FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.
What’s Coming Up at Glenmore Park Anglican Church It’s pretty common to hear people say “the kids are our future”. There’s a whole lot of truth in that isn’t there! It is so important isn’t it, for us to think about what it is that we want our kids to learn and the values we want to them to have, and in turn, to pass onto their children. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church we believe that a key way to do this is to let our children know about the God who loves them and about how good it is to love him. Jesus himself said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. I tell you the truth, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.” And he took the children in his arms, put his hands on them and blessed them.” Many of the activities at our Church are set up with this goal of helping children know Jesus. (“Voltage” – our Thursday afternoon Kids Club 4.45pm for Years K – 6; and “Sunday Kids” 10.15am & 5pm on Sundays). Another great opportunity that kids will have to learn more about our good God is at the April Holiday Kids Club, 9am – 12.30pm Wednesday 18th – Friday 20th April. We have run these Kids Holiday Clubs each year for many years and the kids have an absolutely fantastic time! Lots of games, activities, music, skits, stories, friends and food! The Holiday Club will provide a safe and fun environment for your children with trained and experienced leaders. To book your spot see the details in the advertisement on this page. Sunday at GPAC – at Church on Sundays in April we will be looking at what the Bible says about the most significant event of all time – Jesus’ resurrection from the dead – and how that changes everything. We would love to see you! How to Explain Your Pain I took the skin off my shin the other day pushing my trailer up my driveway. Ouch! My pain was easy to explain. More and more people I meet speak about deep, inner pain that they can’t explain. Bad things happen to good people, and often these things are not addressed properly at the time. Perhaps we were sexually abused and were embarrassed to tell anyone. Perhaps we were constantly called “useless” as a teenager or made fun of because of the shape of our body. Perhaps dad just didn’t ever come to our games because he was too busy with work. We might have tragically lost a child or suffered emotionally when our parents divorced. These sorts of experiences, big or small, have a huge impact on us. When we don’t deal with them properly at the time they happen, and we just bury them instead, associated lies get stuck somehow deep in our souls. It’s like that layer of our souls grows

over, trapping the experience, the lies, and the pain they create deep inside us like a splinter with its toxin. We come to believe we are not loved, that we are alone, that we have cause to fear, that we are worthless and unlovely, or that we will never… This can leave us with deep inner pain, affecting our relationships and stealing away our peace and joy. The clue: we feel hurt, afraid, angry, alone, rejected, insecure or hopeless without knowing why. If you suffer this way you have a couple of options. You can tough it out and hope it goes away - but it won’t until you embrace the second option. This is to address the pain properly by reaching into the layers of your experience and challenging the lies to heal your wounded soul. I would be happy to talk to you (paul@fvc.org.au) about our teams trained to help you with the second option by bringing the healing words of Jesus to your soul.

Real People Exceptional Service Achieving Results Local Area Experts Glenmore Park’s Bella Osbourne is 9-years old and suffers from autism and a debilitating and rare condition which can cause her to have continuous epilepsy. Bella is constantly required to attend treatment at Westmead Children’s Hospital and as the family doesn’t have a car, they need to travel by taxi, bus and public transport. There was a need for a wheelchair or stroller, to assist with the travel. Emu Plains Lions stepped in to provide a Convaid Rodeo stroller, sourced from Dejay Medical and Scientific P/L at Seven Hills, an NDIS approved supplier, at a cost of just over $5,000. The funding has been jointly provided by the Emu Plains Club and the Australian Lions Foundation; the ALF being set up to provide financial assistance in times of need, just like in Bella’s case. Susan Mullen, a trained occupational therapist from Mulgoa, has consulted on the purchase to ensure the stroller is appropriate for Bella’s needs and that it ‘fits’ Bella. Helen Owen, Bella’s Mum said, “It’s all about how thankful we are for the support and help from the Lions Club, and Bella’s new purple coloured chair, in addition to raising awareness of rare diseases and epilepsy. We are so thankful”. When Bella was first diagnosed with PCDH19 Epilepsy, she was one of only 11 in the world. That number soon grew to 15 and, over the years as awareness has grown, there are now over 150 documented cases worldwide. As research and awareness continues to grow, the number of affected individuals is estimated to dramatically jump much higher. There is no cure for Bella and it is likely there will not be in her lifetime but, there is hope that one day there may be a cure or treatment to help children and families in the future. Lions haven’t just donated the stroller and left Helen and Bella. Emu Plains Lions President, Alan Cooper, says “We have asked MP Emma Husar to assist in resolving NDIS issues to get support for the family with transport and help at home. Meanwhile, we are doing ‘little things’ like providing home cooked meals for the family, including a teenage sister, that can be frozen and used on days where constant care for Bella overrides the ability to do something as normal as cook dinner”.

