Morales Family Kicking Goals It’s not often you find a family of three who are all talented and excel in sport, but that’s just what you’ll find with Glenmore Park siblings Julia, Javier and Alicia Morales, who are all making a name for themselves in the sport of soccer. Julia is currently playing for Marconi in the Under 17’s NPL2 Competition and has just finished playing for the Raiders Futsal Club in the Under 15’s NPL2 Futsal Competition. Younger brother Javier trialled for Parramatta FC and was selected in the Under 12’s Boys SAP Team, whilst younger sister Alicia plays for Marconi in the Under 10 Girls SAP Team. Mamre Anglican School student Julia was recently nominated by her school to star in an NRMA commercial with the Western Sydney Wanderers players from the A-League and W-League. In between her representative teams, she also plays both indoor and outdoor soccer for her school. Javier has also proven to be a double threat just like his sister Julia, having been selected to play in the Mamre Anglican School Futsal Team this year, despite not playing the sport before. Alicia played soccer for Glenmore Park FC last season, before she was asked to trial and was selected for Marconi  L-R: Alicia, Javier and Julia Morales |Image Supplied

Getting the Right Information We know it is important to get good information in life, even on basic things like which milk to drink or if you should even drink milk at all! We spend hours deciding which car to buy or which school to send our kids, but I wonder, how much time do we spend thinking about Jesus; who he was and what he came to do. Immediately, some will say, “Doesn’t matter” or “Who cares”, but here’s the thing, Jesus said that what you think about him, determines where we spend eternity. That is a BIG thought! But is Jesus right? Is he wrong? How do you know? Jesus also claimed that by putting into practice what he says, that you will actually be living the best life. Again, is he right? There are big questions, big issues that Jesus brings to the table. Jesus is the man you can’t ignore. A favourite Bible verse of mine is from the book of John; “These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we love to introduce people

to the real Jesus. The real Jesus, who lived, died, who rose again and who calls you and me to follow him, so we may know and experience this real life. Each Sunday at our 4 services (8.30; 10:15; 5 & 7 pm) and in our groups throughout the week, we spend time getting to know this real Jesus who has transformed the lives of hundreds of people in Glenmore Park and the surrounding suburbs. We’d love you to join us! Or join us at “Christianity Explained” which answers all these questions and more, Sundays at 5pm for 4 weeks starting 20th May. You are also invited to some other special things coming up at Glenmore Park Anglican Church, your local Church... • Celebrate Mother’s Day, Sunday May 13th at our 4 Sunday Services. • “The Marriage Course” – Making good marriage better. Monday Nights for 7 weeks starting 14th May Want to find out more? Check us out on Facebook, online or give me a call on 4733 1635.

Hoping in Something The reality we can all point to in our own lives in some way or other is that life can be tough. And in our search for a good life, it is also true that we can live a better life amidst what is tough, if we hope in something. Scientists did an experiment placing two rats in separate beakers filled with water. They completely covered one beaker placing the rat (trying to stay above the water) in complete darkness. The other beaker was also placed in darkness, except for a pin-prick at the top letting in a dot of light. What do you think happened? The rat in the beaker with the dot of light swam for 6 hours longer than the other. This is the power of hope. My high school principal fare-welled our year 12 leaving class with the words: “Always have something to look forward to.” This carries a similar idea – that the human soul functions better when it has the expectation that good is coming. A friend recently broke up with her partner after a one-year

2 May 2018

www.glenmoregazette.com.au

relationship. When I asked what happened, she replied, “He just seemed to cover everything over with work and alcohol as if he was escaping from life rather than trying to live it.” Hope is like fuel in the human soul, powering it to live, to laugh, and to love even when it is tough-going. It helps us at least to try! And if we look for what is good we will most likely find it. We can, of course, hope in the wrong things. They are “wrong” because they can’t help us when things get tough or darkness lurks in our souls. The Bible teaches that when we hope in Jesus Christ he shines like a Light in our souls, illuminating the way to what is good. Jesus can bring good amidst everything that is tough about human life, and even death itself. Where have you placed your hope? Go well, Paul

Lions March into Coles for Army In a first for the Lions Club of Emu Plains, and in conjunction with the new Coles store at Glenmore Park Town Centre, shoppers were provided with an opportunity to support the Salvation Army in providing food to those less fortunate in our community at Easter. Lions asked Coles shoppers to buy an extra can, packet, jar or bottle of non-perishable food from their normal shopping list and place the ‘additional’ item or items, in the designated Lions trolleys. Lions collected all the donated food and passed it on to the Salvation Army in Luttrell Street, Glenmore Park. The Salvation Army will, in due course, provide the donated goods to their various programs including Homelessness, Youth Services and other community needs. Major Gary Smith of the Salvation Army, Glenmore Park, commented “It is heartwarming to see both corporate and volunteer services working together, and we thank both parties for their efforts in this project”. The genuine community effort was thanks to Brent Mattingly, Store Manager at Coles Glenmore Park, Emu Plains Lions and the Salvos and ran for 3 days and yielded 11 shopping trolleys full, with an estimated value of $4,000. Emu Lions President, Alan Cooper, commented “The shoppers at Coles Glenmore Park, were eager to help the Salvo’s especially at Easter”. Signage was kindly provided by Click Media, Penrith.

