FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www. glenmoreparkanglican.com.au. Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.
Celebrate Jesus
At its heart Christmas is a celebration. But a celebration of what? We say, “Happy Christmas.” We sing, “Joy to the world”, but why should we be happy? What joy is there? At Christmas we remember the words of an angel to a startled bunch of shepherds on that first Christmas morning recorded for us in the Bible’s book of Luke; “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all people. Today in the town of David a Saviour has been to you; he is Christ the Lord.” Luke’s account of Jesus’ birth reveals two important things. First, Luke anchors this event firmly in history. It is terribly sad when people jump on the bandwagon of dismissing Jesus’ existence without checking the facts. In Luke’s account we see real people in a real place at a real time. In other words, if you were there 2000 years ago you would have been just as startled as the shepherds! Let me encourage you; carefully investigate the facts for yourself. Second, Luke reveals the necessity for Jesus’ coming. Luke tells us that Jesus came as a “Saviour.” The reality is that our lives are out of step with God. We see it in our world. We see it in the people around us. And if we’re honest, we see it in ourselves. The angel declares that Jesus has come to rescue us from the consequences of ignoring God and keeping him on the sidelines of our life. Jesus has come to give us new life with God when we put our faith and trust in Jesus. Therefore, we can say “Happy Christmas.” Therefore, we can sing “Joy to the world.” At Glenmore Park Anglican we want to share this great news with you at our “Carols in the Park” at Blue Hills Oval in Glenmore Park and our Christmas Celebration Services on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Say It Out Loud Who’s responsible for that terrible outdoor carpark at the town centre? Without a doubt an accident waiting to happen. While I am not a town planner nor am I qualified in the field of designing carparks, but surely, it would have been far more sensible to design a carpark that holds the safety of its patrons as a priority! Each time I drive to the centre, you play witness or participate in a giant game of jenga. Cars can’t freely pass one another in an aisle, therefore, one car patiently awaits the next to pass or reverse allowing them the freedom to make their next move. Patience is far from the issue, but rather the safety of pedestrians determined to reach their parked vehicles, return trolleys or dare they dart between one centre to the next. Surely it would make far more sense to design the space as ONE WAY - free flowing, reducing congestion and awkward navigation at the ends of each aisle, where you are faced head on with an oncoming vehicle with space limitations and moving obstacles (people) of prime concern. Glenmore Park’s Renee Walsh is a force to be reckoned with on the racetrack, with the local mum currently on top of the leader board in the Improved Production Class of the New South Wales Road Racing Championships. Renee, who races a 1999 Nissan Pulsar N15 SSS, has amazingly only been racing cars for two years. In that time, she has managed to beat her personal best times on the track by two seconds and even as much as five each race, improving her skills and making her very competitive. “My passion for motorsport came from a love of fast cars or modified cars. Since I could drive myself, you would find me at the Wednesday night drags with my friends. To smell rubber burning and petrol ignited something in me. I’ve always had a burning desire to participate” smiled Renee. “In 2017, my mum asked me to come and try a day with @trackdayclub at Wakefield Park. I remember having so much fun throwing a VY SS around the track. The next year, my parents gifted me with a Women’s Motorsport Development Program, which took us through various motorsport disciplines over a 10-part program. There was no turning back for me” she explained to the Glenmore Gazette. This year, Renee has raced at the three Eastern Creek Circuits, which are Druitt, South and Grand Prix. She has also taken to the track at Wakefield Park, Marulan, Huntley and Canberra SDMA Hill Climbs. Motorkhanas have been a favourite when testing her skills behind the wheel. “By the end of 2020, I hope to compete in door to door racing like the Australian Pulsar Racing Association (APRA) or the Improved Production Racing Association (IPRA). I want to continue to develop my skills during practice days” she said. Next year, Renee hopes to secure sponsorship via monetary or consumables like tyres, petrol, oil or parts. In return, she will have advertising space available on her race car for Round 1 or the entire 2020 season. If you would like more information, you can contact Renee at renee.walsh@live.com.au.

