Mother’s Day

Life; What is it About? Recently some Senior High School students were surveyed and asked the question, “Have you ever thought about the meaning of life?” While most of them had thought about this, almost half felt that life was meaningless, that it had no purpose. That is terribly sad, that so many young people felt so despairing about life. Yet, it is probably no surprise. As we look around, we can see plenty of reasons why people feel this way; institution after institution has let us down; our banks, our politicians, our leaders. Even our heroes have fallen short. What do you think is the meaning of life? Is life just work, study, school, sport, cooking, cleaning, and mowing the lawns? Is that all there is? Is there something more? Beginning in the month of May, on Sundays at Glenmore Park Anglican Church we’ll kick off a series “What is God’s purpose for your life?” In the Bible’s book, Philippians, the Apostle Paul wrote, “I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him.” Paul was convinced; the meaning of life is found in knowing Jesus. And this is not just knowing about him but knowing him personally; knowing him in a way that caused Paul to commit his life to him. We have been created with a purpose – to have friendship with God; to know his Son Jesus, and to enjoy life with him, now and forever. My prayer is that you would be encouraged to join us on Sundays for this series with the many other people who call Glenmore Park Anglican Church home, and that in knowing Jesus you too would find meaning in your life. PS: Also join us on Mother’s Day Sunday 12th May for a special celebration for our mums! FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH

In Search of True Leadership I believe that the world is searching for true leadership. By “true” leadership I mean leadership that has the will and the capacity to lead us somewhere good – somewhere better, or higher. Such leadership impacts on our souls by giving us vision and hope. Sometimes all we need is a little glimmer of light to be stronger inwardly. But where will we find it? We know true leadership when we see it. It is not afraid to put forward the truth even if it is unpopular because it is not self-serving. True leadership does more than manage things on the current level – it offers wisdom that changes your life and lifts it higher. It doesn’t just deal with surface issues but those streaming in the bunkers of our souls. It understands that life is about more than wealth, winning, and appearances. Compassion for people and their wellbeing fuels true leadership. It offers vision for something better and leads the way there. True leadership blesses us with a dream and empowers us towards it. Therefore, it sparks hope and lifts our souls. True leadership is not about positional power but the power to release people to their true life. Can we find it in politics? The media? Religion? Economics? Sport? Perhaps in places, but from what I hear and read most people are still looking for true leadership. Jesus Christ described himself as “the light of the world” and taught that anyone who followed him would “have the light of life”. The wisdom found in his teachings are renowned worldwide. Love and compassion defined him. And the Bible teaches that his death and resurrection both defeated death for us and exalted him to a place of supreme power and authority. If you are searching for true leadership – if your soul longs for a glimmer of light – consider Jesus.

Matilda the Mermaid!

