Spellbinding C.J Hands up if you have ever wanted to be Harry Potter? The thought of having your very own wand to cast spells is quite appealing. Local magician and entertainer C.J Winter has taken this art to new heights, handcrafting his many magic props including wands. Having recently completed a Bachelor of Arts in Fine Arts, he was keen to find ways to put his skills to practical use. “My specialty is wand-crafting. To date, I’ve made over 100 boutique wands ranging from simple designs in elegant white maple to elaborate offerings composed of exotic hardwoods, resins, precious metals, and stones” he explained. C.J draws inspiration from the magicians of yesteryear, where it was commonplace for them to be skilled craftspeople as well as performers. “As a traditional performer, I also enjoy crafting magician’s cups used in the classic ‘Cups and Balls’ routine and have created sets from materials such as coconut shell, polymer leather, steel and even neoprene sponge. “But most of all, I enjoy challenges set by my friends in the magical community. I’ve made unique creations such as a floating medieval ‘Ghost Trap’ ball, unspillable shot-glasses, levitating cards and giant steel safety pins that can magically link and unlink at will” C.J said. A wand can take anything from a few hours to a few days to make, depending on the complexity of the design and availability of materials. Polymer leather items, such as leather-finish ‘Chop Cups’ are much faster to make than traditional leatherwork and can be finished in a few days also, as opposed to the weeks that are usually needed to stretch and form real leather. For more information, search ‘C.J. Winter - Close Up Magician and Entertainer’ on Facebook. r [Top] Hand-crafted wand by C.J Winter [Above] Polymer leather cup with hand-crocheted balls by C.J Winter | Images: C.J Winter

It began as a dream over a year ago and is now a reality, with local Tracey Horey launching Sniffspace, Australia’s only directory of privately-owned, secure off-leash spaces for dogs and their owners, last month. Tracey’s motivation to create Sniffspace came from her own personal experiences with Rafferty, her Kelpie X rescue dog. “I rescued Rafferty when he was 4 months old. He had been dumped outside a country pound when he was 2 months old. He is my life and I love him to bits. We do obedience and agility, and he is great with everyone he knows, but is very wary and scared of strange dogs and people” explained Tracey to the District Gazette. “Rafferty isn’t suited to busy dog parks, but he does need to get out and about and enjoy some off-leash time. Time in different environments is hugely important to a dog’s mental health” she added. Tracey and her team would one day like to see secure Sniffspaces all over Australia. No matter where you live, travel or holiday they hope that there will be secure spaces for our fur babies to have a run in and enjoy. “We hope this gives the off-leash dogs and their owners alternatives to the sometimes-volatile environment of a dog park or having them leashed at all times at local parks (and there are now many in other states where dogs are prohibited completely now). This gives them a safer space to play, hence improving their mental health and safety. “It will provide an outlet for all those people that are now getting dogs in apartments or on much smaller blocks. We also hope to be able to provide more spaces for dog trainers and dogs and their select friends in the future with multi-dog bookings” said Tracey. For more information or to get involved, visit www.sniffspace. com.au. r

