Wallacia’s Fundraising Firies

On Saturday 14th October, five members of the Wallacia Rural Fire Brigade participated in the Fire Fighters Climb for Motor Neurone Disease in Sydney. The team, comprised of Jody Preston (Team Leader), David Bartlett, Justin Donohoe, Matthew SwainBarber and Scott Bulmer, climbed 1504 stairs (98 floors) up the iconic Sydney Tower Eye. And if that many stairs do not sound gruelling enough - they each had to carry twenty kilograms of gear as they did it. According to Captain Jody Preston, though, “this is nothing in comparison to the challenge patients with MND face every day”. Motor neurone disease (MND) is also called amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) as well as Lou Gehrig’s disease. MND is a fast developing, neurological disease. MND frequently starts with weakness of the muscles in the hands, feet or voice. An Inclusive Playspace for the Whole Shire

HYDRAULIC SUPPLIES & REPAIRS Wollondilly Shire Council and Touched By Olivia are about to bring to fruition a community vision that has been years in the making. This Inclusive Playspace is expected to cost around $1.2m and will be a state of the art regional facility. This facility should bring more tourists into the business sector of Warragamba and create new business opportunities for the area. Both state and federal governments have invested in the project and the Warragamba Silverdale community is looking to do its part. As members of this community, the Warragamba All Abilities Playground Steering committee is working to do their part to raise funds - with a ‘Foods of the World Comedy Night’ on Saturday the 4th November in Warragamba Town Hall and a major guessing competition to be drawn on that night. There will also be some great prizes up for auction and raffle on the night. Local restaurants are supplying meals for the event and other businesses and community groups are all supporting in one way or another. From the Neighbourhood Centre to local sporting groups and even the local firies, this community is working to smash out a huge return for our Livvi’s Place. It is envisioned that Livvi’s Place Warragamba will be completed by the end of 2018. This special place will be filled with joy, laughter, friendship and the opportunity for people of all ages and abilities to connect. This place will be known as Livvi’s Place, and while there will be the traditional swings and slides, every element of the playspace design has considered the needs of all members of our community. Wollondilly Mayor Judith Hannan raised $17,000 towards this project at the annual Mayoral Charity event and they are hoping to get close to or even surpass this total. Mayor Hannan has booked her ticket, as has Wollondilly MP Jai Rowell.  Some beautiful Livvi’s Place Warragamba supporters donning Butterfly Wings – The Honourable Angus Taylor MP (Federal Member for Hume), Wollondilly Mayor Judith Hannan and Councillor Matt Gould at DamFest. FAITH – ANGLICAN PARISH OF MULGOA

Article Written + Submitted by: Rev John Lavender | The Anglican Parish of Mulgoa | P: 47331635 W: anglicanparishmulgoa.com.au Service Times: Sundays @ 9.30am 1st and 3rd Sunday @ St Thomas’ Mulgoa | A: 43 St Thomas’ Road Mulgoa 2nd, 4th and 5th Sunday @ St Paul’s Warragamba | A: 4 Weir Road Warragamba

Your First Christmas It is sad when life becomes so routine that special things, things deserving celebration, are largely taken for granted. For many people, Christmas has a danger of becoming like that. What I mean is that, every year, Christmas makes a big splash, but then we move on, hardly noticing it has happened, until next year when we do it all again. And really, it is no surprise some of us feel like this, because it seems as if Christmas decorations and paraphernalia are on sale in the shops earlier and earlier, and it can all become a bit “ho hum, here we go again.” Yet at Mulgoa Anglican Church, we know that the joy of Christmas, the joy of celebrating the coming of Jesus into our world, is always something that should be celebrated. It is something to be enjoyed and something to make a big deal about. We know this because in the Bible, God declares how Jesus came into our world to give us a fresh start with God and a real, sure hope for the future as we put our faith and trust in Jesus, committing our lives to him. At Mulgoa Anglican Church, especially at Christmas, we want to share this message of great joy and hope with everyone in Mulgoa and beyond.

