From the Editor As we come to the end of 2013, it is timely to reflect upon all that has happened over the past 12 months. Hasn’t the year just raced by? The first part, a flurry of the usual activity, the constant chasing of tails and getting nowhere, the latter part marred by devastating fires, followed by torrential rains. Our thoughts and prayers go out to all the people affected by the bushfires and storms. May the Christmas season bring some hope and joy to your lives. December brings with it the much anticipated ‘Grand Opening’ of the Jordan Springs Shopping Centre, an event NOT to be missed! Read all about it on page 1. As always, we have some excellent reading to get you right into the Christmas Spirit, not to mention some truly delightful Christmas recipes on page 17. It has been my absolute pleasure to bring YOUR community news to your letterbox this past year, and I look forward to the year ahead, as this wonderful community grows and develops! My name is Adam Taylor, I am the local Anglican minister. I was a high school maths teacher, who was frustrated (like most maths students) by a belief that there was more to life than algebra and calculus! I was committed to my students learning but I knew there really was more to life than mathematics. The something more is Jesus Christ. The birth of Jesus is the source of our society whipping itself into a frenzy for the month of December in readiness for a great day of celebration. Sadly many people I meet dread Christmas Day. The gathering of relatives, the travelling from one place to another, the tantrums of overtired and overfed children, could the day please just end! Just like many a maths lesson. I hope the day does not end. In the manger that first Christmas lay Jesus, God’s Son. On the night of his birth, the Bible writer Luke tells us, an angel announced to some shepherds, “Fear not, for behold, I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. 11 For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord.” (Luke 2:10-11) Christmas is a time to celebrate, for it recalls the love and kindness of God who sent his Son into the world that through his sacrificial death in his early 30’s we could have a restored friendship with God. This is reason to celebrate, for Jesus brings purpose to life. We at St TOMS plan to celebrate and would love for you to join us at our annual Carols in the Park

Llandilo Public School Principal: Bruno Zuliani Dear Friends of Llandilo Public School, What a year it has been! Our learning community can hardly believe that our Kindergarten students have all but completed their first year of schooling. In addition our Year 6 students are about to celebrate the conclusion of the final chapter of their Primary School journey, with the Year 6 Farewell to be held shortly at St Mary’s Leagues Club. Impact of the fires in the mountains are still resonating with so many staff and students from both public and private schools having suffered from the devastation. Our community as always rallied together at this time of need and we raised $400 and in a small way assisted charities helping the victims. As the festive season approaches and the academic year draws to a close, I would like to congratulate our girls and boys for their wonderful commitment and capacity to engage with the many programs and initiatives available to them through our school. In the October issue of the Gazette, I gave you some strategies for resolving sibling conflict and rivalry. It was such a big topic that I had to split it into two parts. Here is Part 2 … • Role model for your kids what relationship repair looks like. If you have roused on the kids and you feel like you went too far, lost your cool, got it wrong, or responded from your own stuff rather than being logical and reasonable, you can apologise to your kids for your behaviour. You can talk about what you said or did that was mistaken and what you think you could have done better. This is good modelling. Just never make your kids responsible for YOUR feelings and behaviour (own them), never make your kids responsible for making you feel better, and never ever beg for their forgiveness. • Do the “kid swap” on a regular basis. When your kids have their friends over they are usually at their best behaviour. When you send your kids off to someone else’s house to play, they are usually on their best behaviour. I really like the kid swap, and will have up to 6 boys in my tiny little house on a regular basis. It is wonderful to see how well the children can get along. • As Dr Laura Markham says “love each one the best”. This is different to treating them all the same. As your children get older it becomes too hard to treat them all the same. One will have a birthday party invite and the others will not. That’s life – there is very little equity or sameness. However, be careful that you speak positively about each of your children and give each of them your love, care and attention. A work colleague of mine years ago told me that growing up she thought she was Mum’s “special one”. She was one of eight children. One day at lunch, sitting around the table with her adult siblings, they each said they thought they were the special one, the one that Mum loved the best. I can almost guarantee that Mum did not spend hours with each of her eight children each day. Insurance ... How much cover is enough? Under insurance is a huge problem in Australia, mainly because many of us tend to overlook the fact that a member of our family could become critically ill, injured or worse, pass away. Essentially, we ignore the risk and figure that it won’t happen to us. Therefore we don’t prepare for the associated financial risk. I don’t need to tell everyone that this is a naive view –serious illness and accidents happen to people everyday and although we all hope it doesn’t happen to us or our loved ones, none of us are immune. Secondly, many of us are not accurately aware of the financial risk if something unforeseen should happen. Most people are aware of and understand life insurance and many have cover, either held in super or directly, but more than half have insufficient cover to maintain the family lifestyle in the event of the insured’s death. To Calculate life insurance we normally look at the clients expenses, debts and income requirements to determine how much is needed for the family, then take into consideration the assets available and use insurance to cover the gap. The expense component, often referred to as clean-up, normally includes funeral costs, legal costs and other expenses that surround the death of an individual. Some also like to include additional funds to cover time off work and the like. This amount is usually relatively small and fairly consistent, ranging from around $5,000 to $25,000. Most clients require both partners’ incomes to service debts; therefore in general, clients will need to have sufficient cover to pay down most or all of their debts. If all debts are paid down the family will be able to keep all assets, most notably the family home, with no debts against them. This is important even in the event of a nonworking spouse. Income requirements are an often forgotten part of the insurance calculations. In many cases, even without debts, the surviving family will have insufficient income to meet expenses. When calculating income requirements it is normal to separate into income required for children and income for the surviving spouse. We then calculate a per annum figure for each, and determine the length of time the income is required. The reason we separate the two is that income for the children usually has a different time factor to that of the spouse. The income shortfall can be hard to determine, but a good financial planner will be able to guide you through this process. Often income requirements may change; a spouse may require more income initially whilst they are “getting back on their feet” or are taking care of the children and unable to work. As an example they may need $20,000 pa for the first 5 years and $10,000 pa for the following 10 years. Once we have determined the income needs and time periods for children and spouse, we calculate the lump sum required to provide that income. Once the three amounts are combined and we have identified the needs, we then subtract the family’s available assets to provide for the above expenses. These include Superannuation, investments and cash, to identify the cover required.

