Schoenstatt Shrine Celebrates Golden Jubilee
The Shrine with the golden 50 on the facade | Image: Giovanni Portelli
Fifty years ago, Cardinal Gilroy spoke the following words during his homily at the blessing of the Schoenstatt Shrine on Mount Schoenstatt in Mulgoa on 19th May 1968, “This is a little gem that has been constructed here on the top of this hill. I don’t know whether on the maps of this ‘remarkable municipality’, of this ‘wonderful electorate’ there is any area marked as “Mount Schoenstatt”! But I dare to say that there are few places in the municipality and the electorate that will be so celebrated as this one in the years lying ahead!” The time has come for us to celebrate “this little gem.” The Schoenstatt Shrine has proven to be a “place of grace”, an oasis where people of all cultures and faith backgrounds come to experience the peace emanates from the Shrine and encounter the Blessed Mother who is honoured as the Mother Thrice Admirable. Cardinal Gilroy also noted at the blessing 50 years ago that the Shrine “is going to link Mulgoa, Wallacia, Penrith and all these districts with St Mary’s Cathedral itself. He explained, “You see, St Mary’s Cathedral is at the other end of this sector towards the sea. And now we shall have Our Blessed Lady from the Cathedral and from her Schoenstatt Shrine embracing lovingly all those who live in between. And it is my hope, indeed my firm conviction, that with divine inspiration this shrine will be in future a means of great blessing for more and more people to come.” The Schoenstatt Shrine has truly become a blessing not just for our cont. Local Club Welcomes All Age Ladies Team
Warradale Football Club celebrate their 35th Anniversary this season and began the year with some exciting news that an All Age Ladies team will be representing the Rovers in the local competition, for the first time since 1999. The club was formed in 1983 by three women - Anita Reynolds, Rene Colyn and Jenny Whitehouse. The first team to play was an All Age Ladies team in 1984, as a group of ladies wanted to play for a local club rather than travel to Penrith and Camden to play. The All Age Ladies team are playing in Division 3 and have 18 team members who are mainly from the local area. The team is coached by Cheryl Parsons, captained by Djena Parsons and managed by Alyssa Parsons, making it very much a family affair. The Parsons family have been involved with the club for many years. “Our club currently has girls playing in a range of mixed junior teams from the under 6’s to the under 11’s. An All Age Ladies team
will hopefully give our girls the incentive to continue on with their soccer at a senior level at Warradale, with the confidence of knowing there is a pathway available at our club to go from a junior level to a senior level” said John Letby, President of Warradale FC. “We hope from the success of the All Age Ladies team and continued advertising for girl’s participation in junior teams, we can prosper. The club’s future plans are to have a 50/50 split in mixed junior teams, Under 16 Girls teams and 2-3 senior Ladies teams” added John. Warradale FC has many different sponsorship packages available for any businesses that may want to get involved with them. For more information about the club, you can visit their website at www.warradalefc.com or Facebook page at https:// www.facebook.com/83Rovers. Getting the Right Information We know it is important to get good information in life, even on basic things like which milk to drink or if you should even drink milk at all! We spend hours deciding which car to buy or which school to send our kids, but I wonder, how much time do we spend thinking about Jesus; who he was and what he came to do. Immediately, some will say, “Doesn’t matter” or “Who cares”, but here’s the thing, Jesus said that what you think about him, determines where we spend eternity. That is a BIG thought! But is Jesus right? Is he wrong? How do you know? Jesus also says that by putting into practice what he says, that you will actually be living the best life. Again, is he right? There are big questions, big issues that Jesus brings to the table. Jesus is the man you can’t ignore. A favourite Bible verse of mine is from the book of John; “These things are written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name.” At Mulgoa Anglican Church, we love to introduce people to the real Jesus. The real Jesus, who lived, died, who rose again and who calls you and me to follow him, so that we may know and experience this real life. At our weekly Sunday morning service we spend time getting to know this real Jesus who has transformed the lives of so many people in Mulgoa. We’d love you to join us! Or join us at our partner Church, Glenmore Park Anglican for “Christianity Explained” which answers all these questions and more, Sundays at 5pm for 4 weeks starting 20th May. locals but also for the many pilgrims who visit from interstate and abroad. Many experience a sense of “home” and for this reason, the theme for the Golden Jubilee is, “Mother, your Shrine is a Home for all.” The Schoenstatt Sisters of Mary together with the members of the Schoenstatt Movement are delighted that the Lord Mayor of Penrith, Cr John Thain will join them for the Jubilee celebrations. The celebration will commence at 9:30am on Sunday 20th May 2018 and conclude at 3pm. The celebration will include a presentation, history and blessings of the Shrine and a Jubilee Mass will be celebrated by the Most Reverend Anthony Fisher, Archbishop of Sydney. There will be multicultural food stalls available for lunch and entertainment for children. They look forward to you joining them!

