Kindy is Calling for Nash It’s that time of year when parents rush around in search of crisp new uniforms, sensible black shoes and a trolley load of school supplies that never seem to fit into those teeny little pencil cases. So, who’s ready for school? Nash is! This month, 4-year-old (soon to be 5) Nash Lewtschenko will be starting Kindergarten at Holy Family Primary School in Luddenham. His mum, Jacqui Lewtschenko, says that he is all set for the big day. “He’s looking forward to learning how to read and write, making new friends and doing craft” she said. Nash will be joining his big sister Heidi, who goes into Year 1 at the same school this year. Heidi has already set her sights on helping her brother and making sure that his transition to big school is as smooth as it can be. “I can’t wait to see Nash at school every day and teach him the school rules” said Heidi. Gary and Jacqui, Nash’s parents, know the rollercoaster of highs and lows that go with sending your child to school for the first time. It may get easier the second time around, but it’s still just as emotional. “Sending our youngest child off to school is certainly an exciting and emotional time. We are looking forward to watching Nash grow academically and personally” they said. When quizzed about what he would like to do once he finishes school, there was no hesitation from Nash at all, “I want to be a printer just like Dad, so I can work with him” he cheered. Best of luck Nash and to all the local children starting school this year. It’s the beginning of an amazing journey that they will never forget.  Nash in his school uniform ready for the BIG day! | Image Supplied

Luddenham Celebrant Conducts First Same-Sex Marriage Ceremony

E M P LOYM E N T OPPORTUNITY All Terrain Plumbing Services Pty is seeking a Tradesmen or 4th year Plumber to join our growing company for a Full Time Position. We are looking for a responsible employee that is highly motivated, willing to work hard, must have a current Drivers License and will work well in a team environment. Please contact Grant on 0427 721 234 or email allterrainplumbingservices@gmail.com

On 3rd November 2017, Janice Bradley attended the launch of Mardi Gras 2018 at the Opera House, with its sails lit up for the occasion in a dazzling rainbow. Unbeknownst to her, six weeks later, she would become the celebrant to conduct the first same-sex marriage in Australia. “Never in my wildest dreams did I think that little old me sitting on the steps with hundreds of people would be making history within a few short weeks” said Bradley. At 2pm on 9th December 2017 in Macarthur Park, Camden, Australian history was indeed made, when Lauren Price and Amy Laker were married by Janice. Two other women said, ‘I Do’ on the same afternoon in Melbourne at 4pm, so that meant Lauren and Amy (31 and 29 at the time), were officially the first. Bradley was appointed as a civil celebrant in 2012 and has conducted nearly 200 weddings since then. She became interested in the occupation as a bride herself. “Around 20 years ago when I was getting married, I thought it would be something I could do to help make a day special for a couple” she recalled. She has also officiated for numerous funerals, baby naming, vow renewals, and same-sex commitment ceremonies before the law changed. She has several more same-sex marriage ceremonies scheduled for this year. This is an issue that is close to her heart. “I have a son who is in a same-sex marriage. They got married in New Zealand and since then have become foster parents to four beautiful children”. As for her role in history she humbly said this – “It was an honour”. Congratulations to Lauren and Amy and well-done Janice.  The happy couple, surrounded by their bridal party and celebrant Janice Bradley [R]. Image: Adam Spooner Photography. Warragamba to Host Mental Health Fundraiser Silverdale resident Jammison Wallace knows too well the impact that mental illness can have on people’s lives. It’s a topic that is close to her heart, after losing family and friends to suicide and knowing people who suffer with this every day. She has organised a fundraising event for LIVIN, a charity that helps bring awareness to mental health and suicide prevention, that will take place on Saturday 10th of February at Warragamba Town Hall. The important event has a wide range of activities planned for the night, from live music, a photo booth, raffles, silent auction, competitions, Mrs Australia Continents 2018 who will be providing more information on the topic of mental health and of course dancing and food. “I would like to raise as much awareness and money as possible at the event. Mental illnesses are still under shadowed and a lot of people don’t fully understand the extremes that any of the illnesses in that category can do. It’s not as simple as ‘taking pills’ or ‘getting over it’ like many people still think. I want people to have a better understanding and leave the event knowing that they have made such a difference in helping raise more awareness for mental health” explained Jammison. Jammison chose LIVIN to benefit from the fundraising event after researching many different charities. “I stumbled across LIVIN on social media. After looking into them, I loved everything that they did. The company owners started it all up themselves with no government funding, just the pure passion to raise more awareness. I emailed them and every step of the way they have helped me and have been nothing short of amazing” she said. The local community can get involved in the event through donating a prize for the raffles to promote your business, or through the GoFundMe page (good vibrations – fundraiser event). For tickets to the event, you can email the organiser at goodvibrations_event@outlook.com.

