FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Written + Submitted by: Senior Minister Christopher Braga P: 4733 1635 A: Cnr William Howell Dr + Pritchard Pl, Glenmore Park W: www.gpachurch.online Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 + 7pm. Plus activities for adults + young people right throughout the week. I was driving with my seven-year old daughter the other day. I often ask her questions as we drive along. It helps me see how she sees the world and what is going on in her life. I remember being seven myself and thinking a lot about stuff and am sure she does the same. So, I asked her a question. I asked her, “Why do you think God has sent the pandemic?” It’s a pretty tough question. Some might even think that the pandemic undermines the very existence of God. “Surely God wouldn’t send a pandemic!” could be the response. How would you answer the question? Her answer came back in a flash, “So people will turn back to him.” Wow. That wasn’t the answer I was expecting. I sat in the car reflecting on it for while and then said, “I think you are right.” When things are easy we tend to depend on ourselves and forget about God, but when things are hard, when we can’t control things, we turn to God. Jesus came so that we might turn from our rebellion against God and trust him. The pandemic is terrible and we pray regularly that this virus would be taken from our world, but whatever you do, don’t waste the pandemic and use this time as an opportunity to turn to God. FAITH - FOOTHILLS CHURCH

How Should We Respond To The Covid Pandemic? A natural response is to blame someone. The Chinese. Politicians. Illegal border crossers and other irresponsible citizens. God. If we have lost a loved one, wanting answers is understandable. The Bible recognises the world is groaning in pain - it is not the way it should be. It also paints a picture of a God weeping over the world as it weeps and calls us to “Rejoice with those who rejoice, and weep with those who weep.” Conspiracists who say the pandemic does not exist need to think about how to respond to the weeping of the families who have lost loved ones. Is their weeping part of the conspiracy too? Are our hearts too calloused to weep with those who weep? There is a story in the Bible about a severe famine and the response of God’s people is not to conduct a witch-hunt to find out who sinned so there is someone to blame. The famine is not seen as a sign of the end of the world. Their lives were at risk, but they were not afraid. Instead there is an incredibly pragmatic approach to the crisis in this story – they don’t blame God but simply ask: What can we do to help? This shows us something about God and how we should respond to the COVID pandemic. Instead of looking for causes or fearing the worst we are invited to join God in weeping over a hurting world. We are also invited into the hopeful thought that God is always at work to do something about it. Blaming and fear don’t get us anywhere. But when we are compassionate about the needs of others and ask: What can I do to help? We can become part of God’s answer to the pain and challenges of the world at this time. And if we are all doing this our world won’t be so crazy and our souls will find some hope and peace. Go well, Paul

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies has announced $145,000 in NSW Government funding to enable Penrith City Council to build a new kayak launching deck, access paths and parking at Tench Reserve on the Nepean River at Regentville. Tanya Davies said the new kayak launch facility at Tench Reserve was one of 69 successful projects allocated grant funding under the NSW Government’s $28 million investment in Round 3 of the Boating Now program which supports infrastructure projects to improve boating access, amenities and safety for NSW boaters. “The project involves building a new kayak launching deck and accessible car parking spaces, as well as new paths for kayakers connecting the car park to the launch point. This will broaden the appeal and accessibility to the Nepean River” Tanya Davies said. “The program is funded from boating licence and registration fees which are reinvested back into initiatives that improve boating for local communities”. Penrith City Council Mayor Ross Fowler welcomed the funding that will bring more people to the area to enjoy the upgraded facilities. “These upgrades will not only improve access to the river for our community and visitors to Penrith, they will make the area safer for kayakers and pedestrians” Cr Fowler said. “The works will also help us realise Our River Masterplan which we developed with our community to protect, enhance and celebrate the Nepean River”. The Boating Now Round 3 allocation is in addition to the $70 million investment since the program commenced in 2015. Panthers Say Thank You to our Firies After one of the most brutal Summers on record, which saw our firefighters put their lives on the line day in and day out to protect us from bushfires, the Panthers Group recently presented the Regentville Rural Fire Service (RFS) Brigade with a generous donation of $25,000. The Panthers Group invited the Regentville Brigade to attend the Penrith Panthers Firefighter Fundraiser and Open Training Session earlier this year as a thank you for their heroic work. Through donations from the public and corporate sponsors, they raised $50,000 in total, which was split between Regentville and Orchard Hills Rural Fire Service Brigades. “The donation that was received from the Panthers Group was gratefully received by the Brigade. Importantly, it was how our Brigade was received by the public and the Panthers members that we appreciate. The reception was extremely gratifying that we were all met with on the day” said Daniel Jones of Regentville RFS Brigade. The local Brigade are still to decide on what the donation will be used for. However, a new style of lightweight bush firefighting helmet is something that they would like to purchase for every member of their team. Whilst it is currently not bush fire season, the RFS are still responding to incidents and other events on hand. At the request of health authorities, they are trying to keep their contact with the community to a minimum. It is hoped that events such as Open Days and fundraisers will again take place once it is safe to do so. “Regentville RFS Brigade is still training and accepting new members. If anyone is interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter, they can contact us through our Facebook page” ended Daniel.

