Craig’s Bucket List Rally was created when Craig Mason left his family with an unfinished bucket list, before sadly passing away in April 2018 from an aggressive form of stomach cancer at the age of 44. Craig was a lover of the Australian outback and had travelled there many times in the past with family and friends but had never taken his children Emerson and Harry along for the ride. Before he was diagnosed in 2017, he had planned to take his children along the track he had travelled many times before in July 2018, but unfortunately never had the chance. On Thursday the 4th of July, Craig’s wife Sophie, his children Emerson and Harry and 17 of Craig’s friends will leave Settlers Mulgoa and take part in Craig’s Bucket List Rally, a once in a lifetime rally to the Australian outback over 18 nights. Sophie and her team created their own rally, whilst raising money for a charity very close to their hearts, Dreams2live4. Over 8,000kms, 4 Australian states, 18 nights, 10 swags, 1 caravan, 1 camper trailer, 11 adults, 8 kids, 1 baby, a heap of luggage, 20 sleeping bags, 6 4WD’s, loaded eskys, 2 fire barrels, a few of Craig’s hats, 4 GoPros, 1 drone and not forgetting the most important piece of cargo, Craig’s Ashes, will be heading for the trip that Craig never had the chance to complete. The rally will travel from Mulgoa to Albury, Torquay, Kingston SE, to Port Augusta, Maree, William Creek and Coober Pedy, then to Erldunda, Uluru, Alice Springs and Tobemory. It will then head to Birdsville for the Big Red Bash, to Quilpie, Bourke, Dubbo, a stop at Mudgee, then 18 nights later, finish back at Mulgoa. “Craig’s Bucket List trip will be a chance for our children to talk about Craig, laugh about Craig but more importantly to see and experience the things Craig always wanted to share with them but never had the chance to” said Sophie to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. Currently, as a rally team they have raised over $27,000 for Dreams2live4, a charity who make dreams come true for patients who are living with metastatic cancer. Their dreamers have had the devastating diagnosis of cancer, followed by the gut-wrenching news that it has returned. Living with metastatic cancer can be an overwhelming and gruelling battle. Dreams2Live4 empowers these patients to dream and find purpose again and is the only charity of its type in Australia for adult patients. Dreams2live4 create happy memories for the family members who are left behind. “Memories are all our children now have of Craig. By us continuing Craig’s Bucket List these memories will keep his memory alive” ended Sophie. Community Input Sought for Dilly Wanderer Mobile Service Review After 15 years providing outreach services to Wollondilly’s towns and villages, the Dilly Wanderer is being reviewed to ensure that its services continue to meet the needs of a changing community. The Dilly Wanderer is a free mobile service which currently offers an opportunity for people to come together and make new friends, participate in children’s activities and find out about Council programs and local services. Mayor Cr Matthew Deeth said, “The Dilly Wanderer is a vital service that works with residents in outlying areas of our Shire”. “It provides information and referral pathways as well as child development activities and the opportunity for residents to connect socially with other people”. The van currently pays monthly scheduled visits to parks, halls and sportsgrounds at a range of locations across the Shire. With new priority areas emerging, Council is seeking community feedback on the effectiveness of the Dilly Wanderer’s current routes, times and activities and ways they can be improved. You can have your say by visiting https://www.surveymonkey.com/r/dillywanderer or by completing a survey on the Dilly at a location near you. Pastor’s Corner Recently, I read a true story about a young woman named Leah. Six weeks after having her second child, she fell very ill. As Leah’s temperature dangerously soared, her husband took her to their doctor, who immediately had her transferred to hospital. She was diagnosed as having a blocked airway and inflamed vocal cords. The surgeons and nursing staff knew how to treat Leah, as two others were already in the intensive care ward of the hospital with the same symptoms. A week later, Leah was sent home with a strong course of antibiotics. For four months, she continued to have infections and excessive tiredness and wondered if she would ever recover. Her doctor suggested that she should try reflexology, yoga and counselling to overcome her health issues, but her fears of remaining ill continued. Although Leah had moved away from praying to God a long time ago, out of desperation she asked God to heal her body. During the night, she felt a thump in her chest, and she woke up the next morning feeling very different. God had healed her. The Bible has many stories of people being healed by Jesus, “When Jesus came into Peter’s house, he saw Peter’s mother-in-law lying in bed with a fever. He touched her hand and the fever left her, and she got up and began to wait on him. When evening came, many who were demon possessed were brought to him, and he drove out the spirits with a word and healed all the sick”. (Matthew 7:14-17). Do you believe in the power of prayer to heal lives? The God I love is a God that heals and restores both spiritually, physically and emotionally. Just as Jesus was waiting for Leah to speak to Him through prayer, so too He is also waiting for you and I. Will you ask God through prayer? FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Don’t Misunderstand It’s easy to have misunderstandings, especially when translating one language to another. When the giant company Kellogg took their popular breakfast cereal “Bran Buds” to Sweden, they couldn’t understand why it wasn’t selling. They soon discovered that roughly translated in Swedish, “Bran Buds” meant “burnt farmer.” This was a simple but costly misunderstanding! People have many ideas of what it means to be a Christian, but sadly, many are misunderstandings. So what is at the heart of what it means to be a Christian? When the Apostle Paul wrote his letter in the Bible to the Churches in the region of Galatia, that is, in the region of today’s Turkey, in the opening to his letter he gave a clear statement of what is central to be being a Christian. He said, “Grace and peace to you from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ, who gave himself for our sins to rescue us from the present evil age.” At its heart Christianity is about rescue; a rescue achieved for us by Jesus. This will challenge our pride, but the reality is, we are not the people we want to be. We do not love God with our heart, soul, mind and strength, nor do we love our neighbour as ourselves. More often than not we do not have God in the centre of our life and we think more of what is good for us rather than what is good for my neighbour. In Denmark, an airline office advertised: “We take your bags and send them in all directions.” Don’t make the same misunderstanding about Jesus. What foundation are you building your life on? Something taking your life in all directions or the rescue we have in Jesus? We would love you to join us at Mulgoa Anglican Church, on Sundays so you too can enjoy and benefit from the rescue that Jesus brings!