The Mysteries of Little Notre Dame

Mulgoa’s Brittanie Shipway | Image: Blueprint Studios

Growing up on Fairlight Road, Brittanie Shipway had heard about Notre Dame, the Mulgoa Estate once owned by Emmanuel Margolin and its intriguing history. This year, she will be producing ‘The Mysteries of Little Notre Dame’, which will be an investigative podcast about the Estate and will be released in late 2018 on the podcast app and iTunes. The production will be a collaboration with local radio station Vintage FM. The podcast will look at Notre Dame, from Emmanuel Margolin’s monster mansion, to his prized private zoo in the 70’s and 80’s, to the abandoned park that resides there today. They will be interviewing locals about Notre Dame; what they remember about the zoo, the owners, and the house itself. Most people may remember the eccentric figure that was Mr Margolin and his mansion and in this series, they will piece together the puzzle of Notre Dame, its peaking successes and its ultimate demise. “You know the saying ‘truth is stranger than fiction’? When I was younger, I’d heard about Notre Dame through the grape vine, but there always seemed to be a sense of mystery surrounding the place. Nobody quite knows the facts. But the more research I do, the more strange and wonderful this place seems!” Brittanie explained. “There’s also something beautiful about sitting down with the locals and listening to their stories. Our community in Mulgoa is made up of so many incredible people from all walks of life, and I want to sit down as they have a yarn while I sip on a cup of tea. I could have done a podcast about some famous person, but I want to write about the town I grew up in, about the people I love. That’s infinitely more interesting to me than the latest celebrity gossip” beamed Brittanie. If you have a story to tell about Mulgoa’s Notre Dame, you can contact Brittanie. She’ll be interviewing locals over the next few months. She can be contacted at info@brittanieshipway.com for more information.

Welcome to the first edition for 2018 of the Latest in Luddenham, this year will be a very important year for us with the planning for what will happen around the Airport, which of course includes Luddenham. Some sad news last year with the passing of Gordon Lynel (Fatty) on the 13th December. Gordon lived his whole life in Luddenham, he was treasurer of the Progress for over 40 years, and he was also a member of the Bushfire Brigade for over 10 years. Gordon was very involved with the Luddenham dances and will be sadly missed around town. Well the next phase of the Western Sydney Airport is under way with work beginning on the relocation of the 3.2-kilometre section of a high-voltage power lines that currently cross the Airport site. TransGrid manages and operates the NSW transmission network. The transmission line is being relocated underground, within the boundary of the airport site. This will allow earthmoving works to take place at the site and for the airport to operate. During January the RMS released the long awaited Updated EIS, and the Department of Planning and Environment has now published the Submissions and Preferred Infrastructure Report. Further information is on the RMS website under ‘The Northern Road upgrade, Mersey Road to Glenmore Parkway, also at http:// majorprojects.planning.nsw.gov.au/index.pl?action=view_ job&job_id=7127’. The Country Show

