FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH
Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Mahoney P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au. Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.
A Fresh Start for 2020 Well, its February, and the New Year may have lost its shine a little, but 2020 is in full swing. I hope your year still feels full of possibilities but if it doesn’t, I’d like to suggest one to you. This year, 2020, might be the perfect time to start getting to know Jesus. I don’t mean listening to what others have to say about him, and I don’t mean just thinking about those old stories you might have heard as a child. I mean getting to know about Jesus from Jesus. Read his words for yourself. Read the first biographies written about him in the Bible. The Books of Matthew, Mark, Luke and John, if you haven’t read them as an adult, 2020 may be the perfect time to see Jesus for yourself. It’s not about what the media says about him, it’s not about what I say about him. Instead, it’s about what he said, what he did, who Jesus really was. And it’s about who Jesus is, now. If you haven’t thought about it for yourself in a while, 2020 might be the perfect opportunity. So whatever other possibilities you’re going to enjoy this year, why not make space for one more? Pick up the Bible, read the first biographies of Jesus for yourself, who knows what you might find! I mean, Jesus could be just a 1st century carpenter that somehow got remembered by history or he could be the single most significant figure in all of history and someone that can make a difference to your personal history today. Of course, if you don’t own a Bible, then investigating Jesus for yourself isn’t a possibility is it! In which case, we’d love to help, feel free to visit us at church or give us a call and we can give you a copy. Indeed, if you do start reading and you have questions, we’d also love to talk with you about them, can’t promise we have all the answers but I’m sure we’ll enjoy the conversation! What The Bushfires Teach Us The tragedy and challenge of the bushfires teach us how fragile life can be. You would need to be pretty heartless not to feel the pain of those suffering loss or stranded and fearful as a blazing fire wall approached. And as I watched the footage on TV it was reinforced for me how much we need each other. The fragile nature of life forces us to look to each other, and at these times we see the best of humanity. We see sacrificial acts of service, radical generosity, courage, bravery and love. Amidst heart-breaking difficulty, we see each other, connect with each other, and are there for each other. And something inside tells us that these sorts of characteristics emerging in the middle of the worst of things are actually part of the best of life. It shows us that we were made to live not just for ourselves but for each other. The poet John Donne wrote: “No man is an island, entire of itself; every man is a piece of the continent.” What he meant was that we need each other, and we cannot live our best life with our hearts and lives disconnected from others. That’s why the human qualities emerging in the struggles of the bushfires makes our hearts swell with pride in being human. The work of our firefighters shows this clearly. Their selfless courage, sacrifice and love not only bless us with the best of humanity, but also point to the fact that in the midst of the challenges of our fragile life we all need help. God sent his son Jesus Christ to help us. The Bible describes Jesus somewhat like a firefighter showing selfless love and literally sacrificing his life to help us amid our fragile lives. If your soul is suffering remember that “no man is an island”. Reach out to others and reach out to Jesus Christ. Go well into 2020, Paul

Glenmore Park’s Emma Burnet, a third-year nursing student at Western Sydney University, was recently selected to complete an elective unit overseas in Pokhara, Nepal in January. Whilst studying there, Emma used the opportunity to help raise funds for Nepalese hospitals in local and rural locations. Emma volunteered in hospitals and rural villages in Nepal, observing how different healthcare was in another country and helped provide much needed services to the community. She assisted in operating a mobile health camp in villages where access to healthcare was limited and conducted physical assessments. This also included providing sexual and reproductive health education sessions to local boys and girls, in order to improve their quality of life and encourage them to adopt healthy lifestyles. “It has always been my dream to help provide healthcare to countries where access to healthcare services is so limited. I believe that we are so lucky to have the access to amazing services and would really like to share my experience with as many people as I can, to inform and educate people on the challenges developing countries experience” said Emma to the Glenmore Gazette. “As an avid trail runner, I also gave myself a personal goal of running 350km from November to January” she added. Emma has a GoFundMe page that she has set up to assist in her fundraising appeal. The funds will be used for hospital equipment such as wheelchairs and to assist with scholarships for Nepalese university nursing students. To donate, search ‘Help Emma Run Her Way to Help People In Nepal’ at www.gofundme.com.

