Local couple Malcolm and Jennifer Olsson were just twelve years-old when they met for the first time at the Olsson family home in Harris Park. Jennifer’s family, who lived in West Ryde, were visiting Malcolm’s family and surely enough the two quickly became friends. After six years of courtship and getting to know each other, the love-struck couple married at Ryde Court House on 5th December 1961 – Jennifer then aged seventeen-years old and Malcolm eighteen-years old. Soon after they were married, the Olsson’s were blessed with the news that they were pregnant with their first child, Rachel, who was born the following September. By the time Rachel was five-years old, there were two new additions to the Olsson family - Ashley and Fiona. However, tragedy struck the young family when their third child, Fiona, aged only sixteen months, passed away after contracting a severe gastro virus. This sudden loss was devastating to the family, but Jennifer and Malcolm found comfort in each other’s love, and that of their children, during this time of great sadness. After a few years, the couple went on to add to their family and have two more children, Nigel and Lyndon. Fast forward forty-four years later and the Olsson’s now have an extended family of twelve grandchildren and are fortunate to also have eight great-grandchildren. Throughout their marriage, the Olsson’s have always maintained good friendships and a strong family bond which they believe adds a richness to their marriage. There have been many highlights during their journey through life together, with one of the most recent being seeing their second eldest grandson, Jonathon Milne (Rachel’s son) winning a bronze medal at the 2016 Paralympics in Brazil after breaking his neck in a surfing accident at Avoca Beach at Christmas in 2012. Another recent highlight was an enjoyable two-week cruise with all thirty-four members of the family coming along to share the experience. Malcolm and Jennifer believe that the key to a happy and healthy marriage is both working hard at their various responsibilities and making every effort to meet each other’s needs both emotionally and physically. Malcolm also adds that it is important to remember how much you were in love the day before and the day of your marriage and learn to be forgiving. The successful couple celebrated their auspicious 25th wedding anniversary at the Opera House with approximately one hundred and fifty guests and celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary at Toledo House in Mulgoa with over one hundred and twenty lifelong friends in attendance. This year, the couple will celebrate their 58th wedding anniversary. What a wonderful accomplishment and example of young love that lasts a lifetime. FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA Article Submitted by: Rev John Lavender | The Anglican Parish of Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa | Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am

You Cannot Live on Bread Alone New Year’s Resolutions – does anyone make them anymore? It seems as if they are often a bit of fun, a good topic of conversation for Talk Back Radio and various Morning TV shows as people discuss weight loss strategies, exercise programs and set goals for the year regarding diets, the use of time and managing money. Now, here we are in February, and how many of our resolutions are forgotten or broken and we’ve moved on to something else! Yet there is a serious side to it; a desire for change. A desire to put behind us the things of the past; to have things in life turn around for the better. Many of us would like to be more consistent in the way we relate to our friends and family. We’d like better personal habits; eating, sleeping, keeping fit, but perhaps after a while it just gets too hard. As you think about your year ahead, consider what Jesus said in the Bible’s Gospel of Matthew, “Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God.” Jesus is simply saying that while our lives might include many good things; family, work, friends, recreation, even helpful challenges and opportunities, it is impossible for us to live life as it is supposed to be lived if we do not have God and His words and His directions, His wisdom and His promises at the centre of our thinking and planning. Even though it is February, can I encourage you to make a life

changing New Year’s Resolution? Take the plunge and resolve to join us on Sundays at Mulgoa Anglican Church. Here you’ll find a gathering of people from Mulgoa and the surrounding villages, who are working hard to trust and apply the truth of what Jesus has said. As together we discover what it means to trust Jesus more and more, as together we get to know Him, we are able to experience the joy and transforming difference, the confident hope that knowing Jesus makes to our life. We would love to see you so you can know this difference as well.

