The Free Little Lockdown Library is on the Move!

r Goodbye to the much-loved library | Image/Article: Sandy Quealey

What started as a single cabinet with a few books, intended to last for only a couple of weeks of lockdown, quickly turned into five bookcases, a few crates, and overflowing boxes of pure community joy! Operating for just over six weeks, the community support for the Free Little Lockdown Library has been extraordinary, with so many people visiting – whether it be to take a book, leave a book/s, select a plant, share in the lucky dip, even take photos to capture the experience. From single people isolated due to lockdown and young families needing to get out of the house, through to those passing through on their daily walk, not to mention the 95-year-old matriarch attending with her family, the library delivered on its intent. That was to share the love of reading and the love of community in this unprecedented time. However, the Free Little Lockdown Library in Regentville was never meant to be a permanent fixture in Martin Street. While it’s closure on Sunday 12 September was tinged with a little sadness mixed with hope, its positive impact will now be more widespread and longer lasting. Dismantled and distributed to other Penrith locations, expect to see a little street library pop up in an area near you. From one beneficiary, “I promise your community library will go to a good home and will continue to make many children happy”.

Could COVID Offer a Gift?

It all seems bad, and a lot of it is bad. Globally people are suffering and dying. I watched a news report of the struggle families in India face just to get their sick loved ones into a hospital. Imagine someone you loved gasping for oxygen, but not being able to find an oxygen bottle or respirator to save them. Unimaginable. Then there is a report about the economic backwash of the pandemic. Job losses. Small businesses closing. Families struggling to make ends meet. Everyone has their views about COVID-19 itself, lockdowns, vaccination passports, school closures, and how far the government can go in implementing a solution. Some people are faring well in this mess, while others are suffering mental illness. But whatever we think, and however the COVID-19 pandemic has affected us and our families, there is a gift on offer in the middle of it all. The gift is tears of compassion. You may say, “What sort of a gift is that!?” It is the gift of softness toward each other when things are difficult. The gift that unites and strengthens humanity in the face of challenges that threaten our wellbeing. The gift that tells us that it will be okay. It’s an amazing gift because compassion is the heart of God toward each of us. Because of it, our souls can be at rest come what may. FAITH – GRACE WEST ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.gpachurch.online Service Times: Sundays @ 9am, 10.45am and 5pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week. I like to fix things. Lockdown has meant I have noticed more things that are broken. It has also given me more time to fix them. Leaking taps, broken lights and a jammed door are all on the list. My wife, Beth, would love a few more of them to be ticked off the list! I feel these are within my power to achieve. There are problems that are much bigger of course. Relationships that need mending, businesses that are barely afloat and those who are sick with the virus that need healing. If only we could fix the big problems in life. The current lockdown has been humbling. Even with our vaccines, strict lockdowns and social disengagement, the virus has continued to spread. If only we had the power to fix the pandemic! When Jesus came, he clearly had power to fix anything. His power was even over death itself. While it is a very natural thing to want to fix everything around us, we need to see that God is the one who needs to fix us and the world around us. He has promised that one day he will do exactly that. He is the one who fixes our relationship with him through Jesus and who will ultimately fix everything in our world. The fact that we see everything so broken is a reminder that God is the only one who can ultimately fix it all. Online services at 9:30am and 5:00pm, just go to tiny.cc/youtubegracewest

