FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www. glenmoreparkanglican.com.au. Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

Easter; the Hope we need It is well known that without hope, people are soon crushed and fall into despair. The Bible’s book of Hebrews describes hope as an “anchor for the soul, firm and secure”. This means that without hope we can drift and lose direction, often ending up making a ship wreck of our lives. But where do we find real hope? When we speak of hope, often we speak of a dream or a wish or a desire, a bit like crossing your fingers and toes and wishing for the best! “I hope I won’t get sick.” “I hope things will work out well.” “I hope the Panthers will do well in the footy!” Easter is a great time of year because it is the birth of real hope. The Apostle Peter in his first letter in the Bible describes it this way; “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice.” This is truly brilliant! At Easter, Christian people everywhere remember and celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, an amazing event in history which changes everything. Jesus’ resurrection is THE event which gives people hope – real hope, sure, certain hope, the hope of new life with God, the hope of forgiveness and joy and peace with God, and the hope of an eternity with God; heaven. This continues to be the experience of the hundreds of people who call Glenmore Park Anglican Church home. This is why we would love you to join us over Easter to discover “The Hope we Need.” (See the details below.) PS: Check out our April Holiday Kids Club, 9am – 12.30pm Monday 15th – Wednesday 17th April. Book at www.gpa.church/holiday or call the Church Office.

Mulgoa Woman of the Announced: Erin Johnson

Year

After the miscarriage of her daughter, Ava Grace, in March 2015 following the diagnosis of the rare condition cystic hygroma, Erin Johnson began a journey to break the silence around miscarriage, stillbirth and infant loss. At a time when mothers would be caring for their new baby, Erin Johnson, of Glenmore Park, sat at her sewing machine and began to sew clothes for other stillborn babies at Nepean Hospital. What began as donating 3cm nappies for babies born at 12 weeks, soon became a massive volunteer effort which has seen clothes donated to hospitals across Australia, as well as hospitals overseas. Erin Johnson reflected on how she came to start the group “Ava Grace, No Footprint Too Small” upon receiving the Mulgoa Woman of the Year award. “I started the volunteer group soon after Ava was born as a way of giving back and working through my grief” Erin Johnson said. “I was sitting at a sewing machine trying my best to sew simple blankets and nappies for other parents who would walk the same path that we were now walking”. “I treasured the items that amazing charities and volunteers had given to Nepean Hospital to pass on to us so that our daughter would have something to wear and something that we could hold in our hands when she was gone”. Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies, who has herself experienced pregnancy loss, was inspired by Erin turning her grief into a story of hope and healing for other parents. “At a time when Erin was mourning the loss of her own baby, she showed a heart of compassion in supporting other families who were going through the same journey” Tanya Davies said. “Many of us remain silent as we grieve, but Erin turned her grief into good, providing clothing to give dignity to these children and create a community where other women can share their story”. Tanya Davies presented Erin Johnson with the Mulgoa Woman of the Year, alongside her husband, Mat, friend and dedicated volunteer, Natasha, and the midwives of Nepean Hospital. Antenatal and Gynaecology Nurse Unit Manager, Shirley Hammond has built a team of midwives to care for bereaved parents in a way that provides dignity and honour to their child and commended Erin and her team in helping them provide clothes for stillborn babies. “Erin and her team have provided our patients with some lasting memories for their precious angel babies” Shirley Hammond said. “My staff and I truly appreciate what they do to support us and our patients on this very hard journey. We are honoured to celebrate with her this well-deserved award”. The NSW Women of the Year Awards program recognises remarkable women across the state who have achieved inspiring results in their careers, in business or in their communities. FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Cnr. Factory Rd & Loftus St, Regentville from Christmas Day

Filling Empty Spaces When we built our home in Glenmore Park, we planted a tree. It’s fragrant white blossoms and beautiful light green leaves provided shade and became part of our lives as our five children arrived. The sweltering days over this hot summer caused the tree to struggle. It sent out roots across the lawn in search of water, and before we could pick up on what was happening the tree died. I chopped it down, and in its place now is an empty space – not just an empty physical space but a feeling something is missing and needs to be filled. In the same way most people I meet feel that something is missing from their soul and needs to be filled. We are all hungry for something more. We try to fill it with this or that but soon, after the lift we feel from some sort of achievement or our kids doing well at something, we are left again with a feeling that something is missing and still needs to be filled. The Bible teaches that only God can fill that empty space in our souls. It is when we accept Jesus as our Lord and Saviour and Leader that God enters our lives, filling the empty space with his love. We are about to search for a replacement tree to fill the empty space in our yard because we know that nothing else will replace what is missing. If you feel something is missing from your soul, I encourage you to invite Jesus into your life and let God fill the void with his love. When it comes to our souls nothing else can fill the empty spaces in a lasting way.

