Warragamba Firefighters Ready to Open Doors to the Community

Happy Mother’s Day

POSITIONS VACANT

to all the Mums & Grandmothers

Firefighters will open the doors to hundreds of fire stations across NSW on Saturday, 18 May for the Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Open Day, inviting people to learn more about Australia’s largest urban fire and rescue service. Warragamba Fire Station will be open from 10am to 2pm, delivering a range of free activities including firefighting demonstrations, station tours and safety presentations. Families can also see fire trucks and firefighting and rescue equipment up close and chat to local firefighters about the critical work they do to keep communities safe. FRNSW Commissioner, Paul Baxter said Open Day was an opportunity to show people that FRNSW firefighters do so much more than fight fires. “Our firefighters do fight fires and save people from burning buildings, but our mission and our capabilities extend far beyond fire response” he said. “From road crashes, hazardous material incidents and natural disasters to urban search and rescue and humanitarian relief, our firefighters are prepared for anything and ready to help anyone, anytime, anywhere”. Commissioner Baxter said Open Day was also a great time to talk to the experts about home fire safety in the lead up to winter. “We see a 10% increase in the number of home fires during the winter months, with more fires starting in bedrooms and loungerooms due to things like heaters and electric blankets” he said. “Come and meet the team that’s prepared for anything on Open Day and learn how to keep your family safe from fire and other emergencies”. FAITH – GLENMORE PARK ANGLICAN CHURCH

Mother’s Day

Life; What is it About? Recently some Senior High School students were surveyed and asked the question, “Have you ever thought about the meaning of life?” While most of them had thought about this, almost half felt that life was meaningless, that it had no purpose. That is terribly sad, that so many young people felt so despairing about life. Yet, it is probably no surprise. As we look around, we can see plenty of reasons why people feel this way; institution after institution has let us down; our banks, our politicians, our leaders. Even our heroes have fallen short. What do you think is the meaning of life? Is life just work, study, school, sport, cooking, cleaning, and mowing the lawns? Is that all there is? Is there something more? Beginning in the month of May, on Sundays at Mulgoa Anglican Church we’ll kick off a series “What is God’s purpose for your life?” In the Bible’s book, Philippians, the Apostle Paul wrote, “I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord, for whose sake I have lost all things. I consider them rubbish, that I may gain Christ and be found in him.” Paul was convinced; the meaning of life is found in knowing Jesus. And this is not just knowing about him but knowing him personally; knowing him in a way that caused Paul to commit his life to him. We have been created with a purpose – to have friendship with God; to know his Son Jesus, and to enjoy life with him, now and forever. My prayer is that you would be encouraged to join us on Sundays for this series with the people who call Mulgoa Anglican Church home, and that in knowing Jesus you too would find meaning in your life.

Illuminate Preparations in Full Swing as Federal Election Date Announced As the countdown begins for Illuminate Wollondilly, which is on 18 May, Prime Minister Scott Morrison joined the festival spirit and announced that the Federal Election will be held on the same day. Acting CEO Michael Malone advised that Illuminate Wollondilly – Festival of Art and Light would be going ahead in Picton as planned, with preparations currently in full swing for what is the highlight of Wollondilly’s event calendar. “The Australian Electoral Commission has not been in contact with Council yet regarding the location of voting venues in the Shire” he said. “We will be liaising with the AEC in regard to this and will update the community as things develop. We hope that after everyone has been out to vote on 18 May, they will head down to Menangle Street for Illuminate”. Now in its fifth year, the reinvigorated Illuminate Wollondilly 2019 is set to delight attendees like never before, with exciting new activities for the whole family and even more awe-inspiring lighting projections. This year there will be several new additions including more illuminated buildings, LED dancers, street performers, a DJ activation truck, a silent disco and neon putt putt. This is in addition to festival favourites; the Lieder theatre fire dancers, Jasmine Brophy the Fire Breather, over 100 market and food stalls and of course, The Mac Kids carnival. The entertainment line up on the Bradcorp Music festival stage features two local country music stars, Missy Lancaster and Jemma Beech, who will be joined by Macarthur Music star and previous voice contestant Luke Koteras. The stage and performing arts area will also welcome a number of local dance schools, school performance groups, and more. At 9:00pm, the family friendly fireworks will go off, sponsored by the Illuminate Wollondilly Festival Premier partner The George IV Inn. Illuminate Wollondilly is a free event and will run from 12:00pm to 9:00pm. In the three days leading up to the festival, local artworks will be displayed in Picton Shire Hall alongside a selection of artisan market stalls, showcasing the rich talent of the area. For the safety of visitors, on festival day a road closure is scheduled for Menangle Street Picton between Colden and Argyle Streets between the hours of 6:00am and 12:00am midnight. St Mary McKillop Lane and the rear car park to Argyle Street will also be closed from 6:00am to 12:00am midnight. U Big day of entertainment | Image: Wollondilly Shire Council

