Our Champion Ski Racer Silverdale’s Ryan Stanford has had an amazing start to the year, after booking a place in the Australian Ski Racing Team to compete at the 2019 IWWF World Waterski Racing Championships at Vichy, France in September. Ryan won three Australian titles in January, which saw him qualify. The next stage was the selection process for the Australian Team, consisting of six races over five months. Racing at Jindabyne in January, Robe (South Australia) in February, Botany Bay in March and Lake Mulwala (Victoria) made for a busy and tough campaign. At the end of all six races, Ryan finished first outright, securing the chance to wear the green and gold of Australia. “Ryan has an absolutely amazing crew that have been there every step of the way to help him achieve his goal. There is so much generosity from the ski racing community. It is a complete family sport and we highly recommend all families to give it a go. Ryan is extremely grateful to each person that has been there for him, either driving, observing, providing him with a boat, or being a support person along the way” said Sharmaen Stanford, Ryan’s mother. With a hectic training schedule, the Year 11 student has great support from his teachers at Jamison High School. He is also studying at TAFE, attending a sport and recreation course, which involves sports coaching. Ryan can add OzTag at club level and OzTag, touch football and athletics at school level to his sporting achievements, making him one talented teenager! “The Aussie Team have amazing athletes and crews that will ship their boats off to France, so we can go compete against other countries. The race will be tough, as it’s in a canal and something we don’t have here. Our racing in Australia is in varying waters such as a choppy dam, amazing rivers or in the ever changing swell and choppy waters of the ocean” added Sharmaen. As we head towards September, Ryan has set himself one big goal. “My ultimate dream and goal that I have set myself is to become a World Champion in Vichy, France” he finished. The Mulgoa Valley Gazette would like to send our best wishes to Ryan as he prepares to represent Australia later in the year. FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Article Submitted by: Rev John Lavender | The Anglican Parish of Mulgoa P: 47331635 W: anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au | A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am

For Youth High School and being a teenager can be exciting and terrifying! Big things are worked out – who we are, who are our friends, what is life about, what does my future look like? It can be lonely and stressful, but also full of fun and friendships. The Bible has many helpful things to say to teenagers, and to parents trying hard to care for them. For example, from the book of 1 Timothy, “Don’t let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. What wonderful, wise, affirming words for our Youth to be encouraged and live by! It can be tough for our Youth, but Jesus offers hope and assurance. Jesus transforms lives with deep peace, joy and hope, that withstands the pressures, temptations, isolation and anxieties young people can face. At Glenmore Park Anglican Church, caring for High Schoolers, helping them know Jesus and navigate life, is a big priority! We teach Scripture at Glenmore Park High. We run Friday Night Velocity Youth, weekly from 7pm - 9pm for Year 6 to 12, plus meeting with them in smaller weekly Year Groups. We also have 7pm Night Church on Sundays – especially aimed at Youth. A big highlight is our Youth Summit Camp – coming up soon Wednesday 17th to Sunday 21st July at Port

Hacking. The students love it! They return full of enthusiasm to live lives reflecting the Bible verse above, lives with Jesus at the centre, full of hope and growing in godliness of “speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity. Are you in High School? Do you know a High School Student? Take the plunge! Join us Friday, Sunday and at Summit – you’ll be surprised to discover the difference that knowing Jesus makes! Like to know more? Call Miles Stepniewski on 0415890391, or check out the “Velocity Youth Facebook page. We have a great team of leaders and we know that your High School aged students will love it. Doing it for Dad

U Nothing but red dust in sight [inset] A proud achievement for Team Noble Travels | Images: Kellie Noble