Our Christmas celebrations kick off with the Christmas Gingerbread Extravaganza at Glenmore Park Anglican Church (see the advertisement on this page). These events are incredibly popular so please make sure that you book your place! We would love to see you! We’ll get together to sing Christmas Carols at St Paul’s Warragamba 7.30pm on Sunday 10th. Our fantastic “Carols in the Park” is on again at Blue Hills Oval in Glenmore Park on Sunday 17th December and our Christmas Celebration Services are 9.30am on Christmas Eve at Warragamba and 9am on Christmas Day at St Thomas’ Mulgoa. Watch out for more information on this. But for now, my prayer is that this Christmas, perhaps for the first time, you will be able to really celebrate. Rev John Lavender

WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH

Remembrance Day 2017

Pastor’s Corner At a time, when many people barely know the people that they live next door to, or those who live across the road, I am always encouraged to hear stories about people helping each other out. Jesus told a story of a Jewish man who was travelling on foot from Jerusalem to Jericho. Now this was a difficult and dangerous journey of 21 kilometers with a steep decent about 3,500 feet, on a track that was frequented by robbers. The man was attacked and beaten by robbers, stripped of his clothes, left dying beside the road. A priest came by, saw him, and crossed to the other side of the road. So too a Levite came by, saw him and also crossed to the other side of the road. Later, a Samaritan man came by, now Samaritans were the enemies of the Jews; but the man stopped to help. He bandaged the man’s wounds, placed him on his donkey and took him to a local inn. He gave the innkeeper two silver coins, asking him to look after the man, and he told the innkeeper he would return and pay him if there were any additional expenses. Jesus asked the question, which of these men, the Priest, the Levite or the Samaritan was a neighbour to the injured man? (Luke 10:30-36). Would you have stopped and helped the injured man? Would you run the risk of being attacked, if you stopped and helped? Do you think that it is none of your concern what happened to the man? If the man was a stranger and from a different culture, would that affect your decision? Are you just too busy to get involved? Do you lack funds to help? Whilst it is important that we respect that individual’s need personal space and privacy, should it be at the expense, of being a good neighbour? My prayer is, that we stop, that we take time to consider the needs of others, that our care and concern for others, will make each of us better neighbours. God Bless, Lyndon Image: www.pexels.com

Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP has announced over $500,000 will be invested into road projects within the Mulgoa electorate. The NSW Government is investing billions of dollars in improving major road infrastructure across our city and region. However, we are equally committed to continuing to improve our local road networks. “I am pleased to announce that much needed upgrades to sections of Mulgoa Road and Park Road can now commence after securing this funding”, Tanya Davies said. The upgrading of these roads will go a long way to improving road safety. Mulgoa Road will have 600m of new resurfacing commencing 1.9km north of Littlefields Road and Park Road will have 700m of resurfacing from The Northern Road. “I look forward to the community experiencing a smoother and safer road journey once these road projects are completed”, Tanya Davies said.

PARENTS CORNER

Getting Results It’s natural to want your child to do well at school and some parents use a reward such as money to encourage their children to get better grades. I’ve often heard of parents offering their child money for every “A” on their end of term report card. One of the problems with giving children financial incentives for good end-of-term grades is that the reward comes too long after the effort is made. Rather than waiting till the end of term, it’s much more effective to set up a system of rewards which are brief and frequent and which encourage positive daily habits. These daily habits then build towards an eventual outcome, such as a good homework and study routine. However, you can encourage children to build good study and homework habits without having to resort to offering money. Why not try a reward such as spending time with your child doing an activity they really like? Or you could offer a special treat you know they’ll enjoy. The object is to encourage good routines by giving extra attention and praise or small frequent rewards when they are doing the right thing. When kids are struggling, that little bit of extra attention can encourage them into new patterns of behaviour – and they may end up getting that A after all! An Alternative Setting for Education Home schooling is becoming an increasingly popular educational option in Australia. Under the Education Act 1990, home schooling is education delivered in a child’s home by a parent or guardian. Currently over four thousand children are being home schooled in New South Wales alone with approximately a third of those students living in Western Sydney. There are numerous reasons why parents are choosing this alternate setting as the preferred method for their child’s education. According to the NSW Education Standards Authority (NESA), the top reason for electing to home school is due to philosophical reasons. Additional reasons cited include special learning needs, behavioural, religious, bullying and other non-specified. Regardless of the reasons why parents choose to home school their child, families in this state are required to register with NESA, develop a learning program based on the curriculum and monitor their children’s progress. There are many organisations and support networks available for families who home school; parents are encouraged to connect with other home schooling parents to share ideas and resources, support one another and provide opportunities for children to socialise. Another interesting alternative to regular home schooling that is getting a lot of media attention currently is the concept of ‘unschooling’. This somewhat radical approach operates under the premise of children learning through every day experiences and learning naturally without the conformities of the curriculum. This model of education does not currently meet registration requirements in NSW. If you are considering home schooling your children it is important to consider the positive and negative aspects in order to make an informed decision. As the teacher you will need to be patient, prepared to deal with the possible misbehaviour of your children whilst encouraging them to learn. Conversely, you will get to spend extra time with your children, have a more flexible lifestyle and be able to cater for their individual needs. Home schooling can be very stressful, but it is also very rewarding. This option is not for every family. Parents who are not prepared to make the commitment to be an effective teacher should avoid it.

