Coby, Living the Dream! Twelve-year-old local golfing talent Coby Carruthers from Jordan Springs recently received some great news, after being accepted into the Western Sydney Academy of Sport Golf Program. The Western Sydney Academy of Sport do not normally accept juniors until they are the age of 13 in their Golf Program, but have made an exception for Coby. Coby’s selection in the Golf Program was announced through a letter, which read ‘After consultation with Jack Newton Junior Golf and Asef Haddad (Head coach of the WSAS golf program), I would like to congratulate you on being invited into the 2017 / 2018 WSAS Golf Program’ from Steve Hewson, the Athlete Program Manager at the Western Sydney Academy of Sport. Leonay Golf Club Captain Ross Butcher said, “During the pennants season in 2016, Coby managed to go through the rounds and the semi-final of the Encourage Shield without losing a match”. “The Golf Committee for some time have been looking at a way of recognising his achievement. We recently received an invitation from Golf NSW, inviting us to nominate one junior to represent Leonay at the Junior Pro-Am on the 15th November, the day before the NSW Open at Twin Creeks”. “The Leonay Golf Club Committee invited Coby to represent the club and he has accepted the opportunity with open arms”.

Nathan’s Journey 12-year-old Nathan Flynn from Jordan Springs, was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes shortly before Christmas in December 2012 at the age of 8. Whilst adjusting to life as a Diabetic, Nathan made the decision that he would like to raise money for charity, increasing awareness and to hopefully one day find a cure for Type 1 Diabetes. Since being diagnosed, Nathan has raised more than $3,000 for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF). His latest campaign has seen him raise $1,100.20, with a goal of reaching $2,000. Nathan will participate in the JDRF One Walk next month at Wilson Park in Wentworth Falls. The charity walk will be on his 13th birthday and he thought it would be a great idea to get all his family and friends together to raise money for a charity close to his heart. Nathan has selected his team name as ‘Nathan’s Chocolate Montes’, after his favourite biscuit. If you would like to donate to JDRF Australia and, in particular ‘Nathan’s Chocolate Montes’, please go to https://give. everydayhero.com/au/nath-s-chocolate-montes. Nathan Flynn | Image Supplied

FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
Australia has entered into a postal voting system to determine the attitude of the population on the question of same sex marriage. The outcome as such is based upon the concept that in a democracy, people can exercise their own articular convictions. As an Anglican priest with particular obligations and realising that within Christian Churches there is a variety of response to the acceptance or non acceptance of ‘gay’ marriage, care must be taken with the freedom of choice in life that we have. Freedom comes with parameters such as don’t lie, don’t steal, don’t murder, don’t commit adultery etc in order that the common good of society can be sustained. So it is with marriage: two people come together with the gift of continuing the human race. As such sodomy and lesbianism does not result in the birth of children and marriage through history is the coming together of man and women with one of the joyous consequences of that union being children. The religious dimension could be added, but society at large to many intents and purposes, depreciates this dimension. This is the conviction that marriage is greatly enhanced and strengthened when it is lived “In Christ” and to the standard he established. Many object to the teaching of Saint Paul who calls for obedience by the wife to her husband. Much needless banter is engendered by both sides in the argument when it is forgotten that the word ‘obey’ in its original translation means ‘to hear’. In marriage both the husband and the wife will find strength if they ‘hear’ each other in given situations.
