First Ever Public Koala Sighting in Silverdale! Local residents had the rare opportunity of witnessing a young male koala in Silverdale last month. In recent times, the community had heard of strange grunting noises, which they originally thought may have been injured kangaroo’s, but soon realised the true source of the strange sounds! Resident, Michelle Allen, had been keeping a close eye on the koala, whose existence was brought to the attention of Marcus Zorich (Koala Retreat, Mulgoa) in February. Michelle says “there has always been talk of koalas in the area and believed there were known colonies on the western side of Warragamba Dam.” After climbing the tree to assess the health of the koala, Marcus could confirm that it was, in fact, a young male, approximately 2 to 3 years old and weighing roughly 2.5 to 3.5 kgs. At first, he hadn’t travelled far between the 9th and the 15th of February, but, by the 16th of February he had left, hopefully heading towards the Sydney Catchment area. If anything, his arrival presents more questions than answers. It is expected that his parents would be approximately 10-20 hectares away. If residents decide to keep an eye out for the young male koala, caution should be exercised. Please do not approach too closely. If you do approach him, ensure that you do not accidentally encourage him to run up an  The young male koala | Image + Article: Marcus Zorich of Koala Retreat, Mulgoa

2018 Luddenham Show a Big Success

The community of Luddenham and surrounds came together for the 114th time to celebrate, compete, laugh and have a chat at the annual Luddenham Show last month, with many a smiling face strolling around the historic grounds. The wet shows of the past number of years were replaced by heat and drought conditions. Despite this, large numbers of very high-quality livestock took home the prestigious ribbons and trophies. Record entries in the arts and crafts section saw the pavilion filled to overflowing with everything from preschoolers finger paintings, beautiful handcrafted saddles, crocheted rugs, woodwork, home cooking, scrapbooking, photography and even homebrew. ‘THE COUNTRY SHOW’ held on to its traditions with events such as sheepdog trials, wood chopping, antique sulky racing and a bull ride, whilst bringing in new attractions to sideshow alley and talent quests. The featured attraction was the amazing HLS trick riding. They travelled all the way down from Queensland, especially to entertain at the show. Young and old alike were on the edge of their seats watching the plucky stunts aboard their galloping steads. Away from the arena, two full days of stage entertainment were headlined by ‘The Cool’ on the Saturday night. Having toured as Diesel’s support act, this band added a bit of rock to the proceedings. One of the most anticipated events was the ever-popular demolition derby, that closed the weekend. With over 10 clapped out old bombs entering the arena, the cheers from the crowd grew as one by one the cars were smashed and bashed out of the contest. The biggest cheer came from many local kids as the last vehicle was left standing, represented by Luddenham Public School. The committee would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone that attended over the weekend, as well as those who entered any of the classes and sections of competition. Huge thanks must also go to the supports and many volunteers who lent a hand, not just over the weekend but in the weeks leading up to the show.  The excitement of the Country Show | Image: JBW Photography

International Women’s Day International Women’s Day is held annually on March 8th. In the spirit of highlighting those women that play important roles in our lives, local resident Brittiney McGill has been nominated by her partner Robert. Robert took the time to tell the Mulgoa Valley Gazette how much of an inspiration Brittiney is to him and those around her because of her dedication to her family and hard-working attitude. We know there are plenty of hard-working, giving and selfless women across our community, we recognise you all (not only) this month and always.  Brittiney with her daughter, Taylah | Image Supplied. FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender | The Anglican Parish of Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am 1st and 3rd Sunday @ St Thomas’ Mulgoa A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa 2nd, 4th and 5th Sunday @ St Paul’s Warragamba | A: 4 Weir Road Warragamba

