Neighbour Day - Connected People Connect Communities

DOGGY DAY CARE Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community, encouraging people to connect with their neighbours. Neighbours matter (whether near, far, or online), and now, more than ever, is the time to make creative connections and to stay connected. Neighbours can help and support each other in times of need, as we have seen during the numerous challenging times over the past year. A neighbour is also no longer necessarily defined by location alone and can be someone in your street, or the wider community, your workplace, or online. Maybe in Australia, or perhaps overseas. Neighbours are those in our geographical and selected communities that show they care and perhaps offer a hand when we need it most. Traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday in March annually, the theme for Neighbour Day 2021 is ‘Every day is neighbour day’. This year, they are encouraging Australians to help break down loneliness in our communities by building meaningful and sustainable social connections with the people around them. People experience loneliness across the age and social spectrum, including young people, people living with their families, and even people surrounded by others in the workplace. For Neighbour Day 2021 they are asking everyone to get creative, reach out, and to encourage social connection. Connected people connect communities. Neighbours connect and provide support to those living next door and to those further away. We have the capacity to build communities beyond our physical locations. This year, they want you to get creative and contribute to building and sustaining the communities we all need. Now is the perfect time to organise your ideas and plan your connection opportunities. If public health advice doesn’t permit traditional gatherings, then they encourage people to get creative and find alternative ways to reach out to your neighbours. Neighbour Day shares 50 #CreativeConnections tips on their website, with more ideas on social media to get your creative neighbourly ideas flowing. Everything you need to help organise your Neighbour Day event is now available on the neighbourday.org website. You can also connect with Neighbour Day via Facebook, Instagram, or Twitter to share your neighbourhood stories and creative plans. You can download the Neighbour Day campaign sign from the Neighbour Day website for selfies and post your neighbourly pics on your favourite social media platform. ®

Digital Photo Card Trial Goes Live in Penrith

Thousands of NSW Photo Card holders who live in the Penrith area can now download a digital version of their identification through the Service NSW app. Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello said that the Digital Driver Licence has been a resounding success and led to many customers requesting a Digital Photo Card. “This is another example of the NSW Government bolstering the Service NSW app to put customers first and make life easier for people” Mr Dominello said. “With a Digital Photo Card, as long as you have your phone, you always have your ID with you. It’s hassle free and only takes minutes to download”. The Digital Photo Card builds on the success of the Digital Driver Licence, which is now held by more than 2.4 million licence holders in NSW, representing 41 per cent of drivers. Close to 2,000 new users are adopting the technology each day, earning it a 95 per cent customer approval rating. There are more than 970,000 Digital Photo Card holders in NSW. Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said the trial will test the functionality and effectiveness of the Digital Photo Card ahead of a state-wide roll out. “The trial will allow Photo Card holders in the trial area to use their mobile device to enter licensed venues and transact with other businesses who check ID, such as hotels, major retailers, telcos, convenience stores, tobacco retailers and pharmacies” Mr Ayres said. “The Digital Photo Card is hosted securely on the Service NSW app, which is locked with a PIN. I encourage Penrith residents to give it a go and let us know what you think”. When a customer is issued their Photo Card or updates their details, they simply refresh the app for real-time updates, without having to wait for a plastic card to arrive in the post. The Digital Photo Card remains available offline if the card holder remains logged into the Service NSW app. The following postcodes are included in the trial – 2750, 2745, 2747, 2748, 2749, 2773. r

