Lucky Gina Wins Hayman Island holiday
Glenmore Park resident Gina Pannone was thrilled to learn she was the lucky winner of the Hayman Island three-night holiday raffled and drawn at the Community Street Party at Mulgoa Rise on Sunday 14 April. Over 500 people entered the competition on the day. The Community Street Party, held to officially open Mulpha FKP’s newest residential estate, Mulgoa Rise, in Western Sydney, and to open the new builder’s display village on site, attracted more than 2000 people. Gina entered the competition at the Community Street Party, not imagining in her wildest dreams that she would be announced as the winner. “I attended the Street Party with my husband and children to enjoy all the festivities of the day. There was entertainment, live music and rides as well as lots of arts, crafts and food stalls,” she said.

From the Editor Brrr it sure is getting colder. If you’re anything like me, you have already resorted to switching your heaters on to remove that icy chill that hits in the late afternoons. This month we have included a feature on the gorgeous backdrop that surrounds us, “Discover Mulgoa Valley & Surrounds”. If you are not already familiar with all that’s on offer in our own backyard, I recommend you take a leisurely drive one Sunday and discover the beauty that’s within. Read all about it on pages 14 and 15. Winter is my favourite season of the year, I really do enjoy snuggling up in my winter pj’s, with my fluffy slippers and gown, enjoying delicious soups and casseroles. We have a fantastic winter warming recipe for you on page 11 and if you are that way inclined, don’t miss the MasterChef event hosted by Glenmore Park Anglican Church see page 4 for full details. Rug up, and enjoy this edition of your local news and remember to take life one day at a time and enjoy the journey.

CHRIST CHURCH @ THE COLLEGE
Rev Mark Bonnici • Christ Church @ The College • www.christchurchatthecollege.com.au
‘What on earth am I here for’ I remember a catalyst moment 25 years ago when God clearly revealed His purpose for my life. It was around the time when my son Ben died. He was three and a half and had given up the fight a few months before his fourth birthday to Neuroblastoma. I remember back to a moment when my brother and I were sitting in a park, reflecting on what had just happened, knowing that such a significant loss had changed us all forever. That day we had been awoken to the naked reality that life was just so fragile. That day we realized that death was our greatest enemy and we all needed saving from death. That day I was convinced that there was nothing more important in this life than to know Jesus Christ and His will for our lives, because Jesus alone had conquered the unconquerable death. God called me at some point during this time and I listened and so I made it my mission to share this news with as many as would listen. You will know when God calls you. Sometimes he places someone in your life at precisely the right time. Sometimes an event prompts you to question things about your life which then point to the big questions, ‘why am I here?’ or ‘what was I made for?’ Sometimes your life feels so empty or uncertain, you realize that God has been calling you for a long time but you were listening to too many other things. Sometimes life is so good yet it still doesn’t satisfy, which prompts you to listen with new ears to God’s still voice. The Bible says that when you have been called by God, you have been called according to his purpose and in the Letter to The Romans we are told that ‘We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to His purpose.”
6 June 2013 www.glenmoregazette.com.au
Your calling is far more significant than a career. When you understand your calling it’s going to give you incredible hope. When you know your calling you discover the incredible blessings that you’ve been missing out on. When you know why you are here, you can know where you’re going and what to do with your life. The best thing about your calling is that is a gift from God. You don’t earn it, You don’t deserve it, You don’t work for it, You don’t bargain for it and you don’t barter for it. It’s a gift of God’s grace, his present to you. When he created you he called you by grace. Galatians 1 says this, “God, by his grace through Christ, has called you to become his people.” Grace is undeserved kindness when God gives you what you need, not what you deserve. If we all got what we deserved we wouldn’t be here. Grace is the fact that God knows every dumb mistake you’re going to make in life and he still chose to create you. He knew all the times you were going to disobey him and he still chose to create you. God knew all the things you’ve done, even when you were thumbing your nose to him and rejecting him and he still had a purpose for your life. God continues to call you because he has a plan for your life and wants to reveal this to you today. The second best thing about God’s calling is that he has given us all such varied and different gifts within our purpose. The Bible uses the human body to describe how we are all involved in God’s plans for our lives. Just as an eye is different from an ear, which is different again to a hand or foot, so too all of us who have been called by God are given different kinds of gifts and callings (1 Cor 12:12-31). God is creative and wants to involve us warts and all in his plan for our world. Are you being called by God? Join us every Sunday morning at 9.30 am in the Lighthouse Theatre, Wentworth Road, Penrith Anglican College and discover, maybe for the very first time, what on earth you are here for. Bless you, Rev Mark Bonnici

To Fix or not to Fix We get asked all the time by clients whether they should Fix the interest on their home loan or not and our answer is always the same. “It depends”. If you want stability and certainty for a given length of time then a fixed rate is definitely the way to go. But if you’re looking to beat the Banks at their own game then you need to be careful. That being said fixed rates are now dipping well below 5% so now might be the right time to lock in a cracking rate. Just be aware that once you’re locked in you are “locked in” with the potential to incur heavy fees if you need to break the term for any reason. One thing is certain though, as soon as the Banks get the slightest hint of an interest rate rise these fixed rates will be gone in an instant.

