FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

Real Faith What is faith? What does it mean to have faith in God? Is it a “leap of faith”? Is it “blind faith”? Sometimes those who have Christian faith are thought to be irrational people compared to the more “sensible” people who have done away with such silly superstitions as “faith in God”. Yet, we all have “faith”. We have faith the sun will rise in the morning. We have faith our car will start when you turn the key ey in the ignition and we are disappointed if the car won’t start, t, because based on the evidence and facts, this is what we expect. Christian faith is no different. In the Bibles New Testament book of Hebrews, the writer tells us that our faith should be centred on Jesus; “Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfector of our faith, who for the joy set before him endured the cross, scorning its shame and sat down at the right hand of God.” When you look at Jesus’ life, he was perfectly trustworthy, always working for our good and never for our harm. Christian faith, rather than “a leap of blind faith”, is actually faith in the facts and evidence around the birth, life, death and resurrection of Jesus. Real faith is never blind; it is always focussed on Jesus. It has been the experience of Christian people for 2000 years who have found this confident faith, life transforming and life renewing. This continues to be the experience of the more than six or

seven hundred people who call Glenmore Park Anglican Church home. You too can know and experience the wonderful difference that faith in the living Jesus can make to your life. We would love tto see you so you can know this difference as well. ell.

Finesse Financial Advisers The NSW Liberals and Nationals are delivering even more for Western Sydney families, announcing plans for a new state-ofthe-art primary school at Glenmore Park. Premier Gladys Berejiklian, Education Minister Rob Stokes and Member for Mulgoa, Minister Tanya Davies recently visited the government owned site on Forestwood Drive that has been selected as the location for the new school. “The new school at Mulgoa Rise in Glenmore Park will expand our local school building program which includes major upgrades to Cecil Hills High School and Cecil Hills Public School, as well as the recently completed Fernhill School and upgrade of St Clair High School” Mrs Davies said. This project is in addition to the record $6 billion school building program already underway to deliver more than 170 new and upgraded schools across NSW. Ms Berejiklian said local families can look forward to their new air-conditioned school for up to 1000 students being delivered in 2023. “The new school will have outstanding modern facilities that will help arm students with the knowledge and skills they need for the jobs of the future” Ms Berejiklian said. “Glenmore Park is a vibrant and growing community, and this school will rapidly become a centrepiece for students, teachers and local families for years to come. Only the Liberals and Nationals can be trusted to get things done for NSW and build the infrastructure families across western Sydney deserve”. Mr Stokes congratulated Local Member Tanya Davies for delivering great outcomes for her community. “We are making the largest investment in public school infrastructure by any State Government in Australian history” Mr Stokes said. “This includes building new schools like this one at Glenmore Park and upgrading many of our existing schools to provide fantastic new facilities right across the State”. The NSW Liberals and Nationals have also committed an unprecedented $1.3 billion to eliminate the school maintenance backlog so that every public school in the State provides the world-class facilities that NSW students and teachers deserve.

Child Anxiety Is Increasing

Current estimates are that 10% of children suffer from anxiety. I think it is more, mainly because anxiety is frequently misunderstood by parents and teachers. Anxiety is often mislabelled as laziness, stubbornness, shyness, defiance, anger, etc, because it sometimes looks like those. It can also look like ADHD. I remember working with a family a few years ago. The child was extremely anxious. She would not go to the toilet or shower by herself in her own home. She would not do her homework. The parent said she was lazy. I asked ‘lazy or terrified?’ and the parent stopped in her tracks, and quietly said ‘terrified’. If your child’s anxious behaviours are disruptive and dysfunctional and limiting his/her quality of life, please get it treated. Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is regarded as the best treatment. Anxiety is a HUGE topic, but here are some tips for you… • Get it treated sooner rather than later. I prefer to see it treated by the age of 7 years. After that, the child starts to develop more fears and phobias and they pile up on top of each other. Untreated anxiety can lead to further and more severe mental health problems during adolescence and adulthood, and there is a greater risk of substance abuse. Western Sydney University has a low-cost psychology clinic. • Teach your child calming down skills such as deep belly breathing, positive self-talk, calming thoughts, and counting backwards. Practice calming down skills daily and reinforce the use of calming down skills. Hint – a calming down skill is portable and soothing - it is not patting a puppy (can’t take a puppy to school), going for a walk (can’t go for a walk whenever you feel like it), or punching a pillow (keeps you in ‘fight’ mode). • Pay attention to brave behaviours (rather than the anxious behaviours). • If your child has to go somewhere such as a school excursion or camp, work out a plan with him or her for anticipated anxious moments and which calming skills s/he can use to get through those moments. Let the teachers know about the plan so they can walk your child through it if your child is in a panic. Do not rescue your child, remind him/her of the plan – anxiety is a negative feedback loop, the more you rescue the worse it will get. • Role model calm. If you are anxious, your child will be anxious. I have some anxiety resources on the Hands, Hearts & Minds blog https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/anxietyresources/. U Image: www.pexels.com