Happy Mother’s Day

to all the Mums & Grandmothers

Need a Real Gardener? Local student, Matilda Mobbs, is taking the junior swimming world by storm, one lap at a time. Matilda was diagnosed with Spina Bifida at the young age of 6 months old. Parents, Cassandra and Adam, were told Matilda would not be able to perform resistance style exercises or sports, in order to keep Matilda’s muscles and joints in the best possible condition. This is when Matilda’s parents chose to enrol Matilda in swimming. At the age of 3, Matilda received her first pair of full leg braces and a walking frame to assist with her mobility. Matilda proved her doctors wrong. With her incredible strength, believed to have been gained from swimming, Matilda did not need the mobility aids she was provided. Matilda, now aged 9, has not only achieved amazing milestones in her short but successful sporting career, thus far, but she has also met and received praise from her idol, Ellie Cole, for her wonderful achievements. “When I met my idol, Ellie Cole, it was a dream come true because Ellie is an S9 Swimmer, and Ellie has a disability like me” Matilda said. Codes such as S9, S8 and SM9 are used to categorise swimmers based on their level of disability. Matilda recently competed in the Catholic Schools Swimming Championships, in March, held at Sydney’s Olympic Aquatic Centre. She received 3 Gold Medals for placing 1st in 50m Backstroke, Breaststroke and Freestyle. This amazing achievement placed Matilda in the NSW State Primary Schools Sports Association Swimming Championships (NSW PSSA) in April. At the NSW PSSA, in all 3 races, Matilda was seeded in 4th, 5th and 6th places. She smashed her goals, receiving Silver for Freestyle, Bronze for Breaststroke and placed 5th in Backstroke. “I really enjoy swimming, because it’s an exercise where I don’t have to push my muscles too hard. My favourite style is Breaststroke, because it’s easy for me to do”. We wish Matilda continued success in her swimming career and look forward to one day watching her on the big screen at the Paralympic Games. Through Shannon’s Eyes You may not know him by name, but by now you would have seen some of Shannon Boyd’s amazing artwork out and about in the local area. The Glenmore Park artist’s colourful murals currently adorn parts of Penrith and we’re about to see a whole lot more of his work. The talented artist first picked up the pencils at an early age, and with a keen eye for detail, hasn’t stopped since. “I can’t really pinpoint a time I would say I became an artist, but I have been interested and had a natural skill for art as young as 5 years old. My kindergarten teacher noticed I had more of a taking to drawing than many other students or children my age and older. She had a quiet word to Mum and provided me with my first set of Derwent pencils and off I went” Shannon told the Glenmore Gazette. “The people I meet or see, popular culture and my own interests have helped inspire me to do something that I enjoy doing. My background in graphic design and interest in comics helped push me into what has become murals and steady artwork. I also teach casually a few days, which helps balance everything” he continued. Boyd enjoys painting people, animals, characters and landscapes with nice colours, tones and perspective. He explained that he is still searching for his recognisable style. “My worst day painting is still better than my best day in an office” he quipped. He is currently wrapping up an Indigenous inspired mural, paying respects to their involvement in World War 1, for Colyton Public School’s Anzac Day Ceremony. After that, he has a high school and another public school to paint murals for as well as some private commissions. Shannon has also been involved in an advertisement for Visit Penrith and DestinationNSW to promote Penrith, which is coming soon. With clients that include PCYC NSW, Colyton Public School, O’Donoghues Irish Pub, Pinot&Picasso, High Street Social, Penrith RSL, High Street Music, BrewLab Cafe, Beefys Burgers, Downtown Brooklyn, Burgerhead, Bondi Sea Wall, Adidas, Ultra Football and Rose Football Academy, he certainly is an artist in demand. Lung Disease doesn’t Discriminate The month of May is Lung Health Awareness Month. Lung disease affects almost 1 in 3 Australians and is responsible for 1 in 7 deaths, however many people tend to ignore the signs and symptoms, often not doing anything about it for far too long. We are all are used to thinking about our heart and skin health, but our lungs are equally important. It’s time we made our lung health a priority as well. This Lung Health Awareness Month, Lung Foundation Australia is urging Australians to stop guessing what may be causing symptoms like breathlessness or fatigue, and to learn how to recognise and act upon the symptoms of lung disease. Most of us never stop to think about our breathing, it’s just something we do. Research shows that almost half (46%) of all Australians rarely or never think about their lung health. Despite this, almost two-thirds of Australians (68%) reported that they have experienced at least one lung related health issue. There are a few simple things you can do to help look after your lung health: • Make your life a smoke-free zone by quitting smoking and/ or reducing your exposure to second hand smoke. • Wear appropriate protective equipment if you work in environments that expose you to the inhalation of dust, gas, fumes or chemicals. • Protect yourself from influenza and pneumonia by having the vaccinations. • Exercise regularly and have a healthy diet. • Practice good hand hygiene to minimise the spread of germs. Until We Meet Again Memories of Mum Mother’s Day is just around the corner and although this is usually a time of celebration, it isn’t always a joyous time for everyone. For those who are not fortunate enough to have their mum around to spoil, spend the day with, call or text, the day can be somewhat challenging and isolating. Thankfully, there is a brand new organisation that supports and assists Australian girls and women whose mums have sadly passed away. Motherless Daughters Australia is a not for profit organisation that was founded by two Victorian women, who had also lost their mum, with the hope of making a difference to the lives of those who experience mother loss. The organisation connects and unites women in the same shoes through a supportive online platform and through events and functions to facilitate new friendships and support networks. There is talk of future plans to extend their supportive reach to sons and fathers. Whilst Motherless Daughters Australia is there to support women through the everyday and life’s major milestones, they know that receiving comfort and support during the lead up to Mother’s Day and on Mother’s Day is also very important and can be very therapeutic. The annual and signature event hosted by the not for profit organisation is a series of pre Mother’s Day High Teas which will run in four major cities this year – one is in Sydney on Sunday 5th May. It’s a lovely afternoon and opportunity to meet and mingle with other motherless daughters during the lead up to Mother’s Day. A chance to talk to those who ‘get it’ and who show the utmost empathy and compassion in a way that is purely indescribable unless you’ve experienced it. Women enjoy a glass of champagne, indulge in delicious food and engage in some of the most uplifting, reassuring and validating conversions whilst honouring their mum and making some special connections. Regentville Firefighters Ready to Open Doors to the Community Firefighters will open the doors to hundreds of fire stations across NSW on Saturday, 18 May for the Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Open Day, inviting people to learn more about Australia’s largest urban fire and rescue service. Regentville Fire Station will be open from 10am to 2pm, delivering a range of free activities including firefighting demonstrations, station tours and safety presentations. Families can also see fire trucks and firefighting and rescue equipment up close and chat to local firefighters about the critical work they do to keep communities safe. FRNSW Commissioner, Paul Baxter said Open Day was an opportunity to show people that FRNSW firefighters do so much more than fight fires. “Our firefighters do fight fires and save people from burning buildings, but our mission and our capabilities extend far beyond fire response” he said. “From road crashes, hazardous material incidents and natural disasters to urban search and rescue and humanitarian relief, our firefighters are prepared for anything and ready to help anyone, anytime, anywhere”. Commissioner Baxter said Open Day was also a great time to talk to the experts about home fire safety in the lead up to winter. “We see a 10% increase in the number of home fires during the winter months, with more fires starting in bedrooms and loungerooms due to things like heaters and electric blankets” he said. “Come and meet the team that’s prepared for anything on Open Day and learn how to keep your family safe from fire and other emergencies”. The local club, which has produced WNBL and Australian representative Tahlia Tupaea, tasted success last season with many of their teams leading their divisions or competing for the top spot. “This season, I am most excited about seeing our teams improve and seeing the players develop their skills on and off the court. And, of course, seeing the new players develop skills taught by our great coaches said Jaidyn Fisher – President of Glenmore Park Basketball Club. Community spirit has been amazing with many volunteers giving up their valuable time to support the club. They welcome new coaches and managers who are interested in joining their ranks as well. “If you’re looking to sign your child up to this fantastic sport, Glenmore Park Basketball is definitely the place to go added Jaidyn. Elle’s a Natural Glenmore Park’s Elle Wakeham may have only just taken up Irish Dancing just six months ago, however the 7-year-old is already proving to be a natural. Elle, who attends the Penrith Gaels Maher School of Irish Dance each week, entered the AIDA St Patrick’s Day Feis in March. Despite this being her first competitive dance experience and a day filled with nerves, Elle received an Adjudicator’s Medal for her performance. “Elle took up Irish Dancing in October last year. The great thing with her dance school is that you can join at any time of the year. There are different levels in Irish Dancing, starting with the beginner’s level and you can move through them at your own pace explained Rebecca Wakeham, Elle’s Mother. “She was watching The Wiggles on TV with her younger sister and saw Lachy and Emma Irish Dancing. That’s when Elle said she was interested in trying it she added. When it comes to Irish Dancing, Elle enjoys the music, getting dressed up for the competitions in the beautifully designed dresses and the social aspect of the sport. “Her dance teacher, Maria, has created a caring and supportive environment. This has helped Elle to develop confidence performing in front of others and to persevere with learning the fast-paced steps of Irish Dancing said Rebecca. Removing the Biochemicals Lurking in your Muscles that cause Spasms & Pain? I am going to briefly interrupt our series on Paracetamol this month, because I came across an excellent study in the journal of Applied Physiology by Shah etal in 2005, the results of which can really help us to understand what underlies the pain & dysfunction of unhealthy muscle. Unhealthy muscle contains tight, painful areas. Physiologists call these ‘trigger points’, of which there are two types, ‘latent’ and ‘active’. Briefly: 1. a ‘latent’ trigger point is a ‘tight area in a muscle’ that is not painful unless pressed. Pressing leads to pain locally & sometimes also at sites called ‘referral’ points. 2. an ‘active’ trigger point has pain (local and/or referred) that is either: a. present constantly, or b. elicited simply by using the muscle 3. muscles containing trigger points are also usually tight, shortened, weaker, with altered nerve functions 4. Trigger points arise due to acute or chronic muscle overloading