Mulgoa Rise Nearing Completion Since the first release of land in 2011, development at Western Sydney’s premier residential estate, Mulgoa Rise, is nearing completion, with just 88 of 677 home opportunities remaining. Mulgoa Rise will be home to over 500 families when complete. Nestled at the foothills of the Blue Mountains, Mulgoa Rise has its own sporting fields and parks on the estate, with golf courses, lakes and rivers located nearby. This, together with walkways connecting the estate to Mulgoa Nature Reserve, have been a major drawcard for families looking to enjoy a healthy, outdoor lifestyle. According to Mulpha Norwest Executive General Manager, Mr Tim Spencer, the dynamic sense of community and the long-term sustainability of the estate are the result of the diverse choice of housing options available. “Since the beginning we have had a strong focus on building a vibrant, liveable community in Mulgoa Rise. The integrated master planning of parks, walk and cycleways, schools, transport, shopping and other facilities has helped foster this sense of community” Mr Spencer said. “Mulgoa Rise has been master planned to offer a variety of home sites and dwelling choices to appeal to a diverse range of buyers at different life stages”. As well as elevated entry-level home sites starting from 465m², the estate offers larger 750m² + home sites with frontages from 22m and stunning views; completed turnkey ‘Outlook’ townhomes with private park, pool and barbecue; and luxury oversized townhouse ‘Residences’ newly built and open for inspection. “This choice, combined with the genuine village character of the estate, access to community facilities and convenience of nearby town amenities, has proven to be very attractive to buyers” Mr Spencer said. Residents Jocelyn and Paul Zakostelesky purchased a block of land in one of the first releases of land in March 2011 – an elevated block in Highdale Terrace, with views to the Blue Mountains. Paul runs his own IT business and Jocelyn is a teacher’s aid at the local school. “We had been looking for a long time for land to build our home. When we found Mulgoa Rise, it was perfect because it had easy access to all the facilities, just minutes from Glenmore Park Shopping Centre and a 10-minute drive to Westfield Penrith Plaza” said Jocelyn. “We really liked the ambience and sense of community in the estate which still continues today. It’s been a great place to raise a family”. The Zakosteleskys have three boys – aged 14, 13 and 10, and the whole family makes good use of the community amenities. Paul coaches the youngest son’s cricket team on the sporting field at the end of the street, and Jocelyn runs fitness groups there two mornings a week. “It’s a very family friendly estate” Jocelyn said. “There are lots of walkways through the estate and safe places for kids to ride their bikes. The community organises activities including running groups, coffee clubs, and social drinks once a month. During school holidays there are activities for the children including movie nights, magician shows and other events at Easter and Christmas”. “There are lots and lots of things happening, so you can be involved as much or as little as you like. It’s great for families who want a healthy active lifestyle”. Mr Spencer said Mulgoa Rise is now widely recognised as a community success story - vibrant, thriving and self-sustaining into the future. “We are confident that with the population and economic growth of Western Sydney, with improved transport links, job opportunities and the soon-to-commence construction of the international airport at Badgerys Creek, Mulgoa Rise will continue to be a great place to live and a highly sought-after location for many years to come”. Mulpha has a track record of success in building sustainable communities. Its team of people work together and design and integrate the latest thinking into innovative new residential and lifestyle estates/precincts that combine liveability, walkability, diversity and communities of the future. The final stages of vacant home sites and completed homes are now available to view. To find out more, contact Arthur Cox on 1300 272 300 or visit www.mulgoarise. com.au.