Thank You Glenmore Park: John and Karen Lavender to Retire After 23 years of Ministry at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, Karen and I, on January 31st, 2020 will be retiring. It was a Friday morning, back in December 1996 that our family first arrived at our new Glenmore Park home. On the same block, construction had begun on our new church building. In the meantime, Sunday church services happened in our garage! It was an exciting time, meeting with the 80 adults and children, the people of Glenmore Park Anglican Church. There were still many open fields with cows, horses and dams, although the sounds of construction of new homes were all around us. We arrived with the goal of sharing the love and good news of Jesus with Glenmore Park and the real difference he makes in people’s lives. With a great team, we soon began making connections with people around us. In May 1997, we moved into our new Church building. Our new building meant more space for our growing numbers. We had space for kids and youth groups. We were able to have groups for women and men. We could have activities for families. Over time, our one Sunday church service has become four weekly Sunday services in a newly extended building with around 600 people coming. It has been a great joy to see people coming to know Jesus for themselves. As the suburb of Glenmore Park continued to grow, the shopping centre was built, more schools were built, and our connections with people grew. Karen and I were able to have great conversations with so many of you - in your homes, at the shopping centre, at Carols in the Park, at our Christmas Gingerbread Extravaganza events, Junior Jivers playgroup, our parenting course, or at activities and services at our church, talking about Jesus, with thousands of you over many years. It has been a great privilege to be involved in the life of so many of you in our community. We have loved our time at Glenmore Park. Thank you Glenmore Park for so many good and happy memories. r [L] The Lavender Family [Inset] John and Karen Lavender [R] Opening of the Glenmore Park Church extension in December 2011 | Images + Article Supplied by John Lavender

our souls with peace and joy (the angels sang about that too), and I pray this blessing for your soul. Go well into 2020 and see you in the new year, Paul.
Angels Singing is Quite Rational! Christmas brings fun and stresses us out of our brains! For some it can be lonely or difficult - Christmas brings opportunities for kindness. But none of this explains why the angels sang. The angels sang because God sent a Saviour. You might say, “What do we need to be saved from?” A recent episode of Q&A on the ABC raised the question, “What will become of us?” The question surfaced as the panel discussed resource depletion, materialism, climate change, geo-political issues and our future security, and the challenges our children face. Politicians were seen to be suffering “short-termism” with eyes on the next election rather than vision that might save us from all of this (not true of all pollies). The point was clear: We need to be saved from ourselves so that our future is bright. Christmas celebrates the coming of Jesus Christ from God for that very purpose – to save us. Now, anything about Christmas beyond gifts and roast turkey might seem wildly irrational for you. Angels singing because of the arrival of a Saviour – really? However, if there is a higher power (for me, the loving God of the Bible) it is totally rational that this power – if worth believing in at all – would do something to help us. And if God is “higher”, it is rational that he would operate at a higher, supernatural dimension. It is mysterious but not illogical. The idea then, of God showing us better wisdom in Jesus is a rational thought. And it is rational that a higher power would do what we cannot do – overcome the power of our sins and the power of death. Angels singing about this is quite rational too! Mysteriously of a higher dimension, yes – this is the stuff of faith - but not illogical. God’s help when we ask, “What will become of us?” blesses