The Long Weekend that Changes Everything Isn’t it good that we get four days off to reflect on the most important events of history? Good Friday is the day we remember Jesus’ death. Easter Sunday, we celebrate the fact that this very same Jesus rose from the dead. The incredible thing is that Jesus’ death was no accident. Jesus came into our world to die and pay for the consequences each of us deserves for not treating God as God. Jesus’ death does something quite extraordinary – it reconciles us with God. When Jesus died, his death opened the door for any person to have friendship with God; a fresh start in life when they put their trust in Him. Yet it doesn’t stop there. On Easter Sunday as we celebrate Jesus’ resurrection from the dead, we celebrate the fact that Jesus smashed death! It is because of Jesus’ resurrection that you can have a certain hope of life beyond death – a life that the Bible says in the New Testament letter, written by the Apostle Peter, “that will never perish or spoil or fade”, like so many things in our world today. The great news of Easter is that when Jesus died on the cross then three days later rose again, this changed everything. Life for you can be extraordinarily different! Now, you can have friendship with God. Now, by making a decision to follow Jesus, to commit your life to him, you can have

hope and direction. You can know meaning and purpose. You can have peace with God. You can know the sure and certain promise of eternal life. Easter is truly the long weekend that changes everything! At Mulgoa Anglican Church, we not only want to celebrate these magnificent truths but also share them with you! That is why we would love you to join us over Easter (see the details below) - “The Long Weekend that Changes Everything!” from. Pg 1

New Water Refill Stations Launched in Wollondilly

DID YOU KNOW? Warragamba has an outdoor gym! Come and join us at the gym for FREE weekly fitness classes run by a qualified fitness leader Starting from Friday 2nd March 9:00am at Warragamba Recreation Reserve, Warradale Rd (next to tennis courts)

Warragamba outdoor gym is supported by the Wollondilly Health Alliance and the Wollondilly Shire Council

For more information

Five new water refill stations have been installed across the Wollondilly Shire to make it easier to access drinking water in public places and to reduce the use of plastic bottles. Council, in partnership with Sydney Water, is promoting sustainability by encouraging people to refill their water bottles with fresh tap water at the new water refill stations. The stations are located at Appin Park, Warragamba Recreation Reserve, Tahmoor Skate Park, Picton Botanical Gardens and outside Picton Library in Menangle Street. Mayor Judith Hannan said, “This is a great initiative to encourage people to avoid bottled water by using their own refillable bottles.” “The water stations will provide a convenient and safe source of water for people when they are out and about as well as helping our local environment.” Sydney Water removes over one million plastic bottles from waterways each year across their area of operations. Kelly Climo, Senior Advisor at Sydney Water said, “We are delighted to be partnering with Wollondilly Shire Council to provide the community with high quality drinking water in convenient locations.” “We have some of the best drinking water in the world and it’s already filtered by Sydney Water.” “The availability of the water stations will help the family budget of local residents and the environment by providing free water, rather than them purchasing bottled water,” she said. To operate the water station, a button is held down to provide a continuous stream of water to fill the bottles. The stations can also be operated with one hand, to allow for people juggling their bags, children or pets. Most of the stations have dog bowls attached so the furry residents of Wollondilly can also enjoy a fresh drink of water. A feature of the dog bowls is that they fill up as the pet owner places their foot on a button at the base of the station and the bowl slowly raises as the foot is lifted. As a result, the water in the bowl is always clean and fresh.  Senior Advisor Sydney Water - Kelly Climo, Mayor Judith Hannan, one of our young users - Michael Banks (4), General Manager Luke Johnson, Director Infrastructure & Environment Michael Malone, walker and Wollondilly staff member Candace Muzevic and two furry friends | Image Supplied

‘Still A Country Show’ With So Much More! Blending excitement, entertainment, tradition and agriculture, the Camden Show offers two action packed days whilst maintaining the ‘Still a Country Show’ theme, taking place on Friday 16th and Saturday 17th of March. Agriculture is the back bone of Australia, and the Show aims to highlight the last 132 years in a way that celebrates the value of our farmers and growers. “Bring the family out for two big days and nights of family fun to enjoy the displays, demonstrations and competitions” Camden Show Society President Hugh Southwell said. “It’s also a chance to learn more about historic Camden and agriculture, especially Camden’s role in the development of agriculture and where our food comes from. The Show is great value for money particularly with a membership or family day pass.” With a variety of entertainment to please all ages and interests, Onslow Park Showground will explode with colours, smells and sounds of children laughing to the Show rides whizzing around. Some of the Show’s highlights this year include the popular rodeo, bullock team demonstrations, lumberjacks, axe throwing, Eljay Freestyle Show with lots of motorcycle stunts, Noah’s Racing Pigs, Mini Trots, Camp Draft Demonstration and the Team D-MAX Precision Driving Team just to name a few! From early morning to late evening, the Showground is full of things to keep visitors entertained. There are pavilions full of exhibits, a local talent competition, wood chopping, whip cracking, horse and animal shows, Charlie the Brahman Steer, educational and fun displays and the Drover’s Camp for tasty damper and billy tea. Don’t! Stop! No! Quit! Not!

