FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School | Christmas Service: 9am @ Regentville Public School

What Can We Trust Anymore? The bloke giving me a quote to do some work on our new Church building in Regentville picked up that I was a novice and quoted about $4,000 more than I knew was reasonable! What do you feel when this happens to you? I feel a loss of innocence in the relationship and trust goes down the plughole. Fellowship or relationship between people is built on trust, whether we are talking about a marriage, a family, or a community. And when we feel we cannot trust anyone because we feel they are taking us for a ride, not being truthful, or being deceitful for their own gain our souls feel darker. We need someone to trust – someone who tells the truth rather than pretending to promote themselves or get something from us. I overheard two old blokes talking at Ripples pool: “Who can you trust anymore? You used to be able to trust your leaders and your neighbours, and what people said was taken as the truth.

These days words are cheap and the world’s gone crazy.” From the conversation I took him to mean that everyone was out for themselves and this caused people to pretend with each other – to say one thing but to think or do another thing. Because of it he said, “I don’t know who to trust anymore! What’s true and what isn’t?” We can’t nail everything down, but the human soul requires some amount of truth or certainty to be able to thrive. When everything is like shifting sand our souls become thin, marriages falter, and communities become superficial. We might say “How are you?” but the sort of truth that builds trust and makes us feel safe and happy in our community is missing. Jesus Christ taught that we can trust his words and his life to express truth. If feels like shifting sand and your soul feels thin I invite you to read the Bible and hear Jesus speak.

FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.

What Do You Want? In December 2017 the ‘Huffington Post’ newspaper printed the results of a survey asking people if in one word they could say what they wanted more of in life. How would you answer that question? How did the people surveyed answer that question? Here are the top 10 things they said. The number one missing element was happiness. Number two was money. Following that was freedom, then peace, joy, balance, fulfilment, confidence, stability then passion. What you might find very interesting is that it is the testimony of Christian people throughout the ages that these are things that you can find by following Jesus – apart from money, which Jesus is not against but clearly states will not bring happiness! Not only is this the experience of millions and millions of Christian people, but there are dozens of places in the Bible where we see Jesus making promises that those who trust and follow him will know these things. For example, concerning freedom; “If you hold to my teaching,

you really are my disciples. Then you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free.” Concerning happiness; “Blessed are those who are poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” Concerning peace; “Peace I leave with you; my peace I give you. I do not give to you as the world gives. Do not let your hearts be troubled and do not be afraid.” Or concerning joy, “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you...I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.” So much more could be said, but here’s the bottom line; the things in life that we want which are truly valuable will only be found in Jesus! This truth fills the many people who call Glenmore Park Anglican Church home, with joy and confidence. Join us on Sundays or throughout the week to discover the difference Jesus will make to your life.

Doing it for Grandma!

It was just like any other September weekend. The sun was shining, kids were filling the fields busily preparing for their next game, families were going about their typical weekend chores and duties, shopping, birthday parties, swimming lessons.....just an ordinary weekend like the many before them; but not for two Glenmore Park brothers, Flynn (11) and Kobhi (8). In May this year their beautiful and courageous Grandma was taken too soon, after years battling bad health. Her story is one that still hurts their hearts to tell. Aged only 67, Grandma (Wendy Frame) who was also a long time Glenmore Park resident, battled a steep decline in health after contracting Wegener’s disease in 2003. From here she was fighting an uphill battle. Long days of dialysis eventually led to a kidney transplant; multiple medications; health and dietary lifestyle changes; ups/downs; regular medical appointments and sporadic stays in hospital. Like most grandchildren, Flynn and Kobhi were her absolute everything; and she was theirs! After surgery in 2010 to help restore the blood flow to her new kidney, which was slowly rejecting; Wendy was hospitalised in a coma for 4 weeks. To say it was a difficult time, is an understatement - but her strength amazed everyone around her; and that Christmas the family were all treasuring special moments together at home; counting their blessings to be together again with their strong, determined and precious Grandma. The boys spent many valuable moments with their Grandma over the years. If they weren’t at home, you could bet your bottom dollar they were at Grandma’s. Grandma’s house was a second home, always with the best home-cooking, warmest of beds, spectacular play-room, outside play area and a love like no other! In 2014, Grandma faced another diagnosis. This time she was told she had fibrosis of the lungs, a possible side-effect to another medication used early on. Her background of being a nurse and carer, seemed to bring with her this ability to rise to each challenge and keep going. With a 49 year old daughter (Margret) with a lifelong disability, Cerebral Palsy and an intellectual age of 7; Wendy had always cared for others. There was no time for her to dwell or have selfpity. She was strong, determined, driven and not giving in. In 2017, she complained of breathlessness, something that

