Sapphires ‘Most Liked Café’ in NSW! Amazing things can happen, when you are surrounded by a huge following and a supportive community. Cafe owners Jenna Vicary and Tarryn Ireland were both shocked, yet delighted when they were recently named ‘Most Liked Café’ in NSW by Allianz Australia Insurance Limited. Jenna says “One of our fantastic customers nominated us, we didn’t know anything about the competition at the time. We then received a phone call telling us we were a finalist.. it was so exciting!” Sapphire’s Cafe is the ideal location for families to enjoy a Sunday brunch as the beautiful spring weather approaches. With the adjoining park and outdoor seating, you can soak up the sun and enjoy a great meal while keeping the kids entertained. “We encouraged all our customers, local friends and family to vote for us and then we continued doing what we do best; offering great food, great coffee and great service. I was speechless when we received the phonecall to say that we were the WINNERS. I couldn’t believe my ears!” Sapphires are planning to invest their winnings in having the café windows tinted in time for the warmer weather, additional childfriendly furniture and take their phenomenal winning team out for a fun-filled dinner and bowling!

Sapphires owners Tarryn & Jenna

“Thank you to all our wonderful and supportive friends, family and customers – we truly appreciate your ongoing custom and support” says Jenna. Allianz were awarding the most liked Café’, Local Tradie, hair/Beauty Salon and Gardening small business in each state, to win a massive $5,000 in August. Congratulations Sapphire’s!!

Well, the weather certainly has been kind to us, as we enjoyed a slight sneak peek of what spring has to offer, in late August. With the warmer weather upon us, it’s time to think about pottering around in the garden and cleaning the pool. If you have a green thumb, (or don’t)… check out our spring feature on page 12 it’s bound to send you into the garden, getting your hands dirty, soaking up the sun and enjoying this fantastic weather. September has arrived, and we’ve already received invitations to six parties. If you’re anything like us, the parties commence when the warm weather does! Both our boys enjoy their birthdays this month, and we have so many other functions to attend. We have a spectacular edition of all things PARTY that are sure to give you some great ideas when planning your next one! Narelle gives us some wise pointers on children’s expectations on page 17, while this month’s ‘What’s Cooking’ will get you right into the party spirit. Remember to keep your body in check during party season, refer to the ‘Tune Up Tips’ supplied by our resident Naturopath Michelle Beech on page 14. For now, enjoy this spectacular edition of the Gazette and keep in mind “If you can dream it, you can make it so!”

Fit For Spring! Local residents will now be able to get active and fit with the new outdoor fitness zones and trails that have been installed in Glenmore Park. The official launch took place on Monday 6th August. Penrith Mayor Greg Davies said outdoor recreation and fitness is gaining in popularity and Council has met this need with equipment for people to use. “The equipment enables workouts to help you improve flexibility, endurance and strength. There are stretch stations for body twists and aerobics, exercise bikes, a hand bike, senior and mini cross trainers, senior and junior recumbent bikes, elliptical trainer, chest press and pulldowns, pull ups, leg raises and body dip and push ups, leg press and sit ups. “A fit and healthy lifestyle has many individual and community benefits, including a higher chance of a longer life, often higher self-esteem and less cost to the community with less medical and hospital use.” All equipment is clearly posted with easy-to-read ‘how to use’ signage as well as technological links to fitness websites and apps for further information. As we have experienced a small taste of the warmer weather, many residents have enjoyed testing out the new equipment. “Council will build an activity zone at the Glenmore Park Child and Family Precinct,” Councillor Davies said. Funding for the equipment has come from Glenmore Park’s stage one developer levies. ”There will be a range of equipment for adults and children of all levels of fitness and ability. It’s ideal, whether you want to start a healthy and active lifestyle, maintain and improve your existing fitness or are seeking an alternative to exercising indoors.

“Fit for all” - Mayor Greg Davies, Tanya Davies MP and David Bradbury MP

“The equipment for both sites complements each other and provide for a mix of training to help ensure users can meet their particular exercise needs. “This new personal fitness equipment is a new addition to the City that will help us to be a healthy and fit community.”

