Nepean Belle Wins Bride’s Choice Award Local Regentville icon, The Nepean Belle, has won the 2021 Western Sydney Bride’s Choice Award for Unique Wedding Venue. The prestigious awards took place at The William Inglis Hotel - MGallery by Sofitel at Warwick Farm last month. All venues that host weddings qualify for inclusion in the Bride’s Choice Awards. The Awards are advertised on Facebook and brides invited to vote. Owners Chris and Carol Bennett were humbled by the win. “Winning this award tells us that we are on the right track! We have a constant improvement program where we continually change, upgrade and try things to ensure that we do the best we possibly can for our bridal couples, as well as all of our passengers” explained Carol Bennett to the Glenmore Gazette. The Nepean Belle has been the recipient of numerous awards in her 39 years. Since purchasing the Belle in 2013, Chris and Carol have won the Bride’s Choice Award in 2018 and the Highly Commended Award in 2019. After having received TripAdvisor’s Certificate of Excellence for 4 consecutive years, they were also awarded TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice Award. This placed the Nepean Belle in the Top 10% of attractions worldwide! “In times of constant change, the Nepean Belle is a stalwart of the Penrith region. The Belle represents the real essence of Penrith she’s robust, dependable and has a commanding presence. The majority of our local community have a memory of the Belle, whether it was an engagement, a wedding or when they came for a cruise in their childhood! The Belle means something to everyone, and Chris and I are humbled to be a part of her history and story going forward,” said Carol. r Captain Chris and Carol Bennett, owners of the Nepean Belle Paddlewheeler | Image: Justin Sanson

WANTED Bingo/Promotions Assistant
A well established promotions company requires a versatile person to work in registered clubs in the metropolitan area. • The right person must be well presented and extremely reliable and able to converse with patrons. • Cash handling skills are a requirement. • You must be available to work days and nights. Some weekend work is also available. • You must have a reliable motor vehicle for transport. Glenmore Park’s Brent Farr is getting ready for the trip of a lifetime and will be participating in the 2021 Variety - The Children’s Charity B to B Bash Fundraiser early next month. The 2021 Variety - The Children’s Charity B to B Bash will begin on 1st of August and will wrap up on the 10th of August, covering a distance of 4,400kms. Starting at Sydney Zoo at Bungarribee, it will travel through towns such as Broken Hill, Bourke, Cunnamulla, Charleville, Roma and finish at Bakers Creek, Mackay in Queensland. Brent will be part of The Avengers alongside team members George Frilingos, Peter Frilingos, Arthur Frilingos and Mark Mahony. They will be running two cars – a 1971 ZD Ford Fairlane and a 1976 Ford F100. “I care deeply for this cause. My nephew has Cerebral Palsy and anything I can do to raise funds to help him and other kids in need is a pleasure. So, when I was asked to join the Avengers Team who have been doing this for many years, I was truly grateful” explained Brent. “This will be my 11th Variety Bash. I first got into it for fun and to raise money for a great cause. My first was in 2010 with Arthur, my brother. Once you are out there and you see and meet the kids and people in these rural communities, you’re hooked. It’s an amazing experience,” said Peter Frilingos. “I’m looking forward to seeing the direct impact of our fundraising efforts along the way being provided to children with a range of educational, health and mobility equipment given to local schools and organisations, as well as having fun. I drive for a living but look forward to this new challenge!” Brent smiled. “Over the years, there’s a lot of people that we’ve met and become close to. It’s like one big family. I enjoy catching up and sharing time with them. I’m lucky to have my father George and brother Arthur with us. Everyone you meet is there for the same reason” added Peter. If you would like to support The Avengers at the 2021 Variety - The Children’s Charity B to B Bash, you can donate at https:// fundraise.varietynswact.org.au/fundraisers/TheAvengers. They will also be holding a BBQ at Bunnings Penrith (Wolseley Street) on Saturday the 3rd of July. r The Avengers with the F100 | Image Supplied

