Fight for a Direct School Bus Families in Glenmore Park whose children attend McCarthy Catholic College at Emu Plains have cause to celebrate. Their long fought battle to achieve a direct school bus service between Glenmore Park and McCarthy Catholic College last month took a major step forward to becoming a reality. “I am pleased to inform Glenmore Park families that through consistent efforts from the community, and my lobbying and advocating Busways and the Minister for Transport, we are one step closer to securing this direct bus service” said Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa. As of late May, school buses 4055, 4567, 4507 and bus routes 797 and 799 (in the morning) between Glenmore Park and McCarthy Catholic College now ensure that McCarthy Catholic College students will not need to disembark the bus at Penrith station en route to school but remain on the same bus, while still allowing commuters to disembark and school students to board the bus for school. Glenmore Park resident Kyli Trimboli has been a strong and enduring campaigner for this direct bus service and is credited for raising the issue with Tanya Davies when she was elected in 2011. “I am so happy that we are finally heading in the right direction here. We have about 200 families in Glenmore
Park affected by this problem and it’s just ridiculous that our children should have to spend almost three hours a day just to get to Emu Plains from Glenmore Park, and return in the afternoon” Ms Trimboli said. cont...Pg.13.

From the Editor Brrrr, you can certainly feel the chill in the air as Winter slides around the corner. I must admit, Winter is my favourite season. I love the crisp morning air, and the wonderful array of soups and stews that grace my dinner table throughout the season. There is a real theme of ‘Flying High’ in this edition, as we read about many wins experienced in/around our community of late. Much like our cover story detailing the long-fought battle to achieve a direct school bus service; or the sweet success of Lollylicious on page 3; and 80 amazing years of the Australian Air League on Page 5. Of course, there’s a wealth of information provided by our regular columnists across a broad range of topics covering, faith, money, children, pets, counselling, health and fitness to keep you well informed again this month. There’s lots to read and lots to do in this edition. Why not get warm, enjoy a hot cuppa and have the kids try their hand at our ‘Winter Warming’ Puzzle on page 13. This month, count your rainbows, not your thunder-storms. Enjoy your commun nity news. community

Friendship Friendship is something we all crave. We want people in our lives who love us and accept us for who we are. We all need friends to share our lives, from the youngest of children to the oldest of adults. Friends put up with our bad habits, our bad jokes, they share in the Happiness and great Joys of life and grieve with us through the sorrows and hard times. A BFF (Best Friend Forever) is rare but absolute gold when you find one. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church we are on about Friendship. We recognise this simplest of human needs. We love giving people the opportunity to find friendship with one another and secure friendship with the God who made us. We know that the longest lasting friendship is found in Jesus and we want everyone to have the opportunity to respond to Jesus’ offer of friendship. This theme of friendship is what we are exploring this year at our Kids Holiday Club. We will do this with the help of some explorers. It’s one of the most significant events for children in our church calendar. Each July school holidays we spend 4 mornings together playing games, singing, watching dramas, meeting crazy characters, creating fun craft and learning that in Jesus we find the ultimate BFF. Jesus knows all about us, and He still loves us eternally. The Kids Holiday Club is for all children from Kindergarten to year 6. Mon June 30th - Thurs July 3rd.
Our program runs from 9:30-12:30 each day (registration opens at 9 each day) and the week finishes with a family night on the 3rd for families to come and see what the kids have been doing through the week. For more info contact: office@glenmorepark.anglican.asn.au or visit our Website at glenmoreparkanglican.com.au. Registration will be open from 1st of June. You can Register online, or get a registration form from our Church office, 16 William Howell Drive, Glenmore Park. Edward Frost (Children’s Minister) (In John Lavender’s absence)

Pentecost: Birthday of the Church Each year, fifty days after the great celebration of Easter, the highlight of the Christian calendar, the Church celebrates Pentecost. This feast celebrates the sending of the Holy Spirit upon the world to give each person the gifts needed to spread the message of Jesus. This year Pentecost falls next week, on Sunday 08 June. The scriptures tell of Jesus, following his resurrection, appearing in the locked room where the disciples were gathered after his crucifixion, fearing that they too were to suffer the same fate as Jesus because of their association with him. The first words of Jesus are “Peace be with you.” He says this twice, in fact, knowing how the disciples are feeling. He then tells them that he is sending them out on a mission (“As the Father sent me, so am I sending you.”) It is for this reason that we regard Pentecost as the birth of the Church: the mission given to the disciples that day is the same mission of each Christian church today. Whenever we undertake any enterprise, daunting or not, we need to be well equipped. We would never think of embarking on a long trip without sufficient fuel in the car or adequate food and water if we were travelling across a desert. This is where the Holy Spirit enters the picture. Immediately after declaring that he was sending the disciples out on mission, Jesus breathes on them and says “Receive the Holy Spirit. For those whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; for those whose sins you retain, they are retained.” The mission essentially involves the reconciling of people with God, a mission which continues to this day. Fortunately we do not do it alone for the Holy Spirit inspires us and equips us with all that is needed for this remarkable task.
