Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Once again Luddenham had another successful Biggest Morning Tea (Cuppa for Cancer), congratulations to all concerned including Artie & Jean Willmington. The Forum On Western Sydney Airport (FOWSA), recently held a series of successful drop-in community information sessions regarding Western Sydney Airport, the most asked question was about the curfew and why was the airport not going to have a curfew, closely followed by questions regarding zoning and planning around the Western Sydney Airport. The Department of Planning and Environment are currently preparing an interim Land Use and Infrastructure Plan for the Western Sydney Airport Growth Area and it should be released for public exhibition. Also questions about the future of Badgerys Creek Road when Airport construction gets underway. We can now confirm that Badgerys Creek Road should remain open at least until after 2030, it will require some realignment work and some short detours may occur. I have recently heard through social media various rumours of properties being forcibly acquired around the area, (other then what the RMS are taking for the Northern Rd) if anyone has any information please contact me on the email below. Cars Under the Stars has now moved to the 3rd Saturday of each month at the Luddenham Showground, this is a great charity event with lots of old vehicles, music and plenty of food. The next date is Saturday the 21st of July. I recently attended the Western Sydney Aerotropolis Forum to learn about Australia’s newest 21st Century City that is going to be built on the Old OTC and RAAF Base sites on Badgerys Creek Road. This is going to be a massive development that along with the Airport, will change the area over the next few years. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@ bigpond.com. Councillor Matt Gould, Mayor for Wollondilly - Judith Hannan, Wayne Willmington and Peter Shergold Chair of FOWSA at Warragamba Public School.

FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender | The Anglican Parish of Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am 1st and 3rd Sunday @ St Thomas’ Mulgoa A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa 2nd, 4th and 5th Sunday @ St Paul’s Warragamba | A: 4 Weir Road Warragamba
Take Another Look at Church Deep down most people know they really should get to Church a bit more. While many people know this, what sometimes stops them is a fear of the unknown. Either because they haven’t been for a while or haven’t been at all, there is a fear of what Church might be like. Some people think Church is a strange, irrelevant place or they might be worried about standing out or they won’t know what to do or that what happens won’t make sense. At Mulgoa Anglican Church, we firmly believe that what God says to us through the Bible is relevant to every part of our life and relevant to every person, regardless of age or whether you’re male or female, old or young, so we work hard to make people feel welcome. We often ask people who come to our Church, “Why do you stay?” The most frequent answer is because they find the people are friendly, they can understand what is going on and they find what we do is helpful to their life. When people understand that Church is about a group of people encouraging and supporting each other in life, to know and understand God’s goodness, and that it is not about rules and regulations, and that it can even be enjoyable and relaxing, it makes such a difference! One of the great things we find about the people who come to our Church is that many of them have never been to a Church before and although at first they might be nervous, after a few weeks of getting to know us and seeing what we are on about, these people say that Church is the highlight of their week! Each week we want to help people discover who Jesus is and why he is such a significant, fascinating person. Can I encourage you, take the plunge and join us; we’d love to meet you!

What’s Happening at the Warradale Men’s Shed The Warradale Men’s Shed are an important part of our local community and have been for many years. They currently have approximately 30 members from the local area. They meet 3 days a week, which are Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 9:00am to 2:00pm in Warragamba. The first Friday of the month is their regular monthly meeting day, where they plan and discuss past and present events. They then follow this up with a BBQ lunch. The dedicated group participate in community events as they come up, giving them the opportunity to fly the Men’s Shed banner and recruit new members. They also enjoy day trips together, which have recently included the War Memorial in Canberra and a car museum on the Central Coast. They always have a few projects underway, keeping them busy. The major one, which has been ongoing since the beginning of the shed, is the restoration of a 1951 Model Morris Commercial Truck. The group also repair old and damaged furniture, make minor bird traps, have a thriving vegetable garden and fruit trees for the green thumbs in the shed. “The Men’s Shed has become more than a group of blokes that come together to do woodworking and hobby projects. It’s more a social activity, where we can share any personal health issues amongst ourselves, more so than with relatives or spouses” said Terry Atkins of Warradale Men’s Shed. “One of the most important aspects of Men’s Sheds is when a man retires, he has at least 50 years’ experience in work and life. That’s a lot of information that can be shared with others in the shed” Terry added.

