Exciting Times for Glenmore Park Realty Glenmore Park Realty is proud to announce a recent change in management. Glenmore Park’s founding real estate agency is now owned and operated by Ultimate Property Group. Directors Belinda Watts and Sue Bolton have a proud and rich history with the area. “I worked for the developer and Glenmore Park Realty for most of my career, about 12 years. Sue also worked there for 13 years” said Belinda.

Issue 104

Belinda and Sue’s vision and hard work over the years is certainly paying off. “We left because we wanted to start an office with modern ideas still with old fashioned values. So, with that said, we opened up Ultimate Property Group. With Ultimate having such wonderful success within its first two years of operation, it enabled us to purchase Glenmore Park Realty” explained Belinda. An important part of the recent acquisition is that the current team of Property Managers, Administration Staff and Sales Staff will still remain. This includes Ralph Saporito. Belinda says, “Ralph has been there for 18 years now. He has seen some families go from their first, second and third homes in Glenmore Park. He’s also sold homes to clients that he has seen grow up from children to home owners”. In keeping with Ultimate Property Group’s image, Glenmore Park Realty will change their colours to pink and blue, so that it becomes obvious they are the same companies. Belinda can’t wait for the future, “This is so exciting for us. Glenmore Park Realty is truly locally owned and operated for the first time in its 20 year history. Sue and I both live in Glenmore Park and love the area and its people”.

Young Writers Showcase Talent The 4th Annual Glenmore Park / Mulgoa Valley Writers’ Festival was held at Glenmore Park High School on Tuesday the 23rd of October. The event showcased the writing skills of Primary and Secondary students across eight local schools. The schools that were represented included Glenmore Park High School, Glenmore Park Public School, Luddenham Public School, Mulgoa Public School, Regentville Public School, Surveyors Creek Public School, Wallacia Public School and Warragamba Public School. Each student, who was selected to attend the event, had written about their hero or who inspired them. The highlight of the evening was the attendance of Guest Speaker, Lisa Forrest. Lisa is a former Australian Olympic Athlete and an Author. Lisa gave a special presentation about her experiences as an Olympian, she spoke about following your own path and dreams, the importance of being a champion rather than a winner and the determination to learn and grow. Glenmore Park High School Principal Natalie Brookton was on hand to assist with the co-ordination of the night, along with many committed students from Glenmore Park High School. Family and friends were privileged to see the huge amount of talent and dedication the students showcased when talking about their heroes and inspirations. The event proved to be a great success where the students were the true champions of the night!

Ready for Christmas?

Does Christmas seem to come around earlier each year? It’s probably no wonder, because the shops have their Christmas stock on the shelves months before most of us are vaguely even thinking about getting out the Christmas decorations. Some people have already sorted out their laybys, many even purchasing their Christmas presents at the January post-Christmas Sales! How organised is that! Gifts are bought. Christmas functions planned and holidays are locked in! Yet for all this, Christmas IS a celebration and for any worthwhile celebration you need to be prepared. Sadly, not everyone thinks Christmas has anything do to do with Jesus. Lots will just enjoy the time off and lazy days by the pool or at the beach. And even though some of our families do drive us just a little crazy, many of us will still enjoy time with families and friends. As you get ready for Christmas this year, remember that at its heart, Christmas is a celebration that God, in his great love and kindness, sent his Son, Jesus Christ, to be born so that you and I could have friendship with Him and real life - eternal life. John 3:16 is a famous verse from the Bible and puts it this way... “God so loved the world that He gave His one and only Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish

Spectacular Girls Night In raises $20,000 for Women’s Cancer!

Carmel, Rhihonda and Kim, volunteers at the Girls Night In. Photo – Carol Hanes

An amazing 450 women of ImagineNations church and our local community partnered in late October to raise much needed funds for the Cancer Council’s research and support for women battling breast and gynecological cancers. It was a night to be entertained with a guest appearance from ‘Dolly Parton’ and local performers. Ladies were pampered with nail painting and massages. The Glamour Shots with hair and makeup were a great success with the generous support of local photographers, hairdressers and makeup artists. Emily and Sharon shared their personal stories over coming breast cancer and ovarian cancer. Carmel, a registered nurse educated the ladies in cancer & how to self examine their own breasts. ImagineNations church wishes to thanks the 80 business’ who kindly donated goods and services to the auctions. Organisers were amazed by the generosity of Mike from Outback Steakhouse in Penrith who catered the event beautifully. Every day 46 women get told they have cancer. Every day 7 women die of breast or gynaecological cancers. Every dollar donated directly contributes to the reduction of this statistic and assists those women dealing with the disease.

