Here Comes PENRITH MONOPOLY The foot of the mountains is home to an abundance of iconic locations loved by locals, and now the region is being immortalised with its very own official PENRITH MONOPOLY board. From March, Penrith residents and visitors will be able to play the world’s most popular board game in a way that pays tribute to all things Penrith. From now until February, fans can voice which locations they would like to see featured on the board via the official PENRITH MONOPOLY Facebook page or by email. The edition will see locally themed squares replace Mayfair and Park Lane from the original London MONOPOLY board and include a customised ‘Community Chest’ and ‘Chance’ playing cards, making the entire game a truly Penrith experience. Winning Moves, manufacturers of the official Penrith version of MONOPOLY under license from Hasbro, say the game will be sold through exclusive local businesses. Dale Hackett, representative from Winning Moves and Penrith local said: “Finally, we have the privilege to bring this globally loved game to the city that I grew up in. We want to ensure that Penrith MONOPOLY is an accurate portrayal of what locals love about the city, so we would love for everyone to get on board and send us their recommendations of what they would like to see included. Anything and everything is up for consideration – from the Nepean River and Penrith Lakes, to Penrith Panthers and Westfields – so get involved! “This edition will be everything you love about the traditional board, adapted in a way that Penrith residents will enjoy for generations to come. There will also be opportunities in the coming months for schools and individuals alike to get involved in the creation of this game, so stay tuned for more exciting details” Dale adds. MONOPOLY first hit the shelves in 1935 – since then it has been played by more than 1 billion people. Today, it is played in 114 countries and enjoyed in over 47 different languages. The new MONOPOLY: Penrith Edition will be available from March from select local businesses across the region.

Hope Fuels Our Soul

An experiment was conducted with two mice placed in separate containers of water. Both containers were covered and in total darkness, but one had a pinprick of light at the top. The mouse in this container swam for six hours longer than the mouse in complete darkness. The pinprick of light gave the second mouse hope. Hope is the expectation that good will come to us down the track. Hope keeps us going in dark places because it fuels our soul. I met with a young man recently who had attempted to kill himself. When asked why he wanted to end his life he said, “Because I feel exhausted.” What he meant was that he had no hope – no expectation that good would come his way. He was inwardly tired, in his soul, because no fuel was getting through to bring energy. We may not feel that desperate, but the COVID situation is wearing. Life has changed. There is no sense of certainty about how long it will go on. Some live with real fears for their physical wellbeing. Some have thrived at home while others have felt imprisoned. The changes in circumstances have made others feel hopeless. I think of those struggling for work to pay the bills. Over the years I have met people in prison who are free, and I have met people out of prison who are imprisoned in some way. This shows that freedom is not about circumstances, but about what is happening inside us. Those in a literal prison who are free have been able to find a ‘pinprick of light’ – to find hope beyond themselves and the circumstances pressing in on them. In the Bible Jesus is described as the Light of the world, because in relationship with him we can expect the goodness of God breaking into our lives. This Light brings hope that fuels our soul when times are hard. The young man in the story above is finding hope in that Light, and you can too.

Need a Real Gardener? Local author Jodi Maher will be launching her new book, ‘An IVF Miracle from Mahers, by J A Maher’, this month on the 16th November, with White Light Publishing. Jodi describes her memoir as an intimate and inspiring reflection of sadness, utter despair, sheer determination, and triumph to become a mother after eleven rounds of In Vitro Fertilisation. “My story will touch the hearts of readers, who have endured heartache to create and hold their baby, either naturally or with medical assistance, or want to understand what others around them are dealing with. “Through the emotional storm and pacing minute by minute to reach another test result, I held a flame alight for my baby, who I hoped to meet one day. I often cried into my pillow at night, hoping IVF would work. After all, it was all I had” explained Jodi to the Glenmore Gazette. Whilst IVF can create a pregnancy with many successful deliveries, it does not guarantee a baby, a full-term delivery, or a live birth. While this possibility rattled Jodi, it was a risk she was prepared to take. She knew very well, once IVF finally worked, that she had no control over how her story would unfold and this made her incredibly nervous for the duration of her pregnancy. “Miscarriage, stillborn, premature birth and infant loss have brought many tears to four special women in my life. With my deepest admiration and gratitude, I have permission to share their stories of loss, reflection, and new beginnings. Thank you Renée, Rosalie, Kim and Kylie. We are new versions of ourselves with a story to share in the hope of bringing connection, comfort, unity, and hope. We can assure you; you are not in this alone” said Jodi. “For anyone wanting to become a parent naturally, are new to IVF, have loved ones about to start the process, or looking to learn more, this story will bring hope, empathy and understanding for any pregnancy outcome” she ended. Jodi will be available for a chat or to sign copies of her memoir, at the entrance to the Glenmore Park Town Centre (Woolworths side) on Saturday 28th November, from 9am - 5pm. r

