Local Team to be Proud Of The Glenmore Park FC Under 13’s Division 1 team recently participated in the 2018 Kanga Cup, the largest youth football tournament in the Southern Hemisphere, held annually in Canberra. The tournament provides players with a week’s worth of tough, competitive games and an opportunity for rapid developmental growth as young footballers. The boys competed in the Under 13 Male Plate competition, which mostly comprises of top Division 1 teams across the country. This year was their third successive year competing. They came into the tournament with little expectation, other than to develop further as players and together as a team. However, as more and more games turned into wins, you couldn’t blame them for believing that something special was on the cards. This included a huge 3-0 victory against last year’s Football NSW Champion of Champions, Forest Killarney FC and a very convincing 4 -1 semi-final victory over potential tournament favourites Kemps Creek United. Reaching the Grand Final was already a dream come true and suddenly they aspired to be crowned champions. Sadly, it wasn’t to be, and they went down 2018 Kanga Cup Grand Finalists Glenmore Park FC U13 – 1’s | Image Supplied. Article: Brett Stephens

Turning Losing into Winning
Need a Real Gardener? (one who prunes, weeds and feeds your garden, but can also mow?)
Glenmore Park’s Brett Smith was crowned the 2017 Biggest Loser on Network Ten’s television show last year, with the highest weight loss percentage after losing 21.6 kilograms. With his newly transformed body and outlook on life, the proud father is now setting his sights on helping people get their lives back by becoming a qualified personal trainer. “Going on The Biggest Loser: Transformed was a massive wake up call of how out of control my weight had gotten. Since retiring from my professional boxing career, I lost my way and winning The Biggest Loser has reconnected me with my love of training and fitness” said Brett. With fitness once again a part of Brett’s life and a renewed love of training, he is now helping people who were just like him, who may have lost their way and now want to regain their lives by losing weight and getting active. “Since becoming a Personal Trainer, I’ve now started Southpaw Athletic. I help men and women who want to change their lives by losing weight and feeling better, not only for themselves but for their family. They can get their mojo back and make life better” Smith beamed. The abundance of parks and an easy-going, local atmosphere in Glenmore Park is the perfect environment for Brett to help create a ‘healthy community feel’, where people with similar goals can come together to get their health back on track. He hopes to achieve this through boot camps, learn to box classes and personal training. Brett has this advice for anyone wanting to lose weight and look after their body, “The simplest thing I can tell you is a 2-step approach. Step 1, you need to move (walking is fine) but some sort of exercise is needed 3 times a week. The more you move, the more you lose. Step 2 is to eat fresh, healthy food. Try to eliminate processed food and soft drinks. Doing that will start you in the right direction”. For more information, you can contact him on Facebook (Southpaw Athletic by Brett Smith) and Instagram (@southpaw athletic).

Toll Relief: Free Rego for Mulgoa Motorists Toll road users across Western Sydney will benefit from free vehicle registration under the NSW Government’s Toll Relief program which commenced on 1 July. Tanya Davies MP, Member for Mulgoa welcomed the announcement from Premier Gladys Berejiklian which will save eligible motorists between $423 and $729 a year on registration costs. Tanya Davies said toll road users will be eligible for free vehicle registration if they spend more than $25 a week on average, or $1300 over a 12-month period. “The cost of living is a pressure faced by many families and individuals in Western Sydney and that is why this Government is committed to relieving financial pressures wherever possible” Tanya Davies said. “The latest Census showed that 78.7% of people in the Mulgoa electorate commute to work by car each day. That is 14% higher than the rest of NSW”. “There is no doubt that many people in Mulgoa will save money through Toll Relief, with Glenmore Park and St Clair residents in the top 10 suburbs most likely to benefit”. “Toll Relief delivers a fair go for the many drivers across Mulgoa who are regular users of toll roads and is another example of the NSW Government putting money back in your pocket”. The scheme will apply to private drivers who use existing toll roads and will apply to any new toll roads in the future. The scheme is backdated, so eligible motorists will enjoy free vehicle registration if they spent more than $25 a week from 1 July 2017 up to 30 June 2018. The program is one of many NSW Government initiatives helping to ease cost of living pressures for households including through the Fuel Check app, cheaper hospital car parking, Active Kids vouchers and CTP refunds. Lions Raise ‘DonateLife’
Awareness
of
The Lions Club of Emu Plains are raising community awareness and understanding of organ and tissue donation, to encourage registrations on the Australian Organ Donor Register. This was highlighted during DonateLife Week recently. Today around 1,400 Australians and their families are desperately waiting for the call that a life-saving organ has become available. They are counting on the generosity of a donor and their family willing to give the gift of life. The gift of organ and tissue donation gives recipients a second chance at experiencing all the love, joy and adventure that life has to offer. Thousands of Australians are living their lives to the fullest because of the generosity of organ and tissue donors and their families. It is an especially heartfelt message that Emu Lion Jim Devine relates; “My granddaughter Kyla, who lives locally in Glenmore Park, had a liver transplant at 5 months old. She’s now 10 years old, playing netball, doing gymnastics and swimming and going to the Australian Transplant Games at the Gold Coast in October. All this was only possible because of a selfless decision of a donor and their family, to donate an organ”. Lions encourage all Australians in their community to register to become an organ or tissue donor or spark positive change by talking about donation and sharing views with family and friends. You can no longer register your donation decision via your driver’s licence, as you need to join the national Australian Organ Donor Register at https://register.donatelife.gov.au/ decide. Registering to be a donor directly influences consent rates, with 90 per cent of families agreeing to donation proceeding when their loved one is registered. This drops to 40 per cent when the family is unaware of their loved one’s donation decision. Knowing what their loved one wanted brings comfort to families at a very difficult time.