Ingrid’s Mission to help our Wildlife It is estimated that millions of wildlife have been tragically lost due to the recent Australian bush fires. There are also high numbers that have been left sick and injured that need our care. Glenmore Park resident Ingrid Carr has been moved by this and has began to sew pouches that can be used to assist in the care of these animals. “I came across a story on social media about a group of ladies that were sewing various items to help our injured wildlife. The story called for other sewers and crafters to help, as there was such a huge demand. I hadn’t sewn for many years but being an animal lover and seeing all those heartbreaking images, I knew I had to help” said Ingrid. Ingrid is a member of The Animal Rescue Crafters Guild on Facebook, a hub where crafts are posted. There are also various groups online where requests for items are fulfilled and distributed where required for the animals. “Each pouch that I make consists of 3 pouches. There’s an outer cover pouch, a softer inserts pouch and a spare soft insert pouch. I have so far made 8 sets, which is a total of 24 pouches, and hope to complete more. “Our local community have already been amazing, and some people have donated fabrics for me to use. I now have a huge supply of fabric to get through” she said. r Some of the wildlife pouches | Image: Ingrid Carr

Ever since I can remember, I have had a love for radio. As a child I used to dream of sitting in a studio and conducting my own program. I would regularly go, as part of the audience, to watch shows being recorded seeing many of the stars of yesterday. Eventually my dream was realised and I was given the opportunity to move to the country to work on the local station. That love has remained, and over the years I have stayed with radio both commercial and our local community station. I have been fascinated since the advent of the internet and the many opportunities offered via that medium. A big part of the internet is music and generally people are turning to the internet for their music entertainment. Whist there are quite a few internet stations operating, these aim their music at the younger audience. I felt that there was a hole to be filled, so Reminiscing Music was put together to fill that void. It offers listeners the music that they grew up with and the music they love. If you love the music from the 50’s, 60’s, 70’s and 80’s as much as I do and you enjoy different music styles (Rock, Standards, Country, Jazz etc), try reminiscingmusic.com. School is in for Brooklyn School bells are ready to ring, and playgrounds are soon to be filled as a new year of children eagerly await to start Kindergarten for the first time across the country. One of those children is Brooklyn Kershaw, who will be attending Regentville Public School. Brooklyn is excited about her new journey ahead and there’s so much she is already looking forward to. Her first day, craft, making new friends, new classroom, buying stuff from the canteen, joining the choir and learning to write and maths are all on her list. “I’m a bit nervous, but I know everything will be OK and I’ll be safe” she smiled. “As a teacher myself, I’ve prepared her socially and emotionally more than anything else. It’s always important to make sure a child is ready to thrive rather than survive at big school” said Rebecca Kershaw, Brooklyn’s Mum. Starting school for the first time can be just as nervous for parents as it is for their children. It’s not uncommon for Mums and Dads to shed a tear as they wave goodbye. “It is exciting! But let’s face it, it’s nerve wracking and emotional for a Mum to let go of their baby into the hands of the education system for the next 13 years. I have fears but am equally as ready to watch her go on and make her mark on this world. I look forward to all the challenges she will take on to make both myself and her own self proud” explained Rebecca. “One thing I’m certain of is that she will skip happily off to class with her teacher on that first day and I’ll be burying my head in a box of tissues!” she added. Brooklyn, who enjoys drawing, singing and dancing, has already set herself some lofty ambitions of what she wants to be when she finishes school. r Feature Article: [Cover] All ready for big school | Brooklyn loves to “I want to be an archeologist, a policewoman or a vet” she ended. draw. PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/
Have You Given Any Thought To Your Parenting Goals This Year? We set personal goals and work goals. We watch lifestyle shows on the television or scan social media to get ideas about how we want to make changes to our home and garden. We make holiday plans. How often do we take stock of what is happening within our family? What is going well? What could we do better? What are our family’s values and how do we communicate and role model our values to and for our children? With parenting we often fall into autopilot mode. We fall into familiar ways of interacting and behaving. Humans are social and emotional beings. The foundation for our health and wellbeing is connection and belonging. Family can provide the most important and satisfying relationships that we will ever experience, or the most damaging. The difference between establishing and maintaining constructive or destructive relational patterns is intention and reflection. Intention is staying focused on what we want to achieve. Reflection is thinking about what went well and what we could do better next time. This can be such hard work but it can be achieved with small and consistent change. The effort requires kindness – with yourself and others. Kind enough to allow for mistakes and to learn from them. It also requires bravery – being brave enough to try again and keep going. Kindness and bravery go hand in hand. I recently came across the concept of ‘Ubuntu’ which is a Southern African word meaning “I am because we are”. That rings true for our children and for ourselves. In a TEDX talk by Dozie Okeleke (https://youtube/vBUy7XmbB7M) he quotes an African saying “If you want to go fast, go alone. If you want to go far, go together”. And so it goes when we are interacting with our children. For example, if we are nagging or yelling at our child, and the child becomes belligerent, we may get frustrated with the child’s behaviour. Reflecting on this situation – what do we want to achieve and what is the most effective way to manage it that honours the people involved and the family as a whole? What have your child and you learnt from the experience? We are all a work in progress.

