Marcus’ Quest to Save the Koalas
Local koala expert and author Marcus Zorich has just released ‘Intergalactic Space Farting Koalas’, a children’s book with the proceeds all going towards planting more koala food trees. The story is about two koala groups, one in the wild and one in captivity. They meet, interact, and are forced to learn from each other; while in the background, there’s mythical tales and folk stories of a third type of koala. There’s also plenty of twists and turns along the way. “Writing ‘Intergalactic Space Farting Koalas’ was a 10-year project to educate Australians about the work behind the scenes of koala care and the amount of effort and planning that goes into supporting and feeding captive koalas in large numbers. It also highlights the problems of both wild and captive koalas. The book channels you to see it through the lens of koalas, with the ongoing development of human infrastructure, faced with even more extreme climate events such as bushfires, caused by damage to the environment, including loss of habitat due to urban expansion. I’ve created a story around these issues” said Marcus to the Glenmore Gazette. The book is also about resilience. Struggling with his schooling growing up, this didn’t stop Marcus believing in himself. It was written in a way for students who are struggling with their own identity, and schooling to find their place in the world. As well as being an author, Marcus is also the Managing Director of Koala Retreat. Koala Retreat assists in the conservation of koalas and their habitat. He has plans to write two further books, forming a trilogy. All three books will be the pillars of a greater story, where in between each book will allow for many short stories. ‘Intergalactic Space Farting Koalas’ is available to purchase locally from Glenmore Park Post Office, Caffe Cherry Beans and Mags News at HomeCo Glenmore Park Town Centre. “I feel truly honoured and blessed that these small businesses are on board in my vision for a different alternative to koala conservation” smiled Marcus. “One book sold puts one koala food tree in the ground!” You can learn more at www.spacekoalas.com and www.koalaretreat.com, or email Marcus at marcus@koalaretreat.com. v Marcus’ book is available at Glenmore Park Post Office | Image: Marcus Zorich

Items such as damaged or broken household furniture, whitegoods, mattresses, and bundled garden vegetation can be included in a bulky waste collection.
Make sure your collection is no more than two cubic metres in size. Place your collection neatly with like-items grouped together at the kerbside the night before your scheduled collection.

Vision to Life Property development firm Beaini have announced the recent acquisition of Glenmore Village, adding to their growing property portfolio. “Located in the heart of Glenmore Ridge and Mulgoa Rise, Glenmore Village will boast 145 luxury apartments over approximately 8000m² of retail and commercial floor space and is envisioned to be the one-stop destination for dining, services, and shopping needs. “The facilities will be complimented by convenient ongrade and undercover car parking. Glenmore Village will be anchored by Woolworths Metro and include a dining and medical precinct, childcare centre, gymnasium, and a variety of specialty retailers providing a modern convenience with a community feel” said Mickey Beaini, Director of Beaini Projects. The Woolworths Metro Glenmore Store is expected to open late 2023. The 1,345sqm square metre store will anchor a mixed use residential, commercial, and retail development. “We are delighted to be part of the Glenmore Park development and excited local residents will have access to one of our newest neighbourhood food stores. “We know customers are increasingly looking for convenient and healthy food choices and we will be focusing on creating a store offer that is locally relevant to the Glenmore Park community” said Angus Stapleton, Woolworths Metro Property Manager – Metro NSW. “Whether customers are looking for fresh and convenient food on-the-go options or inspiring meal solutions for dinner that night, our Metro stores are designed to meet those needs. “We can’t wait to welcome customers into our Woolworths Metro Glenmore Park store from 2023” explained Angus. Woolworths Metro stores are smaller format neighbourhood stores tailored to local customers looking for a convenient walk-up offer. While the range at Woolworths Metro Glenmore Store is yet to be confirmed, the neighbourhood stores usually offer a great mix of high quality locally produced fresh food and everyday pantry staples for customers looking for a quick and easy top up shop. r Artist’s impression of Glenmore Village | Image: Mintus | Article: Woolworths

