The Power of Books
The local community is abuzz with news that a new club for book lovers has recently launched. Ropes Crossing Book Club, which was formed in June last year, tripled in size last month and is in for a big year ahead. Ropes Crossing Book Club was initially started by a group of book enthusiasts, with about 10-12 members. After a call-out on social media in January, member numbers quickly grew to 34. “Our motivation to start the group began with a conversation seeking other book lovers on the Ropes Crossing Facebook page that started it all! It’s based on a shared love of reading, conversation, and good company” said Ginette Almeida of Ropes Crossing Book Club. “Whilst we do discuss books, we also talk about a lot of other things too. It’s great to get to know more like-minded people in the neighbourhood, which helps build the community feel. The meetings that we have had have been COVID-safe and, now more than ever, its vital to keep creating forums to connect with people face-to-face to know that you’re not alone” continued Ginette. The group are currently planning their first meet up for 2021, to get to know all their newest members. They will continue to read a wide selection of books, so that everyone can read something that they enjoy and try reading something new. “Last year, we read The Dry by Jane Harper and we loved it so much that we planned a movie outing when the film adaption was released recently. The movie outing was such a hit, and we’ll look to do more of those this in 2021. We’re also looking forward to doing more outings to local second-hand bookshops and op shops to find hidden gems” explained Ginette to the Jordan Springs Gazette. For more information about the group, search ‘Ropes Crossing Book Club’ on Facebook. “We look forward to welcoming local members outside of Ropes Crossing when gathering numbers are hopefully relaxed in the coming months” Ginette ended. r [L] Ropes Crossing Book Club | Image Supplied by Ginette Almeida [R] Image: www.pixabay.com

Not Once, But Twice!
Twenty years after winning division one, a Jordan Springs man has scored the coveted prize for the second time in his life, describing his Monday and Wednesday Lotto win as mind-blowing. The Sydney winner held one of the three division one winning entries in Monday and Wednesday Lotto draw 4043, drawn Wednesday 13 January 2021. Each division one winning entry scored $1,000,000. Confirming his win with an official from The Lott, the man couldn’t quite believe his good fortune. “Are you kidding me?” he began to question. “My goodness. You’re joking? “Wow. Thank you. “That sounds great! That’s unbelievable. “I’ve been playing the lottery most of my life and you probably wouldn’t believe it, but I won division one around 20 years ago! “I think it was $200,000 and that was a lot of money back then. “This is incredible. I never thought lightning would strike twice. “Wow. My goodness. My heart is running at about 300 miles an hour!” When asked how he planned to enjoy his million-dollar windfall, the Sydney dad said retirement would begin almost immediately. “I am so close to retiring so this is awesome. Absolutely awesome!” he laughed. “I won’t be working for much longer by the looks of it. I’ll be handing in my notice real soon! “This one is for the children though; I will be able to all help them out a little bit.” The winning entry was purchased at Jordan Springs Newsagency, Shop 4, Woolworths Jordan Springs, 61 – 63 Watergum Drive, Jordan Springs. r Feature Article: [Cover+Above] A big win | Image/Article: The Lott

PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith Family Practitioner E: handsheartsandminds@gmail.com Blog: https://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com/
Reflective Listening
If you search on the term “reflective listening” you will get many different ways of being a reflective listener. I find reflective listening a wonderful tool, but when I teach it to parents they say “that’s weird”. I tell them to go home and try it, and let me know how it’s going for them in a week’s time. Many parents come back and say “it really works”. For parents of adolescents they say that reflective listening has changed the relationship between them and their young person. Here is one way that I use reflective listening… Child: Jack didn’t play with me at lunchtime today. Parent: Oh, Jack didn’t play with you at lunchtime. (Same tone, same affect) Child: Nup Parent: Hmmm Child: He played soccer with Caleb instead. Parent: So, he played soccer with Caleb instead. Child: Yeah Parent: Yeah (with a big sigh) Long silence. Child: I think I’ll play soccer with Jack tomorrow. Parent: You’ve decided to play soccer with Jack tomorrow. Sounds like a plan. What do you notice about this interaction? The child solved his own problem. Notice the absence of the parent giving advice. Notice the absence of the parent asking more questions. Notice the presence of silence and space, and this is the magic of it. Our kids are so used to us giving advice and asking lots of questions that they quite often don’t talk about their stuff because they don’t want the fuss or the lecture. When you give kids lots of silence and space, they open up. Why? Because it is now emotionally safe to do so. Sometimes it takes a while for the child to get used to it, and the communications end quickly. Keep using it, they’ll get used to it. Kids are clever. They usually have some idea of how they might go about solving their problems. After a good while of reflective listening, if the child hasn’t generated his own solutions, you might want to ask “I wonder what you might do about it?” and do some more reflective listening. r

2021 brings a clean slate for many children and their families. It is a chance to start a fresh and move on from any negative experiences from the year before. Unfortunately, 2020 was such an unusual year and certain aspects will continue in the new year. How will this impact education and schooling? We are yet to fully-discover this; however, with experience comes a more preparedness and ability to navigate tricky situations with a clearer direction and course of action. Last year, children and families had a short taste of remote learning in New South Wales with some children of essential workers continuing at school in an altered learning environment. Teachers have adjusted methods of teaching, integrated further technology and initiated COVID safe procedures and processes which will carry through in schools in 2021. Children have adapted to a variety of teaching styles and different teachers whilst learning from home some almost seamlessly, and others not without anxiety and struggles leading to various learning implications. It is possible that we may face further outbreaks of COVID-19 and schooling may need to look different again, but it is still a chance for a fresh start. New classmates. New teachers. For some, a new school or heading into secondary school. 2021 is an opportunity to focus on moving forward positively in whichever way possible. One encouraging thing that we all know is that we collectively got through it all in 2020, and we will get through 2021 and whatever that brings educationally speaking. We are better equipped and have a greater sense of expecting the unexpected. All we can do is encourage our children to continue to try their best and support the teachers, families, and schools as a community in any way possible. Here’s to a great school year!