Glenmore Heritage Valley Hosts Round of 2019 NSWVGA Stroke-Play Championships

Pastor’s Corner Recently, one of my students asked me my opinion, concerning the attack on two mosques in Christchurch New Zealand; the attack left fifty people dead and another fifty injured. I responded by asking him, how he felt about the situation. His view was that it was “horrible, senseless that someone would do that to other people. ” (his words) My response to him, was that I share your view, I feel immense sadness for the families of those people. His reaction was one of surprise, because he said, “But you are a Christian Pastor, and the people killed and injured are Muslims”. Did my student think that I would consider the senseless killing of Muslim people to be less important than that of Christian people? In John 3:16 it says “God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” These verses tell me that God loves the world, which consists of people who believe in Jesus; those that follow other types of gods; those that choose to not believe in any sort of god; truthfully Jesus was sent for all mankind. Do you believe in God? The attack was so tragically unexpected, but if you or I were to die today, what would happen? I know that I would go to be with God in heaven. I know this not because I am a good person, but because of God’s grace, that led me to follow Jesus as my Lord and Saviour. Jesus said “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” (John 14:6). Jesus is the only way to find life everlasting. May God grant you peace and blessing, U Image www.pexels.com

The Western Sydney Region Veteran Golfers Association (WSRVGA) hosted the 2019 NSW Veteran Golfers Association (NSWVGA) Stroke-Play Championships recently, at Richmond GC, Glenmore Heritage Valley GC and Stonecutters Ridge GC. Day Two of the event was originally scheduled for Dunheved GC, but when the course was declared unsuitable due to weather damage, the management of Glenmore stepped in to offer their course and turned it out in spectacular condition. Incessant rain brought about a cancellation of Day One at Richmond, with Tournament officials calling an end to the day’s play mid-morning due to flooded greens and fairways. Day 2 at Glenmore saw a field of 138 golfers treated to brilliant Autumn sunshine, with the course in great shape despite days of preceding rain. Eventual Champion John Osborn (Mudgee GC) set the pace on Day 2, finishing two shots clear of the field with a round of 73, ahead of Richard Wood (Cumberland CGC) 75, 2018 champion Ricky Allison (Lakeside Golf Club, Camden) 75, Glenn Rosewall (Pymble GC) 76 and David McClelland (Wyong GC) 76. The battles were just as strong in the lower grades, with five players all within three shots in B Grade, including Karl Stindle (Dunheved GC), whilst Mick Toohey (Wallacia) was leading both the Scratch and Nett Divisions in C Grade. Senior Order of Merit (SOOM) leader Matthew Taylor shot a fabulous 70 on Day Three, one shot ahead of Geoff Cranfield (Long Reef GC) with 71. Osborn dropped back from the pace of his Day 1 form to finish with a 75. His two-round total score of 148 would see him claim the Des Coady Memorial Shield and first place prize-money, just one shot ahead of Cranfield on 149. Matt Kumjew (Hurstville GC) had back-to-back nett scores of 69-69 (138) to claim the Nett title, two shots ahead of David Laing (Dubbo GC) on 68-72 (140). Geoff Yates (Leonay GC) won the Division Two (11-16) Scratch prize with 83-86 (169), Don Holland (Leonay GC) the Division Three (17-36) Scratch prize with 94-94 (188), Lal Jayawardene (Glenmore Heritage Valley GC) the Division Two Nett winner on Day 2; Mick Toohey (Wallacia GC) the Division Three Scratch winner on Day 2, Gordon McConnell (Leonay GC) the Division Three Nett winner on Day 2 and Peter Cromer (Wallacia GC) the Division Two Scratch winner on Day 3. Imagine a world where you could cut your food bill in half. Imagine then being able to pay for other things like schooling, holidays because you can earn income from home. Imagine building an amazing food community in your suburb and supporting local growers and fotodaod manufacturers. The imagining of inexpensive quality food is now a reality with Box Divvy. Partners in life and passionate food community farmers from Wherrol Flat near Wingham, Jayne