NSAIDS - How Do They Alleviate Acute Pain? First let’s define acute pain vs chronic pain to see how they differ. The Mount Sinai Journal of Medicine states that acute pain: 1. Is produced by a specific disease or injury 2. Serves a useful biologic purpose (to warn the body that something isn’t right) 3. Is associated with skeletal muscle spasm and sympathetic nervous system activation 4. Is self-limited (stops after the cause is removed and healing has taken place) They have a lengthy definition of chronic pain. Put simply however, ‘chronic pain’ is pain that started but, after an abnormally long time, hasn’t stopped. Interestingly they say ‘chronic pain serves no biologic purpose’ - obviously untrue. Chronic pain serves to tell the sufferer that damage is ongoing & that the cause still needs fixing. So how are NSAIDs valuable in acute pain? Last month we saw how, after damage, a good number of compounds are made by body cells at or near the site of injury. These compounds are released into the surrounds and into the blood stream as a signal to immune and other cells to come in to fight bugs that may be involved, clean up damaged cells & tissue materials, and then enact repairs to the area. One can think of tissue damage being the start-up of (not just one but) many-many giant & complex domino cascades – all at the same time. In technical terms these are known as inflammatory ‘signal cascades’. While damage continues, damage signal

cascades will continue to be started, until eventually (hopefully) the cause of the damage has been eliminated and all damage signals stop. At this point, cells release different compounds that start different cascades that now promote repair. Healing then commences, tissue is repaired & function begins to return to normal. In simple terms, the inflammatory cascade aims to remove the cause of damage first, while aiding mess-clean-up. The inflammatory cascade itself then kick starts the antiinflammatory cascade which aims to repair tissue, returning it to normal function. Pain follows the same format. It begins at or soon after injury triggered by the damage signals, continues during clean-up & repair processes, finally subsiding once healing is complete. NSAIDs do two main things: 1. They prevent the start-up of one major arm of the inflammatory cascade i.e. they stop production of pro inflammatory prostaglandins - chemicals that increase pain 2. They kick-start immediate production of antiinflammatory prostaglandins to lower pain NSAIDs chemicals do this by attaching themselves to enzymes called cyclooxygenase (COX for short). Once attached to an NSAID, a COX enzyme, stops making pro inflammatory prostaglandins & starts making anti-inflammatory prostaglandins instead. This strategy often works very well short term. Next month we’ll see why long-term‌ things aren’t so simple.

Keep Hydrated With New Water Refill Stations

Tanya Davies

New water refill stations have been installed across the Penrith local government area in partnership with Sydney Water to make it easier for the community to access clean drinking water in public places, and to reduce the use of plastic bottles. Council is encouraging people to stay hydrated, especially on hot days, and refill their water bottles with fresh tap water at the new water refill stations. The stations are located at Jamison Park, Penrith, Ched Towns Reserve, Glenmore Park, Werrington Lakes, Victoria Park, St Marys and Duke’s Oval, Emu Plains. The Mayor, Councillor John Thain said this is a great initiative to encourage people to avoid bottled water by using their own refillable bottles. “The water stations will provide a convenient and safe source of water for people when they are out and about as well as helping our local environment. Already Council has received some really positive comments from users of these valuable new assets for our community”, Councillor Thain said. Sydney Water removes over one million plastic bottles from waterways each year across their area of operations. Kelly Climo, Senior Marketing Advisor at Sydney Water said, “We are delighted to be partnering with Penrith City Council to provide the community with high quality drinking water in convenient locations.” “We have some of the best drinking water in the world and it’s already filtered by Sydney Water.” The water refill stations are easy to use and also offer options to drink directly from the station, or to fill your water bottle. They also provide a dog bowl so that your furry friend can grab a drink too.

Classes held on Tuesday evenings at Surveyors Creek Public School and Thursday evenings at Glenmore Park Public School Age graded classes from 4-years-old to adults The first class is complimentary

PARENTS CORNER Guest article by Professor Matt Sanders Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. For more information go to www. triplep-parenting.net or http://www.nepeancommunity. org.au/service_category/parenting-programs/

Homework Habits Homework is an accepted part of every child’s schooling. However, it doesn’t have to become a family battle. The key is for parents and children to be prepared. Your child should have a set, regular time for homework that fits in around your schedule and your child’s other commitments such as sport or music lessons. Homework should come at a time after your child has had a chance to relax after arriving home and before they are allowed to play or watch television. Relaxing immediately after school is as important for children as it is for adults who want to wind down after coming home from work. Give your child an afternoon snack and use that time to find out what their homework tasks are, whether they need any special materials for projects, and when it needs to be ready. While children don’t have to have absolute quiet when working, they should have a homework area that has clear table space, is well lit, and is free from obvious distractions (like the television). If your child wants your opinion on how good their homework is don’t feel that you have to make sure the work is perfect before they hand it in. They may feel discouraged if you point out all the spelling and punctuation mistakes. Instead, say something positive about the work and, if you must make corrections, just choose one or two mistakes.