Our Community Vet on the Grow This month brings some exciting news to the local community, with Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital relocating to bigger premises. The much-loved vet has moved from 377 Wentworth Road to 49 Wentworth Road in Orchard Hills and are now just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green, bull-nosed verandah around the front of the building. They even have a concrete driveway and carpark. There is an off-leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. Local customer Graeme from Mulgoa said, “I have been dealing with Camille since she took over Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital. I have always found her to be very helpful and accurate with the diagnoses of our pets. Also, the staff are very helpful and attentive at all times”. Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. They started off with 4 staff and have now grown to 16 staff members and have definitely outgrown their previous premises. This is a wonderful achievement for a successful, local small business. They are so excited and cannot wait for you to visit their large country practice! The staff look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, so please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information, you can find them on Facebook at www.facebook.com/orchardhillsvethospital, visit their website at www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or call them on 02 4736 2027. The District Gazette would like to congratulate Camille and the team at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital on the move to the new premises and wish continued success in the future.

Planning Your Building Project
DRAFTSMAN Draftsmen are not designers but have drawing certifications from either a Technical college or TAFE. Draftsmen are usually employed by either architects or building designers. They draw up architectural design works that have been designed by either the architect or building designer who own the architectural/ building designer’s company. A draftsman will get instructions from these professionals on what and how these architectural designs are to be drawn up. The Quotation Process Because we (John Gersteling & Associates) are Accredited Building Designers, we will take you through the procedure of providing full architectural design services. When you contact a building designer either by phone or through a web site for a consultation, we outline the procedure and stages of architectural design. This procedure is accepted and used by most design professionals. When contacting an architectural designer, an appointment is arranged to visit the proposed construction site of a new home, new additions/extensions or any other construction project. The first consultation on site or in the designer’s office will be a free consultation, where we are receiving the client’s brief (wishes and directions of the project) lasting around 1 to 2 hours. After the first consultation (free), the next consultations will be charged around $120.00 per hour, similar to any other professional services. (See next issue for a continuation of this topic)