Whenever I talk to our parish schoolchildren about the Holy Spirit I usually ask them if they can describe the appearance of the wind to me. Invariably children will put up their hands eagerly and say things like “the tree branches move” or “my hair blows around.” Of course, what they are describing is not the appearance of the wind but evidence of the wind at work. It is rather the same with the Holy Spirit. We cannot see the Holy Spirit but we can see evidence of it at work in people who are willing to let it do its job. As Catholics we believe that we are given the gift of the Holy Spirit at our baptism and as we mature and grow in faith we hopefully open our hearts to letting the Holy Spirit work in us through our acts of loving service to others in imitation of Jesus. It is this precious gift we celebrate at this time. The Holy Spirit is that which enables us to show the face of Christ, to make Christ manifest to one another. This, after all, is the crux of Christian living and it all began with that gift of the Spirit given by Jesus to the disciples at Pentecost and given to us at our baptism. Our parish is a vibrant and active Christian community. If you would like to join us, particularly those who may not attend our Masses regularly or new residents in the area, we would love to welcome you here as part of our friendly, inclusive and familyoriented community. Our Mass times and contact details are as follows: • Saturday: 5:30pm Vigil Mass with choir • Sunday: 7:30am Mass and 9:30am Mass with choir and children’s liturgy. • www.padrepioglenmorepark.org.au Ph. 4737 9735 • 34 – 38 William Howell Drive Looking forward to welcoming you! Soul Matters Without hope our soul shrivels up and it is impossible to live well. This is true regardless of what we think about God – without hope we die inside. Some years ago scientists placed two mice in separate beakers of water - one in complete darkness, and the other with a pinhole of light shining through. The mouse with the pinhole of light swam for hours longer than the one in darkness because the light gave it hope. So what is “hope”? On my final day at high school our principal, Mr. Flowers, said something I have never forgotten: “Students, whatever else you have gained from your time at school, remember this: ‘Always have something to look forward to.’” On one level this might mean planning a good night out on the week-end to keep your spirits up during the work week. On the broader stage of human life, Mr. Flowers was talking about hope. To have hope is to be able to look forward in our lives with the expectation of something good. Hope is to living well, like salivating is to eating well. It is a positive expectation causing our soul to salivate over what is yet to come in our lives. And it is particularly crucial when life throws it’s inevitable challenges at us: when we don’t get the promotion, get sick, face the reality of getting older and dying, experience the pain of a broken relationship or divorce, and so on. To live well in the face of this
6 June 2014 www.glenmoregazette.com.au
sort of darkness we must be able to somehow find light and hope–to keep anticipating goodness despite disappointment, pain and fear. Otherwise at some point there is no point, and we are forced to accept a life half lived or limping on two cylinders. A lack of hope contributes to the shocking statistics on suicide amongst young people in western society. The pressures are enormous. The educational system pressures them to perform. They are also trying to work out who they are amidst the irresponsible barrage of advertising projecting fickle images of “success”. No wonder our kids feel dark in their souls when they struggle to be what society says they must be to be somebody! But we can give them the gift of light and hope by consistently telling our daughters that they are beautiful, and our sons that their lives matter. We can love them, believe in them, and champion the possibilities of their lives–even if they don’t excel academically, win the grand final, or enjoy popularity. When we keep their souls salivating with expectation of something good ahead, we bless their lives with hope and help them to live well. In the same way, the Bible teaches that God loves us. He has a vested interest in our wellbeing, proactively working for our good just as we do for our children. We receive his love through faith in Jesus Christ, and nothing can separate us from it–not divorce, sickness, failure or even death. God is tenaciously working to bring good to our lives, and this is the only true light and hope that we have in the face of some of life’s deepest challenges. Pastor Paul Marshall
Nepean Riding for the Disabled Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP and Penrith Mayor, Ross Fowler, OAM visited the indoor riding arena at Nepean Riding for the Disabled Association last month, to view the completion of works to upgrade the Association’s indoor horse riding arena. The NSW Government’s Community Building Partnership program provided $45,468 to resurface the indoor horse riding arena while Penrith City Council provided $10,000 to replace the boards around the arena. “I am delighted to see the benefits to the most vulnerable in our community from State Government funded projects such as this one which I have supported from the start to finish. To see the final product ready to be used and enjoyed in my electorate of Mulgoa is a very satisfying experience” Tanya Davies said. “Penrith City Council welcomes the State Government’s funding for a new indoor arena surface for the Samuel Marsden Riding facility, and Council is pleased to also contribute $10,000 to replace the boards around the arena” said Penrith City Council Mayor, Ross Fowler. “This is the latest in a number of upgrades Council has done recently for the facility and the joint funding will enable children and adults of all abilities to enjoy horse riding in more contemporary facilities” said Mayor Fowler. “The cost of upgrading this indoor riding arena could never have been met without State Government and Penrith City Council funding support” said Association President, Narelle O’Kell. The Club is located in Orchard Hills and is run by about 30 volunteers and provides support to 20 people currently, who are living with a disability.