Be Bushfire Ready A hot, dry summer is forecast, and with that, comes a greater risk of fire. Homeowners are being urged to act now to protect their homes and property ahead of the looming bushfire season. NSW Rural Fire Service Commissioner Shane Fitzsimmons said, “The last two years were dominated by the La Nina pattern which typically brings wetter and cooler conditions. This season, the El Nino pattern is returning and trending towards drier and hotter conditions as we move into the summer period.” It is likely that the combination of warmer weather and grass growth from the recent rains could contribute to a dangerous fire season, so be prepared.

PREPARE • ACT • SURVIVE PREPARE. You must make important decisions before the fire season starts. ACT. The higher the Fire Danger Rating, the more dangerous the conditions. SURVIVE. Fires may threaten without warning so you need to know what you will do to survive. For more information about how to protect your property, visit rfs.nsw.gov.au www.glenmoregazette.com.au

PADRE PIO PARISH UPDATE

Fr Robert Riedling • 34-38 William Howell Dr , Glenmore Park • Phone: 4737 9735

“It is a good and holy thing to pray for the dead.” We find these words in Sacred Scripture and they give us a perspective on something people of faith find very natural to do as an act of love for those who have gone before us - pray. Our love for another doesn’t decrease or evaporate simply because that person dies. It is a natural desire on our part to pray that our deceased loved ones may now be dwelling in God’s eternal light and love. Quite simply, we feel that prayer is something we can continue to do for a deceased relative or friend. It is a reflection of our love for them and it can be effective in both assisting that person on their way to heaven and bring the one praying a sense of much-needed peace and comfort. The month of November is a traditionally a time in the Church when we place a special emphasis on praying for our deceased loved ones, that they may be granted the grace of dwelling for all eternity in the presence of our loving God. Naturally, we pray regularly for those we love who have died, but November is a month set aside by the Church for making a special effort to offer prayers for the dead. Catholics believe that in order for us to be granted admittance into the presence of our Creator, we need to be cleansed totally from any impurity that clings to us in the form of sin, which is essentially a turning away from God. Just as we would dress up in our finest clothes if we were due to meet a person of great importance and stature such as the Prime Minister or Queen, so we want to ensure that we are in the fittest state possible to meet our Creator who is of far greater stature than any mere secular leader! We understand that there is a state of existence whereby we experience this purification and we call it “purgatory”. The Church believes that those experiencing the cleansing of purgatory are assured of their salvation. Purgatory is not, therefore, a punishment, but a necessary stage on the road to eternal life. We assist those in purgatory by praying for them, offering Mass for them, keeping alive in a very real way the love that we feel for them. We pray for the dead just as we would like to know that others will pray for us when our earthly life has ended. The particular day in November when we offer a particular Mass with special prayers is 02 November, All Souls’ Day. You are very welcome to come to Padre Pio Church at either 8:45am or 7:00pm on Friday 02 November and be present at a Mass offered for the souls of our deceased loved ones or simply pop in for a prayer and some quiet time during the day. If you are reading this after 02 November, feel free to come along to any Mass in November when we remember and pray for the dead. Check out Mass times at www. padrepioglenmorepark.org.au. I’d like to take this opportunity to briefly mention our Christmas Carols night for all the family. It will be held in the Bethany School hall on the Padre Pio Parish grounds on Saturday, 08 December, starting at 7:00pm. Lots of great singing, food and drink, glowsticks, raffles and a visit from Santa! A great family night and all are welcome! More details next month. Blessings, Fr Robert Riedling 8

Fun at the fair! Wow! What an awesome day! As you entered Bethany Catholic Primary School, we greeted you with our new ‘Kids Alley’, a place for kids big and small to experience the classic fete games our parents would have played at their school fairs. Then the brave ones headed off to the famous Haunted House for a scare while the rest of us enjoyed checking out our wonderful stall holders within the Indoor and Outdoor Markets. Kids were able to discover new after school activities in the new Sports Zone and meet their local heroes of the Triple 0-0-0 Squad all while following the trail of Bethany Bear! But enough about that, how about those fantastic rides?! From getting dizzy on the Teacups, zooming down the Giant Slide or crashing into your friends on the Bumper Cars, we think it’s safe to say our Ride Zone was unreal! And at the end of the day it was great to take 5 with our wide selection of delicious food while enjoying fantastic performances by local groups. A big thank you to all who supported the Bethany Fun Fair 2012, we had an amazing day and hope you did too! See you next year!