Wallacia’s Fundraising Firies

MND become progressively disabled. Life expectancy after diagnosis is one to five years, with 10 per cent of individuals living 10 or more years according to MND Australia. The needs of people with MND are complex and differ from individual to individual. The Sydney Tower Eye climb was challenging but the Wallacia RFS team managed to complete the stairs in less than forty minutes. One member, David Bartlett, managed to impressively complete the challenge in just 14 minutes and 42 seconds. Overall the team succeeded in raising over nine hundred dollars. Every dollar raised by the Wallacia RFB team will directly support vital MND research at the Macquarie University MND Research Centre. Macquarie University houses Australia’s largest MND research facility, as well as the MND Clinic which treats 10% of MND patients in Australia. HEALTH MATTERS

Osteoporosis - Hippocrates Was Right! I embarked on the story of osteoporosis as I see so many patients fall into the simplistic yet enticing notion that the solution to their condition is an ‘eat more calcium or Vitamin D’ story, or worse, that ‘a drug that actually disrupts bone regeneration’ may help. Often such simplistic yet attractive interventions may not improve bone health or strength at all, but may in some cases be risking poorer bone and general health. By now we should be able to appreciate that osteoporosis is a diet & lifestyle problem. Good bone physiology depends on having all the right ingredients present to allow bone cells (of all types) to do their work properly. This means having a diet that provides all the protein, vitamins & minerals needed, and a lifestyle that ensures the correct hormonal & physical stimuli for excellent bone maintenance. Now that we have looked at many of these elements one at a time, I wanted to recap what we’ve learned so the picture becomes clear. Calcium is far less important than made out. Our RDA is 1000mg per day, but Thai men & women on 220-361mg per day from veges fish and meats have much lower hip fracture rates than westerners! Calcium supplements raise risk of heart disease. Protein – ‘from food’ has a direct bone building effect (independent of calorie intake), and does not cause bone loss. Protein isolates (supplements) can cause calcium loss. Vitamin K (from leafy greens, fermented foods and natto) make osteocalcin which binds & keeps calcium in bone. Vitamin D (from midday sunshine – 23% of Australians are vitamin D deficient) improves intestinal calcium uptake & reduces loss through the kidneys; makes osteocalcin Vitamin A (from liver & cod live oil) – without it normal bone growth & tooth development don’t occur; makes osteocalcin. Magnesium from foods (Sesame seeds, Brazil nuts, almonds,

green leafy vegetables) optimises: bone crystal shape for strength & response to bone building hormone PTH; activates vitamin D; reduces inflammation. Excess ‘supplemental’ Magnesium may reduce bone strength. Boron (avocados nuts and dried fruits) raises free testosterone & estrogen, so reduces inflammation & increases production of bone building proteins; stops urinary loss of calcium, magnesium & phosphorus; improves intestinal absorption of magnesium and deposition in bone. Potassium (green leafy veges, potatoes, nuts, seeds, legumes, fish) may be the most important foods you can eat - decreases bone resorption increases bone formation, significantly reduces urinary calcium loss. Silicon (Horsetail herb, dates, kidney beans) during growth cross-links collagen and proteoglycans to make the collagen in bone matrix more calcifiable & increases bone strength; facilitates bone formation independent of vitamin D. Exercise - skipping, bounding and depth jumping exercises done 6 days per week for 1 year were effective for reversing bone loss in menopausal women. Doing weights or walking doesn’t show same results!! Salt (added NaCl in foods) causes urinary calcium loss even if calcium intake is high. Excellent diet & lifestyle minimises your chances of chronic disease and having to take the many drugs that cause bone loss. The 2500 year old words of Hippocrates ‘Let food be thy medicine and medicine be thy food’ still rings true & applies to your bones too!