Roll up, roll up ladies and gentlemen and head to the 114th Luddenham Show, to be held on the 17th and the 18th of February at the historic Luddenham Showground. The Luddenham Show is known as ‘THE COUNTRY SHOW’ and is traditionally the first of the lead up shows to the Sydney Royal Easter Show, as many months of hard work culminate for some of the best in livestock and stage acts in Australia. With these ever-changing times for the district, the Committee of Luddenham A.H & I Society are proud to keep the traditions of the district’s biggest annual event alive and well. Both days are ‘chock-a-block’ filled with entertainment and activities for the young and the not so young alike. There will be the traditional show favourites such as two full days of horse classes, cattle going under the judge’s eye on the Saturday, whilst the wood chips fly on the Sunday with not just some of Australia’s best but also international axe men cutting logs. You don’t need to be a world class woodchopper or breeder of top quality livestock to get involved with your local show. A wide variety of pavilion categories will enable everyone to take part. These range from home brew, flowers, photography, art, needlework, best scarecrow, work boots, poultry to Lego designs. This year’s main arena entertainment would not be out

of place at a big Royal Show. HLS Trick Riding, hailing from Queensland and recognised as one of Australia’s foremost horse trick riding outfits will be there. Considered the most dangerous sport in the world is the open bull ride. Cowboys will pit their wits against 800kgs of raging steak for 8 seconds, trying to take home a pocket full of cash and glory. One of the most popular Sunday entertainments taking place is the 3 sheep dog trials. Back by popular demand, after making a great debut last year, will be the crowd favourite demolition derby. Who will be the last vehicle left? You can enter and compete in the dog high jump, yank-a-ute, poet’s breakfast, ice cream eating, whip cracking, talent quest and country kids contest. Stage entertainment will feature sheep shearing demo’s, clowns Kozi and Pinky, singers, dancers, along with the walkabout reptile show. Back after many years is the Miss Luddenham Show Girl Competition. ‘The Cool’ will hit the stage on Saturday night, playing a wide variety of music. The team behind the Sydney Harbour New Year’s Eve fireworks are booked to light up the night sky. See you at ‘THE COUNTRY SHOW’. PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com How are you going after the long Summer break? If you are feeling relaxed, you are probably wondering how to maintain that feeling as the kids get back into school, and you get back into work/activities/appointments. If you are already feeling frazzled, there is hope. One of the five key aspects of Triple P (Positive Parenting Program) is Looking After Yourself. If you are an empty cup, how can you fill your children’s cups? If you are overwhelmed, stressed, cranky, tired, it is so much harder to meet all of the demands placed on you. Your relationships suffer. When I mention this, parents usually say they don’t have time to look after themselves. They say they don’t have time to spend hours at their favourite activity. I agree. You have to find small moments every day, to do something that fills your cup. Take 5 minutes regularly throughout the day to decompress. Take time to stretch, draw, colour, sip your tea or coffee, sit in the sun, watch the trees sway in the breeze, breathe.. Anything that gives you a moment of calm. It’s all about not doing very much and paying attention to the present moment. Drop your thoughts about the past or the future, and focus on what is happening in the ‘here and now’. This is called ‘mindfulness’, and it is being used to treat many mental health conditions like anxiety and depression. But it can be used by anyone, and should probably be used by everyone. This is not hippy-la-la stuff, it’s science! Humans are not machines, they need rest, delight, joy, connection, and meaning to keep them going. It’s hard to do at first, but practice makes perfect. When you become accustomed to taking these moments for yourself, you may start to include your children in some of these moments. You might start taking time to connect with your kids over something simple You might decompress together, and in that moment, you are deepening your relationship and teaching them a handy tool for life. I have started gathering some resources over on my Hands, Hearts and Minds blog. Go to https://handsheartsminds. wordpress.com/looking-after-yourself-mindfulness/ for some ideas to get you started. Enjoy !