CHRISTMAS COOKING Mini Chocolate Puds
Eat Me Fruitcakes
• Easy • Makes 24 Ingredients 150g butter, chopped 200g dark chocolate, chopped 1/2 cup raw caster sugar 2 eggs, lightly beaten 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 cup plain flour 1/4 cup cocoa powder 100g white chocolate, chopped 6 green glace cherries, halved, thinly sliced 6 red glace cherries, finely chopped Method 1. Preheat oven to 180°C/160°C fan-forced. Lightly grease a 24hole, 1 1/2 tablespoon-capacity mini muffin pan. 2. Place butter and dark chocolate in a large heatproof microwavesafe bowl. Microwave on MEDIUM (50%) for 2 -3 minutes, stirring every minute with a metal spoon, or until melted and smooth. Stir in sugar. Stand for 10 minutes to cool slightly. 3. Whisk in eggs and vanilla. Sift over flour and cocoa. Whisk to combine. 4. Divide mixture between prepared holes. Level tops with a small spatula or spoon. Bake for 12 minutes or until tops are firm. Stand in pan for 5 minutes. Turn top-side down onto a wire rack to cool completely. 5. Place white chocolate in a heatproof microwave-safe bowl. Microwave on MEDIUM (50%) for 1 to 2 minutes, stirring every 30 seconds with a metal spoon, or until melted and smooth. Drizzle teaspoons of melted chocolate over each brownie to form ‘custard’. 6. Top with 2 pieces green glace cherry to make holly leaves and a few pieces of red glace cherry for berries. Stand for 20 minutes or until chocolate has set. Serve.
• For capable cooks • Makes 8 Ingredients 500g mixed dried fruit 125g glace ginger, finely chopped 100g glace cherries, finely chopped 250ml (1 cup) brandy, warmed 125g Western Star Butter, at room temperature 100g (1/2 cup, firmly packed) dark brown sugar 2 eggs 190g (1 1/4 cups) plain flour Method 1. Preheat oven to 150°C. Combine dried fruit, glace ginger, glace cherries and 185ml (3/4 cup) brandy in a large bowl. 2. Use an electric beater to beat butter, sugar and eggs in a bowl for 3 minutes or until pale and creamy. Stir in the fruit mixture. Sift over the combined flour, ginger, mixed spice and bicarbonate of soda. Stir in pecans. Divide among eight 185ml (3/4 cup) mini loaf pans, or eight 5cm (base measurement), 8cm (top measurement), 5cm-deep square cardboard cake cases. Smooth surfaces. 3. Bake for 40 minutes or until a skewer inserted into centres comes out clean. Brush with remaining brandy. Set aside to cool completely. 4. Roll out icing on a work surface dusted with icing sugar until 3mm thick. Cut shapes from icing. Brush cakes with jam. Top with icing shapes. 5. Serve fruitcakes warm with custard. NOTE: Eat-me fruitcakes can be made up to a week ahead. Pop each cake in its own little gift box and tie with a generous bow and gift card, or wrap in cellophane and secure with ribbons.

Fantastic Open Day with Dr Harry! Thank you to everyone who attended the Open Day on Sunday 17th November. The weather was terrible and it rained all day, however we still had many people visit and stand in the queue to meet Dr Harry Cooper. From the comments we are hearing, Dr Harry was worth the wait and the rain!! Our guests had an opportunity to line up to meet Dr Harry Cooper where he gave advice on dogs, cats and other animals whilst having his photo taken and signing autographs. The hospital tours were very popular, and not just because it gave the guests a chance to get dry and stay out of the rain. Eden and Kristie showed many people through the hospital and explained all of the different pieces of equipment that we have. A hospital tour is a great way for you to see what goes on behind our doors. Dr Harry Cooper judged the dog competitions and the winners received a large bag full of goodies kindly donated by Walking With A PawPose, Woof N Whiskers Pet Minding, Fluffy and Knuckles, Dog Tech, Pets Charming, Boehringer, Hills, Bayer, Zoetis, Dermcare and The Rosehip Specialists. Check out our Facebook page for the list of winners. We also hosted an online cat competition, as we all know that cats are more comfortable in their own home. Check out our Facebook page for the list of winners. A special thank you to Denise and Lorraine for handmaking and donating 2 quilts, which were raffled on the day. The raffle proceeds were donated to The Guide Dogs NSW. The sausage sizzle was a great success, as they filled our bellies on a rainy day! All proceeds were donated to The Guide Dogs NSW. We also had the world’s biggest model dog, Gulliver, attend our Open Day. Gulliver is a Guide Dog replica, who weighs 690kg, is 4.3 metres tall on his trailer, which is 2.3m wide, and 5m long. Travis, thanks for bringing Gulliver!! A special thank you to all of our staff and volunteers who helped out on the day. We could not have done it without you all! Thank you for working in the carpark, the jumping castles, and the BBQ.
