FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www. glenmoreparkanglican.com.au. Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

God’s Megaphone Well known author C.S. Lewis, creator of the Narnia series, did more than write children’s books, he also wrestled with the big issues of suffering and disappointment. Lewis himself experienced pain as he watched his cherished wife die of cancer. This caused him much grief, but he was able to persevere because he never lost his confidence in God. One of his best known quotes was; “Pain insists upon being attended to. God whispers in our pleasures, speaks to us in our conscience, and shouts to us in our pain. It is his megaphone to rouse a deaf world.” Lewis was explaining that pain is God in his kindness, “shouting” to us that things are not right; the pain we suffer is the consequence of a world gone wrong. Pain and hardship was never God’s plan, but the consequence of a world out of step with God, the result of the fact that each of us has turned our back on the God who loves us, who wants the best for us. Pain is God’s megaphone rousing us to come back him, calling us to Jesus, to follow him, even drawing strength from him in tough times. The Apostle Paul in the Bible’s book of Romans speaks of our world being subject to the “bondage to decay...groaning as in the pains of childbirth.” Paul says how we too “groan inwardly” as we experience this hardship. Paul says to his readers, the answer is not to put our hope in the things of this world which are passing away, but to put our confidence in Jesus, who will keep us with him for eternity. This confident hope, along with prayer to God will enable you to stand firm in all things. Throughout August in our Sunday Church services, as well as our regular weekly events, we’ll be focusing on God’s kindness, and the difference you can experience as you put your confidence in Jesus, knowing that he cares for you. We’d love to see you! Questions of Life The guy serving my chai latte said, sort of flippantly as we discussed his long working hours, “What does it all mean anyway, hey?” Life is at warp speed and we don’t often stop long enough to reflect on our lives. But when we do, we often come across important questions which our souls somehow need answers to. Finding the meaning of our life, or why it matters, is a key to finding joy. My barista’s question was more than a throw-away line – it reflected a deep question of life about whether there was more to it all than the work he was doing. His question was smart because answering it will impact on the wellbeing of his soul. Another smart, though harder, question of life is: What happens to us when we die? The Bible offers an answer that involves Jesus Christ. This triggers other questions such as: Is God real? Who is Jesus anyway? and Can he really help us or heal us? The questions of life naturally move towards questions of faith because the answers are beyond life-as-usual. Perhaps you have thought they are too big to answer? But I assure you that the Bible offers clear answers to the big questions of life. A friend asked me this: How do I know if I am doing the right thing with my life? After being touched by a documentary he watched on TV he was anxious to make the most of the rest of his life. You may have other questions of life that niggle at your soul. Finding answers can free up our lives again by addressing our fears, restoring our peace, and releasing joy. If you are seeking answers to questions of life, consider the Alpha Course (details are on this page).