HOLIDAYS AT GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Cnr William Howell Dr & Pritchard Pl Ph 4733 1635 www.glenmorepark.anglican.asn.au

Service Times: Sundays @ 8.30 and 10.15am, 5 and 7pm. Plus activities for adults and young people right throughout the week

Junior Jivers Junior Jivers is a fantastic music and activity playgroup that we run at Glenmore Park Anglican Church and is an integral part of what happens in the Glenmore Park community. Whenever I drop in to say hi during the group, the kids are always having such fun – and the mums too! Even some Dads and grandparents come as well! I’m continually amazed at the energy and enthusiasm of the kids and leaders. It’s very infectious! The format of Junior Jivers is designed to encourage each child in their physical, mental, social and spiritual development. Each week there’s a structured program based on a Christian theme (such as “God made the animals”) that includes singing, dancing, musical instruments, a story and a craft or activity related to the theme. Mums and Carers are involved in the activities with their children so they have a great time together. The songs also include many of the children’s favourites from “The Wiggles”, “Playschool” and Nursery Rhymes. There’s also morning tea during the program which is a great time for children and mums to catch up with each another. Each term there are also outings, dress up days and visits. The Leaders do a fantastic job with all their planning! I often hear mums say how Junior Jivers is the highlight of their week and the time where they feel supported by other mums. We have two groups of Junior Jivers through the week – Tuesdays and Fridays 10am to 11.30am, so if you would like to come, you’re more than welcome.

Jesus often taught the people around Him how important children are and that we should care for them. In the Bible’s New Testament book of ‘Mark’, Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not hinder them, for the kingdom of God belongs to such as these.” Children are treasured and loved by God. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, we very much value little children and the important role of parenting and so we work hard to care for them and support them. All our leaders at Junior Jivers and all our other children’s and youth groups are committed members of our Church and regularly involved in Child Protection and Safe Ministry Training. We’d love to see you at Junior Jivers or any of our other groups and our Sunday Church Services – 8.30am, 10.15am, 5pm (all with wonderful Creche and children’s programs) and 7pm (especially for youth).

My wife and I were on our way to a Bible study last night of all things and by the time we got to the door (a three minute drive), I had managed to say such unhelpful words that she decided to go home. I was such a jerk to the woman I love the most! To make things worse, the following passage was the reading for the night, which I was leading, so you can imagine I wasn’t feeling very spiritual at all. James 3:9-11 9 With the tongue we praise our Lord and Father, and with it we curse men, who have been made in God’s likeness. 10 Out of the same mouth come praise and cursing. My brothers, this should not be. 11 Can both fresh water and salt water flow from the same spring? Relationships can be hard to negotiate at times, even with those we love. Our words are often the catalyst for whether we build people up, or bring them down. They powerfully impact all of our relationships, especially our marriages. The point James is making is common sense really, that if you follow God (God

Fr Robert Riedling • 34-38 William Howell Dr , Glenmore Park • Phone: 4737 9735

Well, the regular Olympics are over and we are preparing to enjoy the spectacle of the Paralympics as a fitting sequel to a highly entertaining and successful Olympic Games in London. Reproduced below is a little piece I wrote for the Padre Pio Parish Bulletin just prior to the commencement of the recent Olympic Games. It is equally relevant at this time as we prepare for the Paralympic Games, a “parallel” to the regular Games. You can’t escape the Olympics hype can you? Even before the Opening Ceremony just a couple of days ago, there has been intense media coverage of the preparations in London, some of it positive as well as the inevitable focus on the negative aspects of preparation with regards to security, traffic movement and so on, familiar to all of us who were present in Sydney just twelve years ago as we hosted the last Olympics of the twentieth century. Positive or negative, we are steeling ourselves for an increasing bombardment of Olympics coverage with the predictable clichés as well as the occasional inspiring story of triumph over adversity and, we hope, good sportsmanship. As I write this I am seated in front of the television watching one of my favourite films, “Chariots of Fire.” Those of you familiar with it will know that it is the story