Born to Perform Local vocalist and pianist Alina Wakeling was born to perform. Taking to the stage for the first time at just 4 years of age, the accomplished musician is proving to be one of the hardest working local performers in the industry. Alina has already completed 12 years of piano and 15 years of dance training. Adding to this with further studies in musical theatre singing and music composition, she has a resume to rival any seasoned performer. “The musical exposure I had at my church, Corpus Christi Cranebrook, inspired and motivated me to start. Growing up, I used to listen to my Dad and my singing teacher, Sheridan, sing regularly at church. I was always eager to join in!” explained Alina to the District Gazette. Locally, Alina has performed at events such as Penrith Rotary Carols, Penrith Festival, Penrith Show, World Voice Day, and Penrith Relay for Life. She also regularly performs at weddings and funerals around Sydney. Some of Alina’s musical highlights in her career have included being a member of the Blue Mountains Musical Society, where she was cast and had roles in The Phantom of the Opera, West Side Story and Jesus Christ Superstar. In 2020, she performed as a soloist in ‘BMMS Online’, a live streamed musical theatre concert broadcasted to Sydney residents during the pandemic. “I love musical theatre, but I also love a good pop ballad! I was always inspired by Delta Goodrem and her influence is very apparent in the music I have composed over the years” she smiled. Away from performing, Alina splits her time teaching piano and singing. She has been a choir coach and movement teacher with the Nepean Valley Voices Children’s Choir. Whether it’s tutoring students at her private studio or at Caroline Chisholm College, she has a passion for sharing her love of music! Alina’s next challenge is to open a new teaching studio in Penrith. Neighbour Day - Connected People Connect Communities Neighbour Day is Australia’s annual celebration of community, encouraging people to connect with their neighbours. Neighbours matter (whether near, far, or online), and now, more than ever, is the time to make creative connections and to stay connected. Neighbours can help and support each other in times of need, as we have seen during the numerous challenging times over the past year. A neighbour is also no longer necessarily defined by location alone and can be someone in your street, or the wider community, your workplace, or online. Maybe in Australia, or perhaps overseas. Neighbours are those in our geographical and selected communities that show they care and perhaps offer a hand when we need it most. Traditionally celebrated on the last Sunday in March annually, the theme for Neighbour Day 2021 is ‘Every day is neighbour day’. This year, they are encouraging Australians to help break down loneliness in our communities by building meaningful and sustainable social connections with the people around them. People experience loneliness across the age and social spectrum, including young people, people living with their families, and even people surrounded by others in the workplace. For Neighbour Day 2021 they are asking everyone to get creative, reach out, and to encourage social connection. Connected people connect communities. Neighbours connect and provide support to those living next door and to those further away. We have the capacity to build communities beyond our physical locations. This year, they want you to get creative and contribute to building and sustaining the communities we all need. Now is the perfect time to organise your ideas and plan your connection opportunities. If public health advice doesn’t permit traditional gatherings, then they encourage people to get creative and find alternative ways to reach out to your neighbours. Neighbour Day shares 50 #CreativeConnections The community tips on their website, with more ideas on you social media want startstoatget your front door your creative neighbourly ideas flowing. Everything you need to help organise your Neighbour Day neighbourday.org event is now available on the neighbourday.org website. You @NeighbourDay canSunday also connect with Neighbour Day via Facebook, Instagram, 28 March 2021 or Twitter to share your neighbourhood stories /neighbourday and creative /neighbourday plans. You can download the Neighbour Day campaign sign from the Neighbour Day website for selfies and post your neighbourly pics on your favourite social media platform.

When Quirky becomes Different
Do you have a child who is different? A quirky kid? He or she does things differently to other children? When does ‘quirky’ stop being an expression of the individual and an indication that some intervention is required? Those who could, would. So if children in general are able to draw at the age of four then your four year-old child should be able to draw, even if she isn’t that keen on it. If your 6 yearold child isn’t making friends when other 6 year-olds have fit in nicely and found a group of children he can relate to, then your child is experiencing some limitations in his social and emotional development. The labels don’t help – lazy, stubborn, aggressive, naughty, bad, stupid, a typical boy/girl, etc, – they get in the way of finding out what is really happening for your child. Is it a medical problem? A physical problem? A neurodevelopmental problem? I can’t tell you the number of times a parent has spoken in a parenting group about his/her child’s difficulties and the other parents have jumped in with solutions based on what they think the diagnosis could be. Or a well-meaning relative or friend has told a parent that she thinks her child has autism because she knows someone who has autism and they have tantrums just like that. Chances are your mother-in-law, friend, neighbour, or local shopkeeper is not qualified to make that call. NOTHING beats an assessment by a qualified professional. Start with a trip to your GP and keep asking questions until you are satisfied that your child is getting what they need. Quirky is absolutely fine, but if your child is limited in one or more areas of development (fine motor, gross motor, social, emotional, intellectual) it can lead to psychological or mental health problems later in childhood or during adolescence, and it’s often much easier to get help when a child is young rather than when the behaviours have become entrenched later. r

