FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www. glenmoreparkanglican.com.au. Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

Don’t Misunderstand It’s easy to have misunderstandings, especially when translating one language to another. When the giant company Kellogg took their popular breakfast cereal “Bran Buds” to Sweden, they couldn’t understand why it wasn’t selling. They soon discovered that roughly translated in Swedish, “Bran Buds” meant “burnt farmer.” This was a simple but costly misunderstanding! People have many ideas of what it means to be a Christian, but sadly, many are misunderstandings. So what is at the heart of what it means to be a Christian? When the Apostle Paul wrote his letter in the Bible to the Churches in the region of Galatia, that is, in the region of today’s Turkey, in the opening to his letter he gave a clear statement of what is central to be being a Christian. He said, “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age.” At its heart Christianity is about rescue; a rescue achieved for us by Jesus. This will challenge our pride, but the reality is, we are not the people we want to be. We do not love God with our heart, soul, mind and strength, nor do we love our neighbour as ourselves. More often than not we do not have God in the centre of our life and we think more of what is good for us rather than what is good for my neighbour. In Denmark, an airline office advertised: “We take your bags and send them in all directions.” Don’t make the same misunderstanding about Jesus. What foundation are you building your life on? Something taking your life in all directions or the rescue we have in Jesus? We would love you to join us at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, on Sundays, or at many of the events happening throughout the week, so you too can enjoy and benefit from the rescue that Jesus brings! Help when we cannot Help Ourselves Alcoholics Anonymous recognises the need for a greater power in the journey of finding freedom from addiction. Beating addiction is one example of something we cannot achieve without help. There are other things we will face in life that we cannot resolve without help from a greater power. Some of these are closer to home than we would like to admit. The Bible teaches that through the beauty and power of creation God is showing himself to us. The God of the Bible is loving and powerful, and he wants to reveal himself because he wants to help us when we cannot help ourselves. Often however we cannot see him. We live in a beautiful place but when we are busy, we can easily miss the beauty all around us and miss God. When we cannot help ourselves, we are left without help or hope. In the swirl of life all we see is computer screens, late trains, bills, and idiots in the traffic. The other day I noticed the mist hovering over the Nepean River like dancing fairy floss. It was exquisite in its form and colour as the sunset spilled its light onto this wispy canvas. My tired heart was warmed and lifted. There were no words, but I knew God had shown me something of himself. The sheer beauty of it made it something in the “greater” category, something not man-made. Whenever God reveals himself the human soul is lifted and fortified. We are touched with what is beautiful and good and the hard stuff takes a back seat at least for a while - giving way to hope for long enough to find fresh legs. But when we are consistently close to God, we can find answers and help to resolve the hard stuff for good. The Bible also teaches that Jesus Christ is the way to God – to greater help when we cannot help ourselves.