Welcome to the Community The Coffee Club Glenmore Park have welcomed new owners, with Joanne and husband Andrew Portela taking over the popular café recently. Joanne has 24 years of experience working in the hospitality industry, beginning at McDonalds as a crew person in her teens, progressing to crew training and management, including various restaurants. Andrew once co-owned and operated a café and is excited about returning to the industry after some time away. “Andrew and I have made it our mission to get to every customer and personally introduce ourselves, and with that I’m doing my very best at trying to remember a lot of names. Our key is to ‘keep it simple’. We have been focusing on delivering great customer service, good food and giving our customers an excellent coffee experience. We would like them to walk away with a smile, having helped them have a good day” said Joanne. Joanne and Andrew, who live locally, are both thrilled about their new journey ahead with the business, “We are most excited about the opportunity of a new beginning. I’m a real people person and love to be in my dining room amongst customers. I look forward to growing and developing my very own team. The leaps and bounds that they have come in the last few weeks has been phenomenal. We are only scraping the surface of what we can achieve” stated a passionate Joanne. “Community is the essence of small business. Supporting one another as best we can, especially in these testing times, is what it’s all about. So far, we are overwhelmed with the support from locals near and far and are loving that we are becoming their favourite destination. I have always been big on community spirit, especially around raising funds and helping to make the area a better place for all” Joanne finished.

TILES CENTRE With You Every Step Of The Way

THINKING OF RENOVATING YOUR BATHROOM? Pop in-store and talk to our sales team.

Retailers at Glenmore Park Town Centre continue to grow in strength, by being recognised and awarded at the 2020 Penrith City Local Business Awards held in Penrith on Wednesday 21st September. Most Outstanding Jeweller category was awarded to Viola Jewellers. Viola Jewellers was born from a long line of third generation jewellers, which started in the Middle East in 1890. Having been in operation in Sydney since 1982, in September 2019 they opened a store at Glenmore Park Town Centre. “We consider our customers to be the most important part of our business, which is why we measure our success on the happiness of our customers. Each time we repair an old family heirloom or replace a beloved jewellery item, the happiness and joy the customer expresses makes our business more successful than any other thing. It is a great honour to be awarded, having only been a part of the Glenmore Park community for such a short time” said Haitham Zamil (Owner). The Shed Café was awarded Most Outstanding Café. The Shed Café has been operated by its current owner for close to 2 years and the business has evolved into a seamlessly run café under its new ownership. “Presenting quality food and beverages at attractive prices is our passion. We have developed tailored menu items to suit the community, engaging with customers and building community relationships has led to our successful growth. Being awarded Most Outstanding Café is a proud moment for us, but I couldn’t have done it without the support of our wonderful team” said Carolanne Brennan (Owner). Carolanne Brennan, Owner of The Shed Café, was awarded Business Person of the Year. Carolanne has shown a great commitment to her franchise, staff, customers, and the local community by striving to grow and evolve during COVID. Tailoring her business to suit the needs of the community by taking the opportunity to think outside the square, adapt to the new environment and in turn flourish under difficult circumstances. Carolanne has developed a sustainability program within her café with reduced use of packaging as well as food scraps being turned into compost and donated to local schools for their gardening and agriculture programs. A contactless method of drive thru carpark service has also been developed by Carolanne and proved to be a fruitful endeavour for the business.