Community Sensory and Vegetable Garden Proposed A proposal is currently being investigated to develop a community sensory and vegetable garden in Glenmore Park. Uniting, who are working in partnership with the National Disability Insurance Scheme under the Information Linkages and Capacity Building framework, have formed the Glenmore Park Project Community Inclusion Steering Committee to look at this. The establishment of the garden will enable a free, accessible and inclusive environment for its visitors. This includes those living with a disability to participate in and benefit from the same community activities as everyone else. It aims to encourage exploration through an arrangement of themed garden and sensory fixtures, encapsulated with vegetative and plant life to assist people to touch, taste, admire and listen. One of three possible sites have been proposed for the garden in Glenmore Park, as Uniting liaise with Penrith City Council. The first site of interest is in Blue Hills, situated within the grounds of the Glenmore Park Child and Family Centre. The second site is located next to the Floribunda Community Centre, whilst the third proposed site is in the vicinity of the Surveyors Creek Community Centre. “I have chosen Glenmore Park as a point of interest as I am a local resident myself and we have a large cohort of families, including elderly and people living with disabilities in our local area. This garden would be a great activity for the community to come together at in an inclusive and accessible location, to learn from one another about sustainable lifestyles. “In my role as a Local Area Coordinator for Uniting, working in partnership with the National Disability Insurance Scheme under the Information Linkages and Capacity Building framework, I am privileged to be working in this space to facilitate growth within this community through the development of this project” said Uniting’s Julie Baltazar, who is managing the project. “I think it is very important to have projects like this one as it can facilitate the development of community connections, bring people together and build commitment in the local area for long-term social and cultural change for the participation and inclusion of people living with a disability” Julie added. If you would like to be added to their email mailing list to receive updates regarding the progress of the sensory and vegetable garden and be notified for the next committee meeting, please send your contact information to jbaltazar@ uniting.org.

Here Comes Santa in a Fire Truck Santa will be trading in his sleigh and reindeers for a fire truck this month, with the Regentville Rural Fire Brigade Santa Run visiting the local community to share some festive spirit. Pending the operational requirements of the brigade and their crew, the Regentville RFB Santa Run will visit the local suburbs of Glenmore Park, Mulgoa Rise, Regentville, Leonay, Emu Heights and South Penrith in December. New maps of the route and updates on Santa’s location will be made available shortly on Regentville RFB’s Facebook page. “Residents and the good boys and girls of our community can expect Santa out and about with the friendly firefighters from Regentville RFB handing out lollies, cheer and advice on what you can do for this already devastating fire season” said Jordan Jobson, Deputy Captain of Regentville Rural Fire Brigade to the Glenmore Gazette. “What we enjoy most about taking part in this event with Santa is getting out there and visiting the local community. The looks on the children’s faces when they see a fire truck out the front of their house and then the joyful (sometimes scared) tears when Santa gets out is priceless! After all the community does for us to be able to do our best to protect them, it’s nice to be able to give something back without the fear of an emergency situation” reflected Jordan. Be sure to follow our local rural fire brigade on Facebook at www.facebook.com/ rfsregentville for up to date information on Santa Runs and other activities taking place in the community. r Feature Article: [Cover] Santa preparing to head out to visit the good boys and girls [Above] Santa meeting Lachlan of Mulgoa Rise | Images Supplied by Regentville RFB