Play for Mulgoa Valley Football Club With the 2018 soccer season getting ready, the Mulgoa Valley Football Club are a local club who are looking forward to a big and exciting year ahead. The family club, who are located only 10 minutes from Penrith and the M4 Motorway, are looking to attract new players for the upcoming season. The Mulgoa Valley Football Club had 12 teams compete in the local competition last year, ranging from the Under 5’s right through to the All Ages. Some of the club’s highlights included several teams finishing in the top 4, as well as the Under 11’s going through the season unbeaten, until the last game when they had a number of players missing. This year the club are hoping to have a great season, thanks to the recruitment of new players and further developing their grounds. With a new committee on board, there are lots of new ideas and renewed energy and enthusiasm which promises to be exciting to be a part of. “We are a family club. Virtually everyone knows one another or somebody else at the club. Up until now, it’s been very much a word of mouth club with very little advertising. We have great facilities which rival the best in the district” said Ed Crowther, Club Competition Secretary and Life Member. As the only sporting club left in Mulgoa, the local community can get behind Mulgoa Valley Football Club by sponsoring a team. It’s a great opportunity to get involved, whilst also having your children playing sport locally without having to travel too far. Mulgoa Valley Football Club are one of the most successful clubs in the area, representing the district on many occasions in the NSW Champion of Champions with great distinction. Preheat oven to 180°C. Grease a square 23cm cake pan. Sift the flour and cornflour together 2-3 times. 2. Use an electric mixer to whisk eggs in a bowl until pale and fluffy. While whisking, gradually add the sugar, 1 tablespoonful at a time, until well combined. Continue whisking until thick and pale and a ribbon trails when the beaters are lifted. 3. Sift combined flours over egg mixture and use a whisk to gently fold until just combined. Combine the boiling water and butter in a jug and pour down the side of the bowl. Gently fold until just combined. Pour into prepared pan and gently smooth the surface. Bake in preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until cake springs back when lightly pressed in the centre. Remove from oven and immediately turn out onto a wire rack. Set aside to cool completely. 4. The History and the Mystery of Valentine’s Day

Chocolates, greeting cards, red roses, champagne, jewellery, teddy bears holding love hearts that read ‘I Love You’, date nights, marriage proposals, even weddings…it’s Valentine’s Day! The 14th of February is big business for restaurants, florists, jewellers, greeting card companies and of course the beautiful chocolate makers of the world - where would we be without them? While it’s true that there is a very commercial aspect to this holiday in its modern form, the history behind Valentine’s Day is rather mysterious. The legend of St. Valentine as a patron saint is complex because the Catholic Church recognises more than one with the name of Valentine or Valentinus. One story speaks of a priest in 3rd century Rome who performed secret weddings during a time when it had been outlawed by Emperor Claudius II, who thought that single men made better soldiers. When this was discovered, it didn’t end well for the priest. Let’s just say, the Emperor did not reward him with a box of chocolates in the

shape of a heart. Another tale suggests that ‘Valentine’ was put to death for helping Christians to escape from Roman prisons and yet another claim that he was a prisoner himself who fell in love with his jailor’s daughter. He allegedly signed a letter to her ‘From your Valentine’. By the middle ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France and a pagan festival, Lupercalia, developed relating to fertility. It was replaced at the end of the 5th century by Pope Gelasius as a feast day for the Christian church. The first written Valentines associated with love started appearing after 1400. Exchanging cards and gifts became popular in the 18th century spreading to other countries and eventually developing in to what it is today. Roses are red, violets are blue, what does Valentine’s Day mean to you?  Love.Love.Love | Image: www.pexels.com. Article: Lisa Finn-Powell