It seems like the kids don’t listen or do as they are asked. Sometimes we as adults need to be clearer in our communication. Calm is also handy, as the calmer we are, the calmer our kids are. Parenting Strategies That Tend Not To Work... • When we focus on telling our kids ‘don’t’, ‘stop’, ‘no’, ‘quit’, and ‘not’, sometimes they disregard the ‘don’t’ etc. Or, sometimes, the ‘don’t’ can be like a dare. • Telling the child what not to do, for example, ‘don’t jump on the lounge’, ‘don’t hit your brother’. • Yelling across the room. • Yelling, hitting, name calling, put-downs. • Asking a question if you want the child to do something, for example, ‘would you...?’, ‘can you…?’, ‘do you…?’, ‘will you…?’ Your Challenge Use clear calm instructions to give kids instructions and encourage them to listen: • Say child’s name, get close, get eye contact, touch child gently; • Tell the child what to do OR • Tell the child what s/he is doing wrong and what to do instead. REMEMBER to say ‘thanks for listening’ or ‘thanks for doing as I asked’. If the child does not do as asked after two requests, issue a Consequence. It is often a good idea to give the child a calming down skill in your Clear, Calm Instruction. Example “you are shouting at me, (pause) take a deep breath and think about how you can speak to me in a calm way and with respect”. Wait calmly and quietly for the child’s response. When the child has spoken with you calmly, say “thank you for being calm and respectful”. Parents often say that this strategy is very simple but the hardest thing for them is to be calm. Your high emotional reaction is related to your values. Values are essential to guide your life, but are you going to coach/guide your child in values or force them down their throat? You catch more flies with honey than with vinegar. To calm yourself take some deep breaths, and think of a happy memory (for example, a time when the child was cute or loving, etc). The aim in any parenting strategy is to teach your child how to be better, and parents have to role model that.

Making Rainbows If you’ve been lucky enough to find a painted rock whilst walking around Glenmore Park, chances are it was one of local resident Mandy Siveri’s amazing creations. Together with daughter Taliyah and son Izsak, Mandy first began painting rocks and hiding them for people to find in August last year, as a member of the NSW Rocks Facebook group. The group, which boasts over 80,000 members allows people to post pictures of rocks they have painted that are hidden and found right across the state. “I was inspired to start painting rocks to hide when my daughter found her first rock in Glenmore Park. Since that day, painting is now something we love doing together as a family” explained Mandy to the Glenmore Gazette. In just over a year, the Siveri family have painted over 500 rocks, hiding them locally in places like Blue Hills Wetlands, Surveyors Creek and Glenmore Loch. When on holidays, it also gives them the opportunity to hide more rocks. “We enjoy hiding and finding rocks. It’s like one big adventure together. We’ve had rocks that we’ve painted turn up all over Australia and even New Zealand! The smiles and excitement that this brings for people, particularly in times like now, is all worth it” Mandy said. They use rocks from nearby landscape suppliers, painting with Poscas of all sizes and colours to create the detailed and vibrant designs. It generally takes an hour to paint 10 easy designs or 2 to 3 hours to paint 10 harder designs. “It’s a good destresser too” added Mandy. There’s no limit to the designs that Mandy chooses when painting. Kawaii (Japanese) themed animals, food and animated objects are quite popular. As are anything ‘old school’ like Smurfs and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. “This gets the kids out and about. We’ve met a lot of people and formed new friendships. It’s a great activity that promotes happiness and positivity” she ended. r

