FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www. glenmoreparkanglican.com.au. Sea Change

Have you ever felt inside, “There must be more than this!” Now, I don’t have a gloomy view of the world. I am with Louis Armstrong in thinking to myself, ”What a wonderful world!” When the sun breaks through in the morning and birds from the Mulgoa Reserve behind our home are darting about, I can see the beauty of it all. And this is a hint that we are made for more than the logistics of life. We are made to appreciate beauty, and this is why our hearts flood with good feelings and joy when the sun and the birds are doing their beautiful thing. We are made for more than sexual gratification. We are made for love – our soul soars when others believe in the possibility of our life, believe in the value of us, and show it with their words and actions. The liberating effect and empowerment of true love again tells us we are made for more than the logistics of practical life. The deep sense of meaning I get from the love I feel for my kids says it too. The Bible teaches that we are made for a relationship with God. There is a Godshaped hole inside each of us, and until we allow God to fill it, we will have a gnawing sense inside of us that “There must be more than this!” The Bible also teaches that God is love and given the way the human soul soars when it is touched by true love, it adds up that God is the “more” every human soul craves. If you desire more let me leave you with some wisdom from the teachings of Jesus Christ who taught, “Seek and you will find.” Go well in your pursuit of more, Paul

GUESS WHO’S

The popular TV show ‘Sea Change’ recently returned to our screens after an almost 20-year absence. When it began way back in 1998 its great popularity reflected the desire of many people to get away from the city rat race, seeking change by escaping the pressure of city life and hopefully to make things better. The show echoes this desire to make a fresh start in life. So many people wish their life could be better, different. So many people hunger for a ‘Sea Change’ but the question is where will it come from? At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, one of the truly great things that each person in our Church could testify to, is that in knowing and following Jesus, there is this opportunity for a fresh start. Jesus gives all people a real chance to make that ‘Sea Change’ – to start life all over again – and without the cost of having to sell and buy a new house! In the Bible’s book of 2 Corinthians, the writer spells out the significance of Jesus. He says, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” Here in a few words is the ‘Sea Change’ so many are looking for. New life! A fresh start! Forgiveness with God! Having your guilt washed away! The confident, sure hope of a glorious new life with God! The promise of peace with God! The secure knowledge that nothing will separate you from the love of God! Although living by the sea has a lot to offer, you can have that ‘Sea Change’ a long way from the sea! The ‘Sea Change’ you have been looking for is found in Jesus. Because of the significance of who Jesus and what he has done for us, at our Church we are always wanting to speak about him, but on Sundays in September we’ll be especially focusing on Jesus; the significance of his birth, life, death and resurrection. We’d love to see you so you too can experience this wonderful ‘Sea Change.’

Glenmore Park Public School has welcomed the Glenmore Park Breakfast Club, a new initiative that has been developed to support the well-being of their students. Breakfast Club provides a relaxed and friendly environment where students can sit with their friends and enjoy a meal together. It is free and open to all students at the school, regardless of whether they have already had breakfast. Students are provided with cereal, toast and fruit. The food is donated by Glenmore Park Woolworths, Coles and Bakers Delight. Local charity WestCare have generously donated the equipment required to set up the initiative. “In order for students to have the best opportunity to learn, it is essential they start the day with a healthy breakfast. Breakfast Club started last month and is currently being held on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. On our launch day, we had 100 students participate and on our second day, it had grown to 120 students” said Natalie Watson, Learning Support Teacher at Glenmore Park Public School. The announcement of Breakfast Club was made on the school’s Facebook page and it was received with a lot of positive praise from within the community. Natalie explained, “Our set up in the hall is inviting and cosy with picnic blankets and music to make students feel welcome. They absolutely love it! We have been inundated with staff members volunteering their help to set up, serve and pack up. It’s such a wonderful way to start the school day”. The program was organised by Maybelle Galuvao, the school’s Student Well-being Officer. Maybelle joined the school to target the well-being of its students and to help get some exciting new initiatives off the ground, with the Breakfast Club being the first. “Our Well-being team is excited to work with Maybelle and the vibe amongst staff, students and the community is absolutely amazing” cheered Natalie. The school’s goal is to continue Breakfast Club for three days a week, with the view to hopefully run it next term from Monday to Friday. They have already recruited lots of student helpers and now plan to generate a roster for the students to follow next term. r Feature Article [Cover] Glenmore Park Public School students enjoy breakfast together [Above] Natalie Watson (Learning Support Teacher) helps serve breakfast with a student | Images Supplied