LEARN TO Local Dance Club, “Panther Squares” recently celebrated their 27th Birthday, with a celebration party taking place in Glenmore Park last month. The Club meets weekly on a Wednesday evening at the Surveyors Creek Community Centre in Glenmore Park. Their style of dancing is Modern Square Dancing, with a person known as a “Caller” calling out the dance moves to popular music. They started back in 1991 and the Caller then was Jonnie Dixon. In 1995, Maree Huffadine took over calling and still runs the club today! There are still 6 original dancers that have been with the club since it started. The “Squares” currently have around 25 members dancing regularly and are keen to welcome new members. On their party night, they welcomed 6 new dancers and ran free introductory lessons for them as well as supplying a beautiful supper. It was a fun social evening of dancing had by all. There are many square dance groups around Australia and it is enjoyed all around the world. “Personally, since I lost my husband 3 years ago, I found myself at home and not getting out much at all. I’ve been dancing with this club for twelve months now. I’m out having fun and laughing again and getting lots of exercise and increasing my fitness level too. I’m particularly happy that I don’t necessarily need a partner to go square dancing as two lines are formed, one of men and one of ladies, so you are partnered up with different people to dance with” smiled member Susanne Horvat. La Trio –It’s Not Just a Place, It’s a Feeling
Long-time residents of Glenmore Park, Janice and Stephen Hall, have joined with old friends and travel buddies, Angie and John Sellwood of Silverdale, to bring a long-awaited gift and homewares store to Glenmore Park Town Centre; La Trio Gifts and Homewares. La Trio Gifts and Homewares is not just a place, it’s a feeling. The reality started for them with a pop-up store in the recently opened new section of the Glenmore Park Town Centre, just before Christmas. This gave them the opportunity to present themselves and their quality products to local residents. The response was positive and with the area growing in population, this cemented their commitment to open their new store, opposite Woolworths in the original part of the Glenmore Park Town Centre in February this year. La Trio offers a large range of gifts for all occasions including religious, birthdays, infant toys, snuggly blankets and much more. Also special to their store is the must see “Mancave” section and their beautiful range of all Australian made soy candles and diffusers. They also specialise in making personal gift baskets on request. Their homewares range boasts unique pieces to suit your individual needs and style including throws, cushions, wall art, clocks and mirrors. They also have a beautiful range of silk flowers and succulents to compliment any décor. So, save yourself a trip to Penrith and come in and visit their friendly staff who will assist you with all your gifts and homeware needs. Setting Limits And Boundaries
I’m seeing a lot of stroppy three-year-olds in my work at the moment. Families are streaming in through the door with stroppy three-year-old in tow. Too many young children are ruling the roost! It’s the same story - aggression and anger from the child. This is what I have learnt in over 20 years of working with families – when a child is aggressive it usually means that there are not enough limits and boundaries, and/or they are applied inconsistently. Kids want to feel safe. Limits and boundaries provide safety. When a child is angry and aggressive, they are asking you to set a limit on that behaviour – their behaviour is saying ‘you are the parent, I am the child and I need help’. Parents don’t know what to do. They frequently don’t have a parenting plan for how to deal with behaviour. So they try many different things. They are inconsistent in their management of behaviour, their approach to the child, and between partners where there are two parents in the home. Parents don’t want to smack their kids and that’s good. What do you teach your kids when you smack them? In order to resolve conflict, I have to hit to get what I want. That’s not the sort of kid I want at my place, no thanks. So, the only other tool left in the tool kit is yelling. And that’s ineffective because kids tune you out, and they just learn to yell to try and get what they want. The thing about setting limits and boundaries is that you don’t have to be mean. As Jane Nelson said “Where did we ever get the crazy idea that in order to make children do better, first we have to make them feel worse? Think of the last time you