BUSINESS Spotlight

Inspire Up Care is a family owned NDIS registered Disability Service Provider based in Glenmore Park. We provide service to South Western Sydney, South Eastern Sydney, Sydney Metro, Northern Sydney, Western Sydney, and the Nepean Blue Mountains area. Director of Inspire Up Care Kaniz Sarmin states, “Being a parent of a special needs child, I have always thought about the shortcomings of the caregivers in terms of quality and consistency as I was taking services for my son. I always thought that there should be a person centric approach from organisations and we could do better in providing services to the participants”. “So, after 6 years of involvement with NDIS and 2 years of hands-on experience in building Plans, I started my own NDIS registered service, providing organisation with qualified carers with excellent feedback. All the carers are updated with their training and certification. I am an Architect by profession, but never did I feel so much gratification,

until I changed my profession to disability support. Every participant is like my family now and I take great pride in supporting them and help them navigate through NDIS”. We are together with Glenwest Medical Centre, providing primary and disability healthcare services tailored to your needs. Below are the categories of our services we provide: 1. Personal care (shower, grooming, toilet etc) 2. Social and community participation 3. Domestic assistance (cleaning, gardening, lawn mowing etc) 4. Development of life skills 5. Restoring Fish Habitat and Bushland in Regentville

Hawkesbury-Nepean Landcare Network (HNLN), fishing conservation charity OzFish Unlimited and Penrith City Council Bushcare team are working with volunteers to improve the health and habitat of School House Creek in Regentville. HNLN is calling on residents to come along to an event and help care for our creeks and waterways at School House Creek and throughout Penrith. School House Creek is connected to the Nepean River and is downstream from Glenmore Loch, with the River Flat Eucalypt Forest adjacent to the creek playing an important role for filtering urban runoff and reducing erosion, and sedimentation of the watercourse. Over three events organised by HNLN last year, volunteers planted 250 plants to restore the banks and bushland of the creek, tested water quality, removed weeds and had a guest speaker talk about platypus in the region. This project is supporting the hard work and dedication of the long standing Bushcare Group at the site who will continue nurturing the site once this project finishes. Volunteers said they enjoy the chance to give back to nature, learning more about local wildlife and meeting other local residents. The project and events continue in 2021 with activities such as Streamwatch, planting, frog identification and nature walks. Register below or contact HNLN to get involved. Angus Fanning, Project Manager with OzFish Unlimited said projects like this are great for kids and families as they gain a better understanding of how the ecosystem works in a fun environment. Katherine Clare, Local Landcare Coordinator for HNLN agreed and said she looks forward to running more of these weekends and improving the long-term health of School House Creek. “We all love and benefit from our creeks and rivers and it’s wonderful to see the community coming together to care and restore a local waterway. It is a big task so we will need all the help we can muster to look after the plants at School House Creek” said Ms Clare. The project was made possible by the OzFish-Landcare NSW partnership through the NSW Recreational Fishing Trust with support from BCF – Boating, Camping Fishing, the Tate Endowment Fund, Penrith City Council, Hawkesbury River County Council and HNLN. Contact HNLN on landcare@hrcc.nsw.gov.au or call 4574 9600 and join Penrith Landcare & Bushcare Facebook group to stay up to date.