Winter is No Excuse With winter here it is very easy to give in to those food cravings. The cakes, hot chocolate, sweet biscuits etc that make you feel good when the weather has you feeling a bit down. Before long you have put on several kilos, your clothes are feeling a bit tighter and you know it’s going to be a struggle to reduce the weight again before summer. It’s true that weight reduction or weight gain is relative to the calories in versus calories out, but being stressed, or feeling down also plays a big part. Snacking and binging can help soothe us during stressful and emotional times - especially carbohydrate foods like sugar and starches, because they help distract us from our troubles (albeit, only for the short term) and trigger our body to produce endorphins (feel good hormones). Believe it or not, you often crave foods which you are sensitive to so as well as increasing your weight, giving in to your food cravings could also result in other health problems. What do you crave? What is your comfort food? Do you put yourself on a guilt trip after you have indulged, and swear you’ll never do that again – well until next time anyway. We weren’t born with cravings, addictions etc – they are however something which we can hide behind or use to cover up, or replace something that’s missing in our lives. Eliminating your cravings is simple and can have long term effects on your overall health. It’s up to you.

COUNSELLING CORNER with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All P: 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 E: lindacassell@bigpond.com Do you remember the book ‘The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People’ by Stephen Covey? I revisited the wisdom in the book when I accepted an invitation to undertake a leadership programme based on Covey’s insights. Habit 2 “Begin with the end in mind” states that “if you do not know where you are going, you do not know where you will finish up.’ A good way to keep the end in mind is to develop a Personal Mission Statement. Your Personal Mission Statement focuses on what to be and on the attitudes and actions that will help you to become that person. Covey suggests that you take some time to imagine your 80th birthday party. Who is present at the party? What would you like them to say about you? Another way to ground your Personal Mission Statement is to imagine you are attending your own funeral .What would you like that person giving the eulogy to say about you and the life you have lived? What values do you hold dear…..family ? to be hardworking ,loyal, trustworthy, kind etc If we assume that life is not a dress rehearsal then we are really called to live out our own Personal Mission Statement every day. And finishing with another of Covey’s quotes: “ it’s ok to sit on the fence if you need a rest, but sooner or later it’s time to decide what you want. And remember … not deciding, just letting life happen … that’s a decision as well. “ May the force be with you!!!