Bayley’s Massive Fundraising Effort

Committing to participate in a fundraiser to help benefit a cause is a selfless act. Now consider doing three fundraisers in a month whilst also studying for your high school certificate and you have someone extraordinary. That’s just what Glenmore Park’s Bayley Baragry is. The local Year 12 student participated in the Black Dog Institute’s Mullets for Mental Health, Camp Quality’s Big Walk for Little Kids and Starlight Children’s Foundation’s Tour de Kids all in the month of September. Mullets for Mental Health involved Bayley growing a mullet, Big Walk for Little Kids was 150kms of walking and Tour de Kids was 500kms of bike riding. All three causes help to raise valuable funds for their charities. “I had different reasons for supporting each charity and their causes,” said Bayley. “With the Black Dog Institute, a lot of people have been suffering mental health issues with COVID-19 over the past two years. It has put people, including my close friends and family, under enormous stress and heartache. “Having had a family member that was older go through Cancer was very hard. I also saw a school mate go through Cancer and it was very upsetting. Anything donated to this cause would help these kids put a smile on their face for Camp Quality. Finally, the Starlight Children’s Foundation is a great cause as it helps to lift kid’s spirits in hospital when they are at their lowest health. Anything to help someone going through this pain” he continued. Bayley has been well supported by his family and friends with his fundraising and they could not be prouder of him. “It’s great to see Bayley helping these causes, and to fit this in while he is completing Year 12 at St Dominic’s College. Our friends, family and community have been donating to the cause and that is fantastic. We as a family are also helping and pushing Bayley to his goals, walking and riding with him. We are very proud of the littlest Baragry of the family” said Jackie Baragry, Bayley’s Mum. City2Surf Goes Virtual in 2021

‘We take the me to care’

Our focus in October at: www.repairsafoot.com.au

House Calls If you have developed foot pain due to altered acvity and changed footwear habits during lockdown, please book in for a biomechanical assessment.

The Sun-Herald City2Surf has confirmed that a physical event will not be possible in 2021, with organisers progressing with a virtual run allowing participants to take on the 14km event in their own neighbourhoods. Unfortunately, in light of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic and current NSW Government restrictions on mass gatherings, it’s not possible for organisers to hold a physical City2Surf as hoped on Sunday 17 October 2021. Participants are being encouraged to run on their local neighbourhood streets between Sunday 17 and Sunday 24 October as part of the City2Surf Virtual Run. Last year more than 13,000 people from across Australia and around the world took part in the first ever City2Surf Virtual Run, with organisers looking forward to welcoming back participants and new to take on the 14km event in a COVID Safe manner. Chris Jarvis, Regional Director of The IRONMAN Group Oceania, organisers of City2Surf, said the Virtual Run will provide a great opportunity for participants to get behind a common goal, not only training for the run but raising vital funds for charities in need. “We had hoped that the situation in Greater Sydney would have improved enough to allow a physical event to take place this October but unfortunately it has become clear that we won’t be in a position to welcome tens of thousands of people to the event in the timeframe at hand,” said Jarvis. “While it’s disappointing that we can’t take to the streets between Sydney’s CBD and Bondi Beach it’s great that we can celebrate the magic of the City2Surf once again with a virtual run”. The City2Surf Virtual Run will provide an opportunity for people to take part in an event in a COVID Safe manner, while also raising much needed funds for those in need. To take part in the City2Surf Virtual Run participants register online, download a dedicated City2Surf Virtual Run app, and then walk, run, dance, or skip the 14km distance wherever they are between 6am AEDT on Sunday 17 October and 6pm AEDT on Sunday 24 October 2021. In 2021 the City2Surf will debut a new brand and website, designed to reflect the fun and excitement associated with this iconic Sydney event. With 50 years of fun behind us, the time is right to start looking towards the future and bring this event to life for the next generation of runners. Entries for the City2Surf Virtual Run are now open. Good Neighbour Program Penrith City Council is again providing an opportunity for residents to stay connected in a safe way through its Good Neighbour Program. The Program encourages residents to check on their neighbours with readymade cards, which can assist in identifying what community members may require while they stay at home during the current Public Health Orders due to COVID-19. Penrith Mayor Karen McKeown OAM said that looking out for one another would keep our community spirit high and help those who have really felt the impact of the ongoing pandemic. “At Council, we understand the ongoing restrictions can be a challenge and maintaining the wellbeing of our residents during this time is of utmost importance,” Cr McKeown said. “These small cards can make a big difference as they allow the community to maintain safe social distancing while connecting with neighbours and offering a helping hand. “Whether you’re heading out to grab some essentials or taking your daily walk, I encourage residents to pop one of these cards in a neighbour’s letterbox – you never know who might need the random show of support”. The isolation cards are available to download at penrith. city/goodneighbour. r An important initiative | Image/Article: Penrith City Council