New Era for the Regentville Knights Like most brigades, Regentville Rural Fire Brigade had its humble beginnings. Formed in 1951 by a group of local residents and landholders, the brigade began with a borrowed trailer and little else. Relocating in the 1970s from their original tin shed to the current station (which was then a two-bay brick box) the place is now unrecognisable. Through member’s blood, sweat and tears, and support of the local community through fund raising, the station is now a fine facility with a meeting/training room, office, three engine bays, huge carport and an outside area that includes the obligatory barbecue. Their current Brigade Equipment includes two bushfire tankers, an urban pumper, a personnel carrier and a fire boat. But it’s not the equipment that makes their Brigade, it’s the over 40 volunteers that are on call 24/7, 365 days a year, who commit their precious time and energy to providing the local community with world class emergency services. Services that include responding to bush and structure fires, motor vehicle accidents, and storm and flood damage. They also assist the community through their Community Education and bush fire mitigation programs. Recently, Regentville Rural Fire Brigade unveiled its new logo. Keeping much of the original in a new format, they have below given some history behind the logo and what it means to the local community. The Logo of Regentville Rural Fire Brigade represents the History of Regentville from 1823 when the then Landowner of the area, Sir John Jamison, named his Estate “Regentville” for the Prince Regent (Later King George IV) who knighted him a Knight Bachelor. Sir John Jamison inherited 1,000 acres of land in what is now the Penrith area, following his father’s death in 1811. The land was taken up by Sir John, who had been a surgeon, and had served under Admiral Horatio Nelson at the Battle of Trafalgar in 1805 and the Battle of San Domingo in 1806. It was due to his outstanding Naval service as a Surgeon that he was knighted for his medical services to the Royal Navy. This wasn’t the first time he’d been knighted though, in 1807 the Swedish King made Sir John a Knight of the Order of Gustavus Vasa (KGV) for successfully treating an outbreak of Scurvy in the allied Swedish fleet. In 1823-24, he built a magnificent mansion on a rise overlooking the Nepean River. He named the mansion Regentville House. Sir John held so many lavish balls, banquets and other social activities at the mansion that he became known as the “hospitable knight of Regentville”. This is how the “Regentville Knights” got their name. Early Brigade logos have depicted the Knights helmet to represent the Knighted Sir John Jamison, and an Anchor to represent his Naval Service. Today the Logo still incorporates the Knight and anchor, but also includes further details. The serpent (traditionally seen on the Rod of Asclepius) wrapped around the anchor in acknowledgement of Sir John’s achievements in medicine, particularly in Naval Service. The motto “Sine Metu” which is from the Jamison family crest and translates to “Without Fear” and the Flaming sword which relates to the duties of Today’s Regentville Knights, fighting flames. Regentville is always looking for committed locals to assist with everyday emergencies! If this isn’t for you, at least head over to their Facebook to keep up to date with what they are doing in our community. Local Mums Taste Success Local businesswomen, Justine Milne and Sara Drebber know what it’s like to juggle a busy family, manage a household and run a successful business. The two talented Glenmore Park residents have recently been recognised as outstanding leaders in their respective fields at the 2019 Penrith Local Business Awards. Justine received the award, Outstanding Sole Trader for her business Justine Milne Marriage Celebrant, and Sara the Outstanding Education Service award for her business edUcatered. Both ladies are absolutely thrilled to be recognised for all their hard work and dedication in their chosen fields. Being a mum in business is certainly not without its challenges. Justine told the Glenmore Gazette, “There are never enough hours in the day, so time management is my biggest challenge. I’ve found being super organised and planning for every detail helps. We live on a schedule and it works for us - we all know what is happening and when. I’ve spoken to many busy local mums in business and got many tips about what they do, and it seems the key is organisation!” Sara agrees, “I am a super organised person, so we have everything in a calendar which is shared within our family. I am also fortunate to have the support of my husband and mum when it comes to getting the children to their various activities in the afternoon during the week when I am working. If I didn’t have these structures in place, we just wouldn’t function smoothly as a family. I make sure I schedule in quality time as a family and time to myself”. Funnily enough, Justine and Sara had never met before winning these awards despite both having so much in common – they have children of similar age attending the same school, both are managers of their sons’ local sport teams and both have been living in Glenmore Park for just over 12 years. Having young children and running a business, both ladies lead very busy and active lives but make time to enjoy the community we live in and look after themselves. Justine enjoys taking time-out for herself at the gym or doing a yoga class, whilst Sara enjoys having a quiet coffee at a local café whilst reading a book or meeting a friend. This is Justine’s fifth year in business and second award. A few months ago, she was named #1 Sydney Celebrant from the Bride’s Choice Awards and was also a finalist in the Local Business Awards in 2018 before taking home the winner’s trophy this year. For Sara, after only two years in business, this is her first award; she was a finalist in the 2018 Local Business Awards and a finalist in the 2019 Altitude Awards only a few months ago. Both women attribute their success to their commitment to their roles and passion for people and community. Justine and Sara are excited to see where the next chapter takes them and extend their thanks to those who put their trust in them by engaging their services. U Sara and Justine with their awards. PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com Escalation traps are one of the most common types of parent traps, and involve ‘child escalation’ and ‘parent escalation’. Child Escalation When children want something and don’t get it, they can learn that by escalating in their behaviour or emotions (hitting, crying, whining, nagging) they can get what they want. For example, a child wants a lolly in the supermarket. Although you say ‘no’ the child gets louder and more demanding, and you give in to avoid the fuss and judgement from other people in the store. What is your child learning from this? Parent Escalation When parents want something from their children they can escalate (nagging, shouting) to get the child to complete the task. For example, you want the child to switch off the computer and come to dinner. You ask several times and each time gets louder. You get to the point where you are screaming at your child, counting, or making threats and demands. This is where the parent says “my child never listens to me”. What is your child learning from this? Combination Of Parent And Child Escalation You can have a combination of child and parent escalation. The parent escalates in response to the child’s escalation, and fairly soon tempers are frayed, feelings are hurt, and nothing productive or helpful has been achieved. What are you and your child learning from this? Remedy? Give clear, calm instructions. Stay calm, and follow through, so that your child knows that when you say ‘no’ you mean ‘no’ and when you want something done it gets done within a reasonable time frame without a fuss. And as always, continue to build a strong relationship with your child based on love, nurture and trust, because the strength of the relationship determines how much your child will listen and respond to you. I am back to doing individual parenting work after several months away working in another program. If you are struggling with your parenting, it’s OK to ask for help (it’s free).