would come and go on exertion; but now it was more regular and ongoing; even at rest. After a series of tests, it was discovered her fibrosis had progressed. The cause was unknown and she was diagnosed with Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis. Despite now being tied to an oxygen machine 24 hours a day, with increasing reliance growing from 2 litres per minute to 15 in less than a year; it was obvious the boys brought her joy and removed her from the darkness and isolation that came with her condition. The weekend of the 15th/16th of September had been marked on their calendar for months. In fact, while it seemed so far away, it appeared to sneak up on them unaware. They would host a Garage Sale in honour of their late Grandma, one where they could spread awareness and pay forward a donation to the Lung Foundation to help other families and patients suffering the same debilitating condition and journey that their Grandma had faced. With a long day of preparations on the Saturday, followed by an early rise with the birds on the Sunday. The boys would have made their Grandma proud. The turnout was spectacular, items swiftly sold, with plenty of bargains to be had. Both strangers and special friends came by the bus-load to honour a woman who forever gave and never ever gave up. Sales of over $1000 and a donation of 10% to the lung foundation, was the icing on the cake! The brothers have every intention to keep Grandma’s memory alive and continue to raise funds for the Lung Foundation with repeat sales in the near future; in the hope they can make someone else’s journey easier or less isolating. “I just hope noone else suffers like my Grandma did” said Kobhi. Survived by her husband, loving daughters and grandchildren, Wendy will live on in their hearts forever. Since May, Flynn and Kobhi have adapted to a new ‘normal’ with their Aunty Margret now living with them. They have a new found appreciation for family and people with disabilities. Through loss we grow and find strength. For more information or support regarding IPF or other Lung Conditions, contact the Lung Foundation Australia on 1800 654 301 or join our FB support group: https://www.facebook.com/ groups/203287517211000/

Damfest 2018 – Always Something New! This year marks the 13th year of Damfest, with the great community event being held on Sunday the 21st of October at the Warragamba Recreation Reserve in Warragamba. Damfest is a free event and is organised and presented by a sub-committee of the Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre (WSNC). It began in Warragamba town centre as a way for all local community and sporting groups to fundraise on a grand scale. The event outgrew the town centre and was moved to the Recreation Reserve to cater to its continued expansion. In the last few years, Damfest has seen its attendance numbers increase along with the variety of things to see and do. The event now includes live entertainment, car show, bike show, swap meet, Emergency Services displays, market stalls and amusement rides. There will be fun for the kids throughout the day with reptile shows, working dog displays, sheep shearing and KindiFarm, along with face painting and live characters to entertain everyone. Jake Rattle’n’Roll will be live on stage along with the Rockabilly dancers. There will also be an appearance from Short Notice. The community stage will include performances from Warragamba Public School, a local dance group, line dancing displays and more. “It’s not too late to book a market stall for Damfest and to join Warragamba Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre and prepurchase your discount rides wristband for a great day of fun” said WSNC’s Lee Hodder. Wollondilly Mayor Judy Hannan will again be MC for the day. “We would like to thank all our local businesses who support this event every year. Without you, this event would not be possible” said Sandra Harlor from the organising committee.