Are you a Mum in Business? The Penrith and Blue Mountains Mums In Business Association (MIBA) Networking Group held their first meeting in Glenmore Park for the year last month. The business networking group was well attended, with many local businesswomen coming together to show their support. “The Penrith and Blue Mountains MIBA Networking Group meets once a month on a Tuesday from 10:00am to 12:00pm and we currently have held our meetings at Daily Break in Glenmore Park, which is owned and managed by a member of our group, Susan Keith. I became the Event Coordinator for this area in November 2018 and the meetings have grown since our first meeting in December. At our recent meeting in March, we had 24 attendees which has been our biggest meeting yet” said Kylie King, Event Coordinator of Mums In Business Association (MIBA) – Penrith and Blue Mountains. During their recent meeting, attendees listened to a guest speaker who spoke and gave advice, hints and tips to the members on how to personally and professionally develop themselves and their businesses. They also networked with each other and shared their successes and ‘faceplants’ in a supportive and encouraging environment that was child-friendly. All ladies are invited to come along, whether they are mums, mums to fur babies or don’t have kids at all. “My future plans are to continue to grow the group and encourage more people to come along and attend. The Penrith-Blue Mountains is such a large area, so it would be good to hold multiple meetings in a month and encourage more ladies to jump outside their comfort zone and come along. One woman is strong but get 400 local ladies and 38,000 ladies online internationally together supporting her and each other and its truly incredible” explained Kylie. “It can be overwhelming juggling a business, family life and for some ladies a fulltime/part-time/casual job as well. It’s a fantastic opportunity to meet up with other ladies in similar situations who understand the mumpreneur life. MIBA’s networking events for the Penrith and Blue Mountains area are all about ensuring our attendees are leaving inspired, motivated and empowered to grow their businesses and can collaborate with the connections they have made through networking” she ended. Dee’s Dream

Daylight Savings Ends 2:00 am Sunday, 7 April 2019 All times are in Eastern Australia time

Where Every Child Matters Since the Glenmore Park Dog Park opened recently, the community have embraced the open space to bring their beloved pooches to run around, play and socialise with other furry friends. The popular facility began as a vision from local resident Dee Kerr, who lobbied for years to make the dream a reality. “The idea to have a dog park in Glenmore Park began about 4 years ago. I started my own Facebook page to reach out to the local community for people’s opinions. I also approached the parks section of Penrith City Council as well as people like John Thain, Emma Husar, Sue Day, Karen McKeown and Andrew Robinson” explained Dee about her campaign. Dee has since visited the Glenmore Park Dog Park, located on Saddler Way, and was proud to watch the project come to life. “It felt very surreal that my hard work had finally paid off and I cried with joy when the dog park opened. It’s great to see that there are separate sections for both large and small dogs as well as parking for cars, making it a nice place for all to enjoy” Dee told the Glenmore Gazette. “All dogs need a safe place to run around and enjoy, instead of being locked away in their backyards 24/7. This gives them great socialisation and brings the community together as a whole in a local environment” she continued. Thank you, Dee, and to the local community who got behind to support the Glenmore Park Dog Park to make it happen. “The community spirit is what I have enjoyed most about living here. Everyone helps each other out” ended Dee. U Dee Kerr and her dog Russ the Jack Russell | Image Supplied

PARENTS CORNER

Guest article by Professor Matt Sanders

Single Parenting Single parents often say they feel it’s more difficult to discipline a child without a partner’s support. But it’s very important to approach discipline in exactly the same way as if you were parenting with someone else. It’s vital to have a game plan and be consistent. That means setting house rules that don’t fluctuate. It may surprise some people to know that children like boundaries. Kids very easily become comfortable with the familiarity of a routine at bedtime, at mealtimes or when it’s time to get out of the house in the morning. Positive and predictable routines mean discipline will become much easier. Life won’t have to be full of big battles over little issues! Another worry many single parents express is the lack of a significant male or female influence in the household. Mothers may feel this more keenly when they’re raising a son alone, as many fathers do when they’re raising a daughter. It’s always important to encourage your child to have role models and mentors. Role models can show children how to behave, and what is the appropriate thing to do. So, single parents may want to look for opportunities for their children to get to know and have other men or women in their life. It could be a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a trusted family friend or a sports coach. Having someone who will serve a mentoring role throughout the child’s life can be a great example to – and support for – the child. Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. For more information go to www.triplep-parenting. net or http://www.resourcingparents.nsw.gov.au/. If you are looking for a computer-based course, Triple P Online is available for the cost of $80, the link is https://www.triplep-parenting.uk.net/uk-en/ find-help/triple-p-online/?cdsid=bn1kpaf0u26mvdum7q6n7up254