felt humiliated or treated unfairly. Did you feel like cooperating or doing better?” Setting limits and boundaries is about being calm, consistent, immediate, and decisive. We choose consequences that are related to the mistaken behaviour and apply them consistently, immediately and decisively. We tell the child what to do (rather than what not to do). When they are making poor choices, we tell them what they are doing wrong and what to do instead. When we give instructions, we get close, say their name, and touch them. We pay lots and lots of attention to when they are doing behaviours that we like because it encourages them to do more of that. And as I said last month, stop talking so much. Image | www.pexels.com

Minecraft is a survival game with block-like graphics. You can build houses and tame animals such as pigs, horses, dogs and cats. The interesting thing about Minecraft is that there are two different modes - creative mode and survival mode. Creative mode is where you can fly, you never get hungry and you never lose health points. Survival mode is the exact opposite. The aim of the game is to have lots of food, a big house, a pet and to survive. Or just play for fun and build whatever you want in creative mode! Multi player is also available to connect with other players on Wi-Fi. I like Minecraft because it is a very fun and unique game and I like to challenge myself with what I can build. I recommend this game for anyone over the age of 6. I rate it 5 out of 5 stars. Reviewed by: Lucas Soper who is in Year 4 at Bethany Catholic Primary School

Positive Partnerships in Education It is often said that a child’s education starts at home, so why is it when our children go to school that we often feel we have relinquished all rights to input into their learning? A positive and collaborative home-school relationship is pivotal in creating a supportive environment which encourages learning. Over the years society has become more complicated and these relationships have all too often degenerated. Unfortunately, in many communities, educators and parents just do not seem to have enough time to get to know one another and establish relationships on behalf of the children. Sometimes parents feel discouraged from visiting classrooms and teachers rarely consult with families unless a child is in trouble. The result of this situation is a clear division of home and school with misunderstanding, uncertainty and a lack of mutual respect. This can ultimately lead to a vicious cycle of teachers blaming the parents and parents blaming the teachers which, of course, is a worst-case scenario but it highlights the idea that when parents and teachers are active partners in a child’s education there is more chance of success. So how do we produce a strong home-school connection that will set the stage for a child who will grow up with a love for learning? The resounding answer is clear and authentic communication. The problem, however, is that it needs to occur from both ends to be most effective. Families need to be interested, invested, available and realistic. They need to ensure they speak positively about the school, show how they value education and be willing to accept suggestions and praise. Teachers need to be approachable, open-minded, considerate and available. They must ensure they take the time to get to know the students and share their observations and understanding with families whilst showing respect and involving families in the child’s learning process. If you put these things together, it is a recipe for success which will ultimately lead to a home-school relationship conducive to wellbeing and learning for the student. Sport Bridging the Gap Between Generations Social divisions between young and old have never been wider since the inception of the internet. Generation Y are more comfortable using digital interactive technologies over the Baby Boomer’s preferred value on face-toface. Local Glenmore Park Grandson, Nathan and his 70-year-old Nan Anna have been challenging this common communication stereotype for years with their shared love of the English Premier League. Anna passed down her love of the English Premier League to Nathan when he spent a lot of time at her house at a young age. Not only do they both have a love for English Premier League but there is also a family rivalry, with Nathan supporting Arsenal and his Nan supporting Manchester United. Now they make sure they’re tuning in together when they can or texting each other when their teams are playing. Nathan says the English Premier League has well and truly bridged the 45-year age gap between him saying he’s been