Mayor Races to Penrith’s Latest Adventure Activity
Source: https://www.facebook.com/LuddenhamRaceway
Mayor Ross Fowler OAM will visit the site of Penrith’s latest adventure venture, Luddenham Raceway which is under construction. “Luddenham Raceway brings yet another thrill seeking tourist activity to Penrith,” Cr Fowler said. When complete Luddenham Raceway will feature two race circuits. Track one is a 600m karting track and a fleet of modern karts. Track two is a 1250m track for driver training and a variety of other motor sports activities. The facility will also feature state of the art timing systems, track safety and lighting systems that have been certified by the Confederation of Australian Motorsport (CAMS). “Penrith is well established as an adventure destination where visitors can sky dive, go whitewater rafting, wakeboarding or get behind the controls of a jet aircraft. Adrenaline junkies will love the ability to race go-karts and participate in motorsport activities.”Construction of the go-kart track is well underway with the road base being laid last month. It is expected the facility will open in the coming months and already generating excitement in social media.

From the Editor Hello July! We have officially crept past the middle of the year! And... it’s TAX time! Coupled with this, is the end of Term 2 for our school friends and the start of a new financial year for our friends in business. Another month passes and I wish I could hit the ‘pause’ button for just a moment. Last month I learned of a dear friend who is facing a health-scare and a long battle ahead. Many of us have friends, family, coworkers and acquaintances facing similar battles. When we face situations like this it brings with it mixed emotions and a shadow of sadness, memories of the past and thoughts of the future. A desire to stop and appreciate all those good times and cherish every single moment that life has to offer. This month, we learn of the impending closure of one of our famous local attractions. I know my kids have visited ‘The Trainshed’ many times over the years, there is no doubt that there will be many a ‘Thomas’ fantatic across our community re-living their many ‘Trainshed’ memories. Read all about it on page 3. Mark Stevenson has some interesting ‘Small Business Finance’ tips to share in Money Matters on page 11. I know I have said it before, but it rings so very true! There are magical moments in ever day, we just have to take the time to see them. Enjoy your community news.

Last Chance for a Ride on Thomas! The Train Shed at Luddenham will sadly be closing for good on Sunday 26th October, 2014. The closure of the popular family attraction is said to be due to the development of Badgerys Creek Airport, as it is on Airport land. Their popular facebook page received many comments and posts following their news. “Don’t miss out! Come and visit soon and avoid the last minute rush and have a great day out with Thomas, Toby, James, Percy, Mavis and Gordon. There’s loads of fun to be had for the family, with a kiosk, picnic grounds, model trains and a Thomas Shop. Bring the kids before it’s too late! They are open every Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 4pm. The last train ride will be at 4pm on Sunday 26th October, 2014. So, there’s just over three months left to have a lovely Family Day at the Train Shed or your Thomas Birthday Party in the Double Decker Carriage or your get together/party in the picnic grounds. For all the details, see www.thetrainshed.com.au. See what fun Sydney Weekender said when they visited The Train Shed! http://youtube/IeG5XQbC6gQ. The Way We Walk Walking is great exercise. It’s cheap. You don’t need any special equipment. You can do it almost all your life (except at the very beginning and very end). It is weight bearing, cardiovascular exercise, and you can do it without wrecking your knees. Weight Watchers tells me you use just as much energy if you walk five kms as if you run it. You sweat and pant less, and think and talk more. Give me walking any day! It’s also very necessary. We don’t yet have hoverboards, and you can’t drive your car through the shopping mall. It is a terrible thing if people can’t walk. As a society, we are getting better at providing wheel chair access. But for almost all of us, walking is a way of life. That’s why the bible uses the metaphor of ‘walking’ for ‘lifestyle’. Your ‘walk’ in the bible is the way you live your life. It is the way a person conducts themselves. Monty Python even had a skit called ‘The Ministry of Funny Walks’. There are all sorts of funny walks out there, and I don’t just mean unusual gaits. That is, there are all kinds of ways of life that veer off, that go astray. There is another related bible metaphor for sin called ‘wandering’. So God says of his wayward people: ‘They have loved to wander thus, they have not restrained their feet.’ (Jeremiah 14:10 ESV). There is a better way to walk. Each one of us is invited to walk in the footsteps of Abraham, who trusted God (Romans 4:12). Abraham lived a life of trusting God. He lived by faith, not by sight (2 Corinthians 5:7). So God declared him righteous. He is now with God, though his body was laid in
the ground to undergo corruption. And one day, when Jesus returns, Abraham will rise again to eternal resurrection life. And so can we, and receive the same blessings Abraham did (Romans 4:22-25). Jesus is risen from the dead. It was prophesied in the Old Testament hundreds of years previous (Isaiah 53:10-12; Psalms 16; 22). The future world has broken into this world of death. And so a new way of walking is available for us all (Romans 6:4). We need not give ourselves over to despair, hopelessness, hedonism, and a life of desperate final flood of dissipation to dull the pain. God has raised the dead. So our great problem of death has been solved. God promises each of us the Holy Spirit, if we would simply ask God for Him and trust in Christ (Luke 11:13; 1 Corinthians 12:3; Galatians 3:1-5). The Holy Spirit will come and make his home in us and change our thinking (John 15-17; 1 Corinthians 2). He will also change our walk (Romans 8:4). We can keep in step with the Spirit, and walk according to him (Galatians 5:16-25). The walk appropriate for life in light of the resurrection is love for those for whom Christ died (Romans 14:15). So Paul says, ‘let us walk properly in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarrelling an jealousy (Romans 13:13). I hope you see the many benefits of walking with God. You will never walk alone. Matt Olliffe Minister, Anglican Parish Mulgoa