Empowering Our Youth

Standing Strong is a health and wellness club that has been designed to help children stand strong. Local resident Tracey Rylewski has recently launched the club to the community, which is aimed at girls aged 5 to 17 years, with boys’ groups opening soon. “Standing Strong provides evidence-based programs designed to support and empower children to build confidence, self-esteem, resilience and connection through holistic and preventative approaches to health and wellbeing. The programs have been developed utilising three core components of Strong Body- Movement, Strong Mind- Mindset and Strong Heart- Mindfulness” explained Tracey to the Glenmore Gazette. Tracey believes that the skills that children learn at Standing Strong are important for the health and well being of their everyday lives. “Today more than ever, parents are searching for ways to support the physical and mental health needs of their children. The concerns of parents are supported by the results found in the latest Mission Australia Youth Survey which showed mental health to be the most important issue young people are facing. The study of over 25,000 children showed stress, school and study problems, mental health and body image to be the top four personal concerns for children in Australia (Mission Australia Youth Survey Report 2019)” she stated. These health issues are being tackled head on by Standing Strong, the nation’s first health and wellness club dedicated to supporting the physical and mental health and wellbeing needs of children. After launching their first programs in 2013, Standing Strong is committed to supporting local children and families in the Penrith area. “After listening to Kim Smith (Founder of Standing Strong) speak about her experiences and programs, I was instantly drawn to her and felt personally connected to everything she was saying. I knew then that I wanted to create a similar space for young people in my local area. Standing Strong is everything I needed when I was a young girl, and the Standing Strong values align with my own. The non-clinical, child-centred approach is so important when working with young people. That coupled with my love of connecting with and empowering young people is why I became the Licensee for the Penrith area” Tracey reflected. If you search on the term “reflective listening” you will get many different ways of being a reflective listener. I find reflective listening a wonderful tool, but when I teach it to parents they say “that’s weird”. I tell them to go home and try it, and let me know how it’s going for them in a week’s time. Many parents come back and say “it really works”. For parents of adolescents they say that reflective listening has changed the relationship between them and their young person. Here is one way that I use reflective listening… Child: Jack didn’t play with me at lunchtime today. Parent: Oh, Jack didn’t play with you at lunchtime. (Same tone, same affect) Child: Nup Parent: Hmmm Child: He played soccer with Caleb instead. Parent: So, he played soccer with Caleb instead. Child: Yeah Parent: Yeah (with a big sigh) Long silence. Child: I think I’ll play soccer with Jack tomorrow. Parent: You’ve decided to play soccer with Jack tomorrow. Sounds like a plan. What do you notice about this interaction? The child solved his own problem. Notice the absence of the parent giving advice. Notice the absence of the parent asking more questions. Notice the presence of silence and space, and this is the magic of it. Our kids are so used to us giving advice and asking lots of questions that they quite often don’t talk about their stuff because they don’t want the fuss or the lecture. When you give kids lots of silence and space, they open up. Why? Because it is now emotionally safe to do so. Sometimes it takes a while for the child to get used to it, and the communications end quickly. Keep using it, they’ll get used to it. Kids are clever. They usually have some idea of how they might go about solving their problems. After a good while of reflective listening, if the child hasn’t generated his own solutions, you might want to ask “I wonder what you might do about it?” and do some more reflective listening. r

Clean Up Australia Day is back next month. It’s a time when thousands of people around the country roll up their sleeves and give an hour of their time to help clean up rubbish in their local communities. For Glenmore Park mother Justine Milne, it’s an annual event for her family to participate in that was inspired by a bike ride in the park with her two young sons. “We love our area. One day whilst on a bike ride, the kids asked us why people just leave rubbish everywhere, making our community look like a mess that is bad for the environment and the animals” reflected Justine. “We discussed things we could do to keep the area we live in clean and tidy for us all to enjoy. Firstly, the kids suggested they bring their rubbish home if there is no bin and then I suggested this initiative to them as both boys have always been in the environment and like to help. They both quickly agreed” she continued. Justine and husband Aaron will be joined by their sons Blake and Hayden on Clean Up Australia Day on Sunday 7th March from 7:30am till 8:30am and they have nominated Ched Towns Reserve in Glenmore Park. “Both boys enjoy sports at football and soccer ovals, so this was a great place to start. During COVID lockdown, we spent much more time in our own backyards so to speak and we enjoyed the time we returned to our ovals and parks when we could” Justine explained. Justine recommends getting behind Clean Up Australia Day. “This is a small way we can lead by example as adults, where we can get out and join our community for a great cause that benefits us all. It’s free and only takes just an hour of your time on a Sunday morning. “Events like this brings the area together. It inspires and empowers communities to clean up, fix up and conserve the environment” she said. For more information about Justine’s group, visit https:// www.cleanupaustraliaday.org.au/fundraisers/justinemilne.

Celebrating her 6th birthday just three days before starting Kindergarten makes for a pretty big week for Izabella Martin, who will be joining children all over the country starting school for the very first time. Izabella, the eldest of three with sisters Amelia (3 and a half years) and Olivia (8 weeks), will officially start Kindergarten this month, having been enrolled at Regentville Public School. With several dress rehearsals and practicing how to pack her school bag, Izabella can’t wait to walk through the front gates as a Kindy student. “Learning new things and making new friends” she said, when asked about what she is looking forward to the most about starting school. Izabella’s mother Cassandra Carter is preparing for all the mixed emotions that come with sending your first child off into the world of education. “As a mum, I want what is best for her and have been preparing her as much as I possibly can. From Izabella attending preschool, to reading educational books, teaching her to read and write and preparing her socially for Kindergarten” said Cassandra. “I am extremely nervous and yet so excited for her to start Kindergarten. She is more than ready to branch out into the world. I can’t wait to see her grow and what she can achieve in life. We couldn’t be prouder of her” she added. With a love of arts and crafts, Izabella is keen to explore her creative flair. She has been known to take her time to make sure all her artworks are perfect before they are finished! That leaves the big question. What does she want to be once she leaves school and is grown up? “A Teacher, Vegetable Farmer or a Nurse” smiled Izabella. “I’ve grown up in Glenmore Park from a young age and have always thought of it as home. It is such a lovely community with many kind and helpful people. I am so grateful to have my daughters grow up here, just like her parents. I’m so excited to have Izabella go to Regentville Public School as it’s close to our home and it’s a lovely school with a great support system” ended Cassandra. Best of luck Izabella and all the children starting and returning to school this year.