Specialists in:

Kids hear those words all day long. And they quickly learn to tune them out. Ever seen what kids do when an adult yells out “don’t run!” ? They run! So, why don’t parents phrase instructions in a positive manner? Tell the child exactly what we want her to do? Our brains are hardwired to look for the negative, to be alert to any stress or threat, and as a result we speak in a negative way. When parents tell the child what they want them to do, rather than what they don’t want them to do, miracles happen. Kids listen. “Jamie, wash your hands for dinner.” “Put your socks in the washing basket.” “Please put your bowl in the sink.” This is called a ‘start’ instruction. You tell the child what you want him to do. There is also something called a ‘stop’ instruction. You use that when a child has done something wrong. You tell the child what she has done wrong, and what to do instead. Example: “Jamie, you are jumping on the lounge. You have to sit on the lounge.” And you wait quietly for the child to comply. That’s all. No other words are necessary. You don’t need to give the child a 20,000 word dissertation on why jumping on the lounge is a bad idea. You don’t need to yell, cajole, bribe, or threaten. You don’t need to call him ‘bad’ or ‘naughty’. You don’t need to mention that you have caught him jumping on the lounge every day since he was two years of age. Save your words. Paying lots of attention to mistaken behaviour will guarantee that you will get more off it. With consistency, your child will get it. If he doesn’t comply you can issue a consequence that is related to the mistaken behaviour. In the example above, it would be to sit on the floor for a few minutes. Taking the iPad away isn’t related to jumping on the lounge. If you want to know more, check out Triple P on the Resourcing Parents website or online.

Things are already happening in 2018 with an updated announcement regarding the M12 Motorway. After a corridor route was announced in November 2016, the Greater Sydney Commission and the Western Sydney Parklands Trust shared their early plans for future land use in Western Sydney and the Parklands. As the identified corridor directly affected those plans, Roads and Maritime investigated changes to the route through the Western Sydney Parklands. More information about this change is available online at http://www.rms.nsw. gov.au/documents/projects/sydney-west/m12-motorway You can have your say at one of the two community information sessions where the project team will be available to answer questions about the preliminary design and access strategy. Stir gelatine mixture into cream cheese mixture with chopped Mars Bars. Fold in cream. 7. Pour half of the cream cheese mixture into crumb crust. Drizzle half of the butterscotch and chocolate sauces over cream cheese mixture. Pull a skewer backwards and forwards through mixture (zig-zag) to create marbled effect. Repeat with remaining cream cheese mixture and sauces. 8. Cover cheesecake. Refrigerate for about 3 hours or until set. Come and Celebrate the Luddenham Easter Festival