Team Noble Travels, made up of local husband and wife Kevin and Kellie Noble, have just returned from the rally of a lifetime last month, driving in the S***box Rally from Perth to Sydney, whilst raising over $8,000 for charity. The S***box Rally started in Perth and travelled to Sydney via Uluru, covering over an amazing 5,000kms in just 10 days. This year was a special one as it marked the 10th Anniversary of the Rally, making it a 10-day event instead of 7 days. Kevin and Kellie were lucky to take a 1999 Holden VT Commodore along as their rally car and it was donated to them. The rules of the rally include that the car must be roadworthy and not be worth more than $1,000. This adds to the whole experience of this amazing event. “We did this rally in honour of my Dad, Terry Atkins, who was a fairly well-known figure around the Warragamba community. Team Noble Travels raised $8,101 from both sponsorship and donations. Overall, this rally raised over $2.6 million for the Cancer Council” told Kellie to the Mulgoa Valley Gazette. So, what was the highlight for the Noble’s during the epic 5,000km journey? “A highlight from the S***box Rally was visiting Uluru and attending the Field of Light dinner there. It was a fantastic experience. Also, meeting and making some new lifelong friends who all have their personal reasons to do the rally. The rally is a major fundraiser for the Cancer Council”. “This was our first rally and definitely won’t be our last! We were honoured to be able to participate for such a great cause. We would like to thank all the sponsors and those that donated for supporting us” Kellie ended.

WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH Article Submitted by: Lyndon Rumsey | P: 4774 1476 M: 0417 174 455 W: warragambabaptist.org.au | Sunday Service: 9:30 am

Pastor’s Corner I read recently about an incident where his wife was having lunch with a friend at a local restaurant. On arrival his wife stepped out of her car, saw her friend was waving to her and saying something. But the wife could not hear a word, because a jackhammer was pounding away, only a few feet from where she was. She walked towards her friend, who as it turned out, was just saying hello, and the two entered the restaurant. When it came time to leave, his wife couldn’t find her keys. She looked in her purse, on the floor, in her friend’s car. Finally when she went to her car, there they were. Not only were the keys in the ignition, the car was running. It had been running the entire time she and her friend were in the café. Often our lives are so busy, too distracted, by the noises around us, to notice what is going on around us. Family, friends or neighbours may be struggling with life; depression, sickness, financial problems, loneliness, whilst we care about them, we may be just too busy to help. Take time to reach out to those around you, to show love, forgiveness and generosity to others. Do you have a relationship with God? Or is God just something you know about? Perhaps you are leaving finding about God for another day, when you have more time. Jesus told us “I tell you the truth, no one can enter the kingdom of God, unless they are born again.” John 3:3. Now physically we can’t be born again , but spiritually we are born again, when we ask Jesus to be the Lord of our lives. My prayer is that each of us will find time building a relationship with God.

Warragamba Play Space Back on Track Due to ongoing concerns with the construction of the Warragamba Inclusive Play Space, Wollondilly Council has stepped in and is now taking a direct approach to the management of the construction works. Council looks forward to facilitating the completion of this very exciting project and is still working towards a mid-year opening. Acting CEO Michael Malone said, “The decision to pursue other options to complete the Play Space has been a difficult one; however, we believe that this is the best way forward to deliver this important project”. “Our goal is to create an exceptional facility for the Wollondilly community”. The inclusive play space has been designed according to the principles of inclusive play, along with feedback received from community engagement activities. Once complete, the play space will feature a large climbing net, a wheelchair accessible carousel, a flying fox, swings, water play, musical items, a changing place amenities facility and much more. As Council takes the construction process forward, they will be updating the project page which can be found on their website www.wollondilly.nsw.gov.au.

May Gibbs Exhibition

WHAT'S COOKING

Lamb Shank Soup

Ingredients 2 teaspoons extra virgin olive oil 2 large (700g) French-trimmed lamb shanks 1 large brown onion, finely chopped 1 carrot, peeled, finely chopped 2 celery sticks, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 teaspoons cumin seeds, crushed 2 teaspoons brown mustard seeds 2 teaspoons sweet paprika 1 teaspoon ground coriander 400g can diced tomatoes 400g can chickpeas, rinsed, drained 500ml (2 cups) Massel chicken style liquid stock 500ml (2 cups) water 100g trimmed silverbeet (about 1/2 bunch), chopped Natural yoghurt, to serve (optional)

It’s 100 years since May Gibbs’ much-loved bush babies found their way into the homes and hearts of Australians. Published just before Christmas 1916, the first of her gumnut baby books was an instant success, and more titles quickly followed. May Gibbs went on to become one of Australia’s most popular and enduring children’s book authors and illustrators. She was also an early environmentalist, urging her readers always to ‘be kind to all bush creatures’. Featuring illustrations of many of her most popular characters, this display explores May Gibbs’ early work, her influences and inspirations, and the working process she followed through her career. Come along to the free exhibition and make your very own May Gibbs gum nut hat or create a memorable gum leaf bookmark. The exhibition will be at Wollondilly Library, Picton from Tuesday 11 June through until Wednesday 26 June. Don’t miss the opportunity to see original May Gibbs works at your local Library. Illuminate Wollondilly Shines Bright in 2019

Method 1. Warm 2 cups milk over low heat. When it starts to simmer, add a 50g chopped honeycomb bar and 70g chopped milk chocolate pieces. Stir constantly for 3-4 minutes or until chocolate is melted and well combined. Serve immediately with scoops of vanilla ice-cream, if desired.

