Jordan Springs Retirement Village Launch Last month, as the storm clouds surrounded the area, the planned event to introduce the new retirement village at Jordan Springs to its very first visitors looked like it was going to be a washout. However, right as the event started, the sun came streaming through the clouds and a lovely blue sky appeared! The guests sat down next to the village’s very own waterway to enjoy a gourmet BBQ dinner, whilst being entertained by Wayne and Ann from Vintage FM. Most of the visitors were delighted to see the secret water garden, which will be a feature of the new village that is about to start construction with the first residents planning on moving in later this year. New villas are priced from just $599,000 and are located just across the road from Jordan Springs Marketplace. When complete, the village will feature an exclusive resident’s clubhouse with an indoor heated pool, gym, cinema and a resident’s bar and lounge. Most of the visitors are now looking forward to inspecting the new display suite, with the official opening on the 6th of April and enjoying another BBQ lunch! You can call Carolyn on 0430 189447 for full details.

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
Ash Wednesday in March commenced the season of Lent in the Christian Calendar. It had its origin in the early second century after the Resurrection of Jesus the Christ. Initially lasting one to three days it slowly developed to the current 40 days of observance. This development was due to the influence of Saint Athanasius, an early Egyptian Christian. However it was never uniformly established throughout the Church, with the eastern churches varying the length of observance. It was during the Middle Ages that the practice of marking the forehead with ashes became a common practice. (The ashes derive from burning the palm crosses from the previous year that remind of the entry into Jerusalem of the Christ). When the forehead was marked it was accompanied by a prayer: “remember that you are dust and to dust you shall return”. This is a salient reminder that to all intents and purposes our life span is brief in relation to the ongoing path of history. Indeed very few live to be older than 110 years!! Yet within our life span is the wonderful challenge to utilize our ability to the best in thought, word and action, not governed by greed but applying the willingness to give in order that life is enhanced. Lent emerged to enable greater concentration on life style of which fasting is used as one enabling factor. It is of interest to note the media emphasis on diet and exercise, often considered to be avant garde, is in reality a secular development of the true religious fast! Lent also encourages meditation to enhance life style. This is the practice of taking a particular teaching from Jesus the Christ and giving not only thoughtful consideration, but also application to life, which in turn makes our prayers more meaningful.

Local Netball Club Ready for Third Season As Jordan Springs Netball Club prepares for a new season, their third in the Penrith District Netball Association Competition, the local Club is set to have their best year ahead on the court. Last season saw 120 players across 16 teams, with eight senior teams and eight junior teams ranging from the Under 8’s to the Under 15’s. “Being only our second-year, I think we had a great season as a Club. We won the March Past at the Opening Ceremony. We had 1 team make the finals, with several teams only just missing out. We also had 4 umpires receive their district badges” said Michelle Barnes, President of Jordan Springs Netball Club. The Club currently has 150 players registered across 18 teams for the upcoming season. This consists of seven senior teams and eleven junior teams ranging from the Under 7’s to the Under 17’s. “Heading into our third year, I’m looking forward to seeing the improvement in our players and teams. Seeing more teams make the Finals and potential Grand Finals” explained Michelle. There are still vacancies of 1 or 2 players in most age groups. If you would like more information about Jordan Springs Netball Club, find them on Facebook.

