The food court zone will be home to The Coffee Club, Ikura Kaiten Sushi, Wokken Noodle Bar and Empire Kebabs. Travel, Realty & Financial Services, an independent women’s fashion retailer, as well as a handbag & luggage retailer are also features of the new building. A few months ago, a logo design competition was held for the children of the community, giving the children an opportunity to be a part of something very special. The entries received were fantastic which made it very hard to choose 3 winning entries. Elements of the winning entries were used to create the final logo. The new logo will be featured on both buildings, as one united centre. “Our opening date is set for Wednesday 29th November, with major festivities taking place on Saturday 2nd December. We welcome the community to join us at our opening and enjoy their new & improved Town Centre” Marketing Manager, Giulia Barron, said.
Local Wins Penrith Business Person of the Year Award In today’s world, it’s very rare to do something that has never been done before. But, recently at the Penrith Business Awards, Glenmore Park resident Debbie O’Connor and her young graphic designer did what has never been done before in the history of the awards. Debbie won the Penrith Business Person of the Year award and Brooke Allender won the Youth Employee award, both from The Creative Fringe. Debbie is no stranger to these awards having won six of them for her design studio White River Design, three for her newest business The Creative Fringe, and has been awarded the Business Person of the Year award in 2012 as well as 2107. “It was very humbling winning this award, especially when I know just how hard everyone has to work to build and grow their business,” commented Mrs O’Connor. “The most thrilling part of the night was when Brooke won her category. She is incredibly dedicated and such a hard worker, so I was bursting with pride when she was recognised for everything that she has achieved”. Debbie is also the 2017 Mulgoa Woman of the Year. FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH
Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.
Your First Christmas! It is sad when life becomes so routine that special things, things deserving celebration, are largely taken for granted. For many people, Christmas has a danger of becoming like that. What I mean is that, every year, Christmas makes a big splash, but then we move on, hardly noticing it has happened, until next year when we do it all again. And really, it is no surprise some of us feel like this, because it seems as if Christmas decorations and paraphernalia are on sale in the shops earlier and earlier, and it can all become a bit “ho hum, here we go again.” Yet at Glenmore Park Anglican Church (GPAC), we know that the joy of Christmas, the joy of celebrating the coming of Jesus into our world, is always something that should be celebrated. It is something to be enjoyed and is something to make a big deal about. We know this because in the Bible, God declares how Jesus came into our world to give us a fresh start with God and a real, sure hope for the future as we put our faith and trust in Jesus, committing our lives to him. At GPAC, especially at Christmas, we want to share this message of great joy and hope with everyone in Glenmore Park and beyond. Our Christmas celebrations kick off with the Christmas Gingerbread Extravaganza (see the advertisement on this page).

Linda’s Lustrous Local Landscapes Glenmore Park is certainly not short on natural beauty. With serene lakes, fascinating flora and fauna coupled with the stunning backdrop of the Blue Mountains – it is no wonder that local artist Linda Ereaut Douglass has embraced our exquisite community in her latest series of paintings which she has aptly named ‘Pathways’. Linda, who was born and raised in Penrith, felt drawn back to the area after moving away to Orange to raise her family. Despite travelling around Australia and overseas visiting galleries and art shows, she gathers most of her ideas from her daily travels and enjoys creating art that reflects life. Linda explained to the Gazette, “We are so fortunate in this little corner of the world. I wanted to celebrate the quiet peace and tranquillity of a Sunday stroll around the lake in Glenmore Park. This series was inspired by the clarity of light, intense blue skies and the unexpected beauty of well-trodden paths that we find ourselves on, in our everyday lives”. Each painting in the series has taken several weeks to create due to the time required for each layer of oils to dry on the canvas. After the final layer, the paintings took months to dry completely before Linda could varnish them. It is Linda’s hope that she may get the opportunity to exhibit the Pathway series works together somewhere locally. Linda also enjoys painting large abstract works in acrylics using lots of colour and movement and has several paintings which she has exhibited online with Australian Studio Painters and The Australian Art Movement. Linda is hoping to do more ‘en plein air’ works this summer, which involves taking her easel and paints outside to catch the light and finish a painting in one go. You can see more of Linda’s amazing artwork on Instagram: www.instagram.com/_ abstractia_. Linda’s 4th painting in the ‘Pathways’ series - ‘Lake Path’ | Image: Linda Ereaut Douglass. FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School