Local Glenmore Park band The Jestas are a group of young musicians going places, after recently celebrating making the semi-finals of the 2019 YouthRock Band Competition at Bankstown Sports Club. YouthRock, an official event for NSW Youth Week, is a music competition for teenage contemporary bands to write and perform their own music. The Jestas are made up of four members which are Ben Wilson on rhythm guitar, Caitlyn Kitchin on drums/vocals, Jesse Gerhard on lead guitar/vocals and Rafaela Safadi on bass guitar/ vocals. They are a rock band, performing classic and modern rock. “To enter YouthRock, the band had to submit a performance video of an original song. All music performed throughout YouthRock had to be written, composed and performed by the kids themselves - their own lyrics and music” said Rachel Byrne, band representative of The Jestas. “They made it to the semi-final live performances and were up against 7 other school bands on the night. There were 3 semi-finals in total. Only 2 bands from each semi-final made it through. Unfortunately, they didn’t make it through to the grand finale, but they were very proud and grateful to have made it as far as they did. We could not be any prouder of them too” explained Rachel. All four members of the band are currently studying music together at Glenmore Park High School. They formed the band in 2017, whilst in year 10. They started performing at school events and have since performed at other schools, restaurants, clubs and are often the support/opening act for the band RockOz. In between doing their HSC, they get together every weekend for band practice and rehearsals and continue to do live performances whenever they can. “There has been a lot invested into the band and they hope to make a big impact in the music industry after leaving school” Rachel ended. Out of this World Experience for Ryan

17-year-old student Ryan Le Roy, from Regentville, was recently selected to participate in the 2019 International Science School (ISS) Frontier Science at the University of Sydney, where he undertook a two-week residential program of talks, tours, activities and social events with world-renowned science professionals. Ryan was chosen as one of 140 of the top science students from both Australia and around the world to take part in the program. “I was recommended by my chemistry teacher at school to apply for the ISS program for the Winter break and had to supply documentation of my previous achievements and academic results. After waiting three months, I was chosen as one of 140 international students from the thousands of applications” explained Ryan. “During the program, I was able to engage with some of the greatest minds from the 21st century, ranging from NASA Flight Director Matt Abbott to Astronomer Jocelyn Bell Burnell. There were many talks about up and rising frontiers of science that included quantum computing to genomics. Apart from the lectures, I was also able to take part in various workshops that varied from DNA sequencing through to astronomy” he added. The intensive science-based program allowed Ryan to work with professionals and study new fields that he had never previously considered before as a career. After completing his studies at Jamison High School, Ryan plans to study a Masters Degree in Biomedical Engineering at the University of Sydney, where he hopes to utilise his experience in innovating the industry of prosthetics and supply aid to those in need. r Ryan Le Roy | Image: Jamison High School

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com

Are you an Angry Parent? It seems that every day, we are reminded of how people are becoming more intolerant, aggressive, and unkind. The other day, a young fella in a car behind me was becoming impatient at my persistence to stick to the speed limit. He sped around me, ran a red light, and nearly collected a pedestrian on the bonnet of his car. I caught up with him at the next traffic light. Was it really necessary to become so aggressive and impatient? Anger is a normal human emotion. It is not ‘bad’. However, sometimes we make poor choices when we are angry. Sustained anger is no good for you or anybody else. The stress and strain that anger causes in your brain and body affects your physical, mental and emotional wellbeing, and it damages relationships. Children learn from our example. When we yell or hit, children learn that yelling or hitting is the way to manage conflict. Children are not born with conflict resolution skills. They learn them from us, which means we have to teach conflict resolution skills to our kids and more importantly we have to role model them. Most child behaviour does not require an immediate response from you. You can take the time to centre yourself by breathing and grounding yourself before you choose to respond (rather than react). If your child is about to walk in front of a car or hit her brother on the head with a truck, feel free to react quickly, but this doesn't need to be done in a mean or aggressive way either. The skills that all humans need to learn to get along better with others includes: managing strong emotions; calming down; assertiveness; and problem solving. If you are really struggling with strong emotions, I have started a Mindful Parenting series on the blog https:// handshear tsminds.wordpress.com/categor y/mindfulparenting/

LEARN TO

Does My Child Need Tutoring?

WHY CHOOSE US

 Team of Qualified Aquatic Educators committed to water safety.  We cater to the individual needs of your child.  We believe in matching the instructor to the students.  We create a positive and productive environment for learning.