A Message of Love There’s no occasion quite as special as Valentine’s Day, where for many centuries lovers from all aspects of the world come together to share their endless appreciation for one another. Today this is typically done through the exchanging of small tokens of appreciation, such as chocolates, flowers or even jewellery. In fact, it is estimated that each year, over 1 billion cards are purchased solely for Valentine’s Day gifts. The heavily celebrated occasion that takes place on the 14th of February each year, originally began in the year 496, as a religious celebration where the red rose, symbolic for love and passion, was given to show countless affection. The day has been celebrated in a variety of different cultures, mostly popular in western society and is also celebrated in China, France and various locations on the map. Whilst Valentine’s Day may not be celebrated by everyone, one thing is for sure on the big day..... it’s a day that holds a significant and valuable message of love and acceptance. WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH Article Submitted by: Lyndon Rumsey | P: 4774 1476 M: 0417 174 455 W: warragambabaptist.org.au | Sunday Service: 9:30 am

Pastor’s Corner The Bible tells of a woman who was caught in the act of committing adultery. In Bible times, a person committing adultery, would be dragged before others and stoned to death. In this case the woman is dragged through the streets, publicly humiliated and thrown at the feet of Jesus. The Teachers of the Law and the Pharisees are seeking to trap Jesus into saying something contrary to the law, so they can accuse Him. They ask Jesus, “Teacher, the law of Moses commands us to stone such women. Now what do you say?” Jesus does not directly answer them, instead he bends down and begins to write on the ground with his finger. They become frustrated with Jesus, so they press him further for an answer. Jesus rises and says to them “If any of you is without sin, let him be the first to throw a stone at her.” Knowing that the Bible says, everyone sins, the group goes away, leaving Jesus and the woman on their own. Jesus asks the woman, “Where are those that condemn you?” “No one Sir”, she replies; Jesus goes on to say, “Then neither do I condemn you, go now and leave your life of sin.” Jesus is not condoning the woman’s act of adultery, but forgiving her and calling on her to change her ways, to leave her life of sin. The same offer is made to you and me, The Bible says: “If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness. (1 John 1:9) We too, are offered a second chance, to change our lives and follow Jesus Christ. My prayer is that you will know the forgiveness that comes from Jesus. U

Local Rotary Supports Drought-Devastated Country Towns

Rotary is a great social organisation, and sometimes we carry out a project which provides a huge amount of satisfaction. In December, members and friends of Wallacia-Mulgoa Valley Rotary visited a pair of NSW country towns which are being drastically affected by the big drought – Rylstone and Kandos, located a little south of Mudgee. Our Club has ‘adopted’ these towns as part of a broader project of Rotary District 9675, which stretches from Sydney and the coast to St Marys and Wallacia-Mulgoa. We all know that farmers in most areas of New South Wales are being devastated by this long drought. But so too are the towns which support them. If the farmers have no money to spend, the local businesses – ranging from produce merchants and farm equipment suppliers to cafes and dress shops – are also suffering or going broke. In Rylstone we found tasty, wholesome meals in cafes and clubs, and had fun buying up big at markets offering local

produce. In opportunity shops, we found an amazing array of items, including some great Christmas gift ideas. We spent all the money we could afford. A local grazier, Gary, showed us around his property. He explained that, although there had been rain in November and some grass (and weeds) had sprung up, unless there was followup rain in December-January, the paddocks would become brown and barren again, which they now are. Standing by his haystack, Gary described how the price of hay had escalated due to its scarcity. Sadly, they see little sign of hay offerings from the big bush charities. When hay is offered for the taking, it is all too often claimed by those who have the least need, while the neediest farmers are often too proud to ask. As Gary was pulling out a handful of hay, his fellow Rotarian warned, “Step back fast, Gary” and a brown snake slithered past where Gary had been standing. We have sent several thousand dollars to the Rotary Club of Rylstone-Kandos to distribute to those with the most need. A donation of $500 will supply a farm household with domestic water for six months. Our donations have been generously supplied by the Luddenham Show Committee, Luddenham church markets, a South Penrith building suppliers’ company and our own Rotary Club and its members. At Luddenham Show on the first weekend in March, we will have buckets inviting people to chip in for more support to go to these towns. For information about Rotary, contact Jan 0428 289919, Kay 0416 256506 or Roger 4721 5068 (business). U Rylstone grazier Gary | Image: Jan Bradley. Article: Roger French (President)