The safety of you, your family and our staff are our number 1 priority.

HEALTH MATTERS

Fermentation – Enhances Nutritive Value of Grains, for Strong Knee Cartilage Microorganisms beneficial for humans are known as probiotics. Whole grains are excellent food sources for probiotic microorganisms, encouraging their multiplication and continued residence in our large intestine. A ‘synbiotic’ is a synergistic-blend of prebiotics (e.g. grains) and probiotics. From previous articles you’ll remember cereal grains contain many antinutrients: digestive enzyme inhibitors, tannins, phytic acid. These components hamper our carbohydrate and protein digesting enzymes, and stop us digesting our food. They reduce vitamin & mineral absorption and are a big ‘reason for minerals deficiencies in’ humans. To avoid these problems, aboriginal cultures traditionally didn’t eat unfermented grains. Rather they soaked/sprouted and ground their grains, then added microbes to make a synbiotic flour mixture, and allowed this to stand often for two days or more, so that microbes could ‘ferment’ the grains. In the fermentation process, probiotic microbes multiply rapidly and spend all their time breaking-down / removing all the antinutritive factors in grains. Microbes also break down proteins (such as gluten) and carbohydrates (such a FOS that

10 February 2021 www.glenmoregazette.com.au

cause gas) to make them harmless, and easy for us to digest and absorb. They also make completely new compounds that serve as healthy food sources for the cells lining our gut. They liberate minerals from phytates, liberate some vitamins and make many new ones for us. Fermentation is the most crucial process for lowering antinutrient content and enhancing nutritive value of cerealgrain foods. Modern cereal foods aren’t fermented (breakfast cereals). Bread makers often leave just 30min for carbon-dioxide production, but no time for true fermenting. You can make fermented grain products yourself. Just mix sprouted organic whole-grain flower with sourdough starter, let it ferment & rise for 48 hours at room temperature, before baking your own healthy bread. Or your rolled oats can be boiled then mixed with kefir yoghurt and even various fruits and nuts, allowed to ferment for 48 hours at room temperature, then placed in the fridge for storage & eaten cold in summer or warmed in winter. This way of eating grains is healthy and provides many nutrients including minerals such as zinc for strong knee cartilage. Eating a diet high in unfermented cereal grains can lead, to nutrient deficiency and weak knee cartilage and knee problems.

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.gpachurch.online Service Times: Sundays @ 9am, 10.45am and 5pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week. What will 2021 be like for you? It is a year since my family, and I moved into Glenmore Park and I took on the role of Senior Minister at our church. The lawns everywhere were brown, the ground baked dry and the threat of fires still lurking. Little did we know what 2020 would bring! It was only a matter of weeks before COVID19 started to circle the globe. As the year starts, it is a good time to evaluate what is important and what is not. At times of threat, it is easy to ‘circle the wagons’ and seek to protect ourselves and our own interests. However, life is not about the protection of self-interest but seeking the good of others in response to God. It is fundamental as human beings to see that we depend on God and what he has done for us in his Son, Jesus. Having God in your life gives shape to everything else, it helps you see what is important and what is not. It helps you see what is worth spending your time on and what is not. This year, more than any other, might be the right time to let God give shape to your life so it can be filled with the most important things.

Emergency Services

We’ve arrived at 2021, and there’s no doubt it has arrived already with it’s own challenges. We’ve all come to terms with the limitations introduced over the past 12 months as a result of COVID. With masks forming part of our ‘everyday’ wear, sanitizer available everywhere we turn and social distancing the ‘new’ norm. Despite this, 2021 will see plenty of new beginnings, wonderful stories and chapters that continue to evolve as we continue on this journey of life. It may be a bumpy ride with hurdles and various obstacles, but rest assured, we’re in it together and we’ll get through this! Look for the beauty in every moment, capture the magic, focus on the positives. It’s our first edition of the year and we are so pleased to be back sharing wonderful local stories of true hope and inspiration! ‘Accept what is, let go of what was, and have faith in what will be’.