A Life of Film

It’s a journey that began almost 25 years ago at film school for Glenmore Park’s Ronnie Riskalla and now the talented filmmaker is set to release his second feature film, Streets of Colour. Streets of Colour was filmed in Western Sydney and tells the story of Tez, a 23-year-old soon to be father who is blamed for the death of his best friend Akachi in a racist street fight. “It’s a film about racism, family, self-identity and culture. It explores how the people who surround us can make or break us and set you on the path you will take in life. Streets of Colour is looking to be released late 2021 or 2022” explained Ronnie to the Glenmore Gazette. Ronnie’s passion for film began at the age of just 4 years old, when he first became fascinated with motion pictures. “I can remember back in the early 80’s recording Superman, Star Wars and morning cartoons on my parents Betamax video recorder and that’s when I became fascinated with storytelling” he said. “Since working in film, I have never had a fallback career. I’ve had jobs in the industry, working mainly in cinema for almost 20 years as Chief Projectionist and then worked for a digital film company looking after the release of local and Hollywood films. So, I’ve always stayed close to my passion making films whilst also juggling a day job” continued Ronnie. With the recent announcement of an anticipated film studio to be built at Penrith Lakes, Ronnie believes this will be great for the Australian Film Industry. “I think it’s extremely exciting. Western Sydney has a lot of creatives in the arts, and I know this will boost the economy and we will finally have a new film hub for filmmakers. This will create so many opportunities for people who never dreamed of going into film or tv because it seems like a fantasy in Australia. “It’s a very bright future and my team at SkyCross Entertainment and I are looking at getting a small studio space there in the future” he beamed. In between the release of Streets of Colour, Ronnie will be going into pre-production for his third feature film later this year. He also has a small business that can transfer your old tapes to USB or DVD. “This is really the best time to get those VHS and camera tapes out to be digitized. I’ve been telling people that they will fade and get worse with time, so if you have tapes, photos, film reels, DVD’s that you want to convert, we can get them converted to USB or DVD at an affordable price for you”. Keeping Children Safe Online: Who Are They Talking to? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of COVID-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. This month, we continue our three-part series on keeping children safe online. On the 3rd of September, ten additional police officers joined the Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad to address a rise in online sex crimes against children. In a statement released by the NSW Police, Child Abuse and Sex Crimes Squad Commander Detective Superintendent Jayne Doherty attributed this concerning trend to children spending additional time at home online unsupervised. “The best tool to ensure your child’s safety is you. Make sure they know they can tell you about anything that makes them uncomfortable and that any app, game or social media platform where they speak to other people can put them at risk,” Det Supt Doherty said. Many seemingly innocuous apps and games include chat functions which allow anyone in the world to contact your child. Before installing any app or game, do your research and ensure you maximise privacy settings. The Carly Ryan Foundation provides detailed, up-to-date information for parents on specific apps and games. These guides include step-by-step instructions on how to operate configure privacy settings on the apps. These free fact sheets can be downloaded from carlyryanfoundation.com. In addition to maximising privacy settings on apps, you need to supervise children when they access the internet. It is best to always supervise small children (under 5 years old) physically when they use internet-enabled devices. Primary aged school children should be encouraged to ask you to access devices, and you need to know where they are and what they are doing when they log on onto the web. I highly discourage allowing primary aged school children to access the internet in their bedroom with the door closed. As children grow older, regular conversations about online safety continue to be essential. For more information, visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website on https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents.

