Kev’s Korner message A boy was once visiting a church with his grandmother. Grandma was explaining each of the stained-glass windows and telling him the saint’s name of the ones depicted. She got to the window of St. Jude and suddenly realised, “Maybe he doesn’t know what a saint is”. So she asked, “Darling, do you know what a saint is?” “Oh yes,” said the boy confidently. “A saint is someone who the light shines through”. I have loved that story since I was young because it explains what I feel every Christian should be like - a person who allows the light of Christ to shine through them. That’s the definition of a saint and it is what we are all called to be. Its what I have tried to be. Sanctity is not necessarily confined to those whom the Pope of the Catholic Church declares to be one. I think Australia has had many saints, not just Mary Mackillop. It was because of this realisation of contradiction and the past abuses of young people by members of the church that finally forced me to admit I can no longer remain a priest in the Catholic Church under the current hierarchy. I always wished that ordinary lay people would be per-
mitted to take a more active role in the leadership of their church but that is not likely to happen any time soon. I just wanted you at Glenmore Park to know how painful the decision to leave ministry was. It was not something I wanted to do as I feel I have more work to do. When I met Josefina, my resistance to the concept of a lifelong love was suddenly defeated. My love for her and my ultimate marriage was not a betrayal of my vows but a realisation that celibacy for me was not life-giving. I wanted to experience the normalcy of a loving relationship with a woman and perhaps the fruits of that relationship might come through a family of my own. When I watched the Padre Pio Church being built and the community forming inside it, I got an inkling of what it must be like to have a home of your own and a family. Since becoming a priest my family has always been my parish community and I will be disappointed to be unable to continue in my role as pastor here. Perhaps in time, the Catholic Church will realise what a natural thing it would be to have married clergy and reverse its centuries’ long ban on marriage. I hope and pray that I see it in my lifetime. I wish to thank
you who have been supportive of me while I have been founding parish priest of Padre Pio parish. Thanks to all the staff of Bethany and Caroline Chisholm schools who have supported me as well as the students who have expressed sadness when I left so suddenly. I hope that in time you will understand more clearly my reasons and forgive me if you feel I have deserted you for what some say are selfish or less noble motives. I know some of your questions will be answered in my soon-to-be-published book, "Unelected Silence". I will continue to pray for you and your families and hope that you will do the same for me. I hope our paths may cross again and I will have the opportunity to continue to spread my faith in the living Jesus. For the immediate short term that is going to be happening in the Philippines which will be my new home. But Glenmore Park is the place I have lived continually for the longest period of my adult life and will always be part of my happiest memories. I am sure that Glenmore Park has many saints who allow the light of Christ to shine through them and I know the community is richer for your participation in it.

DEALING WITH STRESS
Stress is everywhere! Everywhere people are suffering from different types of stress and stress related illness. Blood pressure. Anxiety. Anger. Sleeplessness. Heart conditions. Breakdown. Weight loss. Weight gain. Eating disorders. Mental disorders. Depression. People are even stressed about being stressed! It is difficult to pin down exactly why there is more stress. Perhaps it is the pace of life and life’s increasing complexity. Perhaps it is because of increased expectations on ourselves and each other. Perhaps it is because of a decline in moral and spiritual boundaries bringing less certainty. Perhaps it is all these and more. It is important to figure out why people are more stressed, but the more important question is; “What can be done about it?” Medication? Alcohol? More holidays? Some would think so, but these things don’t really give a long term answer. The Bible has real answers about stress which make a real difference in the long term and for eternity. Consider what the Apostle Paul says in his New Testament letter to the Philippians; “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” Notice it’s not “Don’t worry be happy”! It is, “Don’t worry...pray!” Look to God. Trust him with your life. Trust him, not just with the big or small things but with everything! The result? Peace from God! A calm and quiet confidence which is greater than anything this world or any other philosophy or way of thinking could ever possibly hope to give! What is this peace from God anchored on? Jesus! Jesus deals with your sin. He opens the door to eternity. He promises transformation of your life. No wonder Paul, a little further on writes, “I have learned to be content whatever the circumstances.” At one level the answer to stress is simple; “pray!” Pray to the God who loves you and who offers you peace. Yet, at another level, this requires much hard work undoing years of unhelpful ways of thinking and habits. Is it worth it? Yes! The outcome is a peace that will guard your heart and mind!