Fostering a Love of Reading
Reading is a fundamental skill that involves interpreting and comprehending written words. At school, the main focus for children is to learn to read, then as children get older, the focus shifts on reading to learn. Amongst all this learning, sometimes the love of reading gets sidelined, or perhaps the spark of joy fails to ignite. It is difficult to love reading when you struggle to interpret meaning. It is also difficult to love reading when you only see it as a chore or task to be completed. It is proactive to be diligent in encouraging your child to love reading from a young age. In order to foster a love of reading, it is important to build positive experiences around reading. One way to do this is to simply read books to your child whilst they listen or follow along with their eyes. This can be done in short bursts to build up the ability to sustain attention, and gradually move to longer sessions, perhaps when the story is quite engaging, or the attention span develops. Another way to build a positive experience is to let your child read whatever interests them. They don’t need to be reading a novel, they could read a comic, magazine, newspaper, website, blog or information book. Make reading fun by letting them have control over what they read – the library is a great place for this as there are so many books available and it costs you nothing to join. The greatest way to foster a love of reading is to share your love of reading with your child. Let them see you reading a book, or if you are reading an article or post on your phone (even if it is social media) tell your child you are reading. Explain how you enjoy reading and how it makes you feel to be able to learn something new or to use your imagination. Remember: “Children are made readers on the laps of their parents.” – Emilie Buchwald. r Shared reading experiences can encourage a love of reading | Image: www.pexels.com. New Day Programs at Glenmore Park D A R E Disability Support was started in 1961 by a group of Katoomba parents who w a n t e d to create oppor tunities for their children that were otherwise unavailable at the time. Almost 60 years later, we continue their work, maintaining the caring ethos in which the parents began. Over this time, DARE has expanded and evolved many times, and now, we’re expanding again. We’re now offering Day Program services in the Surveyors Creek Community Centre at Glenmore Park. At DARE Day Programs, we support and encourage people to participate in the community, meet new friends, have fun, learn, explore, connect and follow their dreams. It’s such an important part of being happy and fulfilling your potential. Michael, one of our Day Activities participants, comes to programs at DARE and works on the ground crew. Since coming to programs, Michael has noticed a change in himself: “It’s changed me around a bit, I’m happy and it’s fun. Yeah, I like it. I’m very lucky. I am a nice person but sometimes I start trouble, so, you never know when I can get angry, that’s the thing. But, I haven’t been angry for a while… I don’t get stressed here, I like it here.” If you want to hear more of Michael’s story visit our website: https://www.daredisability.org.au/activities. Or if you’re interested in Day Activities at DARE’s new location please get in touch by calling Chris on 4751 5266, emailing him at churley@ daredisability.org.au, or visiting our website. DARE Disability Support is an NDIS Accredited local provider who has been supporting people with a disability in the Blue Mountains, Penrith, and Hawkesbury regions since 1961. We currently provide support to approximately 200 service users throughout our residential, community activities, recreation & leisure, support coordination and business services. r Meet new friends and have fun, just like Michael | Image Supplied

Confidence to Thrive and Excel St Paul’s Grammar School is proud of the recent achievements of our Year 12, 2019 students who have demonstrated such a motivated commitment to their studies. Senior students at St Paul’s study either the Higher School Certificate or the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme – choosing the credential that best suits their skills and interests. Combining our 2019 results, 49% of students achieved an ATAR above 80 and 18% achieved an ATAR above 90, with strong results recorded across a broad range of subjects. We believe the foundation for our students’ ongoing achievement year after year is our commitment to developing and educating the whole child. St Paul’s offers extensive cocurricular activities that help students grow academically, physically, emotionally and spiritually within a safe and supportive environment - giving them the confidence to thrive and excel. This is aided by the many benefits students receive from attending a school that features beautiful, expansive grounds with excellent teaching, learning and sporting facilities. This is St Paul’s - and we have bold plans for the future. As a consequence of continued growth and our desire to ensure the provision of quality learning facilities, we have developed an ambitious campus-wide Master Plan. Delivering Stage 1 of this plan will see the construction of an Innovation Learning Centre, housing state-of-the-art STEM facilities, Mathematics learning spaces, a modern library, lecture theatre and more. This is an exciting development of great benefit to our school community and all future students. Much like the school itself, there is no doubt that each member of the St Paul’s class of 2019 is ready to forge ahead into the future with the will and skills to succeed and the capacity to make a positive and lasting impact wherever their journey takes them.

