Rotary Recognises Locals The Mulgoa Valley/Wallacia Rotary club recently recognised four local residents as Paul Harris Fellows for their contribution to the community. All the recipients were unaware that they were getting the award and had been invited along to the meeting for various reasons so it was a fun evening of surprises. Jean Wilmington from Luddenham was recognised for her time and effort for charity work for the Cancer Council, including raffles, morning teas, and selling the roses and plants her husband Artie grows. It started with $4000 raised in 2009 with over $25,000 this year! Jean and her team of helpers also organise the monthly markets in Luddenham to raise money for the upkeep of the Uniting church buildings. Margaret Stepniewski from Mulgoa was recognised for her community work setting up the Mulgoa Valley & Warradale Gazette and other community newspapers and her 10 years with Warragamba Girl Guides as well her involvement with other local community groups. Dr Adrian Sheen from Mulgoa was recognised for his work as a GP, including his work the Nepean Medical Association, the AMA, and the Nepean Division of General Practice. He is also a great fundraiser for various charities and organises the annual Mulgoa Idol and other musical events where he plays trombone with the Mulgoa Road Jazz Band.
SPOTLIGHT ON...
Local Rotary member, Jan Bradley from Luddenham, was recognised for her effort, commitment and service to the club since 2002. She has held positions on the board every year and has been President twice. She has been a driving force in the club since its inception and has made a very large contribution to the reputation of the club for community work way above its size. She is always supportive and the first to jump in and help.

Little Girls Make Grand Achievement The Edith Parsons School Of Physical Culture only pick 12 girls in each age group to ‘physi’ their little hearts out at their State Grand Final, and Silverdale, you have two of them!! Local girls Emma Grant & Callay Kennedy competed in the 5 Year Old section at the Sydney Town Hall on Sunday November 25th and while I’m sure the little ones were daunted by the BIG town hall, you would never know. Emma comes from a long history of ‘physi’ families with her Mum, Aunty and Grandmother all doing Physical Culture for most of their lives. And for Callay to make it so far having never heard of physical culture 12 months ago is unheard of. ‘Physi’ is one of the most affordable dance sports. It combines the elements of Ballet, Marching, Pilates and Dance into one fun filled sport. Classes are held at The Holy Family Primary School, Luddenham on Friday nights. For any enquiries please call Nicole – 0417 001 974 or Mandy 0417 020 549. Congratulations girls, what an accomplishment!!

Free Health Clinic for Women Health experts have made it easier for local women to take time out of their busy schedules to look after their health and wellbeing. The Silverdale Neighbourhood Centre in Warragamba is running a monthly, free and confidential Well Women’s Clinic. The Clinic provides pap tests, breast checks, pregnancy tests, postnatal checks, sexual health tests and information on women’s health topics including contraception, healthy living, menopause and emotional health. South Western Sydney Local Health District (SWS LHD) Women’s Health Nurse, Lorena Schot said the Clinic provided women with a friendly, relaxed and safe environment to seek assistance. “At the Clinic we provide a longer consultation, which gives women time to discuss their health concerns,” Ms Schot said. “Many women also prefer their health screening be undertaken by a female worker, and as a women’s health nurse, I’m able to provide this service,” she said. The Clinic runs on the last Wednesday of the month. To make an appointment call 4774 1273. The Clinic works closely with local GPs and other services that women can be referred to if they require more specialised care.

A small Gift makes a
BIG Difference!
At Glenmore Park Town Centre, they believe Christmas should be for everyone! The annual Christmas Appeal held in association with the Mulgoa-Wallacia Rotary is their way of bringing a little bit of joy to those families less fortunate during this festive season. The official Christmas Appeal Launch was held at the centre in November, where they enjoyed a celebration cake, visit from Santa and special performances by the Nepean Christian School Big band and Glenmore Park Public School Junior Choir. Sadly thousands of Aussie families will go without receiving a gift or celebrating a family meal this holiday season simply because they can’t afford it. The annual tradition of collecting gifts and food for the Christmas Appeal has been occurring at Glenmore Park Town Centre for over 5 years and wouldn’t be possible without the
generous support of our local community. With your help they aim to collect as many gifts as possible on behalf of The Salvation Army and the Penrith Domestic Violence Services so that they may be delivered to disadvantaged children and families in the local area. They will be collecting donations of new clothes, books, toys and non-perishable food items (including canned foods, jars, etc.) The centre is also raising money on behalf of the Ronald McDonald House Family room to be located in the Neo Natal unit of the Nepean Hospital, which is anticipated to open in the New Year! Your Christmas will mean more this year when you give! Glenmore Park Town Centre is located at 1 Town Terrace for any further information about the Christmas Appeal please contact centre Management on 4733 3699