Isabel is Living the Dream
She may only be 19 years old, but Isabel Vella is already proving that it’s possible to achieve your dreams early with the talented local opening her first hairdressing salon, The Cabello Room, in Penrith last month. The ambitious Glenmore Park resident had previously worked at Captive Hair Studio for the past three years, learning as much as she could, before taking over the ownership of the flourishing salon. “Growing up, I have always had a business ambition. I knew that once I started hairdressing that I wanted to take over the salon I was working at and make it my own” said Isabel to the Glenmore Gazette. The Cabello Room is a salon that specialises in hairdressing, colouring, styling, cutting and extensions. The popular business has recently undergone a makeover, to give it Isabel’s own personal touch. She also currently employs 5 staff members
from the local area. After a successful Launch Party, Isabel and her staff are ready to go and finish the year on a high. “It was quite hectic with the massive renovations, but I am most excited for my clientele to feel at home in our brand-new salon. I want to achieve a prestige salon reputation and create an individual experience for each client. Our goal is to help them achieve what they desire the best way possible in every way” explained Isabel. The Cabello Room is located at Shop 1, 20-22 Woodriff Street in Penrith. Their contact phone number is 4731 3036. They are open 9:00am to 4:00pm on Tuesdays, 9:00am to 9:00pm on Wednesdays, 9:00am to 5:00pm on Thursdays, 9:00am to 5:30pm on Fridays, 8:00am to 4:00pm on Saturdays and closed on Sundays and Mondays. Words Matter “Where did we ever get the crazy idea that in order to make children do better, first we have to make them feel worse? Think of the last time you felt humiliated or treated unfairly. Did you feel like cooperating or doing better?” questions Jane Nelsen (Founder of Positive Discipline Program) . Some people think that screaming at children, putting them down, and calling them names, toughens them up. It’s a tough world out there, and we just gotta make them tougher. Phooey! The research is very clear. Treating kids poorly can lead to mental health problems. Do you know that 1 in 4 of the young people in Australia will develop clinical depression? Yep, in this ‘lucky country’. I have worked with kids as young as 8 years of age who have had depression. Mental illness is a road going to a whole lot of suffering and heartache. Not only for the young person, but his/her parents, friends, school, and community. I see a lot of this ‘toughen them up’ approach on the sporting field. Parents and coaches screaming at kids, calling them ‘losers’ and ‘rubbish’. Silly me, I thought kids wanted to play sport to be active, to socialise, and to build their self-esteem, not to be bullied and abused. Frequently, quite vulnerable children do a sport in the community to build their resilience. Most sports have a code of ethics for administrators, coaches, and spectators, which have strict guidelines which emphasise that the game should be enjoyable, children should be treated fairly and respectfully, and the duty of care required. Remaining silent about a sports coach who swears at and yells at and degrades your child is certainly the easy way out, but this is how adults get away with child abuse. Emotional and verbal abuse desensitises your child to abuse. Would you accept a teacher, neighbour, or pastor/youth leader screaming at your kid and putting him/her down? If the answer is ‘no’ then don’t accept it on the sports field. Words matter. So does your child’s wellbeing. As the old saying goes “winning isn’t everything”. A local basketball club has the right attitude. They prominently display a sign saying… “Please remember • These are children • It’s just a game • It is not the NBL.”