Structural Scoliosis – You Can Get Some Pain Relief Unlike functional scoliosis, structural scoliosis is not a simple lateral curve of the spine. It involves a more complex threedimensional deformity of vertebrae. Thus, the side to side curvature we see is normally a product of two abnormalities 1. Increased lordosis (like the bend in your lower back) 2. Abnormal rotation of individual vertebrae with respect to one another Structural scoliosis is actually very common. "Normalâ€? children have neither straight nor symmetrical spines. Fifteen per cent of children show evidence of a lateral curvature on a visual examination and as many as 30 per cent with a more accurate measurement. Anatomists two centuries ago clearly demonstrated that everyone had a scoliosis, albeit of small magnitude (Dickson 1984). Structural scoliosis is also 7 times more common in women. It can be classified by the type of curve that is seen (see picture) or by the age it develops i.e. • infantile • juvenile • adolescent By far the majority of cases are adolescent onset and screening of children allows early intervention to minimise progression. Doctors measure the size of the curve from X-rays using the Cobb technique (see below). A curvature of 20 degrees or more is considered significant, but this is rare. For example, only 2-5 people per 1000 with structural scoliosis of thoracic spine have a curve of 20 degrees or more. Most cases of structural scoliosis (80%) are of a type called ‘idiopathic scoliosis’. Idiopathic just means that no one knows

why it occurred. For the rest there is a laundry list of conditions that lead to scoliosis, but some include: • Congenital (bone abnormalities present at birth) • Neuromuscular conditions such as • Cerebral Palsy • Muscular Dystrophy • Connective Tissue Disorders • Marfan’s Syndrome • Rheumatoid Arthritis • Certain Dwarves • Trauma • Fractures • Irradiation • Surgery You may need to consult an orthopaedic or neurosurgeon, and treatments in severe cases may include a ‘Harrington’ metal rod, and / or bone grafts to stabilize the spine. People with structural scoliosis are often afflicted with great back pain. They have tremendous muscle fatigue, because day-in & day-out for years, the muscles around the spine have to stabilise the body around a bent spine. This is very hard work indeed. Fatigued muscles cells sustain damage & release chemicals of inflammation. These cause fluid accumulation & muscle swelling, and pain. Physical therapy can help relieve pain for people with structural scoliosis, however the treatment needs to be regular and ongoing to be beneficial because the back muscles are continually over worked. If you have structural scoliosis and would like some advice, please come see us at the clinic.

Tips For Goal Setting in 2018 We’re already a month into the new year and for many that carries a mixed bag of emotion about the year ahead. So, I’m going to share some tips on goal setting. Tip #1: Review What Was Take a moment to review 2017. What worked? What didn’t work? What needs to change? Tip #2: Less Is More I find when working with business owners that three top-level goals is optimal and avoids overwhelm. Tip #3: Have Purpose Make your goals specific. I like to use the equation: X to Y by date. (I will increase revenue from $500K in February 2018 to $750K by December 2018). Once you’ve set your goals for the year, work backwards to break these down into smaller specific goals that each have a direct impact on achieving your top-level goals. I like to stick with a ‘process of three’. Eg. To achieve your toplevel goals, what three specific goals do you need to achieve each quarter? To achieve your quarterly goals, what three goals do you need to achieve each month? To achieve those, what three goals do you need to achieve weekly? And finally, what three goals do you need to achieve daily? You begin to see how acting on purpose with purpose every day stacks up to achieving your goals for the year. Tip #4: Write It Down When you’ve worked through the process, write it down and make it visible. This is key to execution and this is where most

people fail. Map it in a calendar and you have your high-level action plan. Tip#5: Stay Agile We’re living in dynamic times. Your goals are about propelling your business forward, not holding it back. Don’t let them paralyse you. Stay agile, adaptable and flex with flux.