School Holiday Struggles As the school holidays are fast approaching, parents are considering what options they have regarding care and entertainment for their children during the two weeks they are not at school. For many families, the option to take leave from work is not a viable one and they are left to find appropriate options that are suitable for their family’s circumstance. Families with one or both parents at home may struggle with affording entertainment options for their children and will be on the hunt for free or lowcost ideas of things to do with their children. Some families with the financial means and physical ability to be around during the holidays may be considering alternative ways to entertain their children. Whichever situation your family is in, there is a solution and the answer is: playdates. A playdate is simply an organised time for two or more children to spend time with one another. They may happen at someone’s home or at a public area such as a park or play centre. If a playdate is one-to-one, it can strengthen friendships and establish strong bonds outside of the school environment. The best part is that there is no age limit. Playdates might seem like a simplistic answer to the woes of school holiday struggles, but they can certainly meet the needs of all families if you bind together to create the ‘village’ often talked about in parenting. Social interaction in a variety of settings is vital in developing a child’s sense of belonging, enhances communication and enables for character development. By allowing your children to visit a friend’s house, they gain additional insight into the world around them and learn to cooperate. So, parents if you have the means to invite your child’s friend over for a playdate these holidays, do it! Not only will your children have the chance to play with peers they like to spend time with, it will aid them in becoming more independent and confident as they mature. GAME REVIEW

.....

Pokémon Pokken Tournament DX

Pokémon Pokken Tournament DX is a game that begins with 23 characters, where each of them are unique in their own way. In this Pokémon game, there are 9 different game modes. There is one that is a standout, and that is battle mode. You firstly choose 1 of the 23 Pokémon and then you choose backup Pokémon. There are Pokémon that help you during battle, in case you are losing, and they will hurt your opponent so you can get time to plan your next move. After that, you choose your arena that you will battle in and there are 20 different ones. You will then have a fight until you beat your other Pokémon, where you can do special combos or quick attacks. There are a wide range of attacks you can do, and my favourite is the special attack. It is a very cool move and is very effective to use on your opponents. It is a first to 3 battle, so when you win 3 times you completely win! I recommend this game to anyone over the age of 9 years and rate it 6.5/10 (only available on Nintendo Switch).

New Performing Arts and Learning Centre at Glenmore Park High School

Hundreds of Glenmore Park families will benefit from the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government’s record investment in education, with a major upgrade to deliver a new Performing Arts and Learning Centre at Glenmore Park High School announced. Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies said that planning will soon begin for the new facility to benefit the schools linked with the Glenmore Park Learning Alliance (GPLA) and the wider Glenmore Park community. Tanya Davies said she was thrilled to announce the project which has been the vision of the principal and local school community for a number of years. “The Performing Arts Centre will not only support students of Glenmore Park High School, it will also be a shared facility available to other local schools across the region and a place for all the community of Glenmore Park to use and enjoy” Tanya Davies said.

“Only the NSW Liberals and Nationals Government can be trusted to ensure that new and upgraded local schools and improved facilities are delivered for NSW families”. Glenmore Park High School P&C President, Rebecca Marshall has been advocating for a Performing Arts Centre for the Glenmore Park community for a number of years. “From the start, Tanya has supported our vision and we have been working closely to secure funding for this innovative project. We are thrilled with the announcement” Rebecca Marshall said. “We have created strong connections with our wider community, including 7 partner primary schools (GPLA), Western Sydney University (WSU), our local Aboriginal Education Group, Penrith high schools (PEA) and local businesses to develop and share this great facility with them”. “This performance arts and learning space will benefit all the students in our local schools as well as the community. A venue to showcase talent, to develop broader skills and to raise expectations and improve student learning outcomes and opportunities”. The new Performing Arts Centre at Glenmore Park High School will benefit the Glenmore Park Learning Alliance schools, including Regentville, Surveyors Creek, Glenmore Park, Wallacia, Mulgoa, Warragamba, and Luddenham Public Schools. Education Minister Rob Stokes said the project is another example of the NSW Government delivering the school resources local students and their families deserve. “We are building new and upgraded schools across NSW to strengthen our world-class education system, so our children are ready for the jobs of the future” Mr Stokes said. Annette’s Amazing Transformation