PARENTS CORNER Guest article by Professor Matt Sanders Professor Matt Sanders is founder of the Triple P – Positive Parenting Program. For more information go to www. triplep-parenting.net or http://www.nepeancommunity. org.au/service_category/parenting-programs/
Homework Habits Homework is an accepted part of every child’s schooling. However, it doesn’t have to become a family battle. The key is for parents and children to be prepared. Your child should have a set, regular time for homework that fits in around your schedule and your child’s other commitments such as sport or music lessons. Homework should come at a time after your child has had a chance to relax after arriving home and before they are allowed to play or watch television. Relaxing immediately after school is as important for children as it is for adults who want to wind down after coming home from work. Give your child an afternoon snack and use that time to find out what their homework tasks are, whether they need any special materials for projects, and when it needs to be ready. While children don’t have to have absolute quiet when working, they should have a homework area that has clear table space, is well lit, and is free from obvious distractions (like the television). If your child wants your opinion on how good their homework is don’t feel that you have to make sure the work is perfect before they hand it in. They may feel discouraged if you point out all the spelling and punctuation mistakes. Instead, say something positive about the work and, if you must make corrections, just choose one or two mistakes.

Here Come the Wombats
The Warragamba Wombats J.R.L.F.C are a local club on the rise. An increase in player numbers this season has seen the club field a team in every age group, for the first time in 7 years. With 149 players registered, the wombats are growing! The Wombats currently have 4 Mini Teams (Under 6s, U7s, U8s and U9s), 3 Mod Teams (U10B’s, U11B’s and the U12B’s) and 3 International Teams (U13A’s, U14B’s and U16s Tier). The growth in player numbers and success of last season means they are now one of the top 8 clubs in the Group 6 Country Rugby League. The 2017 season was special, with 3 of their 4 potential competitive teams making the finals. The Under 15/16’s won their Grand Final against Mittagong, whilst the Under 10’s made it to the Grand Final against the Bowral Kookaburras. “The club has grown significantly this year and for many reasons, firstly, the hard work by last year’s committee was amazing with a focus on stability, particularly financially. That emphasis has allowed this year’s committee to focus on growth which means more wombats on the field. In fact, we have grown 36% and this is the first year in 7 years we have fielded a team in
every age group. This was achieved by advertising in the papers, “called” (calling parents that had children previously playing) and providing an atmosphere that truly supported the community. We as a committee are very proud of this achievement and the sense of achievement and family around the community from members is really being felt” said Dwayne Hayes, President of the Warragamba Wombats J.R.L.F.C. The club took a hit this year losing a significant amount of monies in sponsorship and are in real need of sponsors. If any businesses in the community would like to get behind their small country club, they can contact the club President Dwayne Hayes at either president.warragamba.jrl@outlook.com or 0400 581217. The club will be hosting a major fundraiser welcome to all on Saturday 19th of May at the Warragamba Town Hall. There will be trivia, games and great food supplied by Pietro’s. Dirty Solar Panels are Costing You Money After witnessing the proliferation of solar panel installations within the Nepean region, one savvy local now plans to clean up... by helping locals make more from their investment in solar. As electricity costs continue to rise, more and more Nepean locals are turning to solar power installations in the hope that they can dramatically reduce their power bills. The latest Climate Council report reveals there are over 343,000 households in New South Wales now with solar installations, and with the cost of solar dropping by 58% over the past five years, installing solar to save on power costs is a trend that is predicted to have continued growth. Local resident, Ken Bailey, has recently capitalised on the region’s solar boom by joining a nationwide solar panel cleaning network and establishing EcoKleenSolar Nepean. “I was researching about solar panels for myself and discovered that they need a regular clean and inspection program to ensure they are working efficiently. That’s when I realised there was really no one offering this professional service to locals in the Nepean region”, Mr Bailey said. Bosch, a world leader in solar technology, specify in their care and maintenance manual that panels that are soiled or dirty in places should be cleaned on a half-yearly basis. “But you have to take care, though”, said Mr Bailey. “The average home owner should not get up on their roof to clean their panels. Working at heights is risky and we don’t want people hurting themselves.” Mr Bailey said that he was required to undertake specific training to get accredited to work safely at heights and use all of the necessary safety equipment before he was able to commence his business. “It’s also very important to follow the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning procedures or you may void your warranty.” We asked Mr Bailey why panels need cleaning; surely rain was enough to clean them every so often? “Imagine how your car would look if you left it out in the weather for six months. Well, that’s how your solar panels will look as well. Anything preventing sunlight getting into the cells within the solar panels means that they are not performing to their optimum output. That means the build up of dust, dirt, salt, even bird droppings and road pollutants creates a surface layer of grime that needs to be regularly cleaned.” It seems as though the region’s locals are fast learners. Mr Bailey says that as word spreads about how he is helping locals make more from their solar he is seeing a lot more of the region from the rooftops.