a fan ever since he can remember. “When I was younger, there would always be an English Premier League game on in the background because Nan is crazy about her football. Over time I have started to love them myself. Even to the point of getting an Arsenal tattoo on my ankle”. With the finals nearing their tail end in May, you can watch who will take it out on Optus Sport, which is the only place you can watch every match of the English Premier League live at home, or on the go with their app, so you can still catch a game whilst on your morning commute! Local fans can join Nathan and Anna by tuning into their next rival game - Arsenal versus Manchester United, on Optus Sport on Monday 20th April.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT Nourish Mind and Body
Nourish Mind and Body has just opened the doors to its new Colon Hydrotherapy and Wellness Centre at Kingswood. The centre is owned and run by Certified Detoxification Specialist and Colon Hydrotherapist, Julie Mayor. Julie completed her Detoxification training under renowned Dr Robert Morse N.D. in the USA. She is passionate about helping people detoxify and heal themselves from disease and issues such as inflammation, auto-immune conditions, pain, skin issues, and many other health conditions by addressing cellular, glandular and organ weaknesses. To achieve this, she uses individually tailored, tissue specific herbal protocols and diet for detoxification and cellular regeneration. We also offer Colon cleansing (colon hydrotherapy) to assist those suffering with constipation, bloating, IBS, skin conditions, weight issues, gas and other elimination issues. Colon Hydrotherapy is also a very valuable tool for those who are detoxing, as it helps to flush out excess toxins, thus avoiding re-absorption. We use a closed colon hydrotherapy system, meaning that a therapist is with you the whole treatment, which is both safe and comfortable. An infrared sauna will be added to our services in early April 18. The sauna can be used to assist with elimination of toxins through your skin during the detoxification process, specifically our fat cells where our body stores toxic waste. It can also assist with muscle and joint pain and stiffness, stress and fatigue, skin issues and cellulite. Contact Nourish Mind and Body on 02 47 368574 for further information or to make an appointment. We are located at 2/1 Bringelly Rd, Kingswood. Western Sydney has a very high Pacific Island population and our boys are approaching very ‘fragile’ ages in this context. It’s hoped that, in a gentle way, what they learn can extend beyond the team into the wider circles of their life and friends. Taking 20 boys to Samoa for 10 days doesn’t come cheap. The boys and their parents have been involved in many fundraising events over many months. The team are looking for jersey sponsorship for the tour. They will be wearing custom designed jerseys and a kit that reflects the crossover of cultures as well as promoting the club colours. For any questions regarding sponsorship or donations, please contact Gillian Ewer on 0419 219069. Any support will be much appreciated. HEALTH MATTERS

Inflammation – Many People Have It But What Is It? Many patients who visit the clinic have inflammation & therefore pain. Often, they’re taking a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) to manage symptoms. Examples include: • ibuprofen - Nurofen, Advil and Bugesic. • diclofenac –Voltaren, Dinac and Fenac. • naproxen –Naprosyn, Naprogesic, Aleve. • celecoxib – Celebrex. Using these drugs to alleviate inflammatory pain short term (a few days) is appropriate. For long term pain relief however, these drugs seem to be ineffective (which may be why patients are seeking help). Indeed, long term intake may produce negative effects. First, let’s look at what inflammation is & how it causes pain. Inflammation is a beautifully intricate protective mechanism, designed as the body’s response to tissue damage from physical / chemical trauma, or infection. It is a process with distinct stages. At the microscopic level the first phase looks something like this: 1. Cells & tissues are damaged by something. 2. Damaged cells raise the alarm. They do this by releasing chemicals that tell surrounding cells that damage has occurred. 3. Surrounding normal & immune cells then release additional chemicals which: a. bring in immune cells from the blood stream and lymphatic vessels and b. stimulate bone marrow to make & release additional immune cells 4. All these immune cells hone in on the area of damage 5. There they release their own chemicals of alarm to really raise the stakes.
6. 7.
