Llandilo Post Office Celebrates 5 Years
The City of Penrith RSL Sub Branch are currently recruiting and looking for new members. If you or members of your family have served in any of the services, including reservists past and present, you are eligible to join the RSL Sub Branch as a veteran. The RSL Sub Branch furthers the well being of serving and affiliate members, their families and the families of their former members. They provide a network of support for veterans and their families including assisting with appropriate contacts/services if needed. This year, the City of Penrith RSL Sub Branch recommends members of the public participate in their own ANZAC Day Driveway Services. These services were highly successful last year, during the pandemic. The Dawn Service/March in Penrith is a closed, ticketed event with 500 invited veterans, partners, and dignitaries. The Women’s Veterans Network Association (WVNA) will be holding their inaugural ANZAC event this year. The wreath laying ceremony at Memory Park is also a small, ticketed event. The ANZAC School Service returns to the Paceway at Penrith. All local schools in the Penrith region have been invited, with 800 students expected. All events are COVID controlled and have a COVID Safe Plan. For more information about joining the City of Penrith RSL Sub Branch, contact 4728 5225 from Monday to Thursday from 9am to 2pm or email subbranch@penrithrsl.com.au. r

Jenny and Raj Rana, along with their team recently celebrated 5 years at Llandilo Post Office, on the 14th of March. The local, small business has customers from Llandilo, Jordan Springs, Berkshire Park and Shanes Park. Speaking with the Jordan Springs Gazette, Jenny said the community has been very welcoming of the team from day one. “We love being a part of this close-knit family. We have grown so much in the last five years and we look forward to many more years to come,” she said. “We are so grateful and blessed to be serving such an amazing community and we want to thank everyone for the continued support and trust in us.”

A Man, a Mic, and a Dream Jordan Springs’ local Steve Head is living the dream. Growing up in the 70’s and 80’s, his love of music would lead him to dream of one day becoming a radio DJ. Today, he has done just that with his very own weekly show, The Jailhouse Rock Show on Hawkesbury Gold. “I never really watched TV when I was young. I just loved music and was always listening to the radio or recording my own cassettes for my Walkman. I even had a discussion with a family member when I was 16 and I said that I was going to be a radio DJ” reflected Steve. Many years later, Steve moved to Hornsby for work and an unexpectant opportunity arose, where he would get his start as a radio DJ with a community radio station. “Being a community station, it was a way to give back and contribute to the local community. I also got to be the Co-Station Manager at HHH FM. It was a great experience, and I learned a lot about how a radio station operates” Steve explained. Steve’s current show, The Jailhouse Rock Show is dedicated to Elvis Presley. As well as playing Elvis classics, he supports Elvis tribute artists via phone chats or in the studio. It is broadcast on Tuesday nights from 8:00pm till 11:00pm and can also be streamed online at www.hawkesburygold.com. “Thanks to streaming, the world is your oyster in radio and social media has been a huge way to promote the show. I have listeners from all over Australia as well as internationally from countries like U.S.A and Turkey” said Steve. His show is live each week and Steve receives song requests by phone, email, and social media. “The number of requests we get is off the charts for a community station. My daughter Michelina joins me sometimes too in the school
holidays and will read them out” smiled Steve. “You never know, our own radio station right here in Jordan Springs may arrive one day with the future in streaming music growing rapidly” he ended. r Steve in the studio recording his show | Image: Steve Head