IN THE NEWS
Council Welcomes New 40Km/H Rule to Protect Emergency Service Workers Wollondilly Council has welcomed a new rule requiring motorists to slow down to 40km/h when passing emergency service workers and volunteers on the roads. The new rule was announced last month by the NSW Minister for Police and Emergency Services, Troy Grant and will be implemented as a 12 month trial from 1 September 2018. Mayor Judith Hannan said, “Wollondilly Council is pleased to see the safety of our emergency workers given priority on the roads. “We appreciate the dedication of our police, fire fighters and
ambulance officers as well as our many rescue volunteers who serve in the Wollondilly Shire.â€? “They often put themselves at risk to look after others and we want to see them get home to their families at the end of each day,â€? she said. The new rule will strengthen current laws and requires motorists to slow down to 40km/h when an emergency vehicle is stopped on the roadside and has its red or blue lights flashing. The NSW Government will run a public education campaign in the lead up to the trial and will then monitor the safety and traffic impacts over the 12 month period, in consultation with emergency services organisations. ď ˛ Image | www.pexels.com

NSAIDS - How Do They Alleviate Acute Pain? First let’s define acute pain vs chronic pain to see how they differ. The Mount Sinai Journal of Medicine states that acute pain: 1. Is produced by a specific disease or injury 2. Serves a useful biologic purpose (to warn the body that something isn’t right) 3. Is associated with skeletal muscle spasm and sympathetic nervous system activation 4. Is self-limited (stops after the cause is removed and healing has taken place) They have a lengthy definition of chronic pain. Put simply however, ‘chronic pain’ is pain that started but, after an abnormally long time, hasn’t stopped. Interestingly they say ‘chronic pain serves no biologic purpose’ - obviously untrue. Chronic pain serves to tell the sufferer that damage is ongoing & that the cause still needs fixing. So how are NSAIDs valuable in acute pain? Last month we saw how, after damage, a good number of compounds are made by body cells at or near the site of injury. These compounds are released into the surrounds and into the blood stream as a signal to immune and other cells to come in to fight bugs that may be involved, clean up damaged cells & tissue materials, and then enact repairs to the area. One can think of tissue damage being the start-up of (not just one but) many-many giant & complex domino cascades – all at the same time. In technical terms these are known as inflammatory ‘signal cascades’. While damage continues, damage signal
cascades will continue to be started, until eventually (hopefully) the cause of the damage has been eliminated and all damage signals stop. At this point, cells release different compounds that start different cascades that now promote repair. Healing then commences, tissue is repaired & function begins to return to normal. In simple terms, the inflammatory cascade aims to remove the cause of damage first, while aiding mess-clean-up. The inflammatory cascade itself then kick starts the antiinflammatory cascade which aims to repair tissue, returning it to normal function. Pain follows the same format. It begins at or soon after injury triggered by the damage signals, continues during clean-up & repair processes, finally subsiding once healing is complete. NSAIDs do two main things: 1. They prevent the start-up of one major arm of the inflammatory cascade i.e. they stop production of pro inflammatory prostaglandins - chemicals that increase pain 2. They kick-start immediate production of antiinflammatory prostaglandins to lower pain NSAIDs chemicals do this by attaching themselves to enzymes called cyclooxygenase (COX for short). Once attached to an NSAID, a COX enzyme, stops making pro inflammatory prostaglandins & starts making anti-inflammatory prostaglandins instead. This strategy often works very well short term. Next month we’ll see why long-term‌ things aren’t so simple.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington
Work has finally begun on the Sydney Science Park in Luddenham. Sydney Science Park is a $5bn project that will create an internationally recognised epicenter for research and development in the heart of Western Sydney. Set over 280ha, Sydney Science Park will be a fully integrated community that will create more than 12,000 knowledge based jobs, cater to over 10,000 students and be home to over 10,000 residents. This is all happening right here in Luddenham on Luddenham Rd. Last month saw the release of the recommended corridor of land for the Outer Sydney Orbital for a possible future motorway and freight rail line. This has been a long awaited announcement with many residents having concerns on where it would go. It seems like the unaffected residents are happy with the corridors, but the affected residents are not happy, I would urge locals to have their say. Transport for NSW is now seeking feedback on each of the corridors. The consultation period has been extended, and feedback will be received until 1 June 2018. A motorway and freight rail line corridor would provide for a major transport link between the North West and South West growth areas, connecting with the Western Sydney Airport and future employment lands. Drop-in sessions are being held at various locations across the corridors with further information at
transport.nsw.gov.au/corridors. Seems like everything is coming to Luddenham. Western Sydney Airport Co (WSA Co) has announced its shortlist for the Delivery Partner for the development of the airport. I caught up with Mr Paul O’Sullivan the Chair of WSA Co as well as their CEO Mr Graham Millett. Mr Millett, said “interest in the appointment, which will provide project management, planning, design development and construction management services, included a strong mix of local and international consortia”. “We anticipate the award of the contract will be completed mid-year and we expect to see both the Delivery Partner and early earthworks commencing in the third quarter of this year,” he said. The airport will support more than 11,000 direct and indirect jobs during the construction phase and WSA Co and its Delivery Partners will target local employment of 30 per cent for all construction jobs. The short listed parties are: Bechtel Infrastructure (Australia) Pty Ltd - A joint venture of Jacobs Group (Australia) Pty Ltd & Mott MacDonald Australia Pty Limited and Seymour Whyte Constructions Pty Ltd - Laing O’Rourke Australia Construction Pty Ltd - WSP Australia Pty Limited. Also last month, the RFS conducted a Hazard Reduction burn of the bush in between the two Churches on the Northern Road, it was good to see this happen under controlled conditions, thanks guys. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@ bigpond.com RFS Hazard Reduction in Luddenham | Image Supplied