8 October 2018

“This year we would also like to thank our major sponsors Allam Property Group, WaterNSW, Uniting and Wollondilly Shire Council” she added. Dam fun for everyone! Damfest opens at 10:00am till 4:00pm. Big Hitting Phantoms

The Glenmore Park Phantoms Softball Club are set to have another big season, after finishing last season on a high. With 15 teams, 180 players and officials suiting up in purple and white, the local club will be a real threat in the Penrith City Softball Association competition this season. The Phantoms highlights for last year were very impressive, which included 5 premierships winning teams (Under 11 Boys, Under 13 Boys, Under 16 Girls, Division 1 Ladies and Division 2 Men), 6 players from the club representing NSW and 1 player, Jacob Donaldson, representing the National level in the victorious Under 19 Mens World Champions team that won in Canada in July. Adding to this, 2 club coaches Chris Coleman and Wayne Frost, were selected to coach NSW. The Phantoms produced the Presidents Cup Winners for 2018 and the cherry on top was Jacob Donaldson winning the Senior Sportsperson of the Year and Chris Coleman the Coach of the Year at the Penrith Valley Sports Awards. “This year, we were provided with a grant from the NSW State Government and this has allowed for us to rebrand as a club and provide new shirts to all of current and new members. We have also been able to gain 3 new sponsors, Minutemen Press, Millers Scaffolding and TRN Group, who have been able to provide the funds to continue the growth of the club and provide new opportunities for our players and officials” said Craig Woodland, President of Glenmore Park Phantoms Softball Club. “We are hoping to continue to grow our development program, which allows our players and coaches to improve their skills and game play as well as opening up more opportunities for them in the game. This season is also the first season that we have had since the announcement of softball being back in the Olympic Games. With this announcement, we can continue to promote the game in all aspects of the community” Craig explained. “We have a great club and through the ongoing support of our members and their families, we would not be the club we are today” he ended. For more information about the Glenmore Park Phantoms Softball Club, including sponsorship opportunities, find them on Facebook.

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com There is a little fella named Kid President on YouTube. Whenever I want a belly laugh I look at one of his videos, he is so cute. He is very fond of ‘pep talks’. One of his videos is ’20 things we should say more often’. I am not funny like Kid President, and I’m not fond of corndogs, but here are my top 20 things parents should do if they want to be happier parents (in no particular order): 1. Get rid of ‘good boy’, ‘good girl’, and ‘good job’. Use descriptive praise instead. 2. Get rid of ‘naughty’ and ‘bad’. Tell your child what s/he has done wrong, and what to do instead. 3. Avoid ‘don’t’, ‘stop’, ‘no’, ‘quit’, and ‘not’. Tell your child what s/ he has done wrong, and what to do instead. 4. Give your child a minimum of 12 hugs per day, whether s/ he deserves it or not (that’s called unconditional love). 5. Avoid questions if your child has no option. “Would you like to hold my hand in the car park?” “No thanks Mum/Dad”. Child zooms through car park. 6. Be a good role model. ‘Do as I say not as I do’ doesn’t work any more in this age of savvy bright sparks. 7. Be consistent, immediate, and decisive. 8. Be assertive (not passive or aggressive) and stand up for yourself in a kind way. They are looking at (and learning from) you. 9. You can set limits and boundaries for your kids. You don’t need to be mean. 10. Screens are a privilege not a right. I don’t know how my generation ever survived without screens. Oh yeah, we played outside, a lot. 11. Have dinner together. Ditch the screens at dinner time. 12. If behaviour is predictable (happens a lot), it’s preventable. 13. The more attention you pay to negative behaviour, the more of it you will get. Focus on the positives. 14. Take responsibility for your own thoughts, feelings and actions. 15. Make consequences related to the mistaken behaviour. 16. Kids aren’t allowed to hit you. If they do, they learn that they can get their own way through violence. 17. Teach your kids to breathe. In through the nose, hold, out through the nose, hold. 18. After teaching them to breathe, teach them how to problem solve. 19. Sing, dance, play, laugh. Look after yourself. 20. Do Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) because it’s regarded by the United Nations as the best parenting course in the world, and it’s Aussie made. And it’s cool.