(based on actual events) of two young men preparing to compete in the track and field events at the 1924 Olympics in Paris; one, Harold Abrahams, a Jewish student at Cambridge driven to succeed and prove himself in the face of prejudice, the other, Eric Liddell, a Scottish lay missionary who refuses to compete in an event scheduled for a Sunday even though he knows he is all but guaranteed a first place in this event. If you are not familiar with it, do yourself a favour and watch “Chariots of Fire” – you won’t be disappointed! If you are familiar with it, why not acquaint yourself with it once more at this opportune time? Though the film might be seen by some as sentimental, it does highlight something that seems to be less common in sports these days than in the past – good sportsmanship. I’ll leave you to see for yourself how this is played out in the film. Though the word “sportsmanship” never appears in the scriptures, it is certainly something that would have had the endorsement of Jesus. Sportsmanship is essentially about charity, focusing on the other rather than on self. Let’s hope and pray that as we enjoy the coverage of the Olympics over the next couple of weeks that we will witness many examples of good sportsmanship and say a little prayer of thanks to God when we do. Blessings, Fr Robert Riedling – Parish Priest

Re-Birth of a Local Legend After nine months closure and extensive renovations, Glenmore Garden Plus (formally Glenmore Nursery) has reopened just in time for Spring. The reopening brought lots of celebrations to the nursery, including some great presentations by gardening experts. The garden centre has been on site for over 39 years and has been completely rebuilt from the ground up. It now features not only garden and lifestyle products, but also everything you need from landscape supplies through to a coffee shop. “It has been a lot of hard work, but I am sure everyone will notice the difference the moment they walk in the door” owner Tony Saaib said. “We cannot wait to also help the customers ‘get the look ‘ at their place”, he also said. “We hope to become the ‘horticultural hub’ for the Penrith region and welcome any gardening society or club to enquire about using our venue to meet” said Tony. Opening on 29th September to 7th October the Festival provides a feast for all garden lovers. There is an exciting mix of gardens on the programme this year. Nine of the eleven gardens on show are privately owned and only open to visitors during the Festival giving visitors an opportunity to explore some of the finest gardens in the Blue Mountains and also chat to some of the owners who are always ready to give you advice on cool climate gardening. “Under the Marquee at the Fairmont” is a “new innovative” feature this year and will comprise a series of horticultural talks and demonstrations to be held over two days of the Festival on 3rd and 4th October. A series of presentations will be made by notable Australian gardening experts talking on a range of subjects. Judy Horton noted Australian gardening author and regular on ABC and Radio 2UE will give a talk on Australian Gardens Past and Future. This will be followed by a discussion on the most common gardening problems with audience participation invited. “It’s A Small World” will be presented by Clinton Nesci demonstrating the art of Bonsai. Bill Grattan will explore the unique history of the camellia and also answer common gardening questions. Rose experts, Glynis and Doug Hayne will take the mystique out of growing roses. Festival organisers have also arranged a special “golfing” package for visitors who may wish to sample the picturesque and challenging golf courses in the upper mountains. A 30% discount off the normal green fees will be applied at the Wentworth Falls, Leura and Katoomba courses for Festival visitors. The Leura Village Fair will transform the village of Leura into an open air market on the last two days of the Festival. Ray Wiles, President of the Leura Gardens Festival says, “Each year we raise over $100,000 for our local hospital and other medical foundations in the Blue Mountains and it’s thanks to our garden owners and festival goers that we are able to continue staging this event now in its 49th year.” Leura Gardens Festival 29th September to 7th October. 9.30am to 4.30pm daily. Tickets $20 for all gardens or $5 per single entry.

KJ Rocks the Holidays School students looking for something new to do these holidays will be excited to learn about the brand new KJ’s Performing Arts Day Camp, run by staff from local music school, Kalinda Jade Studios. Students aged five to 18 can participate in the camp which will run on each Wednesday of the next school holidays. Each day runs from 9.30am-3.30pm with music, dance and drama activities designed to keep kids of all ages, abilities and experience entertained. The camp is based at the South Penrith Neighbourhood Centre. Primary school aged students (aged five to 12) will participate in workshops on drumming, singing, dancing and music including games and performing. Older students (aged 13 and up) will participate in the school holiday KJ Rock program in which they’ll form bands and learn how to play music as a group. According to owner and teacher, Kalinda McDonald, it doesn’t matter how much experience students have with the performing arts. “We welcome students with absolutely no experience in music, dancing or drama as well as those with years of tuition under their belts,” Kalinda said. “It’s all about having fun and getting into the spirit of performing. “It’s a totally non-competitive environment so students can let loose, express themselves, meet new friends and learn new skills.” Parents will find the camp to be an affordable and enjoyable alternative to vacation care, with discounts available for families registering more than one child. Places are limited so early registration is encouraged. Contact Kalinda Jade Studios on 040 134 336, email kalindajade@yahoo. com or find Kalinda Jade Studios on Facebook.