Physio Dancer: When Passion and Profession Meet Dance is a passion for many young people, as the numerous dance ensembles in every primary and high school in NSW shows. However, a career in dance is another thing entirely. So being able to join a profession that lets you work in the area of your passion, is a rare gift. Alicia Cox, physiotherapist with The Healthy Body Company at Jordan Springs, is a young local woman who has loved dance from a young age. “I started dancing with Mr Gasson and the La Dance School of Ballet and later at Glenbrook Ballet Theatre and loved it from the very beginning. When I finished high school, I could not imagine doing anything but dance and was absolutely thrilled to be accepted into the prestigious program at Western Australian Academy of Arts (WAPA)” said Alicia Cox, Physiotherapist. Once at WAPA, Alicia continued to develop her dance skills, but at the same time her interest in the body and not just how it moves, but it’s mechanics and how injuries happen, began to flourish. Alicia saw physiotherapists to help her manage her own dance related injuries and saw the important role they played as part of the support team for a dancer. “When I finished my Diploma at WAPA, I could have launched a professional career as a dancer. However, I wanted a career with longevity that would still allow me to engage with dancers and others who needed help with injuries that impacted on their ability to move” Alicia explained. Alicia went back to university, this time in NSW and qualified as a Physiotherapist. She joined the team at The Healthy Body Company in Jordan Springs because she loves the culture of the business and the desire of that team to help everyone in the community to live healthy, active lives. Alicia has retained her love of all things dance, and is always interested to support dancers, and assists them to manage their injuries as well as prepointe assessments and other services that are specifically designed for them. “We are so thrilled to have such a competent Physiotherapist with a deep knowledge of and passion for dance as part of our team” said Trisha Cashmere, Managing Director of The Healthy Body Company. r Alicia Cox | Image: Jessie Horan [Inset] The team at The Healthy Body Company Jordan Springs | Image: Tamara James. The very best way to deal with eating difficulties is not to stress about it. Look at the positive. Rather than focusing on what they don’t eat, focus on what they do eat, and expand their range and variety ever so slowly. Look upon it in the spirit of adventure rather than with fear and dread. The mirror neurons in your child’s brain will pick up on your attitude and feelings. If you have anxiety about mealtimes, your child will smell the fear and respond accordingly. If they get a lot of attention for their fussy eating, they will do more of it. Fussy eaters can be extremely determined and persistent (some might say ‘stubborn’). There is a strategy recommended by Dr Thomas Phelan – the back-up meal. You give your child tiny proportions of the family meal. A teaspoon of everything, separated from each other on a small plate. The only stipulation is that they have to try what is on the plate. They can eat what they want to and leave what they want to but they have to give it a bit of a go. If they like some of it they can have more. You give your child lots of descriptive praise for what they try and eat. The child at any time is able to ask for their back-up meal. The criteria for the back-up meal is that it is quick and simple to prepare, and somewhat nutritious. It could be as simple as a peanut butter sandwich or tinned spaghetti on toast. The backup meal is always the same. You pay no attention whatsoever to your child eating their back-up meal. Slowly but surely your child will eat more of the main meal and less of the back-up meal. This can take time – months or years. Just be consistent. You can be more persistent than your child, right? When I tell people the above story, they are concerned about the child “winning”. Is parenting a battle or a race? Are our children our enemies or adversaries? What is the most positive way to approach the situation? It’s better to catch flies with honey than with vinegar. Force, yelling, and manipulation will only work for a short time and the effects on your child are not that great. Never start a war with your child over food – you will not win.

HEALTH MATTERS

You have a Slipped Disc – So what is a Disc and what does this mean? ‘Intervertebral discs’ have a hard outer connective-tissue (anulus fibrosus) and a ‘gelatinous’ interior (nucleus pulposus). At top and bottom are endplates, the transition tissues between disc and bone. Discs have several important functions. They act as: 1. Shock absorbers for the vertebral column 2. Ligaments that tie the vertebra above & below the disc together 3. Spacers between vertebra to allow appropriate nerve-exit from the spine. 4. Movement-enablers for vertebrae relative to each other allowing us to bend and twist As we age discs tissues may begin to deteriorate and weaken showing progressive signs of disc disease. This weakening may eventually lead to herniation of one (or more) discs, which we colloquially call a “slipped disc”. Disc herniation often occurs gradually but significant trauma can also lead to disc extrusion or sequestration. Disc-herniation stages are picture. If a herniated disc contacts a nerve, this may result in significant nerve compression (occlusion) and pain in the lower back and down the nerve course. Compression may also lead
to ‘radiculopathy’, i.e. pathological changes in nerve function resulting in one of several ‘neurological deficits’ including: 1. Sensory changes such as tingling, altered sensation or numbness, 2. Motor changes such as muscle weakness or reflex loss. Any/all such symptoms, often referred to as sciatica, may be experienced by patients with a slipped disc. MRIs (involving no radiation exposure) are the best scan for enabling physicians to see the soft spinal tissues unseen with conventional x-ray. Things are however a little more complex than this. A study by Luoma et. Al. (2000) showed that many patients may have both low back pain and sciatica yet have no disc bulges. A further study by Livshits in 2011 showed that degeneration of the discs alone, whether or not a bulge was present, was highly associated with lower back pain and so it may be that the chemicals of inflammation released from degenerating disc tissue become a key factor in generating lower back pain, possibly sciatica. As discussed here previously, cleaning muscles of inflammatory infiltrate while lengthening them is key to tissue healing & remediation of symptoms.