Glenmore Park Town Centre Opening Date Set With construction well into its final stages, and retailer fitouts underway, the additional building of the Glenmore Park Town Centre is close to completion with opening date set for Wednesday 29th November, 2017. The major re-development of Glenmore Park Town Centre includes Coles & Aldi as well as 33 specialty retailers split over 3 levels, this is in addition to the existing building which offers Woolworths and 25 specialty retailers. Glenmore Park Town Centre will be your one stop shopping experience offering over 350 additional undercover car parking spaces. The community can look forward to an alfresco dining precinct overlooking Cheds Town Reserve, featuring Oporto, Enzo’s Cucina & Zambrero. A range of Health & Beauty Services are available to the community including Medi Advice Pharmacy, Tangs Massage, Flawless Laser, Blue Lagoon Nails & Beauty and Thread In Shape. The food court zone will be home to The Coffee Club, Ikura Kaiten Sushi, Wokken Noodle Bar and Empire Kebabs. Another feature of the additional building includes Star Car Wash, conveniently located in the carpark, which will enhance the shopping experience. Additional retailers to be excited about also include a Plus Fitness Gym with 24hr access for customers. Travel, Realty & Financial Services, an independent women’s fashion retailer, as well as a handbag & luggage retailer are also features of the new building. A few months ago, a logo design competition was held for the children of the community, giving the children an opportunity to be a part of something very special. The entries received were fantastic which made it very hard to choose 3 winning entries. Elements of the winning entries were used to create the final logo. The new logo will be featured on both buildings, as one united centre. “Our opening date is set for Wednesday 29th November, with major festivities taking place on Saturday 2nd December. We welcome the community to join us at our opening and enjoy their new & improved Town Centre” Marketing Manager, Giulia Barron, said.

Kitten Adoption - Adopt a Friend for Life!

Cats can live up to 20 years if provided with a loving caring home. Kittens have certain requirements including providing a balanced and nutritious diet which you will need to change to an adult formula after the age of 6 to 9 months. Your kitten needs a yearly vaccination to protect it against diseases. Routine flea and worm medication must also be given. If you are interested in adopting one of our kittens, feel free to pop in for a visit.

Santa Photos With Your Pets

Our Kitten Adoption Program enables us to find homes for stray and unwanted kittens. Each kitten has a health check. They have had their kitten vaccinations, been desexed, microchipped and have a product called Advocate applied, which controls fleas, intestinal worms and heartworm. We also worm them for tapeworms. We have 2 lovely kittens ready for adoption now! The kittens are 3 months old. There is 1 female tortoiseshell colour and 1 black and white male. They have playful personalities and are so much fun to watch when they play together. When you adopt a kitten you are making a long term decision.

Santa Claus will be visiting Orchard Hills Veterinary Hospital during December 2017 to take photos with your pets. Santa will be here from Friday 1st December until Tuesday 24th December 2017, Mon-Fri (9am-7pm) and on Saturdays (9am-12pm). For a $10 cash donation, your Santa photo is presented in a Christmas card, with all proceeds donated to the Guide Dogs NSW. We have Christmas themed props for your pet’s photos (e.g. hats and scarves), feel free to bring in your own outfits.

