2021 Community Building Partnership Program Now Open

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies has announced applications are now open for the 2021 Community Building Partnership program, unlocking $27.9 million for community infrastructure projects across NSW. Tanya Davies MP said $300,000 is available for projects in each NSW electorate, including Mulgoa, and urged local councils and not-forprofit groups to apply for

the funds they need to deliver projects with social, environmental and recreational outcomes. “Local sports clubs, charities, schools and museums are just some of the groups that benefit from this program,” Mrs Davies said. “If your organisation or club needs extra funding for infrastructure, such as playgrounds, accessible features, equipment or refurbishment, then I’d strongly encourage you to apply.” The Community Building Partnership program has awarded more than $362 million to over 16,600 projects since it commenced in 2009. “This program means that you can support your community group to improve the places you meet, train or play,” Mrs Davies said. “Take the time to prepare and submit your application so your community group doesn’t miss out on a share of $300,000.” Applications are now open and close at 5pm, Friday 14 May 2021. Applicants must read the program guidelines to ensure their club or organisation and proposed project are eligible. Too Much Violence Don’t turn away. This is serious! Our lives and our children’s lives are being eroded by this insidious crime every day, all day, for years and years on end. It robs adults of their mental health and wellbeing and it robs

children of their potential. It costs the Australian economy in excess of 13 billion dollars per year in lost productivity and support services and hospital admissions. Imagine if a government department was losing that amount of money every year, there would be a public outcry, a royal commission, politicians would be losing their jobs. This problem is domestic and family violence (DFV). You have probably read the stats. It’s more prevalent than you are led to believe. And unlike any other crime, the victims are usually blamed for the problem – ‘why doesn’t she leave?’ ‘if she didn’t do this, he wouldn’t do that’. The victim blaming causes more inaction and the problem just gets worse. What is DFV? It is a pattern of manipulation, coercion, control, and violence. It’s not just incidents of violence, it is not just hitting. One person systematically erodes the other person (a partner, spouse, or a family member) financially, verbally, spiritually, emotionally, psychologically, sexually, and technologically. The victim is degraded to such a point that they don’t know who they are anymore, they constantly second guess what they are thinking, feeling and experiencing. DFV undermines the parent’s ability to be the best parent they can be and children are victims too. Sometimes the User of Violence is really sweet for a while and the victim thinks everything is OK, but it always comes around to what the user of violence does each and every day to exercise power and control over the victim. It is NOT about anger management because many Users of Violence do not behave this way in the community and at work. Users of Violence frequently minimise and deny their behaviours and they blame the victim. It’s part of the pattern of abuse. They’ll do anything to not take responsibility for their actions. To be clear - there is absolutely NO circumstance where anybody is entitled to use violence within their family. The answer is to stop blaming victims and make Users of Violence responsible for their beliefs, thoughts, and actions. We need to raise our sons to be respectful towards girls, and we need to raise our girls to have self-respect and be attuned to the warning signs of coercion and control. Let’s stop it at the start. The Lions Roar

The Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL Club are ready to roar and looking to have their best season yet this year. 200 players will take the field for the local club in 2021, comprising of 10 teams. This includes Auskick teams (Under 5’s to 8’s) and the Under 9’s through to the Under 17’s. “We can’t wait for the competition to get started again. Despite not having a pre-season, we will look to have 15 rounds and 3 weeks of finals footy. Everyone is excited and positive for the year ahead” smiled Paul Jones, Executive Committee Member of the Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL Club. Even with the disruptions of last season with regards to COVID-19, the club was still able to taste success. The Under 14’s won their Grand Final in the West Competition and have this year been promoted to the Harbour (Sydney Wide) Competition. They will be the first team from the club to be elevated into this competition. Two players became Life Members of the Lions in 2020. This took the total to 3 Life Members within the club. To qualify for this honour, you must have played 150 games. “We still have some vacancies available in our age teams. Particularly in the Under 15’s is where we are looking to boost numbers” said Paul to the Glenmore Gazette. The club now boasts its first homegrown player in the AFL Women’s Competition, with Brenna Tarrant drafted as the 72nd Pick in the 2019 AFLW Draft for the Melbourne Demons. Recent success from the Greater Western Sydney Giants has helped to establish the popularity of the sport in the local area. “Our club continues to go from strength to strength. We started in 2000 and many of our players continue to pull on the Lions jersey year in, year out. Personally, I enjoy watching the kids play and develop their games” Paul ended. If you would like more information, including sponsorship packages, search Emu Plains/Glenmore Park Lions Junior AFL Club on Facebook. CHRISTMESS is Coming