The Importance of Reading Did you know research shows that learning to read is one of the most significant factors in school achievement and that early exposure to books and stories greatly contributes to success in initial literacy? There are strong links between literacy, school performance, self-esteem and opportunities in life - with poor literacy skills being linked with lower education, earnings, health and social outcomes. When we read, we look at and comprehend the meaning of written or printed matter by mentally interpreting the characters or symbols of which it is composed. Sounds easy, right? From birth, children are developing their talking and listening skills. These skills provide the foundation for reading and writing. Before school, some children may identify familiar letters, repeat rhymes and songs, ask for the same book to be read over and over, and start to make writing marks on all kinds of surfaces (much to their parent’s distress). This is proof that they are well on their way to becoming readers and writers way before school even begins. If you want to encourage children to develop their literacy skills and embrace a love of reading from a young age, here are a few suggestions: • Read to your child every day • Let your child see you read for enjoyment and for information • Allow your child to ‘read’ to you using the pictures or their memory • Expose your child to many books – letting them just open them, look at them and manipulate them • Visit the public library • Observe, note and read signs, logos and other environmental print • Talk, discuss and ask questions – encourage your child to

do the same • Most of all - make it fun! It is important to ensure that reading is seen as enjoyable as well as functional, to ensure a lifelong love of reading that serves to enrich and educate your child well into their adult life. Article: Sara Drebber @ www.educatered.com.au

The Origins of Halloween Halloween is celebrated on October 31st. There are as many versions of the origins of Halloween as there are views about the day itself. Some people see it as a fun activity for children who dress up in costumes, have parties and go trick-or-treating to collect as many sweets as possible. Others see the day as a superstitious time of ghosts and evil spirits. As an American who has lived abroad for 25 years, I have been asked zillions of times ‘Why is Halloween such a big deal in the States?’ And, all I can say, is that it’s all about the SUGAR! Kids in America love dressing up and running around the neighbourhood collecting as much candy as they can carry, until as late as their parents will allow them to stay out. The whole community gets involved and many houses are decorated, some quite elaborately. The actual origins of Halloween date back 2,000 years ago. The 31st is the last day of the Celtic calendar, which was originally a pagan holiday honouring the dead. The Christians then created All Saints Day on the 1st November to honour saints (and convert pagans). The Celts believed that the souls of the dead were free to roam the streets on that night, so they left goodies out to soothe the unfriendly spirits. This is how trick-or-treating got its start. The streets these days are filled with much friendlier and far cuter little souls, all dressed up and hankering for a choccie!

They are 2 of 50 students Australia wide selected for the upcoming camp in Canberra during the October holidays. Over 5 packed days, they will be immersed in Space and the Space Industry. They will learn about space, meet scientists, engineers, physicists, astronomers and astrophysicists who are working on NASA missions. They are expected to visit and experience the Advanced Instrument and Technology Centre (AITC) and touch satellites, look at dwarf galaxies orbiting around Centaurs A, hear about how stars collide and learn about the first ripples in space which are known as gravitational waves. The students will also be visiting NASA deep space communications complex, experiencing launching rockets and flying drones. Their passion for science and astronomy is contagious and the school can’t wait to hear all about what they have learnt when they get back. Congratulations April, Lara, Jimmy and Mr Mulcahy, for his guidance throughout. We look forward to even more great exceptional achievements from these students in the world of Science and STEM.

