising, a gift of swimming lessons is a way for grandparents or other relatives to contribute to this important household expense”. Bentley added “Interestingly, we are also seeing an increase in enquiries for our CPR courses for carers, so I think the water

safety messages and behaviours are really starting to be taken onboard and practiced in the wider community. However while drowning’s are still taking place in Australia, there is always room for improvement.” Please remember to stay vigilant around the water this summer holiday - all I want for Christmas is that we do not see a repeat of last summer’s horrible drowning statistics. Wishing everyone a safe and happy Christmas and New Year with their loved ones!

Christmas and the Spiritual Realm The Bible teaches that there is a spiritual, non-material realm that affects human life in real ways. And the impact of this might surprise you. The Devil’s spiritual forces try to harm humans with lies, lust, hatred, and fear. God’s spiritual forces are at work to defeat the forces of darkness and to bring humans an abundant life defined by peace, joy, justice, freedom and love. The impact of the spiritual realm on human life is evident. For example, a person at work might spread a malicious lie about us, but the true impact of this will depend on our inner strength or what happens in the non-material part of us (our “heart”). With God’s light bringing truth about our value, there is little impact. But if we let the lie spoken about us take hold, it can deeply affect our self-esteem and peace. There is also a spiritual impact on children who are deprived of love (they spend their lives

6 December 2017

www.glenmoregazette.com.au

searching for it), and on rape victims. Also, surely someone like Hitler was the product of something more than his upbringing – where did that sort of evil come from? And with the amazing human will to live that I see in people facing terminal illness, what sort of evil causes a person to want to end their life? These are evidence of the battle in the spiritual realm – of non-material influences on human life. It seems Christmas is a different topic, but not so. The Bible teaches that Jesus Christ is a spiritual King who came to earth to defeat the spiritual forces of evil so that we can live well. He comes with power to heal and restore the human heart and to defeat all evil – even death. So, the real declaration of Christmas is: The King has come to help us! Reach out to the King if you need his help – his heart is open to you. I pray for God’s best for you and your family this Christmas.

O Christmas Tree, O Christmas Tree

One of the great Christmas debates is whether to buy a real or a fake tree. With so many Christmas tree farms nearby, we thought we’d make a case for supporting these local businesses. Many of these farms are family owned and operated. They employ local people, while artificial trees can often be made overseas and sold by big chains. Mark Ford is one of the owners of Glenmore Christmas Tree Farm in Mulgoa, which has been in the family for 50 years. You can pick your own tree from the paddock, any size for $50. The farm is relatively small compared to some others in Luddenham, planting around 400 at a time, but said Mark, “it takes four to five years for a Christmas tree to grow, so we stagger them”. One of the top reasons for buying real is the wonderful scent of pine. Nothing quite compares. Mix that with the delicious aroma of freshly baking cookies and oh my, my, my. Real trees require no storage and have easier and more ethical methods of disposal. They are often composted or made in to mulch for use in garden areas. Plastic trees use more fossil fuels during the manufacturing and shipping and release more carbon pollution. Natural trees convert sunlight into wood, starch and sugar, taking carbon dioxide out of the air thereby helping to reduce changes to our climate. Because pine trees are not native to Australia, buying them allows the land to be used for that purpose and then new ones are planted each year. They are also cost effective. You can get cheap artificial trees but the ones that are built to last for years are usually more expensive. And finally, choosing a real tree direct from the farm is a fun day out. Walking through the fields trying to select that perfect one for your home is a wonderful experience and a holiday tradition for many families. Glenmore Christmas Tree Farm are located at 669 Mulgoa Road in Mulgoa. Their phone number is 4733 3907. PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com This past month, I have been doing a lot of toddler taming – teaching kids to be calm instead of fussing, screaming, or crying for their parents’ attention. Parents and children can get into a negative feedback loop. It goes something like this… • Child fusses, screams, cries to get attention • Parent pays attention to the fussing, screaming, or crying, and picks the child up • Child calms down Over time, the child either thinks she needs to fuss to get the parents’ attention or she doesn’t believe she can soothe without the parents’ help. The parent learns that the kid won’t stop screaming until he picks him up. Now, don’t get me wrong. Toddlers are entitled to a certain number of tantrums each day. The emotional centre of the brain (limbic system) heats up around ages 2 and 3 years old. Tantrums are normal at this age. But tantrums all day every day are not normal. Something has gone awry if this is happening. So, I have been teaching toddlers to be calm and ask the parent for a cuddle when s/he needs it, without the fussing. And I have been teaching parents to only respond to a calm child. The parent still stays close to the child, and occasionally reminds the child to calm using few words. The result has been calmer kids and parents, and more positive interactions. Calm is much better than stressed. You can teach your older kids to be calm too. I used to do this with my kids. If they yell at you, note the tone “that was a loud voice” or “that was a strong reaction”. I would then tell them to stop and take a deep breath. After they did that, I would prompt them to speak to me in a calm manner. Another trick is to tell the child what he is doing wrong, and what to do instead. For example, “James you are screaming at your brother, you need to use your calm, kind words”. You can use this strategy for any child's mistaken behaviour. Parents tell me that using this strategy helps them to stay calm, and focused on the child’s behaviour. Wishing you all a peaceful festive season and school holidays. Image: www.pixabay.com