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington
There has been a lot of talk about Elizabeth Drive and whether it would be upgraded or if the M12 would be the main road. We can now confirm that the Elizabeth Drive project has been accelerated by funding provided as part of Special Infrastructure Contributions managed by the Department of Planning and Environment. This is to help fund the development of key pieces of infrastructure required to support the growing population. Roads and Maritime Services are investigating options to improve Elizabeth Drive between Cecil Hills and Luddenham. An improved Elizabeth Drive would support the new Western Sydney Airport and the Western Parkland City. The RMS held community consultation sessions last month with the project team and discussed the Elizabeth Drive upgrade proposal and listened to local feedback. Further information can be found online at https://www.rms.nsw.gov.au/projects/ sydney-west/elizabeth-drive-upgrade/index.html or by calling 1800 865303. Feedback is invited until 5:00pm, Wednesday 10 July 2019 via email at elizabethdrive@rms.nsw.gov.au or mail to Elizabeth Drive Upgrade, Roads and Maritime Services, PO Box 973, Parramatta, NSW 2124. Longleys Road and Elizabeth Drive, that will see a new roundabout to be constructed at the new intersection of Elizabeth Drive and Badgerys Creek Road. Last month, Western Sydney Airport entered memoranda of understanding with the Qantas Group and Virgin Australia Group. The MOUs will see the airlines provide insights into designing and planning Western Sydney International (Nancy-Bird Walton) Airport, as well as having early discussions around future Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Australia and Tigerair services using the Airport. Western Sydney Airport Chief Executive Officer Graham Millett said, “the MOU is a tremendous vote of confidence in Sydney’s new international airport from Australia’s airlines”. Following on from last month, I can confirm that Jean and Artie Willmington’s Cuppa for Cancer handed over a cheque to the NSW Cancer Council for $26,436. Well done to all that helped. The Luddenham Cuppa for Cancer has now raised over $381,000. Luddenham RFS are seeking expressions of interest from anyone interested in becoming a volunteer firefighter. No experience is necessary. All training and equipment will be provided. The only requirements are that you are 18 years or older, reside or work in Luddenham (within 2kms of the fire station) and are willing to give it a go! The brigade is made up entirely of local volunteers that respond 24/7, rain, hail or shine to a range of fires (e.g. bush, grass, car, house, shed) and emergencies (e.g. motor vehicle accidents, storm damage, oil spills, assist ambulance). They attend about 120 emergencies each year. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@ bigpond.com. Capturing Wollondilly With the ongoing encouragement of friends and people she didn’t know, Karen soon pulled out and dusted off the unused SLR camera and started snapping. “So, I guess that’s where it started, with the realisation I could take a photo and they weren’t too bad. I entered Wollondilly Council’s Create Wollondilly Art Competition, with a photo and a caption, and won. I have never trained in photography or undertaken any courses and I remain an amateur photographer” she said. With over 2,000 square kilometres of National Parks, dams (Sydney’s water supply), rivers, waterways, lakes, mountains, farmland, rolling hills, plains and all its towns and villages, we are spoilt for beautiful scenery in Wollondilly Shire. “Landscape photography, I’ve discovered, is my forte. Sunsets always remain a favourite subject, but I also love photographing anything with water or a view that showcases just how vast, diverse and stunning Wollondilly is” Karen explained. Her photography is rarely planned, and the camera is always on board when Karen is enjoying a local drive and exploring the backroads. It’s hard for her to choose a favourite location as she is always discovering new ones, however, Wollondilly’s waterways and the Razorback Range always afford wonderful views. So, what’s the secret to taking the perfect photo you might ask? “I think that is different for every photographer. I’m passionate about where I live, so there is no shortage of opportunities for a perfect photo. Take lots of photos, make mistakes, learn and photograph what you are passionate about. Most importantly, do what you love, love what you do!” smiled Karen. For more information, search ‘Kaptured By Karen’ on Facebook.
Local Karen Burgess has a good eye when it comes to photography and capturing the beauty of Wollondilly Shire. What started as an innocent photo she took on her iPhone a few short years ago has progressed to winning the Create Wollondilly Art Competition and to now sharing her beautiful landscape photography with all to see. “I haven’t always been interested in photography. I used to draw mostly. It’s perhaps just the last 4 years or so that I have really started to take photos. It started with a photo I took on my iPhone of a Cawdor sunset. I posted it to social media, and it gained some attention. A local HSC student contacted me and asked if she could use that photo, and two others, for her HSC Art Major Works (she painted them on paint tin lids.) I readily agreed the only provision being that she sent me some pictures of what she had done. She stayed true to her word and I was thrilled with her efforts” Karen told the Mulgoa Valley Gazette.

