Carruthers Creates History 14-year old Coby Carruthers from Jordan Springs has become the first junior golfer to ever win the Don Watson Handicap Match Play Trophy at Leonay Golf Club, defeating another junior Cooper McLean 3 and 2 in the Final of the local event. The Match Play Championship has been in existence for the past fifty years and was re-named in honour of Don Watson in 1989. Club Captain Ross Butcher said, “Coby is not only the first junior to win the Don Watson trophy, but he is also the youngest player in the last fifty years to win the Handicap Match Play event”. Carruthers is currently in Year 9 at St Dominics College and has his sights firmly set on becoming a Golf Professional, once he finishes his schooling. Despite his young age, Coby has already achieved a single figure handicap of 5.4, trains 3 to 4 times per week in sessions ranging from 1 to 1.5 hours and is working tirelessly on improving his technique, strength and all-round golf knowledge. Coby’s role model on the Professional Circuit is former World #1 Rory McIlroy and his coach is his father, Andrew Carruthers. His following major tournament was the 2019 Regional Academy of Sport ‘North vs South Cup’, which was played at Riverside Oaks Golf Club from the 24th to the 26th May.

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
What is interesting is that the long history of the development in the sciences has not diminished the long history of the religious dimension in attempting to answer the ‘why’. Why this life, why this universe. Thus religion remains a force, a reality that cannot be ignored. Currently in this period of history while needing a fresh interpretation of the Christian faith, none the less the faith is a given in the search for the ‘why’. Jesus the Christ asks the question ‘who do you say I am’. In turn we can ask the question ‘who do we think we are’. This juxtaposition provides a whole new impetus. Some twenty years ago the largest Christian Church, the Roman Catholic, at its highest level argued that there are two ways to salvation. One is to be baptized into the Christian faith, the other in accepting that there are many ways to heaven. Thus what is good and honest in other religions is not to be rejected. Protestantism in all its variety has not yet resolved the question with each denomination arguing for its own interpretation. Surely what Jesus the Christ taught is a lesson still to be embraced by many believers and non- believers in belief and practice: the acceptance of the other in love. With religions and the sciences it is not the denying of realities, but the acceptance of the reality that is in essence from the time of our birth until our death we grow within the reality of life determined by our environment and response. For the Christian it is growing ‘in Christ’ with all the implications that love demands. Thus in this period of history while needing fresh interpretations, none the less the faith gives a ‘given’ in which to search for the ’why’.