Picton hosted its largest event of the year last month, with the rejuvenated Illuminate Wollondilly Festival attracting thousands of visitors throughout the day and night. This was the fifth year of the popular arts and cultural festival, which was bigger and brighter than ever. Building illuminations showcased many of the historical buildings in Menangle Street and St Mary McKillop Lane, the evergreen tree featured projections of senior’s portraits, and the Stonequarry Creek Bridge and St Marks Church were lit up for the event. Some of the highlights this year included a Waste to Art Competition and Exhibition featuring artworks made of recycled materials, a Silent Disco, Neon Putt Putt Golf, the Kids Carnival, live music performances, and of course the fireworks display at 9:00pm. Mayor Matthew Deeth said, “This is a fantastic event for Wollondilly and shows just how much our community, towns and villages have to offer”. “The collaboration and teamwork of volunteers, local businesses, community groups and sponsors has once again done our community proud”. “I would like to thank all our partner sponsors for their participation and all the staff from Wollondilly Shire Council who worked tirelessly to bring this event together” he said.

Planning Your Building Project

BUILDING DESIGNERS Building Designers are professionals. They have Diploma’s or Certification from either a Technical College, TAFE or University course Degree. Credible building designers are members of a State or National designers groups such as the “Building Designers Association of Australia” (BDAA) and have a commitment to achieve professional development points, to stay up to date with all the latest planning, designs and product developments within the construction industry. There are also different levels of Building Designers. In NSW, designers can apply for the highest level of recognition by applying and receiving the “Accreditation” certificate by submitting design projects and being judged on knowledge of architecture design and construction. A designer that has achieved the accreditation certificate can use his full title of “Accredited Building Designer”. This level of building design has been recognised by the NSW Planning Department. For example, only accredited building designers and architects can design “Child Care Centres” in the State of NSW. (See next issue for a continuation of this topic)