Maintenance Work Continues at Schools The Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP, visited Glenmore Park High School in May to see first-hand some of the maintenance work that has been carried out over the Easter school holiday period. There were 17 projects worth $97,032 undertaken at 5 schools in Tanya’s electorate during the Term One school holidays which just ended. During the Term One break, work had started or continued on construction and maintenance projects at Glenmore Park High School ($19,465), Oxley Park Public School ($33,255), Kurrambee School ($15,089), Regentville Public School ($2,110) and St Marys Senior High School ($27,114). “The school holiday period provides the opportunity to repair school facilities, or start new projects, while students and staff are out of the classroom,” Tanya Davies said Some of these works include maintenance on doors and door frames, ceilings and fencing repairs, roofing, gutters and downpipes repairs, and pavements. “While many of these projects are small, they make a big difference to the school environment” said Stuart Harvie and Lisette Gorick, who are presently the acting Principals at Glenmore Park High School. “The NSW Government has committed over $2.4 billion to school infrastructure and maintenance over the past three years; this includes 16 new or relocated public schools and major upgrades to 30 schools across the State” Tanya Davies said. $320 million annually has been dedicated to school maintenance, a 23% increase from the previous Government’s last budget. “We are also delivering projects more efficiently. We have introduced an industry-standard method of delivery for the Department of Education’s capital works program, creating savings estimated at $8-$10 million every year. By working smarter we are delivering more facilities to NSW schools.” Tanya Davies said.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com After many years working with kids, and having three of my own, I am firmly of the belief that parents talk too much. There’s too much questioning, nagging, lecturing, telling them what/how/ when/where/why, taking over, yelling, and yakkity-yak. Too much noise. When my kids come home from school, I ask “how was school”. I never expect any answer other than “good”. And I leave it at that, I rarely ask any more questions. Just asking the question opens up the possibility of communication. I know that each of them will come to me throughout the evening to tell me about their day. They do that when they are in the right space and frame of mind to talk, when they have sifted through all of the information and interactions they have experienced. And when they come to me, I LISTEN. I tend not to ask many questions, but I do a lot of reflective listening – repeating what they have said to me, reflecting on their emotions, being present, being silent and holding that space between their inner and outer worlds. I do the same with the children I work with. Reflective listening enables the child and I to get to the heart of what is bothering the child with very little effort. Everyone likes to be heard and have their thoughts and feelings validated. Parents are surprised when I tell them that I rarely offer solutions to children for their problems. I work alongside rather than stand over the top of. Kids are smart. Through reflective listening, children often get to the solution themselves, and because they have come up with it, they are committed to it. Dr Beth Onufrak in the USA has written a wonderful article on her blog “A Child in Mind” (wordpress). Titled “What’s wrong with the Wh questions?” she explains that questions shut a child down very quickly. Dr Onufrak says that “Wh” questions can be unhelpful because they: 1. Shut down a child’s own narration and conception of the problem 2. Block a child’s sharing of the salient details to him 3. Pigeonhole a child’s thinking into your categories of thought 4. Build a child’s frustration with us adults 5. Make a child more upset from the communication gap She advises that a better alternative is to say to the child “Tell me all about it”. I was talking with a parent recently. She said that her child comes to her to ask for help with a task, but when she tries to help her, the child storms off in a rage. The well-meaning parent then runs after the child asking her lots of “wh” questions to try to get to the bottom of the problem. The child becomes more resentful, and nothing gets resolved. I said that it sounded like there was a disconnect there somewhere, a gap between what the child wanted and what the parents saw as the child’s needs. I suggested that “I messages” are pretty good at sorting out misunderstandings. I wondered how the child might respond if the parent went to the child when she was calm and said something like “I don’t understand it when you ask me to help you with something, and I try to show you what to do, you then get upset and storm off. I would really like to know what I can do better next time, so we can work it out together”. “I messages” communicate how you feel about something without placing blame on anyone. Making time to ‘be with’ our kids, spending time, showing affection, being present, being available, being responsive and reflective, being alongside, and listening, truly listening, to our kids. When we do this , our kids return the effort in spades through being amazingly competent and communicative young ones.

Why use a Mortgage Broker? Mortgage Brokers now write 50% of all new home loans, a number that is steadily increasing and for good reason. Here’s why you should consider using a Broker for your next loan. 1. Compare Loans. There are hundreds of home loans available today and a Broker can easily and quickly compare rates, fees and features to find the perfect loan for you. 2. Lower Interest. Brokers have access to exactly the same rates and discounts available through the branches. In fact, some Brokers can negotiate rates to get discounts that aren’t available from the Banks directly. 3. Reduce Costs. Borrowing more than 80% of the value of your home means that Lenders Mortgage Insurance (LMI) must be paid. LMI varies from lender to lender and on a loan of $500,000 on a home worth $550,000 LMI ranges from $11,700 to $26,100. Choose poorly and you could be over $14,000 behind before you’ve paid a cent in interest. 4. Save Time. Brokers compile your application and liaise directly with a lender on your behalf. 5. Skilled Trusted Advisor. Broker qualifications are higher than those required for their bank employed counterparts and Brokers work for your best interests rather than the Banks, advising how to structure your finances to suit your requirements. So the question really should be, why wouldn’t you use a Mortgage Broker?