Triple Threat Grace Glenmore Park’s Grace Button is an athlete you are sure to hear more about in the future, with the gifted 9-year-old now representing at State level in three sports – OzTag, judo and athletics. The local student’s latest achievement includes a recent third placing in the 800m at the Sydney West School Sport Association Athletics Championships with a time of 2 minutes 50 seconds. This was held in Blacktown last month and booked her a place at the State Championships for the first time, later this year. Personal bests in 100m, 200m and 800m and 6th in Long Jump made for one successful meet. Grace’s speed and agility have enabled her to represent Nepean OzTag at State level last year as well as at National level for the West Sydney Tigers. Adding to this was her amazing feat in judo earlier this year, flying the flag for Zoo Judo and NSW, which saw her tie for 4th in the country. “Grace trains twice a week for long distance running as well as playing touch football, judo, little athletics and OzTag. She loves her sport” said Craig Button, Grace’s father. She is aiming for a PB and to compete well in athletics at the State level. Grace is proud that she made it to this level, especially because she set herself the goal to achieve this in 2018. She is also hoping that her team mates and friends take out the National title for OzTag in October, making it two years in a row.  Grace with her certificate at the Sydney West School Sport Association Athletics Championships | Image Supplied

NSAIDs - Can They Increase Your Risk Of Gastric & Duodenal Ulcers? Stomach & duodenal ulceration & bleeding is a well-known side effect of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) including aspirin, and a major limitation to long-term use. Wallace published the following statistics (relating mainly to the older NSAIDs) in 2000: 1. ‘$8 billion’ is the estimated global value of NSAIDs sales p.a., but 2. The global ‘cost of treating gastrointestinal adverse effects of NSAIDs almost certainly exceeds this’ 3. The USA on it’s own spends over $4 billion p.a. to treat gastrointestinal side effects for just rheumatoid arthritis patients taking NSAIDs As you probably know, a healthy stomach secretes: 1. acid so powerful (pH 1) that you could use it to wash bricks, along with 2. powerful digestive enzymes that easily chop up tough proteins. So why doesn’t the stomach digest itself? Answer: The stomach continually produces substances called ‘prostaglandins’ that activate almost all the processes by which the stomach protects itself from acid, enzymes, pathogens & physical damage (Laine L etal, 2008 p46). NSAIDs cause gastrointestinal bleeding mainly by lowering production of prostaglandins, thereby stopping normal protection and healing of damaged stomach lining. The stomach has two enzymes that make prostaglandins, COX 1 & 2. COX 1 makes prostaglandins 24 hrs per day to activate stomach protective mechanisms. COX 2 only makes prostaglandins when damage has occurred & promotes healing of stomach lining.

Older NSAIDs such as ibuprofen naproxen and indomethacin block both COX 1 & 2 and cause high rates of stomach lesions. Newer NSAIDs are selective for COX 2 only. Although, Dirni (2017) states NSAIDs that block ‘COX-2 may also play a role in mucosal injury’ COX 2, selective NSAIDs are generally considered minimise stomach lining damage. However, these NSIADs definitely stop healing of stomach lining whenever any damage does occur e.g. from drinking alcohol. Although risk varies, all NSAIDs cause some gastrointestinal toxicity. ‘Large pooled data from placebo-controlled trials show that all evaluated NSAIDs including COX-2 inhibitors, diclofenac, ibuprofen and naproxen were associated with an increased risk of gastrointestinal injury‘. The journal ‘Australian Prescriber’ says ‘Gastrointestinal toxicity with NSAIDs, including low-dose aspirin, is highest in patients with risk factors’. Patients should be aware of their own risk factors. ‘These include increased age (>65 years), past history of peptic ulcer disease, heart disease, and co-prescription of antiplatelets, corticosteroids and anticoagulants. In addition, using higher doses of NSAIDs leads to an increased risk of upper gastrointestinal complications. Prolonged NSAID use and H. pylori infection also’ increases risk of gastrointestinal toxicity. Finally, they state ‘NSAIDs use should be at the lowest possible dose and for the shortest time’. Nitric oxide (NO), produced naturally in the stomach from nitrate containing foods (e.g. beetroot juice) may help avert damage. NO mimics prostaglandin functions, and may help maintain stomach lining during NSAID use.