Will Everything End Well? Our souls find rest when we know everything will end well. If we are not sure, our souls can spin like a computer hard-drive with worry. Whether or not some things work out well is in our control. For example, studying for exams has a direct bearing on things ending well. The same is true of preparing well for a party. Or think about making the effort to talk through a disagreement. The outcomes here are reasonably in our control. But for some things, whether or not they end well are clearly out of our control, and they can throw our souls into turmoil and overdrive. Think for example about our world. In some ways living on this wonderful island called Australia insulates us from some of the world’s troubles. But when I listen to the news I soon worry about the sort of future our children will face. Is terrorism a real threat? Will resources run out? Will the world as we know it end? If so, how will it end? Another thing out of our control is the fact that all people will eventually die a physical death. This might sound morbid, but to really live well – for our souls to thrive – we must first come to terms with death so that we are not looking over our shoulder waiting for it as we get older. That’s easier said than done because it is out of our control. In the Bible Jesus teaches that we should not worry about what tomorrow brings, but instead we should orient our lives toward him and that when we do we can trust him to work things out. This includes the future of the world our kids will live in, and what will happen when we eventually experience death. If we believe in Jesus we are not insulated from hardship but we can be certain everything will end well for us, and this is a key to finding rest for our souls. Go well, Paul

If unanswered please leave a message & I will contact you Eleven townhomes were released off the plan in late September as part of the final stage of ‘Outlook’, a boutique community within Mulgoa Rise estate. All previous stages have now sold out. The townhomes in this prestigious Penrith community are situated on a vantage point near the entrance of the estate, bordered by bushland corridor and sporting fields, and some have views to the Blue Mountains. The townhomes are all 4-bedroom, with 2.5 bathrooms, some with study/media room, others with upstairs family room. All have premium inclusions and European appliances as standard. Offering resort style living, ‘Outlook’ will comprise, when complete, 48 two-storey, four bedroom town homes, with residents enjoying exclusive access to their own swimming pool, neighbourhood park, BBQ and gazebo, all recently completed. Residents will also have access to the public facilities at Mulgoa Rise, including two sporting fields, two playgrounds, a picnic area, cycleway and walkway connecting the estate to Mulgoa Nature Reserve. There are also golf courses, lakes and rivers located nearby. Mulgoa Rise is being developed by Mulpha Norwest, developers of the international award-winning Norwest Business Park; the highly acclaimed Bella Vista Waters residential estate; Sanctuary Cove on the Gold Coast; Hayman Island and the Intercontinental Hotel. Mulpha Norwest Executive General Manager Tim Spencer said Outlook is a boutique community offering a highly sought-after resort-style lifestyle. “The townhomes released are all individually designed with exceptional quality fixtures and fittings. We expect these final townhomes to sell quickly,” he said. Mulgoa Rise, when complete, will offer a contemporary village lifestyle with all the conveniences of nearby town amenities. With proposed neighbourhood shops and proposed school adjacent to the estate, Mulgoa Rise is also just minutes away from Glenmore Park shopping centre, and a 10 minute drive to Westfield Penrith Plaza shopping centre with its abundance of restaurants, cafés, shopping and entertainment. The nearest train station, with direct links to the city, is a short 10 minute drive away. There is also a good selection of kindergartens, preschool and childcare centres, as well as public and private schools located nearby. PARENTS CORNER
Getting Results It’s natural to want your child to do well at school and some parents use a reward such as money to encourage their children to get better grades. I’ve often heard of parents offering their child money for every “A” on their end of term report card. One of the problems with giving children financial incentives for good end-of-term grades is that the reward comes too long after the effort is made. Rather than waiting till the end of term, it’s much more effective to set up a system of rewards which are brief and frequent and which encourage positive daily habits. These daily habits then build towards an eventual outcome, such as a good homework and study routine. However, you can encourage children to build good study and homework habits without having to resort to offering money. Why not try a reward such as spending time with your child doing an activity they really like? Or you could offer a special treat you know they’ll enjoy. The object is to encourage good routines by giving extra attention and praise or small frequent rewards when they are doing the right thing. When kids are struggling, that