Redbacks: Our Proud Local Club

Glenmore Park Cricket Club celebrated its 20th year last season and is now proudly the largest and leading cricketing club in the Penrith region. The club is represented with teams in the senior men’s competition grades one to nine, while their juniors are represented in all age groups, sometimes with multiple teams including four teams in the under thirteens. In 2017, they had multiple premiership winners in both juniors and seniors including being crowned PJCA Club Champions. More recently they have been very active in other grass roots cricketing initiatives with the implementation of their first girls only team, the Cricket Australia T20 Blast and Milo In2Cricket programs. Already they have seen great participation numbers for these programs targeting 5 to 10-year old’s looking to get into cricket and hope to grow this even further with their second program starting Term 1 in the New Year. Glenmore Park Cricket Club are not only recognised for their great on-field performances, but also their off-field contributions to cricket and the wider community. Last season they were the first local club to implement full coloured clothing for their young players (T20 style) which is proving a hit. They are active in social media, particularly with their video footage, capturing many a game and sharing with their members; creating great history and memories plus a few laughs. “In recent years, probably one of our most significant and proudest moments as a local community club was the contributions we made in raising $175,000 plus for charity, which enforces the true spirit and kind heartedness of the Redbacks” explained the club. This year, the club have now turned their energy towards focusing on obtaining new and better facilities for cricket in the Glenmore Park area. If you want to play cricket and join them at the Redbacks, go to www.gpcricket.com.au for more information.  Young cricketers involved in the club’s T20 Blast program | Image: Glenmore Park Cricket Club

5 Easy Steps to Holiday Learning The Summer school holidays are a great opportunity for children to recharge the batteries, but for many parents of young children, there is a concern that some of the learning that took place throughout the year will be lost over the long break. It is true that children can regress during the Summer holidays, especially younger children who are just starting to grasp certain concepts and require further consolidation. Never fear, here are 5 simple tried and tested ways to encourage your children to keep learning throughout the break whilst also having fun: 1. Buy your children books for Christmas on topics they enjoy or better yet, visit the library every few weeks to restock with some new reading material. Read with them but also encourage them to read alone or to a stuffed toy for enjoyment. 2. Get your children involved in planning activities. Perhaps they could use the internet to search for fun things to do. Ask them to create a schedule of activities using the computer. They could even plan transport by looking up timetables and matching up activities and travel times. 3. Go on a day trip or two to a museum, wildlife park, art gallery or live performance. Take time to discuss things your children learned or enjoyed about the experience. 4. Encourage your children to keep a written diary or journal of their thoughts and feelings. If they are young, they may prefer to just write a sentence about what they did that day and draw a picture. 5. Give your children a small amount of money to manage as their ‘holiday budget’. Encourage them to plan their expenses, work out costs, change and keep track of money remaining. This is a great way to practice mathematical skills whilst encouraging a sense of independence. Remember, although it is important to keep progressing, it is equally important that children get to have some freedom to relax during the break, so they can be nice and fresh for the brand-new year of learning ahead. Have fun and enjoy the holidays! Reading aloud to a toy can help children practice their reading skills | Image: www.pexels.com. Article: Sara Drebber @ www.educatered.com.au