BUSINESS SPOTLIGHT DAGS Electrical

Local electrical business, DAGS Electrical, pride themselves on serving the community the best they can through their experience, since starting in 2000, right through to their exceptional customer service and personal touch. Owner Rick Jenkins, started the business doing antennas, before branching out into AV gear and mounting televisions. In 2012, he obtained his electrical licence, followed by an Advanced Diploma in Renewable Energies. Last year, the local business also obtained their split system air conditioning licence, allowing them to install air conditioners. Rick is joined by apprentice Jackson, who brings local knowledge to the team. DAGS Electrical also have an AV team of two and a further four contractors for their bigger jobs. “Our point of difference is our personal service. Most of our customers we have had for many years. Personally, I remember the people and their homes when I attend jobs. Our level of experience means that once our customers have got DAGS, they tend to have other things that we can help them with too” explained Rick. “Our goals are to just keep doing what we’re doing. We don’t want to grow massively and forget our customers. We want to continue looking after our existing customers, get new customers and to have a good stable business. Having a fairly small number of customers that are looked after really well is very important to us” added Rick.

Councillor’s Corner by Cr Matt Gould

Welcome to 2018, I hope that you and your family had an enjoyable and relaxing Christmas holiday period and are looking forward to the New Year. 2018 is already starting to look like it will be a good year for our area, with a number of projects that I have fought for expected to be completed this year. This includes the reopening of the 18th St viewing platform, the official opening of the RV camping area, the completion of the long overdue repairs to Blaxland Crossing (Wallacia Bridge) and the resurfacing of part of Silverdale Rd in asphalt. This year will also see the completion of the new all abilities playground, a project that is worth over a million dollars. Development Update At the December meeting, 2 major development proposals affecting the area came before Council, being the North Silverdale Planning Proposal (up to 600 homes and expansion of the Silverdale shopping centre) and the Vesta Homes development application for 79 homes in part of the old lion park site. I moved several amendments to the North Silverdale Planning Proposal, which were supported by a majority of Councillors, to address a number of community concerns including: • Ensuring that there is appropriate infrastructure to support any development • The removal of medium density and mixed use zoning on the site which would have allowed up to 490 units to be constructed • Ensuring greater community consultation on the proposal going forward. This proposal has now been sent to the Department of Planning for what is known as a gateway amendment and will come back to council after that has been completed. The Vesta Homes development application was refused by Council due to a number of issues with the proposal, including the proposal not providing for suitable supporting infrastructure improvements such as upgrades to Marsh Rd and the proposal being inconsistent with the character of the area, with the

overwhelming majority of lots being around 450m2. For help on any council related issues please email me at matt.gould@wollondilly.nsw.gov.au, call me on 0427 936 471 or check out my facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ CrMattGould).

Essential Road Maintenance On Mulgoa Road Motorists are advised changed traffic conditions will be in place on Mulgoa Road at Mulgoa for around three months for essential road maintenance. Roads and Maritime Services is replacing asphalt on Mulgoa Road from Mayfair Road to around 300 metres south of St Thomas Road. The NSW Government is funding this essential maintenance work as part of its $1.5 billion program to maintain and improve the 18,028 kilometre state road network. The maintenance work aims to prevent or minimise damage to roads from weather and wear and tear to make them safer, provide consistent driving conditions and reduce maintenance costs in the long term. To minimise disruption to motorists, work will be carried out at night between 8pm and 5am until Friday 27 April, excluding public holidays as well as Friday and Saturday nights, weather permitting. For the safety of workers and motorists, lane closures and a reduced speed limit of 40 km/h will be in place during work hours and may affect travel times. Motorists are advised to follow the direction of traffic controllers and signs and keep to the reduced speed limit. Roads and Maritime thanks the community for its patience while work is carried out. For the latest traffic updates call 132 701, visit livetraffic.com or download the Live Traffic NSW App.

Discover the Real Jesus Many things make Jesus stand out from anyone else in history. Jesus’ speeches, such as the Sermon on the Mount, which you can read in the Bible’s New Testament gospel of Matthew, contain such wisdom that the force of what He says still impacts us today with power and urgency. Jesus raised the bar on relationships. In Jesus’ view, people matter. Relationships matter. Care for people is to be given the highest priority; forgiveness, patience, goodness, kindness, gentleness, self control; these are the qualities that make life work. Jesus challenged people on things like anger and hatred. He spoke on adultery and cheap lust. He challenged the view of those promoting an easy attitude to divorce, which cheapened marriage. He spoke on the importance of being true to your word, keeping your promises; not seeking revenge but to love and pray for your enemies. This was and continues to be radial stuff! Jesus also explains how any person can live the good life. This is part of what He says; “Blessed are the poor in spirit...