Telling Stories Through Art

Glenmore Park’s Karen Lee is an artist in demand. In just a few short years, the talented local Indigenous artist has had her artworks shown at exhibitions around the state and many of her amazing designs sold. Karen’s art career began 4 years ago, after she completed her arts degree. “I have always had a passion for creating art. As a young child, I loved to draw. I would spend hours drawing horses” smiled Karen. “I studied visual arts, design and technology and even a short interior design course. It wasn’t until later in my mid 30’s that I began a double arts degree and then started painting after this” she added. Prior to studying art, Karen was also a vocal teacher where she taught singing for three years. “I have an innate interest in history and ideas of memory and it’s connection to the past and it’s threads that connect to present and future. Combining this with a love of art, I thought it would be a great way to blend these interests” Karen explained. Karen’s vibrant artworks are inspired by our country’s natural landscapes with a contemporary use of Aboriginal cultures and traditional symbolism which she combines to tell her stories. “I paint abstract landscapes, Dreamtime Stories and contemporary pattern pieces that represent ambiguous ideas of connection and memory” said Karen to the Glenmore Gazette. “I am fortunate to have a professional career doing something

that I love where I can share beautiful culture” she ended. Karen Lee’s art is available to purchase through Black Door Gallery, Burrunju Art Gallery, Bluethumb (Australian online gallery) and soon, The Block Shop. To view her art, you can find her on Facebook @karenleeart and Instagram @karen_lee_artist. r Karen at her home studio in Glenmore Park | Image: Karen Lee

Born to Perform

Vocalist and pianist Alina Wakeling was born to perform. Taking to the stage for the first time at just 4 years of age, the accomplished musician is proving to be one of the hardest working local performers in the industry. A former Caroline Chisholm College student, Alina has already completed 12 years of piano and 15 years of dance training. Adding to this with further studies in musical theatre singing and music composition, she has a resume to rival any seasoned performer. “The musical exposure I had at my church, Corpus Christi Cranebrook, inspired and motivated me to start. Growing up, I used to listen to my Dad and my singing teacher, Sheridan, sing regularly at church. I was always eager to join in!” explained Alina to the District Gazette. Locally, Alina has performed at events such as Penrith Rotary Carols, Penrith Festival, Penrith Show, World Voice Day, and Penrith Relay for Life. She also regularly performs at weddings and funerals around Sydney. Some of Alina’s musical highlights in her career have included being a member of the Blue Mountains Musical Society, where she was cast and had roles in The Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story and Jesus Christ Superstar. In 2020, she performed as a soloist in ‘BMMS Online’, a live streamed musical theatre concert broadcasted to Sydney residents during the pandemic. “I love musical theatre, but I also love a good pop ballad! I was always inspired by Delta Goodrem and her influence is very apparent in the music I have composed over the years” she smiled. Away from performing, Alina splits her time teaching piano and singing. She has been a choir coach and movement teacher with the Nepean Valley Voices Children’s Choir. Whether it’s tutoring students at her private studio or at Caroline Chisholm College, she has a passion for sharing her love of music! Alina’s next challenge is to open a new teaching studio in Penrith. LEARN TO SWIM 4 MONTHS TO ADULTS

Do you have a child who is different? A quirky kid? He or she does things differently to other children? When does ‘quirky’ stop being an expression of the individual and an indication that some intervention is required? Those who could, would. So if children in general are able to draw at the age of four then your four year-old child should be able to draw, even if she isn’t that keen on it. If your 6 yearold child isn’t making friends when other 6 year-olds have fit in nicely and found a group of children he can relate to, then your child is experiencing some limitations in his social and emotional development. The labels don’t help – lazy, stubborn, aggressive, naughty, bad, stupid, a typical boy/girl, etc, – they get in the way of finding out what is really happening for your child. Is it a medical problem? A physical problem? A neurodevelopmental problem? I can’t tell you the number of times a parent has spoken in a parenting group about his/her child’s difficulties and the other parents have jumped in with solutions based on what they think the diagnosis could be. Or a well-meaning relative or friend has told a parent that she thinks her child has autism because she knows someone who has autism and they have tantrums just like that. Chances are your mother-in-law, friend, neighbour, or local shopkeeper is not qualified to make that call. NOTHING beats an assessment by a qualified professional. Start with a trip to your GP and keep asking questions until you are satisfied that your child is getting what they need. Quirky is absolutely fine, but if your child is limited in one or more areas of development (fine motor, gross motor, social, emotional, intellectual) it can lead to psychological or mental health problems later in childhood or during adolescence, and it’s often much easier to get help when a child is young rather than when the behaviours have become entrenched later. r