Local mum and small business owner Olivia Ciampi recently called on the community to rally around the rural fire brigade during the devastating November fires, resulting in the delivery of much needed water and non-perishable foods to the volunteer fire fighters through donations. Together with her son Beau, Olivia recently visited Mount Riverview Rural Fire Brigade, where her sister Tracey is a member, to deliver multiple cases of water and foods such as chips and muesli bars that were donated by many members of the local community, including herself. “My sister, who is a volunteer fire fighter, was recently deployed for 5 days up North to assist with property protection. Hearing her describe the scary conditions she was facing whilst she was providing help for these people and their property gave me the motivation to arrange a collection of donations from our local community through my business, platterlove and its Facebook page to reach as many people as possible. It may only be water to us, but to them it is absolutely crucial” said Olivia, from Glenmore Park. Olivia is currently arranging another collection of donations to pass on to the volunteer fire fighters before Christmas, through her business’ Facebook page. The anticipated date for collections and drop off is Sunday 15th December. “We are so lucky to have so many volunteers, who do not get paid, putting their lives on the line and spending time away from their loved ones to keep us safe. We live in a wonderful community and people really do enjoy being able to give back. I am more than happy to facilitate the logistics of collecting and donating” expressed Olivia. “I truly believe this local donation appeal will be huge and I know that it is appreciated by our firies” she ended. For those who would like to get involved with Olivia’s appeal, the items to be donated can include water, juice, chap sticks and non-perishable food items. PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Director) Cranebrook Community Pre School E: cranebrookcommunitypreschool@gmail.com Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
How do you handle Holiday Season? December can be a time of stress and overwhelm - parties, school assemblies, awards nights and shopping. Everyone gets tired and this can lead to frayed tempers and impatience. About 6 weeks out from Christmas we can sometimes hear parents say, “if you aren’t good, you won’t get any Christmas presents”. That’s tricky for the following reasons: • Do you really mean it? Are you going to follow through and not give your child any Christmas presents? It’s probably an empty threat (and the kids know it). • The consequence is not immediate enough. • The consequence probably isn’t related to the mistaken behaviour. • What does ‘good’ or ‘nice’ mean? It’s too vague. All the above can lead to an escalation of mistaken behaviour, which can make everyone’s life more difficult. The holiday season is supposed to be a time of kindness, peace and goodwill. You are allowed to take some time to breathe and enjoy. This includes giving your kids and yourself some downtime to reduce the overwhelm. Deal with your children’s behaviour in a calm and assertive manner. Tell them what they are doing wrong (for example, “you are yelling at your sister”) and what to do instead (for example, “speak kindly and calmly”). Deal with your child’s behaviour at the time that it occurs and give a consequence that is related to the mistaken behaviour (for example, take away the toy that the children are fighting over). Give an instruction a maximum of two times. The more times you ask, the greater the risk that you will get frustrated. If the child does not comply after two requests, you can issue a consequence (related to the behaviour of course). Another year is over. It’s a cliché but it’s true – treasure the moments you have with your kids. They will be adults one day, and you will wonder where the time went. You owe it to yourself and your kids to make the time as positive as possible. Get the undesirable behaviour over and done with quickly so you have more fun and times of connection. In the end, that’s all that really matters. Wishing you and your family a lovely holiday season.

Local School Supports Dyslexia Awareness
Students, teachers and staff of Regentville Public School recently took part in CODE REaD Day, a day in which they dressed in red to support Dyslexia Awareness. A group of passionate families and staff, led by Natalie Bland – Assistant Principal of Regentville Public School, known as the CODE REaD Team, was formed to assist with the day. Their aim was to demystify dyslexia and help deepen the understanding for teachers and families as they acknowledged, supported and empowered all learners. “The ‘buzz’ in the air was undeniable. The gentle simmer of empowerment spread throughout the day’s events. Of course, there was not one single event that surpassed any other. There was not one moment more important or significant than the rest. The generosity of time and the openness to embrace new learning and a willingness to acknowledge dyslexia, was at the heart of such a successful day” said Natalie Bland. “I had many conversations with families, students and teachers about their learning, experiences and encouragement for all learners, particularly as a result of CODE REaD at Regentville Public School” added Natalie. The special day ended with a red paper plane challenge, that was enjoyed by all.