Warragamba Inclusive Play Space Coming Soon! footpath along the Fourteenth Street side of the play space” she said. The $1.4m inclusive play space is supported with $350,000 from the Federal Government through Angus Taylor MP, Member for Hume, and the Hon Dr John McVeigh MP, Minister for Regional Development. A further $350,000 from the NSW Government’s Office of Open Space and Parklands, part of the Department of Planning, and supported by the NSW Minister for Planning and Housing Anthony Roberts, was secured by the Touched by Olivia Foundation towards the project. $10,000 was contributed by Member for Wollondilly, Jai Rowell from the Community Building Partnerships Program, along with a further $19,000 that was raised from community fundraising activities. Wollondilly Shire Council will manage the funding for the remainder of the project. The play space will be called “Livvi’s Place” and will feature a large climbing net, a wheelchair accessible carousel, a flying fox, swings, water play, musical items, a changing place amenities facility and much more. Council is planning for the new play space to be ready for use in December 2018. Those who are interested in keeping up to date with the project can follow ‘Friends of Livvi’s Place Warragamba’ on Facebook.
Jack of all Trades
For many of us, learning to play one musical instrument in our lifetime would be a big achievement. For local resident Josh Pennell, you can add eight instruments to that list, making him one incredibly gifted musician! The 24-year-old began playing at the tender age of just 8. The instruments he currently plays are guitar, bass guitar, drums, mandolin, piano accordion, piano and tin whistle. If that’s not enough, he’s also learning to play the bagpipes on top of all of that. “I’m fully self-taught in every instrument I play. I had school music classes growing up, which did help. I do recommend lessons though, as they get you up to scratch a lot more efficiently” explained Pennell. His favourite or ‘go-to’ instrument is the guitar, as it’s the most versatile and one that he can always fall back on, particularly when he is laying down the roots to a new song or getting the fundamentals. “It’s also very therapeutic to switch off and jam out. Some people go dancing and some play sports. I play guitar” he added. Pennell’s musicianship doesn’t end there. He has been the member of several bands, each time playing different instruments. He played lead guitar in the pop/punk band ‘When They Fall’, before making the transition to drums with ‘Authority Downfall’, where they performed gigs in Sydney and released an EP. He describes his best musical achievement to date as filling in for mandolin/ bouzouki/banjo player Adam Kenny for the Celtic folk/punk band ‘The Rumjacks’, playing a handful of shows on their East Coast of Australia tour. Growing up, it was big successful rock/metal bands like Metallica and Led Zeppelin that influenced Pennell. These days, it’s more individuals than bands that inspire him, “Frankie McLaughlin - The Rumjacks frontman is a big influence for my music. Also, Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters as he’s much like how I would like to be as far as versatility and just being so cool and down to earth”. After a break from music, the young father would like to find another band to start or join in the future. He’s keeping his options open, with anything from bluesy honky tonk country right through to heavy metal. “If you have a genuine love for your instrument and really knuckle down and Josh Pennell playing with The Rumjacks at Penrith Gaels persevere - you will get there, every time” he ended. PARENTS CORNER
Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
Fear and Love in Parenting There are two base emotions – fear and love. How do fear and love play out in your parenting? Fear-based parenting views the child as “bad”. Love-based parenting views your child as worthy of your love, time, and attention. Fear-based parenting views the child as “manipulative and attention seeking”. Love-based parenting recognises that all behaviour arises from a need (physical, emotional, intellectual), and sometimes behaviour is a way of attempting to make a connection with a parent. Fear-based parenting emphasises the need for punishment. Love-based parenting emphasises the need for guidance, education, and relationship. Fear-based parenting seeks revenge or payback for a child’s behaviour. Love-based parenting seeks belonging and connection for the child. Fear-based parenting notices “bad” behaviour. Love-based parenting notices mistaken behaviour. When we move from fear-based parenting to love-based parenting we move from ME (parent’s agenda) to WE (parent and child together). It is no longer us versus them. In fear-based parenting the parent reacts. In love-based parenting the parent responds. In fear-based parenting the child’s feeling are dismissed. In love-based parenting the child’s feelings are acknowledged. Fear-based parenting focuses on the person and love-based parenting focuses on the behaviour. Through fear-based parenting, the child experiences shame, which can last a lifetime. Through love-based parenting, the child experiences guilt, which is short-term. In fear-based parenting, the parent feels shame, blame, and guilt. In love-based parenting, the parent tries to be real. In fear-based parenting, the parent burdens the child with his or her own feelings, demands an insincere apology, and does not apologise for his or her own mistaken behaviour. In lovebased parenting, the parent talks about OK/not OK for the self and child, seeks relationship repair, admits wrongdoing, and role models saying sorry. Fear-based parenting values the child for what he or she does. Love-based parenting values the child for who she or he is. In fear-based parenting, the parent persuades, nags, begs, yells, and hits. In love-based parenting, the parent is comfortable with setting safe limits and boundaries for children. In fear-based parenting, the parent is operating at a head level. In love-based parenting, the parent is operating from a heart level.