Let’s Count Kisses Karen Hull is a talented artist who only started drawing 5 years ago and is now a full time artist. She uses coloured pencils to create the most amazing artworks. Kalinda Jade Studios makes a move This month is an exciting time at Kalinda Jade Studios as the studio relocates to its new premises in South Penrith. Kalinda Jade Studios has been operating in Glenmore Park for five years but growth in student numbers and the addition of drums to the tuition menu have meant the studio has outgrown its previous location.
“Our new premises offer more tuition space and an improved recording studio,” said Kalinda McDonald, owner of Kalinda Jade Studios. “Many of our students come from Glenmore Park, so it was extremely important for us to find a new location that will give us the space we need, but remain convenient for our students. “The new South Penrith location is only five minutes away, located close to The Northern Road. Our new location also comes with increased parking space making it more convenient for students and their families, without requiring them to drive into Penrith.” Kalinda Jade Studios offers a range of tuition options including singing, piano, guitar and bass, drums, music theory, Higher School Certificate and School Certificate tuition, performance skills and recording. The studios cater to all levels of experience, however advanced and HSC tuition programs are a specialty. “It may only be June but pressure is starting to mount for HSC students,” Kalinda said. “We help students prepare for exams and performances, which can be stressful times, and we make sure they don’t forget how much they love their chosen instrument.All students learn differently so we tailor lesson plans to each student to make sure they achieve their goals. “Although our teachers are also professional musicians we know that you don't come to a lesson to hear us 'rock out' all the time. Healthy Living at Community Fair Glenmore Ridge was transformed into a hive of healthy activity last Saturday, with close to 500 people heading out to celebrate the first Glenmore Park Community Fair.Stockland have installed eight new fitness stations and 2.4 kms dedicated fitness circuit of walking trails and cycleways. Quiet Carriages’ Trial For Commuters The NSW Government’s is trialling ‘quiet carriages’ on the Blue Mountains Line following positive feedback from the successful implementation of the trial on the Newcastle and Central Coast Lines.The results show 98% of quiet carriage customers intend to continue using them in the future. Falun Gong in Glenmore Park
Andrew Toirkens started practicing Falun Gong in 2001 and has practiced it everyday since then and his wife, Erin, began in 2005. Andrew says “It is funny how we came together and what our lives were like prior to meeting each other. Erin suffered from depression and I was diagnosed with Bi Polar disorder, (Manic Depression), in 1992 and was heavily medicated for that. Not only prescription medications, but I was also self-medicating, alcohol and a mixture of illegal drugs. I was really a time bomb waiting to explode. I think most people would know someone like me in their family or amongst their friends. Pretty much always in some sort of trouble and never able to settle down. I was put on a disability pension in 1998. Over the years I went to Craft n Connect many different people for help, Counsellors, physiatrists, AA, numerous reMondays 9:30 – 11:30 fortnightly habilitations and different Opportunity to come together and work religions. I have been married now for 5 years and have two beautiful kids with Erin. I have not had any form of medication, alcohol, drugs or cigarettes for 10 years. I signed myself off the disability pension in July 2001 and have worked ever since. Falun Gong is an ancient form of qigong, the practice of refining the body and mind through special exercises and LED lights use far less meditation. Like tai chi, qigong is a vital part of many peoelectricity than normal halogen or ple's lives in Asia; almost every Chinese park is brimming incandescent lights, last a lot longer by the break of dawn with people practicing these arts. Taking the Distress Out of Stress People often wonder whether nutrition or stress is more important for health. Both are so important that it doesn’t matter. Some people will get away with poor diet if they are very easy-going, while others may survive the effects of stress through good diet. Knowing how to take the distress out of stress is mega-important. TO CALM THE MIND. Meditation or relaxation is the most effective solution to emotional stress. Here are three easy techniques: A two-minute meditation for busy people. Sit comfortably in a chair with feet flat on the floor, back straight and eyes closed. Feel the floor pressing upwards on your feet and the chair pressing upwards on your buttocks. Now become aware of your clothes contacting the skin all over your body. Next feel the breath going into your nose and lungs. Finally, become aware of all the sounds you can hear. Practise keeping all these ‘awarenesses’ mentally in view simultaneously and hold this state for two minutes. Do this exercise two or three times a day, preferably on an empty stomach, or at any time that you are under stress. Eye Relaxation Technique. Sit comfortably, let the eyelids fall shut and relax the little muscles surrounding the eyes. Continue relaxing these muscles until they have all let go. You will notice that the entire body has let go. Progressive Relaxation. Tense and then relax skeletal muscles progressively. STRESS MANAGEMENT COURSES are widely available in the community, such as at Hopewood Health Retreat, Wallacia, phone 4773 8401), and can be very effective.