New Graffiti Laws Tough on Vandals
ď ˛ Ross Fowler, Tanya Davies, Adrian Saville and Gavin Chalker Local MP Tanya Davies, State Member for Mulgoa accompanied by Penrith City Council Mayor Ross Fowler last month announced jointly that new laws recently passed in NSW Parliament will make it easier for police to combat emerging graffiti threats such as acid etching and pave the way for more graffiti offenders to clean up vandalism in the community. “The Graffiti Control Amendment Act creates an aggravated marking offence, which will capture acid etching and other graffiti that can’t be readily removed by wiping or using water or detergent,â€? said Tanya Davies. The offence carries a 12 month jail sentence and fine of $2,200. The Act also clarifies that courts can include a community clean up order as part of a graffiti offender’s sentence even if hasn’t been specifically sought by the prosecutor or offender. “Removing graffiti is a tedious, time consuming and costly task and clean up orders will ensure vandals get first-hand experience of the harm and inconvenience they have caused to our community,â€? said Ross Fowler
Tanya Davies said the Act helped to unify NSW graffiti laws, making it easier for police to deal with offenders. “Local police officers no longer have to search several different pieces of legislation when deciding what charge to lay against a graffiti offender as all the relevant laws are now contained in the one Act, Tanya Davies said. The new graffiti laws would target criminal behaviour and would not prevent children and communities from chalking hopscotch squares and rainbows onto footpaths. “The Graffiti Control Amendment Act specifies that graffiti laws do not apply to the marking of any public footpath or pavement with chalk, said Tanya Davies. Tanya Davies and Mayor Fowler encouraged the local community to join the fight against graffiti. “The cost to the community of cleaning up graffiti, while falling from around $900,000 in 2007, is still a very high $600,000 last financial year. That could get 8 new playgrounds, or upgrade 8 sportsfield surfaces. That’s almost 4 new toilet blocks similar to those in Tench Reserve on the Nepean River, or provides floodlighting for 6 sports fields. That’s every year we could do these things said Mayor Fowler. “Tough laws alone will not be enough to win this battle – we also need the community to play its part by reporting graffiti to the Graffiti Hotline (free call 1800 707 125) and by lending a hand on Graffiti Removal Day2014 to be held in October, said Tanya Davies. Graffiti Removal Day 2013 saw an 83 per cent increase in volunteers, with almost 1100 community members taking part in the clean up. Their work resulted in 23,140 square metres of graffiti being removed, saving taxpayers and businesses and estimated $1.5 million in clean-up costs. The NSW Government will again be teaming up with Rotary Downunder to run Graffiti Removal Day 2014, which will be held on Sunday, 26 October.