THINKING OF RENOVATING YOUR BATHROOM? Mulpha Norwest has for the first time released a limited collection of luxury house and land packages in its prestige Mulgoa Rise estate, with three of the blocks located opposite the newly opened Neighbourhood Linear Park, and the others within walking distance. With prices ranging from $1.175m to $1.495m, and land sizes ranging from 600sqm to 686sqm, the six architect-designed homes offer a variety of choices including various options for multi-generational living. The homes are a mix of one, two or three stories, four to five large bedrooms including a master bedroom with ensuite and walk-in robe and each home is equipped with a double garage. Each architect-designed home enjoys flowing open plan living across the multiple living areas, a kitchen with stone benchtops and European appliances as well as an alfresco entertaining area. Every home has fully ducted airconditioning, downlights in all rooms and gas connections. The homes will be built by experienced boutique home builders Bradlee Constructions, whose core focus is on creating architect-designed homes which consider the unique aspects of each block, allowing light-filled, well-designed homes to suit all needs. Close to the Blue Mountains and mostly bordered by national park, reserves and bushland, this well-established estate is already home to over 500 families. Residents will have access to the community facilities at Mulgoa Rise, including two sporting fields, three playgrounds, a picnic area, cycleway, and walkway connecting the estate to Mulgoa Nature Reserve. There are also golf courses, lakes and rivers located nearby. Mulpha Norwest Executive General Manager Tim Spencer said these architect-designed homes will appeal to professional couples and families looking for a spacious luxury home in a prestige family-friendly community with lots of opportunity to enjoy a healthy, outdoor lifestyle. “The flexible floor plans allow for some homes to have a fifth bedroom and ensuite downstairs which will appeal to families who regularly have guests and/or have older relatives living at home with them” Tim said. With proposed neighbourhood shops, a good selection of kindergartens, preschool and childcare centres, public and private schools located nearby and a new state-of-the-art primary school scheduled to open in 2023 adjacent to the estate, Mulgoa Rise is well positioned to support families who decide to make their home there. Glenmore Park Cricket Club have capped off a massive 2019/2020 season, which saw over 300 players from 13 junior teams, 7 senior teams plus their grassroots and girls only programs compete for the successful local club. The Redbacks recently came together for their Junior Presentation, which was held at Panthers Penrith last month. “Due to COVID restrictions imposed by the club, we had to limit the number of attendees to one parent per child. This meant that we could broadcast the presentation live via Facebook to our families at home. There was a great response with huge viewership and positive feedback” said Grant Kean, GPCC Club Secretary. Highlights of the season for the Redbacks included winning the Seniors 1st Grade Premiership (first time in the club’s history), the Under 15’s Silver team crowned premiers as well as 3 junior teams and 3 senior teams Grand Finalists. “Our club raised significant funds for the building of the new cricket nets at Ched Towns Oval. We implemented the first ever Saturday morning all girls team into the mixed competition and maintained strong participation numbers across our grassroots, juniors, and seniors’ ranks” continued Grant. Every junior player at the club received a free newly designed colour playing shirt and training shirt, whilst the seniors players received free playing shirts and club polo shirts. This was thanks to the great support of their sponsors. “With the upcoming season, we are looking forward to our continued commitment to providing a fun, friendly, safe environment for our children to experience and build a love of cricket. We will help develop the skills of all cricketers via our highly skilled, passionate, and committed volunteer coaches and engage our members via the RedbackTV program and social media platforms” Grant explained. The club are currently taking registrations for the 2020/2021 season. You can register online at www.playcricket.com.au and search for Glenmore Park Cricket Club. Igniting the Spark: Yvonne’s Story