Rocking Holiday Activities Following the success of their last program, Kalinda Jade Studios is once again running their KJ Rock school holiday workshops. Held at the South Penrith Neighbourhood Centre on Wednesday 16th and Wednesday 23rd January 2013, the workshops offer school students—and their parents—an exciting and expressive alternative to hanging around at home or attending vacation care. Primary school aged students (ages five to 11) will participate in music, dance, drama and art workshops. Older students (ages 12 and up) join the school holiday KJ Rock program in which they’ll form bands and learn how to play music as a group. According to owner and teacher, Kalinda McDonald, the workshops held last holidays were a huge success. “We had over 40 students of various ages at our first workshop and the kids had lots of fun, learnt some new skills and built their confidence. “In our older age group, we’re looking for students who want to be in a band. Whether they are drummers, singers, guitarists, bass or keyboard players, the school holiday program is a great place to meet new friends and jam with musicians at a similar level. “After the last holiday workshops many of our students joined our monthly KJ Rock program, and some of those band members will even get some gigs throughout the year!” Parents will find the camp to be an affordable and enjoyable alternative to vacation care, with discounts available for families registering more than one child. Places are limited so early registration is encouraged. To find out more contact Kalinda Jade Studios on 0403 134 336, email info@kalindajadestudios.com.au or find Kalinda Jade Studios on Facebook. Kalinda Jade Studios also offers regular tuition in drums, singing, piano, guitar and bass and music theory to students of all ages and abilities, with high school music tuition a specialty. www.mulgoagazette.com.au

Seven Strategies to Survive Christmas with the Relatives* Each year we look forward with great expectation for the perfect family Christmas. However we know from ‘Christmas’s past’ that often the reality of our Christmas holiday experiences is far removed from our picture perfect fantasies. Christmas can be pretty stressful and unpleasant for many who may not look forward to spending a lot of time with people that they don’t particularly like but feel obligated to be with during this time of year. Here are seven strategies for survival. So, consider doing the right thing for yourself by using the following: 1. Don’t take the bait! Some relatives may use the holidays to act out family dynamics, old sibling rivalries, and so forth. Don’t take the bait. If you know it is coming you can plan for it. 2. Watch the alcohol consumption! It can be easy to drink too much during these gatherings and then you are more likely to have troubles with family dynamics and impulse control. 3. Put brakes on your impulses by counting to 10 (slowly and in another language if you need to). When you are confronted with a family member who irritates you get ready to count before you say anything. 4. Take an adult time out. Take a walk around the block and breathe deeply to look after yourself and keep your stress levels down. 5. Learn to observe. Try to develop what we psychologists call an “observing ego.” Try to take yourself out of the situation you are in and observe it similar to if you were watching a movie. It may give you a bit of distance to do so and not get so emotionally involved.
6. Keep the big picture in mind. The big picture for some is that you have to survive a few hours or days with the family during the holidays and then you can get back to your normal life. The big picture is to survive without too much family drama. Keep the expectations reasonable and doable. 7. Be grateful. No matter how stressful family can be, it really is important to be grateful for what we do have. *Adapted from Prof Plante @ www.psychology today.com. * Linda Cassell - Assoc MAPS, Master of Counselling, Psychology Honours (BASS) - is a psychologist and counsellor in private practice in Luddenham.