Nepean Ducks Ready to Fly
want to play american football?
The Nepean Ducks are preparing to take flight, with the 2021 season kicking off on 14th August. The local gridiron club have begun preseason training on Mondays and Wednesdays from 7:30pm to 9:30pm at Cranebrook Park in preparation for a big year ahead. This year, there will be a Mens (18+) team, Colts (16-19) team and they are planning to submit a Womens (16+) team. Since forming in 2014, the Ducks have grown to be a strong club. Last year they had 50 Mens and 34 Colts players take the field. “Gridiron is an inclusive sport that has positions catered to all body types. The Ducks focus on the fundamentals of football and providing opportunities for all players to get on the field. Our club has a good sense of camaraderie and amazing club culture” said Glen Bowes and Darren White of the Nepean Ducks. What advice does the club have for anyone wanting to take up gridiron? “Our advice would be to come down and have a go. For most people it only takes one training session to get hooked on the sport and want to invest their time and energy into it”. The Nepean Ducks currently have positions available for all teams. The club also welcome any potential sponsors too. For more information, follow them on Facebook and Instagram @nepeanducks. If you have any questions, send them a message on either platform.

Local School’s Amazing Show of Support Glenmore Park Public School have celebrated their first fun run for the year, with the local community coming together to help the school raise over $30,000. The Colour Explosion Fun Run, which took place at the school recently, raised an amazing $36,324! The money will go towards fixed equipment for the students to enjoy in their playground. The successful event saw 670 students participate in the fun run alongside their classroom teachers. All staff got involved, including executive and office staff, teachers’ aides and their GA. The teachers dressed up in rainbow wigs, socks, and tutus. “We wanted to organise something fun for our students and the school community, after many school events in the last year had been cancelled due to COVID. It was also an opportunity to raise funds for our school” said Lauren Beard, Glenmore Park Public School Community Engagement Teacher and Colour Explosion Fun Run Organiser. A course was set up on the school oval with four colour spraying stations, obstacles including hurdles, army crawls and a water station. Students completed the fun run with a colour explosion under an inflatable finish sign, where they threw their own sachets of coloured powder up in the air. School Prefects had the opportunity to spray the teachers at the end of the event. “We would like to thank our generous families for their donations and participation in our first Colour Explosion Fun Run. This was our first event families could attend in over a year and we had an excellent turnout” ended Lauren. v [Top] Students after the Colour Explosion Fun Run [Below] Students receiving awards and prizes for their participation fundraising efforts. “Time In Versus Time Out”
Most of us would have heard of giving kids a ‘time out’ when they’ve done something wrong. You may have experienced sitting alone as a child, in some boring and bare corner of the room, waiting for a parent or teacher to allow you back. ‘Time out’ has been a staple of the child behaviour management tool kit for decades, but many are now asking- is there a better way? The logic behind ‘time out’ is that most kids hate it, so they will behave ‘well’ in order to avoid it. However, what we now know from decades of research into child development, is kids don’t usually set out to be ‘bad’. Often, kids do bad things when they are stressed out. This may be because they are tired or hungry, or they can’t solve an important problem. Recent advances in brain imaging have shown us that a spike in stress reduces functioning in key areas of the brain involved in thinking ahead and considering consequences. These same areas of the brain are already under development in children and teens. So, add a little too much stress, and you have a recipe for disaster! Kids are hard-wired to connect with the important big people in their life so they can survive until they are old enough to take care of themselves. When kids see us paying attention to them, and giving them care, they know they are safe. Safety creates calm, and calm brains can solve problems without hurting anyone or breaking anything. ‘Time in’ is a strategy that uses your relationship with your child to help them settle and think through the situation. What it looks like is taking your child somewhere safe, sitting down and chatting about what went wrong. It’s not about free passes for bad behaviour. It’s about understanding why the behaviour happened, and what can be learned- how can they manage this problem better in the future? It can also involve discussing ways to right the wrong, such as apologising to a hurt sibling or replacing something that was broken. r

