FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Submitted by: Rev John Lavender | The Anglican Parish of Mulgoa P: 47331635 W: anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au | A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am

Easter; the Hope we need It is well known that without hope, people are soon crushed and fall into despair. The Bible’s book of Hebrews describes hope as an “anchor for the soul, firm and secure”. This means that without hope we can drift and lose direction, often ending up making a ship wreck of our lives. But where do we find real hope? When we speak of hope, often we speak of a dream or a wish or a desire, a bit like crossing your fingers and toes and wishing for the best! “I hope I won’t get sick.” “I hope things will work out well.” “I hope the Panthers will do well in the footy!” Easter is a great time of year because it is the birth of real hope. The Apostle Peter in his first letter in the Bible describes it this way; “Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! In his great mercy he has given us new birth into a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and into an inheritance that can never perish, spoil or fade – kept in heaven for you, who through faith are shielded by God’s power until the coming of the salvation that is ready to be revealed in the last time. In this you greatly rejoice.” This is truly brilliant! At Easter, Christian people everywhere remember and celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, an amazing event in history which changes everything. Jesus’ resurrection is THE event which gives people hope – real hope, sure, certain hope, the hope of new life with God, the hope of forgiveness and joy and peace with God, and the hope of an eternity with God; heaven. This continues to be the experience of the people who call Mulgoa Anglican Church home. This is why we would love you to join us over Easter to discover “The Hope we Need.” (See the details below.) PS: Check out our April Holiday Kids Club, 9am – 12.30pm Monday 15th – Wednesday 17th April. Book at www.gpa.church/holiday or call the Church Office.

Pastor’s Corner Another Easter is upon us, so our shops are full of all sorts of Easter eggs, Hot Cross Buns and other tempting treats. For some of us we look forward to having a few extra days off, where we can gather with friends and family, or perhaps enjoy a visit to the Royal Easter Show, or get away for a few days. Now all of the above brings pleasure and enjoyment, but equally so, they distract from the real purpose of Easter. Easter is about God the Father’s love for all mankind, which culminated in the death of His Son Jesus Christ. The death of anybody brings mixed feelings, grief, pain and suffering and sometimes the end of difficult circumstances. All of these were present at Jesus’ Crucifixion; there is no doubt that those close to Him experienced grief, grief for someone they loved; for others there was lost hope, as many believed that Jesus would overthrow Roman tyranny. Jesus suffered way beyond our imagination during those few days; betrayal by one of his disciples, Judas; false accusations and the unfair biased trials by Pontius Pilate and Herod; The crowd’s choice to release a murderer, Barabbas, instead of Jesus who was innocent; The physical abuse, the crown of thorns forced onto Jesus’ head; the nails that pierced his hands; the mocking of the crowd and the soldiers; the sword that pierced his side; following by an agonising death. Despite the efforts of authorities, they could not overcome the reason why Jesus Christ came to earth, Jesus was paying the price for our past, present and future sins, and for all mankind. It was to give us a new life and a new hope, found only through faith in Jesus. The Bible says, “Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come!” As you celebrate this Easter season, give thanks and take time to remember that ultimate sacrifice that Jesus made for you. Remember Jesus has risen and He seeks a relationship with you.

On behalf of the Council, Mayor Matthew Deeth thanked Mr Johnson for his substantial contribution and wished him all the best in his future endeavours. Michael Malone will be the acting Chief Executive Officer.