Our Community Vet on the Grow This month brings some exciting news to the local community, with Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital relocating to bigger premises. The muchloved vet has moved from 377 Wentworth Road to 49 Wentworth Road in Orchard Hills and are now just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green, bull-nosed verandah around the front of the building. They even have a concrete driveway and carpark. There is an off-leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. Local customer Carole from Glenmore Park said, “We thoroughly recommend all pet owners to check out Orchard Hills Vet if you are not already doing so! We are so appreciative of the recognition, compassion and exceptional care they provide to our dogs every visit and the ongoing support we receive from OH Vet in general. Their personal approach truly sets them apart. Keep up the amazing work!”. Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. They started off with 4 staff and have now grown to 16 staff members and have definitely outgrown their previous premises. This is a wonderful achievement for a successful, local small business. Dancing for a Cause Local resident Rebecca Monin is preparing to put on her dancing shoes as a contestant in this year’s Stars of Parramatta – Dance for Cancer, a fundraising gala night taking place at Parramatta RSL on Saturday 27th July, raising funds for and supporting the Cancer Council. “My workplace was approached by the Cancer Council, asking for any interest. Several colleagues and I put our hands up and I was lucky enough to be asked to compete in Stars of Parramatta. “I thought it was a great opportunity to try and raise much needed money for the Cancer Council, while challenging and taking myself well and truly out of my comfort zone. Daunting yes but so far, a lot of fun. I’ve lost countless friends and family, including my beautiful mum to Cancer. I jumped at the chance to dance for Cancer and raise as much money as possible, in memory of all those we’ve lost from this awful disease” Rebecca told the Glenmore Gazette. Rebecca has been given the Jazz Foxtrot dance to perform in the competition. She has been having dance lessons at Arthur Murray Dance Studio in Parramatta with talented teachers Connor and Daniel, who are assisting with the choreography. She has also organised a Family Fun Night at Inflatable World in St Marys on Saturday 13th July from 5:00pm to 8:00pm. Entry will be $15 per person for three hours of inflatable fun. On the night will be a BBQ, cakes, slices and treats for sale for dessert and a raffle including prizes such as a night’s accommodation for two at the Parramatta Holiday Inn, Gold Class tickets, gift cards and more. The venue has been kindly donated for the event thanks to Keith from Inflatable World. Role Models Count Glenmore Park High School’s April Abela was amongst ten of NSW’s brightest science students who recently converged on Canberra to meet leading Australian scientists. The new STEM education initiative by the Australian Academy of Science saw the group of Year 12 HSC Science Extension students and their teachers attend the Academy’s annual showcase of science, Science at the Shine Dome, for the first time. “My experience of Science at the Shine Dome was completely invaluable – not only for purposes of my own academic growth – but also socially, and personally. Myself, and the other like-minded hopeful scientists undergoing the new NESA Extension Science course were exposed to real-life issues in Australian science communicated by world leading researchers” explained April. The Academy’s Secretary for Education and Public Awareness, Professor Hans Bachor, said picking only ten students from 67 applications was no easy task. “It was clear from their applications that this group of students were absolutely passionate about science. After spending three days with some of Australia’s top scientists, they left with plenty of inspiration” Professor Bachor said. “What young people see of STEM professionals shapes their beliefs and career aspirations. The Academy’s Women in STEM 10year plan published last month highlights the importance of role models”. The ten students and their teachers attended Science at the Shine Dome thanks to the generous support of the Academy’s STEM education partner 3M. It’s Australia Managing Director, Makoto Itoh, congratulated the Academy on creating a fantastic program to inspire Australia’s future scientists. “By providing equal opportunity to all NSW Science Extension students and including their science teachers, we’re creating a winning formula for success and the advancement of science in Australia” Mr Itoh said. “In future careers, these students could make their own scientific discoveries and apply them to solve some of life’s biggest problems. They could change the world—and that alone is worth its weight in gold”. “I would love to recognise the generosity of the Australian Academy of Science, my science teacher and mentor Mr. Ashley Mulcahy, the academy’s education team, as well as the extensive contribution made by sponsors 3M, without of which I would have never been able to attend. It was an experience I’ll never forget” completed April. U Student April Abela, astronaut Andy Thomas and teacher Ashley Mulcahy | Image: Australian Academy of Science

New Group for Carers in Glenmore Park Carers in the local community have something to look forward to, with a new support group starting recently in the area. Glenmore Park Carers has been formed by resident Vivienne Ross and meets weekly at the Coffee Club at Glenmore Park Town Centre. “I am a carer for my husband. During a recent chat with an old friend who is also a carer, we discussed that there didn’t seem to be many avenues for carers to get together in a social setting, just to show support for each other and to talk about things occurring in our daily lives. After that meeting, another friend said to me ‘Don’t forget about the carer’. That struck a chord with me and I decided that I could do something about it myself” explained Vivienne to the Glenmore Gazette. The group meet at the Coffee Club in Glenmore Park every Wednesday at 2:30pm. Look for the lady with the red balloon! The location was chosen as it is close to the pharmacy and adjoining shops and has easy access with the new carpark. Initially, they will be meeting for coffee and a chat, but Vivienne hopes that members will forge friendships that will lead to other activities like going to the movies, meeting up to walk the dog, swapping books and everyday events that can be shared. With the group’s first meeting only last month, they had four people join them and hope to expand on this in the future. “We welcome anyone who cares for a loved one or friend to join the group” ended Vivienne. If you would like more information about Glenmore Park Carers, you can contact them on 0404 836921. You can also find them on Facebook.

Post-Election Mood Moves Market

Since the somewhat surprising results of the Federal election, we have had a resurgence of buyer enquiries in the market. More vocal than in the previous 8 months, buyers are now increasing their activity and are ready to make their move. Traditionally, winter weather quiets the market, but with the Morrison government shelving reforms to negative gearing and capital gains tax, the market is once again heating up. Additionally, lowering interest rates and levelling property prices make this new investment season more attractive to buyers than it has been for some time. So how does this translate to potential sellers? We always remind vendors who are considering a mid-year sale to keep in mind the simple rule of supply and demand. It is a common misconception that a spring sale, when your garden is looking its most beautiful, is the prime time to sell your home. There are some properties where this does hold true, however, most homes can be sold yearround. This means that a winter sale, when there is lower housing supply, may increase demand from active buyers and create competition for your property. As a result, there is a greater probability of driving your property price upward. Closer to home, it is well worth noting the major road works underway in and around Penrith. There is no denying that Sydney’s second airport is making a mark on our city. This begs the question, what impact will this have our housing market? Have no doubt, savvy buyers will be aware of the future growth and will be eyeing our burgeoning market. Investment in growth corridors is a key component to successful property purchases and should bode well for vendors now and in the near future. With so much to consider, we invite you to contact one of our local area experts for free advice. But given the trifecta of low housing supply, increase in buyer interest, and infrastructure works in and around our area, we believe this is a winning time for a winter sale. Sharon Mudiman, Licensee and Principal of Bespoke Realty Group has been negotiating the sale of property for over twenty-five years in the Greater Penrith Region.