Exciting Times for Glenmore Park High School Member for Mulgoa Tanya Davies recently visited Glenmore Park High School for the official sod turn to mark the beginning of construction work for the new performing arts and learning centre at the school. It will include a multipurpose performance hall with seating for over 400 students, a raised stage area with back-of-house holding rooms, stage rigging, theatre sound system, change rooms and stores and two flexible learning spaces. The new facility will benefit the schools linked with the Glenmore Park Learning Alliance (GPLA) including Regentville, Surveyors Creek, Glenmore Park, Wallacia, Mulgoa, Warragamba, Luddenham Public Schools and the wider Glenmore Park community. Mrs Davies said she is proud to be delivering on her election commitment for the Performing Arts and Learning Centre at Glenmore Park High School. “I am so thrilled to be here marking the start of construction for the new Performing Arts and Learning Centre at Glenmore Park High School” Mrs Davies said. “Facilities like these are the natural gathering point for students and staff, and they can also be a vital part of a thriving local school community. “This is a very important project for the local community, and I look forward to seeing the new facilities taking shape in the coming months” Mrs Davies said. Minister for Education Sarah Mitchell said she is glad to see this project progressing. “The Liberals & Nationals Government is delivering record funding in school infrastructure, and I am so pleased to see work start on the new facilities at Glenmore Park High School” Ms Mitchell said. The NSW Government is investing $7.9 billion over the next four years, continuing its program to deliver more than 215 new and upgraded schools to support communities across NSW. This is the largest investment in public education infrastructure in the history of NSW.

From Glenmore Park to Manly This year’s NRL Indigenous Round saw team’s adopt jerseys designed by Aboriginal Artists. For the Manly Sea Eagles, they have a local connection with Indigenous Artist Lee Hampton from Glenmore Park designing their jersey for the third year in a row. Through his business Koori Kicks Art, Lee has undertaken work amongst several hospitals across Sydney. It is here that he met Ricky Lyons, brother of Manly Sea Eagles Legend Cliff Lyons. “In 2019, Ricky rang me and asked if I would like to design Cliff Lyons jersey for Indigenous Round. I instantly agreed and then had a meeting with Ricky and Cliff about the design soon after” explained Lee to the Glenmore Gazette. The following year, Manly had another artist lined up for Indigenous Round but sadly she passed away before she could proceed with the job. “I received another call from Cliff Lyons asking if I could help them out but had a short turnaround of 10 days to complete the new design. I accepted and as I am always up for a challenge, spent many hours and late nights getting the work painted, scanned, and framed for the event. This set me up to lock in 2021 at the game in 2020, and so here we are, three years of an amazing experience,” said Lee. Lee’s artwork for the 2021 NRL Indigenous Round for the Manly Sea Eagles is titled ‘Warriors of Manly’. It represents the Origins of Manly, when Captain Arthur Phillip first sailed into Manly Cove and met with the local Indigenous people, “Gayamagal people”. “In the artwork itself, there is a sunrise bottom left with warriors standing under it. This represents the local Gayamagal people standing on the shores, waiting to meet Captain Phillip. Below this part is a section that contains blue and white. The blue is the ocean, the white is the Middens (a buildup of shells and bones scattered along the shorelines of the water edge which are usually found where the locals would frequent). The black lines leading into the sunrise represents the trails, travelled by the locals to trade with the English, and the hunting pathways they would use to travel from their villages to the shorelines to hunt and gather food” he said. “The Eagle rising from the earth represents both strength and being a fierce warrior, as well as the Manly Sea Eagles. They go into battle every week, looking to take down their prey. Both the Eagle and the Manly side show the same aggression in attack, with the reward being a victory” continued Lee. For more information about Lee’s artwork, visit www.facebook.com/koorikicksart or www.instagram.com/koori_kicks_art. r Warriors of Manly. Chronic Shoulder Pain – Cured By What You Eat?
Some people come to the clinic with what seems like a simple shoulder problem that should respond well to physical therapy, but then doesn’t. Ongoing shoulder pain may not be driven only by the original injury and on such occasions gut-derived autoimmune/inflammatory processes should be considered as a possible contributor. Recently a patient presented with two sore shoulders, brought on by workers comp pre-return to work shoulderstrength testing. Ultrasounds showed evidence of bursitis, slight shoulder tendons wear and tear, pain in the front of both shoulders; extremely limited range of motion - especially of the left. The patient received physical therapy for several weeks with minimal improvement. She was advised that the inflammatory processes in her shoulders may be being exacerbated by components in her diet. Initially, not keen to make suggested dietary changes and within one week, achieved almost full range of motion. Why might dietary change help sometimes? The patient history showed a previous but unrelated work injury requiring years of pain medication. Long term intake of such medications
may lead to compromised integrity (leakiness) of the intestinal lining. This allows immune stimulating proteins from foods such as grains and milk (even whole microbes) to leak across to where immune cells reside. Immune cells see such foreign proteins and microbes as signs of danger and become activated. They enter the blood stream, migrate to other sites of injury, and produce large amounts of inflammatory mediators that augment local inflammation increasing pain at those sites. For this client, her strenuous shoulder-strength tests likely caused some local injury. Once such local shoulder inflammation began, it attracted circulating and activated gut-derived immune cells. These cells then exacerbated the local shoulder inflammation and prevented the shoulder tissues from moving from the inflammatory phase into the repair and resolution phase of the healing process. In this case, dietary change likely reduced exposure of gut immune cells to immune stimulating proteins, resulting in a relatively quick reduction in shoulder pain. So, if you have unresolved shoulder (or neck) pain, among other causes, you may want to consider the impact of elements in your diet.