Kyan’s Big Year Ahead
This year will be extra special for the Lamb family, with 5-yearold Kyan starting school at Jordan Springs Public School. After previously undergoing brain surgery, the brave boy is ready for Kindergarten and the beginning of his education journey. “Kyan was going to start school in 2020, with all of his friends from daycare, but unfortunately was diagnosed with a brain condition called Chiari Malformation. This is a condition where part of the brain (cerebellum) pushes down into the spinal canal, through which the spinal cord runs. People with a Chiari malformation usually have it from birth, and some don’t have any symptoms, while others may have symptoms and can require surgery” said Kate Lamb, Kyan’s mum. Kyan had decompression brain surgery in 2019 at 4 years of age. “Because of this, we decided to wait that extra year to make sure surgery was a success and Kyan would be able to catch up on the learning he missed while recovering. Since having brain surgery, Kyan’s condition has improved 100% with him having absolutely none of the symptoms that he was having before. Lucky for Kyan he has a friend whom he has grown up with also starting Kindergarten at Jordan Springs Public this year, so he will have a familiar face to ease this huge but exciting step for our Chiari warrior” Kate explained. He is most looking forward to making new friends and playing games with them at big school this year. “Although surgery has helped him, Kyan still has Chiari which means being extra cautious when it comes to his head. We have had a chat with the Assistant Principal to make a specific care plan for him to receive the best possible care if he ever needed and this has helped ease my fears” she stated. So, what does Kyan want to be when he grows up and finishes school? “I want to be a police officer, a detective, and a monstertruck driver” he smiled. Best of luck Kyan and all the children starting and returning to school this year.

Nominations Open for 2021 Blacktown City Woman of the Year Do you know a passionate, dedicated, or inspiring woman who deserves recognition for their contribution to Blacktown City? Nominations are now open for the 2021 Blacktown City Woman of the Year Award. The Woman of the Year Award recognises the outstanding achievement of women within the local community through voluntary or paid work. The Award forms part of Blacktown City’s annual celebrations for International Women’s Day on 8 March. International Women’s Day is a global event which commemorates the achievements of women and highlights women’s equality worldwide. The theme for International Women’s
Day in 2021 is ‘Choose to Challenge’. Mayor of Blacktown City, Tony Bleasdale OAM, encouraged Blacktown City residents to recognise the strong, dedicated, and passionate women in the local community via a nomination to the Award. “International Women’s Day is celebrated each year to inspire women to achieve their full potential and to highlight women’s equality, and inequality, worldwide” Mayor Bleasdale said. “We adopt this annual event as an opportunity to also spotlight the achievements of many of our community-spirited women in Blacktown City”. The Award is open to women aged 16 years and over who currently live or work in the Blacktown City local government area. Nominations can be made for a woman who has made an outstanding contribution to their local community, inspired others to contribute to their local community, risen above adversity to reach their goals, consistently demonstrated exceptional and progressive leadership, mentored and inspired other women, or demonstrated leadership, innovation and creativity. Council’s Women’s Advisory Committee, including members of the community and Council, will consider nominations and select the 2021 Blacktown City Woman of the Year. To nominate for the Award or for more information visit https://www.blacktown.nsw.gov.au. Nominations close at midday on Monday, 15 February 2021. FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
In 2020, so much of the world was tested by the vicious outcomes of a natural force. COVID 19 took so many lives, endangered the well- being both physically and mentally of millions that it boggles the mind in coming to comprehend its reality. In 2021, the signs are there that it will still take a toll even although breakthrough has been made in the field of vaccination. To the Christian who firmly believes in a creator who sustains what has been created and as understanding increases knowledge of the evolution of life, the pandemic makes one to stop and seriously reflect. The question why tests philosophy and the sciences and may be best understood as we look at the evolution in the attempt to understand life. Alongside that which engenders life there is also the reality of the downside which not only depreciates but can destroy life. We are drawn to the marvels of scientific effort by so many involved in producing vaccines that have high probability of being effective that we also acknowledge the wonderful mystery of the created human mind. As a reflection on recorded history enables the conclusion to be drawn that life in all is aspects continues to evolve, particularly in causing the merging of so many differing realities, it enhances our understanding and leads to better comprehension of life itself. Within this context there exists a further dimension which lies solely within human life. That is the reality of the very constant exhibit of action that depreciates rather than enhances. The 10 Commandments are a constant reminder of that. So, it is as with the world at large and the immeasurable universe in which it exists, human behaviour gives us a clue on which to draw conclusions confident that God’s purpose in creation will be achieved.

We’ve arrived at 2021, and there’s no doubt it has arrived already with it’s own challenges. We’ve all come to terms with the limitations introduced over the past 12 months as a result of COVID. With masks forming part of our ‘everyday’ wear, sanitizer available everywhere we turn and social distancing the ‘new’ norm. Despite this, 2021 will see plenty of new beginnings, wonderful stories and chapters that continue to evolve as we continue on this journey of life. It may be a bumpy ride with hurdles and various obstacles, but rest assured, we’re in it together and we’ll get through this! Look for the beauty in every moment, capture the magic, focus on the positives. It’s our first edition of the year and we are so pleased to be back sharing wonderful local stories of true hope and inspiration! ‘Accept what is, let go of what was, and have faith in what will be’. Enjoy Your Community News.