Mulgoa Postmistress Extraordinaire

‘It’s a poor hen that can’t scratch for her chickens’. These are the words of Elizabeth Fowler, Postmistress of Mulgoa during a 30-year period between 1877 and 1901. She worked hard to make a living for her family after her husband, John Fowler, died in 1881. He was returning from a political meeting in Penrith when he was thrown from his horse crossing Willow Tree Bridge. She was then left with the monumental task of raising and educating their 11 children on her own, the youngest just a baby, back in the days when there were no widow’s pensions or child endowment benefits. Elizabeth held the position from 1877-1892 and then again from 1901-1907. Her daughter, Louisa, began working in the post office when she was 14. Her daughter died giving birth at the age of 21, leaving the baby to be cared for, so the number of children to raise went up to 12. She is described in ‘The Saga of the Fowler Family’, written by Jean Stephens, as ‘a woman of great moral and physical strength’. Stephens explains how she also acted as the local Doctor, Nurse and Midwife, and ‘the majority of infants in Mulgoa and Luddenham were brought into the world by this kind and capable woman’. Generations of the Fowler Family performed postal duties in the Mulgoa and Wallacia Districts for nearly 140 years. It ended when Margaret Fowler retired in December 2015 after 22 years of service at the Wallacia Post Office, which then changed hands and families after 107 years. Elizabeth’s son, John, was appointed Postmaster at Wallacia in 1908. He was the grandfather of Margaret’s husband, Ross Fowler. The extraordinary Elizabeth Fowler was ‘a pioneer in every sense of the word’ wrote Margaret in an account she gave of the Fowler family. Elizabeth died at the age of 92 leaving behind five daughters, four sons, 40 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren and a legacy of hard work and inspiration.

Latest @ Luddenham by Wayne Willmington Last month I had the privilege along with St Marys RSL Sub branch President Ron Blakely, Penrith Mayor John Thain, Mulgoa MP Tanya Davies, Liverpool Deputy Mayor Tina Ayyad, Penrith RSL Sub branch President Mick McConnell, Liverpool Councillor Geoff Shelton and Sue Bishop of Penrith RSL Sub branch, to take part as the Official Party for the collection of soil for the Anzac Memorial Centenary Project, with soil being collected from towns of enlistment from the First World War. Member for Mulgoa, Tanya Davies MP (who organised the collection) led a ceremony at the Luddenham Progress Hall for the NSW Government’s ANZAC Memorial Centenary Project, to recognise and honour the sacrifice of those who fought in the First World War. A sample of soil was collected from the Luddenham Progress Hall to be displayed in a special exhibition space to be installed in the ANZAC Memorial in Hyde Park to mark the 100th anniversary of the end of the First World War. The soil collected will be presented in a plaque with the GPS co-ordinates of the collection site on the walls of the Hall of Service. “The project represents the fact that there was a serviceman that went to the Great War that came from this very suburb, which many of us have a strong connection with, Tanya Davies said.

Also with construction of the Western Sydney Airport getting closer the relocation of cemeteries from the airport site, including the St John’s Anglican and Uniting (Methodist) Cemeteries on Pitt Street. Relocation works have commenced with some of the families moving loved ones to Luddenham cemeteries. I have spoken to some of the families involved and they are happy with how the process is working. The cemeteries were permanently closed on 31 August 2017 and members of the public are no longer able to visit the Badgerys Creek cemeteries. Travelers of the Northern Road will see lots of construction at Penrith & Oran Park ends, the RMS is working on display concept design and the final Environmental Impact Statement for the remaining sections - Mersey Road, Bringelly and Eaton Road, Luddenham (5.5 kilometres) and Littlefields Road, Luddenham (4.5 kilometres) as well as Glenmore Parkway, Glenmore Park (6 kilometres). Luddenham Showground is looking a bit different with the removal of dying and dangerous trees, this was done with Penrith Council advice and approval. If you have an opinion on what Luddenham of the future should be like please email your thoughts or views to willmingtons@bigpond.com we all need to work together to get the best results for the new Luddenham.

Next time I put pen to paper for 'The Last Word', it will be less than 30 days until Christmas. Many of you (like me!) will be frantically preparing their minds ready for the season ahead. I must admit, I am a huge fan of this time of year. The weather is glorious, the landscape is picturesque (especially in our part of the world).... and if you stop for just a moment of your busy day, you can hear the wind blowing, the birds chirping and all kinds of natural beauty that surrounds us! We have a wonderful recipe to kickstart your 'Christmas' spirit on page 10, while our resident Vet Camille steps it up a gear and talks 'Santa Photos with your Pets' on page 16; if the thought of Christmas being so near wasn't already scary enough! 'Being happy is a do-it-yourself project', friends close to me will know just how much these words resonate with me... Enjoy your Community News.