When Everything Old is New The art of upcycling furniture is on the rise. This is when a piece of furniture, whether it’s vintage or just unloved, is given a new lease on life. For local Sue Jeffries, it’s a great pastime and a craft she loves to teach in her workshops. “I’ve always been a crafty person from a young age but got a little more serious about it around 20 years ago. This is when people started to admire my work and wanted me to redecorate pieces for them and that’s when I started teaching classes” explained Sue to the Glenmore Gazette. Sue started a business called Second Time Round a couple of years ago, when she decided to become a chalk paint stockist, as there was nowhere to collect supplies around the area. She now stocks Artisan chalk and mineral paints, brushes, and accessories from her showroom. Sue is also the Australian distributor for Hokus Pokus and their beautiful range of furniture transfers and supplies all shops around Australia that she imports from South Africa. “My workshops on upcycling furniture and wares are held regularly for people who want to learn how to change the look of their own furniture without spending big money to replace them. This enables them to give it a whole new look at a fraction of the price of replacing furniture and saves on landfill. For $120 plus some paint and brushes, it’s a fun filled day held regularly at the beautiful historic property Winbourne at Mulgoa” Sue said. Most of Sue’s students leave amazed at what they can create in just a few hours. “I have all different people from all walks of life pass through my door to learn this craft. This includes Mums who simply want something for themselves. I see people going through grief and they see it as a part of their healing process and helps them deal with what they are going through. People who suffer depression tell me how good it is for them as it takes away what they are generally feeling into a more relaxed world” reflected Sue. “And there are people who simply love to create” she added. Sue will be running Christmas workshops towards the end of the year. For more information, visit the website www. secondtimeround.com.au, search Second Time Round NSW on Facebook or send an email to sue@secondtimeround.com. au.

www.secondtimeround.com.au One for the Green Thumbs With Spring now upon us, it’s the perfect time of year to get out and about in your garden. Whether you’re planting a new flower or maintaining that garden bed, local resident Linda Christie has created the perfect group for green thumbs, ‘Glenmore Park Gardeners’. The Facebook group was formed in July 2021 and already has 180 members. “We recently moved to the area. When we were looking to buy here, we noticed how many well-kept gardens and properties there were. That was a big plus and contributed towards us liking this area. Since moving in and taking my dog for walks, I have been admiring all the amazing gardens. This has led to trying to work out what I could do to our garden to give it a makeover” explained Linda to the Glenmore Gazette. “There was a gardening group on Facebook in the town I was living in, in Central West NSW. It was full of great tips, ideas, and inspirations. I couldn’t find one here, so I started one” she continued. The group shares ideas, tips and learnings about all things gardening. They welcome sharing the success and failures in the garden. Once lockdown restrictions ease, they have plans to get together to visit open gardens and to do some gardening projects in the area. “What I enjoy most about gardening is that it’s quite calming but can be good exercise at the same time. Anyone can do it and you don’t have to have lots of money or space. The best part is seeing what you can achieve” Linda smiled. “Roses are definitely my favourite. They must have perfume though!” she ended. If you would like to join the group, search ‘Glenmore Park Gardeners’ on Facebook.
Orlando’s Hair Raising Challenge
Glenmore Park student Orlando Rowan has been growing his hair for the past 18 months and it’s all for a good cause. The 11-year-old has been raising funds for Wigs 4 Kids, which will see him cutting his hair off to donate to a wig maker, making wigs for kids with cancer. With a goal to raise $1,000, the inspirational boy has already raised $1,487 and has now set his sights on reaching between $1,750 and $2,000 for Kids with Cancer Foundation. “I will be going to St Dominics College next year and I won’t be able to keep my hair because they have a grooming policy. I thought that there was no point in wasting my hair and that I should give it to someone who doesn’t grow hair at the same rate as me. I did some research and found that this was the charity who promised not to sell the hair overseas and that all the funds raised went to the sick kids,” said Orlando. “I have now inspired my grandad (Steve Weir) and my dad (Nathan Rowan) to also promote the fundraiser, and to grow their own hair to cut off at the end of the year” he added. This amazing feat is the first fundraiser that Orlando has ever participated in. “I have never done a fundraiser like this before. I just thought it was a good opportunity to make a difference in the life of some sick kids who might be getting bullied because they don’t have any hair. They have a pretty tough life as it is being a kid with cancer” Orlando stated. If you would like to get behind Orlando and support him with this amazing cause, you can visit his fundraising page at https:// fundraise.kidswithcancer.org.au/fundraisers/orlandorowan. r Orlando and Grandad Steve have both been growing their hair | Image Supplied