Penrith Kids are Active Kids

Stuart Ayres MP, Member for Penrith visited Dive In Swimming Academy to see firsthand how kids in Penrith are keeping active while their parents are keeping the cash, with each schoolenrolled child now able to access two $100 Active Kids vouchers. Stuart Ayres said one of the most popular programs for kids and parents has just been doubled to help kids stay active all year long. “We all know kids in Penrith want to play sport and keep active with their friends and now parents can encourage them even more with another voucher to help spread the costs associated with participation said Stuart Ayres. “Through the latest vouchers released last month, the most popular programs so far are swimming, dance and gymnastics. Keryn Daley, Co-owner of Dive In Swimming Academy said “The latest release of the Active Kids Rebate has been very successful with our centre receiving over 130 vouchers within the first few days. Treasurer Dominic Perrottet said since the Active Kids program was launched in 2018, more than one million vouchers have been redeemed and more than $100 million saved by NSW families. “Families across NSW keep telling me how much the Active Kids Vouchers help them manage the cost of living. Now with two per school enrolled child, parents keep even more money in their back pocket while their kids stay happy and healthy said Mr Perrottet. Parents of school-enrolled children can access a second $100 Active Kids voucher to use towards registration and membership fees for sport and active recreation each year. For further information, visit sport.nsw.gov.au/activekids or call 13 13 02.

New Martial Art for Glenmore Park A new martial art is about to arrive in Glenmore Park, and this one is designed to take the pressure down rather than ramp it up. Liu He Ba Fa is a beautiful combination of Tai Chi and Kung Fu, blending the flowing movements of Tai Chi with the more “martial” elements of Kung Fu. It is also known as Chinese Water Boxing, a name that reflects the quiet strength that is inherent in this art. Dave Adlam has been a martial artist for over 30 years and has run his own martial arts school in Glenmore Park for the last 18 years. Dave is a Master in Taekwondo and Haidong Gumdo (Korean Sword), but his most recent training in Liu He Ba Fa has fundamentally changed his approach to his martial arts practise. He has found that the gentle, controlled movements and the deep mindfulness of Liu He Ba Fa has provided both physical and mental benefits, and his students agree with him. Liu He Ba Fa uses meditative techniques to help calm and focus your mental state and uses gentle but strong movements to provide a whole-body workout that works with your body’s natural movements rather than against them. This allows people of all ages, and all levels of fitness to enjoy better emotional, mental and physical health without the risk of injury. Dave is looking forward to sharing this restorative and energising practise at Fernhill Public School on Tuesday evenings from 8:00pm to 9:00pm. Believe in Yourself! A few years ago, Glenmore Park’s Karen Jack was excited to launch her photography business. As part of showcasing her business, she applied to a professional photography membership association, where she submitted 10 photographs that would be judged. “Feeling nervous but thrilled, I was knocked down and crushed a few weeks later to read ‘Learn photography!’ on a few of my images and nothing else. I went through a multitude of emotions. I wanted to put my camera in the cupboard. There were professional photographers who put doubt in my head that I wasn’t capable or skilled. “I came to the determined conclusion that these comments will not stop me from following my passion” said Karen. Since that day, Karen has balanced the work-life struggles as a mum and achieved success with her photography business, claiming two international portrait awards! “In life we face many hurdles. One thing I’ll say is if you believe in something strongly, don’t let somebody knock you down. Stand up and say, ‘I can’ and ‘I will’. Don’t doubt your passion or worth” she said. Karen is now a portrait and headshot photographer for InTouch Photography.