5. If pain from an active trigger point worsens to become a persistent unrelenting deep ache, a person may be diagnosed with ‘myofacial pain syndrome’ By contrast, healthy muscle: 1. contains no trigger points 2. if pressed will yield easily & feel no pain, only pressure. Evidence suggests ‘dry needling’ benefits sore muscles. Inserting a needle into latent or active trigger points will cause the muscle to: 1. contract strongly & suddenly, a reaction called a ‘local twitch response’ (LTR), 2. produce a specific ‘LTR’ electrical signal measurable by an EMG machine. 3. often feel significantly less painful afterward In contrast healthy muscles (no trigger point) produce no LTR or EMG signals. So physiologists can use an EMG machine to confirm if a muscle is unhealthy (has a trigger point) or healthy (none). Read more on this next edition.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com I want to tell you about something I saw on the television a few years ago. It’s a story that demonstrates the difference between parenting through connection and using punitive discipline. It was a reality show made in America. I cannot recall the name of the show, something like “Worlds Apart”. It was a series where an American family would leave their modern, fast-paced, disconnected, frozen dinner every night style of life, and go for a week to live in a remote village overseas. On one of these shows, a family of Mum, Dad, and three children, went to a small and remote village in one of the African nations. The villagers lived a traditional life in every way, in the desert with their cattle. There was one well in the village to provide drinking water for everyone. Somehow, one of the American boys, perhaps about 8 years old, did something to contaminate the drinking water in the well. Thus, the women of the village had to walk with their children and babies many hours to retrieve drinking water in pots on their heads. How do you think the villagers responded to this incident? After the incident, the American parents were very angry and embarassed at their son’s actions. The village chief was a very kind and gentle man. The villagers were very kind and gentle. The chief asked the boy to walk with him. They walked into the desert together. When the chief and the boy returned maybe an hour later, the American parents asked their son what the chief had said to him. The boy said that the chief said nothing and he himself had said nothing but they just walked together. Then the boy broke down and sobbed his heart out. The family asked the chief if that’s how he sorts out problems in the village, and he replied that he takes people for a walk in the desert, saying something like “we go out and come back”. After ensuring their survival needs are met, humans have a fundamental need to belong. In this village, survival and belonging were regarded as the same. Go gently and kindly.