little bit of extra attention can encourage them into new patterns of behaviour – and they may end up getting that A after all! An Alternative Setting for Education Home schooling is becoming an increasingly popular educational option in Australia. Under the Education Act 1990, home schooling is education delivered in a child’s home by a parent or guardian. Currently over four thousand children are being home schooled in New South Wales alone with approximately a third of those students living in Western Sydney. There are numerous reasons why parents are choosing this alternate setting as the preferred method for their child’s education. According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), the top reason for electing to home school is due to philosophical reasons. Additional reasons cited include special learning needs, behavioural, religious, bullying and other nonspecified. Regardless of the reasons why parents choose to home school their child, families in this state are required to register with NESA, develop a learning program based on the curriculum and monitor their children’s progress. There are many organisations and support networks available for families who home school; parents are encouraged to connect with other home schooling parents to share ideas and resources, support one another and provide opportunities for children to socialise. Another interesting alternative to regular home schooling that is getting a lot of media attention currently is the concept of ‘unschooling’. This somewhat radical approach operates under the premise of children learning through every day experiences and learning naturally without the conformities of the curriculum. This model of education does not currently meet registration requirements in NSW. If you are considering home schooling your children it is important to consider the positive and negative aspects in order to make an informed decision. As the teacher you will need to be patient, prepared to deal with the possible misbehaviour of your children whilst encouraging them to learn. Conversely, you will get to spend extra time with your children, have a more flexible lifestyle and be able to cater for their individual needs. Home schooling can be very stressful, but it is also very rewarding. This option is not for every family. Parents who are not prepared to make the commitment to be an effective teacher should avoid it. Article: Sara Drebber @ www.educatered.com.au

Latimer Shines in Final of Gibson Shield Leonay Golf Club’s Gibson Shield Men’s Pennant team recently reached the Final of that competition last month, but unfortunately fell short of ultimate glory, falling to Northbridge Golf Club two matches to one. Paul Latimer (Glenmore Park) and partner Jack Mallard started the day well for Leonay, with a solid win in the number one spot. The number two pairing of Ian Gribble and Marc Vanderham lost their match, leaving the result of the final in the hands of the number three pairing of Warwick Chin-Nam and Trevor Day. The pair were locked together with their opponents at the end of eighteen holes and it would not be until the twenty-first hole a winner could be found - and it was Northbridge. The Leonay squad of Ron Lammey, Ian Gribble, Marc Vanderham, Paul Latimer, Jack Mallard, Warwick Chin-Nam and Trevor Day did achieve a major milestone for the season, guiding the Leonay Club to it’s first-ever Final in the Gibson Shield. Fast Track your child's skills.
When Should A Child Learn To Swim? Last summer was terrible in terms of drownings, one of the worst on record, and as a consequence many parents I have spoken to want to get their children swimming as soon as possible. But when should a child start swimming lessons? Swim Australia and the Australian Swim Schools Association recommend starting lessons from 6 months, but you can and should practice early water familiarisation before this at home. Babies are not born with a fear of the water - fear and anxiety around water is acquired - as children develop independence and imagination some children will develop a fear of swimming or going under water. Make sure baby has regular baths and showers, and becomes comfortable with the sensation of water being trickled and then poured over their head from birth. Your 6 month old will then accept the water more readily, and with much less fear than an older child, allowing them to develop early water safety and awareness skills In addition to safety, there are other benefits for babies introduced to the water early, including the development of gross motor skills and improved strength, co-ordination and balance, as baby is supported by the water and less restricted by gravity. In addition, a four-year project led by Griffith University has concluded that children who swim show more advanced physical and cognitive skills than those who don't, including better visual-motor abilities, (such as drawing lines and colouring in shapes), and excelling in following instructions, language, counting and solving mathematical problems. Please remember though that learning to swim is just one of the many layers of swim safety needed, a child who can swim is still not drown proof. Fence the pool, shut the gate, learn CPR and most importantly, constantly supervise and have babies and toddlers within arms reach at all times.