New Owners for Dam Break Cafe Warragamba’s much-loved Dam Break Café has welcomed new owners to the small business, with locals Steve and Joann Inglis taking over last month. The Inglis’ took over ownership on Tuesday 18th June from Lorraine and Rob, the previous owners. They have spent many years in the food and hospitality industry, having owned café’s, delis and eateries in and around the Southern Highlands. From July, Dam Break Café have extended their trading hours to 7 days a week! They will be opened 7:30am to 4:00pm from Monday to Sunday. These hours will run through to Winter (July and August). Steve and Joann will be keeping many of the favourite dishes on the menu. They also hope to introduce some of their own signature dishes that they have made over the years. They will continue to use Blue Mountain Roaster Coffee, the blend we have all grown to love and won’t be changing. Our favourite local barista and former owner Lorraine will still be working at the café, ready to make your cappuccino, latte or flat white just how you like it, along with the existing staff. “We are looking forward to working in and becoming a part of the local community. It’s refreshing to know that many of our customers are from around here and that we will be able to meet the locals and become good friends. Customers at our previous businesses have been tourists from out of the area, so this will be a nice change” said Steve Inglis. The Dam Break Café is located at 31b Fourteenth Street in Warragamba. Their phone number is 4774 2731. You can also find them on Facebook.

PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com Phil Nunn, an Australian psychologist, says that parenting is like having a rope around your waist. Parenting is all about knowing when to let the rope out and when to reel it in. I take this metaphor a little bit further. The rope around your waist is the relationship you have with your child. No rope = no relationship. Without a relationship there is no letting out and no reeling in. Your child is flailing about at the end of the rope without being hitched to something. That’s a dangerous and scary place for a child to be. In my experience most of these kids look angry. This anger masks hurt, all children want to feel connection and belonging with their primary caregivers. Without a strong and positive parent-child relationship, your child will not listen to you and will not do as you ask. It really is that simple. I believe that having a strong relationship with your child is the most important thing that you can do as a parent. I reckon that building relationship is about 80% of the parenting effort. So, if you are disciplining and punishing your children about 80% of the time, then think about taking an about-turn, and concentrate on relationship instead, and see how that changes things. So, how do you develop a positive relationship with your child? Hugs, touch, care, unconditional love, attention, spending time with them, descriptive praise, nurture, listening to them when they talk, are relationship builders. Things like putdowns, name calling, criticism, teasing, telling them that they are ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’, and swearing at your kids are relationship downers. The best-kept secret to parenting is to spend small amounts of time (a few minutes) regularly throughout the day with your child, especially if she asks for it. Spending small amounts of time listening to your child or supporting him is worth more to your child than spending a half day per week. If you are not doing anything super-important, stop to listen to them or look at what they want to show you. Top up their emotional cup as often as you can. If you are reading this, and you think that your relationship is not that great with your kids, and they are angry at you, not listening to you, and not doing as you ask, then it is not too late. It’s never too late to build a relationship with your child.

LEARN EARN RN N TO T ACTIVE KIDS REBATE – SAVE $100
Have you ever stopped and thought about how rapidly technology is changing in our current world? Implementing the new Digital Technologies curriculum into an already busy classroom schedule can be a daunting task. Schools are feeling the stretch with having to purchase the latest tech gadgets and to keep their teachers upskilled in digital literacy to be able to support their students. In 2019, the students at Luddenham Public School have completed many lessons as part of the Digital Technologies Curriculum, using the expertise of the technology facilitators from Scope It. K-2 students used Minecraft, Google Slides and Scratch block coding to explore the hardware and software components of digital systems. They learnt about storing data, representing information on digital systems and solving problems using a sequence of steps and decisions (algorithms). Students in Years 3-4 explored how data is transmitted between digital systems. This teaches them how to use sequences and decisions, through algorithms, to develop digital systems. In Years 5-6, students learnt digital systems and networks, as they discover how data is transferred and how to design digital solutions using different forms of software. Students have very quickly grasped the new technology skills and have applied these skills in the coding lessons. U Students are learning about new technology| Image Supplied
Wombats Taste Success The Warragamba Wombats JRLFC have had another awesome start to the season, with players, sponsors and supporters enjoying some great junior rugby league. The local club are excited to see so many of their teams putting in 100% effort each week at each game. Four of their players have been selected in the 2019 Under 15’s Initial Representative Squad, two players in the Under 14’s Initial Representative Squad and one player in the Under 13’s Initial Representative Squad. They are very proud of these players, as a club. The Warragamba Wombats JRLFC Committee have been working hard to improve the club and were recently granted $2,800 through the Volunteer Grants Program, which will be used to improve equipment. Their Annual Fundraiser will take place at Settlers Mulgoa in August this year. They are honoured to have rugby league legend Allan (Alfie) Langer as their special guest. This is a night not to be missed and an opportunity for the club, parents, supporters and friends to relax, mingle and enjoy themselves with one of the true characters of the game!