A secondment to St Therese’s Community Parish School in Wilcannia, not far from the banks of the Darling River, was where it all started for Yvonne Terweeme. Completely immersing herself, Yvonne lived and worked within the Paarkandji Indigenous community where the isolated school was located. When she returned to Bethany Catholic Primary School in Glenmore Park, she felt compelled to further incorporate Indigenous culture into her curriculum. “After being so welcomed and involved at Wilcannia, being a teacher, you just want to help in any way you can. Although Indigenous learning is part of the curriculum already, I felt it needed to be embraced more” she said. Discovering the perfect leadership program to equip her with the skills she needed to create change, Yvonne saw that the NGS Super Scholarship Awards were opening and thought the opportunity was too good to pass up. “I think there’s a really strong need for more Indigenous culture in schools. We already have Jarrara, an Indigenous support unit who work closely with Catholic schools in our state to share culture. I really wanted to extend upon their offering, and I also wanted to be part of a broader network advocating for more Indigenous culture in curriculum”. After winning an NGS Super Scholarship Award, Yvonne used her funds to undertake the Stronger Smarter Leadership Program. “I learnt how to navigate challenging conversations with staff and students and it really brought together all the elements of what good leaders do – but most importantly, it focused on how to engage the school community to have high expectations relationships”. “If we have high expectations of all students, regardless of their background, that’s how we achieve amazing things. It’s all about working to achieve quality relationships with staff, parents and children and how we can all work together to get the best out of everybody”. Yvonne gained skills to support the success of all children, especially by embracing and developing a positive sense of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander identity and leadership in schools — and she’s already seeing the impact at her own school. “Utilising skills I learnt through the program, I’ve been able to implement Indigenous language and culture back into our school. Teaching our Grade 1 children how to do acknowledgment to country is one example of how to integrate Indigenous culture into the curriculum, not just in a tokenistic way. Educating other staff members was also critical”. r

Is it Time for a Family Review?

Fathers Day First Sunday in September

5pm every Sunday 48 Luttrell St, Glenmore Park  hello@penrithcitychapel.org.au facebook.com/penrithcitychapel

It is a good idea every now and again to take a look at your family and review what has been, and where you would like to focus in the future. This helps you to figure out what is truly important in the life of your family, so you can do more of it. The following questions may help you to do that. Gather around and have a discussion - share your thoughts, feelings, and ideas. AS A FAMILY… • We would like to visit… • We have fun when we… • Our weaknesses are… • Our favourite family memories are… • We show appreciation for each other by… • We like the same movies, books, and music… • Places in the community we like to go to… • We are good at… • What we argue about the most… • What I tell others about my family… • The unique things we have in common… • Three goals for our future as a family… As part of any review, you have to be prepared for some hard truths. Be prepared to listen and acknowledge. It’s not about blame, it’s just about figuring out what you are doing well and what you can do better as a family. r

Tara’s Ready for Business

At just 13 years of age, Glenmore Park student Tara Pease is proving that it’s never too early to start your own business, having created Delicious Doggy Delights. The budding kidpreneur makes and sells her own healthy dog treats and she already has some local fans, including our four-legged friends. “I started Delicious Doggy Delights about one month ago because I wanted to help make dogs healthy by giving them

a special treat to eat. I was just selling to family and friends to start with and before long, people started telling other people and we had some very happy dogs. It has now really taken off” said Tara to the Glenmore Gazette. Tara makes her own range of products at home, which include three treat and two jerky flavours. “I currently have three different treat flavours which are Peanut Butter Nibbles, Cheesy Delight and Pea-nana and they are $5 a bag. I also have two flavours of jerky which are beef and beef/liver and it is $10 a bag. Some weeks I have specials, which are different flavours and they sell quickly. The most popular product so far is the Peanut Butter Nibbles” she explained. Jessica Pease, Tara’s Mother, could not be any prouder of her daughter starting a business at such a young age, “I’m extremely impressed that she is so motivated to produce the products and sell them. Tara has a love of animals and has always been a creative young girl. This is a very fitting project for her in combining both traits. It’s also teaching her about money and giving her a healthy respect for earning and spending”. So, what advice does Tara have for other teenagers that are thinking of starting their own businesses? “Just go for it, no matter what anyone says. It never hurts to try new things” she smiled. For more information or to purchase Tara’s products, search ‘Delicious Doggy Delights’ on Facebook and Instagram. “Oh, Mum said she will deliver inside Glenmore Park for free to help me out too” Tara added. r Feature Article: [Cover] Tara with her dog Millie [Above] Tara’s amazing dog treats | Image: Jessica Pease

Happy Fathers Day

Happy Fathers Day Enjoy the day spoiling your Dad or being with your Dad or thinking of your Dad. You will have to think of something creative to do to celebrate Fathers Day due to the Coronavirus crisis!

Contactless Consultations Due To Coronavirus

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, we are still performing contactless consults, with the nurse bringing the pet into the hospital and the client waiting in the car. The veterinarians are calling the client to discuss any health issues and to discuss the treatment plans. The government restrictions are easing, however, as we work so closely together inside the hospital, we cannot be more than 1.5m apart from each other and if one of our staff becomes sick, then we will all become sick and we will have to close the business for 2 weeks or more. We have come so far, and we would hate to go backwards. We cannot wait for the Coronavirus crisis to be over, but it is looking like we have to create a new normal. For more information check out our Facebook, website www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or call 02 4736 2027.