The Pudding of Christmas Past

Right. Cards posted. Gifts wrapped. Menu sorted. Wine rack loaded. By the time Christmas Eve arrives, most of us are pretty exhausted from all of the shopping and organising. But, wait, oops, who forgot the Christmas pudding? Good thing the shops are still open, so we can make a quick dash for those last-minute items. Historically speaking, the Christmas pud was a great source of holiday anxiety for the cook, as the traditional way to prepare this seasonal treat was anything but last minute. The dessert was introduced to Australia at the beginning of British colonisation. The batter is made with eggs, suet, breadcrumbs and dried fruits like raisins, currants, figs and almonds with spices such as cinnamon, nutmeg and allspice. The 19th century housewife would work months in advance to produce the perfect pud which involved seeding the fruit, grating the breadcrumbs, hand mixing the heavy batter and then wrapping in calico, muslin or cheesecloth. Then there were hours of boiling, which meant tending a fire in a fuel stove or under the laundry copper. Then there were the last few minutes of finger crossing on Christmas Day hoping all her hard work didn’t produce a crumbly, sticky or heavy mess. Later after the Murrumbidgee Irrigation Scheme brought water to the desert, farmers in the Riverina were able to grow more citrus fruit which was preserved as candied peel and used in the puddings. Austrian port and sherry were being used by the 1950s for soaking the dried fruit in. Coins used to be placed in the batter and a year of luck bestowed on the lucky recipient, but when the currency changed in the 60s, testing found that the new coins turned green and made the pudding have a funny taste. Today, the Australian Mint sells coin packs with a mixture of vintage threepence and sixpence pieces, but recommends they are not baked into the pudding but ‘placed into warmed slices just prior to serving.’ These days, we don’t need a coin in our slice to realise how lucky we are to be able to purchase our Christmas Puddings. Image: www.pixabay.com. Functional Scoliosis – A Hidden Cause Of Future Back Injury! Scoliosis is a condition which can cause an immense amount of back pain. But what is scoliosis? When viewed from behind while standing, our spinal column should have all vertebrae in a nice, straight, ‘up & down’ line. Scoliosis occurs when the spine is not straight, i.e. deviates left or right at one or more points along its length. Very few people have a perfectly straight spine. Most of us will have a very slight amount of deviation here or there, usually without symptoms. There are two main sub-types of scoliosis: functional & structural. This month we’ll look at functional (non-structural) scoliosis, which is considered a temporary change of spinal curvature caused by anything that can cause a difference in the length of muscles impacting the spine. For example: 1. over development &/or shortening of muscles on one side of the body due to: a. one sided sports (golfers, tennis players, etc) b. differences in leg length c. altered movement while compensating for chronic or acute pain 2. muscle spasms due to: a. injury on or around the spine b. altered nerve flow to muscles c. inflammatory conditions, e.g. appendicitis Under such conditions the contracted (spasming) muscles on one side of the body pull vertebra away from the midline to produce scoliosis. When the muscles return to normal length scoliosis disappears. Treating functional scoliosis may be as simple as playing two sided sports, or getting an orthotic to even up leg lengths. However, when muscles have been contracted for a longer