A Little Bit of Luxe Introducing Glenmore Park’s Belinda Soakai, the founder of Little Luxe Events. She is a wife, mother, party and Disney lover! After having two children in the past five years, she truly understands the value of creating memories that last a lifetime. At birthday celebrations, seeing a child’s face light up with a huge, excited smile is priceless. After being in the corporate industry for over 10 years, she decided to create a life involving her passion and her children. After starting a business course called ‘Lady Start’, Little Luxe was born – a party hire business that offers a range of unique props, some handmade and painted. “Amongst my family and friends, I have always been known to ‘go that extra bit further’ when it came to creating celebrations that people remember. I have always absolutely loved decorating and styling family events like birthdays, baby showers and Christmas parties. You name it, any celebration and I was keen to style it with that little bit of luxe” said Belinda. “One thing that I have noticed from experience with Little Luxe Events is that people walk into the celebration and immediately go ‘wow!’ or ‘look!’ – they don’t just walk in and look for a seat. Children, in particular, get excited when their party has something that is unique and represents their budding personality. Our mission is to help families create memories of celebrations that last long after the special day is over” she added. Although there are a number of prop hire services on the market, their point of difference is to offer pieces that will add a little bit of uniqueness to their client’s event. They work with their clients to best suit their needs and, at times, custom make props to suit their event. Their hire props are suitable for all ages and events. They have experience in a wide range of events, ranging from corporate office events to first birthdays at your local park. “We have had some fabulous opportunities, with our most recent one supplying a plinth for the Channel 10 hit television show “Dancing with the Stars”, which held the Grand Finale trophy” ended Belinda.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com Phil Nunn, an Australian psychologist, says that parenting is like having a rope around your waist. Parenting is all about knowing when to let the rope out and when to reel it in. I take this metaphor a little bit further. The rope around your waist is the relationship you have with your child. No rope = no relationship. Without a relationship there is no letting out and no reeling in. Your child is flailing about at the end of the rope without being hitched to something. That’s a dangerous and scary place for a child to be. In my experience most of these kids look angry. This anger masks hurt, all children want to feel connection and belonging with their primary caregivers. Without a strong and positive parent-child relationship, your child will not listen to you and will not do as you ask. It really is that simple. I believe that having a strong relationship with your child is the most important thing that you can do as a parent. I reckon that building relationship is about 80% of the parenting effort. So, if you are disciplining and punishing your children about 80% of the time, then think about taking an about-turn, and concentrate on relationship instead, and see how that changes things. So, how do you develop a positive relationship with your child? Hugs, touch, care, unconditional love, attention, spending time with them, descriptive praise, nurture, listening to them when they talk, are relationship builders. Things like putdowns, name calling, criticism, teasing, telling them that they are ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’, and swearing at your kids are relationship downers. The best-kept secret to parenting is to spend small amounts of time (a few minutes) regularly throughout the day with your child, especially if she asks for it. Spending small amounts of time listening to your child or supporting him is worth more to your child than spending a half day per week. If you are not doing anything super-important, stop to listen to them or look at what they want to show you. Top up their emotional cup as often as you can. If you are reading this, and you think that your relationship is not that great with your kids, and they are angry at you, not listening to you, and not doing as you ask, then it is not too late. It’s never too late to build a relationship with your child.