Five Seasons Proud Springs Netball Club
for
Jordan
The Jordan Springs Netball Club are eagerly preparing for the new season ahead, which will be their fifth in the Penrith District Netball Association (PDNA) Competition. 2021 looks promising for the local club as they continue to go from strength to strength. Training for the new year begins later this month, with the competition starting on May 1st. There will be 25 teams registering for the teal and whites this season, consisting of 10 Ladies teams and 15 Junior teams with ages ranging from 6 to 17 years. “Last year was a great year for Jordan Springs Netball Club. Firstly, actually starting and then playing the entire season was a big achievement for the sport locally. We had 5 teams that played in their Grand Finals. “Our Under 11 Jack Rabbits team won their Grand Final in a nail-biting final quarter, after going through the season undefeated. We also had 3 umpires that were district badged and 1 that received her national badge, which were proud moments for the club” explained Michelle Barnes, President of Jordan Springs Netball Club. Michelle is hopeful for a positive season ahead and is looking forward to this. “Heading into our fifth season, I’m looking forward to many things. Seeing the improvement in our players and teams is encouraging. This should see more of our teams make the final series. Building up and nurturing our umpiring and coaching teams is important. Growing our community and club spirit is something I can’t wait to see” said Michelle to the Jordan Springs Gazette. With registrations now closed, the club’s teams are full. They are still seeking coaches and qualified umpires as well as sponsors. If you would like to help, you can get in touch with them by email at jsnetball@gmail.com. To follow the Jordan Springs Netball Club and their season ahead, find them on Facebook.

Beautiful Cat with 3 Kittens! On 8th January 2021 we had a beautiful stray cat brought in that was pregnant. Unfortunately, she had no microchip. We informed the pound and the other veterinary hospitals in the area of the stray cat, but we could not find an owner. We could have sent her to the pound to be rehomed, but there are already too many cats at the pound, and being pregnant, we wanted to provide a safe environment for her and the soon to be kittens. She is such a nice smoochy cat, that loves attention, so she became one of our adoption cats. She gained 0.6kg in 3 weeks and her belly was growing every day. On 1st February 2021, she passed 1 dead kitten. We elected to perform a caesarian and desex her to ensure the other kittens had the best chance of survival. She now has 3 tiny little kittens to look after. They are so cute! Mum is doing well and she spends all day feeding the 3 kittens. Such a good mum! We will be posting updates on Facebook on the kittens each week. It will be so much fun to see how much they grow each week! The mum and the 3 kittens are available to purchase through our cat adoption program. They will be wormed every week and vaccinated at 8 weeks of age. The kittens will require a 2nd vaccination 3-4 weeks after the first vaccine, then due yearly. The kittens will be desexed before finding their forever home. Please call 02 4736 2027 to enquire about the mum and the kittens for adoption. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au. r Mum and kittens at 1 week of age | Image Supplied

Digital Photo Card Trial Goes Live in Penrith
Thousands of NSW Photo Card holders who live in the Penrith area can now download a digital version of their identification through the Service NSW app. Minister for Customer Service Victor Dominello said that the Digital Driver Licence has been a resounding success and led to many customers requesting a Digital Photo Card. “This is another example of the NSW Government bolstering the Service NSW app to put customers first and make life easier for people” Mr Dominello said. “With a Digital Photo Card, as long as you have your phone, you always have your ID with you. It’s hassle free and only takes minutes to download”. The Digital Photo Card builds on the success of the Digital Driver Licence, which is now held by more than 2.4 million licence holders in NSW, representing 41 per cent of drivers. Close to 2,000 new users are adopting the technology each day, earning it a 95 per cent customer approval rating. There are more than 970,000 Digital Photo Card holders in NSW. Member for Penrith Stuart Ayres said the trial will test the functionality and effectiveness of the Digital Photo Card ahead of a state-wide roll out. “The trial will allow Photo Card holders in the trial area to use their mobile device to enter licensed venues and transact with other businesses who check ID, such as hotels, major retailers, telcos, convenience stores, tobacco retailers and pharmacies” Mr Ayres said. “The Digital Photo Card is hosted securely on the Service NSW app, which is locked with a PIN. I encourage Penrith residents to give it a go and let us know what you think”. When a customer is issued their Photo Card or updates their details, they simply refresh the app for real-time updates, without having to wait for a plastic card to arrive in the post. The Digital Photo Card remains available offline if the card holder remains logged into the Service NSW app. The following postcodes are included in the trial – 2750, 2745, 2747, 2748, 2749, 2773. r