The question of whether you should get tutoring for your child is not able to be answered with a stock response. Not every child will benefit from tutoring and certainly not from some styles; however, many children thrive with tutoring as it can provide the key to confidence and ‘fill in the gaps’ within their learning. Often the term tutoring is used interchangeably with coaching. Whilst this is widely accepted, coaching generally refers to repetitive or drill learning with the intention of gaining achievement in a test or assessment, whereas tutoring is more remedial and focused on bridging a gap in learning. Tutoring is also great for students who enjoy learning and want to extend their thinking laterally, especially in Mathematics. If your child is struggling with confidence in an area, then tutoring is something you could consider. If your child seems to really be struggling academically at school then tutoring can make a positive impact; however, it is important to look at other factors first before taking the tutoring route. Speak to your child’s teacher about specific difficulties and whether the school can address them adequately. Some specific difficulties are best treated by an occupational therapist (OT), a psychologist, speech therapist or doctor. If these needs are not addressed, tutoring can often appear ineffective. Depending on where you access your tutoring, you can expect different approaches. Large franchises may have set programs they implement, and smaller businesses or individuals may offer personalised services based on the individual needs of the student. Some tutoring companies only offer group programs whilst others provide a one-to-one service. Most students flourish with personalised instruction in a one-to-one setting with a tutor who is knowledgeable and experienced, but this will generally incur a higher cost than tutoring in a small group led by a university student. When choosing a tutor, think about which approach suits your child best and be sure to ask questions. Tutoring should be a collaboration towards meeting your child’s individual needs. For more information about tutoring, visit edUcatered on Facebook or www.educatered.com.au. r Tutoring can help your child to gain confidence and understanding. Think Spring – Think Leura!

KOBHI'S KITCHEN

Hi everyone! My name is Kobhi and I am 9 years old. I love to help my Mum and Dad cook yummy food in the kitchen. Each month, I will share with you some of my favourite recipes. Oh yeah, make sure you always have an adult helping you cook. P.S I hope you enjoy making this. Kobhi

dad's green chicken pasta

Ingredients

One packet of spinach fettuccine (500g) 500g of boneless chicken breast One cup of cream Three tablespoons of fresh basil pesto One tablespoon of olive oil Method

1. Your adult helper needs to boil a pot of water. Once the pot is hot, they can add the packet of spinach fettuccine. 2. My Mum does the next step too. She cuts up the chicken breast into strips. Next, she adds the olive oil to a pan and then cooks the chicken breast. The chicken breast is cooked until it is brown or as Mum says ‘golden’ 3. Add three tablespoons of fresh basil pesto to the chicken in the pan. Make sure the chicken is covered all over with the pesto. I love the smell of pesto! 4. Pour one cup of cream into the pan and mix it with the pesto and the chicken. Let it bubble for a bit. I think they call that simmering. 5. The spinach fettuccine should be ready now. Drain the water. Mum puts it in one of those things with holes in it to help it drain. 6. Add the spinach fettuccine to the chicken and mix it. 7. Ready to Serve

Calling all Book Worms! Do you enjoy reading books? Would you like to join a Book Club? Local resident Tricia Crane would like to put a call out to her fellow book lovers in the community to come together and form a Book Club in Glenmore Park. Tricia’s plans are to hold a monthly gathering of like-minded people who love to read, where members have the opportunity to pick and read a new book each month to discuss, whilst making friends in the process. “I wanted to join a Book Club in Glenmore Park; however, I haven’t been able to find one here. You’ll find them in places like the upper mountains and the inner city. This is when the idea came to me that I should just form one here” said Tricia to the Glenmore Gazette. Book enthusiasts of all genres are welcome to come together to share their favourite stories. “It doesn’t matter what your taste in reading is. I don’t have a favourite genre so to speak. My interests range from biographies to true crime, fictional crime, recent history and even travel books. Lynda La Plante and Patricia Cornwell are a couple of my favourites. When it comes to comedy, I also enjoy Tom Sharpe and Ben Elton who both appeal to my humour. I guess the question is, where to start?” Tricia smiled. “The library has been a favourite place of mine since I was a child. I have passed the love of books down to my daughter and grandsons. We get so busy in our lives and there’s nothing quite like some down time to delve into a book to lose yourself for a short time” she ended. If you are interested in joining the Book Club, you can contact Tricia by email at tricia.richardson6@hotmail.com. r Calling all bookworms! | Image: www.pexels.com