GAME REVIEW

MARIO KART 8 DELUXE!

Mario Kart 8 Deluxe is the expanded version of Mario Kart 8. There are 43 different characters such as Mario, Luigi, Peach and Yoshi. In Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, there are battle modes that consist of 5 mini games. They are balloon battle, renegade roundup, bob-omb blast, coin runners and shine thief. Balloon battle: You have 5 balloons to start off with and the aim of the game is to throw power-ups at your opponents to pop their balloons. Renegade roundup: There are two teams, cops and renegades (robbers). The cop’s job is to catch all the renegades with piranha plants and throw them into jail before the time runs out and the renegade’s job is to escape the clutches of the cops. Bob-omb blast: This is the same as balloon battle, but instead of throwing power-ups you throw bombs! Coin runners: You collect as many coins as possible before time runs out. Shine thief: There is a shine in the middle of the course and you must steal it for exactly 20 seconds to win. There are 23 different power-ups, such as the green shell, triple green shell, red shell, triple red shell and the crazy 8. Another fun mode is grand prix, where you can choose 50cc, 100cc, 150cc, mirror (which is the track backwards) and 200cc. There are 8 different cups, all consisting of 4 races. Once you choose 1, you race in the 4 races. At the end of each race, you receive points between 1 - 15 points, depending on your ranking. I recommend this game to anyone over the age of 4. I rate this game 10 out if 10 (only available on the Nintendo Switch).

Families and their beloved fur babies will join thousands of people all across Australia as we walk together to fight animal cruelty. The RSPCA Million Paws Walk will take place in over 17 different locations across New South Wales in 2018, on Sunday 20 May. The Blue Mountains RSPCA Million Paws Walk will be held at Melrose Park, Katoomba. Registration on the day starts at 9am. The Million Paws Walk is RSPCA NSW’s largest annual event, where 100 per cent of funds raised by participant fundraising, event activities, donations and merchandise sales go directly towards helping animals in need. Funds raised will help care for the more than 33,000 animals who enter RSPCA NSW shelters every year after being abandoned, neglected or surrendered. Your hardearned fundraising will also be put towards keeping the inspectors on the road and making sure they can continue their education and community support programs. So, put on your walking shoes and come down for a day of fun activities, competitions, food, new friends, and of course, a great walk! Even if you don’t have a pooch of your own, we guarantee there will be plenty for you to play with on the day. What better way to spend a Sunday than having fun, hanging out with thousands of dogs and helping animals? Register your attendance and book tickets online at www.millionpawswalk.com.au. Check out our website for more information www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.

Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday 13th May

Dear 4 Legged Mum’s, I thank you for the food you bring, and for the little squeaky thing. You make sure someone is home each day, even when you are away. Thank you for my daily plays and allowing me a lazy day. You always bring home things to chew, I am so sorry about your Jimmy Choo. You brush my fur and fluff my bed, and even let me sleep up near your head. You’re my mum in every way, have a joyful Mothers Day! Love from

History Made for Local Cricket Club Glenmore Park Cricket Club had some exciting news this season, with the first ever girl’s only team, the Under 13’s, competing for the club in the local competition. “This year, we had our first girl’s only team and it marked an increase in the number of girl players for our club. For many of the girls, this was an opportunity for them to play social competition cricket for the first time”, said Grant Kean, Junior Secretary of Glenmore Park Cricket Club. “They got to make new sporting friends, experienced winning a match, wore coloured cricket uniforms and had loads of laughs whilst bettering their skills” he added. The growth of girl’s cricket is a key initiative of Cricket Australia at present, with money being invested into increasing participation numbers. The recent success of the BBL and WBBL have also added to the appeal of the sport at grassroots level. Grant explained that presenting a girl’s only competition in a “fun, colourful and social setting makes this more appealing”. It is hoped that the success of the Under 13’s team this year will increase the number of girl players for next season. The club plans to have a minimum two girl’s only teams for Season 2018/19. If you would like to get involved with the Glenmore Park Cricket Club, you can contact them and stay up to date with developments via their Facebook page (gpcricket) or by visiting their website/app at www.gpcricket.com.au.  The Glenmore Park Cricket Club U13 Girls | Image Supplied by Glenmore Park Cricket Club

THE LAST WORD And there you have it, almost 5 months tucked away 'just like that'. We enter this month with Mothers Day serving as a reminder to make magical the moments we have with our Mums, our Nan's, our Grandma's and all those wonderfully positive and inspiring role models that help us through this journey called 'life'. And for those gone too soon, your memories live on each minute, each moment, each day. On page 8 we have included one of my longtime favourite recipes, with Lemonade Scones you cannot go wrong. The ideal treat to dish up this Mother’s Day to help any budding cook stand out as a seasoned chef. We welcome Flynn as our budding Gazette Cadet this month, he’ll be providing all sorts of exciting reviews and write ups that will encourage kids wide and far to put down their devices briefly and enjoy some ‘time to read’. Now, it's time to put your feet up, make a cuppa and enjoy this jam-packed edition of 'Your Community News' "Inhale the future, exhale the past."