Osteoporosis - Hippocrates Was Right! I embarked on the story of osteoporosis as I see so many patients fall into the simplistic yet enticing notion that the solution to their condition is an ‘eat more calcium or Vitamin D’ story, or worse, that ‘a drug that actually disrupts bone regeneration’ may help. Often such simplistic yet attractive interventions may not improve bone health or strength at all, but may in some cases be risking poorer bone and general health. By now we should be able to appreciate that osteoporosis is a diet & lifestyle problem. Good bone physiology depends on having all the right ingredients present to allow bone cells (of all types) to do their work properly. This means having a diet that provides all the protein, vitamins & minerals needed, and a lifestyle that ensures the correct hormonal & physical stimuli for excellent bone maintenance. Now that we have looked at many of these elements one at a time, I wanted to recap what we’ve learned so the picture becomes clear. Calcium is far less important than made out. Our RDA is 1000mg per day, but Thai men & women on 220-361mg per day from veges fish and meats have much lower hip fracture rates than westerners! Calcium supplements raise risk of heart disease. Protein – ‘from food’ has a direct bone building effect (independent of calorie intake), and does not cause bone loss. Protein isolates (supplements) can cause calcium loss. Vitamin K (from leafy greens, fermented foods and natto) make osteocalcin which binds & keeps calcium in bone. Vitamin D (from midday sunshine – 23% of Australians are vitamin D deficient) improves intestinal calcium uptake & reduces loss through the kidneys; makes osteocalcin Vitamin A (from liver & cod live oil) – without it normal bone
growth & tooth development don’t occur; makes osteocalcin. Magnesium from foods (Sesame seeds, Brazil nuts, almonds, green leafy vegetables) optimises: bone crystal shape for strength & response to bone building hormone PTH; activates vitamin D; reduces inflammation. Excess ‘supplemental’ Magnesium may reduce bone strength. Boron (avocados nuts and dried fruits) raises free testosterone & estrogen, so reduces inflammation & increases production of bone building proteins; stops urinary loss of calcium, magnesium & phosphorus; improves intestinal absorption of magnesium and deposition in bone. Potassium (green leafy veges, potatoes, nuts, seeds, legumes, fish) may be the most important foods you can eat - decreases bone resorption increases bone formation, significantly reduces urinary calcium loss. Silicon (Horsetail herb, dates, kidney beans) during growth cross-links collagen and proteoglycans to make the collagen in bone matrix more calcifiable & increases bone strength; facilitates bone formation independent of vitamin D. Exercise - skipping, bounding and depth jumping exercises done 6 days per week for 1 year were effective for reversing bone loss in menopausal women. Doing weights or walking doesn’t show same results!! Salt (added NaCl in foods) causes urinary calcium loss even if calcium intake is high. Excellent diet & lifestyle minimises your chances of chronic disease and having to take the many drugs that cause bone loss. The 2500 year old words of Hippocrates ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’ still rings true & applies to your bones too!

Kitten Adoption - Adopt a Friend for Life!
Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must also be given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit.
Santa Photos With Your Pets
Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 2 lovely kittens ready for adoption now! The kittens are 3 months old. There is 1 female tortoiseshell colour and 1 black and white male. They have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision.
Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2017 to take photos with your pets. Santa will be here from Friday 1st December until Tuesday 24th December 2017, Mon-Fri (9am-7pm) and on Saturdays (9am-12pm). For a $10 cash donation, your Santa photo is presented in a Christmas card, with all proceeds donated to the Guide Dogs NSW. We have Christmas themed props for your pet’s photos (e.g. hats and scarves), feel free to bring in your own outfits.

Local Cricket Fans Set to be Bowled Over by Sydney Thunder Penrith Council has partnered with Sydney Thunder to bring a thrilling game of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) to Penrith just in time for the summer school holidays. The second round game of the WBBL will see Sydney Thunder take on the Melbourne Stars at Howell Oval on Saturday 16 December. The match is part of a free family-fun day which includes meet and greet opportunities, face painting and giveaways from 12pm. The Sydney Thunder team features talented local cricketer Naomi Stalenberg, who was instrumental in their run to the WBBL title last season. This year, Naomi is joined by Penrith Cricket Club teammate Lisa Griffiths. Penrith Mayor John Thain is encouraging everyone to be part of the action and join in the fun. “What better way to kick-start the summer holidays than with a game of world-class cricket in our own backyard. I’ll be there to cheer on Sydney Thunder and I hope cricket fans and local players will join me,” Cr Thain said. According to figures released by Cricket Australia*, cricket participation has grown more than 9% in the past year to 1.4 million players nationally. Nearly 400,000 of these players are female, an increase of 80,000 on the previous year. Cr Thain said it’s wonderful to see more women and girls participating in cricket. “Council is a strong supporter of women’s sport and in particular cricket, with our collaboration with Sydney Thunder now in its third year. This event recognises the achievements of female players and has become an annual celebration of women’s sport in Penrith.” COMMUNITY NOTICEBOARD Saturday November 11 Open Mic Night 6pm – 8pm. THE LAST WORD Next time I put pen to paper for 'The Last Word', it will be less than 30 days until Christmas. Many of you (like me!) will be frantically preparing their minds ready for the season ahead. I must admit, I am a huge fan of this time of year. The weather is glorious, the landscape is picturesque (especially in our part of the world).... and if you stop for just a moment of your busy day, you can hear the wind blowing, the birds chirping and all kinds of natural beauty that surrounds us! I know many of you have been waiting patiently for this month to arrive, for a number of reasons, including the much anticipated opening of the new Glenmore Park Town Centre building. Read all about it in our lead story! We have a wonderful recipe to kickstart your 'Christmas' spirit on page 10, while our resident Vet Camille steps it up a gear and talks 'Santa Photos with your Pets' on page 17; if the thought of Christmas being so near wasn't already scary enough! 'Being happy is a do-it-yourself project', friends close to me will know just how much these words resonate with me... Enjoy your Community News.