Old Toys New Cash Forget the lemonade stand in the front yard, the next generation of entrepreneurial youngsters is turning their unwanted toys into cash at My Kids Market NSW. “This year we have seen an increase in the number of kids hosting stalls with their parents to make some money to buy a prized toy or experience” said Jennifer Harrison, Market Organiser, My Kids Market NSW. Just recently we saw Alec and his Mum on a mission to sell his unwanted toys and books to make way for his long-awaited Xbox One! “The markets have always been a great way for mums and dads to clear out unwanted baby and kid’s items from the house and make some extra cash for the family”. Sydney mum Leanne Lewis is one such parent. “My 8-year-old has been wanting an Xbox One for some time. We’ve resisted and decided that if he wanted it, he’d have to earn it. Selling all of his old toys was the way to go”. Leanne said “The benefit of the market stall was far greater than the cash 8-year-old Alec made to purchase his prized Xbox One. This was such a valuable learning exercise for my son. He got to work for something that he wanted, the value of working for his money, sorting through his old toys and honestly saying that he no longer wanted them, also pricing the toys, which proved to be hilarious fun!” Are your kids dreaming of something new? To help them on their mission, My Kids Market NSW are giving them a special $10 CASHBACK from their stall fee on Market Day! To be eligible, BOOK A STALL at their Penrith Market online and type the words GAZETTE CASHBACK in the notes when you make your booking, then email them at info@mykidsmarketnsw. com.au, confirming your booking with a photo of the kids cleaning out their unwanted treasures. Stalls at the market are only $59, the event is held indoors, and they provide the table. Here are their top five decluttering tips to help get you and the kids started: 1. Start your declutter in the morning rather than the afternoon. You need the kids to be on board with the idea and not grumpy or tired. Plan a fun activity for the afternoon as a reward. 2. When starting your toy cupboard clear out, create four piles – keep, sell, donate and throw. At the end of most of our markets we have a local charity, such as Mummies Paying It Forward, come to collect any items stallholders don’t want to take home so you can kill two birds with one stone. 3. A visible goal will help keep their eyes on the prize! Stick a picture on the wall of whatever it is the kids are planning to do with the money they make from selling their toys. 4. When it is time to pack away the toys the kids have decided to keep, if there are any that you don’t think the kids will play with again, put them in a separate box and store it out of reach. If the kids ask for a toy in the box you can get it down, otherwise after a few months you can suggest that these are also toys that they no longer need as they didn’t even realise they were missing. 5. Encourage the kids to identify unwanted toys on an ongoing basis. Keep a box in the laundry or garage and anytime they decide that they have outgrown a toy they can pop it in the box for their next market stall. It will make the decluttering process much simpler next time.

School Struggles Is your child having difficulty learning at school? Perhaps they try to avoid going or misbehave in class because they can’t do the work. When a child is struggling, it can impact the whole family. Firstly, please know you and your child are not alone. Secondly, there are ways you can manage and improve the situation. It is important to grasp an understanding of which areas your child is experiencing difficulty. Children struggle academically for numerous reasons, so it is imperative to pinpoint the exact cause as the road to take is dependent on the root cause. This process may be lengthy, but it is best to cover all bases. The first port of call is your child’s school and often a report card will give a good indication of the areas that need addressing. Unfortunately, this information may give you the deficits but not explain the ‘why’. Attending the parent-teacher interviews and asking for more specific information will help guide your course of action. Often, teachers will refer students to the school learning support team for individual programs and integrated assistance in the classroom. In some cases, schools may recommend you take your child to see a specialist. Do not worry if your child’s teacher suggests this, it is useful to partake in assessments and appointments to exclude specific behavioural disorders, learning disabilities or impairments that are the underlying reason for issues at school. It may be appropriate to visit with speech therapists, occupational therapists, paediatricians, tutors, psychologists, audiologists and/or optometrists – depending on the recommendation of the school or the areas that require further investigation. This extensive list may seem overwhelming, but it is not intended as a mandatory list of what to do but rather a
recommendation of where to go to get further assistance. These services will often suggest ways you can support your child’s learning at home, ways the school can adjust learning to cater for your child’s individual needs and equip you with knowledge and tools to be an advocate for your child’s learning based on the information they obtain. With a significant understanding and appropriate strategies and services in place, your child has a greater chance of improvement and achieving his or her personal best.