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Paracetamol – Can it cause Gastrointestinal Symptoms? Last month I briefly cited at a nested case-control analysis done in 2001 looking at 2,105 cases of upper gastrointestinal complications (UGICs) and 11,500 controls. Patients were considered cases if they suffered a bleed/perforation in the stomach or duodenum or their clinical diagnosis was peptic ulcer, and the patient had been referred to a consultant or admitted to hospital. The study found that patients taking acetaminophen at doses: 1. less than 2000 mg daily had no increased risk of UGICs, while those taking, 2. greater than 2000 mg daily were 3.6 times more likely to have UGICs compared with non-users. The study also compared non-users & NSAID users (NSAIDs use carries known risk for gastrointestinal complications). Compared with non-users, NSAID use increased the relative risk of upper gastrointestinal complications: 1. 2.4 times for low/medium doses 2. 4.9 times for high doses 3. 3.1 times for short plasma half-life NSAIDs, 4. 4.5 times for long half-life NSAIDs, 5. 5.4 times for slow-release formulations. Thus, (in this study at least) there seems to be a real risk of upper gastrointestinal complications that comes with Acetaminophen use above 2000mg daily, and this risk is intermediate between the risk level from low/medium and high NSAID use. More importantly patients need to understand that if they take Acetaminophen > 2000mg daily with NSAIDs, these drugs may interact to increase risk of UGICs substantially. When compared with non-users of drugs in either group, the relative risk of UGICs was 13.2 times greater in patients who used both an NSAIDs and acetaminophen (2000 mg or more). This relative risk changed little (it increased slightly to 14.3) when the analysis was restricted to just patients with either osteoarthritis or rheumatoid arthritis. Conversely, when the acetaminophen dose was less than 2000mg per day, even with concurrent NSAID use, the relative risk of UGIC was 4.1 times that of control patients (taking no drugs). i.e. low dose acetaminophen, plus NSAID gave roughly the same risk as medium to high dose acetaminophen alone. According to Lewis (2002), although the above case control study has some limitations, the fact that ‘the risk of gastrointestinal toxicity was only observed among current users of acetaminophen’ and that, ‘there seemed to be a clear

dose response, with no increased risk of gastrointestinal toxicity at doses below 2000 mg/day’ suggests that findings may be legitimate. So how may an essentially very safe drug such as acetaminophen cause increased risk of UGICs at doses above 2000mg per day? Lewis states ‘In general, acetaminophen has been viewed as an analgesic and antipyretic compound without associated risk of upper gastrointestinal bleeding. However, at high concentrations, acetaminophen can also inhibit’ both COX 1 and 2 enzymes & thus ‘high doses of acetaminophen could also lead to peptic ulcer disease and upper gastrointestinal bleeding’. So why has much of the literature prior to this study found no gastrointestinal effects of acetaminophen intake? The Authors state that this ‘apparent paradox between our findings and’ most of the previous ‘clinical literature disappears when one takes into account that the majority of these [previous] studies included doses lower than 2,000 mg per day’ and were done using ‘healthy subjects’.

Penrith Anglican College Students Support Lions Two students of Penrith Anglican College at Orchard Hills are supporting the Emu Plains Lions Club in a non-traditional way. The two students, Mark Nielsen who writes a column for the Club’s monthly newsletter and Daena Madon who designed a new cover for the newsletter as well as fulfilling a role as a cadet journalist, are outstanding contributors according to Publicity Officer, Jim Devine. Mark’s current column is directed towards his initiative; KIDS HELP KIDS, a fundraiser for Westmead Hospital, by receiving a gold coin donation by students participating in wearing ‘crazy socks’ to school. Daena following her cover design for the February issue and article for Lions Xmas donations, is working on updating her newsletter cover and her newly assigned interview with the 2019 Penrith City Council Citizen of the Year … her Mum; Farah Madon! Emu Plains Lions are proud of these two students’ contributions and are thrilled about the future, with the younger ‘community servers’ coming through the Club. If you’re interested to help, contact Jim Devine on 0427 110061.

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

New Baby Boy for Rachel!! On Sunday 10th February 2019, our veterinary nurse, Rachel gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Both mum and bub are doing well.