Find Your Inner Peace There has been some exciting health and fitness news for Wollondilly Shire recently, with new business Warragamba/ Silverdale Meditation and Yoga starting and now running classes in the local community. Vanessa Kum Jew and Claire Eva Turunen have come together, beginning the meditation and yoga business in April this year. Their classes are held on Mondays at Silverdale. “The business was started from a call by the community to fill these needs and they wanted something local run by locals. Both of us are passionate about teaching people to find peace in the chaos our lives can bring, so we were very grateful for the opportunity and interest from our local community” said Vanessa and Claire. Vanessa has run group and individual meditation classes for many years for both adults and children from home, under The Essence Within. She writes all her own meditation scripts and personalises them to the wants and needs of each group. Claire started her yoga journey five years ago. Yoga gives her positive benefits in both mind and body, which she can now share with her students as a Yoga Teacher. Classes are run every Monday evening at Silverdale Progress Hall, with yoga from 6:30pm to 7:00pm followed by meditation from 7:00pm to 7:30pm. The cost is $25 for both classes or $15 for just one class. There is an 8-week option of $180 if you pay upfront, saving you $20. It is also $15 for children aged 8-14 years for both classes. Casual visits are welcome. For more information about Warragamba/Silverdale Meditation and Yoga, you can find them on Facebook. Making Friends in the Playground Having friends at school is a pivotal piece in the ‘happy at school’ jigsaw puzzle. Children who have positive relationships with peers are more likely to feel safe and happy at school compared to those who struggle to form friendships and feel as though they have little connections or sense of belonging. With the rise of technology and the prevalence of bullying, parents may be concerned when their children are expressing a lack of quality friendships. It is important to teach our children the social cues and skills needed to make friends at school themselves. Here are some simple, yet effective, strategies to make friends: 1. Ask a friend or teacher to introduce you If your child is new to the school, he/she will obviously not know many people on the first day. If they know one person, they can ask them to introduce their friends. This way, your child’s friend circle can grow much quicker. 2. Say hello and smile A joyful smile is the greatest way to introduce yourself to someone. A smile knows no language barrier and is an instant way of saying hello on the playground, in maths class, on the bus - wherever! 3. Volunteer to help Does the school have opportunities for student to be volunteers? Perhaps there is a buddy program or playground equipment and helper roster. Many lovely friendships can form from volunteering with people who are kind and thoughtful. 4. Sit on the buddy bench In some schools, they have a special designated bench seat where children who would like to play but have no one to play with can sit. Other children can then invite these children to join in with their games or offer friendship. This initiative works well for those children who may be shy and have trouble approaching others. 5. Get involved If your child’s school offers different activities at lunchtime, like coding club or a sport, encourage your child to sign up and get involved. Having the opportunity to bond over a shared experience outside the classroom is a great way to make friends. Building friendships can sometimes be difficult but with these strategies, your children will be equipped to make many positive connections with their peers. Winter Well-being As the temperature is set to drop this Winter, it’s time to consider ways to keep warm and stay happy and healthy despite the dreary weather and appeal of staying in bed or on the lounge watching movies all day. With seasonal weight varying from person to person, it is important to be mindful of the food and drink we consume and how many minutes of exercise we get a day, whilst incorporating relaxation or ‘switch-off’ time for our mental well-being. Firstly, one of the best parts of Winter is the opportunity to make and enjoy delicious home-made vegetable soups. Not only are they easy to make, but they can be frozen or kept in the fridge for a few days making it a quick and easy go-to meal that you can access instead of heading straight to the take-out menu. If your family prefers meals with a bit of heartiness, adding lentils or chicken to a simple soup recipe can really fill it out whilst still maintaining, or even adding to, the nutritional value. Keeping active outdoors might not seem like an appealing option when the temperature outside is nearing zero degrees Celsius and we often make excuses (sometime legitimate) as to why we just give it a miss. The great news is that there are lots of indoor fitness activities that we can do, many without requiring much equipment or leaving the house. If you have a treadmill, you can go for a walk or run or if you have hand weights you can do some toning exercises. Sit-ups, crunches, burpees and stretches can all be done in the comfort of your own home with no equipment. If you enjoy Pilates or yoga, there are a plethora of options on YouTube that are free to access. You just need to commit to at least 30 minutes a day. Of course, downtime is important, and relaxation seems to be the easiest during Winter because it often encourages us to slow down but be wary of what you do whilst relaxing. It is so easy to sit down to watch a movie and next minute you’ve eaten a whole packet of biscuits (surely, we’ve all been there). Try to select healthy snack with the occasional indulgence without going overboard. Eat in moderation, try to be active and give yourself the time-out you need. Have a wonderful Winter everyone! Removing the Biochemicals Lurking in your Muscles that cause Spasms & Pain? Continuing on from last month..... Shah etal created an acupuncture needle that allowed them to compare the relative concentrations of 8 key pain upregulating biochemicals in healthy muscle & from muscle containing trigger points confirmed by EMG. The biochemicals measured were TNFι, IL1β, serotonin, bradykinin, substance P, acid (H+), norepinephrine & calcitonin-gene-related-peptide (CGRP). So, what did they find? 1. Measurements taken immediately after inserting the needle into: a. the superficial layer of the muscle (but not into the trigger-point proper) showed that muscle with: i. active trigger points always contained high levels of all pain biochemicals, ii. latent trigger points contained slightly more than healthy muscle

iii. no trigger points (healthy muscle) had lowest levels b. the trigger-point proper, showed levels of muscle CGRP and substance P were: i. greatest for active trigger points, ii. much less for latent trigger points iii. lowest in healthy muscle 2. Needling a muscle’s trigger point significantly reduced the pain producing biochemicals CGRP & substance P afterward The pain promoting biochemicals in muscles with trigger points cause muscle to become hard & swollen with fluid. While this fluid remains in the muscle with all the biochemicals dissolved in it – the muscle remains dysfunctional & in pain. Muscle elongation therapy has been specifically developed to rid muscle, ligaments, tendons & bursa of this fluid to reduce pain & promote healing, so if you’re suffering ongoing musculoskeletal pain come see us at the clinic.