The Year of the Wombat Warragamba Wombats JRLFC is set to kick off the 2021 season stronger than ever. The club is continuing to receive new registrations, thanks to the booming communities around Silverdale, Mulgoa, Bringelly, Wallacia, Greendale and Luddenham. They are community-driven and dedicated to grassroots rugby league. Their sport is for boys and girls aged 5-16 years and they are pleased to announce the development of an Under 16’s Girls League Tag Team for the 2021 season! Their Club President, Jayne Parsons would like to encourage local girls in particular to sign up. Jayne said, “Rugby league is a great sport for young girls to be involved in. It’s a very controlled and safe game. Girls can play tackle from the age of 5 until the age of 12, before changing over to league tag through to the age of 16”. Players at the Wombats this year will be treated to a growing team of expertise to guide players. Royce Simmons, former NRL rugby league player and coach, will be working with the Under 16’s boys. Helping oversee the development of their youngest and newest players is local and PDHPE Teacher, Yvette Lapa. “As a Mum of 6 and 7 year old boys, I understand how important it is for parents to know their child in both having fun and playing their favourite game safely. Rugby league gives young children the perfect outlet for all that energy and we are working to channel that into something healthy and positive at the Wombats” she said. Active Kids vouchers can be used for your child’s registration. Each player will receive training shorts and shirt included in the registration fee thanks to their sponsors. Preschool and day care centres across the state can now improve their services, with more than $11 million in funding the NSW Government’s Quality Learning Environments (QLE) grants program. The QLE grants provide not-for-profit community and mobile preschools and not-for-profit long day care services across the State with funding of up to $15,000 to purchase resources and activities which improve physical or educational learning environments. Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies said the QLE grants are greatly welcomed in the community, especially after a tough year with drought, fire, and COVID-19 for early childhood services. The grants will fund improvements to physical spaces by enhancing the quality of the grounds and buildings. They can also be used to provide specialised educational programs for children to address identified educational needs. The local Mulgoa centres receiving funding are: - Erskine Park Children’s Centre who have been successful in accessing $15,000 to deliver a shade structure and fencing upgrade to their outdoor play area. - Cook Parade Children’s Centre received $14,880 that will assist in providing two shade structures. - Glenmore Park Child and Family Centre received $15,000 towards their playground refurbishment and upgrade. - Gumbirra Children’s Centre received $15,000 for the replacement of shade structures and the installation of artificial lawn. - Kindana Children’s centre received $15,000 that will install a new deck area and outdoor play equipment. - Stepping Stones Children’s Learning Centre were successful in accessing $13,097.72 for shade replacements, playground rectification work and an outdoor resource cubby house. - Strauss Road Children’s Centre were provided $15,000 for the replacement of their current shade structure and the installation of an additional structure. - Early Education & Care Centre – Cecil Hills has received $14,044.67 towards their Aboriginal Artist lead children’s workshop, Learning Landscape component of Indigenous inspired learning space and supporting sustainability practices with the installation of a rainwater tank. “Early childhood education is incredibly important, and these grants will help educators provide high quality learning environments for our children” Mrs Davies said. Light Beyond the COVID Shadow

Many people I talk to feel that their lives are somehow “on hold”. A shadow of uncertainty lingers over us. • What will happen workwise? • When can I travel to see my family? • Will it ever return to ‘normal’? • When can I get on with pursuing my goals and dreams? The Bible describes the Jesus Christ we celebrate at Easter as someone who brings God’s Light to us when we open our lives to Him. • When uncertainty surrounds our work, God says: “I will provide.” • Amidst our concern for our loved ones, God says: “I will care for them.” • When questions about the future swirl around us, God says: “Don’t be afraid, good will come.” • When our plans flounder and smashes our self-esteem, God says: “Lift up your head. You are of great value. I love you.” These words seem simple, but when the truth of them touches our spirit they have the power to change shadow into Light. Then we have Light to bring to those around us and the shadow will not get the better of us. I pray (and you can too) for God to shine His Light into the places of shadow in our lives. v