Adopt a Friend for Life! Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check by a veterinarian to ensure they are healthy. They have had their first vaccination, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 4 lovely kittens ready for adoption now. They have been raised here from a young age at the veterinary hospital and are very dog friendly. Female, ginger short hair, born 9.11.19, approx. 12 weeks of age. Male, black short hair, born 9.11.19, approx. 12 weeks of age. Male, white and tabby short hair, born 5.10.19, approx. 16 weeks of age. Male, tabby and white short hair, born 5.10.19, approx. 16 weeks of age. They all have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision. Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious kitten diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must be also given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. A lunar rainbow is formed when water droplets in the earth’s atmosphere refract and reflect the moon’s white light. As moonlight is dimmer than sunlight, and our eyes need light to see colour, the lunar rainbow appears as a glowing pale arc – a ghostly version of its daylight cousin.

Headaches! Could It Be Your Muscles - Muscling-In On Your Happy Life Headache is the most common cause of neurological consultation for doctors, most being ‘primary headache’, i.e. not the result of another medical condition such as a tumour or aneurism. Correctly diagnosing headache cause is vital, it might be a ‘red-flag’ to a rare underlying condition that may be serious & possibly life-threatening. E.g. headaches with: 1. Sudden onset, severe (thunderclap) headaches could signal a. intracranial haemorrhage, b. vertebral artery dissection, c. cerebral venous thrombosis d. reversible cerebral vasoconstriction syndrome 2. stiff neck, nausea, vomiting, recent onset of confusion, altered consciousness, fever raises concerns of infection. 3. sensory changes, weakness, double vision or visual field defects also need investigation 4. enlarged blind spot suggests papilledema / raised intracranial pressure 5. worse for coughing, straining, sneezing may signal raised intracranial pressure 6. worse for eye movement and/or impaired vision may suggest inflammation of the optic nerve Most people get primary headaches: 1. Tension-type, 2. migraine, 3. cluster headaches.
38% of the population suffer tension headaches, 10% migraines and <1% cluster headaches, and almost all migraine suffers also have tension headaches. A Danish study found risk factors for: 1. migraine were familial disposition, no vocational education, a high work load, frequent tension-type headache. 2. tension-type headache, were poor self-rated health, inability to relax after work, sleeping few hours per night. Many of these risk factors may lead directly to increased stress levels, which can affect muscles. Neurologist Egilius Spierings, states ‘Tension headache is thought to be caused by a lack of sleep, stress, hunger, thirst, eye strain or’ head neck and shoulder muscle strain, ‘usually due to bad posture - think sitting at your desk all day’, while migraine ‘occurs when blood vessels in the head dilate’, but ‘just as with tension headache, stress on the muscles in the neck, jaw and shoulders may also play a role’. Given this you’d be surprised that Spierings says ‘in the headache world, …no attention being paid to muscles’, as headache prevention or treatment generally focused on ‘pharmacological intervention’. Experience shows remedial work to neck & shoulder muscles provides considerable benefit for primary headaches. If you need help call us at the clinic.

Well, what a tough few months it has been. You don't need me to tell you about the devastation these fires have caused for families and business owners, or the health implications faced by many with existing respiratory or other health concerns. What is worth highlighting is the heroic efforts of all of our wonderful emergency services workers, many of whom worked tirelessly for days, weeks and months to help provide the best outcome for our friends, neighbours and communities. As we face 2020, somewhat with a degree of uncertainty about our future climate and landscape, one thing we know for sure is that our community spirit is 100% alive. We are very fortunate to be surrounded by the strength and support of this amazing community that we each call home. We're glad to be back at the tip of 2020 with another year full of inspiring local stories and accomplishments, supporting local businesses and delivering directly to your door! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Your speed does not matter. Forward is forward!'.