The ‘One-glass-bottle’ Universe
In the comedy film The God’s Must Be Crazy, a glass Coca-Cola bottle is thrown out of an aircraft by a pilot and found unbroken by Xi and his tribe isolated in the Kalahari Desert. They believe it to be a gift from the gods. But unlike other gifts, for example plants and animals, there is only one glass bottle. Conflict erupts as they vie for the bottle, causing such disharmony in the tribe that Xi sets out to return the bottle to the gods. In the same way western society, amidst incredible abundance, curiously structures its life as one big race in which individuals compete for the ‘one glass bottle’. We are told we must win, be noticed, have more, and look better than others to find the good life. We strive for it from dawn until dusk as if the pie is finite - if someone else gets a slice we might not. Ironically, this belies a sense of poverty as if living in a ‘one-glass-bottle universe’. In contrast, Jesus taught that the secret to finding the good life is to become different sorts of people. The sort not needing to win or be gratified sensually. The sort who are not insecure, competitive, or greedy. We experience peace and live lives of love when we are not burdened by and worried about getting to first place. This is because getting to the top has too much to prove, to protect, to do. The message of the Bible is that we do not live in a ‘one-glass-bottle universe’, but that God wants to show his generosity to all of us, and he wants us to show it to each other. When we can get away from ourselves long enough to see others and to show them acceptance and love, we are on the way to something much more powerful and liberating than getting hold of that ‘glass bottle.’

Stay Out of Harm this Winter With the temperatures dropping, Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) is strongly urging the community to stay out of harm this Winter by being home fire safe. There is a 10 per cent increase in the number of house fires during the cooler months with more fires in bedrooms and loungerooms due to heaters, electric blankets, and the like. In 2020, FRNSW attended 3,740 residential house fires. This year, it has already attended more than 1,270 residential house fires. Of these, seven have been preventable fatalities. FRNSW Commissioner Paul Baxter said it was vitally important for people to have a working smoke alarm in their home and to test it regularly. “Every year, approximately 20 people die in NSW from fires that could have been prevented,” he said. “Each death is a tragic loss for families, friends and the wider community. “Additionally, for each fire fatality, there are also hundreds more people who survive a fire but suffer life-changing health consequences. “A fire can take hold in just three minutes, filling your home with deadly smoke. “For less than the cost of a family takeaway dinner, you can install a smoke alarm which may just save your life and the lives of your loved ones. “Don’t become a statistic – stay out of harm and have a working smoke alarm this Winter.” FRNSW Commissioner Baxter said firefighters are committed to reducing the risk of home fires and to protecting the irreplaceable. “However, the best way to stay out of harm this Winter is to take measures to prevent a fire from occurring in the first instance,” he said.
FRNSW remind the community to: • keep looking when cooking • don’t overload power boards • keep everything a metre from the heater • never use wheat bags to warm your bed • check electric blankets for frayed cords and other damage • don’t use outdoor heating and cooking equipment inside the home as it can be fatal • have a Home Escape Plan Most importantly if a fire does occur, get out, stay out and call Triple Zero (000). True to form, COVID continues to keep us on our toes. With recent outbreaks across Sydney, we are reminded to stay vigilant. July is always a great month, not only is it the month I celebrate another year of memories and experiences I have gained along the way but it’s also a timely reminder that we’re ‘almost’ half way through Winter. Although I do love the opportunity to recharge during Winter. Life seems to slow down a little, allowing us some time to soak up the warmth of the heater, devour our favourite home-made soups and catch up on Netflix (am I right?). For the school parents out there, enjoy the school holidays, it won’t be long before they come to an end once and for all and you’ll be yearning for the ‘good old days’ to return. ‘Until it’s your turn, keep clapping for others!’ Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