Vale Maurice “Maurie” Bevan

Warragamba lost one of its long-term residents and original dam construction workers with the recent passing of Maurice “Maurie” Bevan. Maurie began working with the Water Board in 1948 as a 23-year-old, after his discharge from the Army. He originally worked from the old township where he had various jobs including camp cook, before moving on to working at the timber mill. This was where he learnt to cut the timber to be used in the construction of the workers cottages and the community Town Hall. Once construction of the dam was in full swing, he moved into construction jobs and controlled the “Flying Fox” which was used to deliver the concrete for the wall construction. After marrying in 1950, he and his wife Phyllis moved into one of the new cottages which became his one and only home for the rest of his working life and retirement. Maurie was very involved in community life in Warragamba. He was largely responsible for the establishment of the Ambulance Station and was recognised for his efforts with life membership of the NSW Ambulance Service. He was a Board member of the Warragamba Workers Club from 1975-1989, the last 6 years as Vice President. Maurie was also actively involved in politics at all 3 levels of government and at one time was asked to stand for both local and state government elections, however, he was not interested in pursuing such a career. After 40 years of service with the Army and Water Board, he retired in 1985 which gave him more time to pursue his local interests, playing lawn bowls and travelling. After his wife Phyllis passed away in 2009, his health gradually deteriorated until in September 2018 he was placed into a care facility on the Central Coast, close to his two younger sisters. This is where he passed away peacefully on 27th February 2019. He is survived by his two sons, Ken (Orange) and Barry, who still lives in the original family home in Warragamba. Jessica’s Brave Shave Local mother Jessica King would like to invite the community to get behind her for an important cause, as she takes part in this year’s World’s Greatest Shave in Wallacia next month. Jessica will be holding a special event at Wallacia Public School on Monday 13th May at 2:40pm, where she will have her head shaved to raise valuable funds for the Leukaemia Foundation. “The reason I am taking part in the World’s Greatest Shave is because I have lost family and friends close to me through Cancer. Knowing that I could never bring them back, I wanted to do more, and this just pushed me harder to do this. I wanted to make people more aware of what they can do to help, so I decided to be brave and shave” explained Jessica to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. Jessica’s goal in the World’s Greatest Shave is to raise $850 or more. She has already raised over $400 thanks to the kindness and generosity of her donators. She has also set up donation boxes at Wallacia Takeaway, Wallacia Public School. BP Wallacia and Bean Cruis’n West (the mobile café that is parked next to Wallacia Post Office most mornings). “I would like to thank everyone for all their love and support so far, especially my partner who has been a huge supporter. The thought of losing my hair hasn’t been easy” said Jessica. If you would like to support Jessica, you can donate online at http://my.leukaemiafoundation.org.au/jessicaking. U