All these chemicals create a fever pitch of activity Immune cells release huge amounts of peroxide, and free radicals to kill any bugs, 8. Still other cells are activated clean dead & dying bugs, body-cells, and bits of tissue Some (but by no means all) of the chemical mediators released during this process include: a. Bradykinin b. Histamine c. Cytokines (protein hormones produced by tissues & immune system – eg Interleukin 1β & TNFa, substance P-for pain, etc) d. Bacterial fragments called endotoxins e. Oxygen free radicals f. Leukotrienes & Prostaglandins (fish-oil based hormones) At a macroscopic level it looks like this: • blood vessels widen & much warm, red blood flows to the damaged area • blood vessel become leaky and fluid flows from blood vessels into tissues • sensitivity of pain receptors greatly increases This produces the 4 ‘Cardinal Signs’ of inflammation: 1. Calor (heat) 2. Rubor (redness) 3. Tumor (swelling from fluid retention) 4. Dolor (pain) The chief concern for most people of course is the pain. It might be pain in the back, the knee, shoulder, it could be your toes, or elsewhere. That’s why patients go to their doctor or chemist and ask for help, and they are often given an NSAID. Next month we will look at what NSAIDS do to alleviate pain.

Happy Easter
Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate... lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local Veterinarian. The Veterinarian will give an injection to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump
may be required, and we may also need to use muscle relaxants and activated charcoal. • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags! • Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around. Check out our website for more information. www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. ď ˛ď€ Easter Wishes! | Image: www.pixabay.com

Reawaken Your Spirit Of Adventure Penrith Council believes that ‘old’ is just a state of mind, which is why we hold the Reimagine Ageing Festival every year. This year’s Festival runs from 4 – 15 April. The Festival is a free event for ‘seniors’ that will reawaken your spirit of fun and adventure, no matter how ‘old’ you are or feel. Penrith Mayor Cr John Thain said this year’s Festival is taking the idea of ‘reimagining ageing’ to a new level. “The Festival program is focusing on the question ‘who says getting older means slowing down?’, which is great,” Cr Thain said. “Age isn’t what it used to be. After all, 60 is the new 40 and I think it’s really important that we provide experiences, opportunities and adventure for ‘seniors’ that are creative and vibrant,” he said. We’re inviting the whole community to come to the Mondo greenspace (between Westfield and the Joan) to kick the Festival off with a bang on Wednesday 4 April from 9.30am – 1.30pm with free food, activities, classes and entertainment. Whether you want to chill out and enjoy some music, get
your groove on with some Brazilian drumming and dancing, challenge your friends to a game of tennis, be creative with cupcake decorating and the ‘Colours of Yesterday’ mural, or capture memories with your friends in a photobooth, there is something for everyone to enjoy. After the launch, there will be two weeks of free activities across the Penrith region, including lunch discounts, tech classes, exercise classes, movie mornings, and a selfie event. Make sure you pick up a copy of the Festival booklet, which lists all the activities and events during the Festival and beyond! You can grab a copy from local businesses and organisations, including Council offices, the Penrith Library and Penrith Regional Gallery & The Lewers Bequest. Join us at the Reimagine Ageing Festival kick-off on 4 April to get active, get creative and stay connected: penrithcity.nsw.gov. au/ReimagineAgeing2018. Reimagine Ageing is part of the NSW State Government’s Seniors Festival.

THE LAST WORD
April is here; and with it are plenty of festivities. Not only has Easter arrived and gone in the [blink] of an eye, this month we also take some time out to remember the courageous contribution and suffering of all those who have served and died at war. As we approach the end of the month, the school holidays will be in full swing! There are plenty of activities being held to keep the kids entertained, check out pages 2 and 4 for some ideas; or keep the kids busy at home with our 'Holiday' fun on page 11. On the subject of kids, I’m sure we’ve all had a stroppy 3 year old at one time or another; Narelle talks about setting boundaries and limits on page 8; a must read ahead of the holidays. Now, it's time to put your feet up, make a cuppa and enjoy 'Your Community News' "There is always, always something to be thankful for."