COUNSELLING CORNER with Linda Cassell @ Psychology Works 4 All Phone 4773 3057 or 0421 507 191 email lindacassell@bigpond.com Regular exercise plays an important role in good mental health. Exercise benefits both the body and the mind. When we are active, our body produces chemicals called endorphins that help decrease stress and anxiety levels and keeps us happy. Exercising regularly helps us: • Sleep better • Increase self esteem • Maintain a healthy weight • Decrease stress and anxiety levels • Increase energy • Strengthens our bones. One of the world’s most distinguished psychologists Swedish Professor Orsen Carte, suggests that parents of high school students should seriously consider allowing their children to join a gym. His study found that gym work strengthens hearts and lungs. Importantly it also produces students who are more physically alert and therefore more engaged in their studies. Parents also reported that after their child became a regular at the gym, there was a dramatic improvement in their relationship with their child. Professor Carte suggests gym attendance is an essential study tool for senior students. It sounds like a win – win situation; your child will be healthier and happier and you can rejoice in the new improved relationship with your child. Happy Bench-pressing! Linda

Fr Robert Riedling • 34-38 William Howell Dr , Glenmore Park • Phone: 4737 9735
The Trinity: A Lived Mystery At the end of May Catholics all over the world celebrated Trinity Sunday or, to be more formal, the Feast of the Most Holy Trinity. This came on the first Sunday after the end of the great Easter Season which concluded with Pentecost where Christians remember the sending of the Holy Spirit upon the Apostles gathered in fear in a room in Jerusalem, not certain of what to expect after the crucifixion of Jesus. For Christians, regardless of whether they label themselves as Catholic, Orthodox or Protestant, belief in the Trinity is essential: one God, three Persons. Our Christian understanding of God as one differs from that of the two other great monotheistic religions, Islam and Judaism, who do not hold to a belief in the Trinity. Often we will hear people state that “It is unimportant, we all believe in the same God.” Whilst it is true to state that we all believe in the one and same God (since there is only one God to believe in!) we need to recognise that the one God these three great religions believe in is known with a unique perspective as far as Christian belief is concerned. If Christians therefore believe that God has a distinct trinitarian nature, a question worth asking is: how does this make the life of a Christian distinct from that of others whose belief in the nature of God is different? In other words, how does God as Trinity, (as opposed to a non-trinitarian God), impact the life of a Christian believer practically, as a lived experience? In the Trinity we see a wonderful example of perfect community: Father, Son and Holy Spirit as three but also inextricably one, a community of perfect love and harmony. If there is any tangible
way in which Christians live their faith in a distinctly trinitarian manner it is surely by their way of relating to one another. Christians are called to let the Spirit move them to reach out to one another (and others) in love and in doing so at least move some way toward imitating the perfect community found in the Trinity. Essentially, it boils down to Jesus’ great commandment of love. After all, Jesus knows about trinitarian living from pesonal experience! Each time Catholics and some other Christians make the sign of the cross and invoke the Trinity with that wonderful prayer, “In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit,” they are called to reflect on what that means for them as a people called to do more than simply invoke a formula. The Trinity is more than an academic or metaphysical concept, it tells Christians about the nature of the God they worship, the God who made all of us, the God who loves us and gives us the strength to share that love with others, the perfect love that is found in the community of Father, Son and Holy Spirit. Blessings and prayers, Fr Robert Riedling