Spring is here and with it lots of outdoor activities, including cricket, swimming, bushwalking, barbeques and the beginning of the party season! But beware! Partying can be bad for your liver. As the Chinese say, the liver is the General of the body – it directs so many of our processes, and sad to say, Western society, diet, alcohol, lifestyle and stress, really wreak havoc on our poor old livers. If our liver is sluggish, compromised, congested, then our bodies will have difficulty with the 3D’s: Digestion, Defaecation, Detoxification. In Traditional Chinese Medicine the liver is considered the seat of emotional stress and anger – an unhappy liver makes our muscles very tight, our eyes red, dry and gritty with with dull sclera (whites of our eyes), it also causes us to have weak nails and interupts our ability to have compassion and feel emotions. So, what can be done to improve the health of our liver? 1. Cut down on alcohol Alcohol is a toxic substance that the liver is forced to metabolise. 2. Have liver herbs and nutrients Many herbs protect liver function by stimulating bile flow and help the organ to regenerate itself. Popular herbs for liver support include Milk Thistle, Dandelion root, Licorice and Gentian. 3. Have a Caffeine Break The liver processes caffeine like it does any other toxin. Caffeine forces the liver to release glycogen stores into the blood, and slows the organs ability to detox harmful toxins. 4. Think Green Natural green foods support the liver by reducing acidity and assisting toxin elimination, strengthening the immune system and reducing excess fat and fluid stores. Green foods include sea vegetables, barley grass, green vegetables, green salads, chlorophyll, and spirulina. 5. Get Some Z’s When you close your eyes to go to sleep at night, your brain releases a chemical called Melatonin that helps to regulate your sleep cycle. Continued pg 15...

...From pg 14 Melatonin shares the body’s toxic load with the liver by

helping to neutralise free radicals and regenerating the body overall. 6. Avoid Medications When Possible Like other toxins, residues of drugs and medications can build up in the liver and cause toxicity. 7. Go Organic Try to buy organic fruit, vegetables and meat when possible. Nonorganic products often contain toxic poisons, pesticides, hormones and antibiotics which may all build up and inhibit liver function. 9. Water !Water! Water! Drink at least two litres of filtered water per day to assist the liver (and kidneys) with toxin elimination. Small and frequent sips are best, however, don’t drink a lot of water (especially cold water) with meals as it may dilute the gastric juices in the stomach, inhibiting digestionand increasing the liver’s workload. There’s no time like the present to start getting healthy and staying healthy – even throughout party season. You can make an appointment to see Michelle by phoning 4739 9947 or 0414 944 112.