Fight for a Direct School Bus
from...Pg.1.
Till now, students living in Glenmore Park who attend McCarthy Catholic College were required to disembark at Penrith station and board a second bus service to complete their journey, causing overcrowding, discomfort and often delays for students arriving at school or home. This led to many parents refraining from using the bus service altogether, adding to traffic congestion in and out of Glenmore Park during school pick up and drop off times. In March 2012, Tanya Davies surveyed Glenmore Park parents whose children attend McCarthy Catholic College. A resounding 148 families responded to the survey indicating that they would make use of a direct bus route service, if the State Government were to provide it. McCarthy Catholic College Principal Robyn Meddows and Deputy Principal Glen Trefoni have been strong proponents of this change to the bus service from Glenmore Park as well. The changeover of bus services at Penrith station has led them to commit to additional staff being on site at Penrith station to supervise and help ensure there is a minimum of disruption for students attending their school. “We are so relieved that we don’t have to commit our limited staff resources to supervise this activity any longer and we can now reassign them to much needed duties on the school grounds” said Principal Robyn Meddows. Strong support for improvements to the bus service was also provided by Stuart Ayres, Member for Penrith; whose state electorate includes Emu Plains where McCarthy Catholic College is located. Meanwhile, Tanya Davies will continue to lobby the Minister for Transport for a dedicated school bus service that journeys direct from Glenmore Park to McCarthy Catholic College and return.

Border Collie Fun Day on Sunday 6th July RSPCA Million Paws Walk on Sunday 18th 2014, 11am to 3pm! May 2014!! Dr Katrina Warren and Kelly Gill are holding their third Border Collie Fun Day at Castle Hill Showground, Dog Arena (Doran Drive, Castle Hill). It will be a family friendly event, inviting Border Collie owners to bring their dog’s for a social afternoon of Border Collie activities. They also expect a lot of spectators as people are welcome without a dog. ‘Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill are delighted to welcome Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital to our Border Collie Fun Day. Dr Camille Brandt will be our official vet on the day and will also be offering free veterinary checks and answering your Border Collie health questions.’ The Fun Day will be showcasing a wide variety of Border Collie activities, including sheep herding, tricks, flyball, agility, treibball, nose work, heelwork to music, obedience and frisbee. Treibball (pronounced try-ball) is an awesome new dog sport and is a fun game for dogs of any size or breed. Dogs learn to run around 8 large exercise balls, pushing the balls one at a time with their nose or shoulder straight into the goal as quickly as possible. Treibball promotes better teamwork and communication between dog and handler as they develop skills in distance work and impulse control. There will be stalls, show bags, fun competitions, photo opportunities and interactive activities. Dr Katrina and Kelly Gill are also out to find the fastest border collie over a sprint, racing against the clock. The day will also be raising money for Border Collie Cancer Research, with a huge raffle and lots of other fundraising activities. The RSPCA Million Paws Walk is in its 20th year and is a great way to raise money for animals in need. Staff from the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital attended the Blue Mountains RSPCA Million Paws Walk at Katoomba on Sunday 18 May 2014 and had a great day out with their dogs and family members. Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital raised $730.00 online to support the RSPCA. Thank you to our generous supporters. The RSPCA is NOT an agency of the Australian Government and therefore relies on the generosity of the community to continue it’s vital daily work. Along with shelters, volunteer branches and Inspectors, they also fund an education team that visits schools, universities and community groups to educate the importance of treating all living things with kindness. Thank you for making the RSPCA NSW your charity of choice.
Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.
KEEPING FIT WITH Rj
Running Made Easy! Running doesn’t come naturally for everyone, and chances are, if you’re new to running, the thought of it is probably quite overwhelming! The good news is, running is an activity that the human body was designed to do. With proper training and by using the correct techniques, you will find that running will be easier for you and you will experience less fatigue afterwards. According to Chiropractor, Dr Brett Hill, the best ways to avoid poor posture and improve your running technique are; • Land on your mid-foot (or just behind the ball of your foot). This will reduce the impact and allow your heel to be lowered more gently to the ground. • Have good posture - stand up straight, engage your glutes and abs, whilst keeping your shoulders back. • Lean forward to ensure your centre of gravity is in front of your feet. Dr Hill believes ‘the combination of not striking with your heels and leaning forward, leads to a much more natural run with greater speed and less effort’. ppy Training! Give it a try next time!