Mighty Matilda Excels in the Pool

Glenmore Park student Matilda Mobbs continues to set the junior swimming world alight, smashing a 16-year long state record at a club event this year. She has also qualified to compete in the National Age Championships in multiple events and dreams of one day representing Australia at the Paralympic Games. Matilda, who was diagnosed with Spina Bifida at a young age, broke a 16-year long state record in June and is now the NSW State 13 Years & Under S8 400m Freestyle SC record holder. Her time of 7.14 in the 400m event beat the previous record of 8.33. “Due to COVID-19 cancellations, Matilda hasn’t been able to compete as much as she would normally. She has still managed to bring home 7 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze medal and the Nepean Aquatic Swim Club Captains Female Swimmer Award” said Cassie Mobbs, Matilda’s Mum. “Matilda was selected by the Club Captains to award her the Female Swimmer Award because she has shown above other athletes in the club, determination to push herself in training and in competition” added Jackie Barck, Matilda’s Coach at Nepean Aquatic Centre. With lockdown restrictions limiting Matilda’s time in the pool, she has introduced a dryland strength program to her training. This has assisted in developing her balance and co-ordination skills. “Although Matilda qualified to compete at this year’s National Age Championships, given her age and expected circumstances, we decided not to compete but have continued training through as best we can, given the lockdown restrictions and pool situation” explained Jackie. Her focus is now on the National Age Championships in April 2022, where she will work hard to improve her times in training and to aim for selection in the NSW Paralympic Development Program. “Improvements in her 400m freestyle time will come from endurance and continued work in her technique. Breaking her own record each time that she competes in that event will keep her on target,” said Jackie. Matilda’s swimming idol and Australian Paralympic Athlete Ellie Cole also had a special message for her on television during the recent 2020 Tokyo Paralympic Games. “I was speechless and blown away. I couldn’t believe that Ellie remembered and mentioned me with everything she had going on. She really is the best! When I raced against her in the 400m freestyle early this year, she was so supportive and told me she would always be in my corner” ended Matilda. r Feature Article [Cover] Matilda with her medals for this year and the Australian Swimsuit [Left] Matilda & Ellie Cole at Sydney Olympic Park Aquatic Centre, NSW Senior State Championships in March 2021 | Images: Cassie Mobbs

Chloe’s Heartfelt Act

This month marks National Bandanna Day. Bandanna Day is held on Friday 29th October and is the flagship fundraising and awareness campaign for Canteen. Chloe Posadas of Glenmore Park will be taking part in the fundraiser in memory of her late friend Tara. Bandanna Day raises funds through sponsorships and the selling of bandannas which enables Canteen, as an organisation to support young people with cancer. Canteen assists young people following their diagnosis, as well as their family members who are closely linked with the challenges cancer brings. “This can be supported by accepting the challenge to cut, colour, or cover your hair. I will be cutting my hair to support this cause. My aim is to raise money for Canteen through fundraising donations received from family, friends and my local community” stated Chloe. Chloe’s motivation to participate in Bandanna Day is her former school friend Tara, who sadly passed away from cancer earlier this year. “Tara was adventurous, intelligent, generous, selfless and was constantly radiating positivity and kindness. She was determined to give everything her absolute all and poured her heart and soul into all projects. She was inspiring, and I have never met anyone as brave as her” she reflected. The community have already got behind Chloe with her fundraiser, enabling her to increase her goal. “Since first sharing my fundraiser, I have changed the set goal multiple times as I reach targets and received lots of support from family and friends. My goal now sits at $3,000, but I am incredibly grateful and excited for any amount my page reaches” Chloe explained. “Any type and size of support is extremely valued and helps young people like Tara get the support they need through such tough times” she ended. If you would like to support Chloe for Bandanna Day, visit her personal fundraising link at https://www.bandannaday.org.au/ fundraisers/chloeposadas. r