Travers-Drapes and Anton van den Berg, have partnered with Western Sydney Diabetes Alliance in order to create a fresh food ordering system like no other. Now, in the Silverdale area, local food warrior Jessica Harland has created her own Food Hub with the Box Divvy ordering system. Members share bulk boxes of freshly picked produce and other grocery items, which means by purchasing in bulk they can reduce the cost. They save 30-40% on their food bill. “Box Divvy Silverdale-Taylors began last month on Thursday 18th April. I became a Box Divvy Hubster because I wanted to give my community the best fruit and vegetables as well as support our local farmers” explained Jessica Harland. Box Divvy Silverdale-Taylors delivers to Silverdale, Warragamba and Wallacia. Pick up and home delivery is on Thursdays from the Silverdale Hub. Delivery fees also apply. “Snowpeas and bananas have been the most popular items ordered so far in the local community” said Jessica. Lung Disease doesn’t Discriminate The month of May is Lung Health Awareness Month. Lung disease affects almost 1 in 3 Australians and is responsible for 1 in 7 deaths, however many people tend to ignore the signs and symptoms, often not doing anything about it for far too long. We are all are used to thinking about our heart and skin health, but our lungs are equally important. It’s time we made our lung health a priority as well. This Lung Health Awareness Month, Lung Foundation Australia is urging Australians to stop guessing what may be causing symptoms like breathlessness or fatigue, and to learn how to recognise and act upon the symptoms of lung disease. Most of us never stop to think about our breathing, it’s just something we do. Research shows that almost half (46%) of all Australians rarely or never think about their lung health. Despite this, almost two-thirds of Australians (68%) reported that they have experienced at least one lung related health issue. There are a few simple things you can do to help look after your lung health: • Make your life a smoke-free zone by quitting smoking and/ or reducing your exposure to second hand smoke. • Wear appropriate protective equipment if you work in environments that expose you to the inhalation of dust, gas, fumes or chemicals. • Protect yourself from influenza and pneumonia by having the vaccinations. • Exercise regularly and have a healthy diet. • Practice good hand hygiene to minimise the spread of germs. Mother’s Day is just around the corner and although this is usually a time of celebration, it isn’t always a joyous time for everyone. For those who are not fortunate enough to have their mum around to spoil, spend the day with, call or text, the day can be somewhat challenging and isolating. Thankfully, there is a brand new organisation that supports and assists Australian girls and women whose mums have sadly passed away. Motherless Daughters Australia is a not for profit organisation that was founded by two Victorian women, who had also lost their mum, with the hope of making a difference to the lives of those who experience mother loss. The organisation connects and unites women in the same shoes through a supportive online platform and through events and functions to facilitate new friendships and support networks. There is talk of future plans to extend their supportive reach to sons and fathers. Whilst Motherless Daughters Australia is there to support women through the everyday and life’s major milestones, they know that receiving comfort and support during the lead up to Mother’s Day and on Mother’s Day is also very important and can be very therapeutic. The annual and signature event hosted by the not for profit organisation is a series of pre Mother’s Day High Teas which will run in four major cities this year – one is in Sydney on Sunday 5th May. It’s a lovely afternoon and opportunity to meet and mingle with other motherless daughters during the lead up to Mother’s Day. A chance to talk to those who ‘get it’ and who show the utmost empathy and compassion in a way that is purely indescribable unless you’ve experienced it. Women enjoy a glass of champagne, indulge in delicious food and engage in some of the most uplifting, reassuring and validating conversions whilst honouring their mum and making some special connections. Planning Your Building Project