Just Busted takes on S*#@box Rally 2019 Mulgoa resident and owner of Digital Antenna GuyS Electrical Rick Jenkins and friend Adam Swords are set for the adventure of a lifetime when they join a convoy of teams in the S*#!box Rally, Australia’s largest independently-run fundraiser for Cancer Council. 2019 marks the tenth S*#@box Rally – this time travelling from Perth on 8th May to reach Sydney by 17th May 2019. S*#@box Rally is a challenge to drive cars worth $1,000 or less across Australia via some of its toughest roads to raise money for cancer research. This remarkable event has raised more than $16 million since the first rally in 2010. Rick and Adam make up the ‘Just Busted’ team. They have recently purchased a 12-year-old Volkswagen Transporter that has done 300,000 kilometres. The team are working hard to have the car ready to complete the 5,000-kilometre trip. To participate, each team must raise a minimum of $5,000. Both Rick and Adam’s Fathers have survived from Prostate Cancer and they are passionate to do their part to help find a cure before others suffer needlessly. Box Rallies Founder James Freeman said that the S*#@box Rally is not a race, but a reward for fundraising efforts. “This is a chance to explore Australia, drawing teams from around the country to help achieve the extraordinary. 2019 is the longest rally in SBR history. Travelling West to East, the terrain usually doesn’t change as much as the South to North rallies, but that said, we are not staying on the same latitude so there will still be significant variation in terrain. There will still be a number of surprises for the teams and it will be a truly epic journey. We’re grateful for the support of the teams who take part and the communities who help them to fundraise”. Glenmore Vets Host Local Event Glenmore Heritage Valley GC hosted its own version of the Ryder Cup recently, played amongst Veteran members of the Club on consecutive Tuesdays. Played along the lines of the genuine Ryder Cup, Day 1 featured both Foursomes and Four-Ball competitions, whilst Day 2 featured Singles competition. The Glenmore version of the Ryder Cup was the brainchild of Lady member Sarah Dean, who was inspired after watching the brilliant Ryder Cup series in 2018. Sarah was hoping to provide ‘something different’ to the Glenmore, with a view to running the event annually to create a bit of fun with their members, as well as being competitive. Forty-four players signed up for the event, with the respective team Captains/Managers of both ‘Australia’ and ‘The Rest of the World’ putting their pairs together in match order from one to eleven. Neither team knew the make-up of the opposition, with the match-ups subsequently proving a surprise to all and part of the fun, as did the singles pairings the following week. All the Glenmore members got into the spirit of the tournament, dressing up in their respective team colours, with green and gold for the Australian team and red, white and blue for the Rest of the World. All members and staff joined in the occasion, with flags, both large and small, prominent everywhere on the course, but especially around the Pro Shop and Clubhouse. Malcolm Dean undertook the role of Official Starter, announcing each match in turn on the 1st tee between 7:00am and 8:30am. Australia had a strong upper hand at the end of Day 1, winning the Foursomes 4-0 and the Four-Ball 6-1 for a 10-1 lead. The Rest of the World had a stronger showing on Day 2 in the Singles event, but still succumbed 12-10 to give Australia overall success with a 22-11 victory. The successful Australian team were awarded their version of the inaugural Ryder Cup, along with balls and a marker for each player, whilst members of the losing team each won a ball. A total of forty-nine players took part during the two weeks and in many cases, partnered people they had never played with or in some situations had even seen before, so the event became a great opportunity for members to get to know more people within their Vets community. With wives and husbands also playing in opposing teams in some instances, the event continued to create fun both on and off the course. Following the huge popularity and positive feedback, the Glenmore version of the Ryder Cup has now been confirmed as a regular event on the Glenmore Heritage Valley GC calendar. U

Building Designs Advice WHO CAN DESIGN YOUR PROJECT? The process of engaging an architectural designer can be like stepping into a world of unknown procedures, expectations and costs. We don’t engage an architectural building designer as often as we do see a doctor, solicitor/ lawyer, accountants or other professionals. Don’t forget that architectural designers are professionals with qualifications, diploma’s, degrees and experience similar to other professionals mentioned before. So why don’t we credit these professionals the same as doctors, lawyers or accountants? Because most people don’t use these professionals on a regular basis. There is an opinion out there that an Architect is very expensive to engage when designing your home, addition/ extension or any building project, and therefore are out of the reach of ordinary people. It is a fact however that 75% to 80% of all domestic building designs are performed by Building Designers, not Architects. These building designers are qualified professionals with a lot of hands-on experience in domestic, commercial, industrial type designs and knowledge of local council’s regulations and planning laws. PARENTS CORNER

Warragamba Preschool Inc.

Guest article by Professor Matt Sanders

Single Parenting Single parents often say they feel it’s more difficult to discipline a child without a partner’s support. But it’s very important to approach discipline in exactly the same way as if you were parenting with someone else. It’s vital to have a game plan and be consistent. That means setting house rules that don’t fluctuate. It may surprise some people to know that children like boundaries. Kids very easily become comfortable with the familiarity of a routine at bedtime, at mealtimes or when it’s time to get out of the house in the morning. Positive and predictable routines mean discipline will become much easier. Life won’t have to be full of big battles over little issues! Another worry many single parents express is the lack of a significant male or female influence in the household. Mothers may feel this more keenly when they’re raising a son alone, as many fathers do when they’re raising a daughter. It’s always important to encourage your child to have role models and mentors. Role models can show children how to behave, and what is the appropriate thing to do. So, single parents may want to look for opportunities for their children to get to know and have other men or women in their life. It could be a grandparent, an aunt or uncle, a trusted family friend or a sports coach. Having someone who will serve a mentoring role throughout the child’s life can be a great example to – and support for – the child. GAME REVIEW

.....