Same sex relations have existed since time immemorial and the psychological / physical interactions can be just as intense as those found in heterosexual relations. This can be for the good or very destructive. (Consider the amount of abuse that exists in marriage situations). Same sex relations engenders the question for those who believe that Jesus is the Christ, is the conscious clear before God and that the behaviour can be justified? In leaving the answer to the individual it allows the exercise of freedom of consciousness which however is tempered by ‘hearing’ what God in Christ expects. (So it is when administering the Sacrament of Communion, it is always taken as a given that the worshipper who does so has a clear conscience regarding what they do and say). Partners live together: many have proved to be long lasting. That is accepted but true marriage, between man and women, has an historic obligation for the continuation of the human race. As such marriage is sacred: consider for example the emotions of a mother nursing her newborn child. Thus as such I find it difficult to accept the argument for a ‘yes’ vote. Rev John Hebblewhite

Local Mumpreneurs Find Niche in Market
They say that necessity is the mother of invention and that certainly holds true for local mumpreneurs Kylie Marshall and Kasey Page, co-founders of Lille & Capri backpacks. They are just starting their third season of successfully marketing and selling their very popular daypacks, very useful for lugging around all the things that tiny humans need. The idea grew from their own experiences of motherhood, when they noticed a lack in the market for bags versatile enough to hold a days’ worth of food, nappies and clothing for babies and toddlers. Kylie describes how her inspiration came from when she was returning to work after her maternity leave. On her first week back dealing with mum guilt and working guilt, she accidentally left her lunch cooler at home. “That set me on a mission to find
an ideal all in one bag that grew with our family” said Kylie. Kylie and Kasey teamed up and set out to design an all in one insulated bag that would serve as both a lunch cooler bag and a back pack. They named their business ‘Lillie & Capri’ after their daughters. The pair soon realised how well they worked as a team. When one has other commitments or sick kids the other picks up the slack. “We are also surrounded by a small army of helpers that help out and that’s why we are able to attend expos, markets and events” Kylie added. They have improved their product over time and feel that this season’s size and style are the most ideal yet. It’s amazing what a couple of mothers of invention can do. WATER SAFETY

requiring hospitalisation in 2016/17. Many of these people will require long term medical assistance. Royal Life Saving has developed a home pool safety checklist home owners can use to minimise the risks. You can find the checklist at: www.royallifesaving.com.au/families/at-home/ home-pool-safety/home-pool-safety-checklist.
Swimming and Water Safety The Royal Lifesaving National Drowning Report was released last month, and unfortunately the news is not good. 291 people died as a result of drowning in Australia in the 2016/17 financial year - a 3% increase on the 282 drowning deaths in the previous period. 32% drowning deaths occurred in NSW, the highest state percentage nationwide. Extremely concerning is the fact that drowning in children under 5 increased last year, with 29 children aged 0-4 years drowning, a 38% increase on the previous year. Greg Hunt MP, Minister for Health said “Australians love the water, it’s an important part of our culture. This is a sobering reminder to always actively supervise children around water, for people young and old to learn to swim and survive, to increase life jacket use, reduce alcohol consumption around water and to always respect the river”. Justin Scarr, Royal Life Saving CEO said “Kids and families love pools, but they can pose a significant drowning risk to toddlers. Royal Life Saving urges pool owners to actively supervise young children around water and check that the pool fence and gate is in good working order." The report found there were 12 drowning deaths in children aged 5-14 years. Justin Scarr said “Though many Australian children swim well, we still find too many kids can’t swim at all and have limited water safety knowledge.” The 2017 report is the first to examine the impact of both fatal and non-fatal drowning, with Royal Life Saving estimating that there were an additional 685 non-fatal drowning incidents

Journal Every Day – It’s Good For You Have you ever thought about writing a journal? I’ve written a journal since I was 14 years old. My first journal had a lock on it, with the tiniest key to open it. I wrote everything in my diary. Things like what happened that day, what boys I liked, what music I liked and how I felt about life. When I read back over my journal all my memories come flooding back and I remember being a teenager was tough. It was a highly emotive time. I was a great poet too. Journaling has helped me through some really tumultuous times. Journaling Is Fantastic For Your Mental Health When you feel overwhelmed or feeling confused, write in your journal, you’ll notice that your thoughts become clear and you can go on with your life. Tips For Journaling 1. Buy a journal that lifts your spirit 2. Have a pen that brings you joy and is a pleasure to write with 3. Set time aside each day to write your thoughts down
4.
