The hugely popular Western Sydney market, which has venues at Emu Plains and Rooty Hill, has welcomed Glenmore Park Town Centre as its third destination, kicking off on Saturday, the 1st of September. Our community will have the opportunity to visit The Westies Market Glenmore Park on the first Saturday of the month from 9:00am till 2:00pm. “We wanted to bring Glenmore Park a shopping experience that gave residents a chance to support their local makers and creators. It is a fantastic community with lots of talent” said Katrina James of The Westies Market. Market goers can expect lots of high quality, locally designed and produced items. From eclectic handbags and accessories to hand stitched kids clothing and bespoke homewares. You will find the perfect present for someone or a gift for yourself. Other attractions include the Music in the Gardens performances held from 1pm in the gorgeous grounds of the Waldorf Leura Gardens Resort on each of the festival days and including the Sydney Mandolin Orchestra and the Heathens Choir of Blackheath. Entry will be by way of a gold coin donation. Visitors can also take home a permanent memento of the festival from the Plant Sales Centre which will this year feature plants from several new participating nurseries, providing a much wider range of both native and exotic species. The centre will also have on sale metal garden art and an interesting range of garden tools. Also of interest is the Art Show presented by the Society of Mountain Artists featuring work created in the gardens during the Festival. Glenmore Park FC Under 12’s Make History
Our Commitment to Give Back
At District Gazette, we have chosen to align ourselves with a charity that is very close to our hearts. We support the Lung Foundation Australia, by giving a percentage of all advertising revenue and hosting fundraising events to support Idiopathic Pulmonary Fibrosis, through their IPF Program. In memory of the late, courageous, strong and determined, Wendy Frame
The Glenmore Park FC Under 12’s Division 1 soccer team were recently crowned the first ever team in the local club’s 25-year history to win the prestigious title of Football NSW State Cup Champions. The Grand Final was played at Valentine Park in Glenwood in late July, where they defeated Enfield Rovers Football Club 4-0. The Football NSW State Cup is a knockout competition (on top of the normal club competition) where they played against high level soccer teams from around the State. Their journey commenced back in May, where the team fought many tough games. With each win, they continued to keep their goal in sight. On the day, the boys were focused, and they played strong. The Under 12’s were leading 3-0 at half time and they never gave up fighting, winning their 50/50 challenges and holding possession. “You could hear the moans and groans from the boys as they kicked the ball and ran in for a challenge. To then sink another goal and later hear the final whistle knowing they had won was amazing. The team showed sportsmanship with three cheers for Enfield players and supporters, then acknowledged their own coaching staff, parents and supporters” said a team spokesperson. The Under 12’s Division 1 boys pride themselves on a variety of things that make them a team; pride and fun but most of all possession, teamwork and hunger. They continue to use these key play concepts in their Saturday club competition, gaining them the top of the ladder for 2018, which enables them to play Football NSW Champions of Champions competition commencing this month. The team has had a very successful year and are also due to play the Grand Final of the Nepean Football Association, Nepean Cup competition on Thursday 6th September at Cook Park in St Marys. The Glenmore Gazette would like to wish the boys the best of luck for their continued success this season. The local community are proud off their hard work and dedication and they are all an inspiration to the Glenmore Park Football Club.

Happy 150th Birthday Regentville Public School As the School Captains of Regentville Public School, we would love to tell you about this year’s 150 celebration. Where to start? This event will be filled with so many wonderful interactions for the entire family! It will be held on 26th September from 9.00am to 8:30pm. During the school hours, every child will be participating in Regentville Rocks, a big performance involving kindergarten to Year 6 students. Each year is different and even better than before. Believe it or not, Regentville Rocks has been going for 18 years. There will also be an art show, The Book Fair and countless other activities. Not to mention the honoured guests we invited to come and celebrate the special day with us. After hours, it’s just fun, fun, and more fun. From delicious food trucks on the oval, to Ned’s Revenge Bush Band playing numerous songs to your heart’s content. But that’s not all. Everywhere around the school there will be QR code history walks telling you about the past, present and future. So, all in all it’s going to be an amazing day. It all started in 1868. The gates opened. Sir John Jamison; the founder of Regentville donated the ground on which our school first stood. Our first principal Jane Whitaker proudly stood at the gates and welcomed the 26 students on their first day of school. 22 principals and over 300 teachers later, we come to where we are today. As well as the 690 children who are at our school and continuing to grow with Regentville. We are so excited to see you at the 150 celebration! Yours sincerely, Mia and Harrison. 2018 Regentville Public School Captains Regentville Public School | Image Supplied

PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com “Parenting is a balance of taking charge and being kind.” (Circle of Security) We don’t need to be mean to parent effectively but there are times when we do need to take charge. The rest of the time we can be kind. Sometimes we have to set boundaries and limits for our children to keep them safe and well. It’s an important part of parenting, and an important part of a child’s development. Children feel safer when we put reasonable limits on them, and they expect it of us. Some of the angriest children I have worked with are those whose behaviour is an attempt to get Mum or Dad involved in managing their behaviour. His “out-of-control” behaviour is his way of trying to get Mum or Dad to take more control. And what does “out-of-control” look like? A child hitting you, being angry with you, screaming at you, telling you that she hates you, running away from you. Anger is fear expressed in a loud manner. When a child perceives a parent as ‘weak’, unable to take charge, the child feels unsafe, so she ramps up her behaviour to try to force the parent to take responsibility for setting the limits. However, some parents have a really difficult time doing this. The parent may have grown up with a parent who was harsh, punitive, and mean, and does not want to be like that person, so she flounders when it comes to setting boundaries and limits and guiding and educating her child. When the parent flounders, the child flounders. The child has a limited experience of life, so out of frustration and anger he resorts to yelling and hitting you to get you to take notice. If negative attention is all the child gets, then she will seek more of it through her behaviour. ‘Punishment’ does imply being mean. I ask parents to focus on ‘discipline’. The word ‘discipline’ originated from the Latin word ‘disciplina’ and it meant instruction and knowledge, and to learn. And what do you want your child to learn? Self-control. When children learn self-control they learn balance, calm, persistence, and confidence. Is that the kind of kid you want to send out into the world? Setting boundaries and limits for your child can be done in a calm and methodical manner. It does require you to be consistent, immediate, and decisive. It also requires you to role model selfcontrol. You calmly and quickly deal with the behaviour, so you can enjoy more of the good stuff (relationship, connection, fun) with your child.

Six-year-old Glenmore Park student Charles Fawcett has topped the national rankings in Kumon Mathematics, achieving first place nationally in the Australia wide program. Charles, who currently attends Kumon at South Penrith under the tutorage of Mary Cassasco and her team twice a week, had previously ranked second on three occasions, despite placing first in New South Wales. “Charles dreams of representing Australia in the International Mathematics Olympiad. He enjoys looking for odd patterns in maths and proposing conjectures. He’s excited about furthering his studies and learning from and about top mathematicians” said Matt Fawcett, Charles’s father. The talented student became a member of Mensa at just 4 years of age, after being assessed professionally for cognitive ability. When he’s not studying mathematics, Charles loves drawing, playing piano, watching game shows and cooking shows and of course, playing in the park. His favourite subjects apart from mathematics are reading, science, art and Chinese. If you have a child who is a budding mathematician with an interest in maths and want to take that next step, Matt has this advice,“Give them support and encouragement. If the child shows a level of giftedness, find a way of extending and challenging them. We have been lucky with Charles because Mary Carrasco and her team at South Penrith have been amazingly patient with him. He is still a 6-year-old, but he started just after his 4th birthday. Mary assessed him at the age of 3 years and 10 months and was greatly impressed with his ability even then”. The Glenmore Gazette wishes Charles all the best in his mathematics endeavours and his dream of one day representing Australia.