ARCHITECTS Architects are professionals that have university degrees and are members of the institute of Architects in Australia. These Architects do charge a professional fee but often most of their work are in major cities, high rise buildings, sky scrapers, large commercial and industrial projects such as shopping malls and high rise home units; and most of their work is for expensive development projects. Architects can and will charge 6% to 10% + of the construction costs and will take the project from a greenfield stage to final hand over to clients. A domestic residence of $500,000 would incur an Architect fee of close to $30,000 to $50,000 to design. In some cases this does not include Structural Engineering or other professional service required to meet Council DA and CC (Development Application and Construction Certificate). These types of fees are not within reach of most people who want to live in a well-designed home. These architectural designed homes are often well in the range of 2 to 5 million dollars and more to construct/built. (See next issue for a continuation of this topic)

PARENTS CORNER

Article Written + Submitted by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community + Neighbourhood Services P: 47218520 E: narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au FaceBook: Parenting in Penrith Blog: handsheartsminds.wordpress.com I want to tell you about something I saw on the television a few years ago. It’s a story that demonstrates the difference between parenting through connection and using punitive discipline. It was a reality show made in America. I cannot recall the name of the show, something like “Worlds Apart”. It was a series where an American family would leave their modern, fast-paced, disconnected, frozen dinner every night style of life, and go for a week to live in a remote village overseas. On one of these shows, a family of Mum, Dad, and three children, went to a small and remote village in one of the African nations. The villagers lived a traditional life in every way, in the desert with their cattle. There was one well in the village to provide drinking water for everyone. Somehow, one of the American boys, perhaps about 8 years old, did something to contaminate the drinking water in the well. Thus, the women of the village had to walk with their children and babies many hours to retrieve drinking water in pots on their heads. How do you think the villagers responded to this incident? After the incident, the American parents were very angry and embarassed at their son’s actions. The village chief was a very kind and gentle man. The villagers were very kind and gentle. The chief asked the boy to walk with him. They walked into the desert together. When the chief and the boy returned maybe an hour later, the American parents asked their son what the chief had said to him. The boy said that the chief said nothing and he himself had said nothing but they just walked together. Then the boy broke down and sobbed his heart out. The family asked the chief if that’s how he sorts out problems in the village, and he replied that he takes people for a walk in the desert, saying something like “we go out and come back”. After ensuring their survival needs are met, humans have a fundamental need to belong. In this village, survival and belonging were regarded as the same. Go gently and kindly.