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.gpachurch.online Service Times: Sundays @ 9am, 10.45am and 5pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week. As I speak with people, one of the hardest things about the pandemic has been the mandatory mask wearing. While they are certainly needed during times like this, they aren’t normal. God made us for relationships with each other. Masks hide who we are. We can’t see a smile, we can’t see each other’s mouths as we speak and it is hard to recognise people. Masks just make relating with others so much harder. They often feel intrusive and uncomfortable. They have been important to ‘stop the spread’, but it’s so good when we don’t have to wear them. The truth is that God made us for relationships. It comes from the fact that God made us in his image. God’s character is to be completely loving and that has been the way from all eternity. However, it isn’t just that he made us for relationship with each other, he made us for relationship with him. Often it can feel that we hide from God, even ignore him. Despite this, he has loved us and wants us to have a relationship with him through Jesus. Every time I have had to put on a mask it has been a reminder to me that God made us for relationships with each other and him. This month, value the relationships you have with others and see how God made you for a relationship with him.

The Walk of Life A new walking group for women has launched in the local community, with Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk beginning in December last year. Meeting out the front of the Nepean Coffee Club at Tench Reserve every Wednesday from 6:00pm, the group has a coffee and a chat before they head off for the walk at 7:00pm. Together they follow the 6.5km Great River Walk along the picturesque Nepean River. Started by locals Angela Lambros and Jesseka Flakelar, the walk has seen new and returning walkers participating in the local initiative, growing to over 30 women each week. “We recognise the positive impact that the Penrith Men’s Walk and Talk have had on the community and we wanted to create a similar safe space to reignite social connection and empower women to build each other up. “As we both work in the mental health industry, we are passionate about starting conversations around mental health and normalising these experiences. We see the value in social connections as a way to support mental wellness and improving our physical health is a nice bonus!” said Angela Lambros of Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk. The group allows for physical, mental, and social connections through exercise to its members. They hope to grow and continue this important program into the future. “Our plan is to connect to as many women as possible, as this initiative is saving lives and we couldn’t be happier to see women coming together. Our hope is to connect women to one another and to the supports available within our amazing community” explained Angela and Jesseka to the District Gazette. They can be found on Facebook and Instagram at Penrith Women’s Walk and Talk or contacted via email on penrithwomenwalkandtalk@hotmail.com.

A Safer Space for Dogs to Play It began as a dream over a year ago and is now a reality, with local Tracey Horey launching Sniffspace, Australia’s only directory of privately-owned, secure off-leash spaces for dogs and their owners, last month. Tracey’s motivation to create Sniffspace came from her own personal experiences with Rafferty, her Kelpie X rescue dog. “I rescued Rafferty when he was 4 months old. He had been dumped outside a country pound when he was 2 months old. He is my life and I love him to bits. We do obedience and agility, and he is great with everyone he knows, but is very wary and scared of strange dogs and people” explained Tracey to the District Gazette. “Rafferty isn’t suited to busy dog parks, but he does need to get out and about and enjoy some off-leash time. Time in different environments is hugely important to a dog’s mental health” she added. Tracey and her team would one day like to see secure Sniffspaces all over Australia. No matter where you live, travel or holiday they hope that there will be secure spaces for our fur babies to have a run in and enjoy. “We hope this gives the off-leash dogs and their owners alternatives to the sometimes-volatile environment of a dog park or having them leashed at all times at local parks (and there are now many in other states where dogs are prohibited completely now). This gives them a safer space to play, hence improving their mental health and safety. “It will provide an outlet for all those people that are now getting dogs in apartments or on much smaller blocks. We also hope to be able to provide more spaces for dog trainers and dogs and their select friends in the future with multi-dog bookings” said Tracey. For more information or to get involved, visit www.sniffspace.com.au. r