Don’t edit yourself, write as the thoughts come to you. It doesn’t matter if you spell words incorrectly or get your thoughts muddled up. It’s all a part of the process 5. When you finish writing close your journal and feel the difference Benefits 1. Writing your thoughts down gets them out of your head and they feel like they’ve been dealt with 2. Clarity of issues 3. Memory keeper 4. Family history keeper 5. You can see patterns of how you deal with issues or maybe you’ve been down this path before, so when you read your journal you can see solutions for this time 6. It’s a safe place for every emotion and thought, there is no fear of judgment You can track how far you’ve come and how much you’ve grown I still write a journal every day. Enjoy your journaling. LARGE RANGE IN STORE CALL US NOW The Jordan Springs Netball Club have completed a successful inaugural first season, with many highlights for the local club including eleven teams participating, five of their umpires receiving their district badges and one senior team (Jethawks) making it to the Finals. Club President, Michelle Barnes was happy with the season and said to the Jordan Springs Gazette, “Having had previous experience with starting and running a netball club, I knew the things that we needed to concentrate on and when. I hope that I have passed on some of that knowledge to my fellow executive members. It has been a busy but rewarding year. Nurturing all club members to grow and improve whether they are a player, umpire or coach, is what I think a great club is all about. And I believe that we are definitely heading in that direction”. The Club would like to thank not only the Jordan Springs community that helped them get started, but also the community in our neighbouring suburbs. “The support has been fantastic. We secured some amazing sponsors this year. We hope to have them on board again next year, but are always looking for more. Sponsorship packages start from $250 if any local businesses would like to get involved next year” explained Michelle. The Jordan Springs Netball Club have already had numerous enquiries from individuals and teams wanting to join them next season and anticipate a gain of 5 to 10 teams. With a growth in teams, they will need to find more coaches and umpires. They welcome anyone that would like to volunteer for either of these roles. “I would like to thank the rest of the Executive team, Alisia McWhirter, Tamara Cooper, Sally Lee, Rebecca Weston and Shannon Hunt. Without these ladies help and input we would not be in the position we are today. I would also like to thank the Executive members of PDNA (in particular Jan Jackson) for their assistance in getting the club started, our coaches, managers, umpires, parents and especially our players. Thank you one and all for a fantastic first year” ended Michelle. How Do We Encourage Children To Take Responsibility For Their Own Actions? It’s an issue that comes up frequently in the work I do with families. It’s particularly tricky because some of our leaders (ie, politicians) are not very good at taking responsibility for what they do or say. Blame is a pattern that is set in childhood and can become a lifelong problem in relationships and interactions with other people (school, community, work). When we don’t accept responsibility for ourselves, we can develop a victim mentality (passive), or become too controlling (aggressive). Here are a few things we can do… Be a good role model. Apologise when you have made a mistake. Apologise for your part in any misunderstanding or disagreement. Own your own emotions. Instead of saying “you make me angry”, say “I feel angry when …”. Don’t blame others for how you feel or for what you do. Understand that blame is a dead-end street. It stops you from seeing other possibilities. Be a calm and approachable parent. Parents who feel that they must punish their child for every mistake can create an environment where the child is too fearful to tell the truth. Sometimes the best life lessons are those that have logical consequences. Encourage children to be objective. When problem solving with your children, support them to state the problem in an objective way. Instead of saying “he isn’t following the rules” (blame) she could say “we are having trouble agreeing on the rules”. It’s a subtle change but an important one. Guide your child to review the situation. Ask your child “what went well?”, “what could you do different next time?”, and “what did you learn from this situation?”. Lectures are rarely effective. The best solutions are the ones that the child comes up with. Encourage your child to apologise for his/her part in the situation. Humility is a good value for children to learn. Relationship repair is also a good skill for humans to practice. What skills do you want your child to take with him/her into adulthood? Accepting responsibility develops into competence because children are more likely to learn from their mistakes, develop an understanding of cause and effect, and grow in their confidence to manage tricky situations.

Coby also recently won the Junior Monthly Medal at the Leonay Golf Club. He has represented St Dominic’s College in the MCS Senior School Golf Championships and won the Under 12 division. He came fourth at the South Coast Junior Masters in the Under 13 nett division at Catalina Country Club in Batemans Bay. Coby also played in the Stonecutters Ridge Junior Open last month. “It’s nonstop golf for him. He’s living the dream” said Andrew Carruthers, Coby’s father.