Keeping Children Safe Online: What Are They Seeing?
L BUSINE CA
SS
LO
How do we prepare children to cross the road? We speak to them about the risks, we practise looking right and left, and we show them how to identify zebra crossings. In the beginning, we hold their hands and walk with them. Now consider, have you given as much thought to preparing your child to cross what is dubbed “the information superhighway” – the internet? In a time when social distancing is key to addressing the evolving public health issue of Covid-19, the internet allows children to learn, connect and create. However, going online is not risk-free. Over the next three articles, we explore three questions every parent must ask when their child uses the internet: 1. What are they seeing? 2. What are they doing? 3. Who are they talking to? According to eSafety research, most young people have viewed inappropriate content before the age of 17. Nearly half of children aged 9 to 16 regularly view sexual images. These images are most often viewed on either content-sharing apps such as Snapchat or Discord, or on live-streaming platforms such as TikTok or Periscope. How do you know what your child is seeing? Your first thought might be to maximise parental controls (and this is important), but the first step to online safety does not require technology. It is the simple, powerful but often under-estimated tool of parenting: Talking to your child. According to research from our national Centre to Counter Child Exploitation, only half of Australian parents regularly talk to their children about online safety. It is vital to create the space for your children to speak to you honestly about any concerns they have about their internet use. Here are some ways you can do this: • Be curious and supportive, learn about their favourite games or apps; • Talk to them about the risks of going online; • Problem-solve together what they might do if they see something scary or yucky online; • Avoid using the removal of devices as a behavioural consequence. For more information, visit the eSafety Commissioner’s website on https://www.esafety.gov.au/parents.

A Little Piece of Hope Whilst we all grapple with life in lockdown, a local resident has brought a little piece of hope to the community. The Free Little Lockdown Library in Regentville was created recently and has been welcomed by all who have passed by doing their daily exercise. The project is the brainchild of Sandy Quealey and was designed to help us through this challenging time. “Our micro furniture refurb business had pretty much come to a standstill, due to lockdown. We had a piece of furniture that we really didn’t know what to do with. My car was completely full of items we wanted to donate, and we are positioned near a reserve, so people are always walking past” explained Sandy. “I listened to a radio segment about how people were keeping themselves engaged in lockdown with projects like a community pantry. Knowing our cupboards were empty but my car and shed were full, I asked my partner, ‘Hey, can we set up a street library?’ He gave me a funny look, but not long after he had converted an old glass cabinet from a wall unit, put on a roof and ‘The Free Little Lockdown Library’ came to life” she continued. So far, Sandy has had a strong, positive response to the library. Some of the items have included books, plants, and games. A bear with a tag saying thankyou and painted rocks have also been donated. “We are very mindful of COVID lockdown restrictions. We really like that people are walking past and having a look as part of their exercise routines. Whilst we’ve put out some sanitizer, we also trust that our community will practice good hand hygiene, wear masks and physically distance to keep us all safe, “Even though we must keep a physical distance, small acts of kindness can make a huge difference to someone’s sense of wellbeing. The library is just one of many examples in our community of people trying to support each other through lockdown” she said. The Free Little Lockdown Library in Regentville was established for this current lockdown period only. It is located on Martin Street. v

The rise in popularity of finding and hiding painted rocks during lockdown has been huge. One local artist has captivated the Glenmore Park community with his amazing, hand painted rock designs. His name is David Stanley. Shortly after lockdown, David began painting and hiding rocks daily around Blue Hills Wetlands. Those who have been lucky to find his designs whilst doing their exercise liken it to finding treasure. The 100,000 strong NSW Rocks Facebook members also wait in anticipation each day to see what designs will be on offer to be found. “I have been an artist on and off in a professional sense for about fifty years” said David to the Glenmore Gazette. “I began as a survey draftsman, using pen and ink to draw plans and maps. Next, I worked as a biological illustrator in the Zoological Department of The School of Biological Sciences at Sydney University. This work was more ‘artistic’ in nature, being mostly freehand drawings of specimens, though it was still highly technical. After teaching primary school for just two years in the classroom, I was deployed as a teacher/ illustrator with the Department of Education illustrating distance education learning materials. This together with some additional freelance work in educational illustration and picture books meant more opportunity for imaginative work over the thirty years prior to retirement” he reflected. David has been drawing since early childhood and he loved making things. Making something from scratch required design and designs are developed through drawing. His art interests were always related to describing, telling a story, and designing which lead to illustration. Mr. Stanley’s painted rock design ideas come from his years as an illustrator and the time to paint them differs, “The time varies, some are small and simple fifteen minutes as a guess. Others if they become especially interestingly distracting, take more time than I could admit to myself. All-up in lieu of a night’s television. Apart from the simple joy of drawing and painting, the participation in a community project has many positives. Only the intent matters, and people from all ages and backgrounds are found, making, hiding, and hunting objects that they have invested some time, care, and affection into producing. This is all for someone else”. His current artwork remains graphic work on paper and wood-art. This includes small scale carving and sculptural works, especially the carving of Welsh love spoons, of the more intricate kind. For more information about David’s artwork, visit his blog at www.whimsicalwood.blog, Instagram at @whimsicalwood49art and Facebook at @whimsicalwood49. r Feature Article: [Cover] David at home painting rocks [Above] David’s wood-art | Images: David Stanley

