The Pride of Jordan Springs Jordan Springs Cricket Club have successfully completed their first season in the Nepean District Cricket Association (NDCA) Competition, and the new club is certainly on the way up. There were an impressive 117 registrations last season, which saw the Under 10’s White team make the semi-finals, finishing second whilst the Under 10’s Black team finished fifth. “We were happy with our first year in the competition. The support we got from the local community with players, coaches, sponsors, volunteers and families was amazing” said Sunil Chhabra, Founder of Jordan Springs Cricket Club. The club have continued to play in the off season, fielding 97 players across 6 teams in the Seniors Winter League. With registrations for the 2020/2021 season now underway, the rapid growth of the club will see four teams represent 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th Grade in the Seniors Competition and
three teams (two in Under 11’s, one in Under 10’s) in the Junior Competition. They are still hoping for more players for the new season and welcome any Juniors or Seniors of all ages and grades wanting to play for the club. “We are looking forward to the new competition and the Summer ahead. This year, we will have more teams, new uniforms and we expect more sponsors with the growth of the club. With the new cricket pitch under construction in Jordan Springs, we anticipate that to be ready in time for the 2020/2021 season. There are exciting times ahead” said Sunil. If you would like more information about Jordan Springs Cricket Club, including registrations for the new season, find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/jordanspringscricketclub/ or visit their website at www.jordanspringscricketclub.com.au. r

Community Garden Thrives In just under a year, the Ropes Crossing Community Garden has continued to thrive. With plans to expand soon, the much-loved local project has brought together residents of all ages to promote health and sustainability. The Garden, located at Ropes Crossing Community Hub, now has a regular group of just over a dozen helpers who volunteer their time to help with maintaining the 3 garden beds. With Winter now behind us, the garden yielded a range of vegetables including cabbages, broccoli, spring onions and bok choy. The group will next be planting tomatoes and passionfruit vines in Spring. “The Community Garden is going really well. We have a group of regular volunteers of varying ages who are dedicated and have a genuine interest in growing our own fruit and vegetables” said Julian Munford, Ropes Crossing Community Garden Co-Ordinator. The group have been working together with Blacktown City Council to expand the garden beyond its current site and size in the future. “Our plans to expand have been slowed and postponed due to COVID. Our vision is to move the garden to the other side of the fence, where it currently is, and to increase the size to include 10-15 garden beds, tool shed and a seated area” explained Julian. “It truly is a garden for everyone. We have volunteers from school children to retirees. The beds are also raised, which allows greater access for people of all abilities. It’s a nice distraction with everything that is going on in the world right now” he added. Members are currently meeting regularly online on Facebook, until it is safe to meet face to face due to the current pandemic. If you would like more information or would like to get involved with the project, search ‘Ropes Crossing Community Garden’ on Facebook. v Our local garden | Image: Julian Munford

Helping Families Through Fitness The current pandemic has made an impact on the lives of many families in the community. With people losing their jobs and unemployment rising, the family budget is stretched. Ropes Crossing resident Lawrence Tauasa has created a local initiative to help with this. Lawrence has formed the group #training4milknbread, where members join him for boxing exercise and training four days a week (Monday to Thursday) at 6:00am at the basketball courts at Ropes Crossing. The cost of $10 to participate goes back directly to the community in the form of groceries to assist families in need. “I work for the Department of Education. I’ve spoken to a lot of students whose parents have sadly lost their jobs due to the pandemic. We wanted to help give back to families and to ease their financial burden during this time” explained Lawrence to the Jordan Springs Gazette. Through exercising and talking to the community, Lawrence and his team identify families that they can help. The money that is raised from the weekly training sessions is used to purchase grocery items such as bread, milk, cereal, eggs, fruit, vegetables, and toiletries. These items are then distributed to those in need. The group is an avenue where participants can support one another through mental health. It has also helped with students’ and their behaviour, allowing them to focus on health and fitness. “Our goal is to bring everyone together, promote fitness and wellbeing and provide relief for people where possible. You don’t need to pay to participate and you can just turn up” said Lawrence. For now, the group will concentrate on holding the training sessions in the local area and may have plans to expand. “Food is a doorway. It opens doors, creates discussions and people bond. If this can take some of the stress and worry away for them, it’s a good thing” Lawrence ended. If you would like more information about the group, search the hashtag #training4milknbread on social media. r Feature Article: [Cover] Group members at one of the training sessions [Above] Delivering food hampers to the community | Images: Lawrence Tauasa