The cameras are set to start rolling this Christmas in July, on Indie film CHRISTMESS, in the Macarthur (the West Pole) and they want you to be part of this film! Directed by former Glenmore Park resident; multi-award winning and AACTA nominated Heath Davis (Broke - Netflix, Bookweek - Stan, Locusts - Amazon Prime), and starring Steve Le Marquand (Two Hands, Les Norton, Broke), Susan Prior (Animal Kingdom, Bookweek, Aftertaste) and introducing international alt-indie-rock sensation; the Middle Kids frontwoman Hannah Joy fresh from her performance on the James Corden show. So, here’s the film: Fresh out of rehab, a desperate once famous actor - Chris Flint - takes a job as a Santa Claus in a suburban strip mall where he unexpectedly encounters his long-estranged daughter and infant grandson. With the love and support of his kind and caring sponsor, Carol, and a young, sharp tongued, gay musician also in recovery named Joy, Chris sets about staying sober to win his daughter’s forgiveness for Christmas. CHRISTMESS is an irreverently funny yet sobering celebration of the Christmas (and human) spirit and a reminder that the only gifts that truly matter can’t be wrapped up and placed under the tree: friendship, family, forgiveness, and love. “We’re really excited to be bringing the production to the Macarthur. Indie-films have a great way of bringing communities together, I’ve seen it happen with my last three films and I see this as a great opportunity to unearth some local talent” said Heath Davis, Director. “CHRISTMESS is a celebration of the human spirit, the kindness of strangers and the healing power of forgiveness; a timeless message, which perhaps now has more meaning and significance than ever before” explained Heath. CHRISTMESS is the first collaboration between Davis and film production company Brick Studios and they’re reaching out to the community to become involved in this film. “The Macarthur region is a charismatic and diverse area and is a natural fit for this film, a story full of heart and salt of the earth characters navigating one of the most stressful times of year” said Daniel Fenech, Producer. So, if you’re a local actor looking for that big break with speaking roles alongside Australia’s best acting talent, they have plenty of roles to cast across a range of ages and ethnicities. For individuals or local businesses looking to support the film, visit them at https://www.facebook.com/christmessfilm. They also have a range of perks on offer on their crowdfunding page at https://igg.me/at/christmessmovie. r Heath Davis, CHRISTMESS Director | Image Supplied by Brick Studios

A Life Committed to Others Mother’s Day is a time to reflect, recognise and thank mothers and grandmothers across the country for all that they do. Their selfless acts and love that they share bind our families together. Glenmore Park resident Vivienne Ross is one such mum and a true, unsung hero. Vivienne, who has two children and four stepchildren, works tirelessly as the Leader of The Nepean Blue Mountains Parkinson’s Support Group. She has been a member of the local group for 14 years and became the Leader 8 years ago. “My husband Barry was diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease in 2007. I got involved with the group then and began learning as much as I could about the disease” explained Vivienne to the Glenmore Gazette. Parkinson’s Disease (PD) is a neurodegenerative brain disorder that progresses slowly in most people. There are a variety of symptoms that can take many years to develop. People living with Parkinson’s Disease will continue to live for years after diagnosis. As the Leader of The Nepean Blue Mountains Parkinson’s Support Group, Vivienne is involved with coordinating all their activities. This includes formal meetings, four face-to-face dance classes, two Zoom dance classes and voice exercise singalongs each month. Vivienne formed the Glenmore Park Carers Group in 2019 and is also a member of Penrith Dementia Alliance and the Anglicare Dementia Service in Penrith. “I’m committed to spreading awareness about Parkinson’s Disease. I want to educate as many people as I can about it” said Vivienne. “If you have Parkinson’s Disease or are a family member supporting someone with this, you are welcome to join our group. We want to reach out and show our support” Vivienne added. HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

So, are Some People Really Just “Inflexible”? Folks often try stretching eventually resigning themselves to believing they’re naturally “inflexible”. The key to their inability to lengthen muscles, comes down to two issues. Poor stretching: 1. regularity and 2. technique Usually individuals stretch for a few seconds, probably for less than 30. They often ‘push’ their stretches – to ‘feel the pain’, of a good stretch. Stretching-associated-pain is often a key reason why they don’t like to stretch and don’t do it for long. Stretching aggressively for short periods is often unlikely to gain effective long term increases in flexibility. Little organelles ‘muscle spindles’, send signals from muscle to brain telling indicating muscle length. A bigger stretch sends a stronger signal. A strong-enough will elicit a ‘myotatic reflex contraction’ stopping you stretching your muscle further, and will be interpreted as painful. In short, flexibility has little to do with actual muscle and connective tissue length, but rather with how strongly and at what stretch-length the myotatic reflex elicits a contraction that resists further stretching.