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Why People Who Exercise May Respond Better To Treatment (Part 2 Increased Blood Flow) Last month we saw how lymphatic waste removal benefits your tissues ability to heal. Exercise stimulates efficient removal of biological waste products via the lymphatic vessels, so that cells find themselves in a clean environment, free to respond optimally to therapy, which means healing is usually quicker. Exercise provides additional benefits by increasing delivery of blood to all organs involved in sustaining exercise. For example: 1. To the brain for coordinated movement; 2. to the lungs to oxygenate blood; 3. to the heart to help pump oxygenated blood; 4. to the muscles to sustain movement. Exercise does this by: 1. increasing heart rate and contraction-force which increases blood pressure in order to pump more blood to organs 2. activating reflexes that increase artery & capillary diameter maximising blood delivery efficiency 3. increasing the rate at which nutrient and oxygen rich fluids are filtered from the blood through capillary walls into the tissue space. All this leads to increased delivery of nutrients to tissues during exercise to feed the cells, while simultaneously forcing waste-laden tissue fluids out into lymph vessels & veins, thus

cleaning tissues. More importantly, exercise leads to a tissue response called ‘adaption’, during which muscle & other tissue cells increase their production (inside cells) of: 1. classical antioxidant enzymes such as superoxide dismutase & glutathione peroxidase making cells more resistant to oxidative stress 2. heat shock proteins that help ensure structural & enzyme proteins inside cells remain correctly folded & functional under high-stress conditions meaning cells become harder to damage 3. mitochondria, which power every process inside muscle and other cells. More mitochondria mean better cell function, damage resistance, and post damage repair – in short tissues heal more quickly. Finally exercise training induces considerable blood vessel remodelling, developing new arteries and capillaries for muscle and other tissues which likely lead to improved organ blood flow & long term functional improvements of these tissues. In short, the capacity of various tissues (including muscle) to resists stress and to repair more efficiently is much improved. Again, it’s easy to see why people who exercise more often respond more quickly to therapy.

Last Opportunity to Purchase Land in Family-Friendly Mulgoa Rise Construction is nearing completion on the final stages of land in Western Sydney’s premier residential community, Mulgoa Rise. Over 500 homes have now been built in Mulgoa Rise. With only 60 home sites remaining, this will be one of the last opportunities to secure land within this established family-friendly community. The remaining home sites range in size from 465m² to 750+m² with different frontages available and are priced from $540,000. Mulgoa Rise has been master planned to offer a variety of home sites and dwelling choices to appeal to a diverse range of buyers at different life stages. As well as elevated prestige land, purchasers have a choice of completed designer 4-bedroom town homes and a large selection of house and land packages from some of Sydney’s most awarded builders. Mulpha Executive General Manager, Tim Spencer, said this choice, combined with the genuine village character of the estate, access to community facilities and convenience of nearby town amenities, is proving very attractive to home buyers. “Whether you are a first home buyer or a family looking to upsize or resize to a larger home, this release offers a perfect opportunity to purchase a prepared block ready for building your dream home in an established community” Tim said. Close to the Blue Mountains and mostly bordered by national park, reserves and bushland, Mulgoa Rise has its own sporting fields and parks on the estate, with golf courses, lakes and rivers located nearby. This, together with walkways connecting the estate to Mulgoa Nature Reserve, will appeal to families looking to enjoy a healthy, outdoor lifestyle. With proposed neighbourhood shops and a new state-of-the-art primary school scheduled to open in 2023 adjacent to the estate, Mulgoa Rise is also just minutes away from Glenmore Park shopping centre, and a 10-minute drive to Westfield Penrith Plaza shopping centre with its abundance of restaurants, cafes, shopping and entertainment. The nearest train station, with direct links to the city, is a short 10-minute drive away. There is also a good selection of kindergartens, preschool and childcare centres, as well as public and private schools located nearby. Mulpha has a track record of success in building sustainable communities. Its team of people work together to design and integrate the latest thinking into innovative new residential and lifestyle estates/precincts that combine liveability, walkability, diversity and communities of the future. To find out more, contact Arthur Cox on 1300 272300 or visit www.mulgoarise.com.au. The Mulgoa Rise Sales Office is located at 74 Bradley Street, Glenmore Park and is open seven days a week from 10:00am to 4:00pm. r Mulgoa Rise | Image: Mulpha Developments