those who mourn...the meek...those who hunger and thirst for righteousness...the merciful...the pure in heart...the peacemakers.” Jesus challenged those who would listen to Him to humbly recognise our need for God. Learning from God about being passionate for what is right, true and good; having your heart as goal, mercy and kindness; your heart ruled by purity, honesty, peacemaking. These ideas seem basic yet they are hard to find in our world. Jesus insists; the “blessed” or good life will be found by the person who seeks after God and lives with these things as their goal. But the crucial question remains, “What will you do with Jesus?” Jesus calls on all people not just to hear His words but to put them into practice by building your life on knowing and following Him. Can I encourage you to start your year by joining us at Mulgoa Anglican Church? Hear for yourself what Jesus says about life so you can know for yourself the impact and transformation that so many at our Church have been able to experience.

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027 $1720 Guide Dog Donation from the Santa Photos with Pets Santa Claus visited Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2017 and photos were taken with your pets. We all enjoyed watching your pets get dressed up with Santa hats and scarves and sitting on Santa’s knee for a photo. With a lot of laughs and giggles, we took many cute Santa photos. Thank you for all of the donations for the photos. With your great support, we raised $1720 for The Guide Dogs NSW/ACT!! Wow!! We all had lots of fun and The Guide Dogs get a great donation. Thanks again for participating. Too much fun!! Keeping your Pets Safe in the Heat Wave With the unrelenting hot weather, it is important to look after your pets: • Provide shelter for your pets, so they get away from direct sunlight. • Provide plenty of water. Animals do not sweat like humans and they rely on the evaporation of the water in their mouths to cool themselves down. So they need extra water so they do not overheat. • Provide extra water sources in case they are spilled. • Provide kiddy pools so your pet can lay in the water. • Bring your pets indoors with air conditioning, if possible. • Consider day boarding in air conditioning.

• Avoid exercising your pets during the heat of the day. Walk them in the early morning, or later at night when it is cooler. • Do not leave pets in a car or vehicle. If your pet has a medical condition, they may be more prone to heat stroke: e.g. obesity; Brachycephalic breeds (shortnosed/flat-faced) e.g. Pugs, English bull dogs, French bulldogs, Pekingese and Persian and Himalayan cats; Respiratory disease/ breathing problems - laryngeal paralysis, collapsing trachea; Thick/long hair coat; Heart problems/Cardiovascular disease; Extremes in age (young/old); Neurological disease. Signs of Heat Stroke Common signs include: • Incessant panting; Drooling, salivating; Agitation, restlessness; Very red or pale gums; Bright red tongue; Increased heart rate; Breathing distress; Vomiting, Diarrhoea (possibly with blood); Signs of mental confusion; Delirium; Dizziness; Staggering; Lethargy; Weakness; Muscle tremors; Seizures; Collapsing and lying down; Little to no urine production; Coma or Death. How do you Treat a Pet with Heatstroke? First step is to instigate Emergency First Aid by bathing your pet in cool water. Heat stroke is a life threatening emergency - always see a vet. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. Welcome to our first edition for 2018! I know the Christmas and New Year period raced by in a blur for many, and here we are, already facing what February has in store. Many of our readers are small business owners, or know someone that is. For those in business, the start of a New Year is the ideal time to take it to the next level or review the challenges of years gone by and turn a new leaf. Upscale, downsize, branch out, out-source, gain exposure, increase sales. Sharon delves into this further on page 15. Whatever your plans or focus, we wish you every success in 2018. As always, we have plenty of local stories and events this month, so bask in the sun and catch up on all the latest happenings. Enjoy your Community News, and remember, "If you change nothing, nothing changes".