Glenmore Park’s Fishers Given 1,000 Reasons To Wet A Line Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies was on hand last month to witness 1,000 Australian Bass fingerlings take to their new home in Glenmore Loch, as part of the NSW Government’s annual Freshwater Fish Stocking Plan. Tanya Davies said this top-up was great news for keen fishers eager to cast a line in the region. “The Australian Bass is an iconic fish species and it gives me great pleasure to see its numbers boosted in the Mulgoa area,” Mrs Davies said. “These fingerlings come from the NSW Government’s hatcheries as part of our commitment to ensure that our waterways are full of healthy fish. “Initiatives such as the Freshwater Fish Stocking Plan are important for the recreational fishing community because of the critical role they play in conservation, tourism and added economic benefits.”

Tanya Davies said the 1,000 fingerlings stocked into Glenmore Loch are part of more than 50,000 which will be released into waterways across NSW. “The NSW Department of Primary Industries (DPI) does an excellent job in making sure our State’s recreational fishers have the chance to do what they love by breeding and releasing such mammoth numbers of fish stocks,” Mrs Davies said. “DPI has chosen Glenmore Loch because the expert team has deemed it to be among the best waterways in NSW to see these fingerlings flourish.” Anglers interested in seeing stocking numbers can access an interactive map on the DPI website https://www.dpi.nsw.gov.au/fishing/recreational/resources/ stocking.

Is Zinc Good or Bad for my Joint Cartilage? The following appeared in a leading daily newspaper: ‘Korean study reveals zinc rich foods could be the cause for osteoarthritis’ Two different studies state the opposite: 1. Zinc protects articular chondrocytes (cartilage cells) through changes in Nrf2-mediated antioxidants, cytokines and matrix metalloproteinases (Huang 2017) 2. Zinc protects chondrocytes (cartilage cells) from monosodium iodoacetate-induced damage by enhancing ATP and mitophagy (Huang 2020) So, is zinc or zinc rich food good or bad for cartilage? Short answer – sufficient zinc is vital for cartilage. While the entire newspaper article implicates zinc as a possible cause of osteoarthritis, the comments section of the same article states that the author of the scientific paper in question said ‘No evidence available to date clearly indicated that zinc plays a causal role in osteoarthritis’. This article for one reason or another is why doctors say – never trust Dr Google! Zinc is used in > 3000 human-proteins ~10% of all body proteins; is vital for cell communication. Mitochondria produce energy that allows chondrocytes to maintain strong cartilage. The second study above details how scientists can, in a few days, induce osteoarthritis by injecting ‘monosodium-iodoacetate’ into animal joints. Monosodiumiodoacetate negatively affects 14 separate mitochondrial processes, precipitously lowering energy production, causing chondrocyte damage and death. Chondrocyte death results in

inflammation, then cartilage quickly thins, and animals get pain and all other hallmarks of osteoarthritis. In both animals and humans, the likely root cause of osteoarthritis is poor energy production by mitochondria of joint cells. Zinc supplementation of animals stops all 14 negative effects of Monosodium-iodoacetate, maintains mitochondrial function, and ‘almost completely reverse(s) the effects of monosodiumiodoacetate, suggesting (zinc’s) potential protective role against osteoarthritis progression. Great mitochondrial function requires getting great nutrition, plus the appropriate hormonal signals from things such as cartilage specific exercise, appropriate sleep and even sunshine. Good cartilage needs the same things. Bad diet, inappropriate/ too little exercise, poor sleep and not enough sun, are stressors that can lead to poor mitochondrial function, poor cartilage cell health and osteoarthritis. Zinc is an important nutrient, sufficient intake of which will help prevent osteoarthritis, but it’s just ‘one of many’ things that together as a team will support excellent joint health.

THE LAST WORD

Emergency Services

Last month in this very column, I asked ‘August’ to be kind. In turn, it was a very sombre month. If you’re anything like me, I watched the news daily to keep abreast of the COVID-19 developments in both NSW and across other states. The message of mask wearing was and remains to be a consistent message. If not for your protection, definitely for those around you. The tightening of restrictions around school end of year gatherings and celebrations has been introduced, along with a series of limitations relating to specific activities (singing, choirs, windinstruments). 2020 has been a journey like no other. Like many other small businesses, The District Gazette is locally owned. Our family and staff live (and love) local, we shop where you do, our kids attend the schools that your children do (or did), we dine at local restaurants and use local trades/ services also owned by fellow members of the community. Like many businesses, we are grateful for the support of both our longstanding advertisers (and the new ones!) along with our loyal readers (just like you)! When reaching out to our advertisers be sure to tell them where you found them! It gives them (and us!) a real kick. Now give yourself permission to sneak away and immerse yourself in all the latest local happenings. Enjoy Your Community News. Remember, ‘Help people. Even when you know they can’t help you back’.