Luddenham is a humble place, somewhere to listen to the birds and watch the clouds float by, a place that many of us call home. Although we are no ordinary bunch, we are made to feel most welcome. We know the Posties, the Publicans, the Baristas, the Butchers and our children go to school with yours. We shop local, support local and consider ourselves local. You see us all year round, although may not know what we are about, we reside at the corner of Park Road and Campbell Street. We are the Travelling Showmen of Australasia and not only do we provide fun and laughter for the community, we are part of your community. We all love rides, fairy floss and showbags and what better time of year than Easter to get together, young, old and young at heart to make memories. We know that the Easter Show can be expensive (especially when the bank account is still recovering from the Christmas holidays), so we want to bring the show to you. For the 6th year running, we will have a range of entertainment right to your door step, including rides, games, food and showbags. As a gift from us and our sponsors, there will also be a variety of free activities including an Easter egg hunt, door prize raffle, fireworks (Friday and Saturday at 7pm) and more! There will be no entrance fee plus parking is free and ample! So, do as we do, support local family business, join in the fun and meet some of us. We will be open from the 30th of March to the 2nd of April. See you all there! ď ˛ď€ Come and meet us at the show! Easter festivities for all | Images Supplied by Brenda Richards. Silverdale Road Reconstruction In late February the first stage of the reconstruction of Silverdale Rd started, with Marsh to Ridgehaven Rd being milled out and replaced with a proper asphalt surface, which I’ve lobbied hard for and is a much better outcome then the cheaper two coat seal that was originally proposed. The next stage of the works will be from Ridgehaven to Lewis Street and is targeted to be done sometime between July and September this year. There is still plenty more work to do, but there is now a clear plan in place to progressively fix Silverdale Rd properly and it’s great to see it starting to come to fruition. Koalas in Warragamba/Silverdale In some very exciting news, for the first time in over 30 years a

koala sighting has been officially recorded in the Warragamba/ Silverdale area. The koala is a young male which means that there could possibly be at least 2 other koalas in the area, and possibly a larger colony. Importantly, it appeared that the koala was chlamydia free, and if there is a larger chlamydia free colony it would make it, along with Wollondilly’s other colony at Appin, the only chlamydia free populations in NSW. Council is very keen to find out more about any koalas in the area, and ensure that they are properly protected. The community is asked to report any koala sighting or information they have about koalas in the area to the Wollondilly Koala Hotline on 4677 1100. For help on any council related issues please email me at matt.gould@wollondilly.nsw.gov.au, call me on 0427 936 471 or check out my Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ CrMattGould).

HEALTH MATTERS

Article Written + Submitted by: Andreas Klein Nutritionist + Remedial Therapist from Beautiful Health + Wellness P: 0418 166 269

Autoimmune Back Issues – You May Need To Change What You Eat To Fix Your Back Most of the time when I see patients with back problems, their muscles are invariably tight shortened and inflamed to a degree. They may also have some type of structural issue. Therapy works to reduce tissue inflammation and lengthen affected muscles & connective tissues, allowing tissue to heal and regain normal function. Rate of improvement is an individual thing and depends on things like patient’s age, nutritional status, how long standing the condition is, and the degree of damage. Some recoveries happen quickly some a little more slowly, but most respond well. Some people however do not respond well. There are a variety of reasons for this, but here I want to talk about one reason in particular – when people have ‘back-pain’ due to underlying gut dysfunction. Studies show that gut inflammation is common in patients with chronic spondylarthropathy (any joint disease of the vertebral column). One-quarter of the patients have early features of Crohn’s disease’. Most people don’t realise that the intestines live adjacent to the lower back. So, if a person has immune activation in the gut, this can lead to inflammation in the lower back. A number of mechanisms are at play: 1. Microbes can translocate from your intestines into the blood stream, and move directly into the back tissues. This happens in small numbers i.e. not enough microbes to cause sepsis but enough to cause activation of immune cells resident in back tissue, leading to inflammation and pain.

2. Immune cells resident in the lining of the intestines also become primed and activated to defend against the microbes translocating from the intestines. These activated cells then enter the blood stream and migrate to all areas of the body. Those that move into the back tissues where inflammation is already present fan the flames and exacerbate the pain and inflammation associated with any pre-existing back issues, sometimes causing further damage. Now we have an auto immune issue. In such cases, treatment which normally successfully removes inflammatory materials for back tissues fails to, simply because inflammatory materials build up in the tissues faster than they can be successfully cleared. This happens because there is no letup of microbial translocation and immune cell entry into back tissues from the gut. The only way to heal this type of situation is to make dietary alterations that lead to gut healing. This may mean carefully removing certain trigger foods for a period of time, and adding in certain foods and supplements that activate gut function. Such changes allow the gut to heal, then muscle elongation therapy can be successfully applied to remediate the patient’s back problems. Interestingly the same or similar mechanisms underlie most if not all auto immune conditions and so, appropriate diet and lifestyle changes can help overcome many of these diseases. If you have this type of back issue or autoimmune issues in general feel free to call us at the clinic.