New Social Media Pages for Mulgoa
The people of Mulgoa can now look forward to two new community pages that have started on social media to share local information – Mulgoa Community Page and Mulgoa Buy, Swap and Sell. Mulgoa Community Page, which is found on Facebook and currently has 350 members, was started by two local residents recently. The page was created to give social media users daily information about what is happening in Mulgoa. The page has been designed for the local community to share information together and includes topics such as news, traffic reports, lost and found animals, events and general discussion posts.
It also allows business posts for local businesses on Mondays only. This is an opportunity to promote your business or to recommend a product or service. To become a member, you must first send a request to join to the group’s administration team, before being added. They have a short list of rules they ask that all members read and follow and no bullying is tolerated. The second community page is Mulgoa Buy, Swap and Sell and was started by the same local residents as the Mulgoa Community Page. It is also found on Facebook. The page, which has 55 members, is designed for locals to buy, swap or sell any unwanted items they may have. Local garage sales can also be posted on this page to the community. Likewise, a request must be sent to the group’s administration team to join with rules to adhere to. To find both pages on social media, search Mulgoa Community Page and Mulgoa Buy, Swap and Sell on Facebook. Y Image www.unsplash.com

Who needs to be careful when taking Acetaminophen (paracetamol)? My last article about acetaminophen described how this normally very safe drug may become toxic when taken at higher doses because under some circumstances, liver cells produce a toxic chemical called NAPQI from acetaminophen. Risk for acute liver failure, kidney or lung side effects associated with normal and excessive dose acetaminophen intake is markedly increased when acetaminophen is taken: 1. by people regularly consuming alcohol 2. with some medications 3. during fasting and malnutrition 4. by people over 40 also longer-term intake of just 3-4g paracetamol daily also increases such risk. Alcohol: drinking even moderate amounts (>2 standard drinks daily) of alcohol: 1. directly drains of cellular antioxidant stores 2. increases cell free radical production further decreasing antioxidant stores 3. increases CYP2E1 enzyme levels in liver cells increasing NAPQI production (10-30 fold) So, a moderately strong dose of paracetamol taken by a person who regularly consumes alcohol, may lead to liver cells producing toxic NAPQI levels under conditions of insufficient antioxidants (glutathione) to detoxify NAPQI. Excess NAPQI can lead to liver cell death. In alcoholics as little as 3-6g/day of paracetamol have led to
acute liver failure. Age: As people age liver size decreases & liver GSH production declines, making people over 40 less able to clear acetaminophen and deal with toxic NAPQI and at greater risk of poor outcomes. Fasting: produces deficiency of 3. co-substrates for safe acetaminophen detox pathways (sulfation/glucuronidation) 4. liver GSH (33% reduction) and increases 3. liver CYP2E1 levels (10-30 fold) and thus 4. NAPQI production & risk of liver toxicity Drugs & Chemicals: Many drugs and chemicals increase liver CYP2E1 levels and NAPQI production Schmidt and colleagues (2002) showed that in cases of paracetamol overdosing, concomitant overdosing with: 3. benzodiazepine drugs almost doubled the risk of hepatic encephalopathy and renal dysfunction 4. aspirin increased the risk of a. hepatic encephalopathy five-fold b. death or liver transplantation six-fold So, when you take acetaminophen for pain relief talk to your pharmacist or your doctor first so they can review how much you’re taking and minimise your risk of harm from this normally safe drug.

MEET OUR TEAM
I recently enjoyed some time to travel, not to exotic destinations overseas or in luxurious beach stays in parts of our world that are warmer than home; but instead lovely little hidden gem communities, much like ours. What I discovered above all else, was that many of these amazing little towns had their own version of 'our community news'. We've all picked up the 'local rag' at one time or another when travelling, and like one of our readers recently described, it's like a well-worn pair of old slippers - familiar and 'ohhh so' homely. Here at the District Gazette 'We Live.Love. Local' and will continue our long tradition of bringing the latest local happenings right to your coffee table; like a warm embrace from an old friend. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Do good and good will come to you'