It’s Showtime! The Easter Bunny turned up early for two lucky locals who each won family passes to this year’s Royal Easter Show last month, courtesy of the District Gazette. We received hundreds of entries from our readers across all five publications, who each told us in 50 words what their favourite thing about Easter was. A huge congratulations goes to long and loyal readers Karen Clifford and Chanelle Vella, who both walked away with the WIN! How to Prepare for NAPLAN (it’s not what you think) The very mention of the acronym NAPLAN, which stands for National Assessment Program – Literacy And Numeracy, can evoke a myriad of emotions amongst parents, teachers and students. The controversial series of tests covering skills in reading, writing, spelling, grammar, punctuation and numeracy has been around since 2008 and targets students in year 3, 5, 7 and 9. The results of NAPLAN are designed to drive improvements in student learning and create accountability within schools. Whilst this may be true from the perspective of ACARA (Australian Curriculum and Assessment Reporting Authority), this is not always the perspective and experience of those involved in the process. Parents and teachers have seen a different side to the tests with some schools ‘teaching to the test’ in a bid to gain higher marks in order to market their school as top performing and offering a better education to those which did not perform as well. Some parents have even employed private coaching to encourage their child to achieve better results, creating a culture of extreme competitiveness and a build-up of anxiety amid students. These issues cannot be ignored and whilst parents have the option of withdrawing their children from sitting the test, others are fighting to have it removed altogether. Practically, however, what can we do to prepare our children for this in the best way possible? The answer is simple - remind them of what the tests are designed to do and reduce the stigma and anxiety around the test by placing little importance on their individual achievements but rather focusing on the holistic view of school improvement. If we, as parents or teachers, take a stand and refuse to get caught up in the competitive nature that has evolved from misuse of this test, it will demonstrate the practical use of NAPLAN for taking a snapshot of learning at the time at which the tests were taken. Learning is fluent. Children will have bad days, forget things and fluke things. They will be clever and think outside the square. Some things cannot be measured through a test and some things can. Take NAPLAN with a grain of salt and encourage your child to treat it like any other test they take at school. Remember, it is merely a snapshot. U NAPLAN is conducted in May each year | Image: www.pexels.com. Article: Sara Drebber @ www.educatered.com.au

Warragamba Inclusive Play Space Update Wollondilly Shire Council is concerned and frustrated by the lack of progress on the Warragamba Inclusive Play Space and they understand the community’s concerns about the delivery of this important project. They are in the process of resolving a complicated issue that is delaying onsite works and hope to have this issue resolved in the coming weeks. Their goal remains to open the first stage of the Play Space in June.

Community Grants Program Open Wollondilly Shire Council’s community grants program opens this month, offering grants to local community organisations, community groups and not for profit organisations. The program provides funding towards projects, events and small capital purchases to support community organisations and groups operating within the Wollondilly Local Government Area, for the benefit of local residents. Wollondilly Mayor, Cr Matthew Deeth has encouraged local community groups to check their eligibility and apply. “The support that Council can provide through grants can make a huge difference to local arts, culture, sustainability, recreational activities and events he said. There are five grant categories in this round of funding: 1. Arts & Culture Event: maximum grant $1,000 Events that foster the Shire’s cultural identity, or that provide

an accessible, diverse range of community art and cultural opportunities. 3. Sustainability Projects: maximum grant $500 Projects that support the local environment and assist in making Wollondilly a more sustainable place to live. 4. Leisure & Recreation Activities: maximum grant $500 Activities that provide access to physical and social pursuits to support a healthy and active community. 5. Removing the Biochemicals Lurking in your Muscles that cause Spasms & Pain? I am going to briefly interrupt our series on Paracetamol this month, because I came across an excellent study in the journal of Applied Physiology by Shah etal in 2005, the results of which can really help us to understand what underlies the pain & dysfunction of unhealthy muscle. Unhealthy muscle contains tight, painful areas. Physiologists call these ‘trigger points’, of which there are two types, ‘latent’ and ‘active’. Briefly: 1. a ‘latent’ trigger point is a ‘tight area in a muscle’ that is not painful unless pressed. Pressing leads to pain locally & sometimes also at sites called ‘referral’ points. 2. an ‘active’ trigger point has pain (local and/or referred) that is either: a. present constantly, or b. elicited simply by using the muscle 3. muscles containing trigger points are also usually tight, shortened, weaker, with altered nerve functions 4. Trigger points arise due to acute or chronic muscle overloading

5. If pain from an active trigger point worsens to become a persistent unrelenting deep ache, a person may be diagnosed with ‘myofacial pain syndrome’ By contrast, healthy muscle: 1. contains no trigger points 2. if pressed will yield easily & feel no pain, only pressure. Evidence suggests ‘dry needling’ benefits sore muscles. Inserting a needle into latent or active trigger points will cause the muscle to: 1. contract strongly & suddenly, a reaction called a ‘local twitch response’ (LTR), 2. produce a specific ‘LTR’ electrical signal measurable by an EMG machine. 3. often feel significantly less painful afterward In contrast healthy muscles (no trigger point) produce no LTR or EMG signals. So physiologists can use an EMG machine to confirm if a muscle is unhealthy (has a trigger point) or healthy (none). Read more on this next edition.