Mini Christmas Puddings
Ingredients
One chocolate mud cake White chocolate (buds) One packet of raspberry lollies Method
1. You need a chocolate mud cake that is already made from the shops. Use a teaspoon to scoop the mud cake, like ice cream. Roll the mud cake into little balls. 2. Ask your helper to cut up a packet of raspberry lollies into small pieces. 3. Put the white chocolate into a microwave bowl. This next step is for your helper too, which is melting the chocolate. They need to reduce the power on the microwave to medium. Heat the white chocolate in the microwave for 30 - 90 seconds. 4. Remove the bowl from the microwave. Your helper needs to mix the white chocolate. It should be soft and not hard. Use a spoon to dab on little bits on to the top of the balls of chocolate mud cake. It looks like white frosting. 5. Put the cut up raspberry lollies on top of the white chocolate on the mud cake balls. 6. The mini Christmas puddings need to go in the fridge for an hour, until it sets. 7. Ready to serve.
Local Glenmore Park group Taste of Everything (TOE) have given back to the community in one big, selfless act after making and donating items to Fernhill School with the grant that they received this year from Penrith City Council. The women’s group used the money from the rolling grant they received to make items which included sensory blankets and pillows, weighted lap mats, squeeze balls, maze tunnels, children’s calendars and boards with locks and handles. These items were presented to the teachers and staff of Fernhill School at a special ceremony that took place last month. Group members Martha and Beryl also treated the attendees to a morning tea that was enjoyed by all. Martha’s husband Stephen was responsible for making the boards with locks and handles and these proved to be a popular item to be used for sensory play. Taste of Everything (TOE) are a group of women of all ages that come together to have a chat and a laugh. They meet on Thursdays at Floribunda Community Centre from 9:30am till 12:30pm. There is a cost of $5 per week, which goes towards morning tea. For more information, search TOE ‘Taste Of Everything’ on Facebook.

Guests enjoyed an evening of delight as Ghost Whisperer Suzie used her spiritual gift of psychic mediumship to relay messages to loved ones. It was an emotional night full of laughing, crying and of course, coming together to support a great cause. The night was also an opportunity to raise awareness of Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis (IPF), which is a rare lung disease in which the tissue around the air sacs within the lungs become thickened and scarred. This scarring makes the lungs stiff which makes it increasingly difficult to breathe. This slows the efficient delivery of oxygen into the bloodstream where it is needed to be transported to the rest of the body. Idiopathic, suggests ‘no known cause’ and currently there is no cure for those suffering with IPF. There were many winners on the night with over $2,000 worth of prizes generously donated by Citadines Connect Sydney Airport, The Day Spa Penrith – Jorja James Spa, Salt Therapy Wellness Centre, Emu Wellness, NIX on Park Lane Jewelry, Elsker Oils with Julie, Aussie Grown Catering, Michal Gabriel Beauty and Brow, Our Penrith, Lavilin Australia, Michelle Munday (Lorraine Lea Independent Stylist), Essential Bodyworks and Action Organising. Overall, the evening was a great success with the District Gazette raising a grand total $3,000. All proceeds went directly to Lung Foundation Australia. r Article: Sara Drebber

Local Young Achiever Nominated Jack Corcoran from Glenmore Park has been nominated for the First National Real Estate Leadership Award in the 2020 7NEWS Young Achiever Awards. Jack has a young brother with Downs Syndrome and has been a dedicated worker at the Rainbow Club, helping children with disabilities learn to swim. He is also a JP at only 19 years of age because he wants to give back to the community. Jack is a quietly spoken, generous, thoughtful young man who has experienced the challenges and joys of a family member with a disability. He has turned this experience into a strength to enable him to give back to other families experiencing the same challenges. He has continued to extend himself in service by becoming a JP and has helped teach children with a disability how to swim. We congratulate Jack for being nominated and wish him the best of luck with judging on Wednesday 11th December 2019. Finalists will be presented, and winners announced at an Awards Gala Presentation Dinner on Friday 20th March 2020. Category winners will each receive a trophy and over $2,000 worth of prizes, made up of a $1,500 Bartercard Trade Account, $500 cash from Awards Australia and a $300 voucher from Fly Pelican. One of the category winners will be named the 2020 NSW/ACT Young Achiever of the Year and will receive an additional $2,000 for their Bartercard Trade Account and a further $500 cash from Awards Australia, along with a magnificent state trophy. v Jack during his time at camp Pontiac America (NY) working as a lifeguard | Image Supplied: Jack Corcoran