At long last, Spring arrives. We often think of this season as a time to throw open the windows and let the fresh air in while doing a big tidy up around the house. What a great idea! But, don’t stop there. It’s also the perfect time to take stock of yourself by refreshing your mind and body as well. Here are a few ideas for trading a winter sedentary lifestyle for a fresh season of healthy living: Use lawn maintenance as exercise - gardening, weeding, mowing will get you outside and moving around AND spruce the garden at the same time. Create an outdoor entertaining space - get some comfy seating and eat more meals outside, hang out with the family or friends, take your laptop outdoors to work or better yet, just relax and read a book. Try a new outdoor activity - this is a great time to try something new like yoga, hiking, swimming, biking, golf or kayaking. Practise mindfulness - learn to meditate, keep a gratitude journal or write affirmations. It’s important to declutter the mind, heart and soul. Change your diet - drink more water and add a springy touch to meals. This Spring, definitely dust off those cobwebs in the house, but make sure to take time to shake off some of those old bad habits and make way for a new you. Image: www.pexels.com. Get Set for Brooke’s Car Rally Brooke’s Car Rally Event Organiser and Glenmore Park resident Brooke Jones has big plans for the next rally which takes place on Sunday the 18th of November, after raising an incredible $15,203 at last year’s fundraiser. With 2018 marking the 6th Brooke’s Car Rally, Brooke has helped to raise over $55,000 since it began and has set a target of $10,000 to raise this year for the Nepean Cancer Care Centre. “This year, I am supporting the Nepean Cancer Care Centre again. I believe it is important, so many of our local people need the service. Nearly everyone knows of someone who has had cancer and I believe it is a major cause that needs our help” explained Brooke to the Glenmore Gazette. Participants in Brooke’s Car Rally can expect a lot of fun. Following directions, stopping to collect items and solving cryptic clues will help lead them to the secret destination where there will be more fun and games. A barbecue sponsored by Outback Steakhouse in Penrith will be there once again to feed the hungry adventure makers. The popular local charity event takes up to 6 months of careful planning and preparation. With many supporters coming together from as far away as Cobar in the west and Kiama in the south, it’s an event not to be missed. “The local community can get involved in this year’s event by registering on my website www.brookescarrally.com after the 1st of September. The cost is $15.00 per vehicle and you can order your lunch when you register. I hope to see you all there” said Brooke. To keep up to date, follow their Facebook page. A GoFundMe page will also be set up for those who wish to donate. Brooke and her family | Image: https://www.facebook.com/brookecarrallyfundraising

HEALTH MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269
NSAID – Can They Increase Your Risk of Having a Heart Attack or Stroke? From my previous article we know that taking NSAIDs provides no improvement in pain scores or function long term. But, let’s take a look at another reason why you may not want to take NSAIDs longer term. Vioxx, withdrawn from sale in Australia in 2005, provides cautionary tale. Vioxx was on the market for 4 years in Australia, doctors writing nearly 10-million prescriptions in that time. The figures for Australia are unknown, but in the US, Vioxx caused up to 140000 heart attacks, and up to 40,000 deaths. But what of other NSAIDs? A 2013 study in the Lancet showed that all NSAIDs increased cardiovascular risk, including mortality, myocardial infarction, and stroke. This includes newer drugs such as celecoxib (Celebrex). Older drugs diclofenac (Voltaren), ibuprofen (Advil and Motrin) actually doubled cardiovascular risks. Chris Cannon MD, recently stated in the medical publication Practice Update, ‘anyone who thinks ibuprofen is “safe,â€? beware’. Harvard medical school summarises the FDA warnings for NSAIDs as follows: • Heart attack and stroke risks increase even with short-term use • Risk may increase within a few weeks of starting NSAIDs • Risk increases: o when NSAIDs are taken for longer periods o with increasing NSAID dose • Even people without heart disease may be at risk • Risk is greatest for people who already have heart disease
• Previous studies have suggested naproxen may be safer; more recent evidence questions the certainty of this Note: these warnings don’t apply to Aspirin, which may be beneficial for cardiovascular disease. It’s often my older patients who tend to rely on NSAIDs. But they are also much more likely to have chronic conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, obesity or diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, & sometimes a strong family history of heart disease. Such disorders already increase their risk developing heart attack or stroke. Taking NSAIDs for pain simply adds more risk. Harvard Med School provided the following advice: • If you have heart disease avoid NSAIDS if at all possible. Even so‌ • Take the lowest effective dose • Limit the time you take NSAIDs • Never take more than one type of NSAID at a time • Use acetaminophen (relieves pain without increased heart attack or stroke risk) • If nothing else works, try taking week-long “holidaysâ€? from your NSAIDs, take acetaminophen instead • If you experience chest pain, shortness of breath, or sudden weakness or difficulty speaking while taking an NSAID, seek medical help immediately. Much of the pain for which NSAIDs are used comes from poor lifestyle choices over a long time. Diet is a key factor here, exercise also. If you’re suffering chronic pain why not call us at the clinic