PARENTS CORNER Article by: Narelle Smith (Family Worker) Nepean Community & Neighbourhood Services. Ph: 0409 986 121 Email: Narelle@nepeancommunity.org.au Blog: http://oranaplaygroup.wordpress.com
Finished your Christmas shopping? Haven’t started? Got a few bits and pieces? A Dad said to me recently that he was getting so stressed about Christmas. He’s a single Dad raising three boys and he can’t afford much. I asked him what his stress was achieving and he said that he wasn’t getting much joy from life. I asked what his kids really needed, and he replied “a Dad that’s not stressed and that is there for them”. That’s right, those kids need a parent that is present to their needs every day, not a parent that has a sack load of presents on Christmas Day. At my place, we give “sharing” presents at Christmas. We give some thought to gifts that the whole family will enjoy doing together – a board game, some sporting equipment, toys that the boys have to play together. I know some families that give tickets or gift cards for family outings (museum, movies, aquarium, outdoor adventure, etc). Years ago, I knew a Mum who thought that buying expensive “educational” toys would make her children do better academically. What she didn’t know is that children don’t need stuff, they need you, their parent. Research has shown that children learn more in social interaction with caring, interested, and more knowledgeable others. The more that parents talk with (not talk at) their children the better they do socially, emotionally, and academically. So your child will learn more from sitting down with you with a world atlas poster that cost you $1, and exploring and chatting about what you both see and know, than she will from the electronic world globe toy that cost you 120 bucks.
When my kids were little I bought them a plastic fold-up house. It had furniture and people and a doorbell. I thought it was great. The kids didn’t touch it. Not once. One day they asked if we could make a house from a Weet-Bix box. We spent a few hours making the house with doors and windows to my kid’s exact specifications. And we made people and dogs from wooden pegs and pipe cleaners. And they played with that house until it disintegrated. Lesson learnt. Those plastic toys will cause more mess and stress, and will sooner or later end up in landfill, but the gift of your time and energy with your children will last a lifetime. I’ve seen this little poem doing the rounds. It is such a simple, lovely thing… “Something they want Something they need Something to wear, and Something to read.” The “something they need” could be a bit tricky. They might think they need that iPod Touch. All I can offer is to ask yourself if the “gift” is going to create connection or disconnection? So many parents I speak to regret purchasing the electronic thing that has caused their child to become more isolated and withdrawn and then had the battle over having to place limits on it. People have asked me how I have avoided the demand from my pre-teens for Wii’s, Xbox, iPod, iPad, etc, and I say I simply say “no” and offer to take them to the park to play a game of cricket. Wishing you much joy and connection this holiday season.

Mulgoa Public School Update from the desk of Principal: Mr Rob Francis
As Christmas draws nearer, I stop to reflect on what has been an extremely busy but productive year. Firstly, I have been privileged to take over the helm as Principal at Mulgoa Public School where there is fantastic community support, extremely dedicated teachers and students who want to learn. Our school was the proud recipient of a Director-General’s 2012 Excellence in Education Award for Excellence in Student Achievement through Teacher Professional Learning. This is an award that every single person in the school should be proud of! We celebrated the many achievements of our students at our special ‘Visitor’s Assembly’ and welcomed back previous Principal, Mrs Jenny Thompson to present some awards. Thirty-two stage 3 students represented our school at a Small Schools Basketball Gala Day at Cambridge Park with the Senior Girls’ team making the Grand Final. Stage 3 students also had the opportunity to travel to the ABC studios to attend the statewide Multicultural Perspectives Public Speaking Finals. What a valuable experience it was! I have been welcoming parents of new Kindergarten students for 2013 by presenting Kindergarten transition information sessions covering school readiness, the Kindergarten program and general information about our school. We shortly commence our Learn to Swim Scheme, which will hopefully develop water confidence and provides students with basic skills in water safety and survival. While the year is still not yet over, and there is much to do, I would like to wish all your readers a very Merry Christmas and a bright and prosperous New Year.

Holy Family School Update from the desk of Principal: Mr Tim Vane-Tempest
Science Day at Holy Family School was held on 16th November. On this day the students and teachers engage in a range of hands on science experiments and activities. This years theme was Good Vibrations with a focus on Sound. As well as teacher based experiments we also had a guest scientist visit from Fizzics Education. The day was a great a success and we look forward to next years event. Recently 20 Stage 3 children participated in the Parramatta Diocesan Basketball Gala Day. Despite being a long day, the children put in a mammoth effort into all of their games with some pleasing outcomes. In one of the boys' games, Ethan Harris scored a free throw after the buzzer to win the match, which was exciting to watch. Danielle Mackay described the day as: "a fun day playing the game I love with friends". I was proud of the students' performances on the day but even prouder of their behaviour, cooperation and sense of fair play. Holy Family was well represented. Congratulations to Ethan Harris who recently represented NSW at the national Touch tournament in Queensland. Ethan is the first student from Holy Family School to represent at this event. For the record NSW combined schools finished runners up to Queensland. 2012 has been an exciting, busy and successful year at Holy Family School. As we head through the Church’s season of Advent towards the great celebration of Jesus’ birth at Christmas, on behalf of the Holy Family School community I wish all readers and their families a blessed, peaceful and joyous Christmas time, spent in company of those you love.
Top Left & Bottom: Fun times at the Science Day Top Right: Ethan Harris proud medal moment!