FAITH – WARRAGAMBA BAPTIST CHURCH Lyndon Rumsey P: 4774 1476 W: www.warragambabaptist.net Sunday Service: 9.30 am
Pastors Corner Last year I saw a picture and accompanying story on youtube that made me stop and wonder at the majesty of God’s creation. The picture was of a 21 week old unborn baby named Samuel, being operated on by a surgeon Joseph Bruner, from Nashville, USA. Baby Samuel whilst in his mother’s womb had been diagnosed with Spina Bifida and without surgery Samuel would not have survived. Dr Bruner has had success in performing remarkable surgical operations on unborn children afflicted with this condition. During part of the procedure Baby Samuel’s tiny but fully developed hand, reached out through the incision and grasped the surgeon’s hand. Dr Bruner is quoted as saying ‘that when his finger was grasped, it was the most emotional moment of his life, and that for an instant during the procedure he was just frozen, totally immobile.’ It was as if Samuel was thanking Dr Bruner for saving his life. Samuel was born in perfect health and the operation was 100% successful. Praise God! Samuel’s story is so remarkable, Dr Bruner’s life- saving skill is exceptional. But above all that we worship the God of all creation; the God who created the heavens and the earth; who placed the stars in the sky; who separated the oceans from the land; and created Man and Woman in His likeness. Psalm 139 says, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well.” My prayer is that we will always remember that we serve and worship an amazing God; and that we will go out into all the world and spread the Good News that Jesus Christ is Lord. God bless Lyndon Rumsey Ph: 0417174455
Stolen Property Police are appealing for information after excavators and equipment were stolen from Minto last month. Between 11pm (Saturday 14 June 2014) and 3am (Sunday 15 June 2014), property was stolen from an earthmoving business on Pembury Place. Items taken during the incident included a red five-tonne and a blue 1.5-tonne excavator, a white Isuzu tipper truck, a trailer and heavy machinery tools and equipment. About 3am (Sunday 15 June 2014), emergency services were called to an address in Wallacia, where they located a white Isuzu tipper truck, which had been burnt. Officers attached to Macquarie Fields Local Area Command attended and commenced investigations. They are urging any witnesses to the incident, or anyone with information on the whereabouts of the stolen property to contact them via Crime Stoppers. Police are urging anyone with information about this incident to call Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000 or use the Crime Stoppers online reporting page: https://www1. police.nsw.gov.au/. Information you provide will be treated in the strictest of confidence. We remind people they should not report crime information via the Police Facebook and Twitter pages.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) NepeanStudent-Wellbeing Worker – Mulgoa Public School Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services Ph: 0409 986 121 Centre: 4721 8520 Blog: http://handsheartsminds.wordpress.com
If you have been reading this column for a while, you will have gathered by now that I love Descriptive Praise as a parenting strategy. That is, not saying “good boy/girl” or “good job/work” when your child has done something well, but to actually describe what you like about what he or she did and why. And if you have been using descriptive praise you know how effective it can be. BUT… If you are also using the words “naughty” and “bad” when describing your child’s mistaken behaviour, you may find that the descriptive praise doesn’t work so well. Why? Because words are powerful. If you use “naughty” and “bad” your child will internalise those words, and he or she will prove just how naughty and bad he or she can be! I have consulted with some parents over the past few months who have come to me asking why their kids are spiralling into increasingly negative behaviour to the point where they are uncontrollable, even though the parents have been using descriptive praise. In each of these cases the parents have been using “naughty” and “bad” a lot. I have said this so many times talking to parents over the past few months it bears repeating here… REMOVE “NAUGHTY” AND “BAD” FROM YOUR VOCABULARY WHEN DESCRIBING YOUR CHILD”S BEHAVIOUR!!!! And get rid of that damned “naughty” chair or corner. Call it a “chill out” or “calm down” or “quiet time” place. When you use these very powerful and nasty words on your child and you use them often, you are digging a pit of shame for him so deep that it may take a lifetime for him to crawl out of it. Shame during childhood can lead to mental health problems during adolescence and adulthood. Think about it – if someone close to you calls you ugly or stupid often enough you start to believe it. In fact, if you are sharing your home with an adult who says these things to you it is domestic violence (emotional abuse). So, when is it ever OK to use these words with the little people whom we are supposed to be guiding, educating, caring for, nurturing, growing up, loving? Never. The next question from parents is “what do I say instead?” Tell a child ‘what to do’ rather than ‘what not to do’. Always keep it positive. For example, “stand still while I fix your collar” and then follow-up with descriptive praise “thank you for staying still, it was so helpful, and it gets it done quickly”. Paying attention to the positive encourages more positive behaviour from your child. And if your child has had some kind of mistaken behaviour, instead of focussing on who she is (for example, clumsy, careless), focus on what she did (for example, broke the window) and with her assistance work out what she can do next time (for example, kick the ball towards the fence). To find out more about positive parenting I highly recommend that you do Triple P (Positive Parenting Program). It’s fabulous!

Small Business Finance Do you have a small business and need finance? Now is a great time to review your finance, with some lenders actively lending money to the small business sector - and this environment won’t last forever. Small businesses have a range of unique finance needs, including: • Vehicle and equipment finance - To purchase the tools that a business needs to get the job done. This can range from machinery to office equipment. • Lines of credit/revolving loans to help smooth out cash flow. Most small businesses understand the difficulty of managing the mismatch between when they receive their income and when their expenses are due. A line of credit may help here. • Factoring – This is where a business brings forward payment of an unpaid receivable invoice by “sellingâ€? the invoice to a third party, who take a fee for their service. This can be for a single invoice through to whole account receivable ledgers. • Commercial property finance – To purchase premises for a business to operate from. • Capital for the purchase of an existing business, or to fund the start up of a new business (including franchise finance). When it comes to small business no two businesses are the same, and it’s important to find a lender who understands your business and who you can build a strong relationship with over time. We can advise you regarding the suitability of business finance and help find you the right lender for the job.

Problem Gambling May Run in Families In a new study, University of Iowa (UI) investigators found that pathological (problem) gambling runs in families, with first-degree relatives of problem gamblers eight times more likely to develop this problem in their lifetime than relatives of people without pathological gambling. Problem gambling — gambling that is serious enough to disrupt someone’s life, work, and relationships is a major public health problem that affects between 0.5 and 1.5 per cent of adults at some point during their lives. Studies clearly shows that problem gambling runs in families at a rate higher than for many other behavioural and psychiatric disorders.
Family members and health care providers should be alerted to the fact that if they see someone they love with problem gambling habits, that person is highly likely to have a close relative with similar or the same problem. They should probably encourage the person to let their relatives know that help is available. The Gambling Help Line Number is 1800 858 858. For the full article go to: www.psychcentral.com