Is it Time for a Family Review?
First Sunday in September The Changing Face of Education Due to the Pandemic
It is a good idea every now and again to take a look at your family and review what has been, and where you would like to focus in the future. This helps you to figure out what is truly important in the life of your family, so you can do more of it. The following questions may help you to do that. Gather around and have a discussion - share your thoughts, feelings, and ideas. AS A FAMILY… • We would like to visit… • We have fun when we… • Our weaknesses are… • Our favourite family memories are… • We show appreciation for each other by… • We like the same movies, books, and music… • Places in the community we like to go to… • We are good at… • What we argue about the most… • What I tell others about my family… • The unique things we have in common… • Three goals for our future as a family… As part of any review, you have to be prepared for some hard truths. Be prepared to listen and acknowledge. It’s not about blame, it’s just about figuring out what you are doing well and what you can do better as a family. r

It is unquestionably a massive time of uncertainty in the world right now. It is not often in Australia that the education system gets a shake-up, but that is exactly what is happening due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Many schools in New South Wales have been thrust into the world of online learning and the technological challenges that ensue. Staff have had to adapt and learn to use unfamiliar programs and students have, at times, struggled with access and developing the skills necessary to access the curriculum via this platform. The pandemic has forced schools to re-evaluate the core values of education and review what is being taught. This is evident in the announcement by the NSW Education Standards Authority that school sectors will have the authority to decide which syllabus outcomes and content they teach and assess for Kindergarten to Year 10 in 2020. This means that schools will have free reign to determine which parts of the curriculum are most important in their local contexts and to only teach and report on those outcomes. For a system which is often described as having a crowded curriculum, this could actually be a silver lining within this whole crisis. For years, teachers have been expressing their concerns that the basics of education are becoming lost within a curriculum full of ‘extras’, a problem which has resulted in many students missing out on a solid basic foundation to learning due to rushing through content. It is understandable that many parents are fearful that their children are missing out on a quality education due to online learning, learning from home and the educational program not addressing all outcomes and content of the syllabuses. Could this just be the shake-up the system needs in our post-modern globalised society? We are about to find out.

Happy Fathers Day
Happy Fathers Day Enjoy the day spoiling your Dad or being with your Dad or thinking of your Dad. You will have to think of something creative to do to celebrate Fathers Day due to the Coronavirus crisis!
Contactless Consultations Due To Coronavirus
Due to the Coronavirus crisis, we are still performing contactless consults, with the nurse bringing the pet into the hospital and the client waiting in the car. The veterinarians are calling the client to discuss any health issues and to discuss the treatment plans. The government restrictions are easing, however, as we work so closely together inside the hospital, we cannot be more than 1.5m apart from each other and if one of our staff becomes sick, then we will all become sick and we will have to close the business for 2 weeks or more. We have come so far, and we would hate to go backwards. We cannot wait for the Coronavirus crisis to be over, but it is looking like we have to create a new normal. Take Part in Creating our Magnetic Places 2020 Projects Penrith City Council’s 2020 Magnetic Places projects have been selected and they now need your help to bring them to life! Council is inviting local residents to take part in the creation of five of the selected projects. In 2020, Magnetic Places has been reimagined to support innovative alternatives to in-person participation in response to COVID-19 restrictions. The projects will help bring residents together, in new ways, to transform how people see and feel about where they live. Penrith Mayor Ross Fowler OAM said the Magnetic Places grants program has produced over 93 creative community projects in 12 years that have transformed local places in some of Penrith’s oldest established areas. “This year, we received a great response to our application process and we’re now excited to provide our residents with unique opportunities to engage with the arts” Cr Fowler said. The projects inviting resident contributions are: • Dear Tree by Rosie Ertler – Got a favourite tree? Or maybe not. Use your phone to audio record your thoughts and contribute to an online listening experience to help others connect with nature. Open to people in: Kingswood. • Our Symphony by Luke Hespanhol – Make it move! Create sounds online that will feed into an audio-visual artwork. Algorithms will re-mix the sounds and set off coloured lights which will be displayed in the St Marys’ town centre. Open to people in: Cambridge Park, Colyton, Cranebrook, Kingswood, Kingswood Park, Llandilo, Londonderry, North
FAITH – ST DAVIDS CHURCH LLANDILO Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Hebblewhite A: Lot 257A Seventh Ave, Llandilo P: 4736 3592 Service Times: 10am each Sunday, with additional services held: 2pm on the Third Sunday + 8am on the Fourth Sunday
St David’s usually has a service each year to celebrate its opening in July 1899, but due to the current restrictions due to the pandemic the celebration could not happen. Since 1899, St David’s has continued to be a place of worship. Looking back, it is sad to note that during this period the Boer War, World War 1, World War 2 and a continuation of wars such as Vietnam, the Great Depression, various devastating bushfires and drought have always been to the front for the congregation. But there is much to be thankful of, such as the church continuing to function on a voluntary basis, baptisms, marriages, and funerals over the years which have benefited from that activity. Since 2006 when the church and grounds were fully restored due to the generosity of many people, a valuable archive of items and Bibles and books of worship is developing. The archive room is dedicated to Herb Luxford (1900-1996), a champion woodsman in competitions at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, who was a leading church warden for fifty-seven years. What are some of the factors that have ensured this continuity? Surely it is the acceptance that the Holy Communion enables the continuation of sharing in the passion and resurrection of Jesus the Christ. It is in this sharing that we learn the meaning of life and look forward to its completion and fulfilment in the purposes of the Creator. That is why in everyday living, prayer is a discipline in that it is directed through a person in history who by his life and work, challenges us to answer the question: “Who do you think I am?”. It’s important to note that it is not an appeal to a book or a code of ethics.
St Marys, Oxley Park, St Marys, Werrington and Penrith suburb. • REConnection by XYZ Productions - Got a snapshot from your time in isolation? Use Instagram to contribute to a montage of images that will be mapped and projected onto a spaceship. Open to people in: Cambridge Park, Colyton, Cranebrook, Kingswood, Kingswood Park, Llandilo, Londonderry, North St Marys, Oxley Park, St Marys, Werrington and Penrith suburb. • Postcards from Home by Fusion Western Sydney Remember ‘snail mail’? Use special postcards to write, draw or scrapbook your reflections on life in this moment for others to be inspired by. Open to people in: Kingswood Park, North St Marys, St Marys. • A Cup across the Fence_Clay Symphony by Varuni Kanagasundaram - Love a cuppa and a chat? Use supplied chai cups to share a hot bevvy with a mate over the fence and then record the sound of smashing them afterwards! Open to people in: Cranebrook, Kingswood, Werrington and Penrith suburb. Residents can register their interest to help create the projects from now until Monday 7 September 2020. The Magnetic Places 2020 completed projects will be officially unveiled in October. At this time, everyone will be invited to engage with the projects either online or outdoors with social distancing measures in place. For more information, visit the Magnetic Places page on Penrith City Council’s website.