PARENT’S CORNER Permission to Nurture Your Child Humans are social and emotional beings. After the need for food, warmth, and physical safety is met, humans most need to belong. Your child actually needs you. Probably more than you realise. Expectations of children is one of the biggest areas of discussion, or should I say contention, in the parenting groups that I facilitate. Some parents don’t understand a child’s need for belonging and connection. And it seems to be the greatest source of conflict between parents and young children. Our society places such an emphasis on independence that young children are given a timeline for developmental tasks. We are so achievement orientated and intellectual, we lose sight of the ball because we’re focused on the goal posts. Parents worry about the precedent it sets if they feed their three year old, or help their six year old get dressed for school on those days when she just can’t manage it herself, or the nineyear old that snuggles into bed with the parents in the middle of the night after a nightmare. I ask “do you think you’ll still be feeding him when he’s ten years old?” Unfortunately, what I see is a whole lot of parents with high or unrealistic expectations for their children and scorn and indignation when the kids, little tiny kids, aren’t meeting the mark. Underlying all of this angst appears to be the view that children are intrinsically lazy, manipulative, and out to make your life hell. Dr Bryan Post calls it fear based parenting. If I don’t have my child toilet trained by the age of two, how will it reflect on me? What’s wrong with my child? Sometimes I still need to feed my six year old his breakfast, or help him get dressed. Some days it is all too much for him. It’s not that he can’t do it himself, he just needs some extra love and support. If he can’t get that love and support from his parent, where else is he going to get it? When parents come to realise this, they find that their child does not need to tantrum or misbehave to get the parents’ attention. Many parents tell me that where before they would have told their child to “do it yourself/go away/hang on/stop pestering me”, if they stop and meet the child’s need when it arises it avoids the power struggles and conflict and tantrums. Some parents say that when their walls of strict adherence to independence are broken down, it is such a relief for them to be able to tend to their young child’s need for love and care and nurture and belonging. They learn to approach parenting from a heart level rather than a head level. Parents often say, “thank you for giving me permission to nurture my child”. Having realistic expectations for our young ones is a big part of understanding and responding to them, and enjoying them. Grow them up with love, care, kindness, nurture and support.

PET CHAT Wonder Dogs at Orchard Hills Wow, what a fantastic response we had to our Open Day on Saturday 18th August 2012. Thank you so much for everyone who attended on the day and braved the windy weather. Dr Katrina Warren, Kelly Gill and the 4 Wonderdogs were fabulous. How nice was it to see the Wonderdogs keen to show off their tricks for us! Did you see Flynn weave through the peoples legs? Did you see Willow take a bow? How about Jordie pushing the young pup Trick around in the toy car? Did you see Jinx add up 2 numbers and bark the answer? Dr Katrina Warren is warm hearted and a genuinely nice person. She gave so much advice on training dogs and talked about her life experiences. We had a special VIP meeting with our top 40 clients in our waiting room with Dr Katrina Warren and the Wonderdogs, where they had a private trick show. The hospital tours were very popular. Jordi showed many people through the hospital and explained all of the different pieces of equipment that we have. We know what we do in our hospital and a hospital tour is a great way for you to see what goes on behind our doors. Dr Katrina Warren judged the competitions and the winners received a large bag full of goodies kindly donated by Pets Charming, Fluffy and Knuckles, Merial, Hills, Bayer, Pfizer, Dermcare, and Value Plus. The winners of the dog competitions and the lucky door prize are listed below: • Lucky door prize won by Bella • Most like their owner – 1st place ... ‘Jed’– Husky, tuxedo • Best trick – 1st place ... ‘Kobi’ german shorthaired pointer • Best dressed – 1t place ... Ethan Tumbles to GOLD! Glenmore Park’s Ethan McGuinness recently secured a gold medal in the National Clubs Trampolining Competition in Brisbane in Queensland. Ethan, who is 11 years old, competed in the Sub Junior Competition and secured a position in the Australian team. He will represent the green and gold at the 2012 Indo Pacific Championships, which will be held in Sydney later in the year. Ethan was the only male in Australia in his age group that had the skills required to qualify for this competition. To win the gold, Ethan competed in Level 5 and was up against 14 boys, ranging from 11 years to 17 years old. After his first two passes, he went into the final in the lead. He produced a pass that included a double backsault. Ethan’s score from the three passes were higher than any other tumbling athlete during the weekend competition. Ethan trains 5 days a week at Kachan School of Tumbling and Performance in Windsor. Congratulations to Ethan on the gold medal and good luck at the 2012 Indo Pacific Championships!

Football Champions of the Future Glenmore Park Football Club had two U6 teams competing in a recent Nepean District gala day (4th Aug) at Cook Park, St Mary’s – the U6 Wolves and the U6 Bears. The Wolves had convincing wins in all 3 games played on the day and made it through to the semifinals. They won the first game 8-1, second game 9-0 and the final game 7-1. Watch this space to see if the Wolves won the semis! It was a huge day for all the boys and girls who took part in the day and they all had so much fun that it didn’t matter whether they won or lost. That’s team spirit!