It’s Showtime! The Easter Bunny turned up early for two lucky locals who each won family passes to this year’s Royal Easter Show last month, courtesy of the District Gazette. We received hundreds of entries from our readers across all five publications, who each told us in 50 words what their favourite thing about Easter was. A huge congratulations goes to long and loyal readers Karen Clifford and Chanelle Vella, who both walked away with the WIN! With more competitions on the way, don’t forget to ‘Like’ our Facebook pages. Keep an eye out for your chance to win some great prizes! It’s super easy to keep up to date with your community news directly in your inbox, jump on our website www. districtgazette.com.au and subscribe to our newsletter. U Winner! How to Prepare for NAPLAN (it’s not what you think) The very mention of the acronym NAPLAN, which stands for National Assessment Program – Literacy And Numeracy, can evoke a myriad of emotions amongst parents, teachers and students. The controversial series of tests covering skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy has been around since 2008 and targets students in year 3, 5, 7 and 9. The results of NAPLAN are designed to drive improvements in student learning and create accountability within schools. Whilst this may be true from the perspective of ACARA (Australian Curriculum and Assessment Reporting Authority), this is not always the perspective and experience of those involved in the process. Parents and teachers have seen a different side to the tests with some schools ‘teaching to the test’ in a bid to gain higher marks in order to market their school as top performing and offering a better education to those which did not perform as well. Some parents have even employed private coaching to encourage their child to achieve better results, creating a culture of extreme competitiveness and a build-up of anxiety amid students. These issues cannot be ignored and whilst parents have the option of withdrawing their children from sitting the test, others are fighting to have it removed altogether. Practically, however, what can we do to prepare our children for this in the best way possible? The answer is simple - remind them of what the tests are designed to do and reduce the stigma and anxiety around the test by placing little importance on their individual achievements but rather focusing on the holistic view of school improvement. If we, as parents or teachers, take a stand and refuse to get caught up in the competitive nature that has evolved from misuse of this test, it will demonstrate the practical

Explore

use of NAPLAN for taking a snapshot of learning at the time at which the tests were taken. Learning is fluent. Children will have bad days, forget things and fluke things. They will be clever and think outside the square. Some things cannot be measured through a test and some things can. Take NAPLAN with a grain of salt and encourage your child to treat it like any other test they take at school. Remember, it is merely a snapshot.

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next month. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

Happy Mothers Day Enjoy being spoiled on Mothers Day on Sunday 12th May. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out our Facebook, website www. THE LAST WORD Fast forward and here we are in May. The weather is cooling down to a crisp and fresh afternoon, almost deeming it necessary to don the bed socks and extra blankets. The month of May is Lung Health Awareness month. Anyone can get lung disease. As a charity partner and advocate of the Lung Foundation, see page 6 for more information on what you can do to look after your lungs. We've included one of [my] mums most favourite recipes also on page 6, treat Mum this Mothers Day, or like me, get baking and enjoy a slice in her memory. Here at the District Gazette 'We Live.Love. Local'. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Every new day is another chance to make a change'