Talking to the Animals Many dog owners would agree that it can be a daily struggle for your pooch to behave. One minute they’re laying down quietly at your feet and the next they’re barking and digging a hole in your backyard. For local dog trainer Paula Smith, it’s all in a day’s work. Raised in the Blue Mountains and always having animals, Paula has been training dogs for four years. She provides private training sessions to people in their homes or local parks and teaches them basic obedience and help with behavioural challenges such as toileting, jumping and barking. She also offers dog walking, adventure walks where they go hiking, dog transport, assistance with companion dogs and therapy dogs. Paula has a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel named ‘Ladybelle’ who is also a therapy dog. “I have lots of enquiries about toileting, boredom, digging, barking and jumping. Many people with smaller dogs that live inside the home have issues with socialisation. What I mean is they don’t get outdoors enough, mainly because people think the house and backyard is enough for a little dog to exercise. What the owners fail to realise is all dogs, no matter what size, have needs as a dog. That is to explore and be exposed to the world in a positive way. When dogs have bad experiences, it impacts them and they can become fearful, then the issues start to arise such as barking, leash reactivity, aggression or severe timidness” Paula explained. She also said that it’s easier to teach a dog a new behaviour rather than changing a behaviour. For instance, if a dog jumps and won’t stay still while you’re trying to put on their leash, you teach the dog a new behaviour to put the leash on. That can be quite fast to teach a dog. Whereas, loose leash walking, barking and toileting tends to take a longer time as there are lots of small adjustments as the dog progresses before you reach the final behaviour, utilising positive training. “I love working with people and seeing the end results of a person that can communicate and understand how to listen and work with their dog in a positive and kind way. When I have helped a person work with their dog to the point where they trust each other and enjoy life together, be it outdoors or in the home, it’s very rewarding” smiled Paula. So, what’s the secret to having a happy dog? “As guardians of our dogs, we need to provide for them a life that is enriching and satisfies their needs as a dog. Dogs are inherently social. Include your dog in your life, be consistent, create good habits and reward them for good behaviour be it with your attention, toys or with treats” she ended. The Club was formed under the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. We are actively seeking new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs and currently there is no waiting list for applications. The Tuesday lunch for May was held at the St Marys Band Club and incorporated a guided coach tour around the historical sites within St Marys and surrounds. The guide was a member of the St Marys Historical Society. The club held a second meeting for the craft group, which again proved to be an interesting event for some of our female members. Members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme. This includes access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance plans, developing new interests and staying active. Upcoming events include a train/ferry trip to Manly with some of the local points of interest and Christmas in July, which is being organised. A trip to Floriade is also being investigated. The Jordan Springs Probus Club meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, 09:30 for a 10:00 start. Local Mum Gives Back, through Play What started as a group of new mums’ catching up for a coffee and play date has turned into something much bigger - Messy Play. Local resident and mum, Shareema Allen, is the founder of Messy Play Playgroup. Messy Play Playgroup is a Jordan Springs based playgroup backed by Playgroup NSW. A typical session for Messy Play Playgroup involves children 0-5 years old, exploring, experimenting with different textures and materials. Children enjoy the opportunity to make a mess and to create their own masterpiece. The importance of social interactions and texture play in the development of a child is paramount. Providing a social and educational environment through play-based activities, allows children to learn beneficial social and emotional skills that see them thrive right through to adulthood. Shareema has been working in early childhood for the past 17 years. Her invaluable experience assists with developing programs that captivate and engage toddlers. She recently decided to stop working and focus on giving to her community, whilst caring for her children. Shareema’s children have recently been diagnosed with a disability, Ehlers Danlos Syndrome. This sees her spending countless hours at appointments including hydrotherapy, as well as speech and occupational therapy. Running Messy Play Playgroup has provided Shareema the opportunity to flexibly volunteer around her children’s needs. “My passion is being able to provide an equal opportunity for children of all aspects and their families a chance to learn through play and to enjoy being a child” she said. Messy Play is calling out for resources that will assist them with their fundraising needs. To find out more, visit facebook.com/messyplayplaygroup. If you would like to join Messy Play Playgroup, drop past the sessions held on Fridays at 10:00am, located at the Jordan Springs Community Hub, for more information. We wish Shareema, Messy Play Playgroup and Playgroup NSW continued success with their wonderful program for local children.

A Place for Little Artists
Is your child a budding Picasso or Van Gogh? Local resident Geeta Bhargava has created The Little Wooden Hut, a place where little artists can come together and express themselves with art classes. Located at Ropes Crossing, The Little Wooden Hut caters for school aged children from 5 years and above. Throughout the school term, students are taught the basics of art like the colour wheel and colouring techniques with different mediums. During the school holidays, the workshops are more intense, and they run for 2 to 3 hours, where they explore art forms like collage, glass painting and acrylic on canvas. “The idea for The Little Wooden Hut began in 2015, as a hobby. I was painting artwork for family and friends, whilst working as an Architectural Designer. I realised that my passion lied in painting and creative work and it was a job I could see myself doing forever! I soon took the plunge and gave up my fulltime job to focus on The Little Wooden Hut. When doing customised artworks, one of my friends suggested that I could teach her daughter art. My art class journey started last year, and it continues to grow” explained Geeta. With different classes available, Geeta takes a maximum of 8 students per class. The classes take place Wednesdays and Thursdays from 5:30pm to 6:30pm and Saturdays from 9:00am to 10:00am and 10:00am to 11:00am. They are a registered provider for the NSW Governments Creative Kids Scheme, where parents of school aged children can redeem their Creative Kids voucher. “As a child, I loved to paint and draw since the age of 5. I believe in continual learning and love to explore different art forms around the world. Art is a powerful medium to convey messages or emotions and is one of the forms we can pass on to our younger generations as a method of learning about history, heritage and creating a future” ended Geeta. For more information, you can find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/thelittlewoodenhut or call on 0430 038609. U One of the activities you’ll find in the classes | Image Supplied

There's no doubt we've hit Winter. I know I've said it before, but Winter is my favourite season. I love the crisp morning air, and wonderful array of soups and stews that grace my dinner table during the season. This month Narelle talks about parenting and self care on page 8. Providing some great guidance on keeping the joy alive while juggling all the balls of busy parents. Don't miss out on our iFly giveaway on page 4. If you've 'ever dreamed of flying' now's your chance! Here at the District Gazette 'We Live.Love. Local'. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Don't just be good to others. Be good to yourself too.'