One Shell of a Story Amelia McInerney certainly knows how to make children laugh, with the talented author releasing her second children’s book, Bad Crab, this month. Bad Crab, published by Scholastic and launched late last month at The Children’s Bookshop in Beecroft, is a brand-new tale that comes hot off the heals of Amelia’s first book, The Book Chook, which was released in March this year. “It’s an almost-wordless picture book, illustrated by Philip Bunting (who shot to picture book fame in 2017 with his first book, Mopoke). It’s a fun, action-packed story that appeals to all ages as it reads like a comic book. Humour, high drama and a highly flawed main character afford the subtle exploration of the book’s themes: impulse control, consequences, empathy and making friends” explained Amelia. She recently attended the Children’s Book Council of Australia (CBCA) Conference ‘And Now They’re Laughing’ in Canberra, where Bad Crab was showcased on Scholastic’s trade table. Whilst there, Amelia met lots of teachers, teacher librarians and kidlit industry people and she also attended The Book Chook signings. The former Glenmore Park resident has had two more texts accepted for publication; another picture book with Scholastic (this will be her sixth picture book) and a comic-book style story for a funny middlegrade anthology, Funny Bones. This is due out in October with Allen and Unwin and all proceeds for this will go to War Child. “I’ve started visiting local schools, preschools and childcare centres to share my books and inspire kids to read and write” she added. The next time your child has Book Week at school, you very well may see a student dressed up as The Book Chook or Bad Crab, all thanks to Amelia’s amazing ability to make fun books for kids to read. “All my books are funny, which is a good thing it seems” smiled Amelia. HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Who needs to be careful when taking Acetaminophen (paracetamol)? My last article about acetaminophen described how this normally very safe drug may become toxic when taken at higher doses because under some circumstances, liver cells produce a toxic chemical called NAPQI from acetaminophen. Risk for acute liver failure, kidney or lung side effects associated with normal and excessive dose acetaminophen intake is markedly increased when acetaminophen is taken: 1. by people regularly consuming alcohol 2. with some medications 3. during fasting and malnutrition 4. by people over 40 also longer-term intake of just 3-4g paracetamol daily also increases such risk. Alcohol: drinking even moderate amounts (>2 standard drinks daily) of alcohol: 1. directly drains of cellular antioxidant stores 2. increases cell free radical production further decreasing antioxidant stores 3. increases CYP2E1 enzyme levels in liver cells increasing NAPQI production (10-30 fold) So, a moderately strong dose of paracetamol taken by a person who regularly consumes alcohol, may lead to liver cells producing toxic NAPQI levels under conditions of insufficient antioxidants (glutathione) to detoxify NAPQI. Excess NAPQI can lead to liver cell death. In alcoholics as little as 3-6g/day of paracetamol have led to

acute liver failure. Age: As people age liver size decreases & liver GSH production declines, making people over 40 less able to clear acetaminophen and deal with toxic NAPQI and at greater risk of poor outcomes. Fasting: produces deficiency of 3. co-substrates for safe acetaminophen detox pathways (sulfation/glucuronidation) 4. liver GSH (33% reduction) and increases 3. liver CYP2E1 levels (10-30 fold) and thus 4. NAPQI production & risk of liver toxicity Drugs & Chemicals: Many drugs and chemicals increase liver CYP2E1 levels and NAPQI production Schmidt and colleagues (2002) showed that in cases of paracetamol overdosing, concomitant overdosing with: 3. benzodiazepine drugs almost doubled the risk of hepatic encephalopathy and renal dysfunction 4. aspirin increased the risk of a. hepatic encephalopathy five-fold b. death or liver transplantation six-fold So, when you take acetaminophen for pain relief talk to your pharmacist or your doctor first so they can review how much you’re taking and minimise your risk of harm from this normally safe drug.

Come and Get Active

Active Glenmore Park is a local group that connects active men and women in Glenmore Park. People who like training, sports and getting active can link up with like-minded people and create group events. It could be anything from the gym, cycling, running, swimming and canyoning or sports such as football, soccer, basketball, golf and tennis. “My wife and I and my neighbours wanted to meet like-minded people in our community to join us doing fun, outdoorsy things. We started the group in April and already have 40 members said Danny Denver, Group Organiser. The group currently doesn’t have a regular meeting venue; however, they have been using the sporting fields at Mulgoa Rise for activities. “Glenmore Park is safe, clean and a great place to raise a family. It offers great convenience with plenty of things to do and explore. I feel it has a growing community spirit smiled Danny. If you would like to join Active Glenmore Park or would like to know more, you U Members of Active Glenmore Park | Image: Vinn can find them on Facebook. Belotti BUSINESS DIRECTORY

I recently enjoyed some time to travel, not to exotic destinations overseas or in luxurious beach stays in parts of our world that are warmer than home; but instead lovely little hidden gem communities, much like ours. What I discovered above all else, was that many of these amazing little towns had their own version of 'our community news'. We've all picked up the 'local rag' at one time or another when travelling, and like one of our readers recently described, it's like a well-worn pair of old slippers - familiar and 'ohhh so' homely. Here at the District Gazette 'We Live.Love. Local' and will continue our long tradition of bringing the latest local happenings right to your coffee table; like a warm embrace from an old friend. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Do good and good will come to you'