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027
RSPCA Million Paws Walk on Sunday 20th May 2018!! The RSPCA Million Paws Walk really is a dream day out for every dog and doggy lover! Families and their beloved fur babies will join thousands of people all across Australia as we walk together to fight animal cruelty. The RSPCA Million Paws Walk will take place in over 17 different locations across New South Wales in 2018, on Sunday 20 May. The Blue Mountains RSPCA Million Paws Walk will be held at Melrose Park, Katoomba. Registration on the day starts at 9am. The Million Paws Walk is RSPCA NSW’s largest annual event, where 100 per cent of funds raised by participant fundraising, event activities, donations and merchandise sales go directly towards helping animals in need. Funds raised will help care for the more than 33,000 animals who enter RSPCA NSW shelters every year after being abandoned, neglected or surrendered. Your hardearned fundraising will also be put towards keeping the inspectors on the road and making sure they can continue their education and community support programs. So, put on your walking shoes and come down for a day of fun activities, competitions, food, new friends, and of course, a great walk! Even if you don’t have a pooch of your own, we guarantee there will be plenty for you to play with on the day. What better way to spend a Sunday than having fun, hanging out with thousands of dogs and helping animals? Register your attendance and book tickets online at www.millionpawswalk.com.au. Check out our website for more information www.orchardhillsvet.com.au or join us on Facebook. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team.

Happy Mother’s Day on Sunday 13th May
Dear 4 Legged Mum’s, I thank you for the food you bring, and for the little squeaky thing. You make sure someone is home each day, even when you are away. Thank you for my daily plays and allowing me a lazy day. You always bring home things to chew, I am so sorry about your Jimmy Choo. You brush my fur and fluff my bed, and even let me sleep up near your head. You’re my mum in every way, have a joyful Mothers Day! Love from

MEET OUR TEAM
And there you have it, almost 5 months tucked away 'just like that'. We enter this month with Mothers Day serving as a reminder to make magical the moments we have with our Mums, our Nan's, our Grandma's and all those wonderfully positive and inspiring role models that help us through this journey called 'life'. And for those gone too soon, your memories live on each minute, each moment, each day. Now, it's time to put your feet up, make a cuppa and enjoy this jam-packed edition of 'Your Community News' "Inhale the future, exhale the past."