RELAXATION AUDIOTAPES OR DVDs. There are many recorded relaxation sessions available. PHYSICAL ACTIVITY is a stress breaker. Just 20 mins of brisk walking can make you feel good for hours. Double the benefit by walking and talking with a good friend! YOGA. The excellent benefits are twofold – the exercises systematically stretch and flex the whole body, and they are usually done in a group. DEEP BREATHING. Take gentle deep breaths, counting 8 seconds in and 8 seconds out. Repeat two or three times. Never do more than 12 – 15 deep breaths at a time or you can hyperventilate. HOBBIES can be a great source of relaxation and a buffer against stress. SEE GREEN! We feel more at peace if we can see green trees, colourful flowers and blue water – rather than looking at brick walls all day. LAUGHTER is one of the best stress circuit-breakers. HAVE SUMPTUOUS SLEEP. Early to bed and early to rise makes us healthy, wealthy and wise. We need to sleep for seven to eight hours a night. BE PHILOSOPHICAL. Worry only about those things you can do something about, and do it, and forget all the rest! We can worry ourselves literally sick over other people’s problems – and it won’t help them one bit. FINALLY, remember that a smile will always make you feel better. A smile increases your face value! How can we deal with Stress effectively? We live in a fast paced world today where the stresses of modern day living, overworking and finger-tip conveniences are taking a toll on our health and our quality of life. We are constantly plugging in to an abundance of information and social media. Pulled in every direction and spoilt for choice on the super highway of instant gratification. Yet who is really content? At peace? Relaxed? or satisfied? There is a growing desire to relieve stress, a desire for union, to connect, a search for peace and wholeness. I am a Yoga teacher and every day I witness this search for people wanting to unite their separate selves with their " whole self" and to take time out. People want help in dealing with stress that doesn't come in a packet or a bottle and that is where the simple tools of Yoga can help us. The word Yoga means to 'yoke'. To unite body, breath, mind, and spirit as one. I invite people to stop for a moment and breathe. It is a fact that slow deep breathing calms the nerves, reduces blood pressure that is high, releases toxins, improves our respiratory, digestive and immune system functioning. Hatha Yoga is primarily concerned with three elements; yoga breathing: a fabulous tool in calming us, focusing the mind and relieving mental tension and anxiety. Asana's- yoga poses; help to keep the body well , balanced, free of tensions, and also- relaxation techniques to help people to feel a sense of deep calm, control, peace and contentment. When you put these three elements together you have the tools to deal with stress and are more relaxed. Yoga is for everyone, every body, every age. My teacher Swami Sarasvati shares the philosophy that - "if you don't use it you lose it" and that laughter is the best medicine, to worry less and laugh more! Yes, yoga does have physical benefits like improved posture, relief from back pain, emotional balance, increased flexibility, strength, balance and improved energy levels. Yes Yoga does help with depression, anxiety, weight loss, breathing disorders, hormonal imbalances, and brings clarity of mind but most importantly yoga is the best tool to live a stress less life! I teach teenagers, 70 year olds, pregnant ladies, breast feeding mums, gym junkies, athletes, doctors, nurses, builders, professionals and menopausal women. In our classes we are all equal regardless of age, sex, race, occupation, disability or colour. I see people connecting with their inner self and their spiritual warriors. I know that yoga works, that yoga is a beautiful way of living!

Diabetes! You would have to be living under a rock to not have heard that the number of people with diabetes is rising, but what does this mean? Diabetes is a disorder where the body cannot properly use of the glucose it gets from food. We all need glucose (or sugar) in our blood, as it is the most efficient energy source. However, if you have too much sugar in the blood, then you may feel tired all the time, be thirsty and need to go to the toilet more often. Unfortunately many people who have diabetes have no symptoms. Factors that increase the risk of diabetes are the aging population, the fact that we are less active, and we are becoming more overweight. There are three main types of diabetes: Type 1, Type 2, and Gestational Diabetes. Type 1 is usually diagnosed in children and young adults; Type two is usually in older, sedentary, overweight people; and Gesta-

I am not sure on the amount of entries this year but last year is was reported that over 53,000 babies were entered and the Today Show reported that this year included a record amount of entrants. On the day the winners were announced I was rushing around getting ready to drop her off at daycare and head to work when I got a call and a lady said “Are you watching the Today Show?” I replied “No” then she went on to say “Well you may not know, Kyra has been chosen as one of our winners” I was speechless!