National Veterinary Nurse’s Day On Friday 12th October 2018 we plan to celebrate National Veterinary Nurse’s Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. It is great to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our veterinary nurses. The nurses do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the veterinary hospital. Without the veterinary nurses, we would not be able to do our job as a veterinarian. We plan to celebrate by having a long lunch with enough food to feed an army. We have 8 nurses at the hospital, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital.

Sophie Mead Sophie has been completing her TAFE work experience with us for her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing since June 2016, and joined our team in October 2016 as a Kennel Hand. Sophie started a Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Advanced Studies majoring in Animal and Veterinary Bioscience at Sydney University in Feb 2018, with the aspiration of becoming a veterinarian. We are so proud of Sophie! Sophie has owned a variety of pets throughout her life but has always had a particular fondness for the cats in the family. At the moment, Sophie has 2 dogs (Teddy and Trixie), as well as her 3 very spoiled cats (Angus, Casper and Tallulah). Orchard Hills has become a second home to Sophie, and she loves being able to see the smiling faces of colleagues, clients, and patients alike.

Renai Lewis – Practice Manager Renai has grown up in the Penrith area and has seen many changes over the years. Renai joined the team in August 2014 where she was warmly welcomed by all. Renai has several furbabies including: Alli (Golden Labrador), Cooper (a naughty Labrador), Lenny (a cat) and Flick (a Lorikeet). Renai adores her pets and spends every spare minute with them, when she is not busy being a wife and mum to 4 adult children.

Chelsea Burcher Chelsea completed her Certificate IV in veterinary nursing at Richmond TAFE in June 2018. She started her work placement at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in January 2017 and joined our team in August 2017. Chelsea has always wanted to work with animals since a young age and has one dog, Meg an 8 year old Jack Russell Terrier. Chelsea loves working at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital and being part of the team. She is excited to see what the future holds.

Lizzie De Jonge Lizzie completed the Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in July 2016. Lizzie is currently studying the Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services at the Delta Institute, which is an animal behaviour and training course. Lizzie began teaching the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in Dec 2015. Lizzie is enjoying the study and the hands on experience with Puppy Preschool. Lizzie has had many animals during her life time, at the moment she has 4 cats (Moo Cow, Donut, Chilli and Chicken), and a Labrador cross (Sonny).

Lachlan De Giorgio Lachlan started work at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in December 2017 after completing a week of work experience. Lachlan is currently in year 11 at high school and is really interested in agriculture and all things to do with animals. He has a dog named Chloe and a bird named Bob. Lachlan loves playing sport. He always looks forward to coming to work to help people and see smiles on faces. Lachlan is excited to be part of the team.

Rachel Galdes Rachel graduated as a Veterinary Nurse in December 2012 at Richmond TAFE. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family when she is not at work. Rachel has a much loved Labrador Molly, and Jinx the cat. Rachel teaches the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Jessica Hollman Jessica completed TAFE work experience with us and joined our team in Jan 2015 as a kennel hand. Jessica completed the Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in July

Riley Deahm Riley is currently completing her Certificate IV in veterinary nursing at Richmond TAFE. She started her work placement at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in May 2018 and joined our team in July 2018 as a Kennel Hand. Riley has a naughty Labrador named Baxter, and a cat named Waffles. Riley has always been very passionate about the animal industry. Riley also enjoys working with the other staff members at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. THE LAST WORD

I can remember piecing together the first publication of 2018, and here we are, with only 2 more issues before Christmas arrives! I find October to be the month when reality sets in. Whether it's the warmer weather, the increased number of social festivities, school events ramping up, or the Christmas decorations starting to pop up in every shop you enter... there's no denying that Christmas is just around the corner [again!]. This month, we share plenty of great stories, full of community spirit and local achievements! 'Dance before the music is over'. Bask in the sun and enjoy your Community News.