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next month. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current

we are moving, but you won't have to look far to find us!

premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington CPB Contractors have been awarded the $119 million contract to deliver Stage 6 of The Northern Road upgrade between Eaton Road and Littlefields Road in Luddenham (the last section to be awarded). For this project, CPB Contractors will be upgrading 3.6 kilometres from a two-lane road to a four-lane divided road as well as upgrade approximately 2.5 kilometres of local arterial roads and deliver adjustments to public utilities. CPB Contractors were also awarded the contract to deliver Stage 5 of the project between Littlefields Road in Luddenham and Glenmore Parkway in Glenmore Park, with work well and truly underway. This is anticipated to be completed during 2021 and I think we are looking forward to that. There’s been lots of comments with the recent elections and once again Luddenham was split into two electorates; State we had Camden and Mulgoa and Federal saw us in either Hume or Lindsay, where both elections had different boundaries. As a matter of interest, 503 people voted in Luddenham in the Hume electorate with 243 absentee votes that were mostly from Lindsay, making a total of 746 people voting in Luddenham. Another successful Cuppa for Cancer was held in the Hill on the 23rd of May, to another full house and we will let you know more details next month. Special mention to Jean and Artie Willmington who have been running these for many years. They are saying that it may have been their last, but hopefully we can all convince them to do one more. Transmission Line 39 is a 330 kilovolt (kV), single circuit

overhead connection that extends 114 kilometres between the Sydney West and Bannaby substations (Southern Highlands). An approximate 3.2-kilometre section of the line crosses the site of Western Sydney Airport. A new 3.8-kilometre underground cable that generally follows the perimeter of the airport site has now been laid underground. During May, the 3.2-kilometre section of overhead transmission lines and towers have now been demolished. Work is progressing well on the Western Sydney Airport Visitor Centre on Eaton Road in Luddenham. This centre will give the community the chance to watch the airport come to life right before our eyes. Western Sydney Airport Chief Executive, Graham Millett, said the visitor centre will use digital and augmented reality technologies to give the public an immersive experience. “We want the public to be a part of the journey and discover the airport’s story, particularly the benefits it will bring to the region in terms of jobs and opportunities” Mr Millett said. “Floorto-ceiling glass panels will offer a first-class view of the airport construction area. Augmented reality will allow visitors to see exactly where the runway and terminals will be built and what they will look like from the vantage point of the Visitor Centre”. Community and school groups as well as local and international visitors and members of the public will enjoy free access. Also during May, Eaton Road was closed in the middle. Entry is now from each end unless you are going to the Northern Road construction compound. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com. The Travelling Four Meet Melissa, Mum and founder of the travelling four. I’m a master at chasing dreams, collecting memories and adventures, and celebrating the privilege of parenthood with my hubby and our two children. At the age of 40, I’ve also discovered I’m a space nerd (talk to me about NASA and space shuttles and I’ll be your friend forever!). We are a local family who are passionate about exploring this incredible world we live in with our children. From our experiences of travelling as a family over the last 8 years, we’ve discovered how travel expands the hearts and minds of our kids. We’ve also become masters at creating affordable travel plans for our family – the more affordable we can make a holiday, the quicker we can plan the next adventure! It’s my passion to share our adventures (and misadventures) with others– inspiring families and showing them how they can have the same experiences with their children as we’ve had with ours. Are you ready for adventure, laughter and collecting memories with those you love most? Look out for us from time to time in your local Gazette, where I will share with you our tips and stories on affordable local adventures, and travel within Australia and overseas. You can also see more of the travelling fours fun, misadventures and travel plans over at our website www.thetravellingfour.com. Happy adventuring! Y Adventure awaits! | Image Supplied. MEET OUR TEAM

There's no doubt we've hit Winter. I know I've said it before, but Winter is my favourite season. I love the crisp morning air, and wonderful array of soups and stews that grace my dinner table during the season. This month Narelle talks about parenting and self care on page 8. Providing some great guidance on keeping the joy alive while juggling all the balls of busy parents. Don't miss out on our iFly giveaway on page 11. If you've 'ever dreamed of flying' now's your chance! Here at the District Gazette 'We Live.Love. Local'. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Don't just be good to others. Be good to yourself too.'