Jordan Springs Probus Club The Club was formed under the Probus values of supporting and promoting Friendship, Fellowship and Fun in retirement. We welcome new members from Jordan Springs and surrounding suburbs. Your local Probus Club at Jordan Springs is trying to get back to some normality. Penrith Council have allowed the reopening and use of the Community Hall, all be it with some limitation on the numbers and the maintenance of social distancing. This has allowed us to recommence our monthly meetings with the inclusion of guest speakers. Our events calendar is looking a little thin, as coach hire, and locations are still subject to heavy restrictions in the numbers allowed with some destinations/attractions still not open for business. We are now back to enjoying our monthly lunches with an expanding choice of local venues. The committee continues to plan for the eventual lifting/relaxing of restrictions and the return to a more normal monthly agenda. This ensures members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance, developing new interests, and staying active. Future planned events for the coming twelve months will include Berima Surveyor General Inn for lunch and day trip, Manly train and ferry for lunch, Mudgee Getaway Cottages (4 nights), Bundeena Ferry and lunch, Camden Historic Tour (coach) and planning is continuing towards an interstate trip. The Jordan Springs Probus Club normally meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, at 9:30am for a 10:00am start. Visitors are most welcome. FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
St David’s exists to worship the Trinity. What is meant by this? Essentially, it is to worship God within the context of a particular understanding. As such, it is faith in an event and a person that has come down through the centuries in the writings enshrined in the New Testament found in the Bible. The New Testament is not a textbook but records initial responses to the event and person. Theologically it is expressed in Hebraic rather than Greek thinking. It is the writer St Paul who, in his recorded letters, we find a first rate and systematic thinker whose argument, although sometimes complicated, provides a strong and coherent and carefully articulated philosophy of the event and person. One needs to take time to fully appreciate St Paul’s intellectual exploration of the life and death of Jesus as found in his letters to the people living in ancient Colossia and Ephesus as he attempts to express his understanding that God was in Jesus the Christ and that indeed the Word became human. A sacred understanding that once accepted provides a powerful insight and ongoing growth as we progress from birth to our own death. Fundamental to this understanding is experience rather than thought in the recognition that God is Spirit immanent in and experienced by his created. That immanence and experience is understood within the Trinitarian concept the Holy Spirit of God and Father of Jesus Christ. It is held that in his life and death Jesus fully shows the immanent and transcendent God and his purpose for creation, including the human species of that creation. Thus, while the Bible expounds the concept of one God; even a casual glance at the writings of its various authors in the New Testament shows that he is spoken of in distinct ways and as such the concept of the Trinity is the normative foundation for worship.

Here we are into March already, as we wave goodbye to Summer and welcome Autumn. The warmer weather will slowly be replaced with cooler temperatures and the once lush foliage of our gardens and trees will change. As we start to adjust to the new normal, there is some promising news with vaccines for COVID-19 soon to be rolled out in Australia. Many of us have now returned to our offices as zoom meetings are replaced by face-to-face meetings. There is a strong sense of community and positivity everywhere you go as things begin to look up once again for us all. This month we meet some truly amazing people with stories about our local heroes. They are people who go above and beyond the call of duty, enriching our lives and communities. ‘Fill your life with experiences, not things. Have stories to tell, not stuff to show’. Enjoy Your Community News.