From Primary to High School:

How to Ease the Transition
High school is a daunting prospect for many pre-teens ready to embark on the next stage of their schooling. For some parents, the disbelief that their pride and joy is almost a teenager goes hand in hand with the anxiety of them starting high school. If this is you, you can rest assured that you are not the only one experiencing these feelings, with studies showing the transition to high school is an exciting yet critical change that leaves some families overwhelmed by unfamiliarity. Most high schools provide transition programs, in the second half of Year Six, which help to alleviate concerns and ensure that students feel a sense of familiarity and support in their upcoming new environment. Students requiring extra specialist support usually have access to extra transition sessions and important information about each student is shared between the primary and high school. Whilst schools take these measures to ensure a smooth transition, some students and their families remain consumed by the impending change. The good news, however, is that there are ways in which you can assist in preparing your child for high school that are proven to be effective. Here are some practical ways in which you can help ease the transition: 1. Organise for your child to visit the school and become familiar with the environment as well as practicing the route your child will take to school each day. If they are catching the bus, perhaps take a drive to the bus stop and follow the route to and from school. This will reduce anxiety and create familiarity around the school and how to get there. 2. Facilitate opportunities for your child to get to know other children who will also be attending the same school. Seek out other families in the same position and team up – check out to see if there are any existing social groups in the school and get involved. 3. Encourage your child to be more independent by giving them the opportunity to make decisions, manage daily chores and complete homework. They could devise a schedule or timetable with you to follow and then selfmanage the tasks. 4. Listen to your child and give them the opportunity to speak freely about how they feel throughout the process. Communicate any major concerns to either the high school or their current primary school and seek help in supporting your child, if required. Article: Sara Drebber @ www.educatered.com.au

Cars Under The Stars
Wollondilly Library Service Chess
Cars Under The Stars was created to drum up extra business for a pizza shop back in 2015. Barney Kodsy wanted to create an event at night where you could look at and admire classic vehicles that was family friendly, with an atmosphere. He was told it wouldn’t work, and he wanted to prove it could be done. Being family friendly, it offers kids activities like face painting, jumping castles, live entertainment, gourmet food vendors, market stalls and trade stalls. This event has since grown into being one of Sydney’s premier car enthusiast monthly gatherings. Cars Under The Stars became a charity event in early 2016, with the reason being that all of their hard work should go to a good cause. To date, they have donated over $80,000 into 34 charity organisations and families that are in real need. The event will be held on the 3rd Saturday of each month at Luddenham Showgrounds from 5pm to 10pm, next event is 21st July 2018. Barney Kodsy’s background knowledge of the entertainment industry, combined with running two successful businesses and being Club President of KAR NUTZ INC (a not for profit classic car club), has been a great asset with rolling out this event. Being community-based, they are always looking to help legitimate cases for charity. Their success has been greatly due to the fact that they do not tolerate bad behaviour and any form of hooning is reported to the local authorities. Visit or help out at the next Cars Under The Stars, so they can keep making a difference.