Nepean NICU Charity Night Local mother and daughter, Neridah James and Dayna James-Gazi, are grateful for the expertise and dedication of doctors and nurses at the Nepean Hospital Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). When Dayna was born, she suffered with severe lung aspirations and heart complications. She was put into a medically induced coma and wired up to tubes from her airways, arms, legs, head, lungs and feet - which her mother Neridah understandably found very overwhelming to see. Dayna remained in a coma for a month and Neridah was informed that there was no guarantee that her newborn daughter would survive. Now, twenty-one years later, you would not be able to tell that Dayna was born as a critically ill baby. She is a healthy young woman who enjoys performing in local musical theatre and successfully travelling around Sydney as a singer/songwriter with her duo band ‘Azura’. Neridah and Dayna are holding a fundraising evening for the Nepean Hospital NICU to raise much needed funds for equipment and medical supplies necessary for treating and saving the lives of premature babies and babies born with medical complications. With the support of NNICUPS, (Nepean Neonatal Intensive Care Parents Support) they are hoping to raise funds as a way of saying thank you and to ‘give back’ to the Nepean NICU for the amazing job they did in saving Dayna’s life. The event will be held on Saturday, 21st October at the Henry Sports Club, Henry Lawson Ave, Werrington County, starting at 7.00pm. The event is open to the public. Tickets are $25.00, which includes finger foods, live entertainment, raffles, games and lots of wonderful prizes. Dayna and her musician friends will be performing on the night with some great music to sing along with or dance the night away. Tickets can be purchased online through Try Booking ‘Nepean NICU Charity Night’ or you can pay at the door. This will be a great night out for a wonderful cause. Any businesses who would like to donate prizes/funds are very welcome and will be much appreciated! For more information, please contact neridahj@hotmail.com. Bold Jack Donahue
with Lisa Finn-Powell
You never know what lurks in the bush. Or, what used to. It seems that Llandilo has a connection with the most notorious bushranger of the 1820s, Jack Donahue. Donahue (sometimes spelled Donohoe) was a bushranger from 1825 until he was killed at Bringelly in 1830 at just 26 years of age. He was an orphan, born in Dublin in 1804, became a pick-pocket and a burglar and was transported to Australia in 1825 after being convicted of ‘intent to commit a felony’. He joined forces with two men named Kilroy and Smith and the trio robbed wealthy landowners until caught and sentenced to death, but clever Donohoe managed to escape his jailers. For a time, he evaded capture, roaming the bush with his gang the Wild Colonial Boys. They raided settlements from Bathurst to Yass and the Hunter region to the Illawarra. One of the places he hid out was right here in Llandilo. A local resident, Toby Ryan, told the story of how he had ‘boiled the billy’ with Donahue, when Ryan was a teenager looking out for cattle near Llandilo. “Donahue was the most insignificant looking creature imaginable, and it seemed strange that such as he was able to keep a country in terror for eight years. He was attired in a velveteen coat and vest, cabbage tree hat, moleskin trousers, and a blue nankeen shirt, with a heart worked on the breast in white cotton”. A bounty was put on his head starting at £20, then went to £200 (about $30,000 in today’s money). His luck ran out in 1830. A play and several ballads were written about him. A passage from ‘The Wild Colonial Boy’ that immortalised Donahue, describes his famous words before he was fatally wounded: Jack pulled two pistols from his belt and he proudly waved them high, “I’ll fight, but not surrender” said the wild colonial boy. Authorities tried to ban the ballad, which has now been sung by generations and become part of Australia’s folklore about a bushranger who once sought refuge in Llandilo. National Veterinary Nurse’s Day On Friday 13th October 2017 we plan to celebrate National Veterinary Nurse’s Day at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. It is great to acknowledge the hard work and efforts of our Veterinary Nurses. The nurses do a lot of work behind the scenes that you do not see or hear about. The nurses monitor the patients whilst under general anaesthetic, medicate animals whilst in hospital, answer enquiries, clean the hospital, and ensure the smooth running of the Veterinary hospital. Without the Veterinary Nurses, we would not be able to do our job as a Veterinarian. We plan to celebrate by having a long lunch with enough food to feed an army. We have 8 nurses at the hospital, and I hope you get to know them as you come and visit our hospital.
Renai Lewis – Practice Manager Renai has grown up in the Penrith area and has seen many changes over the years. Renai joined the team in August 2014 where she was warmly welcomed by all. Renai has 3 furbabies including: Tasha (Labrador x Staffy), Ally (Golden Labrador) and Cooper (a naughty young learning Labrador). Renai adores her pets and spends every spare minute with them, when she is not busy being a wife and mum to 4 adult children.