In the Christian calendar one period [known as ‘seasons’] is that named Lent. It covers 40 days that lead up to the culmination of the life and work of Jesus Christ. His trial and execution resulted in a turning point which for over two thousand years still causes people to consider and contemplate on its implications which did much to change history. Easter gives testimony to the fact that death did not destroy the work of Jesus because in his resurrection and ascension a deeper and more powerful impetus was given to the meaning of life and the universe in all its majesty and so much which goes beyond human understanding. Lent begins with what is known as Ash Wednesday when a person’s forehead is marked with ashes during the prayer, which reminds us that from dust we came and to dust we will return. For among all the certainties of life one constant remains: we are born to die! Lent is that period which is given to consider and meditate on this reality. Within the context of the life and work of Jesus the Christ, Lent directs consideration on our lifestyle, social and personal interactions, and our own quest to fully understand who we are and the meaning for our birth. We had no part in determining what nationality or even who would be our parents. From birth we grow up in the situations in which we find ourselves, but whatever we are God’s creation. So, it is good that Lent is that period in which greater contemplation and meditation is encouraged. At a personal level, what is often realised is how fragile and often confused can thought be in considering who we are as alongside our strengths are the many weaknesses that depreciate.

Chocolate Dangers at Easter Time We all know Easter is a fun time spent with family and chocolate...lots and lots of delicious chocolate! Easter is a great time for the human members of the family, but the infamous Easter egg hunt can end in tragedy for our four legged friends. Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, which when ingested by a dog or cat, causes vomiting, diarrhoea, hyperactivity, increased heart rate, restlessness, muscle twitching, increased urination, excessive panting and if left untreated can be rapidly fatal. If your dog does accidentally eat some chocolate it is vitally important that they are seen within 30 minutes to an hour by your local veterinarian. The veterinarian will give a medication to make your pet vomit, which removes most of the toxins from the body. Sometimes, your pet will be hospitalised, where intravenous fluids may be used, an enema or stomach pump may be required, and we may also need to use muscles relaxants and activated charcoal. There are a few simple precautions you can take to ensure that your pet has a safe Easter: • Hide your Easter eggs in areas which cannot be accessed by your pet. • Ensure small children do not give your pet any chocolate. • Ensure all chocolate is kept out of reach from your pets. Dogs have a good sense of smell and will find chocolate in kid’s schoolbags! • Distract your pet with their favourite treats while chocolate is around. Check out our website for more information. www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. r Happy Easter from our four legged friends! | Image: www.pixabay.com

As we prepare the April edition for print, parts of our state and our very own communities have been engulfed by severe rainfall and floods, it has been quoted in the media to be a ‘once in a century’ event. I know it comes as no surprise that the community has banded together once again with complete strangers offering accommodation, while others assist with the boarding of pets, supply of clothes, transportation, food and so many other offers of support. It makes me so proud and privileged to be a part of this wonderful community we call home. As we move through April, we hope to put this event behind us. But, like COVID, there will be plenty of work ahead in rebuilding and restoring life ‘after the floods’. Try and catch your breath, take a moment to read about all the latest happenings in Your Community News. It’s very fitting that I end with this, ‘Always help someone, you may be the only one who does’. Happy Easter, enjoy Your Community News.