Sarah’s Brave Shave
The World’s Greatest Shave is one of Australia’s biggest fundraisers. The annual event, which first began in 1998, is where family, friends, businesses and individuals come together to raise money by getting sponsored to be brave and shave, colour or wax their heads, chest or face to raise money for the Leukaemia Foundation. For local resident, Sarah Rosso, raising money for such a cause was extremely close to her heart; her mother, Donna Earl, was diagnosed with cancer just years earlier. Through her years of undergoing treatment, Sarah had always admired how inspiring and beautiful she was - even without hair. To show her mother how much she supported and loved her, Sarah signed up for the World’s Greatest Shave on Wednesday the 20th of February this year. Sadly, just 11 hours later, Donna lost her battle with the terrible illness and passed away peacefully at home. After her passing, Sarah was more determined than ever to make this event as big as she possibly could. On Wednesday the 13th of March, Sarah was joined by her father, David Earl, at the 2-hour event at Jordan Springs Shopping Centre. Her father shaved his beard, whilst Sarah bravely shaved her head, in hope to not only raise some money but also to spread awareness of Leukaemia. With the help of all the amazing businesses that donated to Sarah’s raffle, her caring sponsors and the help of the team from Jordan Springs Shopping Centre, she was able to raise over $1300, with donations still rolling in even though the event is officially over. All the money raised on the day from raffles and donations has been contributed to Sarah’s fundraising link through the World’s Greatest Shave website. Sarah would love to encourage others to participate in this worthy cause, “Be brave and shave! If you can’t, you can always permanently colour, spray your hair with coloured hair spray or just cut your hair. If none of these are an option for you, donating to the World’s Greatest Shave website or local events are a great way to get involved or you could even just share the events on social media. Every little bit of publicity helps”. If you would like to donate, visit http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/sarahjanerosso. The Healthy Body Company - Four Years in Jordan Springs Four years ago, The Healthy Body Company launched in Jordan Springs. As the first location for a new brand, the health precinct in Jordan Springs was ideal. Originally opening with just one physio, the practice was open four days per week. “The last four years have flown by. Working with other health professionals in the area to get great outcomes for local people has been a wonderful experience” said The Healthy Body Company’s Jude Holroyd. Fast forward to 2019, and there are now four full time physiotherapists in Jordan Springs. The Healthy Body Company is open Monday to Saturday, from early to late. The practice offers expert physiotherapy services plus specialised group classes for a range of groups including those with Type 2 Diabetes and Parkinson’s Disease. The team at Jordan Springs is motivated and passionate, and with the leadership of the practice principal Jude Holroyd, is providing high quality physiotherapy services to the Jordan Springs community. Jude supports his team to be the very best they can be and works closely with a broader team to ensure that every client to The Healthy Body Company achieves the best outcome possible. Jude is joined by Renee Coleman. Renee is a local physiotherapist who has additional training as a yoga teacher and is also qualified in martial arts. Renee understands what it means to train hard, and she brings that understanding to help her support her patients to achieve the best outcomes. Nathan Duguid went to high school at St Dominic‘s College and after studying physiotherapy, joined The Healthy Body Company. Nathan spends his weekends working as a sports physiotherapist and supported the Brothers’ teams through 2018. Nathan has developed a strong interest in strength training and uses this experience and expertise in achieving great outcomes. Emily Marks is a dance physiotherapist. Having been a dancer herself since childhood, Emily is ideally placed to support the local dance community to remain injury free and performing at their best. Emily is available to do pointe assessments and to manage any dance injuries that may come along. Emily also loves working with older populations. She believes that everyone should be able to be supported to be the best they can be at every age. Jordan Springs was the birth-place of The Healthy Body Company, which is now also located in Penrith and Caringbah, and the whole team is so pleased that they have had the opportunity to be in Jordan Springs from the start. “We were one of the first businesses in Jordan Springs. It feels like we have grown with the community, it is fantastic seeing familiar faces here in our clinic and around the place” said Jude Holroyd. What happens when a local business becomes a fundamental part of a community? It becomes a great place to work and visit. U The team at The Healthy Body Company Jordan Springs | Image Supplied
Through Matthew’s Eyes Ropes Crossing Photographer Matthew Lynch has an eye for detail. Picking up his camera, the talented local knows how to capture beauty in everything he sees behind the lens. Matthew’s interest with photography began at an early age, when growing up in the Blue Mountains. “I’ve always had an interest in photography for as long as I can remember. As a child, I’d often take those disposable Kodak cameras with me on school excursions to capture the day’s adventures. As I grew older, I’d borrow a friend’s DSLR camera to go out taking pictures in the national park. Having grown up in the Blue Mountains, I’m quite partial to capturing the beauty in nature. So, I guess that’s probably where my inspiration came from” Lynch told the Jordan Springs Gazette. By now, you may have seen some of Matthew’s stunning local landscape photography, particularly his recent series taken at Ropes Creek Station. For many of us, a stroll in the local park is an opportunity to exercise or even relax. For Matthew, it’s an opportunity to find the beauty in things we often take for granted. “When photographing local landscapes, what I enjoy the most is being able to capture the beauty of something that would be often unseen or simply overlooked. I like to try and find a perspective that isn’t the norm” he explained. Matthew’s favourite subject to photograph is his family, “In particular, my beautiful wife Lorna and our five lovely children. The reason I purchased my first camera was to take pictures of them when we go away on holidays. It’s one of the best decisions I’ve ever made”. For now, Matthew’s future plans with his photography are simple. “I don’t really have any plans, it’s just something that I enjoy doing. However, if I did “plan” anything around my photography, it would be to continue to enjoy it” he reflected. So, what’s the key to taking a good photo? “I’m not sure there is an answer to that question. Photography is so subjective and open to interpretation. No two people are ever going to see the same things in one image” Matthew ended. U Ropes Creek Station | Image: Matthew Lynch Photographic