@
Jordan Springs Probus Club The Tuesday lunch for August was held at the Peachtree Hotel in North Penrith. A group of 20 members gathered for an enjoyable lunch and general catch-up, social distancing permitting. We are hopeful of Covid conditions not worsening and allowing for a September lunch at Hogs Breath Penrith. At the time of writing, we are still on track for the recommencement of our regular monthly meetings in August, with a planned date of Tuesday 25th. Our major challenge will be re-establishing the featured speakers for the remainder of the year. The committee continues to plan for the eventual lifting/ relaxing of restrictions and the return to a more normal monthly agenda. This ensures members can look forward to an exciting program featuring interesting guest speakers, monthly meetings, the opportunity to travel locally or around the world and enjoy exclusive discounts through the Probus Member Benefits Scheme including access to exclusive Probus Travel Insurance, developing new interests and staying active. Future planned events for the coming twelve months will include Watsons Bay for lunch, Mudgee Getaway Cottages (4 nights), Bundeena Ferry and lunch, Camden Historic Tour (coach) and planning is continuing towards an interstate trip. The Jordan Springs Probus Club normally meets at the Jordan Springs Community Hub on the 4th Tuesday of every month, at 9:30 for a 10:00am start. Last month in this very column, I asked ‘August’ to be kind. In turn, it was a very sombre month. If you’re anything like me, I watched the news daily to keep abreast of the COVID-19 developments in both NSW and across other states. The message of mask wearing was and remains to be a consistent message. If not for your protection, definitely for those around you. The tightening of restrictions around school end of year gatherings and celebrations has been introduced, along with a series of limitations relating to specific activities (singing, choirs, windinstruments). 2020 has been a journey like no other. Like many other small businesses, The District Gazette is locally owned. Our family and staff live (and love) local, we shop where you do, our kids attend the schools that your children do (or did), we dine at local restaurants and use local trades/ services also owned by fellow members of the community. Like many businesses, we are grateful for the support of both our longstanding advertisers (and the new ones!) along with our loyal readers (just like you)! When reaching out to our advertisers be sure to tell them where you found them! It gives them (and us!) a real kick. Now give yourself permission to sneak away and immerse yourself in all the latest local happenings. Enjoy Your Community News. Remember, ‘Help people. Even when you know they can’t help you back’.