ow often we take for granted what is in our own back yard. Situated just 10 short minutes from Glenmore Park is the picturesque Mulgoa Valley and surrounds. With its green rolling hills, uninterrupted stunning sceneries and friendly residents, it’s well worth the small trip to experience that ‘old fashioned country charm and service’. There’s no need for weekends away in the country, all you need to do is turn left at the roundabout as you are exiting Glenmore Park (or right depending on which way you are exiting). Mulgoa Valley is rich in Australian history. There’s Glenmore Heritage Valley, which was built in 1824 by Henry Cox, with a fantastic homestead and golf course. Mount Schoenstatt Conference and Retreat Centre is also the ideal place to get back in touch with nature. Not to mention the historical Fernhill, a magnificent and iconic 1700 acre property, in Mulgoa. Built in the 1830s, her sandstone mansion and surrounds certainly make her one of the grand old ladies of Australia’s leading country estates. Fernhill today offers a World Class Equestrian Centre and will play host to many iconic events, such as the recent Tough Mudder. Whilst visiting Mulgoa, be sure to experience the locally grown, fresh fruit and vegetables or enjoy some delicious treats from the bakery, where you will enjoy the true meaning of home-made. Perhaps you might like to gather some friends and enjoy ‘High Tea’ with breathtaking views, immerse yourself in the country life whilst sipping on the finest teas and eating from a delicious menu of homemade indulgences at Mulgoa Valley Receptions. You will definitely be returning for more! Heading towards rural Wallacia, you will find the historic Wallacia Hotel and Wallacia Golf Course. As many would recall, the town was also once home to Bullen’s Animal World, well known as a theme park and circus. You will find the region’s biggest tourist attraction in Warragamba, the Warragamba Dam. Built between 1948 and 1960, the dam provides Sydney with its water supply. The giant spillway is a majestic sight when the gates are opened. Be sure to pack a picnic, the gardens around Warragamba Dam are perfect for this. African Lion Safari also called the town home until 1991.The nearby community of Silverdale, which was first settled in 1828, has recently become a popular home for young families looking to leave the hustle and bustle of the city, when you experience the true beauty of its natural and idyllic setting, you too, will understand why. So remember, the next time you are looking for somewhere beautiful to visit, or if you are seeking some of that ‘oldfashioned’ service, discover what Mulgoa Valley and surrounds has to offer.

MULGOA VALLEY RECEPTIONS 1440 Mulgoa Road, Mulgoa NSW –A Proud Local History Glenmore Year 2013 marks the bicentenary of the first European crossing of the Blue Mountains. This
major historical milestone was celebrated by many proud citizens of the Penrith City during the month of May. After the successful crossing of the Blue Mountains by Blaxland, Lawson, and Wentworth in 1813, Governor Lachlan Macquarie commissioned then a Magistrate at the Hawkesbury William Cox in July 1814 to supervise the making of a road as surveyed by George Evans. Cox and thirty convicts made 163km road over the rugged mountains in about six months without serious accident or loss of life. The Cottage was the first substantial house to be built in Mulgoa area. It was built by William Cox, military officer and road builder, for the use of his three sons, George, Henry and Edward, in around 1811. Some time later each of William’s sons married and moved to his own estate, Winbourne for George, Glenmore for Henry and Edward for Fernhill. The building of Glenmore began by Henry Cox in 1824 and an ‘L’ shaped homestead was built first. The name Glenmore was suggested as it was the birthplace of Miss Frances Mackenzie’s in Scotland, and Mackenzie was Henry Cox’s wife. Glenmore had been a busy farming centre for many years, with grape vines, wheat, corn, alfalfa and all kinds of horse and cattle feed. Sheep roamed and flourished all around the homestead; the vineyards and orchards having low fences of stones as they had in Scotland. In well-preserved letters and diaries, we learn of happy social gatherings, picnics, weddings, children’s holidays, Christmas and Easter. There were always some visitors dropping in. Florence Nightingale on her only trip to Australia to lay the foundation of a Nursing Service in her tradition was said to have visited some of the Cox’s homes at Mulgoa. Later in the early 1850’s Henry Cox had his sheep transferred to a property he had purchased with the help of his banker father-in-law, at “Broombee” between Mudgee and Bathurst. By 1851 Glenmore was up for sale and the Cox moved to the western home. The third occupant of Glenmore was Mr James John Riley. Mr Riley was a great public figure. He was the means of creating a Shire Council and became the first Mayor of Penrith. His wife was formerly a Miss Blomfield of Denham Court, the beautifully restored house in Ingleburn. They, with their young family, were very happy and much loved by the Cox family, who visited back and forth. Glenmore was compared favourably with any property in NSW. The cereal crops, orchards and vineyards bore good harvests and the wine cellars were full. This period of prosperity gave Mr Riley the opportunity to add the south wing to Glenmore. His family crest is still to be seen in the coping in the front of the house. The courtyard and drive was widened and completed, the beautiful gardens surrounding the house were extended and embellished by the love and skill of the Riley ladies. James Riley died in 1882. His wife and daughters stayed at the house over twenty years or until they married. Mrs Riley died at the turn of the century. In the early part of the 1900’s two of the Misses Riley conducted a school for young ladies. They were beloved gentlewomen, renowned for their-kindness and good works. In May 1927 Glenmore opened its doors as a golf course and country club. It is the second oldest golf course in the west of Parramatta. A wonderful Sunday luncheon could be enjoyed for half a crown. The beautiful greens of the golf links surround the clubhouse and the cool tranquil interior and high ceilings all whisper of the past. The history of Glenmore Heritage Valley, re-named in 1993 after it underwent a complete redevelopment to current course design and became 27 hole championship standard golf course, is invaluable. The clubhouse and pro shop buildings are about 188 years old and is in great condition with a historic charm. – Source Glenmore Heritage Valley