GAME REVIEW

..... Arms

Arms is a boxing game. There are 15 characters and each of them are unlike one another. There are a lot of mods in the game and the modes you can play are grand prix, versus and party match. In grand prix mode, you can choose your character (between 1-15) and your combination of arms, then you’re ready to fight. You battle 10 other fighters in a row and if you win all 10 matches, you become the champion. In versus mode, this is the perfect mode to play in if a friend wants to play with you. This is my favourite mode. Basically, there are different places to battle. Instead of playing against the computer, you play against your friends. Party match mode is where you and a few other people battle off like a tournament and the most points win. There are also 42 different arms that you can get to put on your person. Some of them bounce, spin, protect and explode. You can earn coins to buy new arms as you go. I recommend this game to anyone over the age of 8 years. I rate it 8 out of 10 (only available on Nintendo Switch) and THANKS Grandma, it's a top game!

It’s a new year, with thousands of children right across the country lacing up their shoes, putting on their backpacks, showing their best smiles and walking through the gates together with their families to start their first day of kindergarten. It’s a day of nervous anticipation filled with tears and laughter. For the Andrews family, Byron will start kindergarten at Holy Family Primary School in Luddenham, joining his brother Lucas (10) and sisters Leila (9) and Lacey (7), this year. “I am looking forward to Byron starting a new chapter, where he can develop some new friendships and learn many exciting and wonderful things that will help him through life” said Lauren Andrews, Byron’s Mum. Byron can hardly wait to start kindy and join his friends and family at big school this year. He is looking forward to joining and playing with his preschool friends Anthony and Matthew and, of course, his brother and sisters that he loves. When Byron starts at Holy Family Primary School, he will be the last of his siblings to leave the nest to begin his school journey. “It will definitely be an emotional day for me as I say goodbye to my youngest being at home. I’ll also be saying goodbye to the end of 11 years of having children at home with me. It will take a bit of getting used to a quiet home from 9-3” Lauren reflected. For now, Byron is happy to share what he would like to do once he finishes school in the future. “I want to be a monster truck driver!” he grinned. “This has been something he has told me many times” added Lauren. “What I like most about the school is the many dedicated teachers who create such a wonderful learning environment for the kids. There is a sense of community and belonging not only for the children but for the families” she finished. U

PARENTS CORNER

Warragamba Preschool Inc.

“If It’s Predictable, It’s Preventable” I don’t know who came up with this phrase, but it’s so true. If everyday (or fairly frequently), you have a kid that does the same thing over and over again. Whether it’s getting angry, teasing her brother, forgetting to hang the towel up after a bath, etc. That’s not a ‘problem’. That’s an opportunity. An opportunity to teach a new skill. What is the child’s skill deficit? And how can you teach him or her to learn a new skill? Now, when I ask parents these questions, the first thing they try to come up with is a consequence for the behaviour. How can I punish the child for that behaviour? But teaching opportunities, are not about making a child feel bad, withdrawing privileges, and creating stress. It’s about the parent-child relationship, connection, believing in the innate goodness and capacity of your child, focusing on the positives, communication, coming up with creative solutions, and collaboration. And at the same time role modelling those same skills. For example, if you want your child to learn to manage his temper, you have to role model being able to calm down when you have strong feelings. To teach any skill well, you have to move from reactive’ to proactive’. The negative cycle of conflict is unhelpful, it clearly isn’t working because it is still a problem. • How can you change the interactions, so that things are calmer and you can focus more on the positive? • How can you reframe your view of the child from ‘naughty’ or ‘bad’ to ‘s/he just doesn’t have the skills s/he needs at the moment’? • What strategies will you use to guide, nurture, support, and encourage your child to learn new skills? Make a plan. Talk to the child about it. Get some agreement. Consider his/her views and ideas. Put the plan into action. Be consistent! Monitor your progress every day, and review your plan after a week. Is the behaviour getting smaller or bigger? What’s working? What’s not working? Tweak the plan and keep going. And remember, that it is not simply enough to teach a child a skill once and assume that s/he can do it. You have to be kindly persistent. You are the adult, and you are supposed to be stronger, wiser, and kind.