New Local Photography Group Glenmore Park – Regentville Camera User’s (Photographers) Group was formed recently as a hub for local camera enthusiasts to come together and share their experiences. The group already boasts 74 members and looks to continue to grow. “The group was formed as a community effort to encourage interaction between local camera users, enthusiasts and casual camera users/photographers. Members can enjoy a great hobby by way of helping and encouraging each other through experiences, tips and photographic assistance on camera operations a step further than the mobile phone camera and using automatic settings. It’s also a place to share photos said group representative Ben Sharif. According to Ben, some of the popular local locations he likes to photograph include the wetland areas around Blue Hills and Glenmore Loch as well as Mulgoa Reserve for bird life. “We also venture outside into the broader Nepean area, Blue Mountains and Richmond. Travel photos, hobbies and sports and historical sites are of interest too added Ben. The group’s future plans are to encourage people of all skill levels to enjoy taking photos and for the photographic community to come closer and learn through experiences and knowledge. A mentorship program may also be introduced. Search ‘Glenmore Park – Regentville Camera User’s (Photographers) Group’ on Facebook for more details. U Blue Hills Wetlands | Image: Ben Sharif

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Why People who exercise may respond better to treatment (Part 1)! Working with so many patients over the years allows one a chance to observe different types of patients. One of the things this has highlighted for me is that more often than not people whose jobs involve exercise tend to have less painful muscles that respond sooner to remedial treatments than sedentary people. Sedentary people still respond, just less rapidly. Of course, exercise is one of many factors influencing response rate. Mental stress, or poor diet or drugs can alter tissue response rate, as can excessive-exercise or relative overexercise for people with poor fitness levels, all leading to poorer recovery. Nevertheless, sedentary people often respond a little more slowly. Why? One reason is tissue detox efficiency via lymphatics. Lymph vessels help remove tissue waste products via the liver & kidneys. However, they don’t have a heart to pump lymphatic fluid. Rather they rely on tiny muscles surrounding each lymph vessel which all contract in a coordinated way to pump lymph, and then on skeletal-muscle contractions from exercise to superboosts lymph flow. Being sedentary (low muscular activity) much reduces flow.

For example, at rest, 2/3 of leg lymph-flow comes from smooth-muscles lining lymph vessels, just 1/3 comes from incidental leg-muscle contractions. Studies show that a person when: 1. asleep, has very low ankle lymph flow, just 0.24 ml/hour. 2. standing increases ankle lymph flow 13 times. 3. fast walking, increases ankle lymph flow 15 times Contracting skeletal muscles (exercises) support tissue cleansing by pumping toxin laden lymph, newly made by tissue cells, along the lymphatic vessels and away from the tissues. People who don’t exercise regularly still produce a reasonable amount of metabolic tissue waste but don’t have the benefit of the wonderful flushing effects that continual muscle contraction and relaxation provides. So, their tissues tend to have much poorer waste & toxin removal. Many of these waste products irritate muscle and its nerve cells producing pain signals, sometimes even to light touch. This should make it easy to see why muscles with reduced daily waste & toxin removal may feel much more painful and have more trouble healing.

New Online System Takes Stress Out of Finding a JP An online Justice of the Peace register has been upgraded to make it easier for people to find a JP when they need one. “There are over 95,000 JPs covering all corners of the state – yet tracking one down in urgent situations can be challenging” said Attorney General Mark Speakman. “The revamped register will solve this problem by enabling JPs to include the dates and times they’re available, in addition to their contact details. “For JPs, it will mean fewer unwanted disruptions, while people who need a document witnessed or certified quickly will no longer have to waste time calling JPs – only to discover they’re on holidays or busy”. The improved register also assists culturally and linguistically diverse communities, by enabling people to search for a local JP who speaks a particular language. The new-look register began operating in early 2019. JPs act as independent and objective witnesses to documents people need for a variety of purposes. Their main functions are to witness affidavits and statutory declarations, and they may also certify copies of original documents. JPs provide their services on a voluntary basis. Since the commemorative certificates were introduced in 2012, 2979 Justices of the Peace have been recognised for 50 years of service. For more information on JPs or to find one in your area, go to www.jp.nsw.gov.au. U Article: Department of Justice – NSW Government. It’s now easier to find a JP | Image: www.pexels.com