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Can Good Diet Benefit Migraine and Regular Headache? Migraines are often triggered by something. In a study by Kelman (2007) patients listed 15 frequent migraine triggers. Clearly, the majority of these are diet/lifestyle related factors, which means we can do something about them. 7 of 15 factors can be directly or indirectly influenced by diet. Food, not eating and alcohol intake are dietary choices. Sleep disturbances (think zinc insufficiency), neck-pain, stress-perception, and hormonal factors can be influenced to varying degrees by diet. Four factors: smoking, exercise, sexual activity, and sleeping late, are clearly lifestyle choices. Only 4 factors, weather, perfumes/odours, lights, and heat are environmental, yet these too could be controlled/avoided. To illustrate the powerful effect of diet on migraine and headache symptoms, let’s review the case of a 39-year-old woman who attended the clinic suffering 2.5 days of migraine-headaches, plus 4.5 days of non-migraine headaches weekly. She was struggling to work and regularly taking Maxalt (rizatriptan), Nurofen, Valium, and aspirin, along with MigraineCare (a nutritional supplement) to deal with symptoms. The patient consumed alcohol regularly, had considerable gastrointestinal issues, and extremely painful and tight muscles, yet was fit and exercised vigorously daily. Note: although exercise can reduce migraine frequency, intensity, and duration, in a cruel twist, exercise can promote non-migraine headaches, and increase symptoms of muscle-pain and tightness, especially if diet is inadequate. The patient wanted to undertake only dietary change and didn’t want any deeper remedial therapy (although this would have been beneficial) as she was particularly sensitive to any type of pain. Thus, this case is an excellent example of the large influence simple diet/lifestyle changes ‘by themselves’ can have on headache and migraine symptoms. We analysed the patient’s current dietary pattern via diet diary, identified shortcomings, then prescribed a healthful eating pattern, plus key dietary supplements. The patient agreed to abstain from alcohol, and moderated exercise to reasonable levels. At a follow up appointment after 5 months on the new dietary protocol, the patient indicated that she had suffered no migraines and just one regular headache and required no medications at any time in the previous month. Her muscle pain and tightness had improved significantly as had gastrointestinal symptoms. r

Thank You to Our Wonderful Clients Camille and the staff at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital would like to say a huge thank you to our wonderful clients for their understanding and support during the COVID-19 lockdowns. During the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been performing contactless consultations – this means that a nurse meets you in the carpark and collects your pet, then takes them inside to be seen by the veterinarian, while you wait in the carpark. This is done to accommodate for social distancing and to ensure that we remain safe and operating during the pandemic. We understand that it is not ideal to hand over your beloved pet, whether they are unwell or just for a routine checkup, but we are so grateful that you trust us to look after them and provide the care that they require. We want you to know that your pets are being loved and comforted by all members of staff during their visits. We feel so lucky to be able to see and cuddle so many cats, dogs, and rabbits! You may have experienced some extended wait times during the pandemic, but we would love to share with you what is happening behind closed doors! We have done so many things, including delivering a litter of Boxer puppies in an emergency caesarean, triaging sick patients, vaccinating, and microchipping litters of kittens and puppies, various orthopaedic surgeries, helping a cheeky Australian Shepherd vomit up a couple of socks, the list goes on! We are so thankful that we have been able to remain open and available to look after your pets during these unprecedented times. We can’t wait for this all to be over and to be able to see all of your faces again! Until then, we will continue to look after your pets all while being as safe as possible.

Emergency Services

October brings with it sun filled days, picnics and ‘friend bubbles’. As vaccination rates climb, so do the hopes of many in anticipation of the much talked about ‘Freedom Day’. After 3 long months of lockdown it seems that we are on the cusp of some sort of ‘normality’. While life will never truly return to what was, this process and time has helped prepare us all for living ‘with’ Covid. Some have witnessed heartbreak and loss during these tough times while others have had to learn to pivot and adapt to changing times; all of us together have had to adopt new ways. We thank our loyal advertisers and readers for continuing to support us through these challenging times of late. It’s your support that has kept us in over 27,000 letterboxes across 20 suburbs and 83,000 readers! By supporting our advertisers, you support us! And for this, we THANK you. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News. Accept what is, let go of what was and have faith in what will be.