Chronic Back Pain - There is a Real Solution! Most people have lower back pain at some point in their lives. Sometimes pain disappears after mild anti inflammatory medication, a little rest, or light massage. But often it stays around and becomes a chronic (long lasting) form of back pain. At best, this type of pain can be an annoying ache that’s a bit better when you warm up. At worst, such pain can be constant & debilitating. Pain may radiate down into the buttocks & legs (known as sciatica). It may radiate further down to the tips of the toes. Sometimes sufferers may experience ‘paraesthesia’s. These are strange feelings including sensations such as tingling, cold, heat or even loss of sensation down into affected legs, feet or toes. Such chronic back problems can stop you working, playing, sleeping, eating, thinking, and can leave you frustrated especially when you can’t get treatment to resolve the issue. Many people go for years without adequate relief. Of course, many different causes can lead to such chronic back pain. Various situations may cause simple but chronic overuse injury to back muscles for example: 1. carrying excess stomach weight 2. pregnancy 3. poor posture 4. continual bending – e.g. brick layers Other situations such as heavy or incorrect lifting may lead to acute back injury. Importantly, once injury occurs, it is one common factor that
sustains the cycle of pain. Here’s how this happens. In both the above situations, injured back muscles in the affected area swell with toxin-filled fluids that have leaked from injured cells. This fluid causes the muscles & nerves in the affected area to become inflamed and painful. The swelling reduces blood & lymph flow to the affected muscles and connective tissue, which locks the tissues into an ongoing cycle of inflammation. The affected muscles also shorten. This can lock the spine into an unnatural position which enhances stress on the area, hinders healing and perpetuates re-injury, leading over the longer term to chronic age-related changes. Exercise may relieve pain, but can sometimes also worsen the problem. In most instances the best solution lies in working muscles using physical therapy thus: 1. Lengthening muscles and surrounding connective tissue 2. Removing the inflammatory build-up in back muscles This type of work allows muscle function & spine position to normalise. Cases of disc bulge or even disc protrusion (the old ‘slipped disc’) can be remediated in this way. Protruding discs begin to retract, scar over and in time, with regular treatment, one can often relieve back pain completely, even in many longstanding cases. The same is true for many chronic shoulder & knee complaints. If you’d like to know more, please feel free to call Andreas at Beautiful Health & Wellness on 02 4777 5264, or 0418 166 269

Mulgoa Rural Fire Brigade’s Latest Recruits
Mulgoa Rural Fire Brigade has recently added 6 new firefighters to its dedicated team of volunteers - Blade Steer, Cameron Herrick, Kyle Beukers, Daniel Timbs, Brad Shaw and Debbie Brown. These firefighters recently passed their ‘Basic Firefighter’ qualification on Sunday, 3 June 2018. This entry-level qualification allows members to attend a variety of incidents ranging from grass to bush fires. Mulgoa started its recruitment drive through their Facebook page back in December 2017, just after the Mayfair Road Fire that started on Christmas Eve of the same year. An information session was held on 16 January 2018, and it was through this session that Cameron, Kyle, Daniel, Brad and Debbie found out more about volunteering with the NSW Rural
Fire Service. Blade joined Mulgoa following in the steps of his father - Mark Steer and uncle - Phillip Steer, who have both been with the brigade for over 30 years. People volunteer with the NSW Rural Fire Service for a wide range of reasons. They can range from wanting to protect their families and friends to wanting to give back to their community. Firefighters are trained to respond to a variety of situations ranging from bush and grass fires to motor vehicle accidents and structure fires. New members are always welcome at Mulgoa. If you are interested in joining the Mulgoa Rural Fire Brigade, send a message through their Facebook page or alternatively stop by the station on either Tuesday night’s (from 7pm) or Saturday afternoon’s (from 1pm) to speak to one of the members. As July sets in, so does the snow over the mountain and it sure does send chills right through you! I must admit, Winter is my favourite season. You can't beat a homemade soup, by the fire wearing your fluffy socks, cosy and warm. When I was much younger, I recall being responsible for bringing the chopped wood into the house from the shed. I would often grizzle about this task, I also remember all the splinters and heavy work in doing so. Somehow, those memories don't dull my love for Winter, in fact they bring a smile to my face of treasured memories of days gone by. True to the old adage, "The best things in life are free, treasure them!" Enjoy your Community News.