HEALTH MATTERS
Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269
Chronic Migraine – Could it Really Have a Simple Solution? This article was inspired by a patient who has suffered ongoing debilitating migraines for some years. The patient attended the clinic while in the middle of a 4-day migraine attack, which had been preceded by visual aura. Her severe headache was accompanied by photophobia (sensitivity to light) and bouts of nausea and vomiting. The patient had spent a considerable amount of time suffering on her bathroom floor, sick and in semi-darkness. Medications had been ineffective, and she was desperate for relief. The Greek word for migraine is ‘hemikrania’ and comes from the Greek roots hemi (half ) and kranion (skull or head) literally ‘half the head’. Our modern term migraine defines a recurrent throbbing headache that typically affects one side (or area) of the head, often with intense pain, nausea, and sensitivity to light and sound. Migraines are of two types, those: 1. with aura - called classic migraine 2. without aura called common migraine Auras are visual-field or other disturbances that usually strike before the migraine itself: • Flashes of light • Shimmering spots or stars • Blind spots (scotomas), with simple geometric designs • Zigzag lines floating across the visual field • Other changes in vision, or
• Vision loss But can include other temporary symptoms: • Numbness, typically felt as tingling in a hand or one side of the face that may spread slowly along a limb • Speech or language difficulty • Muscle weakness 4.9 million Australians suffer migraines, 71% are women, 86% of working age. 7.6% of migraine sufferers experience chronic migraine (≥15 migraine days-per-month). The estimated $35.7 billion personal and financial costs Australia-wide are staggering: o $14.3 billion in health system costs o $16.3 billion of productivity costs o $5.1 billion other costs Unfortunately, these costs are likely needlessly incurred as the majority of migraines are generally easily treated, usually without pain killers. The above patient was given a full body remedial treatment with appropriate additional Muscle Elongation Therapy applied to specific head, neck, and shoulder muscles. Immediately following treatment, all migraine symptoms had abated and the patient sat smiling and yawning ready for home and sleep. If you’ve been suffering migraine or other headaches, feel free to call the clinic. Next month well take a further look at what science says about migraine cause.

No Need to Fear Evil
I spoke with someone recently who expressed a feeling that, with COVID-19, evil was prevailing. This person’s view of things reminded me of times when we have built sandcastles with the kids and warded off the rising tide until, finally, we are inundated with water. And all along there was this sense of the inevitable – that the waves would win. Carnage. But during what seems like endless lockdown, it is important to notice the signs telling us that God and goodness are still very much in play. The birds still sing beautifully over Glenmore Park. The stars cast their gentle gleam over the empty streets at night. The heart is still inspired by the kind word and loving deed. Walkers pass in the reserve and smile warmly at each other. The rain still brings a sense of rejuvenation. Things are incredibly difficult for many people, the challenges are great, and it is natural to feel some apprehension. But the signs tell us there is no need to fear evil. I pray that you and your family are safe at this time, and that you are able to notice the signs and to be encouraged in your soul in what feels like a rising tide.

Happy Fathers Day A Poem from Your Dog Before I was a Dog Dad: I had never been peed on, pooped on, drooled on, chewed on or nipped by puppy teeth. Before I was a Dog Dad: I had complete control of my thoughts, my body and mind. I slept all night without sharing the pillows or covers. Before I was a Dog Dad: I never looked into big soulful eyes and cried. I never felt my heart break into a million pieces when I couldn’t stop a hurt. I never knew something so furry and four legged could affect my heart so deeply. Before I was a Dog Dad: I had never held a sleeping puppy just because I couldn’t put it down. I had never gotten out of bed in the middle of the night to make sure all was well. I didn’t know how good it feels to feed a hungry puppy. I didn’t know that something so small could make me feel so important. Before I was a Dog Dad: I had never known the warmth, the joy, the love, the heartache, the wonderment or the satisfaction of being a dog Dad. Images: www.pixabay.com w

Spring is finally here! It’s hard to believe that the month of September is already upon us. Where has this year gone? We are in the midst of the lockdown across Greater Sydney; however, things are looking positive. The Premier has announced that restrictions should be eased by the end of the month, as the COVID-19 vaccination rates increase. Never has it been more important than now to support local business. Whether it’s a home delivered meal from a café or restaurant or a trade/service that you need for home, businesses in our community need our help. Get behind them and show your support where you can. The 2020 Tokyo Olympics have come and gone, and the Paralympic Games have begun. Millions across the country have been cheering on our Aussie athletes as they take on the world’s best. This month’s stories are filled with inspiration and hope – ‘hope’ that we can all finish the year positively, safely and healthily together. Stay kind, it makes you beautiful. Time to catch up on all the latest happenings in Your Community News.