For many years, Glenmore Park resident Annette Weir was tired of being the spectator and sitting on the sideline, watching her life go by. The local mother and grandmother knew it was time to get her life back on track and to lead a healthy lifestyle. Losing just over 50kg, Annette is a new person. “The program that I used for my weight loss was a gut health program called Phatt (Putting Health At The Top). I lost over 50kg in 10 months and have been maintaining it on the program ever since. I was inspired to join the program because I was obviously very unhealthy, and I was restricted in what I could do in life. I found that I was sitting on the sideline watching my life go by and that I was missing out on doing so many things with my children and grandchildren. As each day passed, it was time lost, time that I would never get back. So, after watching the success of others on the program, I decided to join and enjoyed my own success” stated Annette. Since losing her weight, Annette’s general health is much better. She has been able to reduce and stop some medications that she was taking daily. Annette has returned to activities like riding horses, that she has not been able to do for over 30 years. “For the future, I look forward to being active and staying active. I look forward to being able to join in more activities with my children and grandchildren. Moreover, I look forward to never going back to the life I had when I was overweight and never again spending my days spectating as time passes by” she said. Annette now has a new-found confidence to go out in public. Since starting the program, she has more energy and no longer feels tired and lethargic all the time. This, she explains, has been the key change in her life. There have already been times where Annette has caught up with family she hasn’t seen for a while and they haven’t even recognised her! “My advice for people is not to sit on the fence any longer. You can be the person you want to be if you just take a chance! Don’t waste your days being unhappy and tired, set a goal and go for it. Don’t be the spectator, get in there and change your life. With Phatt on your side, it really is so easy to do. Between my husband, my daughters and myself, we have lost over 100kgs thanks to Phatt” Annette explained. If you would like Annette to help you on your journey, you can contact her at www.phattprogram.com.au/annette-weir/.

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

How does too much Paracetamol cause Liver toxicity? Paracetamol toxicity is the leading cause of acute liver failure in the Western world, including Australia, and New Zealand. So how exactly does it cause liver damage? Let’s take a look at what happens when you take a normal dose of paracetamol. The drug is rapidly absorbed from the stomach and small intestine into the blood stream (Farrell 2018). It’s transported from the blood into liver cells. Liver cells contain enzymes that pick up each paracetamol molecule and stick a sugar group or a sulphate group onto the side of the molecule. Paracetamol molecules with these added sugar or sulphate groups are no longer active as a pain killer, and are non-toxic and very water soluble allowing them to be passed back into the blood stream, transported to the kidneys & eliminated in the urine (See diagram). When a somewhat larger paracetamol dose is taken, the above two enzymes become overwhelmed. This forces the excess paracetamol molecules to overflow from the normal pathways. Paracetamol that overflows is converted in liver cells to a new and highly toxic & reactive molecule called ‘NAPQI’. But before NAPQI can do any damage another back up set of enzymes comes to the rescue taking every NAPQI and sticking a funny molecule called ‘glutathione’ onto it. This renders NAPQI harmless & water soluble, allowing elimination via the kidneys and urine. Emergency room Doctors actually give a compound called NAC to paracetamol overdose patients to help liver cells make glutathione to detoxify NAPQI. If a very large paracetamol dose is taken, or a relatively high dose over a prolonged period, liver cells end up running out of ‘glutathione’ molecules to detox NAPQI which means that this backstop detox pathway no longer works. This leaves a lot of highly toxic NAPQI inside liver cells to do damage and here’s where problems occur. When NAPQI is allowed to roam free inside liver cells it binds to liver cell proteins and stops many from working. In particular NAPQI binds to proteins in mitochondria – the energy producing organelles within your liver cells – that produce ‘most’ of the cell’s energy. When mitochondria stop working properly, they produce large amounts of free radicals which further damage cell proteins. Eventually the cell loses its ability to produce energy, and this leads to cell DNA breakdown, and finally the whole cell ‘explodes’ leaking toxic contents into the tissue spaces around it and into the blood stream. When this happens to ‘many cells’ at the same time doctors can measure increased

levels of liver enzymes in your blood. Thus, it is the excess NAPQI that leads to hepatocellular damage & death, and eventually to hepatic failure. Similar enzymatic reactions occur in organs other than the liver also, such as the kidney, and can contribute to some degree of organ dysfunction in other areas of the body. If you have ongoing chronic musculoskeletal pain, physical therapy such muscle elongation therapy can often help, so why not call us at the clinic to discuss your issues.

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

New Baby Boy for Theresa!! It’s a Boy! On Friday 1st March 2019, our veterinarian, Theresa gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Both mum and bub are doing well. We wish Theresa the best of luck through her journey of parenthood. We wish them best of luck through this special journey. We are all very excited for the new arrivals! We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027.

THE LAST WORD Did you survive the social-media meltdown last month? Thankfully, the Gazette powers on without the reliance of internet connectivity - you'll always find us and the details of local businesses aplenty neatly tucked away in your letterbox, the first week of the month. We're on the cusp of Easter, School Holidays and remembering those who served and died as Anzac Day approaches. Here at the District Gazette 'We Live. Love.Local'. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Go easy on yourself. Whatever you do today, let it be enough.'