Karen Smith - Senior Nurse Karen has previously worked for a number of years with Camille and Shelly as a Veterinary Nurse Manager at a previous Veterinary clinic. Karen is excited to join the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in March 2017. Karen had a long Veterinary Nurse career, before taking time away to start a family. Karen has a passion for dog behaviour and dog training. Karen successfully ran Puppy Preschool and Dog Training in the Southern Highlands. Karen lives in the Southern Highlands with her daughter and young whippet Toby.
Kirsti Lane After 20 years of Veterinary Nursing, Kirsti went back to TAFE to update her qualifications. Kirsti graduated from Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV (again) in June 2016. Kirsti enjoyed the study and found that the basics had not changed, but technology had certainly advanced. Kirsti enjoys spending her time off with her daughter and husband (and her animals of course) camping, bushwalking and trying to keep fit! They have 3 dogs (Roxy, Rory and Crumbs), 2 cats (Ivory Grace and William Wallace), 3 fish, 2 birds and several hermit crabs!
Rachel Kent Rachel graduated as a Veterinary Nurse in December 2012 at Richmond TAFE. She enjoys spending time with her friends and family when she is not at work. Rachel has a much loved Labrador Molly, and Jinx the cat. Rachel is currently studying the Certificate IV in Companion Animal Services at the Delta Institute, which is an animal behaviour and training course. Rachel began teaching the Puppy Preschool at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in December 2015. Rachel is enjoying the study and the hands on experience with Puppy Preschool.
Jessica Hollman Jessica completed TAFE work experience with us and joined our team in Jan 2015 as a kennel hand. Jessica completed the Veterinary Nursing Certificate IV in July 2016. Jessica has had many different kinds of animals in her lifetime currently owning her river turtle Sheldon, a blue tongue Olly, her cockatiel Toggle, many different fish and a Norwegian Elkhound named Tahoe. Jessica loves working at Orchard Hills and is looking forward to working towards her dream job as a Veterinarian.
Carly Hopkins Carly has been Veterinary Nursing since 2002, completing her studies in 2006. Carly started working at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in 2010 and left for maternity leave in 2011. After 5 years as a stay at home mum, Carly is very excited to be back working with the team. Carly has 3 fur babies, Jessie a 13 year old German Shepherd, Hemi a 7 year old BullTerrier and Dixie a 1 year old Swiss Shepherd. In her spare time, Carly loves spending time with her family, going to the beach, going to concerts and walking her fur babies.
Sophie Mead Sophie has been completing her TAFE work experience with us for her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing since June 2016, and joined our team in October 2016 as a Kennel Hand. As well as studying to become a Veterinary Nurse, Sophie is currently completing her High School Certificate, in the hopes to be accepted to study Veterinary Science in the coming years at university. Sophie has owned a variety of pets throughout her life but has always had a particular fondness for the cats in the family. At the moment, Sophie has 2 dogs (Teddy and Trixie), as well as her 3 very spoiled cats (Angus, Casper and Tallulah). Orchard Hills has become a second home to Sophie, and she loves being able to see the smiling faces of colleagues, clients, and patients alike.
Chelsea Burcher Chelsea is currently completing her Certificate IV in Veterinary Nursing at Richmond TAFE. She started her work placement at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital in January 2017 and joined our team in August 2017 as a Kennel Hand. Chelsea has always wanted to work with animals since a young age and has one dog, Meg an 8 year old Jack Russell Terrier. Chelsea loves working at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital and being part of the team. She is excited to see what the future holds. Please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. Call 4736 2027 to make an appointment. Check us out on Facebook and online at www.orchardhillsvet.com.au.

Here we are at the tail end of the year, with less than 90 days until Christmas (yes! I said it).... we start to see plenty of local and wonderful festivities being held. This month we cover off all the important topics; from spectacular sporting champions to amazing mumpreneurs; banding together for a good cause and children taking responsibility for their own actions. On page 6, Julie shares some alarming statistics about drowning's; highlighting a very pivotal message of water safety for young, old and all in between. I am thoroughly enjoying our newest column 'Looking Back with Lisa' (page 9) as we take a walk down memory lane each month; this month we explore the history behind a notorious and well known Bush Rager of times gone by. Take a read, you might just learn something new about your very own backyard! Everything is either an opportunity to grow, or an obstacle to keep you from growing. The best part is, you get to choose! (Dr. Wayne Dyer) Enjoy your Community News.