A Love - Fate Relationship Most people have heard of the friend-zone and many who have experienced it know that once you’re in it, it is difficult to move in to a romantic relationship. Fortunately for Glenmore Park couple, Michael Collins and Marisa Rojo, they were able to take their relationship to the next level and have finally gotten engaged after over ten years of coming in and out of each other’s lives. Their love story started one Friday night in 2008 at the Penrith Ice Palace, where both happened to be hanging out with a group and they just seemed to hit it off instantly as friends. After a few months, Marisa asked Michael to accompany her to her school formal - as friends only as she enjoyed having a guy best friend to get a male perspective. It was on this night, however, that Michael realised he was in love with the stunning brunette as she descended the stairs in her black and white dress looking like a Hollywood movie star. Marisa says she knew she loved Michael a lot sooner but naively thought it was the type of love that two friends shared. The pair remained friends and went on with their lives, both having other partners and almost moving away from each other. But for some reason every couple of months they would pop back into each other’s lives one way or another. They did not actually go on their official first date until 2016 and even then, Marisa didn’t realise it was a date until afterwards. It was not until Michael attended Marisa’s cousin’s birthday celebration that she finally realised he was the one. “It was the first time Michael had met any of my family and he just blended. He was beaming with pride to be my boyfriend and he wasn’t afraid of all their questions. He knew he wanted to be with me, he wanted to be a part of my family” Marisa explained. Michael believes that fate kept bringing them together, a sentiment held by both their mothers who claim they both knew that in the end, Michael and Marisa would be together. Last month, the couple were staying in a cosy cabin in Bilpin enjoying a bottle of red and an antipasto platter by candlelight when Michael gallantly got down on one knee and asked Marisa if she would marry him – to which the answer was, “Yes, a million times, yes!”. The newlyengaged couple plan to get married in Autumn 2020, preferably on a golf course somewhere, and plan to start their own little family soon after.
Happy Birthday Nadia Wishing you all the joy in the world Have a great day! From your children, Alex and Jasmine

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269
Can NSAIDs Affect How Your Other Pain Killers Work? Some people with higher levels of pain may be taking multiple pain medications. As seen in my last article, longer term intake of NSAIDs can lead to the development of ‘tolerance’, which means the medication fails to reduce pain as well as it first did. Indeed, one animal experiment showed that the 7th dose of an NSAID is only 28% as effective as the first though blood concentrations of the drug remained the same. Development of tolerance, may lead to a patient increasing the frequency and/or dose of their pain medication. It may also see the patient seeking help from their primary care physician for stronger opioid based medications. And occasionally patients may be prescribed both. A recent patient with considerable lower back pain, detailed their current pain medication regimen as follows: 1. Opioids: a. Oxycontin (Oxycodone) -20mg twice daily, b. Plexia (Tapendadol) SRMR - 50mg once daily, c. Endone (Oxycondone) - 5mg as required 2. NSAIDs: a. Mobic (Meloxicam) - 15mg once daily 3. Panadol osteo (paracetamol) - 665mg once daily 4. Normison (Temazepam) - 10mg nightly, to allow sleep & deal with the anxiety of continual pain The patient had been on these medications for some months, yet was still in considerable pain. Patients taking longer term pain medications may want to know that: 1. NSAIDs enter the brain-stem from the blood & stop
transmission of pain from the body. Opioids do the same Tolerance to NSAIDs & opioids occurs rapidly Opioids and NSAIDs act on the same brain-stem pathway to block pain transmission 4. Initially NSAIDs & opioids, work together to kill pain more efficiently, however 5. NSAIDs & opioids when taken together for more than a few days, quickly create ‘cross-tolerance’. That is, the NSAID stops the opioid from working properly & vice versa, so neither drug works well 6. Increasing opioid dosage long-term may lead to a wellknown phenomenon called ‘opiod-induced hyperalgesia’. Here intake of the opioid pain killer may actually increase the original pain or may cause completely new pains unrelated to the original pain. Careful withdrawal from the drug may be required to reduce pain It’s pretty clear - short term NSAIDs & other pain medication are fine and effective for pain, however efficacy of longer term use is questionable & effects are complex. Patients should talk to their physicians. The Tasmanian government deprescribing guide recommends intermittent use, or cessation of NSAID if symptoms are controlled & stable. They advocate maximal use of nonpharmacological treatments such as massage, physiotherapy, exercise & heat packs. Finding & treating the root cause of pain is probably the best idea. If you’re suffering chronic pain why not give us a call at the clinic. 2. 3.

FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School | Christmas Service: 9am @ Regentville Public School
Moving Beyond Money-Making “Money makes our world go ‘round.” Who doesn’t need a bit more cash for school fees, electricity bills, or to pay for a holiday? The problem is that money-making can become the sum-total of our life – we spend too many hours doing it and as a result must compromise on other things that would make our soul come alive. When we don’t have enough time to rest or to experience beauty our soul suffers. When money-making takes over, many marriages break up. Couples are so busy making money and pursuing careers that they end up with little quality time with each other and fall out of love. They often end up quite wealthy, but as the Beatles taught us: “Can’t buy me love.” When making money becomes our whole universe we can make dodgy decisions that compromise our consciences – not criminal behaviour perhaps but just being unscrupulously selfish in a way that hurts and takes from others. We might try to rationalise shady
dealings or make up for them by trying to do good, but eventually it can be like sludge on our souls the more our consciences are compromised. Money-making can distract us from our gifts and doing things that make our world a better place. Hedy Lamarr achieved international fame as a Hollywood film star in the 1940’s. MGM described her as “the most beautiful woman in the world”. But in her spare time Lamarr loved to invent things. She invented a secret communication system which used “frequency hopping” to guide radio-controlled missiles underwater in a way that was undetectable by the enemy in World War II. This technology is used in modern wireless technology today, including Wifi. The wisdom Jesus taught is there is more to life than money. Jesus also taught that it’s hard to find God if money is our main focus. Again, we need moolah but if it distracts us from what matters in life, we can lose things that money can’t buy. Life’s too short.
FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.
Weighing the Evidence Sadly, some people today dismiss claims about Jesus or the Bible because they think “there is no evidence” for either. Yet, this is strange, because any serious investigation of the evidence reveals overwhelming support for the reliability of the claims about Jesus and the reliability of the Bible. People who decide to follow Jesus don’t leave their brains at the door. We carefully weigh the evidence, recognise its reliability, then decide to commit our lives to Jesus. In June, my wife and I were privileged to fly to Israel for a conference of over 2000 Anglican Church leaders from more than 50 countries. Not only was the conference extraordinarily encouraging, but we were also able to tour Israel, visiting many of the places spoken about in the Bible. It was a truly memorable experience! Seeing places spoken about in the Bible. Walking where Jesus walked. It was a brilliant confirmation of the Bible. For example, the gospel of Luke starts with Luke telling us “Many
have undertaken to draw up an account of the things fulfilled among us, just as they were handed down to us by those who from the first were eyewitnesses and servants of the word. Therefore, since I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, it seemed good also to me to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught.” Luke carefully investigated the evidence then wrote an orderly account of the events surrounding Jesus. This truth fills the many people who call Glenmore Park Anglican Church home, with joy and confidence. We are not misled. We’re not believing fairy tales but are following Jesus, a real person in history who did wonderful things to bring each one of us back into friendship with God. You too can join us on Sundays or throughout the week to experience this life transforming truth for yourself.

As I write this, I can't help but think that the countdown is now on. While I enjoy winter immensely, there's always a point where Winter has worn out it's welcome... and if you're anything like me... that's about now! The countdown to Spring is just around the corner! Just think, warm days, the sun is shining, the flowers are beginning to blossom, the grass is returning to it's lush state... ahhhh, I can almost 'smell it'. This month we have a brilliant 'coupon feature' where your favourite local businesses have put forward some pretty attractive offers, jump on these great savings and show them your support! It's simple, but true "We rise by lifting others". For now, curl up under the blankie in the warmth of the heater, and enjoy your Community News.