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027 New Veterinarian!! We are still growing!! Yay!! We have employed another Veterinarian to accommodate the growth of the business.

New Veterinarian - Ingrid Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital would like to welcome Dr Ingrid Lliguin to the team. Ingrid grew up in New York City, which made it difficult to have animals, however from the age of four she knew being a Veterinarian was her destiny and managed with birds and turtles until she was able to have her two beautiful dogs Olaf and Meister. Both were brought over from St. Kitts and Nevis (an island country in the West Indies) where Ingrid studied at Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine and graduated with a Doctorate degree of Veterinary Medicine in 2017. She also completed a year of study at Sydney University, in addition, she completed a diagnostic imaging externship at Animal Medical

Centre in New York, pursued her interest in wildlife by working with sea lions at the Brooklyn Sea Aquarium, participating in Safaris at Kruger Park in Africa, spending time at Monarto and Adelaide Zoos, and volunteering in Spay and Neuter programs in both Africa and Costa Rica. Ingrid is interested in all aspects of small animal medicine but most of all has a love for soft tissue and routine surgeries. Ingrid spends her free time with her two crazy pups, visiting different beaches, going on hikes and adventures to explore as much of Australia as possible. Veterinary Nurse - Sheridan is Back Off Maternity Leave Sheridan has been on maternity leave for 16 months and has returned to part-time nursing. She enjoyed her time off with Hayley and is very excited to return to work. New Kennel Hand - Lachlan Lachlan joined the team in December 2017. Lachlan is currently in year 11 at high school He is really interested in agriculture, all things to do with animals and he loves playing sport. He has a dog named Chloe and bird named Bob. Lachlan always looks forward to coming to work to help people and see smiles on faces and he is excited to be part of the team. Check out our website for more information. www. orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. ď śď€ Pets @ Play! | Image: ww.pexels.com

Hotel Wallacia

The Mulgoa/Wallacia area became what was known as ‘a popular country resort’ during the first half of the 20th Century. 12 guesthouses had been established by 1919 and by 1938 there were over 20, including the originally named, Hotel Wallacia, the only remaining guesthouse of that period that is still in operation. The hotel is a classic example of 1930s architecture in a style often referred to as ‘Mock Tudor’ or ‘Interwar Old English’, built in the beautiful countryside. After the devastating 1929 stock market crash on Wall Street that signalled the beginning of the Great Depression, Australia was hit particularly hard with unemployment levels reaching nearly thirty-two per cent at its worst. The building of the hotel would have presumably offered much needed employment to some of the people in the area who had been suffering. It is also thought to have been featured in the 1930s movie ‘The Squatter’s Daughter’ as were many of the local folks including Mabs and Arthur Downes. When WWII broke out in 1939, it was used as the Army headquarters for physics and radio. It was also reportedly the meeting place of The Compass Club, who were a group of women who sent parcels to soldiers at war. During the construction of the Warragamba Dam from 1948-60, wives of workers would come to stay at the hotel and visit their husbands. Over the years, the hotel has changed hands and undergone renovations. Current Licensee, Belinda Williams, has her own history there, having started as bar staff in 2007 and working her way up to Licensee just last year. “I just love the hotelâ€? she said. There are old photos dotted around in the bar, function room and the hotel rooms, reminding people of the past. Williams said they get a lot of people who come to visit with stories to tell, some to celebrate their 50th, even 80th anniversary in the hotel where they were married. The Wallacia Hotel still stands today as a reminder of an important time in the area’s history. ď ˛ The original Hotel Wallacia | Image: Courtesy Penrith City Library Local Studies Collection

Yes, it’s already March! Easter Eggs and Hot Cross Buns have been finding their way onto the shelves since January. The kids have settled in nicely to their 'New Year' school routine, Mums and Dads are back at work, sporting calendars are full and we’re all back to our normal daily schedules. This month we have a wonderful publication full of interesting news, stories and events that are local to you! Here at the District Gazette 'We Live. Love.Local', if you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Now, it's time to put your feet up, make a cuppa and enjoy 'Your Community News' "Don't let a bad day, make you feel like you have a bad life"