8 May 2021 www.glenmoregazette.com.au

Done correctly over a period of weeks, regular stretching modifies the way the ‘spindle-brain’ system reacts to stretch: 1. It dampens the strength of the signal sent to the brain by muscle spindles, 2. It makes the brain less sensitive to muscle spindle signals, 3. Reduces the likely hood of a stretch being able to elicit pain, and 4. Reduces the likelihood of any stretch being able to elicit a myotatic reflex contraction. Thus, after regular stretching it takes a lot more muscle length to generate a spindle-signal strong enough to stop you stretching. That is, your body ‘learns’ to stretch further. Hopefully, you can now understand that stretching is simply just a ‘learned skill’! As with any other skill, correct repetition of the skill, improves performance. So, to become flexible, a person must practice stretching regularly, and keep stretching to remain good at it. Next month we will review how to stretch your hamstrings effectively so that your practice doesn’t hurt and can be done just once or twice a week in order to reach and maintain an excellent range of motion.

Glenmore Park Lost and Found was started six years ago in 2015 by local resident Richard Pratsch. The Facebook group currently boasts over 800 members, who have joined to post photos and information about pets and items on social media. “My motivation behind starting Glenmore Park Lost and Found began as a member of local buy and sell groups, I saw so many people posting about lost pets or items and I then realized that Glenmore Park didn’t actually have any type of site dedicated only to lost and found” explained Richard to the Glenmore Gazette. Since the group began, Richard has been keeping a tally of the number of lost pets/items versus the amount found. The results are very impressive! “We have had 677 animals or items lost or missing. Of this, 523 have been found, located or reported as no longer missing” Richard replied. Over the years, there have been many positive stories shared, particularly when beloved pets are reunited with their owners. “One situation that stands out was when Tina, a local lost her 12-month-old Major Mitchell’s Cockatoo about four years ago. She was desperate to find her pet and so relived when it was found. Her reply was ‘Found/saved by the most beautiful family. I will forever be grateful’. Moments like these are why I love this site” said Richard. “The only way these groups work is to boost the local members. The more members seeing these ads from desperate people looking for their loved ones only increases the chances of them being reunited in a timely fashion. So, if residents are looking at joining, just search Glenmore Park Lost and Found on Facebook and send a request” he ended. r

FAITH - FOOTHILLS CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.foothillschurch.com.au | A: Junction Factory Rd & Loftus St, Regentville Sundays 9.30am – www.foothillschurch.com.au

“God Be with You” Recently I said to someone facing hardship, “God be with you”. It was an earnest prayer for God to help her because her issues were far beyond my power to fix. She was not religious but responded with warmth. She was touched by the concept, but I could hear her mind ticking over with a question: “How does that happen?” She was looking out into empty space hoping there is a God who might shine on her, but it left her with her important question. The answer is found not only in what happens at Easter, but in what happens to Jesus AFTER Easter. The Bible teaches Jesus died for the purpose of opening a way for humanity to live with God. At this point, many people are left thinking, and…???? THEN he ascended to heaven, to a place of authority over all things, and sent God’s Spirit. Why is this important for this woman facing hardship? Because God is with us by his Spirit. I don’t mean that God is with us in the sense that He fills the whole universe so is technically ‘with us’, but that He is with us personally. He speaks with us, guides us, heals us, shines light in our souls to remove fear, and helps us in other ways. So, how does “God be with you” happen? It happens as we open our heart to Jesus Christ in faith believing that He has made a way for it to happen. And then we learn how to relate with God spiritually to begin to EXPERIENCE it happening. You might think that such spirituality is a bit out there, but we are simply talking about practices (like prayer, silence, and meditation) which help us become aware of what is happening in the spiritual realm (or the unseen world). This helps us hear our own heart (the hidden stuff ) and tunes us in to the voice, love, and power of God. God be with you.

FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Mahoney P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.gpachurch.online Service Times: Sundays @ 9am, 10.45am and 5pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week. I’m hopeful that by the time this is published, the leadership issues in Parliament will be on their way to being resolved. I know these things take a long time to solve. There needs to be proper investigations and inquiries, to make sure the truth comes out, and then appropriate measures are taken, (restitution offered, appropriate disciplines handed out and new policies made). But I’m hopeful that by the time these words are read in May, our Parliament has made strides to right the wrongs that have come to light. It’s a real shame when those who lead, those we elect, use their power and position for selfish gain, to bully or to abuse others. It’s one of the great and terrible things about leadership. When it goes well it can go really well, and when it goes wrong it can be disastrous. Good leadership can inspire, uplift, and make people feel cared for and safe. Good leaders get the best from those around them, share the victories and own the failures. Bad leadership demotivates, oppresses, and damages people. Bad leaders, as we have unfortunately seen, use and abuse people. There is no safety or accountability, blame is passed on and the leader leads for their own benefit. I won’t claim that the church has always done leadership well (wow, that’s an understatement), but in Jesus we have a wonderful example of what good leadership is like. Jesus taught his followers what leadership should be like “Anyone who wants to be first must be the very last, and the servant of all.” (Mark Chapter 9 verse 31). Jesus taught that to be a leader was to be the first one to serve, the first one to help and the one who look after others. And Jesus lived his words by teaching, healing, and caring for all those who came to him. More than that, he came to serve all of mankind, he made himself a ransom for the sin of all. Dying on the cross as the ultimate service, the ultimate leader for all who will follow him.

Restoring Mulgoa Creek and Cumberland Plains Woodland In Glenmore Park and Mulgoa, organisations are working to restore Mulgoa Creek, build wildlife corridors and regenerate Cumberland Plain Woodland, a critically endangered ecosystem and one of the most heavily cleared landscapes in Australia. Mulgoa and Penrith region is already heavily cleared and fragmented. As clearing and development continues with little or no planning to conserve key linkages for wildlife, these groups are stepping up to ensure our wildlife and precious woodlands are protected and cared for. These groups are volunteer, and member based, and they need more volunteers to continue their amazing work for our environment. They meet at different sites across the region, removing weeds, planting, monitoring wildlife and running fun activities for all ages. One such group is Cumberland Land Conservancy and their amazing work to purchase and protect key properties for conservation and wildlife corridors. Cumberland Land Conservancy Inc (CLC) is a volunteer operated not-for-profit charity dedicated to acquiring land for conservation, with a focus on the ‘Cumberland Plain’ of Western Sydney. CLC stands apart as a community-based charity successfully securing biodiversity corridors in Western Sydney. They currently own and manage four properties – ‘Wallaroo’ in Mulgoa, ‘Thornbill’ in Agnes Banks, ‘Marsdenia’

in Llandilo and ‘Wombat’ in Mulgoa. Combined these properties cover a total of 49 hectares of habitat, protected forever and linking key habitats in Western Sydney. CLC is looking for new members and volunteers. Each member is a co-owner in their properties and a custodian on behalf of all the residents and wildlife of Western Sydney. How to get involved? Come along to a working bee and become a member. Bush regeneration, wildlife monitoring, Streamwatch, Climatewatch and bird surveys are held across the properties. Who: Anyone! No experience is required, just come along! When: The first four Saturdays of each month, rotating around all 4 properties. Occasionally an extra event such as a planting day during the week is held. Where: Held across the first property on different Saturdays. To know when these are, visit their website or check them out on Facebook. https://www.cumberlandlc. org.au/ Their members and supporters are also engaging and empowering the community and local stakeholders to set a new standard in conservation land management. You can also make a tax-deductible donation to CLC, see their website for more details. For general information about Cumberland Land Conservancy Inc. and for any inquiries, contact admin@ cumberlandlc.org.au. For all general Landcare and conservation inquiries, you can contact the Local Landcare Coordinator at landcare@ hrcc.nsw.gov.au or on (02) 4574 9604. THE LAST WORD

Emergency Services

Things are looking up. A travel bubble from Australia to New Zealand has opened. Things are certainly looking very different to this time last year. It’s promising and giving great hope, as the roll out of the COVID vaccine continues. I know I’m excited to see events returning to calendars and more people out and about, supporting local businesses who have operated in a bleak void for the past 12 months. We’re on the cusp of Mothers Day which is the perfect timing to put your Dine & Discover vouchers to good use. If you haven’t already taken advantage of this great Government initiative, search for more information via Service NSW. Narelle broaches an important topic in ‘Parents Corner’ this month. Domestic Family Violence, let’s stop it at the start! Read more on Page 6. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News. ‘Life is short, take the trip, buy the shoes and most importantly, eat the cake!’. Happy Mothers Day to one and all, and to my amazing Mum in the clouds....3 years without you and it doesn’t get any easier xox