Pokémon Pokken Tournament DX Pokémon Pokken Tournament DX is a game that begins with 23 characters, where each of them are unique in their own way. In this Pokémon game, there are 9 different game modes. There is one that is a standout, and that is battle mode. You firstly choose 1 of the 23 Pokémon and then you choose backup Pokémon. There are Pokémon that help you during battle, in case you are losing, and they will hurt your opponent so you can get time to plan your next move. After that, you choose your arena that you will battle in and there are 20 different ones. You will then have a fight until you beat your other Pokémon, where you can do special combos or quick attacks. There are a wide range of attacks you can do, and my favourite is the special attack. It is a very cool move and is very effective to use on your opponents. It is a first to 3 battle, so when you win 3 times you completely win! I recommend this game to anyone over the age of 9 years and rate it 6.5/10 (only available on Nintendo Switch).

First Foot Forward Incursion at Luddenham Public School

Daylight Savings Ends 2:00 am Sunday, 7 April 2019 All times are in Eastern Australia time

Where Every Child Matters Last month, a team from Western Sydney University visited Luddenham Public School to introduce students to the world of future learning. The program encouraged Stage 3 students (Years 5 and 6) to think about goals and opportunities for learning beyond secondary school. The activities were both educational and fun, with the aim of informing students about what university can offer, and how they can go on to study subjects which interest them. During the visit, Luddenham students spent time learning Spanish using headphones. They also used investigation skills, assessing evidence such as fingerprints in order to solve forensic problems. Teacher, Ms Fay Mantas, said “The students were really engaged. Activities included an outline of the seven stepping stones of life. The students were able to see that they have already nearly completed primary school, and they were encouraged to think about the future steps”. Luddenham Public School received positive feedback from the Western Sydney University team, who commented that Luddenham students had displayed focus, perseverance and respectful behaviours in undertaking all activities. Later in the year, students will visit a Western Sydney University Campus to take part in another program in a fun and friendly environment. In Term 4, the students’ participation will be recognised, and they will be congratulated on their journey with the First Foot Forward program. HEALTH MATTERS

How does too much Paracetamol cause Liver toxicity? Paracetamol toxicity is the leading cause of acute liver failure in the Western world, including Australia, and New Zealand. So how exactly does it cause liver damage? Let’s take a look at what happens when you take a normal dose of paracetamol. The drug is rapidly absorbed from the stomach and small intestine into the blood stream (Farrell 2018). It’s transported from the blood into liver cells. Liver cells contain enzymes that pick up each paracetamol molecule and stick a sugar group or a sulphate group onto the side of the molecule. Paracetamol molecules with these added sugar or sulphate groups are no longer active as a pain killer, and are non-toxic and very water soluble allowing them to be passed back into the blood stream, transported to the kidneys & eliminated in the urine (See diagram). When a somewhat larger paracetamol dose is taken, the above two enzymes become overwhelmed. This forces the excess paracetamol molecules to overflow from the normal pathways. Paracetamol that overflows is converted in liver cells to a new and highly toxic & reactive molecule called ‘NAPQI’. But before NAPQI can do any damage another back up set of enzymes comes to the rescue taking every NAPQI and sticking a funny molecule called ‘glutathione’ onto it. This renders NAPQI harmless & water soluble, allowing elimination via the kidneys and urine. Emergency room Doctors actually give a compound called NAC to paracetamol overdose patients to help liver cells make glutathione to detoxify NAPQI. If a very large paracetamol dose is taken, or a relatively high dose over a prolonged period, liver cells end up running out of ‘glutathione’ molecules to detox NAPQI which means that this backstop detox pathway no longer works. This leaves a lot of highly toxic NAPQI inside liver cells to do damage and here’s where problems occur. When NAPQI is allowed to roam free inside liver cells it binds to liver cell proteins and stops many from working. In particular NAPQI binds to proteins in mitochondria – the energy producing organelles within your liver cells – that produce ‘most’ of the cell’s energy. When mitochondria stop working properly, they produce large amounts of free radicals which further damage cell proteins. Eventually the cell loses its ability to produce energy, and this leads to cell DNA breakdown, and finally the whole cell ‘explodes’ leaking toxic contents into the tissue spaces around it and into the blood stream. When this happens to ‘many cells’ at the same time doctors can measure increased