HEALTH MATTERS

Could Your Back Issues be Bowel Issues? This article was inspired by a number of recent clients seen at the clinic with back pain that did not respond well to normal muscle elongation therapy. Although scans showed vertebral and discal issues, which may have been the source of these patients’ pain, client histories reported history of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), with conventional IBD medication. IBD includes two separate but similar diseases - ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease. One could ask whether the patient’s back pain might be due to: 1. IBD related inflammation 2. Or more conventional vertebral/discal issues plus resultant nerve pain and muscle spasm? The short answer is, it could be one, the other, or both. In Australia 80,000 people live with IBD. Medically, ‘association between ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease’… with spinal-pain and ‘inflammatory back pain (IBP)’ is ‘well described’ and ‘seen in ~25% of people’ with IBD. Anatomically, the bowel is close to the lumbar vertebrae allowing bowel inflammatory-processes to “spill-over” into these neighbouring tissues. Since not all people with IBD have chronic back pain, any

14 March 2021 www.glenmoregazette.com.au

back pain experienced by IBD patients might primarily be due to their specific combination of spinal-structural-issues, and/or any associated muscle spasms, inflammation and nerve-pain, with these symptoms originating from and being limited to the nerves, muscles and connective tissue of the lower back, plus any areas serviced by affected nerves (think sciatica). If this is the case 2-3 sessions of muscle elongation therapy should result in significant reduction in: 1. back pain and paraesthesias, 2. restriction of movement If IBD-related-inflammation is the major back-pain cause, treatment-progress will be minor and dietary change should be considered. A recent intervention study concluded that adopting the Mediterranean diet ‘was associated with spontaneous improvement of disease activity and inflammatory markers’ in both ‘Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis’. Once IBD related inflammatory processes subside, back-pain symptoms may reduce also, and non-IBD related symptoms may be more amenable to muscle elongation therapy. If you have IBD or related back pain, why not call us at the clinic to discuss dietary intervention.

Beautiful Cat with 3 Kittens! On 8th January 2021 we had a beautiful stray cat brought in that was pregnant. Unfortunately, she had no microchip. We informed the pound and the other veterinary hospitals in the area of the stray cat, but we could not find an owner. We could have sent her to the pound to be rehomed, but there are already too many cats at the pound, and being pregnant, we wanted to provide a safe environment for her and the soon to be kittens. She is such a nice smoochy cat, that loves attention, so she became one of our adoption cats. She gained 0.6kg in 3 weeks and her belly was growing every day. On 1st February 2021, she passed 1 dead kitten. We elected to perform a caesarian and desex her to ensure the other kittens had the best chance of survival. She now has 3 tiny little kittens to look after. They are so cute! Mum is doing well and she spends all day feeding the 3 kittens. Such a good mum! We will be posting updates on Facebook on the kittens each week. It will be so much fun to see how much they grow each week! The mum and the 3 kittens are available to purchase through our cat adoption program. They will be wormed every week and vaccinated at 8 weeks of age. The kittens will require a 2nd vaccination 3-4 weeks after the first vaccine, then due yearly. The kittens will be desexed before finding their forever home. Please call 02 4736 2027 to enquire about the mum and the kittens for adoption. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. THE LAST WORD

Emergency Services

Here we are into March already, as we wave goodbye to Summer and welcome Autumn. The warmer weather will slowly be replaced with cooler temperatures and the once lush foliage of our gardens and trees will change. As we start to adjust to the new normal, there is some promising news with vaccines for COVID-19 soon to be rolled out in Australia. Many of us have now returned to our offices as zoom meetings are replaced by face-to-face meetings. There is a strong sense of community and positivity everywhere you go as things begin to look up once again for us all. This month we meet some truly amazing people with stories about our local heroes. They are people who go above and beyond the call of duty, enriching our lives and communities. ‘Fill your life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show’. Enjoy Your Community News.