Letter to the Editor...
Puppy PreSchool Puppies have a period of socialisation up to the age of 4 months old, during which time we encourage you to expose your puppy to as many new experiences as possible. But you must also protect them from exposure to disease. Puppy pre school is an excellent and safe way to provide this social contact for your puppy. • The aims of puppy pre school are: • To socialise puppies with other dogs and people. • To start basic obedience training. • To identify any potential behavioural problems early, so that measures can be introduced to modify that behaviour. • To educate owners on all aspects of puppy development, training and pet care. • To help make veterinary visits more enjoyable for dogs, owners and veterinary staff. To get puppies off to a good start so they become well controlled, well behaved and socially acceptable adults. To teach good manners to your puppy, so that you and your pet live happily ever after. We also offer a free puppy consultation with the veterinarian. Puppy pre school is run weekly at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, starting the first week of every month. Classes run once a week for 4 weeks, last approximately 1 hour each class and start at 7pm. Please call to book your puppy into the next Puppy Preschool Class. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.
Concerned Residents. Loud and Proud! We write with regard to two recently proposed developments. The first proposal is a 90 place Childcare Centre operating Monday to Saturday with a before and after school care and a Community Centre which has multiple proposed uses but could also be for functions. This proposed dwelling is on a quiet, narrow residential street with dual access from only one end. One of the concerns is the overflow of cars which would be parked in the street of parents taking their children to the childcare, possibly causing blockages for other cars to pass through. The other development is for a block of 63 1, 2, or 3 bedroom units four storey high with only 80 car spaces on the corner of Bradley Street and Glengarry Drive. This is the new entrance into Glenmore Park and Mulgoa Rise. Again one of the concerns is a lack of car spaces assigned, leading to overflow parking in two main busy roads, which may congest them causing hazards. If you would like to look further into this, their application numbers on the council website are DA13/0310 and DA13/0311. Furthermore you can register your interest for a petition against this at sadbangarry@ hotmail.com or join the group sadbangarry on Facebook.

Rock Of All Ages – For A Good Cause Dozens of singers and musicians performed at Kalinda Jade Studios’ annual “Rock of All Ages” concert held at St Marys Leagues Club in April. Kalinda Jade Studios used its 2013 concert to raise funds for The Luke Priddis Foundation which supports children with Autism Spectrum Disorders. Through ticket sales and a huge raffle – which included the major prize of an electric guitar – attendees of Kalinda Jade Studios’ concert raised just under $1000 for The Luke Priddis Foundation. Studio owner and music teacher, Kalinda Jade, said she was thrilled that the event raised so much money. “The Luke Priddis Foundation does fantastic work to improve and maximise the services and opportunities available to children with Autism Spectrum Disorders and their families,” she said. “We have students of all different ages with a variety of different needs and it was important to everyone at the studio that we make a contribution to an organisation that will have a direct impact on lives of many of the students and the families that attend our studio.” The full-house was impressed with the array of talent to take the stage. Students performed a range of musical styles using various instruments to keep the audience entertained. Everything from classical piano to beat-boxing was on show. As well as individual performances, two bands from Kalinda Jade Studios’ KJ ROCK program, ‘Deafening Riot’ and ‘Public Propaganda’, also performed. “All of our students worked really hard in the lead up to the big night,” said Kalinda. “So we thank our students, their families and all our helpers for making the concert such a huge success.” Prizes for the raffle were donated by local businesses: AMF Bowling Penrith, Guitar Factory Penrith, Krispy Kreme, Cath’s Cakes, St Marys Leagues Club, and Schmidty’s Catering at the Gaels, along with many personal donations made by members of the community. For more information about music tuition, please visit www.kalindajadestudios.com.au or look for Kalinda Jade Studios on Facebook. Every time we turn around, there seems to be a new fitness craze hitting the market. They all claim to have found the best fitness method for losing weight and getting into shape. The Boot Camp craze hit the Penrith area several years ago and despite a healthy amount of competition popping up; it still has no signs of going anywhere, anytime soon. Why? Quite simply, because it works! It’s one of the fastest ways to burn fat, tone up, increase energy levels and improve overall fitness. Boot Camps use a combination of functional strength training exercises, muscular endurance and cardiovascular training to maximise results. Programs are intense and challenging but suitable for all fitness levels. There is a real sense of community and team work amongst boot camp clients. They all encourage and support each other to reach their fitness goals. Come get involved guys... you won’t look back! Happy training!