70th Anniversary of Kokoda
Ninety year old local World War II veteran, Mr Henry Fawkes, will soon embark on one of the great adventures of his life, as he heads to Port Moresby for the 70th Anniversary of Kokoda, be held on the 6th November. Federal Member for Lindsay, David Bradbury was advised that during an upcoming service in New Guinea, three graves in the Bomana Cemetery in Port Moresby would be named. These fallen soldiers were previously buried in an unnamed grave and were members of the Australian “Z” Special Unit, of which Mr Fawkes is believed to be the only surviving member.
Mr Bradbury met with Mr Fawkes to congratulate him on his service to Australia and wish him all the best for his upcoming trip.
“Mr Fawkes has had a long and distinguished career in the Army fighting for our nation,” Mr Bradbury said.
“I was extremely moved by his story; particularly in hearing that one of the unnamed graves belongs to a fallen soldier who died in Mr Fawkes’ arms.
I am delighted to announce the Gillard Government will sponsor Mr Fawkes and his daughter to attend the 70th Anniversary of Kokoda commemoration in Port Moresby.

I hope his upcoming trip is a special and fulfilling experience.”

By Linda Cassell When you’re going through a rough patch, a good listener can make all the difference. Sometimes friends and family are too close – you might fear upsetting them, they might have unconscious agendas, they might betray your confidence or they might be part of the problem. When we hear another’s concerns and worries it’s easy to fall into the trap of “telling them what to do”, sharing your own similar experiences or trying to solve the dilemma for them. Although well intentioned, advice is not always what’s needed and can be disempowering, taking away your right and responsibility for your own choices. Giving advice undermines the principle that each of us has the answer within and may just need time and space for it to emerge, which can be hard to find in a busy life. A safe person and place where you can be totally open and honest about your dreams, doubts and fears – without criticism or judgement – are the gifts of counselling and therapy. One of the central misconceptions of counselling is that you will be told “what to do” or how to “fix” your life. Not so. A professional counsellor’s role is to listen, watch and, where appropriate, ask questions to help you hone in on your own innate strengths and abilities. We draw on a toolbox of proven techniques and theories as necessary. Ultimately, however, research consistently shows that the alliance - the therapeutic relationship - and your own motivation are the keys to change. * Linda Cassell - Assoc MAPS, Master of Counselling, Psychology Honours (BASS) - is a psychologist and counsellor in private practice in Luddenham. Glenmore Park Residents Group October’s meeting of Glenmore Park Residents Group was full of information from Sue Day on how we approach Penrith Council & NSW State Government on improving traffic flow in and out of Glenmore Park. This will be a long process and we need your help in lobbying both groups. Send us your comments about your journey to & from work to this email address glenmore_prg@ fastmail.fm, the more information we have, the stronger our case. We are also lobbying council for toilet facilities to be built near Floribunda Community Centre. As the centre is closed on weekends there are no facilities nearby for anyone using the park. From next year our meetings will be held on the third Tuesday of every month from February to November, signs will be posted in the local shopping centre and at various shops in the area. Our next meeting will be held on Tuesday 13th November, 2012 at Floribunda Community Centre at 7pm. Hope to see you there!

PET CHAT

Orchard Hills Vet News

Safety for Your Pets During the Upcoming Festive Season Snakes – The warmer weather means that snakes are emerging from hibernation. Be aware that we live in a semi-rural area, and snakes will be about. A snake bite to your pet can be deadly, so fast veterinary attention is required to administer snake antivenom. Clinical signs of snake bite include: weakness, collapse, twitching of the muscles, vomiting, dilated pupils, and later stages include blood in the urine. Paralysis Ticks – Ticks are more common in the warmer weather. If you and your pet travel to the coast or beach or lower Blue Mountains, your pet may bring a tick home and then show signs of weakness, gagging, vomiting, drooling saliva and paralysis. Tick antiserum is the antidote, and early treatment is advised.