PAWS A WHILE

Article Written + Submitted by: Camille Brandt from Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital A: 377 Wentworth Rd, Orchard Hills P: 4736 2027

We are Relocating to Bigger Premises We will be relocating to bigger premises in the next month. We will be located on the same road as we are currently on, Wentworth Road, but just further down the road. The new premises have been renovated to accommodate a veterinary hospital. The premises are huge! There are double brick walls, 3m high ceilings and a green bull nosed verandah around the front of the building. We will even have a concrete driveway and carpark! There will still be an off leash park in the front yard for you and your dogs to enjoy. We can’t wait!!!!! Camille purchased the veterinary hospital business nearly 9 years ago and there has been steady and continual growth of the business in this time. We started off with 4 staff and have grown to 16 staff members. We have definitely outgrown the current premises! We are unsure of the date of the relocation at this time, as there is still some work to be completed. We will let you know as soon as we know. We are so excited, we cannot wait for you to visit our large country practice! We will keep you up to date on Facebook with any news of the relocation date.

Happy Mothers Day Enjoy being spoiled on Mothers Day on Sunday 12th May. We look forward to meeting you and your pets at Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital, and please feel free to pop in anytime and meet the team. For more information check out our Facebook, website www. Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Well, a first for Luddenham with the circus in town. Circuses, for many years, stayed at Luddenham Showground during December, but they did not have any performances. Last month, Webers Circus put on 5 shows that received a lot of great feedback. Also busy at the Showground was the Luddenham Easter Festival, that was very well supported. There is so much work happening on our roads. The Northern Road, either to Penrith or Camden, is now taking about 5 minutes more each way, as well as on Bringelly Road. Construction on the rest of The Northern Road is now getting underway. A new roundabout has opened on The Northern Road near Eaton Road in Luddenham. This is to allow construction vehicles to access The Northern Road diversion around the Airport that is well under construction. Eaton Road has now been closed in the middle and is only accessible from either end. The Sydney Science Park at Luddenham is owned and being delivered by property group Celestino. Celestino Chief Executive John Vassallo said more than 35 companies registered to participate in a planning event last month, including the likes of Hyundai, Bosch and Westfield. “Our intention is that Sydney Science Park will become an internationally recognised epicentre for autonomous vehicles research and development and commercialisation” Vassallo said. Spanning a 280-hectare rural site, Sydney Science Park is a $5 billion project which aims to deliver a centre for scientific research and development in the fields of food, energy and health, along the route of the proposed South West Rail Link. The thinktank, supported by Transport for NSW Smart Innovation Centre, is part of an expression of interest process that aims to deliver autonomous mobility solutions for the sprawling development. Pegged as Australia’s “first smart city”, the greenfield development is expected to become home to more than 100,000 people, with its first residents expected to move in by 2021. TransGrid’s 330kV high voltage transmission power line crosses the airport site (between Willowdene Avenue and Longley’s Road) on structures at the location of the first runway. TransGrid have been relocating the transmission lines underground within the boundary of the airport site. This work is almost done, with the new transition sites now being constructed where the existing offsite overhead transmission line meets the new underground cables. We are expecting the overhead wires to come down shortly. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like, please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@ bigpond.com. MEET OUR TEAM

Fast forward and here we are in May. The weather is cooling down to a crisp and fresh afternoon, almost deeming it necessary to don the bed socks and extra blankets. We've included one of [my] mums most favourite recipes also on page 8, treat Mum this Mothers Day, or like me, get baking and enjoy a slice in her memory. Here at the District Gazette 'We Live. Love.Local'. If you have a local good news story to share we would love to hear from you! Time for a cuppa! Enjoy Your Community News. 'Every new day is another chance to make a change'