levels of liver enzymes in your blood. Thus, it is the excess NAPQI that leads to hepatocellular damage & death, and eventually to hepatic failure. Similar enzymatic reactions occur in organs other than the liver also, such as the kidney, and can contribute to some degree of organ dysfunction in other areas of the body. If you have ongoing chronic musculoskeletal pain, physical therapy such muscle elongation therapy can often help, so why not call us at the clinic to discuss your issues.

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

New Baby Boy for Theresa!! It’s a Boy! On Friday 1st March 2019, our veterinarian, Theresa gave birth to a beautiful baby boy. Both mum and bub are doing well. Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington The 115th Annual Luddenham Show has been and gone, and everyone seems to agree that it was a huge success. The official opening took place on Saturday afternoon with Ross Fowler OAM – Mayor of Penrith declaring the Show open. The King in Concert with David Cazalet was so entertaining, the kids loved the wrestling and the fireworks were amazing. This year’s Show saw an increase of pavilion entries with 1,261. A big thank you to all that were involved, volunteered or attended. The RMS have released the latest plan for the M12 Motorway and held community information sessions where the project team were available to answer questions about the preliminary design and access strategy. Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport was last month unveiled as the Airport’s operating name by Prime Minister Scott Morrison, who was joined by members of Nancy-Bird’s family. Western Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Graham Millett said Nancy-Bird Walton’s pioneering spirit made her the perfect namesake for the transformational infrastructure project. “Western Sydney International is a oncein-a-generation project that promises a new era of jobs and opportunities for the millions of people who call the region home” Mr Millett said. “I think it is a fitting recognition of a trailblazing aviator and one of Australia’s great pioneers, Nancy-Bird Walton”. Mr

Millett said that the inclusion of ‘International’ in the name was important to ensure the premium nature of the airport is recognised globally. “This will be a full-service airport, offering international, domestic and freight flights” Mr Millett said. The NSW Government has announced that the Western City and Aerotropolis Authority (WCAA) will be located in Penrith. The WCAA is tasked with planning and developing the Western Sydney Aerotropolis. The Authority’s Board appointments so far - Chair: Dr Jennifer Westacott with Geoff Roberts, Gabrielle Trainor, Alan Stoneham, Mark Binskin and Sam Sangster was appointed as CEO. The 11,200-hectare Western Sydney Aerotropolis will be Greater Sydney’s newest economic hub. The Luddenham Agribusiness Precinct provides an opportunity to create a world-class agribusiness facility adjoining the Western Sydney Airport according to the recently formed WCAA. The State Government also announced that they were fast tracking the Agribusiness Precinct. The new Agribusiness Precinct will link directly with the Sydney Markets, who have agreed to have a base at the Western Sydney Aerotropolis. The Agribusiness Precinct will consist of a series of high-tech farming and climate-controlled glasshouses that will produce fresh food and handle incoming produce from NSW farms for global export - all from Luddenham. Hopefully now, the WCAA will let us know what the plan is for the Luddenham Village. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com. MEET OUR TEAM

Did you survive the social-media meltdown last month? Thankfully, the Gazette powers on without the reliance of internet connectivity - you'll always find us and the details of local businesses aplenty neatly tucked away in your letterbox, the first week of the month. We're on the cusp of Easter, School Holidays and remembering those who served and died as Anzac Day approaches. Here at the District Gazette 'We Live. Love.Local'. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Go easy on yourself. Whatever you do today, let it be enough.'