Registration Day MULGOA VALLEY FOOTBALL CLUB

Mulgoa Valley Football Club is looking forward to an exciting 2019 season. After forming a new committee last year, the club is refreshed and looking to the future. Supporting the bid for Australia to host the Women’s World Cup in 2020, there is a focus on improving female member numbers and encourages girls and women with an interest in football to register, regardless of skill. They welcome all players, at all skill levels of all ages. If you have ever thought of participating, or signing up the kids, now is the time to join. After receiving a Community Building Partnership Grant in 2018, construction of a new BBQ area has commenced and will be completed for the coming season. This begins their future plans to further improve the club to service the expected growth in the local area. Always welcoming new members and volunteers, the club is excited for future expansion whilst still maintaining the local, family friendly club feel that has been its major drawcard for over 30 years. The club is always looking for sponsors to help with growth, equipment and improvement of facilities. If you have a local business and would like to contribute to your community, contact the club for more information. Building Designs Advice BUILDERS QUOTATION Builder’s quotations are based on the total square metre’s of the house (or additions/extensions) multiplied by the square metre cost. A new home in brick-veneer is charged by a builder on average between $1500 to $2000 a square metre (including plumbing, electrical, PC items etc.) NOT INCLUDING DRAINAGE OR OTHER SITE COSTS LIKE GST. So a new home of 200 square metre’s estimated cost would be between $300,000 to $400,000 + site costs and GST to build ($Aus). The style of a new home is the preference or choice of the home buyer. We as architect/ building designer, can provide the design of space that a family or person needs to feel comfortable and safe within the walls of the home. There are certain rules regarding the design of a home. The home must be safe to live in, structurally sound and comply with regulations and standards. In Australia we have to comply with the Building Code of Australia (BCA 2018) and the Australian Standards Codes (AS).

STYLE OF DESIGN FOR YOUR NEW HOME Most new homes are designed with “the family” in mind. 4 bedrooms are now the norm. The master bedroom has an ensuite with: shower, vanity and toilet, a walk in robe and sometimes also a parent’s retreat area. Today’s bathrooms are bigger in size and more elaborate in layout and design. Double showers (size) spa bath’s, long vanities and toilets that are sometimes incorporated in to the bathroom design or designed as a totally separate unit. Carol’s Mission to Empower Women Three years ago, local resident and photographer Carol Donaldson attended a workshop to learn more about photographing women. The workshop involved having her hair and makeup done before having her portrait taken, something she feared. Little did she know that this experience would empower her to not only overcome her fear but help to create the opportunity for her to now specialise in women’s portraiture, glamour and boudoir photography. “I started my business 8 years ago, after being a keen photographer for nearly 10 years. I had been helping other photographers at weddings and events and started photographing families and babies” Carol explained. The workshop was life changing for Carol. “I really didn’t want to do it, and my own fear almost stopped me from attending the workshop at all. But I did it, I felt what it was like to be on the other side of the camera and I had so much fun. I now bring that fun experience into my own studio” she reflected. Carol’s photography helps clients with their confidence by showing them that they are enough. Every woman is beautiful, and she proves it to them. “Seeing is believing. Whether they are slim or curvy, young or old, we are all just girls”. “Throughout the shoot, I will show my client the back of the camera and there are quite often emotional tears. The client can’t believe she could look so beautiful and sees herself as the world sees her. Her confidence soars and the connection between herself and the camera is even stronger. When they finally see their finished photos, the most common word is ‘wow’ and that’s the part I love” Carol smiled. What Carol enjoys the most about her business is seeing that same transformation in her clients that she experienced. She photographs girls and women from 9 to 90 years of age. Some come to her studio unsure and nervous, often with low self-esteem. Throughout the shoot, they blossom into full confidence and enjoy themselves. “I have a studio wardrobe which the ladies can’t resist trying out as well” she added. Her goal is to turn her business into a full time studio and to continue helping everyday women to see they are enough as they are. HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Paracetamol for Osteoarthritis & Back Pain – How Effective is it? Paracetamol (acetaminophen) has been used in Australia for pain relief and fever since the 1950's. It is safe and effective when taken as directed on the label. Harvard medical school suggests taking paracetamol to provide: • ‘week-long “holidaysâ€? from your Non-steroidal antiinflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)’ as it • ‘Relieves pain without increased heart attack or stroke risk’ or the other NSAID-intake associated health risks. I occasionally see patients who are taking relatively high dose paracetamol for extended periods. A recent patient had been taking 4000mg paracetamol daily for over 3 years for knee pain, yet the patient rated her knee pain at 8-9 out of ten. Another recent patient with ongoing high levels of pain was taking the same 4000mg dose of paracetamol daily, plus Mobic 15 mg daily, Endone 5mg (tid) & Lyrica 75mg (bid) for back, glut and leg pains, also for an extended period. Both patients still had considerable pain even on medications. This is common. While Paracetamol, when used appropriately remains an excellent medicine, there are however some facts from the medical literature that patients should consider and talk to their doctor about when taking longer term higher dose paracetamol for pain relief. The Australian Therapeutic Goods Administration advises Australians taking paracetamol to: 1. ‘Always follow the directions on the label. 2. Take the recommended dose. 3. Don't take paracetamol for more than a few days at a time unless specifically advised to by a doctor or pharmacist’ A 2015 Systematic review and meta-analysis in BMJ concluded that “high qualityâ€? evidence suggests that paracetamol: 1. ‘Is ineffective for reducing pain intensity or improving quality of life short term in people with low back pain, 2. paracetamol provides a significant, but not clinically important, effect on pain and disability in the short term for hip or knee osteoarthritis, 3. adverse events, serious adverse event, or study withdrawal was similar to placebo, 4. resulted in patients being nearly four times more likely to have abnormal results on liver function tests - the clinical importance of this effect is uncertain’. This increased rate of abnormal liver function tests certainly suggest that acetaminophen may negatively affect the liver. Indeed, acetaminophen toxicity in the US, has replaced viral hepatitis as the most frequent cause of acute liver failure. A