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Why Vegans and Vegetarians are more at Risk Of Deficiencies ? The adequacy of all dietary patterns, omnivorous, vegetarian or vegan, depends on nutrient content of foods in the diet and the human gastrointestinal tract’s ability to extract those nutrients (including zinc). Several elements, termed ‘anti-nutrients’, found specifically within plant foods e.g.: 1. seeds (nuts/grains/pulses) 2. tubers, 3. but not generally in animal foods, significantly reduce nutrient digest/absorbability; can damage the gastrointestinal tract. This can increase vegans/vegetarian’s risk of zinc & other nutrient deficiencies, and ill-health. Such substances include: • Phytates in seeds, grains and legumes significantly reduce mineral absorption including iron, zinc, magnesium, calcium. • Tannins are a class of polyphenol-antioxidants in tea, coffee, and cocoa precipitate proteins, inhibit digestive enzymes, affect absorption of vitamins, minerals - especially iron. • Lectins: found in all food plants, especially seeds, legumes and grains, survive digestion and damage gut lining cells, interfere with nutrient digestion and absorption, change normal bacterial flora, affect gut immune state and systemically, disrupt lipid, carbohydrate and protein metabolism, promote enlargement and/or atrophy of key

Zinc and other

internal organs and tissues and alter the hormonal and immunological status. Many lectins are both antinutritive and/or toxic substances and are harmful in high amounts. • Protease inhibitors (PI’s): are small proteins, found mainly in plant storage tissues i.e. seeds (nuts/grains/pulses) & tubers (potatoes, sweet potatoes etc) that inhibit protein digestive enzymes (stomach & small intestine) and can represent up to 10% of total protein of some plant foods. • Calcium Oxalate is the primary form of calcium in many vegetables, eg spinach. Just 10% of calcium in spinach is absorbed, 40% from milk. Oxalate doesn’t hinder zinc absorption. A poorly constructed vegetarian/vegan diet with high levels of all of these antinutritive compounds, can easily lead to various nutrient deficiencies & ill health – including poor cartilage. Omnivores aren’t immune, getting 50-70% of calories from plant foods with the same antinutritive compounds hindering absorption of nutrients from their animal foods. Typical omnivores may eat (high tannin) coffee, (high-phytate/ lectin/PI) toast or cereal for breakfast; meat & salad surrounded by (high-phytate/lectin/PI) sandwich bread for lunch; pizza (low nutrient high high-phytate/lectin/PI white flour dough) for dinner. Easy-to-see how their health might suffer. Next month ways to remove anti-nutritives from vegan foods.

Lions Club Help with Salvo’s Food Drop It started with a call from Lieutenant Andrea Martin, Greater West Team Leader of the Salvation Army, Glenmore Park to Jim Devine of the Lions Club of Emu Plains; saying ‘the larder’s looking empty, can you help?’ Jim put in a call to Brent Mattingly, Coles Manager at Glenmore Park, to seek approval to run a food drop and fix dates for collecting the food. Brent, as always was more than happy to help. Then it was a matter of organising Emu Plains Lions volunteers and lastly, relying on the generosity of the Coles shopping people of Glenmore Park to donate. Shoppers were asked to provide one ‘extra’ non-perishable item over their normal shop and to donate it to the Salvation Army trolley at the checkout. This collection showed the generosity of Glenmore Park Coles shoppers even during COVID-19, with 8 shopping trolleys full to the brim of food collected over 3 days. This was enough to last 2 months for the Salvos and their needy clients. The Lions volunteers were even treated to free coffees, courtesy of Carolanne from The Shed Café at Glenmore Park. The Lions Club of Emu Plains, on behalf of the Salvation Army, wishes to thank everyone involved and the kindness and generosity of the local community. r Coles Manager, Brent Mattingly with Lions Jim, and Cheryl Devine | Image: Lions Club of Emu Plains BUSINESS DIRECTORY

We are at the pointy end of the year. Historically, November is the nose dive into all the upcoming Christmas festivities. This year has definitely been a challenging one, and it is without doubt that the Christmas Season will carry with it significant impacts marking the year that was. It’s important we try to come together and consolidate the bumpy journey’s we have all experienced in one way or another and celebrate that we made it through, that we’re here to tell the stories. There are plenty of great new things happening in and across our community, despite the impacts of COVID through the rubble, beautiful things are beginning to blossom. We have plenty of great reading this month, why not find yourself a nice spot in the garden with a cuppa and your favourite local paper? ‘The happiest people in life are the givers, not the getters’ Enjoy Your Community News.