period of time they can become stressed, slightly swollen (knots), painful and with their surrounding connective tissue sheaves much-shortened. Such muscles do not simply come back to their ideal length. Chronically shortened muscles in and around a slightly scoliotic spine can result in continual & excessive ‘wear & tear’ to vertebrae and discs, leading to premature degeneration of both. The result may be eventual disc rupture, or vertebral crush injuries. This wear & tear happens even from the normal, routine, bending or twisting movements that we do every day. Many acute back injuries result from accumulation of such small injuries. These chronically weaken vertebral tissue. Then one final trigger, like a heavy lift means, I see many tradies that never needed to have a back injury at all, had they kept their back muscles loose & spine straight. To allow such chronically shortened muscles to return to optimal length and condition, simple stretching may not be enough. Here’s where specific treatments such as ‘muscle elongation therapy’ (MET) and nutrition as practiced at our clinic can help. Treatment promotes healing, restoring affected tissue to optimal condition, and helps prevent further injury. Call the clinic if you’d like to learn more. Next edition we will talk about Structural Scoliosis Because there is an intricate feedback mechanism between tight muscles and the brain, tight muscles continually signal ‘STRESS, STRESS, STRESS’ to the brain. Following treatment people often perceive much reduced stress levels – a great side benefit. Santa Photos With Your Pets Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2017 to take photos with your pets. Santa will be here from Friday 1st December until Saturday 23rd December 2017, Mon-Fri (9am-7pm) and on Saturdays (9am-12pm). For a $10 cash donation, your Santa photo is presented in a Christmas card, with all proceeds donated to the Guide Dogs NSW. We have Christmas themed props for your pet’s photos (e.g. hats and scarves), feel free to bring in your own outfits.

Keeping Your Pets Safe At Christmas • [Ham and Turkey (meat/bone/fat)] Causes vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis, bowel obstruction, or constipation. • [Skewered Meat] If your dog is a rubbish raider, he/she may swallow a skewer, this can be life threatening should the oesophagus, stomach or intestine be pierced and cause peritonitis. • [Chocolate/Fudge] Causes vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis, theobromine can cause chocolate toxicity resulting in seizures or death. The more cocoa that is in the chocolate the more toxic it will be. Cooking chocolate is seven times more toxic than milk chocolate. • [Coffee/Tea] Coffee and Tea contain xanthines, which can cause cardiac and nervous system damage. • [Grapes, Sultanas and Raisins] These contain a toxin that targets the kidneys and can cause renal failure. • [Macadamia Nuts] Causes vomiting, diarrhoea, pancreatitis. Macadamia nuts contain a toxin that can affect the nervous system of dogs – resulting in incoordination or paralysis. • [Alcohol] Alcohol even in small quantities can cause

intoxication. Clean up after parties and don’t leave drinks at dog heights. Alcohol can kill your pet. • [Cooked Bones] Never feed your dog/cats cooked bones. These bones can splinter and cause intestinal tearing causing peritonitis – this is life threatening. • [Artificial Sweeteners] Xylitol common in many sugar free drinks and lollies causes low blood sugar (even in small quantities) in dogs. • [Meat Soaked Strings from your Roast ] These taste delicious to your pets. Can cause linear foreign body requiring emergency surgery. • [Decorations and Wrappings] Risk for intestinal obstruction (linear foreign body) or strangulation. • [Christmas tree decorations] Can cause strangulation, intestinal obstructions, cuts from glass ornaments. • [Heat Stroke/Stress] An Australian Christmas is often spent around the pool or outside having fun. If your pet doesn’t know when to rest/stop playing/running laps around the pool they may quickly succumb to heat stroke. • [Batteries] If swallowed these can be toxic or cause an intestinal obstruction. • [Electrical Cables/Christmas Lights] Electrocution risk or fire risk if chewed. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. THE LAST WORD Don't you just love December? Such a significant month for so many reasons. It symbolises the end of another year; be it a great year or one we would rather put behind us. Either way it's nice to know the year is quickly coming to a conclusion and we're on the cusp of fresh new beginnings. You often hear it....'can't wait until this year is over'.... With the year behind us, we can set about improving on the year that was; or taking what we learned along the way and make changes to avoid a repeat. For me, 2017 was a fantastic year. I was fortunate enough to spend more time with my family and focus on the things that matter the most. One day these moments will be but mere memories and its important that we make the most of 'today' and 'now'. If your December calendar is anything like mine, there's hardly a minute to spare. We have plenty of amazing events right here in our own backyard, littered throughout December and January. Why would you need to be anywhere else? From us to you, wishing you and yours a happy and safe Christmas and a spectacular New Year! Here at the District Gazette, we'll return bigger and bolder in 2018, from February! "What is coming is better than what is gone" Enjoy your Community News.