FAITH - FOOTHILLS VINEYARD CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Pastor Paul Marshall W: www.fvc.org.au Sunday Service Time: 9:30am @ Regentville Public School | Christmas Service: 9am @ Regentville Public School
Being Deliberate About Life There is a saying: If you aim for nothing, you will probably hit it. And unless we are deliberate about what we do with our lives, we can end up spending it on things that don’t really matter. The reason for this is that life is so demanding and hectic that it swallows up our time, energy and resources before we have time to think about what we are doing with the precious minutes and days God has given us. To be deliberate about life we need to be honest and ask questions like these: Does what we are doing really matter? How are we making the world a better place? Are we spending time with those we love, and in what ways does our life enrich them? Are we doing to others what we would want them to do to us? What sort of a legacy are we creating? Will what we are doing with our life leave us with regret that we didn’t live it differently? Does
what we are doing make us feel excited and thankful about being alive? Are we happy? If we aim for nothing, we will probably hit it. And I often meet people with a restless sense in their soul that their life is being under-lived. At the same time, they seem to struggle to be able to find a compass to direct them beyond this inner restlessness. What is there beyond the life our society demands us to live? The rhythms and values of this life become like a rut that we get caught in. Our souls can become restless knowing there is a better way, but we can’t find it. In the Bible Jesus teaches that when we open our lives to him, he will be a light or an inner compass showing the way to a life that will cause our souls to come alive. We must be deliberate about life if we want to live it well.
FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.glenmoreparkanglican.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week.
To Whom Shall We Go? Jesus has always been someone to whom people are drawn. His message, life, and character are so radically different, so compelling that he continues to stand out as a unique person in history. Throughout history, millions of people have made, and continue to make the decision to commit their life to Jesus. Yet, there are many who check him out, but for one reason or another they are unable to continue to walk with him. Jesus has always been controversial. The decision to follow Jesus is a simple one, yet, that decision is massive in its implications. In the Bible’s book of John we read of a time when the crowd was struggling to come to terms with some of the challenging things Jesus was saying. John tells us that Jesus, aware of this, asks his disciples, “You do not want to leave too, do you? The Apostle Peter, often the spokesman, gives an extraordinary answer; “Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life. We
believe and know that you are the Holy One of God. In the 20 years that my wife and I have been at Glenmore Park, we have had the privilege of seeing many people come to know Jesus just as the Apostle Peter did, as the one who has “the words of eternal life. But sadly, we have also seen many people investigate Jesus and for one reason or another not be able to stick with him. In the week beginning Sunday 27th September, at Glenmore Park Anglican Church we are having a “Back to Church week or B2C. It is a week where we are inviting “Back to Church all those people who at one time did come and check out Jesus but weren’t able to stay. We’d love you to come and take another look at Jesus, the one who came to give eternal life to any person who would trust in him.

THE LAST WORD
Well hellooooooooo Spring! And do we have a BUMPER edition for you! Loaded with brilliant articles about amazing and inspirational locals, right here from our own backyard! Not to mention a mouth-watering Meringue recipe for the sweet-tooths amongst us, in What's Cooking on page 10. September is without a doubt the month of markets. Glenmore Park is dishing up some amazing excuses to get ones self out and about as the weather begins to warm up. I know for one, I am extremely excited to know that a Farmers Market has now arrived in our very own backyard! What’s not to love ? Read more on page 11. As C.S. Lewis once said 'You can't go back and change the beginning, but you can start where you are and change the ending.' Find some sunshine and enjoy your Community News.