recent Medsacpe article on Acetaminophen toxicity states that a single ingestion of 7,500mg -10,000 mg, represents the minimum toxic dose that poses significant risk of severe hepatotoxicity for adults. This possibly toxic dose is just double the dose taken by the 2 patients above, and so it may not be too difficult for a patient seeking more pain relief to unwittingly take enough paracetamol to lead to acute liver damage. You may be asking ‘is paracetamol safe’? The answer is yes, if the drug is used at correct dose. But risks exist even with safe medicines as shown by a 2001 study on acetaminophen use. At medium to high, or excessively high dose; or if acetaminophen is taken at such a dose for extended periods, risk of adverse events increases. We’ll look at some of these and why they occur next article.

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next few months. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

New Veterinarian Maya joined the Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital team in

January 2019. Maya recently graduated from the University of Sydney with a Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine. Maya lives with two dogs, four cats, two cockatiels and her husband. Maya enjoys hiking, camping and putt putt golf on her days off.

Maternity Leave for 2 Staff Rachel, one of our veterinary nurses, is due February 2019 with her first child. Theresa, one of our veterinarians, is due March 2019 with her second child. We wish them best of luck through this special journey. We are all very excited for the new arrivals! Check out our Facebook page for baby updates. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Welcome to 2019 and the first Latest in Luddenham of the year. Once again we will see so much change and more on the planning for what will happen around the Airport as we see lots of construction already happening. Already this year we are seeing so much work taking place on the Airport Site, with the early earthworks and construction of the Airport Visitor Centre proceeding at full speed, work commencing on a perimeter fence around the site and work on the Northern Road diversion around the Airport. CPB Contractors have been awarded a $170 million contract to upgrade the existing 6.7-kilometre stretch of the Northern Road between Littlefields Road and Glenmore Parkway, work should commence soon. A contractor has also been selected for the last section between Eaton Road and Littlefields Road, they are just finalising some design changes at the Adams Road intersection. It is planned to start construction in mid-2019 and be completed by late 2021. Looking forward to the day when all the Northern Road works are completed. Some sad news last year with the passing of long time Luddenham resident, Margaret Bower who passed away on the 3rd of December. Margaret was an amazing lady who did so much for Luddenham over so many years, she was a Life Member of the Luddenham Show Society and was also involved with the Uniting Church, P & C and most things around Luddenham. Margaret was a champion of our community who moved to

Menangle a few years ago, she will be dearly missed. Work is progressing well for the 115th Annual Luddenham Show that is coming up on the 2nd & 3rd of March, see our ad on page 12, visit the website (www.luddenhamshow.com.au) or follow us on Facebook for all the details! If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com