Have Lower Back Pain? Then just get on the Bottle! I ask many of my ‘lower-back pain’ patients to get on the bottle! Nothing like a stiff drink to ease back pain, right? Just kidding of course. Patients lie down on a carpeted floor, place a foam roller (about the size of a standard wine bottle) under one side of the small of their back. The roller is placed either just to the left or to the right of the spine, never over the spine itself and patients breathe deeply in and out for 5-10 mins. The idea is to gently but deeply stretch lower back muscles beside the spine (using breaths) without bending the spine itself. This simple activity helps ameliorate back pain generally and avoids an increase in pain that may happen due to daily activities, between clinic sessions. Some patients shouldn’t do this activity, so it’s important to be assessed first. Let’s see why such stretching often helps reduce back pain. Scientists induce lower back pain in animals by injecting carrageenan to damage lower back tissues, causing inflammation, and infiltration of immune cells such as macrophages and neutrophils. Immune cells then release further signals that can exacerbate things, leading to ongoing pain and eventually to tissue fibrosis. Fibrosis is the formation of excess fibrous connective (scar) tissue in an organ or area during
any repair process that occurs in reaction to tissue injury. After carrageenan injections, these animals can’t walk properly, and their lower back is much more sensitive to mechanical stimulus. In short, their backs are painful, it hurts animals to move and so they have shortened stride lengths and lower instra-step distances. Studies have shown that low-amplitude static (non-cyclical) stretching stops fibrosis and inflammation. To test this in lower back inflammation, half the carrageen-injected animals underwent a stretching program. For 12 days, 10 minutes twice daily, animals did simple sustained back-stretching. Researchers found stretching: 1. lowered tissue inflammatory immune cells 2. decreased scar tissue formation 3. decreased mechanical sensitivity of the back 4. restored stride length and 5. restored intra-step distance, Appropriately done, stretching is an important therapy for musculoskeletal injuries, and patients who incorporate it often get better more quickly and with less suffering.

Sultana Family’s Spirit of Christmas
ONLINE
BUSINESS
Danielle and Damien Sultana have lived in Glenmore Park for over 15 years and love the community spirit, especially at Christmas. With three growing sons - Nicholas, 12; Dominic, 11; Benjamin, 7; and a young daughter, Amelia, 3; it is no wonder that the house is decked out with Christmas lights and is a highlight each year for their family. Although they love the light displays, Christmas for the Sultana family is most importantly about celebrating the birth of Jesus Christ and opening their hearts and home to celebrate with friends and loved ones. Christmas is a crazy, busy but wonderful time of year for the Sultana family. In addition to catching up with over one hundred of Damien’s extended family, two of the children celebrate birthdays in December which, according to Danielle, means that pretty much the whole of December is about celebrating and eating way too much food! As Danielle is a nurse at Nepean Hospital, she works Christmas Day every second year but tries to work a night shift so that ENTER CODE ONLINE: she can spend as much of the day with the family. This year she is blessed to be on holidays and ONLINEBDGAZ excited to spend the whole day celebrating with her loved ones. One of their favourite traditions is on Christmas Eve when the children receive a giftbox which has new pyjamas, a Christmas movie and some snacks. As a family, they watch the movie in their new pjs whilst eating the snacks then they get in the car and drive around looking at all the beautifully decorated houses. On Christmas Day this year, Danielle, Damien and the children plan to attend church at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, go to lunch at Danielle’s Mum’s house, followed by dinner at Damien’s parent’s house. What a special way to spend this joyous season!

I know it’s a cliché but try to do away with the presents and be present this Christmas. Years (even months) down the track it’s hard to recollect the material possessions that we were gifted with, but we do remember the highs and lows, the times when we were reduced to tears and when we rolled around on the lounge room floor in fits of laughter. If only I could have ‘one’ more Christmas with my loved ones who were taken too soon. We have plenty of Christmas cheer, events, festivities and a recipe to help you get in the spirit! We’ll be back in the New Year, with our first edition in February. Until then, stay safe and enjoy Your Community News. ‘Time is precious, make sure you spend it with the right people’.