PARENTS CORNER
Guest article by Professor Matt Sanders
Single Parenting Single parents often say they feel it’s more difficult to discipline a child without a partner’s support. But it’s very important to approach discipline in exactly the same way as if you were parenting with someone else. It’s vital to have a game plan and be consistent. That means setting house rules that don’t fluctuate. It may surprise some people to know that children like boundaries. Kids very easily become comfortable with the familiarity of a routine at bedtime, at mealtimes or when it’s time to get out of the house in the morning. Positive and predictable routines mean discipline will become much easier. Life won’t have to be full of big battles over little issues! Another worry many single parents express is the lack of a significant male or female influence in the household. Mothers may feel this more keenly when they’re raising a son alone, as many fathers do when they’re raising a daughter. It’s always important to encourage your child to have role models and mentors. Role models can show children how to behave, and what is the appropriate thing to do. So, single parents may want to look for opportunities for their children to get to know and have other men or women in their life. It could be a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a trusted family friend or a sports coach. Having someone who will serve a mentoring role throughout the child’s life can be a great example to – and support for – the child. Where Every Child Matters
Pokémon Pokken Tournament DX Pokémon Pokken Tournament DX is a game that begins with 23 characters, where each of them are unique in their own way. In this Pokémon game, there are 9 different game modes. There is one that is a standout, and that is battle mode. You firstly choose 1 of the 23 Pokémon and then you choose backup Pokémon. There are Pokémon that help you during battle, in case you are losing, and they will hurt your opponent so you can get time to plan your next move. After that, you choose your arena that you will battle in and there are 20 different ones. You will then have a fight until you beat your other Pokémon, where you can do special combos or quick attacks. There are a wide range of attacks you can do, and my favourite is the special attack. It is a very cool move and is very effective to use on your opponents. It is a first to 3 battle, so when you win 3 times you completely win! I recommend this game to anyone over the age of 9 years and rate it 6.5/10 (only available on Nintendo Switch).

School Holiday Struggles As the school holidays are fast approaching, parents are considering what options they have regarding care and entertainment for their children during the two weeks they are not at school. For many families, the option to take leave from work is not a viable one and they are left to find appropriate options that are suitable for their family’s circumstance. Families with one or both parents at home may struggle with affording entertainment options for their children and will be on the hunt for free or low-cost ideas of things to do with their children. Some families with the financial means and physical ability to be around during the holidays may be considering alternative ways to entertain their children. Whichever situation your family is in, there is a solution and the answer is: playdates. A playdate is simply an organised time for two or more children to spend time with one another. They may happen at someone’s home or at a public area such as a park or play centre. If a playdate is one-toone, it can strengthen friendships and establish strong bonds outside of the school environment. The best part is that there is no age limit. Playdates might seem like a simplistic answer to the woes of school holiday struggles, but they can certainly meet the needs of all families if you bind together to create the ‘village’ often talked about in parenting. Social interaction in a variety of settings is vital in developing a child’s sense of belonging, enhances communication and enables for character development. By allowing your children to visit a friend’s house, they gain additional insight into the world around them and learn to cooperate. So, parents if you have the means to invite your child’s friend over for a playdate these holidays, do it! Not only will your children have the chance to play with peers they like to spend time with, it will aid them in becoming more independent and confident as they mature. Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027
We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

Did you survive the social-media meltdown last month? Thankfully, the Gazette powers on without the reliance of internet connectivity - you'll always find us and the details of local businesses aplenty neatly tucked away in your letterbox, the first week of the month. We're on the cusp of Easter, School Holidays and remembering those who served and died as Anzac Day approaches. Here at the District Gazette 'We Live. Love.Local'. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Go easy on yourself. Whatever you do today, let it be enough.'