Santa Photos With Your Pets Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2012 to take photos with your pets. Santa will be here from Monday 3rd December until Friday 21st December 2012. Photos of your pets are to be taken with Santa from Monday to Friday 5-7pm and on Saturdays 10am-12pm. No appointment is necessary for the Santa photos, just drop in and don’t forget to bring your camera if you want extra photos. A gold coin donation to the Guide Dogs for your photo in a Christmas card will be greatly appreciated.

Babies First Birthdays! Indi and Jackson will be celebrating their First Birthday’s on 28th November 2012. How fast does the year go? Both families are looking forward to planning a huge birthday bash. I am sure they will be spoilt rotten with a birthday in November and Christmas in December. It won’t be long before they start crawling, walking, talking and getting into everything!!! Both Belinda and Carly are enjoying motherhood. Belinda returned back to work this year, and Carly will return next year. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Pooch Pampering Pays Off Aussie Pooch Mobile franchisee, Aaron Milne from Glenmore Park has taken out the coveted New Franchisee of the Year established under 12 months, presented at the recent Aussie Pooch Mobile International conference on Bondi Beach in NSW. The award is hotly contested and is the icing on the cake for Aaron who started as a Franchisee in October 2011 and has been building ever since. “Winning the award was truly amazing as I was up against some very good competition,” said Aaron. “It’s such an honour. I absolutely love what I do and being an Aussie Pooch Mobile franchisee is more than just a job, it is a passion and it also has benefits for my many gorgeous dogs who get VIP service and expect nothing less.” And it’s a passion that Chris Taylor, founder of Aussie Pooch Mobile says is the absolute essence of Aussie Pooch Mobile. Aaron also throws himself relentlessly into many events to help raise money for charity, the most recent being Million Paws Walk. “I am so fortunate to be doing something I love, that I want to be able to give back to the community,” explains Aaron. “Being involved in worthwhile causes, and helping others, is extremely humbling. It’s the Aussie Pooch philosophy and something I feel extremely proud to be a part of.” So what’s next on the agenda? “In the next year I would like put another representative in my area so I can continue to provide efficient service to my current and new clients”.

PARENT’S CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services. Ph: 0409 986 121 Email: Narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au Blog: http://oranaplaygroup.wordpress.com

Parenting through reward and discipline Our society, schools, judicial system, way of parenting is built on reward and discipline. If your child does something “naughty” you apply some discipline. If your child does something well you apply some reward. Sounds good and right doesn’t it? So, why then, do I see so many parents who are confused and struggling, when they are clearly doing what society approves of - reward and discipline? A lot of parents are really struggling with their children’s behaviour. If you have more than one child, it’s a fair bet that one of your kids challenges you on a daily basis. I think that when parents hear the word “discipline”, they automatically think they have to be mean in order to “teach the child a lesson”. You don’t have to be mean. How do you feel when someone is mean to you? Children are people too. Parenting is a balance between taking charge and being kind. There are times when you have to take charge to keep your kids safe and let them know about the limits. And in between times you can be kind. But you can be kind whilst taking charge. When you think of “discipline”, do you think – payback? revenge? anger? drawing a line? hurting your child to make a point? Now, change the word “discipline” to “education” or “guidance”. Does that change how you might approach you child’s mistaken-behaviour next time?

Of course, if your child is about to step in front of a car, you don’t say “Sweetie, I don’t think that’s a good idea”. No, you quickly pick him up and bring him to safety. But most issues of mis-taken-behaviour are not life and death. You can actually take a moment to breathe and think “what is the best way to handle this so my child will actually learn something here?”. I call this “Stop, Breathe, Think, Do”. If you react immediately to your child’s behaviour, you are likely to do what your parents did to you. How did you feel when you were a kid, and your parents hit, screamed at, called you names, rejected you? Realistically is your child going to learn the lesson immediately, first go? Nah, you are going to have to repeat the lesson many more times for your child to “get it”. What will be most effective in the long run? Taking the education/guidance approach or being mean? If you would like to know more about this guidance approach, there is a brilliant website that you can subscribe to. It’s called Aha! Parenting (http://www.ahaparenting.com/_blog/ parenting_blog) and it’s written by Dr Laura Markham. Take the bits that work for you, and let me know how you go. Craft ‘n’ Connect Chance to join others while you work on the craft projects that are unfinished at home. We also make foster care packs to give to new Foster carers. Mondays 9:30 –11:30 fortnightly.
